Building & Construction Review UK Two Hauraton surface drainage Made in Britain: Panasonic systems installed at Maltby introduces new tanks Academy School, Rotherham Panasonic has introduced a new line of tanks to its Aquarea range. Designed and manufactured within the UK, the new cylinders vary in capacity from 180-litres to 400-litres and offer some of the best standing losses on the market, ensuring that energy losses are minimal.
The Maltby Academy School to the East of Rotherham, just off the A631, was established in the 1930s with additional building added in the 1960s and at the start of this century. The school has expanded and now offers up to 1,200 student places with an age range of between 11 and 19 years. Early in 2012, it was decided refurbish the older building and build a new open plan business/enterprise centre and sport science block. In addition, the old gymnasium was to be converted into a performing and creative arts facility. The £10.9 million contract for the redevelopment of Maltby Academy was awarded to BAM Construction of Leeds, in June 2012. The site was fully operational by September 2013, the start of the academic year, with full completion shortly afterwards. Architects for the new buildings were Bond Bryan, Sheffield office. With the site being quite flat, and the old and new buildings’ surrounded by paved and asphalted surfaces, it was essential rainwater is drained effectively. Two Hauraton systems were chosen to drain surface water: RECYFIX® PRO and RECYFIX® SLOTTED channels. A Hauraton RECYFIX® PRO 100 channel system, fitted with FIBRETEC® C250, HEELSAFE 9mm slot gratings, was used to drain the asphalted yards and car park. Since its launched in February 2010, the RECYFIX PRO surface water drainage channel, featuring the innovative FIBRETEC® grating, has been specified and successfully installed in numerous United Kingdom drainage projects, including rail station
platforms, public squares, shopping malls, sports-fields, tartan running tracks and many other commercial and private applications. The material PA-GF, used to make the FIBRETEC® grating, was especially developed by Hauraton; the tough, UV resistant, fibre reinforced moulding offers high stability and huge strength for its weight. Complying with loading category Class C250 (BSEN 1433) the grating can easily take the weight of commercial delivery vehicles. The design is a real innovation as its non-corrosive material provides a visually appealing surface finish that retains its black colour. The FIBRETEC® C250 HEELSAFE grating was specifically designed by Hauraton R & D engineers to enhance the flow of water into the channel. The slots are super smooth, elliptical openings with the moulded bars having slightly raised triangular bosses along their outside edges. As well as providing an elegant appearance, the feature ensures surface water is directed into the slots. Contact T +44 (0)1582 501380 sales@hauraton.co.uk www.drainage-projects.co.uk

Panasonic’s new tanks have been specially designed to avoid pressure loss whilst simultaneously maximising the heat exchange surface area. This is achieved by incorporating a multi-pass corrugated stainless steel tube into the unit. The corrugated tubing provides a 20% faster recovery time than the tanks featuring plain tubing. The cylinders are solar ready with a twin coil fitted to improve their efficiency further.

The ins and outs of a revolving door The chances are as a pedestrian and a building user, you’ve been through a few revolving doors in your lifetime. The revolving door is a common sight amongst larger commercial buildings and in many places where there is a high foot fall. The revolving door, usually consists of three or four doors known as wings which are spaced at an eqi-distance from each other around a central shaft. These wings rotate in a circle inside of a cylinder. The size of the cylinder can vary from small, allowing for just enough space for a single user to a larger size which allows enough room for several people, pushchairs or luggage to fit in. It is a well-established fact that the revolving door holds many advantages over the more traditional hinged door. Not only are revolving doors more energy efficient than regular doors but they help to keep the cost of heating
enter and exit buildings at a quicker rate. A high frequency mobility hotspot can benefit greatly through the installation of a revolving door as it allows for people to enter and exit a building at the same time without any collisions. A more traditional door results in one person to wait whilst another passes through.
and cooling to a minimum. When the users of manual doors open a regular door a large amount of air can escape the building. The installation of a revolving door can help to eliminate this and the amount of air that escapes whilst the door wings of a revolving door circulates is minimal. In this way, drafts are reduced and your lobby area is kept at a comfortable temperature. Another key feature of the revolving door is that they allow more people to
The ever changing business world has seen traditional 9-5 working days being replaced with a twenty-four seven culture. With this, a new view on building security is required as it becomes increasingly difficult to keep track of who is in the building, where and when. Using new technologies and premium materials, Boon Edam has developed the Speedlane Lifeline Series, an innovative and highly customisable security barrier for access control and security solutions. As the name ‘Lifeline’ indicates, the product is alive and living. A sophisticated entry management system, the Speedlane Lifeline Series is designed to be intuitive, interacting
with all who approach it and guiding visitors through a secure gateway to their final destination. The Lifeline product range, which includes the slimmest security barrier in the industry, consists of three models, the Slide, Swing and Open, each of which are available in a variety of options. Whether it’s for a higher security level or disabled

Architects often opt for a revolving door to assist with the soundproofing of a lobby area. When in use, a revolving door will help keep out unwanted street noise and will eliminate the sound of slamming doors. They are also the preferred method of entry solution especially within a more confined space as a revolving door will often make a building seem much larger and more majestic in appearance.

