The Flexible Coating Company The organisation – which prides itself on being a wellpositioned powder coatings manufacturer and supplier – was originally founded in 1984 by Tom McElhannan and has since developed a countrywide reputation for its excellency in this niche. Now managed by Tom’s son and daughter, John and Gill, the business has remained a family-run enterprise boasting over thirty years of refined experience in the formulation of thermosetting powders for electrostatic application. All associated requests can be catered to accordingly courtesy of the team’s vast skillset and knowledge base within the industrial powder coating industry, as Thermaset’s Commercial Manager Nigel Crane informed us, “Our employees are empowered to answer all queries as quickly as possible and thus the personal touch that is bred inside the company is translated out to our customers. Over 45% of our staff has another member of their family working here and our current average length of service is over 15 years.

“With this in mind, we have great faith in our staff that all of our products are manufactured to the highest possible standards and our ethos of ‘right first time, every time’ is carried out. We have never lost sight of the fact that we are a family owned firm (the third generation of the family is also employed by Thermaset) and very much think of our employees as such.” The Staffordshire-based company working with the ISO 14001 accreditation, boasts an impressive status as the largest sole UK based manufacturer of its kind with the most extensive product inventory. The stock range comprises many variations and the all-encompassing offering even includes anti-bacterial, post forming and specialist powders (which can be developed where necessary). There are thousands of formulations available, so there’s no colour that can’t be successfully matched, and orders can be taken in numerous quantities (from as little as a few kilograms right up to bulk deliveries dispatched in tonnes for a long-term contract).

It is this flexibility that makes Thermaset stand out amidst its competitors in the marketplace, as Nigel continued: “The depth of our stock range and level of customer service we offer is what places us in a strong position in the industry. This ensures we have a varied pool of clients; the beauty of our customer base is that we have the ability to serve everyone from one man outfits to the multinational companies. Such is the professionalism and expertise of our staff; we can cater for everybody’s needs. “Being able to deliver such a wide variety of stock for next day delivery also separates us from our competitors, as does our ‘Pre 12 for a Pre 12’ delivery service which enables clients to have a morning delivery on their powder on all orders received before noon the previous day. We like to think that this service helps our customers to become more efficient without incurring any extra expense.” Because operations are undergone with the strictest testing processes, clients can rest assured that the products they receive are of the highest possible quality. Keeping close control over all proceedings ensures consistency and complete customer confidence, and this is made possible as the R&D and production facilities are strategically positioned on the same site as Thermaset’s general office. These first class corrosion resistant powder coatings essentially eliminate the utilisation of solvents, which in turn enables users to complete the process efficiently without being hindered by frustrating runs and sags. In addition to this, they can be recovered for re-use, need no pre-mixing and can be easily controlled with minimal wastage. Available in Epoxy Polyester, Epoxy Powder, Polyester and numerous other specialties, the powders are suitable for the following applications: household appliances, automotive, furniture and electronics. Upon detailing Thermaset’s current performance and plans for the future, Nigel was soon to enlighten us about the company’s most recent developments and agendas, “We have recently attained ‘Qualicoat’ approval, which allows us to supply architectural grade powder coating to the industry,” he said. “Having recently purchased land adjacent to our current factory, we are also completely redeveloping our office and laboratory workspaces creating a bigger and better working environment as well as instigating a ‘training school’ where prospective clients can learn about the industry and how best to use our product. The hard-working and friendly group of representatives at Thermaset are readily available to provide guidance and information as well-equipped specialists competent in handling tasks of all sizes and complexities. Formulation and manufacture of unique powder coatings are available within just five working days, and standard products can be delivered the very next day, so if you are interested in enquiring then please don’t hesitate to give the team a call.

Hauraton’s RECYFIX® HICAP® provides reliable surface drainage for 10 years at Doncaster’s Community Sports Complex It is 10 years since the introduction into the United Kingdom of Hauraton’s RECYFIX® HICAP® High Capacity slot drainage system. The system was first installed in 2006 at Doncaster’s Lakeside Community Sports Complex car park. Officially opened on the 17th December 2006, the Complex was imaginatively planned and built to the highest architectural standards, the development integrating sport and community facilities in a spectacular parkland setting. Over the years well over 100,000 RECYFIX® HICAP® one metre channel units have been installed in numerous UK projects including supermarket car parks, access areas and major sports venues, distribution depots, airports, public and commercial precincts, industrial, military and container port installations. The RECYFIX® HICAP® system was the result of an extensive research and development programme run by the Hauraton design engineers during 2005/6. The design work resulted in an innovative surface water drainage system that had a unique ductile iron top tested up to Class F900 loading capability. Using ductile iron prevented distortion of the slots during installation. This feature was not available on other high capacity slot drain systems in the UK at the time. Coupled with the range of sizes available and the light weight of units, the system provided many benefits to the specifier, contractor and client alike.

