Hauraton drainage at Heslington East Campus, University of York With the Heslington East Campus site being quite flat, deep drains were not possible so rainwater from roofs, road and pathways had to be directed in a series of culverts, surface drainage channels and rills, eventually discharging into a lake. The Sustainable Urban Drainage Scheme included the control of rainwater from roofs via downpipes into a series of buried, stepped shallow culverts made from two sizes of FASERFIX® SUPER channel fitted with solid ductile iron covers. Surface water drainage with ductile iron gratings were provided in the same channel runs where channels crossed paved footpaths or asphalted areas. Pairs of FASERFIX® SUPER 300 channels fitted with solid covers were also installed adjacent to each other in the rills to create tunnels under roadways and paths. RECYFIX® SLOTTED channels with their unobtrusive galvanised slot inlets were specified
for the pedestrian routes and concourses. Colin Taff, Hauraton‘s Project Engineer comments about the project, “Over 1,600 metres of Hauraton drainage channel have been installed by Howard Civil Engineering Limited with no breakages reported during the installation stages.” For full case study, go to: www.drainage-projects.co.uk

Breaking the mould: Hitachi Power Tools provides tougher, faster and more advanced performance Hitachi’s tougher, faster and more advanced power tools are giving construction professionals the high performance and peace of mind they demand, explains Simon Miller, Brand Manager. Hitachi Power Tools are designed to give the very best performance, whatever the task may be. For material removing work, which can be a tough job and one where power and user comfort have to be combined, two new tools have been recently added to our range. These are the DH40MEY SDS-max rotary demolition hammer and the H90SG heavy duty breaker, both of which combine user safety with the powerful performance and resilience demanded by professionals. The DH40MEY SDS-max rotary demolition hammer features a brushless motor designed to reduce maintenance and increase durability. To increase performance, tool manufacturers like Hitachi are turning their attention to developing extremely efficient electric motors. Brushed motors produce sparks, friction and heat, so the introduction of brushless motors has been in an effort to maximize efficiency, sometimes providing as much as twice the performance of a brushed motor.
The brushless motor technology featured in the DH40MEY performs 50% more efficiently compared to conventional brushed motors. Brushless motors also improve dust proofing, which is important for installers as it gives the power tools a longer service life, saving you time and money, not just in respect of cleaning your power tools, but replacing them too. The brushless motor can increase working time by up to 40% when used on those longer high-volume drilling jobs. With Hitachi’s three-year warranty also available on the tool (online registration required), trade professionals can be assured of its performance levels and that it has been manufactured for a long life on site. Weighing in at 7.5kg and with a power output of 1,150W, the DH40MEY, with its aluminium housing, is therefore perfect for those tough demolition and material removal jobs. This mains powered tool provides high drilling performance, even with extension cables and it is compatible with petrol generators, thanks to Hitachi's unique compact and high efficiency inverter circuit. The DH40MEY also offers variable speeds, which can be changed at the touch of a

button, and the large trigger and mode select switch are easily accessible. Drill bits can be mounted with one push and constant speed control technology makes sure no demolition power is lost. A low vibration rear handle and Hitachi’s User Vibration Protection (UVP) system increases operator comfort and safety. For bigger demolition projects, the powerful H90SG Heavy Duty Breaker offers class leading demolition performance. Weighing in at 32kg, the breaker has impact energy of 70J and a full load impact rate of 1,000/ min. The breaker again features the Hitachi User Vibration Protection (UVP) system, which restricts the tri-axial vibration to only 7.7 m/s2. The breaker’s aluminium housing body has also been designed to offer greater durability on site, while the low vibration handles have soft grips to further dampen vibration. Subject to terms and conditions, it is also backed by a three-year warranty for added peace of mind. This becomes available when the tool is registered online within 28 days of purchase. The 1st directive relates to EN 1090-1, Factory Production Control, required for CE Marking of Structural Metalwork From July 1st 2014 any ‘series’ manufactured structural metal components or kits that have been either made in the UK or imported, and to which a harmonised European standard applies, must comply with the CPR & CE marking requirements. The harmonised European standard that applies to structural metalwork is BS EN 1090-1:2009 and it is a criminal offence to supply structural metalwork after the 1st of July 2014 unless it conforms to this standard and carries a legitimate CE mark.
We developed an online tool ‘TUV UK EN 1090 Quickscan’ to help companies determine whether their products fall under EN 1090, thus requiring CE Marking.