Product Innovation Award
Making the most of mineral resources Building and Construction Review is proud to present its Product Innovation 2015 profile to Francis Flower. With over 50 years’ experience in milling, grinding, blending and storage of fine mineral powders, Francis Flower has established itself as a leading provider of specialised mineral materials and services for a range of industrial sectors. The company recovers, reclaims and recycles material from industry for the benefit of its customers and the environment. Francis Flower is the owner of the innovative UK market leading brand, Gypsol. Manufactured in the UK, Gypsol acts as an exceptional alternative to sand/cement screeds and polished concrete. At the forefront of liquid screed development and innovation, the Gypsol brand has grown significantly since its creation three years ago and has gained the majority of the market. It is made mainly from a recycled material and makes for the perfect supplement to underfloor heating.
Paul Pepper, Managing Director at Francis Flower receiving the prestigious 60 Years of Excellence Award
operate 24 hours a day, Francis Flower is in a unique and unequalled position to supply the needs of customers. Gypsol is also CE certified so that you can be assured that the product meets the stringent quality standards you would expect within your project.
“The Gypsol product is a highly useful, innovative creation,” commented Paul Pepper, Managing Director of Francis Flower. “Since introducing the product three years ago we have received a fantastic amount of interest and sales have soared. We provide the basis for our customers to produce a high quality floor screed and we create the demand in the market for them to sell into.
Francis Flower has a range of innovative systems to help you create your floor screed including the new Gypsol Diamond polished screed. The unique and innovative ‘micro concrete’ incorporates specially selected fine aggregates as well as the high quality Gypsol anhydrite binder. It has been designed in response to the specific requirements of Midland Flooring Ltd for use in their exclusive Micro Polish anhydrite floor system. This system offers the performance and functionality of a high quality product whilst offering the beauty and durability of a polished concrete style floor.
“Whether you are an architect, main contractor, self-builder or a flooring contractor, we offer the best advice so you have all the information necessary to maximise the benefit of Gypsol in your project.” The high calibre anhydrite free-flowing floor screed binder is manufactured from the waste material of the acid production and chemical industries to exacting standards to BS: EN:13454. As the only company in the UK with its own production facilities for Gypsol which
Gypsol Diamond is perfectly suited to the encapsulation of an underfloor heating system. As no subsequent floor coverings are required, the time from installation to finished floor is significantly reduced compared to more traditional flooring systems. Gypsol Diamond also offers optimal thermal performance and response leading to maximum energy efficiency when compared with other systems in the market place.
Francis Flower has recently announced the acquisition of the Scunthorpe Ground Granulated Blastfurnace Slag (GGBS) facility from Hanson Cement. GGBS is environmentally friendly low CO2 cement produced from a by-product of the steel industry. The business is capable of producing more than half a million tonnes of GGBS every year and supplies customers in the Midlands and North of England. GGBS complements Francis Flower’s existing range of high quality powdered minerals, which originate as by-products from various industries reducing the need for mineral extraction and landfill delivering sustainable environmental solutions for its customers. The acquisition reflects both Francis Flower’s commitment to developing its range of products and services in this sector and the credibility it has for making the most of mineral resources.
to provide a whole house heating solution by combining existing technologies and the Gypsol based flowing anhydrite floor screeds. The process involves incorporating Gypsol screed in separating floors in order to maximise desirability, asset value and useable space.
When asked about the company’s plans for the future, Paul concluded, “We create the highest quality products and systems to help your company create the best products possible. We do everything we can to help your company strive.
“This system enables the screed to go on the first floor on timber floors, (subject to structural design) ensuring homeowners encapsulate underfloor heating effectively,” Paul explained. “As a sustainable alternative to radiators, the Solida System improves a house builder’s green credentials massively as it reduces energy use. We now have a number of customers using the Solida System, including the renowned timber frame manufacturers Oakworth Homes.”
“Our future aim is to continue to develop more innovative products and work on our systems to further improve thermal conductivity. We also have other exciting products and systems we are working on that are set to be launched next year.” Francis Flower produces a quarterly newspaper ‘The Gypsol Chronicles,’ where it showcases its products and services to the public and explains how Gypsol can be used to your advantage. Building Excellence
Providing support to the Portable Sanitation Industry Building and Construction Review is pleased to present Plastic Solutions (Aldridge) Limited with its highly prestigious Commitment to Excellence profile. The company, an established provider of plastic, portable toilets & urinals and effluent tanks utilised in multiple industry sectors, was originally founded in 2010 by the current Owner and Directors Roy and Christian Heritage. Over 60 years of experience in the sanitation industry within the management team alone emphasises the unparalleled credibility of Plastic Solutions, a brand that has worked strategically to develop a line of niche products that will benefit operators in the portable toilet industry and associated markets. “Our initial aim was to find a better alternative to the heavy steel waste tanks typically deployed by the cabin hire industry for the collection of liquid waste from site toilets
and welfare facilities,” commented Jon Trelfa, General Manager at Plastic Solutions. “Large steel tanks are weighty, hard to transport and susceptible to rust, so we chose to incorporate plastic instead – a material that is lightweight, readily portable, easier to clean, has an improved aesthetic appearance and is more ecologically friendly.” Plastic Solutions provides single, portable toilets, portable urinals and associated complementary accessories (such as automatic PIR lights for toilet units, large sink units, saddle tanks for fresh water storage on trucks and toilet movers). Particularly notable innovations include the Tuff Tank, a 500 gallon plastic holding tank, and its smaller counterpart, the Mini Tuff Tank – weighing just 45kgs, this version is typically favoured for its flexibility in collecting waste or transporting fresh water.
As an international leader in entry solutions, Netherlands-based Royal Boon Edam International BV has dominated the industry for over 140 years. The family owned business initially began as a carpenter’s shop in Holland, but the rapid progression and soaring success that ensued transformed the humble establishment into a globallyrenowned mobility hotspot authority.
“We are the largest revolving door company in the world,” says enthused Boon Edam’s National Sales Manager, Andrew Hamilton. “As specialists we boast the largest portfolio and therefore find ourselves in a unique position within the marketplace. We have a number of competitors, but they are unable to do what we can on a collective level. “Everything here is done internally, so we have a greater control over operations. We don’t use any external contractors; we cover all processes (the manufacture, design, supply, service and warranty) in-house. Our well established team of engineers, project managers and sales staff are extremely technical and make it their priority to understand clients’ key requirements – we don’t just provide standard items, we create products suitable for individual applications.” Boon Edam’s product range can be split into two categories: revolving doors and low level & high level security products (in the form of security doors & portals, speed gates, tripod turnstiles, full height turnstiles, barriers and access gates). Its services extend to
The Walsall-based supplier specialises in the provision of innovative and economical solutions suitable for liquid waste disposal from toilet blocks, site welfare facilities and large public events. The equipment has proven popular with customers in cabin & container and portable toilet hire, tankered waste operation, construction, outdoor events and pleasure boat/caravan waste tipping points.
Jon provided further detail on the revolutionary Tuff Tank product, “The plastic Tuff Tank – the first (and still the best) primary product line – is

