operating modes all configurable from the colour LCD control panel. Finally, with continuous capacity control from 3% ~ 100% (dependant on module combinations), water outlet temperatures can be controlled to +/-0.5°C.
The Samurai RCME-WH Series consists of four basic modules: 140kW, 180kW, 220kW and 260kW. Combining these modules up to a maximum of 8, it is possible to achieve a chiller combination of up to 2,080kW. With the world-renowned Hitachi screw compressor optimised for R134A and part load performance, the units achieve seasonal efficiencies up to 6.80. Utilising true dual type plate heat exchangers, twin electronic expansion valves, and cyclonic oil separator means the units also have a very low refrigerant charge, up to 60% less than similar capacity chillers.
“With the forthcoming European ErP legislation plus the new European F-GAS Regulation, our new Samurai RCME-WH Series units are in the best position to meet these requirements, with their market leading seasonal efficiencies and low refrigerant charge,” commented Glyn Jones, European Product Manager.

As part of its continuing product research and development activities, Hitachi has launched an updated and expanded MultiZone product range, which includes both indoor and outdoor units. Three new capacity outdoor units have been added extending the number of outdoor models to eight, and capacity from 3.3kW to 10.6kW. The new 1.5kW indoor unit has been introduced to meet a changing market where smaller buildings and higher levels of insulation mean smaller indoor units can be specified, and is priced accordingly around 8% cheaper than the 1.8kW model. A big benefit for trade customers is the common indoor wall and floor unit designs used for both MonoZone and MultiZone installations, simplifying installer selection, stock control and improved aesthetics where single
The whole range has improved ESEER of up to 7.15 and SCOP of up to 4.33 (depending on the model), with cooling performances up by as much as 18% and heating performance by up to 11%. Heating capacities have also been improved by up to 22% at -7oC. In addition, sound levels have been reduced by as much as -5dB, while standby power consumption is down by an impressive 89% in some cases. The indoor units benefit from Hitachi’s Eco sensor which operates in two steps – at 20 minutes and 60 minutes without human activity being detected within range of the sensor – which adjusts heating or cooling temperatures to maximise energy savings, while a vertical and horizontal Auto Swing can be combined to circulate airflow evenly around the room to avoid hot or cold spots. Hitachi’s exclusive new ‘Leave Home’ remote control timer enables temperature of between 10oC and 16oC to be selected and programmed
to stop room temperatures dropping too low if areas will be unoccupied for an extended period of up to 99 days. For more information about Hitachi’s MultiZone product range with three-year manufacturer’s warranty, visit: www.hitachiaircon.com or contact Hitachi Direct Sales on: +44 (0)1628 585394.

As Specialists in providing ecological survey and advice with regard to development, land management, quarry restoration and local authority projects, SES’s ecologists have considerable experience liaising with Local Planning Authorities and Natural England to ensure smooth passage of your scheme. SES has worked with a number of clients to resolve frequent problems involving ecological issues. They provide protected species surveys, mitigation and licencing for Bats, Barn Owls, Water Voles, Otters, Badgers, White-clawed crayfish, Great Crested Newts and Reptiles. Their solutions range from habitat manipulation (development sites) to provide suitable areas for species away from working areas, location and design for bat housing, timetabling of building demolitions and when protected species licenses and surveys will be required prior to any works commencing. Armed with a team of dedicated, experienced staff, SES provides a complete service, offering advice and guidance to
Re-development timetables can be thrown out of the window if ecological issues are not dealt with prior to formulating work schedules. Even when planning permission has been granted, protected species must be considered at all stages of work in order to keep companies within the law.