The resin flooring specialists demonstrated how a combination of sustainably manufactured screeds, underfloor heating and resin floor coatings can be applied within large-scale commercial and industrial constructions. The rapid installation speeds of these systems and the benefits that they have for end users has made Flowcrete UK a popular flooring partner for many of London’s high-rise residential developments. At Flowcrete UK’s stand, visitors watched a video on how to install the innovative Isocrete Alpha Screed. An evolution of traditional anhydrite flowing screeds, the Isocrete Alpha Screed can be supplied to the site either ready mixed or in a mobile mixing unit, depending on the project’s needs. The screed material is pumped to each level of the development, quickly supplying each floor with a self-levelling screed layer. A faster drying time than traditional screeds and a laitance free finish that doesn’t require sanding drastically cuts down on the installation time – a useful benefit for projects on a tight construction timetable.

range of colours, styles and effects to choose from. The durability of resin coatings means that the building’s architects and operators can rest assured that the final finish will retain its appearance and functionality for an extended period of time.
The Isocrete Alpha Screed can be combined with the Isowarm underfloor heating system, which can deliver efficiency savings of up to 30% compared to traditional heating methods.
The seamless resin terrazzo system Mondéco can even be installed in bespoke patterns to form unique pieces of art underfoot. Decorative aggregates such as mother of pearl, mirror glass, metal and marble are added into the finish of a Mondéco system to create a shimmering lustre across the floor’s surface.
Flowcrete UK’s wide range of decorative floor coatings attracted a lot of attention over the exhibition’s two days thanks to the ability of these systems to provide architects with a

Can Hybrid Technology save Construction? By Rajesh Ram
Celtic and BiogenieEnGlobe at London build
In 2011, orders for new construction projects fell by 5% to £3.6B, which was less than half of the long-term average and just 30% of the 2007 peak. This sharp drop forced a lot of construction firms to make some extreme cuts to their workforce or go out of business altogether. With the decline in demand for new construction projects, how could firms make the biggest impact to their bottom line with a minimal investment without sacrificing quality or increasing project timelines? Moving from paper to electronics Rather than deploying yet another IT system in-house or investing more in marketing efforts, going paperless and cutting infrastructure costs by moving files to the cloud seemed to be the best option for these firms. The cloud enables construction firms boost productivity and collaboration, easily share project files and contracts, and eliminate headaches with managing paper copies of files. They can cut costs and time without sacrificing quality. Does the cloud provide all of the answers? While the cloud proved to be very beneficial for reducing costs and
Egnyte at Stand D40
easing business processes around collaboration and file sharing, it also came with many limitations. Especially for the Construction industry, these teams need continuous access to the latest blueprints and CAD drawings, and with limited bandwidth on job sites, the cloud can only handle so much. Editing and sharing blueprints with spotty Internet is difficult. These files are large! Putting in monetarily, for one job, a bound set of paper blueprints could cost an astonishing £15,000! Think about the impact on your network by working 100% digitally. This puts major constraints on the network and forces IT to invest in complex infrastructure such as WAN accelerators and caching appliances to support a cloud-only deployment. And, then there is the issue of losing access to files completely when the Internet is down. No access = loss of time, money and productivity. With these associated costs, should firms go back to the traditional route of printing the blueprints? With the high
costs associated with printing these blueprints every time a new version is created, and the issues with working from the wrong, outdated set of blueprints that can cause costly rework, going back is just not an option. So what’s the next step for construction companies? Are you looking to upgrade your infrastructure and improve your bottom line? Visit us at: www.egnyte.com or call: +44 (0)845 528 0588 for more information.