now in its third generation. It boasts some key USPs to be the clear product of choice in the construction and event industries where no mains sewer connection is available.”
When discussing future plans, Jon concluded, “We will consistently add new products to expand our range and are signing up partners for distribution channels in Europe and beyond. In 2015, we agreed to represent a niche German portable toilet manufacturer’s products, offering a cost-effective, alternative supply for portable toilets in the UK and Ireland. “With the laying on of extra production tooling and the engagement of additional admin staff, the company is well-positioned to exploit its market-leading status to grow sales through 2016 and beyond. We can more easily achieve this by continuing to operate with the excellent business ethics and strong customer service on which we pride ourselves, and by going the extra mile to help our customers.” Plastic Solutions showcases its first rate products at the PSE (UK) and EUROTOI (Germany), the main European trade events for the portable sanitation industry. The team are also excited about exhibiting at the Showman’s Show, which they are set to be attending for the first time this October. T 0800 334 5742 www.plasticsol.com

According to Andrew, one of Boon Edam’s main differentiators is its commitment to remaining ecologically mindful, “Two years ago, we attended Ecobuild to launch the NRG plus, the first revolving door that turns human energy into kinetic energy,” he explained. “The push motion (activated by individuals pressing the door) powers a light, which is an energy-saving feature in itself due to the fact it’s only visible when in use. “Not only does a revolving door lessen the carbon footprint and reduce carbon emissions from the building, it will also see a return on the customer’s investment. This shows the incredible worth of our products as well as our dedication to being environmentally aware.” For more information on the products and services available from Boon Edam Ltd, please visit: www.boonedam.co.uk Contact T +44 (0)1233 505900 contact@boonedam.co.uk www.boonedam.co.uk

“We have a number of companies now in the UK taking full advantage of the flexibility that comes with a Hundegger machine, and they can be more adventurous with designs and now they can make money on jobs that were previously loss making.” “No one makes money cutting timber; it has to be done quickly and at the lowest costs. Using a Hundegger machine is a great help in this respect.” Hundegger UK are happy to meet and discuss with all UK companies what the employment of one of their machines will mean to their business, whether it be saving money, increasing production, saving timber, all that in the end lead to higher profitability. Hauraton drainage channels used at Penarth Learning Community School The £48 million Penarth Learning Community, designed by HLM Architects has been built on the site of the St Cyres Secondary School. Pupils from St Cyres, Erw’r Delyn, Ashgrove and Ysgol Maes Dyfan special schools come together at this complex; claimed to be the largest learning facility of its type in Wales.
The RECYFIX® channel component is made from 100% recycled PE-PP. The six sizes offered are 160mm wide and range in height from 75mm to 201mm. The FIBRETEC® grating are factory fitted on all PRO units whilst the slotted components are fitted to the channels on site. Steve Wiseman, Hauraton‘s Project Engineer comments; “By using two types of channel the overall appearance of the blocked and asphalted areas was enhanced with the drainage requirement fully met.”
Penarth Learning Community School, Cardiff, South Wales, comprises a mainstream comprehensive school with 1,280 places, together with a special educational needs (SEN) school, catering for 205 pupils with a wide spectrum of learning needs including those with learning and physical difficulties and those on the autism spectrum. Together with a learning facility, there is also a 1,500m² residential homes, allowing 19 pupils to stay over at any one time to provide respite to their families.
For full Case Study, go to: www.drainage-projects.co.uk
The new complex has gained a BREEAM sustainability rating of Excellent and an Energy Performance Certificate ‘A’ rating, so it is hoped the buildings will contribute to reducing
energy use and long term costs to the Vale of Glamorgan Council. With the site being quite flat and the new buildings’ surrounded by blocked and asphalted surfaces, it was essential rainwater is drained effectively. Two Hauraton systems were chosen to drain surface water: RECYFIX® PRO and RECYFIX® SLOTTED channels. The Hauraton RECYFIX® PRO 100 channel system, fitted with FIBRETEC® C250, HEELSAFE 9mm slot gratings, was used to drain the asphalted yards and car park. Made from PA-GF, the FIBRETEC® C250 HEELSAFE grating was specifically designed by Hauraton R & D engineers to enhance the
flow of water into the channel. The slots are super smooth, elliptical openings with the moulded bars having slightly raised triangular bosses along their outside edges. As well as providing an elegant appearance, the feature ensures surface water is directed into the slots. This configuration also helps eliminate any cross-flow over the grating. Aesthetic demands meant the surface water drainage for the blocked walkways had to be as unobtrusive as possible yet fully meet the drainage requirement; this was achieved by installing Hauraton RECYFIX® STANDARD SLOTTED CHANNELS fitted with symmetrical galvanised steel covers. Once installed this system provides an unobtrusive, narrow line of slots in the paved surfaces.

