Ground Sun provide a design and build construction service for all types of residential and commercial projects. With an emphasis on ‘green construction’ we offer particular expertise in Heat pumps design/installation, helical screw pile installation, SIP (Structural Insulated Panel) construction, heat recovery and underfloor heating. We are technology neutral so Ground Sun can therefore ensure that your renewable technologies are integrated to maximum efficiency within your building and that it is a smart, low cost building to run for the future. Ground Sun are UK distributing and service agents for Austrian-manufactured Ochsner and UK-manufactured Kensa heat pumps. We are main agents and designers/installers for Chance® Helical Piling Systems and provide a design and build service for SIP (Structural Insulated Panel) construction. We distribute, design and install mechanical heat recovery ventilation and underfloor heating and cooling systems. Heat Pumps Ground Sun design, supply and install renewable heating and cooling with heat pumps. We are passionate about heat pump technology and are designers and installers of heat pump systems that deliver low cost, sustainable heating and cooling. This technology saves you money with the added benefit of reducing your carbon footprint. We are main agents and distributors of high quality Austrianmanufactured Ochsner Heat Pumps and UK-manufactured Kensa Heat Pumps. These heat pumps are amongst the most efficient and advanced in the
world and range from 2kW to 1MW with temperatures up to 95°C, so are suitable for all projects from small domestic to large scale commercial and industrial schemes. We are accredited installers under MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme). MCS is an internationally recognised quality assurance scheme, supported by the Department of Energy and Climate Change. Accreditation assures consumers that the company installs heat pumps to the highest quality industry standards, it also ensures that our installations are eligible under the Government's Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme. See Grants and Incentives for more details. Screw Pile Foundations Excavating deep trenches in the ground is a risky and time consuming job. For example, if you have trees within 10 metres of your property and the ground conditions are clay, you should consider screw pile foundations as your engineer and building control are likely to require you to dig between 2.5 to 3 metres deep for traditional foundations. One of the major advantages of our screw pile rigs is they can operate in restricted access and be carried in and used as a handheld rig or be mounted on a small excavator. Pile Foundations Ground Sun is a certified installer of the Chance® Helical Pier Foundation System. Since 1912, Chance has been the international leader in earth anchoring. Their helical piles are used worldwide to secure residential and commercial buildings, tower foundations, heavy equipment foundations and many other deep foundation applications. The Helical Pulldown Micropile® is a system for constructing a grout column around the shaft of a standard Helical

How Pile Foundations are installed A hydraulic drive drill rig is used to install the screw into the ground. Additional displacement plates and extension shafts are bolted onto the shaft and the helical piles are pulled downwards. Torque is applied until the necessary load capacity has been achieved. A flowable grout fills the void, surrounding and encapsulating the shaft. The helical pile shaft is then cut off and screw pile plate is attached ready for ring beams to be installed. SIP Panels Ground Sun design and build smart, thermally advanced commercial and domestic buildings for a low carbon future. SIPs are Structural Insulated Panels used as an alternative to traditional building methods. Ground Sun advocates SIPs as a highly efficient and ecologically sound method of construction. SIPs can be used for residential or commercial buildings and in both cases lead to dramatically reduced heating bills and reduced carbon dioxide emissions. The panels are fabricated in the factory with an inner rigid polyurethane (PUR) core of insulation sandwiched between two outer skins of oriented strand board (OSB). Thermal Energy Components Building and Construction Review is pleased to feature TEC UK Ltd for securing its coveted Commitment to Excellence award. The air handling solutions company is a dedicated division of Klingenburg, an establishment bought into the UK just less than two years ago. Famously noted for its state-ofthe-art technology and premium products, TEC UK delivers highly functional innovations that make considerable contributions towards saving energy resources and reducing CO2 emissions. Andrew Patch, Country Manager at TEC UK, explained more about the brand’s prestigious status in the industry, “We have earned a market reputation as the most