Tim Connolly, Managing Director is delighted with the success of the product in the UK, “Field experience has shown our RECYFIX® HICAP® system allows for less underground excavations, materials and vastly condensed installation times. As there are fewer runs required, the surfaces strength is not compromised whilst maintenance and cleaning are also reduced. What’s more, all but the largest size weighs less than 25kg so reducing the need for mechanical handling. Unlike similar ‘heavy duty’ drainage systems on the UK market that use galvanised steel slots, the slotted components on our HICAP® channels are made from strong ductile iron, so accidental distortion of the slots during installation has proved not to be a problem.” Tim concludes, “After 10 years of use the HICAP® channel runs at Doncaster have provided trouble free drainage with no failures reported in any of the components installed.” RECYFIX® HICAP® was developed to facilitate rainwater run-off from large hard landscaped, tarmac and concrete surfaces. The tough injection moulded channels, originally made from a recycled Polyethylene-Polypropylene composite (PE-PP), but now made from recycled Polypropylene (PP).The company offer six HICAP® sizes with volumes ranging from 18.4 to 415.0 litres per metre. The different sizes are designed

to easily link up with each other in a step-fall design, so as the volume of water increases downstream the chance of overflow is virtually eliminated. Think Roofing, Think NFRC NFRC, the UK’s largest roofing trade association, put on a spectacular show at the recent UK Construction Week which took place at the NEC, Birmingham. Partnering with the organisers, NFRC attended the Build Show where they hosted a dedicated roofing pavilion. Creating a strong roofing products and service sector at the show, the NFRC pavilion featured some of the biggest names in the industry including Kingspan Insulated Panels, Fixfast, Quinn Building Products, IKO Polymeric, Ampteam Limited, Topseal Systems Ltd, Bilco UK Ltdand A Proctor Group Ltd. The new partnership allowed NFRC supplier members to benefit from a unique shared branded presence and access to an active audience of buyers and specifiers during the show. The well-established association dates back to 1982, when a team of slate merchants and slaters congregated in

York to attend a meeting organised by James Townsley, a slater from Hull. The purpose of the gathering was to devise a national association. Now, after 120 years of success, NFRC has established itself as the voice of the roofing industry,

constantly adapting to change and innovation to ensure its members are at the forefront of all roofing developments. They represent over 70% of the James Talman, roofing industry CompetentRoofer CEO by value. Through a strict code of practice and independent vetting procedure – which includes site inspections and adhering to the Government-endorsed TrustMark standards – the organisation ensures every member offers the highest standards of workmanship and sound business practice. “NFRC’s primary aim is to promote quality contractors and quality products,” explained James Talman, NFRC Chief Executive. “Our philosophy is to promote trade members, assisting them in gaining more work and through this achievement, help supplier members to sell more products and collectively to achieve quality installation. “Through using the services of an NFRC member, clients get free access to expertise from NFRC Technical Managers including receiving health and safety advice. All member contractors are rigorously vetted in their chosen roofing disciplines before joining and every three years thereafter.

As well as satisfactory training records, inspections of past contracts are made to verify quality craft skills and technical competence.” NFRC cover all of the key roofing disciplines such as single ply, sheeting and cladding, heritage and solar. They provide technical advice for members and their customers, and frequently run committee meetings and dedicated focus groups to discuss any upcoming developments which may affect the ever-increasing market.

“NFRC prides itself on leading the way in roofing for the benefit of the industry as a whole,” Ray continued. “One of the key areas of focus is in roof training. One such initiative has been the development of the Basic Competency Programme (BCP), created to gain formal recognition for manufacturer led training. The programme has been designed to make it as simple as possible for employers to upskill their workforce.” NFRC currently boasts a membership of over 1000 trade members and 180 supplier members (manufacturers, merchants and service providers). It provides support to its affiliate membership base, which is comprised of roof training groups, training centres and colleges that offer roof training. T +44 (0)20 7638 7663 www.nfrc.co.uk

Commitment to Excellence

Improving Your Design Process FenestraPro has proven to be a business most deserving of our Commitment to Excellence profile, we are delighted to announce here at Building and Construction Review. We are therefore incredibly keen to tell our readership more about this exciting brand whilst discussing its innovative offering and the subsequent advantages of using such solutions. The technology specialist FenestraPro focuses specifically on the provision of intelligent software tools that have been meticulously developed to assist architects and building developers in achieving the finest building façade design. The Irish company, which can be found in Dublin, is renowned for its suite of highly functional cloud-based systems, which have enabled the team to obtain significant levels of success and recognition ever since the organisation’s establishment in 2012. In simple terms FenestraPro is a high performance product that enhances the design process in a way that is more environmentally friendly, efficient and costeffective. Having worked in close accord with many leading practices and industry professionals, the authorised developer operates with Autodesk Revit for the purpose of international optimisation (relating fundamentally to functionality and usability development). This can be effectively achieved by means of a graphically sound and navigationally simple solution incorporating technical inputs for the enhancement of individual thermal, solar and daylighting requirements of particular façades. The software is also advantageous in the respect that it can offer a comprehensive understanding of design features that will affect not only the performance of a building but also its energy consumption and occupant comfort. Customers can therefore take full control over the important design decisions that will impact the structure of a property, leaving them free to obtain the aesthetic results they would expect whilst remaining confident that they will also experience significant time and cost reductions. As well as eliminating the

Bringing the Fun Back into Workwear with GlowBeanie Wearable and innovative fashion takes a whole new form with GlowBeanie; functional and colourful woolly hats that stand out with their specially adapted glow in the dark fibres. The unique garments have been suggested a great way for workers operating within the building and construction sector to remain visible whilst keeping comfortable and productive. Safety and well-being is of crucial importance to tradesmen conducting manual labour, but this doesn’t mean that uniforms should be restricted to dark, drab and depressing pieces lacking in colour and imagination. This is where GlowBeanie

FenestraPro has recently released the 3.0 version of its façade program; a premium package that was founded by specialist architects David Palmer and Simon Whelan. This innovation, which provides the design parameters just as its previous counterparts, enables users to make the most of real-time performance indicators demonstrating the impact of design decisions throughout.

