JSP Ltd has been given a Gold Award from the Supply Chain Sustainability School. Sustainability is of massive importance to the construction industry, yet the major contractors can’t achieve it all by themselves. It is through the supply chain that they deliver their projects – and the sustainable solutions they promote to their customers. The Supply Chain Sustainability School is a virtual learning environment that aims to help construction suppliers and sub-contractors develop their sustainability knowledge and competence. The concept of the School was initially developed by Skanska and was launched in partnership with Willmott Dixon, Kier, Sir Robert McAlpine, Lend Lease, Morgan Sindall and

JSP has managed to achieve this Gold Award through significant investment. Solar PV installation in 2014 generates enough solar power to ensure on average one in three JSP Safety Helmets are made by the sun. On a really sunny day, 100% of its Safety Helmets are manufactured using renewable energy. In addition to this, JSP adopts a nowaste policy on site and is continually improving the methodologies they used during manufacture to ensure a safer, more sustainable future by making products 100% recyclable, concentrating on Product Lifecycle Management and educating its workforce. JSP Ltd is proud to be part of the Sustainability School. The company joins the Construction Industry with its continued commitment to lead the industry into a brighter, more sustainable future.

Building Excellence

Making the most of mineral resources

Building and Construction Review is delighted to present its highly prestigious Building Excellence profile to Francis Flower. Renowned for their services in milling, grinding, blending and storage of fine mineral powders, Francis Flower recover, reclaim and recycle mineral by-products from industry for the benefit of customers and the environment. They provide an exceptional range of products and services to customers primarily in the construction and agriculture industries but increasingly in the paints, plastics and pharmaceutical sectors. Francis Flowers’ unrivalled expertise along with over 50 years’ experience in the industry has led to the company becoming a leading provider of specialised mineral materials and services for a range of industrial sectors. The prestigious company is the owner of the UK market leading brand- Gypsol. Manufactured in the UK, Gypsol acts

as an exceptional alternative to sand/ cement screeds and polished concrete. At the forefront of liquid screed development and innovation, the Gypsol brand has grown significantly since its creation three years ago and has gained the majority of the market. It is made mainly from a recycled material and makes for the perfect supplement to underfloor heating. When compared to the more outdated and traditional flooring systems, Gypsol has proven to be more advantageous in a multitude of ways. Not only is it significantly cheaper, less problematic and more environmentally friendly (as it is constructed predominantly from a recycled material), it is also incredibly easy to apply. “The Gypsol product is a highly useful, innovative creation,” commented Paul Pepper, Managing Director of Francis Flower. “Since introducing the product three years ago we have received a fantastic amount of interest and sales

have soared. We provide the basis for our customers to produce a high quality floor screed and we create the demand in the market for them to sell into.” Architects, designers, main contractors, self-builders and flooring contractors utilise this specialist ingredient in order to effectively enhance their industrial projects. The incorporation of Gypsol over underfloor heating systems lessens costs and increases sustainability, and tests have confirmed that those using anhydrite screeds can improve the co-efficient performance of an underfloor heating system by up to 25% by reducing reaction times and reducing the required flow temperature. A notable product in the Francis Flower portfolio is the Solida System, which is designed to provide a whole house heating solution by combining existing technologies and the Gypsol based flowing anhydrite floor screeds. The process involves incorporating Gypsol screed in separating floors in order to maximise desirability, asset value and useable space. “This system enables the screed to go on the first floor on timber floors, ensuring homeowners encapsulate underfloor heating effectively,” Paul explained. “As a sustainable alternative to radiators, the Solida System improves

a house builder’s green credentials massively as it reduces energy use. We now have a number of customers using the Solida System, including the renowned timber frame manufacturers Oakworth Homes.” “We provide the highest quality products and systems to help your company create the best products possible,” Paul concluded. “Our aim is to continue to develop more innovative products and work on our systems to further improve thermal conductivity. We also have other exciting products and systems we are working on that due to be launched in the near future.” Contact T +44 (0)1928 574574 ff@francisflower.co.uk www.francisflower.co.uk www.gypsol.co.uk