innovative supplier of energy recovery components. With a wide range of models within each product group, we can offer customer-oriented solutions to both simple and sophisticated requirements in air-conditioning and ventilation technology. “Our clients value our custom-made system solutions, punctual deliveries, and unique production quality, whilst Klingenburg’s dedicated product development and mechanical engineering department enables us to rapidly set new standards.” Klingenburg’s heat exchangers and humidifiers are suitable for all space heating and cooling needs, serving great purpose in small apartments, large factories, cruise ships, spray paint shops and data-processing centres. TEC UK’s line of Heat Recovery systems come in 4 different types, the
first option being the Rotary Heat Exchangers, which are unbeatable when it comes to recovering thermal energy in air-conditioning systems. Meanwhile, the GS range comprises components perfect for ventilation in small apartments, office complexes, farm stables, swimming pools, refrigerated stores and warehouses. Counterflow Plate Heat Exchangers recover up to 90% (by rigorous calculations) of existing room heat or cold and are used wherever a circulation of air is undesirable, as in this design the airstreams are completely separated. Another variety comes in the form of cross-flow plate heat exchangers (PWT), items best known for their outstanding resistance and robustness. These products are available in aluminium, epoxy-coated aluminium or stainless steel and can be utilised in industry, ventilation and extraction systems for adiabatic cooling and the cooling of electrical cabinets. The CERTO Humidifiers are the latest addition, incorporating patented technology to create a maintenance-friendly solution exuding power and reliability.
he commented. “We provide individual solutions, precisely tailored to our customers’ requirements. Thanks to our global service operations and highly-trained staff, we can resolve any problem on the spot.” Upon discussing the company’s future movements, Andrew summarised, “Our in-house research and development division is constantly striving to create new and innovative products to save energy and help protect the climate and environment. Our aim is to increase brand awareness and promote our cutting-edge range of products. We also plan to expand further in the UK and in the next 2/3 years as we hope to be manufacturing here in the UK.” Contact T +44 (0)1460 247111 info@tecukltd.co.uk www.tecukltd.co.uk
All of TEC UK’s products are certified by Eurovent and in its quest for consistency and credibility, the company has also secured ISO 9001: 2008 certification from The British Assessment Bureau. According to Andrew, it’s this dedication to going that one step further that really sets the company apart as a standout name, “Our priority for quality is just as important as the long service life of our products,”

Outdoor LED lighting: Traditional designs brought up to date One of the names you are most likely to hear when you enquire about replacing outdoor lighting with energy saving LEDs, is NIGHTeye from Timeguard, the firm that has consistently led the way with its combinations of innovative design, superior quality and fast-fix convenience. Design The original ultra-compact pan-and-tilt Timeguard LED NIGHTeyes broke the mold and were a completely new concept in outdoor lighting design. Small and yet remarkably powerful, these floodlights are compact and stylish enough to be used anywhere. A range of more business-like looking LED floodlights followed, with precision- designed lenses and reflector plates to ensure that the light that is emitted is not only diffused and more pleasing to the eye, but also give more comprehensive coverage for security.
However, successful as the first NIGHTeyes were, the market soon let it be known that nothing is ever going to displace the original, traditional bulkhead design altogether. So then Timeguard designed new LED bulkhead lights that are compact, strong and attractive, with the same design edge as the original NIGHTeye models. This season has seen the addition of New super slim options to the range. Made from solid diecast metal with polycarbonate lenses for impact resistance, they are tough enough for industrial and commercial installations and benefit from the even light pattern as do other models in the NIGHTeye range, thanks to the layout of the individual diodes behind the frosted light-diffusing lenses. Schools, colleges, offices and back yards everywhere win all-round: energy saving with faster payback, good looks, good quality and a straightforward installation job to replace old energy-guzzling bulkheads.