hsbcad: Empowering you to realise Here at Building and Construction Review, we are pleased to announce that hsbcad has been recognised as a standout company for its continued commitment to ensuring Product Innovation. The company – which is firmly positioned in the architectural, engineering and manufacturing industry sectors – was established in 1988 by Karel Vinckier, hsbcad’s CEO. Overcoming operational obstacles (the business divested in 2014) only served to further strengthen the enterprise. The company was bought out by Illinois Tool Works Inc. in 2009 but has since been reformed to take its original structure once again. Steady growth and development Now experiencing steady growth and consistent development, hsbcad is currently in the process of hiring more personnel to handle the ever-growing industry demand. The leading 3D CAD/CAM software solution provider for the offsite construction industry operates globally and enjoys a solid reputation in the market for its innovative software solutions. With its main headquarters in Belgium, the company also has operations in seven countries across Europe, North and South America and Japan in order to better serve its customer base.
The well-respected brand is known for developing applications for Autodesk’s AutoCAD® and Revit® platforms to enable a smooth transition from the initial architectural design right through to final production. Its sophisticated suite of products offers its clients (typically architects, engineers and manufacturers in the offsite construction and prefabrication industry) the ability to create a scalable 3D manufacturing model with full quantity take-off. Interfacing with the market’s leading CNC machinery, it’s fully adjustable software can be adapted to fit individual specifications. Advantages over competitors “hsbcad is based on AutoCAD Architecture’s intelligent 3D-Model, providing the benefit of
market standard design process/workflow from architectural design to production design without any loss of data or information,” explains Alberto Jena, hsbcad’s Managing Director UK. “Dynamic parametric tools allow changes to the model, presenting the user the correct result in real-time to allow accurate decisionmaking for machining (what you see in the 3D model is what you get on the machine). Everything takes place in one 3D environment – there’s no difference between 2D and 3D – and plans change dynamically in 2D or 3D, allowing the user to adapt the model as necessary. hsbcad software is completely customisable, providing the user with improved efficiency through custommade solutions. “In addition, BIM compliance (through enhanced IFC Export support) allows the information flow from the model to be shared further afield. And, as the hsbcad file format is DWG, easy access is provided to the standard CAD-file format and AutoCAD knowledge and experience worldwide. Another one of our key advantages over companies providing similar services is that we have an international presence – as we are spread across the continents, we can provide high-quality service with our CNC partners and our innovative background with Autodesk (e.g. Cloud Technology) – all of these essential attributes give us an increasing edge over our competitors.”
depth: “hsbcad is our core solution, and will be so for the foreseeable future,” he comments. “Our customers can expect continuous enhancements that will reflect their feedback to us over the past few years. Autodesk, the market leader in design solutions, has introduced Revit, an exciting platform that is gaining popularity among the design fraternity. They are also placing great emphasis on cloud technologies as their digital future. “hsbcad is meeting these demands head on by providing solutions through hsblabs, our innovation division. The latest solution is ‘hsbmodel’, a 3D Printing app for printing models from Revit and can be downloaded free now. You’ll be seeing early versions of our flagship framing solution in Revit later this year.”

Product Innovation Award
For the world at your feet Building and Construction Review is proud to present Flowcrete with its Product Innovation Award profile. Flowcrete is a world leader in the manufacture of seamless resin flooring systems and self-levelling floor screed treatments for the industrial flooring and commercial flooring sectors. At the forefront of resin flooring technology for over 30 years, Flowcrete supplies innovative, fit-for-purpose solutions that transform floors into fully optimised assets that actively enhance a site’s aesthetics, safety, sustainability and cleanliness levels. These superior systems have been designed to optimise the floor area within a long list of working environments. Robust industrial solutions are available that have been purpose built to withstand the worst abuses of industrial environments, including chemical attack, physical impacts, continuous wear and thermal shock. Commercial venues can make use of floors that combine this durability with a high aesthetic value and specialist systems can also be provided for sites that require floors with enhanced performance credentials to meet specific construction or on-site demands. It all began in 1982 when British inventor Peter Gibbins was tasked by a large, well known confectioner to develop a special type of floor that wouldn’t erode when exposed to significant quantities of sugar – a problem that the global confectionary company encountered quite frequently. His success in creating a resin flooring solution that was ideally suited to withstanding the rigorous challenges of the client’s manufacturing facilities led to the formation of Flowcrete. With sales offices in over six continents and manufacturing centres across Europe, the Americas, Asia and Africa, Flowcrete aims to serve clients in their local markets by innovatively transforming environments at ground-level. “We have a fresh approach to flooring and are constantly looking
8
to introduce world-class flooring systems that offer a number of performance advantages while at the same time making floors so much more than something to walk over,” commented Kevin Potter, Flowcrete UK’s Managing Director. “We are dedicated to producing environmentally friendly flooring materials and using our planet’s resources responsibly across all of our operations to ensure a greener, more sustainable world at our feet.” One of Flowcrete’s key systems that stands out from competitors is the Flowfresh range. Created out of an exclusive global partnership with the antimicrobial agent manufacturer Polygiene®, the silverion based Polygiene® additive is homogenously distributed throughout the Flowfresh system, empowering it with the ability to eliminate 99.9% of bacteria that comes into contact with the floor. This ability has been proven to meet the ISO 22196 standard. The Flowfresh range has also recently been accredited with HACCP International Certification thanks to its ability to provide an ultra-hygienic floor finish for the food and beverage industry that minimises the risk of contamination incidents. The latest product in the ever growing range is the Isocrete Alpha Screed, which has been designed with the performance and construction practicalities of high-rise residential developments in mind. This screed
also meets the contemporary desire for sustainable construction, as 95% of the alpha hemihydrate calcium sulphate binder used in the Isocrete Alpha Screed is reclaimed from waste created by coal power stations to reduce the amount of industrial by-product sent to landfills. This cement free formulation also avoids the environmentally harmful side effects of producing and using cement. Kevin explained, “Generally we try to present our products to either flooring contractors or anyone involved in the flooring specification process for new build or refurbishment projects, which can include architects, facilities managers, procurement specialists, etc. “There aren’t many market sectors that we don’t try to promote ourselves within – if it can be classified as large-scale commercial or industrial then chances are that we’ll have an applicable flooring solution.” “We are increasingly exploring collaborative growth plans with other subsidiaries of our parent company, RPM International Inc.” continued Kevin. “Many of these companies, such as Euclid, Tremco and Carboline offer complementary construction materials so we can utilise each other’s expertise in different markets and areas of the world to help crosspromote our products. “Flowcrete won an award from RPM last year thanks to our willingness and effectiveness at embracing this collaborative business model.”