Product Innovation Award

Restoring the Past for the Future Building and Construction Review is pleased to present Heritage Cob and Lime with its well-regarded Product Innovation profile. Traditional builders’ merchants Heritage Cob and Lime is an award-winning company specialising in the manufacture of an exclusive range of premium quality lime putty products. The family-run business, which was set up twelve years ago, was founded by Dave and Sue Rawle who have now handed over the daily running of the business to their daughter Sarah, who manages the warehouse whilst son Frank heads up the building restoration. The building product supplier provides its own lime putty, lime mortars, lime plasters and lime washes to both the building trade and private customers working throughout the UK. Pointing mix, natural hydraulic lime, laths, cob blocks, Helifix bars, Helifix drivers, trowels, water based eggshell paints, waxes, water based lacquer and casein paints are also available for purchase. The company, which is based in East-theWater, North Devon – whilst occupying outlets in Buckinghamshire and Lincolnshire – doesn’t just focus on the provision of first-rate lime-based products. It is also a traditional builder in restoration, so its service offering is relatively broad, as Sarah detailed, “Heritage Cob and Lime has two main roles. One is to manufacture and sell high quality lime mortars and specialist lime plasters (along with all other traditional building materials).” Frank added, “We run a busy build restoration, which includes working on listed properties from small country cottages to large stately mansions. We also offer a consultation service to people buying an older property and we run dedicated lime workshops, which are always held on a Saturday. Overall we pride ourselves on manufacturing a quality product and giving a personal, friendly service that is second-tonone, which we believe to be essential.” Heritage Cob and Lime’s traditional lime mortars and plasters are made using an old family recipe that has proven effective across the years. This is in line with the company ethic ‘lime mortars – just as they should be,’ which emphasises the importance of staying true to

custom, using tried and tested materials to efficaciously ‘restore the past for the future.’ This is a popular philosophy that has been repeatedly acknowledged by customers across the board, namely private clients, builders, builders merchants, architects, DIY enthusiasts and in essence, anyone who has an interest in or owns an older property.

When asked about recent changes and plans for the future, Sarah and Frank were confident of continued success, “Our business has been steadily growing ever since its establishment,” they concluded. “This development refers in particular to the build and restoration side, which employs a team of skilled tradesmen. This is significant because part of the service we offer is giving advice to our customers as we want them to enjoy using the product and understand the properties and benefits of lime mortar. Going forward we are looking forward to maintaining a steady level of growth and expansion.” If you wish to enquire then please feel free to reach out to the specialist lime mortars, lime putties, plasters and lime wash manufacturers and suppliers

Product Innovation Award

Keeping workwear working By Sibtain Naqvi, UK Product Marketing Manager for Workwear, Berendsen Appropriate workwear plays an important, but often underappreciated, role in your organisation: Instilling a sense of teamwork and pride and keeping employees clean, comfortable and ready to perform at their best. Some types of workwear have another even more important function, however. Protective clothing describes any garment that has been engineered to enhance the safety of the wearer, for example by making them more visible to colleagues or shielding the body against heat, cold, chemicals splashes or electrical hazards. Employers have a legal obligation under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 to protect employees against hazards in the workplace. They also need to ensure that the protective clothing and other personal protective equipment supplied to staff meets the specific regulations and standards associated with the tasks they will be asked to perform.

Selecting protective clothing that meets the necessary standards – and ensuring the garments chosen fit well and conform to corporate identity requirements – is often difficult enough, but it is once protective garments go to work that the real challenge begins. Research suggests that more than half of all industrial workers in the UK are expected to clean and maintain their workwear and protective garments at home. That creates inconvenience for employees and, paradoxically, increases costs for companies. Many common forms of workplace contamination – like oils, greases and hydraulic fluids – are hard to remove using domestic laundry equipment, resulting in shorter garment lifespans and the frequent need to replace lost or damaged items. Most critically, however, this practice presents real safety risks.