Frequent issues include the presence of bats and nesting birds within buildings due for demolition or refurbishment. Without the required lead in time for an ecologist to advise on these issues, which includes timing of works to cause minimum disturbance, the project costs can dramatically increase due to site closures or retention of derelict buildings until the protected species issues have been sorted out. Genius Roof SolutionsTM – Revolutionising RoofsTM
TEC UK bring pioneering air to air heat exchangers to the UK market
Genius Roof Solutions are dedicated to ensuring works carried out on roofs do not compromise the integrity of the roof.
Thermal Energy Components (TEC UK Ltd), a division of Klingenburg GmbH, have launched a range of pioneering, German precision built Counterflow Plate Heat Exchangers that recover up to 90% (by rigorous calculations) of existing room heat or cold air.
We are a well-established business with a global customer base, providing a range of innovative and unique products. Having successfully developed and traded the HallclipTM (Lead flashing clip) to all lead merchants for many years. Jimmy, our Founder and Owner, had time to work on another problem that had bothered him all his working life (45 years roofing); the use of a lead strap (tingle) to repair a broken slate. You will often see a lead strap very high on the roofs of churches, cathedrals, heritage buildings and stately homes. What will become instantly clear to you
is the real cost of these repairs is the scaffolding or cherry picker to access the problem. If the repair isn’t permanent, it could be a recurring cost to constantly repair the same slate. Whilst demonstrating the Hallhook at Ecobuild, we were continually told about the problem of fitting a Solar PV array onto a slate roof and the subsequent issue of ensuring the integrity/ performance of the roof remained as it was prior to the installation. We quickly realised nobody had really given a thought to what was involved in maintaining the integrity of a roof and it was left to the installer to figure it out. The installers were often electricians with limited knowledge of roofing
(Slating is a very skilled trade) and to add to their woes a lot of the mounting equipment for the solar installation was not designed in the UK. Subsequently, we developed and launched the SolarFlash (sales to date in excess of 200,000 units), which when installed as per our installation guidelines leaves the roof with the same weather tight integrity that it had previously. The SolarFlash system allows your installation to fully comply with the MCS012 guidelines M +44 (0)7442 507658 info@geniusroofsolutions.com www.geniusroofsolutions.com
Deep Soil Mixing helps the construction industry reduce project times Deep Soil Mixing Ltd (DSML) is celebrating this month following the award of further projects in both England and Northern Ireland highlighting the breadth of projects the company is capable of undertaking. Since its inception in 2012, the company has won projects across the World from the UK to Nigeria. Recent projects have included a pipeline ground stabilisation project in Downpatrick, Northern Ireland, canal embankment stabilisation in Greater
Manchester and soil mixing at Poole for an extension to the Quay for the RNLI. While the method for improving the characteristics of non-organic soils by using soil mixing techniques to reduce settlement, increase the
stability of slopes and embankments is an established one, it is both more challenging and often more costly to increase the firmness of soft organic soils like peat, silt and clay – until now, that is. Using our technology, we are able to effectively reengineer any poor or contaminated ground, and all at a reduced expense, time, and using environmentally friendly solutions. Product Innovation Award
Discover the better way to build Building and Construction Review are pleased to commend Thermohouse for being presented with the highly prestigious Product Innovation Award. Thermohouse was specially selected for its ground-breaking, contemporary Low Energy Building System, which has proven to be a great success across both the UK and Ireland. This exciting innovation consists of an Insulating Concrete Formwork (ICF) wall system together with low energy floor and roof systems, providing an absolutely airtight, thermal envelope. The first key constituent is the Thermowall, an Insulated Concrete Formwork (ICF) wall structure produced from Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) with galvanized steel bridges that tie the inner and outer leaves together. This system provides building solutions on strip foundations or rafts from the basement to the roof level and is certified to six storeys, providing a remarkably strong shuttering kit
run through the full length of each panel in order to place them more easily as shuttering for intermediate concrete floors that do not require lifting equipment for the installation. A robust, reinforced concrete structure is provided courtesy of the linking of concrete and reinforcing steel between the Thermowall and Thermofloor systems. for the infill of concrete and reinforcing steel once installation has taken place. Thanks to its unique design, the Thermohouse wall form system can be applied to substantial unsupported opening spans, corner windows and cantilever extensions.