SWA has launched a new range of innovative Firefly fire safety clips These fully meet the requirements of the BS7671:2015 Wiring Regulations to secure all surface cables in escape routes, preventing fire-fighters and people escaping burning buildings from becoming entangled. The regulations, which came into effect from July 2015, prohibit non-metallic clips or plastic trunking as the sole means of support. The SWA Firefly range builds on the success of its stainless steel cable ties and the recently launched FSC2 steel fire safety clips. Both FSC2 and Firefly clips are approved to BS5839-1 and allow easy fixing through plastic trunking. FSC2 clips are specifically intended for 25mm x 16mm trunking. The Firefly clips have been specially developed with a new, flexible design to make them suitable for all popular sizes of plastic trunking. Firefly clips feature rounded ends, preventing damage to cables and injury to electricians. What’s more, their spring-loaded design makes
Nationwide Platforms introduces ‘Intelligent Secondary Guarding’ innovation Nationwide Platforms has become the first access hire company to develop and introduce a secondary guarding system designed to prevent a trapping or crushing incident before a collision can occur. SkySiren® PCS™ (Pre-Crush Sensing) represents a major step forward in powered access safety. It automatically stops a mobile elevating working platform (MEWP) boom before the operator comes into collision with an object that could lead to a trap or crush incident. The system is the first in the UK to offer a double protection barrier against trapping and crushing incidents, creating a new level of guarding, which its designers have called ‘Intelligent Secondary Guarding.’
it straightforward to add or remove cables in the months and years after installation. The full range will include a variety of clips to secure cables both inside and outside trunking and conduits. With more designs and styles being added each month, SWA’s Firefly range is set be the largest and most comprehensive range of fire safety fixings within our industry. SkySiren® PCS™ combines Nationwide Platforms’ pioneering SkySiren® secondary guarding device with a new system called Pre-Crush Sensing, which uses ultrasound sensors to detect objects that present a trapping or crushing hazard for the operator. As well as preventing trap and crush collisions before they can happen, the system has other key benefits. It warns operators about potential hazards, so they are more alert in high risk areas. Trapping and crushing incidents remain one of the major causes of serious injuries and fatalities involving MEWPs. Nationwide Platforms was the first to respond to industry concerns with the launch of the original SkySiren® in 2011. Its pressure sensor bar, located
across the MEWP controls, stops the machine if an operator’s body is pushed against it during a potential entrapment incident. Following a threeyear development programme, BlueSky Solutions, part of Lavendon Group, is now adding a new level of protection with SkySiren® PCS™. The PCS™ system has eight ultrasonic sensors located behind and in front of the operator on the boom platform. These generate high frequency sound waves around the MEWP operator.
way that risks entrapment, the SkySiren® pressure sensor bar located across the control panel continues to protect the operator by stopping the MEWP. It then raises the alarm with a strobe light and a klaxon.
When the platform moves to within a defined distance of an object, the sensors detect the sound waves that are reflected back from it. This triggers a signal to stop the MEWP.
SkySiren® PCS™ incorporates the latest version of SkySiren®, which for the first time can be integrated with the SkySentry™ authorised access and data reporting system.
To start the machine again, and move towards the working position, the operator simply resets the safety foot pedal. While moving within the ‘sensing zone’ around the object, the operator is continuously alerted by a flashing red light, and a personal alarm.
This gives MEWP Managers and Operators new opportunities to respond effectively to risks, and target measures to improve processes and training.
If, subsequently, the platform is operated in a
Lack of European Grade A space causes Grade C Fire and Lighting Safety Research from Hochiki Europe reveals over half (56%) of European businesses are risking the safety of building occupants by failing to adjust security systems in accordance with change in use of space. With demand for Grade A office space outstripping supply in many major cities, organisations are investing in fit-outs and refurbishments to accommodate evolving needs but neglecting to alter fire and lighting safety systems to support this. Carried out by the leading designer and manufacturer of life safety systems, the study of installers also found that 55% feel their customers are more concerned with initial expenditure than Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) which could compromise performance long-term. Simon Massey, Section Leader Technical Support/Training at Hochiki Europe, explained, “While the construction industry works to meet a surge in demand for Grade A space in European cities such as London and Milan, businesses are understandably working with what they’ve got to accommodate their growth.
10
“However, fire and lighting safety solutions are installed with the current use of space in mind so to disregard this when altering layout or function is a potentially fatal oversight.” The study also highlighted maintenance spends as an area for concern. A fifth (22%) of installers surveyed think Building Managers view maintenance as an unnecessary expense. While almost three quarters (74%) believe that they view maintenance as simply a ‘tick-box’ exercise. Massey commented, “With European GDP set to rise by 1.7% this year alone, it’s likely that many businesses will be forced to continue adapting with what they have but this shouldn’t be to the detriment of overall safety.” To combat the issues highlighted in the survey, Hochiki Europe has created guides to simplify emergency lighting and fire safety installation and maintenance. Skanska specifies Cygnus Wireless Alarm System for New City Building Claire McCormack, Health & Safety Manager at Skanska has been delighted with the performance of the system, “We found Cygnus to be a very good system, providing not just alarms but first aid points as well. If an operator, say on level seven, hits the first aid button then we know exactly where to send help. Also, if for instance a crane driver is unwell, then that person too can hit an emergency button to raise the alarm.” Intended purely for use on construction sites, the CE marked Cygnus system has been specifically designed for use in dense concrete and steel structured
buildings and areas where there are many other radio frequencies in operation, and so particular attention has been given to achieving an impressive connection range. Where there are multiple sites within range of each other, the Cygnus system has been designed to operate on different site addresses in order to keep each system separate and free from interference. A major feature of the Cygnus system is the
optional control panel which provides a very sophisticated capability with an event log function which records any events such as alarm activation, low battery warning, and signal faults, all of which can be viewed if necessary in the history folder held on the panel. Each unit in the system can provide the panel with information at regular intervals. This explicit information confirms the unit is still present and what the battery status of each device is. Known as the ‘heart beat’ this message is monitored by the control panel where fitted and if the ‘heart beat’ is not heard for several intervals, the control panel logs a full status for that unit. Further information on the Cygnus wireless alarm system is available from Bull Products on: +44 (0)844 669 1111, by emailing: info@bullproducts.co.uk or by visiting the company’s website at: www.bullproducts.co.uk