Sibtain Naqvi, UK Product Marketing Manager for Workwear, Berendsen

Protective clothing requires careful treatment to ensure that its properties are not compromised by inappropriate cleaning. Washing or drying clothing at the wrong temperatures or with unsuitable detergents can reduce the effectiveness of fire-retardant, chemical resistant or electrostatic treatments, and degrade the performance of high visibility fabrics and panels. And mixing dirty workwear with other items can lead to cross contamination and potential of harm to workers and their families. Maintaining the wearability and safety properties of professional clothing requires professional washing and drying procedures, conducted industrially and in accordance with standards such as ISO 15797. Companies can do this in-house, but few organizations have the scale to justify the investment in appropriate equipment, personnel, and expertise. A more effective solution is to outsource the management of workwear and protective clothing to a specialist service provider. Unlike basic workwear suppliers, full service providers like Berendsen are

Francis Flower sponsors this issue of BCR UK: see them on page 3

equipped to provide comprehensive support throughout the whole workwear lifecycle. They can provide assistance in selecting and specifying the right clothing for every role, task and working environment. They can manage the delivery of the right quantity of clothing in the right sizes, delivered or dispensed in the most appropriate manner. And when it comes to critical clothing care, they have the scale and expertise to manage laundering, repairs and maintenance and replacement as required. They can also ensure that garments are periodically tested to ensure they still perform to the required standards. Ultimately, outsourcing a fully managed workwear and maintenance service enables companies to free up time, space and capital and allows them to focus on their core business for improved performance and profitability. you need immediate control, Hausmate has developed a unique solution: the Haze. The Haze looks and acts like a normal dimmer switch. Using a coloured bezel, it also provides control of other services such as audio and blinds – music volume, track choice and opening and closing of blinds, all from one lightswitch. As a result of Hausmate’s holistic approach to control, relevant feedback from the building is provided as and when required. The Hazes can flash red when the door is left open, or you can receive a phone call to tell you the fire alarm has been activated. This is all possible due to the full integration of all services that Hausmate provides. A design led approach using BIM technology slashes installation costs. Hausmate requires no bespoke programming, uses standard cabling and can be installed by any electrician. Lack of data led control is an issue for many heating, solar and lighting system manufacturers and installers. This is what Hausmate excels at providing. The Hausmate reseller programme equips third party installers with comprehensive pricing tools, marketing and sales support and installation guidance.

With a number of different bath sizes at our various plants (including one of the widest galvanizing baths in Europe at our Telford plant), Joseph Ash galvanizes everything from lighting columns to staircases, fencing products to bridges, structural sections to access support steelwork, and industrial flooring to motorway guardrails. Small specialist parts such as hinges, nuts and bolts can also be galvanized in our spin line galvanizing baths.

Team at Joseph Ash Galvanizing under normal conditions will last for many years without maintenance of any sort. Spin galvanizing: Small items such as nuts, bolts, chains and screws need to be as rust resistant as the steel structures they support, however they are too small to galvanize in a hot dip galvanizing bath. With spin galvanizing small items can be placed in a perforated basket and immersed into molten zinc. Once the zinc/alloy layers form, the basket is centrifuged at high speed so that the spinning action removes the excess zinc and creates a clean profile. Powder coating: Powder coating is a type of paint that is mainly applied to metals to provide a harder finish than a normal paint. The paint is applied as a powder electrostatically from a spray gun and is cured in an oven under a high heat to form a tough, durable skin. Powder coating paints come in many colours and can be used to create different finishes such as textured or metallic. Shot blasting: Before metal is galvanized it needs

Applying a hot dip galvanizing process to steelwork provides fabrications with a robust, durable and corrosion protective finish that

Shot blasting fires a high pressure spray of abrasive steel materials onto a rough surface to create the smooth surface. We enjoyed talking to attendees about the benefits of shot blasting and galvanizing steel (which include durability, stability and corrosion protection), and about the stunning range of finishes that can be achieved with a variety of powder coating finishes. We met lots of interesting companies and hope to do business with them in the future. WIEHAG to build another spectacular roof in the UK, The Macallan WIEHAG are poised to construct yet another spectacular roof construction in the UK – a stunning glulam timber roof for The Macallan, which will be the largest and most complex timber roof ever built in Scotland. The Austrian based engineered timber specialist, WIEHAG has announced plans to build the eye catching roof structure for the prestigious Macallan Distillery in Scotland. Construction of the roof commenced in April, and the green roof structure will take the form of five juxtaposed domes spanning a total length of over 200 metres. A leader in the design, manufacture & installation of industrial and commercial structures, both locally and abroad, WIEHAG has a proven track record in the construction

of high profile engineered timber structures, and The Macallan project makes an eye catching addition to their portfolio. Following the successful completion of the timber roof structure over Crossrail Place at London’s Canary Wharf, WIEHAG will expand its impressive reference list of international projects with the construction of an innovative eco-friendly roof structure over the new distillery and visitor experience for The Macallan in the Highlands of Scotland. The sustainable roof is stretched over five domes, mounted on an engineered timber roof sub-structure and consisting of five domes with a projecting canopy. This project see’s for the first time in the UK Wiehags innovative roof decks being used in conjunction with our glulam beams, and we see this product being used more and more as clients see the benefits of WIEHAG’s precision made components.