be suitable to last the intended life of the product and a heat sink to dissipate the heat produced and the all-important PIR detectors. The quality of these components is as important as that of the diode in building a long-lasting product. For instance, relatively few of the PIRs on the market are actually rated to switch LEDs which, despite their low rating, do generate a significant spike in switching. Some LED lamps do not even have proper cooling fins. Very cheap is rarely very cheerful. The most economical lighting of all is the lighting made from quality components which can be fitted and forgotten, and that usually means a trusted brand name like Timeguard. Quality and reliability Of course an LED lamp requires a lot more than the diodes – there is also a driver which needs to

Sustainable Excellence because our Environment Matters Manufactured and owned by Francis Flower, the leading supplier of specialised mineral materials and services established in 1953, Gypsol acts as an exceptional alternative to sand/cement screeds and polished concrete. The high calibre anhydrite freeflowing floor screed binder is meticulously manufactured in the UK and makes for the perfect supplement to underfloor heating. Having been established more than five decades ago, Francis Flower’s extensive experience in the milling, grinding, blending and storage of fine mineral powders has secured itself as a company you can trust to provide quality results. The business has worked comprehensively to process and stock an impressive range of products, which includes milled anhydrite, marble, bentonite and granulated & powdered minerals (as well as Gypsol anhydrite screed binder). The leading brand has fast become a staple product in the development and innovation of liquid screed. When compared to the more outdated and traditional flooring systems, Gypsol has proven to be more advantageous in a multitude of ways. Not only is it significantly cheaper, less problematic and more environmentally friendly (as it is constructed predominantly from a recycled material), it is also incredibly easy to apply. Paul Pepper, Managing Director of Francis Flower, commented: “The Gypsol product is a highly useful, innovative creation. Since introducing the product two and a half years ago we have received a fantastic amount of interest and sales have soared. We provide the basis for your company to produce a high quality floor screed and we create the demand in the market for you to sell into.” Gypsol anhydrite flowing screeds are available from Cemex, Hope Construction Materials, Aggregate Industries, Gallagers

of Maidstone, The Concrete Company, Breedon Aggregates England, and Able Screeders of London. Architects, designers, main contractors, self-builders and flooring contractors utilise this specialist ingredient in order to effectively enhance their industrial projects. The incorporation of Gypsol over underfloor heating systems lessens costs and increases sustainability, and tests have confirmed that those using anhydrite screeds can improve the co-efficient performance of an underfloor heating system by up to 25%. In addition, flow temperatures can be reduced by 40 to 50 Celsius (compared to the temperatures required for radiator systems). A recent addition to the Francis Flower portfolio is the Solida System, which is designed to provide a whole house heating solution by combining existing technologies and the Gypsol based flowing anhydrite floor screeds. The process involves incorporating Gypsol screed in separating floors in order to maximise desirability, asset value and useable space. “This system enables the screed to go on the first floor on timber floors, ensuring homeowners encapsulate underfloor heating effectively,” Paul explained. “As a sustainable alternative to radiators, the Solida System improves a house builder’s green credentials massively as it reduces energy use. We now have a number of customers using the Solida System, including the renowned timber frame

Reflecting quality and comfort We’re sure you’ve heard of Low-E Glass. Well this insulation works the same way. Low-E insulation is the thinnest most effective reflective insulation on sale in the UK and this year the manufacturer is celebrating their 25th year in business. Made from recycled material, without the use of solvents or adhesives, Low-E Insulation has one of the lowest Carbon Footprints of any insulation on the market. It carries a Class A/Class 1 Fire Rating for use in areas where similar products fall short. Unlike traditional Insulation, Low-E does not have to absorb heat before it becomes effective. It works by reflecting heat directly back to the source. The idea of using reflective layers to reduce heat loss is not new; it’s just never been done in such an effective manner. Don’t be misled by ‘shiny’ insulations that claim to reflect, they may reflect light but if they are made from plastic they won’t reflect heat in the same way. Low-E is made from 99.4% pure insulation grade aluminium. The closed cell foam ensures the
product won’t absorb moisture while also providing a thermal break, reducing the risk of condensation and interstitial condensation. Without multiple layers Low-E is very lightweight, easy to cut and with no dragging on screws, it’s extremely quick to install. Tested by the British Board of Agrément to 600Pa Low-E was found to have an air-leakage rate of ZERO, making it ideal for timber frame and new build construction. The latest improvements apply to the Right Pump ranges RSP, RHP and RGP and the premium ESP CPV range, all of which cover a wide number of solutions for positive or negative head installations as well as options for shower pumps or whole house pumps, supporting either a single or multiple outlets. Interestingly, their inspiration has been around for over 100 million years! Centrifugal action within the pump basically pushes incoming water radially outwards from the centre of a rotating impellor to deflect the water onto fixed blades. Flowfresh Floors Attain HACCP International Certification Resin flooring manufacturer Flowcrete UK has secured International HACCP Certification for its Flowfresh range of antimicrobial enhanced polyurethane floors. This certification means that food and beverage producers operating a Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) based food safety programme can specify flooring materials, safe in the knowledge that they will meet the relevant regulatory authority’s standards for safe procurement, production and processing as well as the requirements of the world’s leading quality and food safety standards. HACCP International certification is a globally recognised benchmark of food safety, and as such is an important set of criteria for businesses eager to gain access to lucrative export markets.