Seton welcomes new regulations to tackle fake PPE A recent Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) survey* confirmed that ensuring PPE is in good, serviceable condition is a top priority in health and safety organisations. The survey also identified key PPE problems, including substandard PPE equipment being used by some contractors. Due to the potentially fatal consequences of inferior products, the quality of PPE is high on the agenda. As a result, Seton fully supports plans for revisions to the current European PPE Directive to tackle the growing problem of ‘fake’ PPE. Seton conducted a study to gain a deeper understanding of PPE from a customer perspective. Ensuring PPE is in good, serviceable condition was ranked the second most important factor in PPE management due to the impact on employee safety. In addition, a key PPE problem identified by
39% of respondents is that contractors are not necessarily aiming for the same safety standards as the organisation. If contractors provide their own PPE and this is substandard, the consequences could be extremely serious for both the contractor and the employer. It is clear that using high quality CE approved PPE in the correct manner is a matter of life and death. Despite this, The British Safety Industry Federation (BSIF)** report that fake and illegal products being manufactured and sold within the PPE industry is an increasingly common problem. Many products manufactured using substandard materials have entered the market place, from gloves to high visibility vests. To tackle this growing problem, revisions to the current
European PPE Directive (89/686/EC) have been proposed. The new legislation would make retailers and distributors responsible for ensuring products they sell meet the required safety standards, rather than the responsibility falling solely on the manufacturer. It is hoped that this will help tackle the issue of inferior quality, counterfeit PPE in UK workplaces and protect the lives of employees. For high quality CE approved PPE, please visit: www.seton.co.uk/workwear-ppe *PPE Survey (2013) conducted by Seton UK with 106 respondents were from Construction, Education, Manufacturing and Facilities Management sectors. **www.bsif.co.uk

Eradication service to slash £150m+ cost of ‘knotweed blight’ A company based in Wales claims it has the answer for hundreds of sites which are too expensive to develop or build on because they are blighted by Japanese Knotweed. The announcement follows a report by the UN-backed CABI environmental organisation entitled ‘The Economic Cost of Invasive Non-Native Species to Great Britain,’ which in 2010 estimated the cost of Japanese Knotweed on GB development sites alone at £150million – a figure which has rocketed as Landfill Tax has massively increased the cost of removing contaminated soil.
service effectively removes all traces of Japanese Knotweed at around half the total cost of ‘dig and dump,’ and leaves processed soil on site, ready for development. The system has been used successfully for 15 years, with clients including the 2012 London Olympics, Welsh Government and Scottish local authorities, together with commercial and industrial landowners, developers and contractors across the UK. He added, “Unlike wholesale excavation, the Klaro service removes only the Japanese Knotweed, including root fragments. Landfill costs are minimal and because the Government wants to encourage treatment as an alternative to
“Sites are lying undeveloped because many owners fear it’s too expensive to clear Japanese Knotweed,” said Steve Blunt of GroundCover DBM, which specialises in landscape design, build and management. “Conventional ‘dig and dump’ removal of knotweed involves excavating and transporting hundreds of cubic metres of soil to landfill, where it is now taxed at £82.60 per tonne. A typical 200 cubic metre excavation will cost around £20,000 in contractor charges and tax – and leave a big hole in the ground.” Mr Blunt claims his company’s on-site Klaro®