Less Work ... More profit!

“The complex geometry certainly leads to logistics and design challenges, but with our parametric design, CNC machinery and advanced barcode based production system we fully manage the process from start to finish ensuring we meet program timescales as well as our exacting standards of quality & service” says Johannes Rebhahn, Managing Director of the new Wiehag UK Ltd. He also adds, “That the new Wiehag office in Goswell Road, London is the logical result of the numerous projects we have successfully completed in the UK and clearly demonstrates our commitment & ambition to the UK market.” This is further highlighted by Wiehag’s dedication to sustainability in the UK, as in addition to holding PEFC certification for several years, Wiehag is now also fully certified with the FSC chain of custody scheme. Construction details for trade magazines: The building dimensions are 63m x 207m which makes it the largest and most complex timber roof ever constructed in Scotland. Under the hills there is a raised octagon shaped CHS steel structure supporting the glulam structure, with steel and concrete supporting the roof at its perimeter. Whilst its green Sedum roof mirrors

the local topography & helps it blend in sympathetically with the surrounding landscape, the structure must fulfill the Architects intention that it’s read as a manmade construction rather than naturally occurring. This is carried through the design to the extent that its geometry mustn’t have perfect curved surfaces, but is formed instead with a facetted 3x3m waffle grid structure, and Wiehags Engineers have risen to the challenge by coming up with some exceptionally neat details which push the boundaries of what’s possible with innovative materials like glulam. Glulam beams are normally straight or curved as this is the logical shape when bending the single lamellas, so for this project Wiehag produced curved beams which have then been machined to form the unusual facetted kinked shape. The 200mm wide glulam beams have a 160mm wide glulam core with 2x20mm structural LVL (laminated veneer lumber) cheeks either side. The LVL cheeks form a channel at each bottom face of the beams, and the bottom face of the glulam core is beveled to mirror the organic hilly geometry, as well as forming an exceptional neat detail when four beams meet at a junction. Wiehag’s prefab roof deck is built up with a LVL ceiling, timber joists and OSB panel on top, which serves as the base for the 12,300m2 of green roof build up. Limited access due to some of the already installed process equipment has resulted in Wiehag inventing temporary propping towers made of very slim block glued glulam in lieu of traditional bulky scaffold towers. These innovative towers are designed to take ca 30 tonnes of vertical loadings, and further demonstrate Wiehags ability to think outside the box (or in this case, inside the hill!). “Another challenge in the beautiful but windy Speyside region is installing 1,800 glulam beams and 2,700 prefab roof deck elements over a 26 week period, meaning that with two cranes working simultaneously throughout the period, we have only 30 minutes per lift,” explains Wiehag’s John Spittle. Get CORDURA fabrics working for you ®

It takes a strong, hardworking fabric to survive a tough, hard day’s work. That’s why many leading workwear manufacturers use CORDURA® fabrics in their trousers, jackets, tool belts, knee reinforcement patches and safety boots. We’re not talking hard day in the ‘I had so many meetings today’ kind of way. We’re talking real work. The kind that requires bending, lifting and twisting – and clothes that are durable and functional enough to keep up. The fact that our fabrics are comfortable and stylish, well, that’s just a big workplace bonus.

Seeking sustainability Staff at Westbury are passionate that the use of tropical hardwood is no longer necessary and have set themselves a goal to be completely tropical hardwood free by the end of 2016 – a tough objective for a big player in the timber window industry. According to Director, John Mumford, “Timber industry technologies have advanced to a point where there is very little need to use unsustainable wood sourced from places like Africa and South America. However the association people make between hardwood and durability, and softwood and poor quality still exists. We are committed not only to eradicating tropical hardwoods from our manufacturing processes but replacing it with sustainable timber that is as good or even better performing in terms of durability and longevity. This is something we have been working on for a long time. We are at a stage now where only a very small percentage of our business incorporates the use of hardwood and we are making every effort to be completely tropical hardwood-free by the end of the year.” Westbury are a conscious company, introducing various efficiencies over their many years in business to eliminate