Hybrid Energy Storage Systems It is a fact that most of the energy produced from sources such as Generators, Solar, Wind plus a host of portable and renewable sources simply goes to waste. In order for any electrical generating source to be truly energy efficient the amount of electricity produced must be equal to the exact amount electrical energy required at any given time. This of course is neither practical nor achievable. Without an ability to store the ‘over production’, any energy producing source will continue to produce energy for which there is no demand. This energy as a result simply gets ‘dumped.’ In periods of little or no demand Wind Turbines continue to turn, Sun continues to shine on PV panels and Generator engines continue to run. Hybrid Energy Storage Systems act like a giant rechargeable battery. Whilst connected to an energy producing source it will harvest electrical energy that can then be held in storage for use at a later date. They are made up of a bank of rechargeable cells that contain the electrical energy, and deliver the power though a device known as an inverter that converts the stored energy into useable power. It will provide electrical energy in either single or 3Phase form, at a range of power outputs depending on the model. They can be used in a number of different ways depending on the situation and the application. They lend themselves perfectly where there are large variances in the load on a generator throughout a given period. They can, in these cases, be used to cater for all the base load requirement of a site without the need for a constantly running generator. They can also be used where there is a need for power and an engine cannot be used because of both noise and emissions

Systems can be used indoors, without any issues and can be connected to generators, the mains, solar or a combination of all three to harvest and store energy. The performance of any energy storage system depends almost entirely on the cell’s which capture and discharge the ‘Electrical Energy.’ This is the battery, the technology and the heart of the system. Battery technology has moved on considerably in the last decade particularly in the area of consumer electronics such as mobile phones. Beyond this area, large capacity battery technology has lagged someway behind. Much of this type of technology is lead acid based or variant of. A-Bird has invested in the only systems currently available that utilise the latest Lithium Based battery technology. Lithium Batteries allow for faster charging and discharging and have greater depth of discharge allowing all the harvested energy to be used. The micro-coatings are on their peak. For several years, microcement have become very fashionable, and filled magazines of architectural publications with sophisticated finishes and desing possibilities. Every day we are covering more shops, terraces, swimming pools, large lounges, bathrooms, wet rooms and kitchens that flaunt a steely brightness, and the wavy movements, so popular on these kinds of materials. Waterproof and with the possibility of being applied over any existing surface on a fast installation process, it has become the perfect solution for both new constructions and refurbishment. But the traditional micro–coatings are not particularly resistant. As well as wood, they can be scratched easily to certain bumps or edges. Considering, also, granites and limestone floors can be stained with abrasive substances or acids. Until now all
micro-coverings have left signs of ageing on their surface, small cracks, marks and stains that are created by everyday use. Topcret laboratories have developed BAXAB, a completely different technology when enabled, for the first time, uses a material which is virtually indestructible. The high strength of BAXAB allows a prolonged and intensive use, not only in residential, but in commercial and public places with high transit areas. 5 real reasons to choose steel We often get questions about comparisons of different materials. Very frequently the choice is between steel versus plastic or aluminum. Our choice at Lindab is, and has always been, steel. We will give you 5 real reasons to choose steel for your rainwater system rather than PVC or aluminum. Most of these arguments go for all steel systems, but we think that we add even more to this fantastic material. We have been processing steel for more than 50 years and we buy over 200,000 tonnes of steel every year, so we feel that we know what we are doing. We also put our products through rigorous testing.
1. Steel has the lowest carbon footprint of all rainwater systems materials With steel you get a cost-effective and environmental friendly installation that is 100% recyclable. Our Rainline system is made from sheet steel, a raw material that has a natural place in today’s approach towards sustainability. 2. Steel stays in shape Virtually, all materials are affected by differences in temperature and grow and shrink as the weather changes. Compared to aluminum and plastic, steel has a lot smaller movement factor. This means that your installation is much more likely to last as connections
and fixation points won’t take such a beating as with other materials. 3. It’s really long lived A rainwater system made of steel can last in excess of 70 years. To aid to the lifespan we rustproof the material with a 275 grams zinc coating. This gives the system a self-healing quality where scratches and cuts are automatically sealed by zinc ions that migrate to recoat the uncovered steel. 4. Strong as steel Steel is the foundation of all modern construction, and there is a reason for that. Steel is strong. Snow, hail, falling tree branches and other circumstances can easily break a rainwater system made from aluminum or plastic materials. And even though we recommend that you are careful during the installation, a steel system is much more heavy duty than its competitors. 5. Steel is actually cheaper than plastic or aluminum The initial cost for a steel rainwater system is higher. We’re not saying that it’s not. But if you take into consideration the lifespan and maintenance needed for the respective systems, you actually save money. The lifecycle cost for a steel system is considerably lower than any other system out there. For more information, contact: +44 (0)121 585 2780, email: rainline@lindab.co.uk or visit: www.lindab.co.uk