With their incorporated luminous material, the effortlessly stylish and undeniably cosy glow in the dark beanies act as an excellent accessory to cover or go underneath hard hats (if the workplace permits) and are perfect for commuters cycling to work in the winter, adding vibrancy to protective headwear for individuality. Dubbed the fashion statement that really gets you seen, the hats can accommodate different style preferences as they are available in wool and cotton varieties in single and mixed colour combinations. The range comprises the original GlowBeanie, Moss and Cable hats (one coloured), the Stripe (employing up to 2 bands of colour) and the vibrant Cable Trim (a single coloured hat with a contrasting outline). The latest additions include the Special Editions in four colourways (red, navy, green or black), the newly released Neon and the Two Tone. Numerous sizes are stocked and varying hat lengths offer greater choice for customers with the Shorty, a smaller hat measuring approximately 16cm (instead of 19cm depth) and the Slouchy, which adds extra inches for a more laidback look.

necessity of redesign, FenestraPro employs a glazing specification tool that will aid energy and daylight performance and a site location and orientation feature for better monitoring ability. The software works to analyse and interpret data by means of Building Information Models. steps in as an original item of clothing that adds a sense of excitement and visual effect to the everyday ensemble.

GlowBeanie was established in 2014 by founder Jane Beachell, who conceptualised the idea whilst holidaying at a German campsite and stumbling across an intriguing bundle of reflective wool in a shop window. The fruitful business has since gone from strength to strength and now boasts a wide selection of beanies, headbands, wrist warmers, neck gaiters and scarves (wraparound or skinny) in a multitude of shades and patterns. “Every product is custom made to the customer’s requirements based on my unique designs and extensive colour range,” Jane told us. “Our USP, the glowing fabric we use, is essentially a special thread which bounces back light and makes the wearer more visible and, subsequently, safer. As a result, our target market is quite wide – in reality our products are suitable for anyone out in all weathers and environments. Our aim is to promote an efficient service and an excellent customer experience that will build repeat custom. We even provide team specials (sets of 10 identical glow beanies at a discounted price) which enable customers to save 10%.” T +44 (0)7818 684338 jane@glowbeanie.co.uk www.glowbeanie.co.uk

Comfort and Joy An interview with Cliff Lockyer, CEO of Redbacks Cushioning Ltd, manufacturers of Redbacks Kneepads kneeling causes foam to flatten or disintegrate. The technology is unique in that the patent is for the geometric structure and not the material; we are free to use any material that we deem appropriate to the product application. The secret to our own science therefore lies in the use of a special moulded leaf-spring suspended in an arch by a flexible honeycomb matrix. When pressure is applied directly above the spring it bends, dispersing pressure and distributing weight evenly. The matrix provides a holding mechanism for the spring to control its bend and stabilise the entire structure, allowing pressure to be distributed evenly time after time. Redbacks® was formed in 2011 in order to develop our cushioning invention. Having researched the protective clothing market, we confirmed our belief that existing knee pads did nothing to cushion, comfort or protect the user’s knees from long term damage; in the UK the NHS replaces over 104,000 knees per year. In the U.S. this figure exceeds 600,000. We knew that for our knee pads to be really effective they needed to be made of soft flexible material and not foam, as pressure from

Both the honeycomb matrix and the leaf-spring are made from the same thermoplastic injection moulded material, ensuring a high compression rate and 100% recovery to its original shape, which means no loss of function over time. This combination gives the unique controlled distribution and deceleration of pressure – in other words protecting the rest of the body from the impact forces whilst kneeling, with the same pressure-relief benefits applying to our, soon to be introduced, new footwear and seating products. The latest addition to the company’s range are Redbacks

Strapped Kneepads; these have elasticated, soft Neoprene straps with dust and particle resistant fastenings which allow them to be worn on bare skin without chafing, or over trousers, and ensure that they stay in the correct position when kneeling, walking or sitting. Experts in Textile Solutions

For more than 85 years, workwear from F. Engel™ has been selected by customers from all over Europe as the first choice for all-round protection and maximum comfort no matter what a work situation may demand.

construction and the commercial sector. Each item of clothing is designed to be a perfect, comfortable fit whilst giving maximum freedom of movement and reliability, and all are fully certified to EN ISO 20471:2013 standard.

Founded in 1927 by Carl J. Engel Senior and now 4th generation family-owned, the company has 850 employees based at its Headquarters in Norgesvej, Denmark and 2 factories in Lithuania. Since it first began, with the importing of denim from the U.S. as a hard wearing fabric, the company’s aims have always been the same – to provide superior quality, value for money workwear designed for a perfect, flexible fit and to give long lasting, reliable service.