wastage and reduce their carbon footprint. Their material of choice is Accoya® – an engineered wood that is created from only FSC® or PEFC™ certified tree species. Despite being a softwood, it’s a Class 1 timber meaning it is just about as durable as wood can be. It lasts 50 years above ground and 25 years in soil, is indigestible to insects and virtually rot-proof. Swelling and shrinkage is also dramatically reduced which means it’s easier for Westbury to machine and process, and for end users to maintain. Founder and Director Jonathan Hey says, “We are immensely proud of our progress so far and are excited to soon be tropical hardwood-free. We encourage all of our customers and specifiers to consider these credentials when they’re considering new windows, doors, or an entire garden room.” T +44 (0)1245 326510 info@westburyjoinery.com www.westburyjoinery.com

Industrial Minerals & Chemical Products News

Is your project in the Bag? Modern methods of construction are increasingly complex in ever decreasing space. There is more demand for specialised materials – including floor finishes. Many floor coverings today are becoming thinner and lighter. As a result, many require a much higher standard of surface regularity of the substrate below – up to SR1. Quality of finish has to be married with speed of construction, particularly where any delay can result in very high costs.

sHealth s & Safety: Generation of dust and waste is a real concern for modern clean, clear sites.

This is clearly demonstrated when concrete slabs are used within multi storey construction, the slabs then have to be made level enough to receive a finished floor covering. After suitable preparation the slab is ready to receive a levelling compound. Currently most high performance, thin levelling compounds are delivered to site in bags. The Challenges faced by sites: sCosts: s high performance bagged products are expensive and usually delivered in pallets (40 x 25kg bags). They also require space and time to be transported to site, to unload and to store, and then have to be moved to where they are applied. As an example, it would indicatively take 400x 25kg bags to cover an area of 500m2 at 12mm. This number of bags requires 10 pallets

sLogistics: s storage, palletised materials require a lot of room on sites where space is a premium sTime s Management: there are health and safety implications to be considered, and additional

management time to be spent on risk assessment and method statements sHandling: s bags are extremely time consuming to install and involve manual handling

The Solution Excelio – a new and innovative product developed by Anhydritec addresses all of the concerns above. sInnovation: s Excelio is the first UK pumpable flowing substrate leveller, mixed off site, in a regulated and approved ready mix plant, which achieves SR1 surface regularity sCosts: s the ready mix solution offers huge material cost savings as a sub base leveller that can be applied as thinly as 12mm sLogistics: s Excelio is the first readymix truck delivered solution to then be pump applied sTime s Management: (example) pumping from a ready mix truck, 500m2 can be delivered in less than 1 hour, compared with several days for bagged products sHandling: s There is no manual handling required sHealth s & Safety: no dust and no waste generated. In a nutshell, Excelio is cost-effective, simple, clean and quick. Excelio eliminates the hundreds of bags that would usually be required in a large scale construction project. It also cuts down on the number of delivery vehicles required on site – one 8m3 truck mixer carrying 7m3 can cover over 500m2 @ 12mm. This is equivalent to 400 bags of levelling compound, and 10 pallets. Excelio also eliminates the need for remedial grinding and application of costly smoothing compounds. Structural Building News

SPOTLIGHT:

Refurbishment & Conversion Schemes Building conversions as we know are often difficult to complete, frequently with costs spiralling as unknown defects surface. Good and correct investigation can reduce the unknown, however we often see work proposed with minimal investigation or inappropriate investigations employed, based on a standard approach. Refurbishments and conversions can come with their problems which may result in claims being made. This can include issues of damp, mould growth, water ingress and failing roof coverings, with many issues of damp problems, mould growth, water ingress and failing roof coverings. CIRIA 111 (Structural Renovation of Traditional Buildings) provides guidance on the level of investigation as well as typical construction methods used and issues frequently encountered, it is applicable to most low rise buildings of the 18th, 19th and 20th Centuries. However even with these fairly well understood buildings, issues occur, we often see remedial DPCs injected of inappropriate type for the wall construction, and increasingly at the wrong height (eg above structural floor joists) inadequate investigation of embedded timbers or a reluctance to re-cover a roof that although may initially appear to be in good order has in reality never performed to modern requirements and importantly modern expectation. Unfortunately, Planning conditions and Conservation control can reduce the appropriateness of a building for conversion to residential use, it is not the case that we don’t agree with these controls, its more that unfortunately new home purchasers have expectations that their new home will perform in the same way as a newly built property and often this isn’t the case, from single glazed windows causing condensation to appear during colder months, to ongoing maintenance requirements and increased sensitivity to a changing climate, the pitfalls can be huge. Fact is that most properties built in the last 150 years are robust, unfortunately unsympathetic use, poor maintenance and simple issues such as increasing ground levels can introduce the enemy of most