Adding value to your business Whatever the future, we can be certain of one thing, and that is of constant change. ISO standards mirror the pace of change, regularly revising standards to reflect the industry for today and tomorrow.
There are an array of ISO standards that your business can become certified for, including; BS OHSAS 18001 (occupational health & safety for companies particularly concerned with the health and safety of its employees). The ultimate global benchmark for quality management and without a doubt the mostly widely recognised ISO… is ISO9001 (used to evaluate the quality management systems of a business).
ISOs (International Standards) are woven into our lives as a trusted symbol of quality. Unknowingly, you come into contact with ISO Standards on a daily basis. Hundreds of signs and symbols are crossing language barriers to communicate important messages to you, from recycling logos on your drinks bottle to the stop signs in the road. There are many reasons why businesses should be making the public aware of their ISO certification. Firstly, the fact that you have obtained ISO certification clearly demonstrates that you care about quality, something
that is vitally important within the supply chain. You may also be surprised by the new opportunities that arise as word of your certification spreads.

Starrett Core Ejector addresses an ago old problem
Market-leading manufacturer of commercial and industrial air curtains
Following comprehensive product testing and evaluation at its facility in Jedburgh, the L.S. Starrett Company is launching a cost-effective and simple solution to an age old problem. The company’s new Core Ejector for bi-metal hole saws has been designed and developed to effectively remove the slug of material that usually ends up inside the cup of the hole saw once it passes through the sheet material being cut.
Thermoscreens manufacture high quality easy to use air curtains. They are an international company committed to excellence and innovation, supplying HVAC solutions and products to fulfil customer’s needs by supplying an expanding range of niche products and services. Thermoscreens mission is to serve the contractor market with quality climate solutions available through a wide range of sources at a competitive price.
Comprising of a precision tapered spring and an aluminium pressure plate the Core Ejector has been created to improve productivity and efficiency, as well as operator health and safety. As Marketing Manager, John Cove, explains, “Safely removing the annular disc of sheet material that often becomes jammed inside the hole during normal operating conditions is an age old problem that many customers have faced. Usually the operator will stop the saw, remove the entrapped material by sliding a drift or even a screwdriver in to the slots in the side of the hole saw.
16
ejecting the disc of raw material before it becomes trapped. Fitting the Core Ejector is very straightforward as the saw’s pilot drill slides through the internal diameter of the nickel-plated spring. The narrowest wrap of the spring is precisely sized to sit on the shank of the drill, holding the Core Ejector in position so it rotates with the hole saw when it is in use and keeping it correctly located when it is not running. As well as the lost time required to perform this task, there is an obvious danger to the operator as the teeth of the saw are naturally sharp and will be at an elevated temperature.” The Core Ejector addresses these problems in a simple and reliable way. As the saw cuts into the sheet material, the aluminium pressure plate compresses the spring inside the cup of the saw. When the saw breaks through the spring will act on the pressure plate as it returns to its natural open state, effectively