dumping, clients can usually offset expenses by claiming Land Remediation Tax Credits. The bottom line is that using Klaro is typically half the cost of ‘dig and dump’.” Because Japanese Knotweed is classed as a Controlled Waste, the Klaro service operates under an Environmental Permit from the Environment Agency. It uses a self-propelled, chemical-free soil processing unit, purpose-designed for removing Japanese Knotweed by GroundCover DBM, which has offices in Port Talbot, South Wales, and Ruthin, North Wales. The GroundCover DBM website includes a useful free guide for identifying Japanese Knotweed at each stage of growth, together with options for eradicating it. The company also offers feasibility studies for building and development site owners to identify the most cost-effective knotweed control and eradication methods. Waste Plan Solutions Ltd Waste Plan Solutions Ltd was founded in 2009 by Lara Ayris to produce and manage site Waste Management Plans for the construction industry. In 2011, the company’s bespoke online SWMP software (www.wasteplan. co.uk) was launched to speed up the management process and it is now also used by many companies who wish to manage their SWMPs themselves for a more cost-effective solution. During its 5 year existence, WPS has evolved in line with client requirements, so WPS now finds itself focussed more on Considerate Constructors Scheme consultancy, assisting clients to achieve the necessary accreditation level. In some instances WPS manages the complete CCS process for a site, thus freeing up the Project/Site Manager to focus on ‘the build,’ in other cases they simply provide the necessary elements to satisfy the ‘environmental’ needs of the site. In fact, WPS finds itself more often than not, assisting clients to achieve Planning compliance and given the varying nature of such, Lara and
her consultants are continuously solving tomorrow’s problems today. As a measure of the company’s success it was awarded Small Business of the Year in 2011 by East Midlands Centre for the Built Environment (EMCBE) and Lara herself won the coveted Outstanding Woman in Construction 2012 award as recognition for her drive, passion and achievements within the Industry. Ecobuild Show Review
Sustainable Design, The UK’s number 1 supplier Long Rake Spar acquires new Construction and site in the South East of Timber Canopies Energy Ecobuild, a specialist trade show considered to be the world’s largest construction event, proved to be yet another great success when it swung into action this March. The exhibition, which focuses on sustainable design and the built environment, saw over 600 industry experts take to the stage to educate and inspire the many thousands of attendees who turned up over the course of the two days. The programme featured seven seminar streams across two conference arenas, whereby many top ministers and architects prompted debate regarding the subjects of green energy, design, building performance, BIM, water, solar and refurbishment. Suppliers exhibited innovative products suitable for new build, refurbishment and commercial and domestic buildings, and visitors benefitted from an exciting array of interactive features (such as live demonstrations). The next edition of the Ecobuild will take place on the 8-10 March 2016 when it will once again return to Excel, London. www.ecobuild.co.uk

These visual fittings replicate the patterns created in the last century to create a homely and welcoming atmosphere which will not only enhance the property’s appearance but will also increase its value. Timber Door Canopies is an exceptional company due to the fact it can facilitate individual specifications – all of its timber products are adaptable – as opposed
Timber Door Canopies by George Woods
Everyone has seen the beautiful old door canopies still to be found in villages and towns throughout the country. For hundreds of years, decorative woodwork has been used to enhance otherwise plain cottages and houses, but the practice came to an end in the thirties. Since then we have had decades of unattractive, plain housing design, unrelieved by any decorative feature. George woods replicate as closely as possible the patterns created in the last century, often by local carpenters, styles which still seem well proportioned, graceful yet functional. Your canopy is delivered part assembled for ease of fitting, except for the tiles. Full instructions are included, all well within the capacity of the average handyman.

Its comprehensive service ensures that customers can alter the design and build of the products to fit their personal preferences – even the roofing can be finished accordingly with different tiles or lead. The new 20 acre location offers unparalleled logistical efficiency, giving customers in the South East and London the opportunity to source products from a local site, thus decreasing the cost and carbon footprint of their supply chain.
Once developed, the site will greatly increase Long Rake Spar’s stock holding facilities enabling the company to respond more rapidly to customer demands and increase their national presence as a decorative aggregate supplier. T +44 (0)1629 636210 sales@longrakespar.co.uk www.longrakespar.co.uk