As an example, one of the main brand names under the F. Engel banner is ‘Combat’; geared to cope with any season and designed for action, this durable and stylish, uni-coloured collection has contrasting and reflective piping for greater visibility on jackets and trousers, many of which are made from 100% cotton. Almost all the trousers feature such useful detail as ruler-pockets, hammer straps and mobile phone pockets, whilst the leglength can be extended an extra 4-6cm if required. Other names to look out for, each with their own unique benefits, include ‘Galaxy’ and ‘Work Zone’ and the ‘Light’ range for warmer weather.

The original fabric was called Bull Denim which was made from 100% cotton. Over the years the materials and manufacturing processes have been continually developed to incorporate many new practical and beneficial design details with the versatility of the fabric improved by adding the yarn combination of polyester and cotton. New colours have been introduced and many businesses are now recognized by the specific colour combination and design of their Engel corporate workwear where not only is it valued for its practical uses but also as a significant part of a company's professional statement. Development is an ongoing process as new smart colour combinations and materials are continuously created and tested, with a constant emphasis on product quality, innovation, flexibility and environmental awareness. The company has an impressive seven collections (along with a large range of accessories), all of which are ‘tailor-made’ for a wide range of industries including manufacturing, offshore, building &

8

There are two policies which the company considers to be of very special importance. One is that advice is freely offered to firms and organisations within every relevant industry on the most effective ways by which they can comfortably protect their personnel; the other is to be in constant touch with its customers and end-users to ensure that all products are designed and manufactured with the aim of allowing them to do their work as efficiently as possible. The company is continually researching and gaining new and helpful ideas, from the locker room, to closely examining and testing all practical aspects of wearing and using its garments to maximum effect. Designing and Manufacturing WorldClass Respiratory Protection within the field of peranatomy of the human body made it possible to create a contemporary protective mask based on an anatomic design using rubber. In this day and age, the company is pleased to offer an extensive range of solutions in the form of half/ full face masks, accessories, filters, fan units, face pieces, accessories, filters, compressed air filters, compressed air fed respiratory devices and escape hoods.

Sundström Safety was founded back in 1926 by a forward-thinking mining engineer who identified a gap in the market for respiratory protection products. The innovating Ivan Sundström Sr. recognised that breathing difficulty - experienced whilst working in mines contaminated by unhealthy air – was a major issue that needed to be addressed and set to developing an effective solution.

“We supply every kind of respiratory protection other than self-contained breathing apparatus,” explained Tony Smith, Sales Manager UK & Ireland of Sundström Safety Services Ltd. “Our work revolves around coming up with different ways to offer the best level of comfort we can. We look at making the best protection possible, considering important aspects appreciated by the end user such as wearability, robustness and quality – providing products that both the operator and employer would want to use.”

The result was the world’s first ergonomic face mask, designed to protect the eyes and lungs of those working within the mining industry. Ivan’s son Per substantiated the organisation’s worth by responding to the increased demand with the conceptualisation of further products. His expertise

The range is suitable for a whole cross-section of clients working within various sectors. Although predominantly used within asbestos applications and heavy industries, Sundström has proven a brand most popular with relevance in pretty much every environment (from pharmaceutical and steel to

engineering). The Swedish company, which employs a total of 100 team members, will be celebrating its 90th anniversary this year and is pleased to have remained true to the ongoing Sundström philosophy of quality modes of protection and consistent product development. “Having been employed at Arco (our major UK distributor) prior to Sundström, I have noticed a few changes since I began working here three years ago,” Tony concluded. “One major difference is that the company has become far more operationally efficient and streamlined, proactively developing innovative products that no one else offers. As well as my role in sales I spend my time training people on how to use the equipment whilst making sure they are kept fully informed about the legislative requirements involved and the implications of not using the apparatus. “Going forward we want to become better known in the UK by increasing our market share and offering the best level of comfort and protection we possibly can to the British industry. We want to reiterate that we are here to help people: there are so many health & safety legislations around but as specialists we have the knowledge that will assist workers greatly in terms of protection during laborious activity. As a very ethical company our main aim is to ensure that individuals can breathe easily and that there are no issues with their lungs.” Contact Tony Smith, Sales Manager UK & Ireland M +44 (0)7508 417925 www.srsafety.com

UK Construction Week Show Review 2016 Providing Polyurethane Solutions We had a great show at Energy 2016 as part of UK construction week and met many people like ourselves passionate about improving the energy efficiency of New and existing properties. In case you missed us, our range of injected and spray foam products can be used in; new build and retrofit projects and can be used for domestic, industrial or agricultural purposes. Duratherm is our BBA & LABC accredited closed cell spray foam insulation is perfect for insulating both pitched and flat roofs in both new build and retrofit projects. When installed Duratherm seals off all the gaps therefore eliminating air leakage making the insulation more effective and improving the energy rating. Similarly our product Technitherm also has BBA and LABC accreditation and also offers excellent thermal insulation leading to improved energy

efficiency. However, instead of being spray applied Technitherm is an injected foam solution, which when injected into the cavity though a predetermined drill pattern expands to produce a complete fill in the cavity. As Technitherm expands in the cavity in means it can be used to fill a number of different hard to treat cavities that other means of insulation can’t; such as random and narrow cavities. Like Duratherm, Technitherm has a closed cell structure this means when injected into a cavity it will prevent the ingress of water into the inner leaf and has been tested by the BRE to meet their requirements for flood resilience. UK Construction Week Show Review 2016