Available in six sizes to cover a range of hole saw diameters, the Core Ejector works best for sheet material below 7mm thick with optimum performance achieved with material between 2 to 5mm thick. The range starts with the KA8-1 Core Ejector for saws between 20 and 24mm diameter, stepping in increments up to the largest KA8-6 for saws between 133 and 210mm diameter. The company aims to grow new and existing markets offering the highest levels of sales performance and service, develop and adapt technologies and products for individual market needs, appoint partners who are true to the brands philosophy and vision, share knowledge and expertise across our sales network and group companies and maximise profitability and growth becoming a key contributor to the success of the CCS group. Thermoscreens have successfully incorporated BIM software into its systems. Designers use BIM to explore alternative concepts, conduct value engineering and optimise their designs, contractors use a BIM model
to ’rehearse’ construction, coordinate drawings and prepare shop and fabrication drawings and owners use the model to optimise building maintenance, renovations and energy efficiency, as well as to monitor life cycle costs. Due to the complexity of gathering all the relevant information when working with BIM on a building project, Thermosceens along with many other companies have developed software designed specifically to work in a BIM framework. These packages (e.g.: ArchiCAD, Autodesk Revit, ARCHIBUS EIM with BIM 4.0) differ from architectural drafting tools such as AutoCAD by allowing the addition of further information (time, cost, manufacturers’ details, sustainability and maintenance information, etc.) to the building model. Building Information Management (BIM) is a collaborative way of working as it enables more efficient ways of designing, creating and maintaining assets. Building information models are in their simplest for 2D or 3D computer aided design drawings but more commonly they have a further dimension which is the product or asset data.
Ockwells sponsors this issue of BCR UK: see them on page 8
Whilst the concept of BIM is not new it now has greater impetus in the UK as the government has mandated that all public sector centrally procured construction projects will be delivered using BIM by 2016. BIM will be used through the complete lifecycle of a building project. During the design phase BIM can be used to detect collisions in the building components. BIM envisages virtual construction in order to reduce uncertainty and improve health and safety and simulate the potential impact of changing components. project required repairs to the fabric of the buildings. Ronacrete Approved Contractor Gunite (Eastern) Ltd was subcontracted by Lengard to carry out concrete repair and protective coatings, mastic joint sealing and brickwork repair. Product and application Gunite cut out and prepared areas of damaged concrete, cleaned the newly exposed reinforcement and primed it with Ronacrete Standard Primer to prevent further corrosion. A further coat of primer was applied to the reinforcement when the concrete was primed, immediately before application of RonaBond HB40 high build polymer modified mortar. RonaBond HB40 is particularly suited to the repair of overhead concrete, such as the underside of concrete staircases, which can become damaged over time, especially when exposed to the elements as the staircases are on the St Saviour’s estate.