Sundolitt XPS – Helps provide a Warm Road to recovery at Police Treatment Centre Sundolitt XPS, extreme strength, extruded polystyrene is helping provide high insulation levels, strength and rigidity to a new swimming pool which will play an important role in the rehabilitation of injured and sick police officers from Northern England, Scotland and Northern Ireland. The pool installation, at Castlebrae Police Treatment Centre in Auchterarder, Perthshire, is part of a £2.5 million redevelopment to improve and extend facilities to accommodate the needs of some 1,650 serving and retired police officers who use the centre each year. The work includes the new – much larger – pool alongside a new hydrotherapy pool and a larger fitness and exercise hall with a purpose-built spin bike studio. The XPS has been supplied in varying dimensions to accommodate the sloping design of the pool and is an important sub-structure prior to the pouring of the concrete base and tile finish. The pool contractor, John Preston Pool and Spa, says that the Sundolitt XPS allows speed and simplicity of installation with minimal on-site preparation as well as guaranteeing high insulation performance which will help keep energy costs down at the centre – a crucial factor as 85% of running costs have to come from police donations. The project is due to be completed by spring next year and is being funded by the registered charity “The Police Treatment Centres” which runs Castlebrae. Deputy Chief Executive and Centre Manager, Paul Grant said, “Every 27 minutes, a police officer is assaulted on the street. They come to us for help and support – most with the intention of wanting to get back on the front line. The refurbishment of Castlebrae’s treatment pool is vital to many patients’ rehabilitation.” Sundolitt XPS has already proved ideal in industrial floors such as cold stores and chilled warehouses where high insulation, high strength attributes are critical but, in this application, it is helping keep water temperature up and the running costs down as well as providing rigid support and protection against differential heave for the pool. “XPS is now a preferred solution for a wide range of applications where extreme

strength is needed combined with high insulation properties. This includes solid flooring and foundations, inverted roofing and for insulating railway lines, airports and roads wherever heavy loads and high moisture levels are encountered” said Bryan Mawer Sundolitt’s Sales Manager Construction Products and their specialist in XPS. Sundolitt XPS is manufactured in a wide range of thicknesses and sheet sizes – the primary range has a thermal conductivity of 0.033 – 0.037W/mK (EN 13164). According to the type of use, it achieves outstanding compression resistance from 200 – 700 kPa (EN826) and offers exceptionally low moisture absorption through its closed-pore system – making it an ideal thermal insulator for a wide range of commercial and domestic construction applications.

“Our XPS is unaffected by rain, snow or frost and can be stored outside. We also make it available in square or shiplap edge – the latter having the advantage of preventing thermal bridging should the XPS board’s part slightly during installation,” said Mr Mawer. Sundolitt XPS can also make a major contribution to the UK’s carbon reduction programmes. It is made without using environmentally harmful gases and is fully recyclable if recovered at end-of-life. And with the built-environment accounting for 40% of Europe’s energy consumption, the greater energy efficiency that comes from using Sundolitt XPS can, in some cases, reduce total energy consumption in buildings and structures by 75%. On any given week there can be more than 60 officers resident at the Castlebrae Centre and the new development will help overcome the limitations on class size imposed by the older facilities as well as allowing for the increasing demand for rest, recuperation and professional help in getting back to good health. “We’re pleased to be playing a small part in such an important project,” said Sundolitt’s Bryan Mawer. “One thing is for sure, XPS

Hyster reveals 5 reliability checks for ICE forklift users Reliability is one of the most important factors when choosing a forklift truck, but reliability can only be measured in relation to the intended use. So before ‘popping the hood,’ be clear about how you want to use the truck. Here are five checks to help determine if an ICE powered truck is reliable enough for your application, whether handling timber, metal, paper or a simple pallet of fruit. 1) Engine and transmission A truck’s engine and transmission will determine whether it starts on a cold winter’s morning or won’t overheat on the hottest summer days. For single shift, standard duty applications with lifts that are not at capacity, most industrial engines will usually provide a reliable performance, but always check if the engine is a known brand and designed for industrial applications.