What’s more, the grass continues to recover after use, so laborious maintenance isn’t necessary. Wonderlawn is also the best choice for your pets. Its revolutionary petfillplus product provides the perfect solution when it comes to the infuriating issue of dogs’ toilet habits. Usually,
cleaning synthetic grass is difficult and timeconsuming, and isn’t largely successful as it can retain unpleasant odours and cause potential health and safety risks for you and your family. Petfillplus eliminates this problem, as its special infill is organic, eco-friendly and absorbs urine, preventing the ammonia from forming a gas, which is the main cause of lingering smells. The Icynene Insulation System The Icynene Insulation System is a soft, flexible, breathable, foam insulation and air barrier system. Sprayed as a liquid Icynene expands to 100 times its initial volume in seconds filling every nook, cranny and penetration into walls, ceilings and floors. Icynene’s unique formulation sets it apart from other insulation products offering many advantages over traditional insulation materials and more modern alternatives. While all materials of equal thermal resistance perform identically under laboratory conditions the same is not true in real life; some insulation materials off-gas which, over time, diminishes their effectiveness, others allow the passage of air through gaps between them and other building components. Installing Icynene ensures no loss of performance and it will remain the same over the lifetime of the building. Minimising air leakage from a building enables the correct design of heating and ventilation systems, saving money on the initial installation and future running costs. Buildings with Icynene installed have easily reached Passivhaus standards for air leakage without the use of membranes and tapes. Needing only a short installation period, Icynene can save you valuable build time and is therefore
extremely cost-effective compared to other products, not only that but you benefit from insulation and airtightness in one application. The Icynene Insulation System is 100% water blown containing no toxic chemicals. Icynene doesn’t contain any HFC’s, CFC’s, HFA or HCFC’s and it remains soft and flexible accommodating any normal expansion, contraction or movement within a building. So whether you plan to build, renovate or upgrade the Icynene Insulation System will deliver the performance you can count on for a lifetime of savings and comfort. Tridonic’s new PREMIUM TALEXXdriver series has been designed to keep pace with rapid developments in LED technology and offers an extremely high degree of flexibility. It features the new digital ‘ready2mains’ interface which uses the existing mains cable for data transfer. Different casing versions and output classes with applicationoptimised operating ranges make the LED Drivers ideal for a wide range of professional LED solutions. Thanks to ready2mains it is now easy to configure control gear with manually settable output current and integrate it in existing test equipment. One of the advantages over the old method of setting the current manually is that data transfer is rapid and much less
susceptible to error because no manual operations are required. Simple integration in automated workflows results in huge potential cost savings in the production of LED luminaires. Nevertheless, TALEXXdrivers in the PREMIUM series can still be programmed via the DALI interface and manual resistance plugs can still be used. Free CPD Guide to Energy Savings Opportunity Chronos makes a splash in Scheme the style stakes Organisations facing the compulsory requirements of the Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme (ESOS) by the end of this year will be interested to hear of a free, CPD-certified guide from Mitsubishi Electric. The guide looks in detail at the scheme which is a mandatory energy assessment mechanism for large companies in the UK. Businesses which qualify for ESOS must carry out assessments every four years, with the first to be completed by the end of 2015. ESOS is one of the key requirements mapped out to help the EU meet its 20% energy saving target for 2020. Designed to comply with the 2012 European Energy Efficiency Directive, ESOS establishes a set of binding measures to help the EU reach its 20% energy efficiency target by 2020.
The independent information in the guide has been compiled to outline the measures for success in the scheme and show companies how they can comply with the legislation.
Inta is introducing its slickest showering range to date, with a family of beautiful Italian-crafted, highly polished chrome products that give users the most emotive and desirable bathroom experience yet.
The free guide can be downloaded at Mitsubishi Electric’s dedicated document library: http://library.mitsubishielectric. co.uk/pdf/book/Energy_Savings_ Opportunity_Scheme_CPD_Guide

The Interchangeable Probe Handle ETI have introduced a new thermocouple temperature probe that allows the user to replace the stainless measuring tip, rather than replacing the whole probe, saving both time and money. Each handle incorporates a miniature thermocouple socket, allowing a variety of thermocouple probes to be quickly connected to a single thermometer. The benefits are both flexibility of use and reduced cost of purchasing a complete new temperature probe. Being most often in use, the stainless steel tip of the probe is exposed to excess heat, physical abuse or as is often the case, the probe simply wears out. It is therefore now possible to achieve a significant in cost, typically 50% by replacing only the working end (the tip) of the temperature probe. Each handle incorporates a one metre
retractable, coiled thermocouple lead and miniature connector suitable for use with any type K thermocouple based thermometer irrespective of the manufacturer. ETI offers a wide range of plug mounted thermocouple probes suitable for use with the interchangeable probe handle, including probes ideal for measuring air/gas, liquids, semi-solids or surface temperatures. The interchangeable probe handle (order code 323-950) is competitively priced at ÂŁ18 each, exclusive of VAT and available direct from Electronic Temperature Instruments Ltd.