UB Services: The most relied upon utility specialists in the UK Recent volatility in the UK energy markets have once again highlighted the importance of good, informed advice across all industry sectors. We have been advising clients on energy procurement since shortly after deregulation in 1998. In that time our clients have benefited from our in-depth knowledge of the industry and our interpretation and forecasting of market trends. Our service is all encompassing and includes all matters pertaining to the supplies of gas, electricity and water. This includes the installation of meters, including landlord supplies, a comprehensive utility transition service on hand-over to avoid any additional unnecessary costs incurred through costly out of contract rates imposed

by suppliers, energy procurement, aggregated purchase and resale schemes and invoice verification. We work with developers, asset managers, facility managers, architects and construction companies and liaise directly with suppliers, DNO’s and MOP’s on new builds and refurbishment projects throughout the UK.

Most recently, on a new City Suites Development in Salford for Carillion. We are constantly looking to innovate and develop our approach to utility management and we were first in our field to offer true bespoke length supply contracts to facilitate multisite alignment. Our volume procurement negotiations with suppliers have allowed us to offer visitors and exhibitors a fantastic opportunity to secure a gas tariff under two pence per kilowatt hour until first quarter 2020. Branding to build on at The Build Show The Build Show is the largest of 9 shows at UK Construction Week 2016, bringing together over 650 exhibitors to an audience in excess of 24,000 visitors. Over an incredibly busy 3 days, Bigger Printing met thousands of visitors, all connected in a variety of ways to the construction industry. Many of these visitors took part in the game being run on Bigger Printing’s stand – hoping to win a voucher for a Red Letter Days experience of their choice. Visitors to the stand completed an illustration of a construction site which had some items missing by placing those items where they thought they belonged. As these items were printed onto a magnetic material, they could have gone anywhere.

From 18th – 20th October, The Bigger Printing Company attended The Build Show at the NEC Birmingham as an exhibitor, showcasing a range of construction industry print solutions, such as hoarding panels, mesh banners and bespoke safety signage.

Compound Security Specialists Effective site security is essential to prevent loss of equipment and materials from build sites and to minimize H & S liabilities, but traditional solutions such as man guarding are becoming economically less viable as minimum wage and living wage legislation continues to push up the cost to the client. CCTV has made an impact over the last decade, but still continues to be unreliable and a nuisance due to continual cable breaks caused by heavy plant. CCTV towers have gone some way to resolving this issue, however, such systems require clear site lines in order to be effective as well as regular engineer visits to maintain them which racks up the costs, often to over £400 per week per tower.

Use the winter ‘shut down’ to cement your HMRC compliance Many contractors are aware that their payroll arrangements for self-employed tradesmen may be questionable – especially if subject to the harsh light of a Revenue investigation. In the developing landscape of aggressive tax collection, and fines, this is perhaps unwise. Putting one’s house in order may deserve a higher priority? Safe Air During U.K Construction week we will be exhibiting our new SafeAir products. Held at the NEC in Birmingham, it is the perfect venue to showcase our unique and innovative products to the trade and public sectors for the first time. SafeAir specialises in air sterilisation & purification equipment, ensuring a clean and healthy air space for both commercial and domestic clients alike. With an ever increasing focus on our quality in the media, SafeAir couldn’t be more relevant in today’s market, supplying family homes, office spaces, schools, hospitals, waiting rooms and many more public & private places. It works by drawing air from the room into the SafeAir unit, through an electrostatic filter. It then passes through a purification chamber containing a specifically designed UV-C emitter which inactivates the germs. By continuously processing the air, SafeAir machines provide a better, cleaner environment and can make a significant contribution to the improved wellbeing of your family, customers or staff. Over a period of many decades, Ultra-Violet C technology has been scientifically proven to

be an effective method of inactivating airborne viruses, bacteria and fungus. This is done by altering their DNA so they cannot reproduce and cause infection. Common pathogens such as Salmonella, E-coli, Influenza and Tuberculosis have been shown to be inactivated to UV-C exposure at the correct dosage. An added advantage of the SafeAir systems are that the sterilised and filtered air will typically improve the environment for Asthma sufferers. For more information, please contact: www.tqenv.com

Minus7 – Solar thermal heating, cooling and electricity

The experts in speciality timber products, wood finishes and fixings

The Minus7 system harnesses solar energy to provide a complete energy solution for buildings providing heating, cooling and electricity. The system comprises a solar and endothermic thermal collector, PV, a brine to water heat pump and energy storage. These are all seamlessly integrated into a single system managed by advanced proprietary control technologies. The heart of the system is a high quality, fully structural, aluminium roof composed of patented solar thermal planks with embedded PV. The Minus7 system turns a roof into a complete energy generating asset. The heat is zero net carbon insofar as, over a year, the embedded PV generates more electricity than is needed to run the heat pump.