Innovations in rooftop parking
2) Hydraulics A common reliability problem in the forklift industry is leaking hydraulic fluid, so it’s important to understand the quality of the hoses, fittings, valves and pumps used. Are they fit for purpose on a site like yours? If there is any doubt, investigate further.
3) Testing, quality and warranty Check that the product has gone through thorough testing and life-cycle simulation, verifying the reliability of the entire truck design. Have there been credible testing, analysis and refinements on how all the elements work together, such as engine efficiency, noise and vibration, all weather performance, stability, safety, hydraulic and transmission performance, axles, cooling, software and more? Does it meet the safety standards? 4) Check reference sites Is the truck brand you’re considering reliable in real life applications? A little bit of research could save you years of contractual difficulties, downtime and out of contract costs. Trusted suppliers will be able to give you references and proof. 5) Maintaining reliability The good news is that most reputable brands build forklifts to be reliable in the application they were designed for, but they do need to be maintained properly. Check that the supplier can support the equipment adequately and at the right price. For more guidance on reliability from a highly experienced, application focused team, visit: www.hyster.eu
The new Pardak® 110 system has been installed on the roof of another Westfield scheme – the Broadway in Bradford, opening later this year. In 1987, Netherlands based manufacturer Zoontjens launched Pardak®, an innovative decking system for roofs accommodating intensive passenger car traffic and parking, based on tensioned precast concrete slab technology. Almost 2 million square metres have now been installed around Europe – and development continues with new ranges to meet the latest demands. Rooftop parking is an increasingly popular design choice, making good use of wasted, high-level areas and freeing up much-needed open space on the ground for more attractive and appealing uses, adding value to our cities. But the technical challenges are complex, demanding dedicated expertise and a holistic, systematic approach. The Pardak® system can be used on most roof build-ups including warm, un-insulated and inverted roofs where it sits directly on the insulation so eliminating any cold bridging. It uses dry, prefabricated construction techniques for fast, safe installation, unaffected by most weather conditions – which can be speeded up even more using mechanized techniques such as vacuum-lifting machines. The system consists of high quality, vacuum-formed concrete slabs supported on pressure distributor pads with adjustable tensioning elements. Each slab is profiled on the sides with drainage slots and supplied as standard with a raised diamond pattern. A reinforced version is also available to accommodate emergency vehicle access. Meeting SuDS requirements The regular pattern of surface grooves in the slabs and the pre-formed slots between installed slabs allow water to move rapidly off the surface without the need for falls, into the void below. Here, water runoff can be attenuated before discharge, as part of a SUDS strategy to meet the latest planning requirements for sustainable drainage introduced earlier this year in England. The surface remains free of water
London’s Olympic Park – where around 15,000m2 of the well-established Pardak® 90 were installed. But the recently developed Pardak® 110 range, replacing Pardak® 90, takes these principles further with improvements to accommodate today’s increasing trafficking levels and heavier cars including SUVs.
Around 15,000m2 of Pardak® rooftop car park paving is in use at Westfield Stratford City – Europe’s largest urban shopping centre. – and ice in cold weather – making it safe for both vehicles and pedestrians. The void below can also accommodate service cables with straightforward access when needed. The paving system protects the waterproofing membrane from UV, structural and other damage, while keeping it accessible, as individual slabs can be removed easily. In fact, the whole system can be rapidly dismantled and re-used where needed.
The main changes are considerably more effective tensioning elements, plastic corner pieces enabling accurate slab height levelling and increased slab sizes to a 1,100mm x 1,100mm grid. Pardak® 110 also gives substantially lower sound generation values, for example from shopping trolleys, due to a more intensive horizontal and vertical tensioning of the new system. Its capabilities will be demonstrated at another Westfield scheme opening later this year – the Broadway in Bradford – the fourth largest shopping centre in the UK and the first to use Pardak® 110, where some 13,000m2 have been installed.
Pressure distributors at the corners of slabs absorb and distribute vertical and horizontal forces that occur when a vehicle passes over the parking surface and also reduce contact noise of the vehicle tyres. Then, bolts in the tensioning element are simply adjusted to close the slabs up, creating an integrated, homogeneous surface. Here, vertical, as well as horizontal forces exerted by vehicles braking, decelerating and turning, are distributed between several slabs. The adjustable tensioning elements compensate for differential movement of the slabs, because of their self-regulating action.
Zoontjens is also turning its attention to renovation and refurbishment projects, and lightly trafficked roofs such as office blocks and car dealerships. Here, the smaller and lighter Pardak® 80 systems impose lower loads on the roof structure but has been designed to cater for the increased weights and dynamic power of today’s cars. The prefabricated and tensionedslab paving system can also be installed quickly to minimise ‘down-time’ – particularly when machine-laid – while rejuvenating older damaged roofs. Finally, a growing demand for rooftop paving that can handle heavy goods vehicles has led to the development of Pardak® XL, a driving surface consisting of 2 x 2 metre concrete slabs able to support 16 tonnes.
New Product Ranges Recent examples of this impressive system include Westfield Stratford City – the largest urban shopping centre in Europe and the gateway to