face of corrosive chemicals, moisture, impacts and thermal shock. If it cannot withstand these conditions then the floor can quickly fail – leading to germs and pathogens infiltrating hard to clean cracks. The importance of installing building materials that minimise contamination and the consequent risk of foodborne illnesses was highlighted in the Food Standards Agency’s (FSA) Annual Report of Incidents 2015. 1,645 contamination incidents were investigated and microbiological contamination accounted for nearly a quarter of them.
Flowcrete Group’s Technical Director, Grant Adamson, said, “Our polyurethane range has been able to achieve the HACCP International certification thanks to its ability to deliver a long list of strict food industry flooring requirements.”
The costs of these incidents are significant. Not only could a foodborne illness outbreak lead to serious financial and reputational damage for the producer – but every year the FSA estimates that nearly a million people in the UK are affected, with a net cost to the country of £1.5 billion.
The floor plays a crucial role in addressing contamination risks, as an inadequate floor can become a prime site of bacteria build-up. Not only does the floor have to provide a hygienic surface, it needs to do so in the
HACCP guidelines state that a seamless and impervious finish must be maintained at all times, even when subjected to a large-scale food processing facility’s intense working environment. Flowfresh has been specifically formulated to
provide a surface that will comply with food industry regulations for an extended period of time despite the sector’s inherently challenging conditions. The Polygiene® agent is homogenously distributed throughout the Flowfresh finish. This formulation means that physical damage to the coating won’t create a safe haven for contaminants that’s out of reach of the bacteria killing flooring ingredient. Flowfresh has also been proven to meet the ISO 22196 standard, which measures a surface’s antibacterial effectiveness on plastics and other non-porous surfaces. The polyurethane system underwent rigorous testing to show that it complied with this internationally recognised benchmark. To meet the HACCP International standard, floors also need to allow for adequate drainage and cleaning. A Flowfresh coating can be laid to falls and incorporate stainless steel drainage to quickly channel contaminants and excess liquid out of the area. Coving
can also be incorporated to create a seamless, easily cleanable transition to the wall and even the floor’s texture can be tailored to best suit the cleaning regime. A seamless, high performance polyurethane finish will also prevent common food industry by-products like fats, acids, blood and oils from seeping into the underlying concrete and damaging the substrate. Get in touch with your local Flowcrete representative today to find out more about how Flowfresh can help food and beverage facilities meet regulatory requirements and protect against the threat of bacterial contamination. Flowcrete UK’s expert team will be attending the UK Construction Week, on stand SM2/211 of the Surface Materials Show, and will be on hand to talk about how specific projects can create high performance resin floors. HOPEFlow used for significant Staffordshire military homes build Hope Construction Materials, the UK’s largest independent supplier of construction materials, has completed the supply of 12,500m3 of concrete for the build of more than 300 new military homes.