Revolutionary ‘security brick’ is a Knock on! screw outs a welcome must-have for every British home Replaceable addition for outdoor power sockets A new security product designed to be an integral part of a building is set to deliver unrivalled levels of protection against thieves attempting to steal valuable items stored in garages or outside properties. BrickLock is a revolutionary security anchor point that offers a flush joint when fitted into a brick or breeze block wall, or sunk into a concrete floor. Made from top quality British steel, the high security product is recommended for the new build market, but can also be easily integrated into an existing wall. BrickLock is suitable for securing bicycles, motorcycles, boats, ATVs, jet skis, trailers, caravans, as well as other valuable items, such as tool boxes, ladders etc. As it is designed to be an integral part of the wall or floor, the BrickLock securing point does not require any bolts – as is the case with boltdown anchors – and therefore, does not depend on them when having to withstand an attack. The product is designed and produced in
If you admit to getting the cable knock out wrong from time to time – and who doesn’t? – You’ll like the latest refinement to Timeguard’s top-selling range of IP66 Weathersafe outdoor power sockets and switches! They’ve done away with old-school cable knock outs and introduced replaceable M20 threaded screw outs.
the UK, taking into consideration the British building regulations. To this end, BrickLock is supplied with a foam insulation insert that also acts as support for mortar when installed into a wall. Thanks to its concealed appearance when installed, BrickLock can be utilised both inside a garage or shed, as well as outside of a property, offering unbeatable security for valuable items. For more information on BrickLock, go to: www.bricksecure.co.uk, or call LB Supplies on: +44 (0)1623 624500, email: info@lbsupplies.co.uk.
So, if you do make a mistake, you can simply screw it back in. You won’t lose the unit’s impressive IP66 rating either, which is more than enough for even the British climate, and can get straight on with the job. In the past, your options after making a mistake were to have to wire a device in awkwardly, accept that its weather proofing integrity was lost, or scrap it and buy another one. So this simple addition of screw-outs instead of knock outs will make your life a lot easier and reduce your costs. It is a pretty obvious feature for an outside socket you might think, but changes like these costs a lot to develop, test and then introduce on the
production line, and various other manufacturers have not yet been willing to invest. No doubt they will soon, as the market usually follows Timeguard as best it can. One thing no one else has been able to emulate is the superb appearance and ease of use of the Vision range. Timeguard’s mouldings allow for full sized polycarbonate windows that stay clear for years; while its patented neoprene seals that withstand opening and closing time and time again without compromising the IP66 rating when in use. The clear windows of the Weathersafe Vision models mean that users can see at a glance what the on/off status of an appliance plugged into an outdoor socket is, and this is clearly an added safety benefit. Naturally, the option of opaque covers is offered as well.
Invista sponsors this issue of BCR UK: see them on page 24
The new product options cover all your core requirements with single and double gang switched sockets, with neon on/off indicators, RCD’s sockets and fused spur RCD’s. IP68 Connectors Also new this summer is a selection of IP68 outdoor power connectors designed to connect cable runs safely in outdoor installations. Ideal for extending cable runs when installing Weathersafe power sockets, the range includes in-line connectors, ‘T’ connector and junction box, supplied with various seal sizes for differing cable entry. The additional protection afforded by the IP68 rating means these connectors are tested to withstand continuous immersion and can be safely used outdoors at ground level. The new Weathersafe range features in the latest Timeguard catalogue, out June 2015, and will be in wholesalers from 1st July 2015. Dickies keep hands safe Dickies, in collaboration with Kong, have carefully developed a new range of safety gloves, including Impact gloves with a glove to suit the most demanding of environments and tasks. The Dickies glove range is intended to offer something across a wide range of industrial sectors: construction, engineering, automotive, utility, mining and oil & gas. Dickies Impact gloves are manufactured from a wide range of carefully selected materials all combining to provide optimum safety, comfort and dexterity.
Depending upon the intended end use of the glove, padding and shock absorbent material, or Duraclad Rope Channel reinforcement, can be added to the palm. Other materials, such as foam nitrile, allow for an excellent grip. An EN 388 cut level 5 knit (ANSI/ISEA Level 4) can add additional protection. Waterproof variants are also available, as is a patented Diamond clad Silicone fused palm (Patent D568003), for the ultimate grip on wet and oily objects. High visibility options are also available in the range.
Metacarpal injuries are common when the worker’s hand slips and the back of the hand hits another object, severely bruising or even breaking the small bones in the back of the hand. To minimise this, Dickies Impact gloves have shockabsorbing TPR (Thermal Plastic Rubber) ergonomically added
The most incredible part of these Dickies gloves however is the fit and comfort, which is immediately apparent when trying on a Dickies impact glove.
as an exoskeleton to the back of the glove and knuckle areas to minimise bruising and breaks. Likewise the same TPR is added to the fingers and thumbs to provide protection against pinching and impact bruising.