Quality products, expert advice and unrivalled service are exactly what you can expect when working with Silva Timber. Since its establishment in 2000, the company has grown substantially and become one of the UK’s leading importers of speciality timber products, sourced from the world’s most reputable sawmills.

The system has already been deployed in single dwellings and single multidwelling developments, and has

Their advanced product portfolio consists of the most comprehensive range of timber products in the UK including cladding, trim, decking, fencing, shingles, shakes, screens, fasteners, wood care and pre-finishing service. The story began back in the late 90’s when Managing Director Nick Taylor decided to spend his sandwich year at university in western Canada. Upon finishing his studies, Nick began a role managing a new store selling Canadian Cedar decking – a completely new concept in the UK at the time. The company struggled to import enough stock, so with his passion for the product and customer service, Nick seized an opportunity. In May 2000, after convincing his friend Simon who he’d met at university that this was a great opportunity, they set up a desk in Nick’s tiny London flat and The Deck Supply Co was born. Soon after in 2001, the company moved from the tiny flat into its first office and by 2003 expanded to Liverpool. By 2005 the product ranges had outgrown ‘The Deck Supply Co’ and Silva Timber was established along with the move to larger premises in Widnes which remains their HQ today.

Nick and Simon still continue to innovate within the company along with their strong and dedicated team, many of which have been there from the start. They continue to look at ways in which to source timber, even travelling to remote countries in order to offer timbers the UK has never seen before. Silva Timber strive to continue on their journey with the same innovative spirit, panache and commitment they started with to provide the most unique, highest quality and sustainably sourced timber from the most dedicated team in the UK. Pyroclassic Fires UK The Pyroclassic IV fire was designed by the New Zealand Government 40 years ago to tackle the problem of air pollution and it’s the same stove you see for sale today. How it does this is it has a primary and secondary burn chamber which burns even the secondary gases therefore hugely reducing the emissions and increasing its efficiency. This technology has enabled the product to obtain DEFRA exemption which means it can even be installed in smoke control zones across the UK. The Pyroclassic has NO grate, NO ash pan, which means NO mess. This in itself makes the Pyroclassic unique compared to many of its log burning competitors. This is down to the design of the cylindrical fire chamber (which will take double the conventional log length up to 50cm) by using blast furnace technology which pulverizes even the ash particles leaving you with little or no waste product which means no wasted energy. In the heart of the Pyroclassic is the burn chamber. This is a one piece cast

ceramic cylinder that has a very high thermal mass which slowly dissipates the heat over a long period of time creating a nice comfortable constant temperature in your room instead of it fluctuating up and down with the strength of the fire. The Pyroclassic is available in over 100 different RAL colours with easily interchangeable panels, so if you decide in 5 years time to change your decoration you can just change the panels to suit as the firebox has a 15 year warranty. The Pyroclassic is a 5kW dry stove and is also available as a boiler stove by installing the water heating element capable of up to 3.7kW to water which

The Pyroclassic has a 10mm thick steel top plate which is ideally suited for cooking on or boiling a kettle. We also sell the cooking accessory pack which comes with a dutch oven so you can roast or bake. The Pyroclassic is DEFRA exempt which means it’s that efficient it can even be installed in smoke control zones in the UK due to its low emissions. It is also a HETAS approved product. The Pyroclassic is the only DEFRA exempt stove in the UK market to be capable of 12 hour + burn cycles on one load of material so you can stoke the fire before going to bed and be sure it will still be lit and keeping your house warm in the morning when you get up. Zilmet app takes the pressure out of vessel calculations Internationally-renowned expansion vessel manufacturer Zilmet has created a free mobile phone app that allows plumbers and installers to quickly calculate the required size of vessel for their installation. The app, which is free to download and available for both iPhone and Android, takes the boiler output and system volume and calculates a suitable vessel capacity and pre-charge pressure. Stuart Gizzi, director at Zilmet UK, said, “Our printed vessel calculators have been hugely popular amongst plumbers and installers, becoming an essential for every toolbox, van and classroom. “We have given out thousands of calculators over the last six years and through our continued commitment to provide easy-touse products to our customers, we have chosen to transform our existing calculator into a free app. “By moving onto peoples’ phones, the calculator is easily accessible. Inta goes HIPER for heat interface units Inta has introduced its ‘HIPER’ high performance heat interface unit (HIU), designed to deliver heating and hot water in multi-dwelling developments. Installed in shared residential buildings, the HIU distributes heating and domestic hot water from a central plant system to individual properties. By removing the need for each area to have a conventional boiler, gas flue and hot water cylinder, the interface units dramatically reduce build costs for developers. HIPER HIU boasts a factory-set, non-electric temperature control valve which prevents risk of scalding in the event of a power supply failure, as well as features the most advanced dual-speed PID control (patent pending) of any unit, intelligently controlling the heat into the plate heat exchangers. Designed with serviceability in mind, its two heat exchange plates have been built to the front of the HIU, meaning they can easily be removed and replaced in seconds. A large strainer mesh at the primary connections

prevents blockages and ensures the HIU continues working efficiently even if the unit has been neglected of cleaning. With Inta’s HIPER HIU, landlords can integrate renewable energy sources into the system, shrinking the size of a building’s carbon footprint and reducing energy costs for tenants. Three part harmony at dizzying heights The De Kroon skyscraper was built in the middle of The Hague replacing an old tower block. In three part harmony with the adjacent new buildings, for the Ministries of the Interior and Justice, the new skyscraper establishes its place on the Hague skyline. On lower floors, the new building maintains the scale of the historic city centre. The building has an overall height of approximately 131 metres and is divided into three distinct sections. The ground floor has 2,500 sq m of retail space, with 8,500 sq m of office space located above and then a final section with over 250 residential apartments. The top floor also features two luxurious penthouse apartments with breath-taking views. The Architects Rapp+Rapp, who designed the De Kroon building, have offices in both Amsterdam and Berlin.