Paul Coleman, Area Commercial Manager at Hope Construction Materials, said the project highlighted a growing demand for high quality, quick-pour products. He said, “Since its launch the HOPEFlow product has proven particularly popular and we are delighted to have used it on what was an important and substantial building initiative.
The project, which launched in August, saw 346 new homes built, with Hope providing the concrete slab flooring for each home, using their HOPEFlow high-performance, self-compacting concretes, to ensure that the build was completed to a stringent timescale. Around 1,000 troops from the 16 Signal Regiment and 1 Armoured Division Signal Regiment will be housed on the Beaconside site, as part of the £51m ‘super garrison’ development funded by the Ministry of Defence. The timber frame housing build, the largest of its kind in Britain, is being fulfilled by social housing specialists Lovell. Typically a build of this size would take between three and four years, however to be able to accommodate troops returning from Germany, it needs to be completed in just 11 months. As such the HOPEFlow performance products were used in a bid to minimise cost and project duration, laying 20 slabs (and homes) per week as opposed to an average of four. By doing so groundwork subcontractor Chasetown were able to save time and money, pouring the slabs without the need of power floating, with slab construction time reduced by nearly 75%. HOPEFlow™ is a suite of high-performance, self-compacting concretes and flowing screeds that can be placed in a fraction of the time of conventional concrete. The product also provides a high-quality surface finish that requires little or no further remedial work. The range, which is available nationwide, is ideal for any situation where conventional concrete could be used, from foundations and floors to walls and columns. It flows quickly and easily around complex formwork and busy rebar, without the need for vibration, meaning there is no handarm vibration felt by users and less noise throughout the installation process.
“This was a large-scale project and there was a real desire to complete the build quickly and professionally to ensure available housing when our troops return to Britain. We’re pleased that by using HOPEFlow we vastly reduced the build time of the project to get the soldiers in their homes as soon as possible.” Throughout the build Hope supplied a total of 2,500m3 of HOPEFlow concrete and 10,000m3 of conventional concrete, from their Four Ashes and Staffordshire concrete plants respectively, with conventional concrete used to build the footings, drainage, curbing and road access. Both sites are within close proximity to the Beaconsfield site, ensuring that the carbon footprint of the project was kept to a minimum, in line with Hope’s ambitious sustainability targets.
Kevin Pugh, Contract Manager at Chasetown says, “We were working to particularly tight deadlines in order to ensure that the homes were ready for when the troops return home and HOPEFlow has played a major role in being able to meet this demand due to its fast pouring time. This simply wouldn’t be possible without it.” Contact T +44 (0)207 647 6220 enquiries@hopeconstructionmaterials.com www.hopeconstructionmaterials.com

Advanced Protection for Magna Carta One of the most famous historical documents in Britain, if not the western world, is being protected by extinguishing and fire alarm panels from Advanced with installation by Reflex Systems. Sealed by King John at Runnymede in 1215, Magna Carta is celebrating its 800th anniversary (the actual anniversary is 15 June). It is the first example of an absolute monarch surrendering some of his powers, the beginning of a process that led eventually to our current system of government and the prototype for democratic government all over the world. The version protected by Advanced is particularly precious being one of only four surviving original 1215 Magna Carta sealed by King John and is kept in a special vault at Lincoln Castle, itself a Scheduled Monument; alongside Magna Carta’s sister document The Charter of the Forest (1217). Lincoln Castle, one of the best preserved in England was constructed in the 11th Century by William the Conqueror, and is one of only two to have two mottes. The
fire and suppression systems installed by long-time Advanced partner Reflex Systems incorporate two MxPro 5 panels in the main heritage centre and the former Victorian prison building, which closed in 1878. Advanced’s ultra-dependable ExGo extinguishant release system has been installed in the Magna Carta vault. ExGo has been developed specifically for sensitive and strategic assets such as server rooms, historic and cultural attractions and control rooms. It has been installed in highprofile buildings across the globe, including the Romanian National Library and along oil pipelines in Sudan. www.advancedco.com
Advanced Panels protect the Eighth Wonder of the World Hagia Sofia, built in Constantinople almost 1,500 years ago and a landmark of global importance has been protected with an Advanced fire system. Built on the orders of Eastern Roman Emperor Justinian in 537, it was the world’s largest cathedral and a cornerstone of Christianity for nearly 1,000 years, became one of its most important mosques for almost 500 years and is now a world famous museum and a crown jewel in the history and skyline of Istanbul. As far back as the 6th Century it was called ‘the eighth wonder of the world.’ It welcomes millions of visitors every year and became Turkey’s most visited tourist attraction in 2012. A recent upgrade to its fire system, installed by Advanced partner, D Sistem, saw an Advanced MxPro 4 fire system installed, supporting optical smoke and air sampling detection, and a range of input and output devices.