buildings – moisture, by far and away the greatest defect we see in buildings proposed for conversion is water ingress through failed roofing and gutters/downpipes (usually as a result of poor maintenance) and moisture rising, not through a failed DPC but usually a bridged perfectly good DPC with resultant rot to timbers both visible and invisible behind wall coverings and other finishes. More recent buildings aren’t devoid of these issues, more that they contain less timber, and were built to more modern standards, however these present other problems such as concrete defects, cladding issues, and in some cases structural issues. There is a lot of guidance out there to assist in the process of conversion, however the aforementioned CIRIA document is an excellent start, but reference to British Standards and even some historic association documents can provide an excellent source of further guidance, and don’t forget we can help you too! Involve us early and we can recommend the type and level of investigation, so that when you start hopefully there won’t be so many unknowns, and where practical we will agree the retention of elements or make clear where replacement is the only realistic approach.

A green secret worth discovering… A relative secret to the UK market AURO has been manufacturing paints and finishes using natural raw materials for over 30 years.

For any home-owner looking for a traditionally styled wood burning or multi-fuel stove still packed with the latest technology and innovation, the Nestor Martin range is ideal, says Simon Holden, Chairman of Euroheat, the UK’s leading wood burning stove provider.

Consistent use of natural materials ensures that they are a truly eco option and by avoiding synthetic chemicals they are also far healthier, with many products suitable for vegans as well as those seeking to avoid chemicals in their lifestyle. AURO offer breathable finishes, which are very durable, including washable grade emulsions and of a high quality, with all colours mixed by hand, using only natural pigments, at their premises in Gloucestershire. The product range provides a high quality, natural alternative to almost all decorative finishes including hard wearing floor oils and waxes, vibrant woodstains, oils for enhancing brick and stone as well as specialist plasters. AURO products have been tested against the most stringent emission tests resulting in paints evaluated as ‘Highly recommended for living areas,’ whilst washable wall emulsions make maintenance easier and are very popular in commercial applications,

Here is what the ‘National Association of Plaster Lecturers’ have to say about the fantastic new addition to our range.

In the early days plaster was mixed in a bucket using a stick, the task was laborious and the plaster was often lumpy. Later a bike wheel was attached to the stick this was a great improvement and removed most of the lumps but often left a compacted layer of plaster at the bottom of the bucket which often spoiled the mix. In the 1980’s, the electric whisk started appearing on building sites, this gave the plasterers the edge and produced a smoother plaster more quickly. But the

What the very clever team at OX Mix M8 have done is take a look at the tradition metal whisk and designed a tool that have overcome all the problems associated with the whisk, which are you do not always get a consistent mix with pockets of powder still in the finished mix, damaging the whisk when it has been not cleaned after making a mix, i.e. hitting it with an hammer. The blade comes in two sizes the 10mm and the 14mm for the bigger drills. Check out: www.oxtools.co.uk for more information.

Setting the standards

Introducing the new innovative OX MIXM8 mixing paddle, another fantastic revolution in the market of mixing.

Over time, the way plasterers have mixed their materials has progressed sometimes at a snail’s pace, but progression has been made, from using a stick to stir the mix onto attaching a bike gear wheel or small pram wheel, through to the metal plasterers wheel then in the eighties the electric drill and whisk, now the plastering trade stands on the dawn of development with the OX Mix M8 Blade.

For our customers, this has meant security in the knowledge that we provide the right solutions at the right time – no matter what the request. The expertise of our personnel in powder coating spans over 30 years. ✔✔ Widest stock range in the UK ✔✔ Over 100 years colour matching experience ✔✔ UK wide technical sales force ✔✔ Next day delivery for stock items.