Innovative material design The skyscraper used a pioneering new method for the party walls in the apartments – with numerous benefits. The partition panels, from Faay in Vianen, Netherlands/Mainz, Germany are only 54mm thick with a flax fibre core and plasterboard facings to both sides. The apartment party walls used these basic elements to create a solution to noise and fire requirements. Two parallel walls are set up using these elements and the area in between filled with 40mm thick mineral wool. The system produces very stable walls with excellent sound insulation. The drywall construction of the complete wall allows for quick installation within the property, which was only one of the advantages for the De Kroon construction project. Even though a drywall system was used on the project, the residents had all the benefits of a standard blockwork wall. Faay walls have stable dimensions thanks to their flax fibre core and have excellent screw retention over their entire surface. Fixings can be applied without plugs or battens and each fixing point can support up to 100kg. Integral Components When building the De Kroon skyscraper, the Faay wall elements gave a whole new ‘weight’ to the structural engineering. As a square metre of Faay party wall is much lighter than a square metre of standard masonry, the planners were therefore able to distribute the weight

reduction from the 5,500 sq m of apartment party walls over the 40 floors when designing the steel frame. All of which helped reduce construction costs. The pre-manufactured party walls were also easy to transport and precise logistics helped increase the construction speed on each floor. The innovative material design of flax fibre cored party walls is becoming a vital to efficient construction. Moreover, the flax fibre used in Faay partition walls also makes it both ecological and sustainable. Well designed and multifunctional The walls provide a well-designed and precise system for dividing interior areas and creating partitions while combining excellent technological qualities with simple and practical application. The walling panels regularly have plasterboard on both faces but are also available with a MDF or chipboard finish. Each wall element is stable and assembled into a solid wall using a tongue and groove system. A support rail is mounted on the floor and ceiling, where the wall elements are to be installed. An applied tongue in the groove of the vertical edge is used to connect it to the next wall panel. Contact T 0031 347376624 info@faay.com www.faay.com

Flexidisc Sanding System and Le Tonkinois Varnish The Flexidisc Sanding system has been sold in the UK by DA & BE Murkin for almost 30 years, but it still remains one of the most versatile sanders on the market. The Flexidisc is a system based on an exciting 5" (125mm) disc sander attachment which fits in your drill, and does not jump, skitter or scuff. This is due to a simple but highly efficient flexible shaft which eliminates vibration. It gives full control without the need for effort or expertise when presented full face to the job surface. This system accomplishes fantastic finishes on all hard materials including wood, metal, glass, fibreglass and car body filler. Fast rotation allows this quality process to be completed in a fraction of the time normally taken by conventional sanders. Although a generic sander in its basic form, the multi-purpose

Get CORDURA® fabrics working for you It takes a strong, hardworking fabric to survive a tough, hard day’s work. That’s why many leading workwear manufacturers use CORDURA® fabrics in their trousers, jackets, tool belts, knee reinforcement patches and safety boots. We’re not talking hard day in the ‘I had so many meetings today’ kind of way. We’re talking real work. The kind that requires bending, lifting and twisting – and clothes that are durable and functional enough to keep up. The fact that our fabrics are comfortable and stylish, well, that’s just a big workplace bonus. The Student Design Awards empower young designers to create their own visions of professional work clothing. This year’s challenge ‘Project 20/20’ required student designers to conceptualize corporatewear, workwear and/or personal protective equipment (PPE) for workers in the year 2020.

Students were encouraged to go a step further with a special CORDURA® Durable Design Award that focused on the integration of technical fabric functionality and commercial viability – a ‘work tough’ design element. Four UK students – James Parker, Bethany Martin, Mollie Crabtree, and Lauren Jones – were named as Project 20/20 winners and the work clothing that they designed was featured at the Safety & Health Expo in June this year. CORDURA® Durable Design Award Winner: Bethany Martin, 2nd year, Hons in Fashion, University of Northampton. Martin created a garment range for professional outdoor landscape gardeners. Underfloor heating and liquid floor screed

Increase your attic insulation performance by up to 50%

the underfloor experts

Easyflow are renowned experts in providing innovative and premium quality flooring solutions (in the form of underfloor heating and liquid floor screeds). The Easyflow liquid screed is an approved contractor and installer for Calcium Sulphate Anhydrite Screed, a revolutionary product which has enhanced efficiency and productivity in today’s construction market. This form of screed is much more advantageous than its traditional prototype, particularly when it is used in accordance with underfloor heating. As well as being quick and cost-effective, its reduced depth reduces heat storage, creating a floor that responds more rapidly to user requirements. To provide a comprehensive package, the Easyflow underfloor heating was developed. These first class systems are specially installed by seasoned professionals and are backed up by technical consultants, both of whom have a wealth of experience in the underfloor heating sector.