Dickies is proud to announce that the UK Worker of the Year 2015 competition, to find Britain’s top workers and ultimately the UK Worker of the Year, is now in full swing. UK Worker of the Year 2015 is sponsored by Dickies, in association with Kawasaki. This year’s winner will have the luxury of being able to choose between a Kawasaki Ninja 300 and holiday vouchers up to the value of £5,000. Similar to last year, this year’s winner will also have the chance to win £100K cash at Brands Hatch at the final British Superbike meeting in October, should he/she predict the top 6 riders placing of the final BSB race.
Drawings are often emailed in PDF format, without any scale, or not to scale. As long as you have one accurate measurement, you will be able to scale and measure from the PDF. Free 30 day trial available on: www.quickscale.co/register
“Winning the competition has been great for me personally and my business. I would urge anyone who hears about the competition to have a go at entering or to nominate someone as an entrant. It costs nothing except a few minutes of time and those few minutes could prove to be incredibly worthwhile.” Maurice Morton, Sales & Marketing Director at Dickies added, “Given the on-going uncertainty that the country faces economically, a feel-good initiative of this type is more important than ever, to remind our nation’s work force that they have much to be proud of and look forward to.”

Energy Efficiency Many homeowners are looking at ways to utilise renewable energy to power and heat their homes, be it by utilising heat pump technology or the installation of solar panels. Panasonic has recently been involved in a unique residential property where both solutions have been installed and are working together to provide maximum energy savings. Delivering Energy Efficiency in Warwickshire – Originally a four-bedroom residential property situated in a village in Warwickshire, the homeowners invested the help of Nexus Building Solutions for a complete refurbishment and extra twobedroom extension. The family was looking for a heating solution that would not only fit in well with the existing oil burner and radiators, but also provide reliable and superb-quality performance. Specifying 4kW Panasonic 250W HIC panels to accompany Panasonic’s T-CAP Monobloc Aquarea heat pump, PRO Partner Premium Installers of the month, Nexus Building Solutions has helped the property to benefit from extremely energyefficient and cost-effective underfloor heating, which runs through six different zones within the house. Supplying heat to an extension for an elderly relative, the bedroom, living room and downstairs bathroom, as well as a two-storey bedroom and living room for the rest of the family, now all benefit from Panasonic’s renewable technology.

Cost Benefits There were two key motivators which lead them to decide on a new Panasonic Aquarea air source heat pump. Firstly the cost benefits; having a new large six-bedroom property meant heating costs were significant and they were keen to find a solution that kept them warm while reducing their energy bills. Secondly the heat pump’s compatibility with solar thermal technology meant that the family could qualify for Government rewards from the FiT scheme and any surplus would go straight back into the pump. The family are now saving money every month compared to their previous fuel bills. “Since fuel prices continue to rise, we have seen a change in our customer’s heating needs, requirements and priorities,” says Avnash Jhita, Operations Manager at Nexus Building Solutions. “Faced with an economic climate that stretches outgoings, home- owners want energy-efficient heating and hot water on demand. Offering a heating solution that is affordable, reliable and offers an attractive return on investment, is vital for stimulating business.” Panasonic’s Aquarea heat pump does just this. With an impressive COP of

4.75 and option to add on a Panasonic PV panel, consumers are provided with a completely renewable and cost-effective energy solution, which sits in perfectly with current government incentives. “We are delighted with the results from installing Panasonic’s Aquarea heat pump and PV solar panels,” says the homeowner. “Not only is the house warm and cosy, but the extra energy generated from the solar panels is transferred straight back into the pump. We’re so impressed that we’re currently in discussions with Nexus Building Solutions to install another Aquarea heat pump that will replace our oil system in the main house when a retrofit is required.” Contact www.panasonic.com/uk