Part of this refurbishment included creating a bright, modern identity to the courtyard garden and carpark. Located near Sadler’s Well Theatre, and overlooked by most of the offices in the refurbished building, the brief was to create a visually interesting and distinctive break area and vista for staff, as well as an area that would complement the design led architectural building. The Solution Marshalls supplied a range of street furniture products and paving to this project. The side-road leading into the courtyard area is flanked by 12 Geo bollards, four of these have added illumination. The main courtyard area itself is lit by an array of three symmetrical Parklight lanterns. The light from their 150W ceramic metal halide lamps, hidden inside the top of each column and bounced back from upper reflectors, creates a soft, uniform lighting effect
within the entire space – while avoiding discomfort glare when viewed from surrounding offices. The area has a number of attractive shrubs and trees in white planters, accompanied by a number of Geo products in stainless steel and aluminium. The new occupiers of the building have a policy of encouraging staff to cycle to work, so the courtyard is also equipped with 10 Geo Hoop cycle stands. Using the Geo range has created a unified area both pleasant and inspiring to look at, ambiently lit and including appropriate facilities to encourage cycling to work. The use of Marshalls Saxon paving in Charcoal perfectly complements the surrounding buildings as well as the timber that is a central feature to the

space. Marshalls Saxon Textured Flag Paving is blended with a hard Yorkstone aggregate to deliver a unique surface finish; the consistency of the textured surface ensures superb durability and non-slip properties. The Result The design and use of products on this project has created a well-lit, elegant, functional and aesthetically pleasing area with a bright modern identity and appropriate cycle facilities that was fully let before completion at an excellent rent. generators from NRMM charges Midas, leading generator suppliers to the construction industry, has announced its intention to supply a unique new green biofuel, Green D+ which when used in older diesel generators, will reduce emissions to a level where equipment becomes exempt from the new Government non-road mobile machinery (NRMM) charges. From 1 September 2015, NRMM of net power between 37kW and 560kW being used on construction sites in London will be required to meet certain criteria based upon engine emissions standards set in EU Directive 97/68/EC. If vehicles or equipment do not comply with the relevant emissions standard, charges will be levied. This means any diesel generators manufactured before 2006 and those bought between 2006 and 2013 will need to be verified. The innovative Green D+ is a renewable diesel containing a patented British cerium oxide nano technology based performance additive, which: 1. Changes the way fuel burns to deliver
more useful work with every piston stroke, translating into improved fuel economy 2. Reduces combustion temperature resulting in less nitrous oxide production in the engine chamber 3. Provides more efficient oxidation in the chamber thereby further reducing particulate, total hydro carbon, and CO emissions 4. Attracts oxygen from nitrous oxide in the exhaust gases thereby further reducing nitrous oxide emissions. T +44 (0)333 772 0772 info@midas-uk.co.uk www.midas-uk.co.uk

High insulation level, high strength, high build speed but low cost, low skill levels with no drama. Polarwall is an Insulating Concrete Formwork (ICF) construction system that is totally different to any other ICF system. Polarwall is the only ICF that has no dimensional modularity – so the formwork fits to the design rather than the architect fits his design around the modules and the builder has to build to the module! With Polarwall you design what you want and the builder creates it!