Downlight Covers have been developed to be fitted over downlights which are situated in ceilings, to loft/attic Downlights are a weak point in the fight against heat loss. This is due to several factors that include these weak areas were not insulated and the light fittings are not air-tight. Air-tightness test results can be dramatically improved when using Thermahood Downlight Covers over downlighters! A quality product, manufactured from superior grade self extinguishing. Easyflow’s commitment to providing a high quality customer service is demonstrated through its extensive support system, which oversees the entire process (from consultation to installation). A poor system will make a residence feel draughty or airless due to the moisture being retained and the inadequate air

Firstly, manufacturing housing in this manner offers significant time benefits. As the houses are manufactured on a flow line there is no risk of late delivery. Houses can be manufactured at a rate of twenty per week with no more than a four week on site construction time.

W

e have all seen the reports on the on-going housing crisis. The prediction is that at least 200,000 new homes will need to be built year on year until 2020 to avert this situation Despite some upturn in house building output last year; many analysts believe the industry remains at least 100,000 houses a year short to meet demand. 76% of house builders themselves have said that 180,000 or less is achievable with only 6% saying that 200,000 could be achieved on a regular annual basis. A number of house builders now state that skill shortage has overtaken planning and land availability as the biggest constraint on their businesses

These engineered and factory assembled products offer significant advantages in many areas.

To answer this gap in the market Premier Modular developed an innovative modular housing building system. This highly efficient light gauge steel frame, factory engineered product is constructed by skilled assembly teams in the company’s 22 acre site in Yorkshire. Business Development Director, Rachel Davis, points out that the houses are assembled not by traditionally skilled tradesmen but rather by manufacturing and engineering trained factory operatives. This opens up the possibility of significantly contributing to the housing shortage without the need for finding more

Modules are constructed to exacting quality levels in the controlled factory environment and with as much as 75% of the building being manufactured offsite, the risk of accidents on site is greatly reduced. Finally, as standard, the Premier housing product meets all 5 main elements to achieve a BRE Green Guide Rating of B or above and is designed to achieve a Code for Sustainable Housing Level 3 or above. The dwellings also meet the requirements of Life Time Homes. Premier housing was designed from the outset as an affordable home and this is how it has been received in the market. Costs are obviously design and site dependent, as this gives clients design flexibility but the project team will work with the client from day one to achieve value for money. Running costs are also kept to a minimum as standard insulation values are 28% higher than building regulations and exceptional airtightness ratings are achieved naturally with offsite construction. Many other eco features are also available.

Premier are working on several housing projects across the UK and have just completed a sustainability driven project for a Housing Trust in Yorkshire; The drive from the Trust was to create the first Code-5 Social Housing in Hull. The houses were 3 bed, 5 person units and were designed to attain Level 5 in the Code for Sustainable Homes (CFSH) through the introduction of design initiatives which included: nn Photovoltaic panels to generate electricity on site nn A communal rainwater harvesting tank nn Greywater recycled for flushing toilets nn Triple glazed windows & doors nn Compliance with HCA size standards nn Low energy light fittings installed throughout nn Restricted water usage per day, incorporating dual flush toilets and mixer taps/showers nn Use of low embodied energy materials and improved efficiency through prefabricated construction nn Compliance with Secure by Design. In a market where an increased rate of build is required, building standards are increasing, sustainability is of growing importance, a reduction of accidents and incidents is expected despite the increase in activity and we have a diminishing pool of skilled tradesman. Offsite construction has to be a big part of the solution.

To complete the package Premier ensure houses are fully mortgageable by offering an insurance backed warranty package through Checkmate comparable to NHBC, which is accepted by 98.5% of lenders.

WWW.POWERWALLGROUP.COM OR CALL: +44 (0)203 8240 600 IMPROVED installation of ISO-CHEMIE’s humidity variable window and façade sealing foils is provided following the introduction of new full surface self-adhesive variants, COMPLETE and COMPLETE DUO. The ISO-CONNECT VARIO SD humidity regulating foil provides rapid and effective year round high performance sealing of window and door frame connecting joints, while ISO-CONNECT VARIO XD offers improved UV resistance for curtain walling situations when sealing inner and outer window and façade connecting joints. The extension of the range of adhesive alternatives for ISO-CHEMIE’s window membrane and airtight foils means that the application of additional gun applied paste-type adhesive is not required during fenestration sealing work. The COMPLETE and COMPLETE DUO variants enable the sealing foils to be located in place and repositioned

if necessary after initial application before the full strength of the adhesive develops and takes effect. Furthermore, the risk of leaks from poor or patchy adhesive application can be avoided while the foil can be plastered over immediately after installation, providing further time saving benefits. The risk of soiling on windows, surrounding construction work and on the building itself due to residual adhesive is also significantly reduced. COMPLETE and COMPLETE DUO variants of ISO-CONNECT VARIO SD and XD also provide compliance with the specifications of the plastering guideline ‘Plastering window sealing foils,’ which recommends a minimum bonding surface area of more than 75%.