UK Construction Week puts Training in the Spotlight
With apprentices and house building top of the agenda at the state opening of Parliament, UK Construction Week has announced a string of training focused content at the show this October. Outlining the new Conservative government’s plans for the coming parliamentary term, the Queen revealed ambitious targets during her speech last week, which include building 200,000 starter homes over the next five years, as well as creating 3million new apprenticeships. While construction industry commentators have, for the most part, welcomed the renewed focus this will bring to the industry, others – including the Federation of Master Builders – have warned that the targets are inextricably linked, as without meeting the apprenticeships goal, the industry will not have the capacity to deliver such a high volume of housing construction. Recognising the growing significance of this issue over the coming years, UK Construction Week has placed a strong focus on training and development at the exhibition, with several skills-based sessions on the main seminar stage. In addition, the Homebuilding and Site Zones at the Build Show, one of the nine events to make up UK Construction Week, will look at the relationship between apprenticeships and house building in more depth. The Homebuilding theatre will kick things off with a keynote panel discussion asking how the industry can improve traditional skills training to overcome shortages. Led by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) and joined by Andy George, Head of Talent Management at Barratt Developments and Seb Balcombe, Planning Manager at K10, the discussion will examine how builders can work more closely with schools and colleges to recruit entry level candidates – as well as looking at the impact of alternatives solutions, such as offsite construction. Later that morning,
Andy George will lead another session looking at best practice approaches to apprenticeships in housing and will share some of the insights he has gained during his time at Barratt Developments. In the Site Zone, the CITB will present a masterclass, sharing everything SMEs need to know about how apprenticeships can help their business. The session will look at how to start the process, designing an effective programme, choosing the right apprentices and making sense of the various schemes, funding and grants available. Nathan Garnett, Show Director, commented: “Apprenticeships will be absolutely critical to achieving the government’s ambitious starter home targets over the next few years – but this is not just an issue for the house building industry. Finding skilled labour is a struggle faced by the whole construction industry right now, but many people are unsure how to go about dealing with the issue. We hope that by providing a platform in which to debate the problem, share solutions and identify best practice, will go a long way to helping visitors and exhibitors start to overcome this challenge.” Bringing together nine shows under one roof, UK Construction Week will be the biggest construction trade event the UK has seen in years. Taking place at the Birmingham NEC from 6 – 11 October (with the trade only days from 6 – 8 October) the event will unite 1,000 exhibitors with an expected audience of 55,000 visitors. Visitors will be able to attend the Build Show incorporating Civils Expo, Grand Designs Live, Timber Expo, the Surface and Materials Show, Energy 2015, Kitchens & Bathroom Live, Plant & Machinery Live, HVAC 2015 and Smart Buildings 2015. Timber Door Canopies by George Woods
Water Storing Granules
Everyone has seen the beautiful old door canopies still to be found in villages and towns throughout the country.
Save Water
For hundreds of years, decorative woodwork has been used to enhance otherwise plain cottages and houses, but the practice came to an end in the thirties. Since then we have had decades of unattractive, plain housing design, unrelieved by any decorative feature.
Get bigger, better plants sooner
George woods replicate as closely as possible the patterns created in the last century, often by local carpenters, styles which still seem well proportioned, graceful yet functional.
Improve soil structure
Your canopy is delivered part assembled for ease of fitting, except for the tiles.

Building & Construction Review is pleased to commend Energenie for being presented with its highly prestigious Product Innovation award. The business, which is based in Harlow, Essex, has roots dating back to 1996, but in those times its primary focus was on establishing itself as a power connections brand manufacturing converter plugs. The enterprise instantly soared to success; securing custom with some of the world’s most notable electrical product distributors (such as Sony, Bosch and GHD), and its reputation continued to strengthen, particularly in 2009 when the Energenie name was officially introduced. It was at this point when the company’s range extended considerably; liaisons with a highly-skilled inventor brought stand-by savers to the team’s attention and with it, the chance of even greater recognition.