KAR UK: Leading leading wholesaler of irrigation equipment KAR UK Ltd is the UK’s number one wholesaler for irrigation equipment and distributor for Hunter Industries Corporation. It’s been surprising this year to see how many significantly priced landscape projects have gone ahead without prior consideration as to how the plants are to survive during the summer months without water, resulting in the plants dying and subsequently money going down the drain. It goes without saying early stages of plantation need regular watering. Is an irrigation system deemed to be just a fancy luxury or an integral part of any landscape feature? A well thought out and carefully designed system, preferably before the project starts, is an investment that could last well over 15 years and if installed correctly, your client would not even know it was there.
Regal, a trade exclusive product, is the number one artificial grass for landscapers. With a realistic olive green and tan thatch appearance, luxurious 32mm pile height and a gross weight of 2.8kg per square metre Regal is a non-infill grass that delivers on specification and meets those all-important margins.
Trulawn Trade supply grasses suitable for all sorts of projects. Trulawn Supreme was launched in 2014 and became an instant bestseller due to its 37mm pile height and lush feel, whilst our flagship product Trulawn Luxury is consistently chosen for its realistic dense texture. Full rolls or exact cut lengths can be provided with no cutting charge and are available in 2m or 4m widths. All of our products are sold with the other required products for installation available and can be delivered to commercial and domestic properties nationwide.

Garden designers… Who needs them? The process of designing a garden is often as individual as the client itself and can be very flexible with the client having as little or as much input as they desire. However, the design stages followed to achieve the end result are always strictly observed to ensure a well thought out plan. At Graduate Landscapes, this starts with a consultation where one of our professional design team will visit your site to discuss your needs, requirements and any ideas that you may have. During this visit, a walk around your garden will highlight key elements and observations enabling us to develop a brief. First installation of Intecto Integrated PV Tile RENSON louvre panels for student The first installation of Romag’s new Intecto integrated PV roof tile has recently been completed in a new housing development in the North East of England. The ground-breaking new concept in building integrated PV combines renewable energy generation with a conventional colour matched tile design to enable the PV cell to blend seamlessly into conventional roofscapes. The first installation of the Intecto integrated PV tile in the UK has recently been completed by Gentoo Homes in its new housing development at Beechbrooke, in South Shields.
The new PV tiles are fitted simply and securely onto wood roofing battens using traditional roofing practices, with a guaranteed fixing system enabling the frameless Intecto units to sit flush with the conventional interlocking tiles.
The Intecto PV tiles have been specially designed and manufactured to match the conventional terracotta roof tiles used on the new Beechbrooke houses – ensuring that property aesthetics, design and visual appearance are not compromised by rooftop solar Installations.

UK-based manufacturer RENSON Fabrications Ltd., with production facility in Maidstone, develops and manufactures a wide range of products and systems, including window ventilators, louvres and continuous louvre systems. The special solar roof tiles incorporate the same high quality PV cells used in Romag’s existing range of PV products, enabling the new system to provide the same weatherproofing and protection measures provided by traditional tiles, but with the added benefit of renewable energy generation.

ErP means that all space and water heaters will need to display an energy label which will help both residential and commercial customers identify the most energy-efficient products on the market and brings heating products into line with other energy consuming goods such as fridges and washing machines. From the 26th September, ErP will apply to domestic and commercial heating and hot water products, including electrical powered heating, gas and oil boilers, water heaters and cylinders, as
well as renewable technologies such as solar thermal and heat pumps. To highlight the requirements under ErP, Mitsubishi Electric has also released a short video which explains how the Directive is designed to help phase out lower performing products whilst having a positive impact on the emissions levels across Europe and increase the share of renewable energies by 20%. These labels will show the efficiency ranging from the most efficient A++ to the least efficient G and will be clearly marked with coloured bars; from green (the most efficient) all the way down to red (least efficient). The details on the label will identify the efficiency band for heating, and where

Southampton University showcases Max Exterior Exciting Chester Project uses Cygnus wireless fire alarm system When it comes to sourcing materials for education sector builds, it’s difficult to find products that offer the freedom of creative expression as well as dependable durability. Yet with its extreme weather resistance and sleek contemporary appeal, Max Exterior ticked all the right boxes for the development of Southampton University’s Mayflower Halls.
Capturing the architect’s vision beautifully, Max Exterior rainscreen panelling was affixed in varying, complementing shades of grey, across the facade of Mayflower Halls. Contrasting red window frames and cut out brick detail punctuated the design adding to its truly impressive overall effect. Specialist facade contractors LSC
Facades looked to FunderMax’s high pressure laminate to help achieve the architect’s design. Choosing exacting solutions is something that’s formed part of their ethos since their business began. Paul Hughes, Director of Sales UK for FunderMax, gives further insight as to why Max Exterior was specified. “In today’s tough economic climate, the education sector is being placed under immense pressure to source cost-effective building solutions that
can stand up to tough challenges, be it our harsh climate or damage, such as graffiti. But it’s under these kind of pressures that Max Exterior comes into its own. Highly cost-effective, and extremely durable, these high pressure laminate panels offer the same aesthetic appeal (if not even moreso) of the many cementitious boards which are on the market – however, they have a distinctive and unique advantage – they have a higher level of impact resistance and can be easily cleaned. Something a cementatious board, by its very nature, is unable to offer. Exceptional performance, excellent quality and great aesthetics are the cornerstones of Max Exterior.” Contact www.fundermax.at/en www.lscfacades.co.uk
Bull Products’ Cygnus wireless fire alarm system is playing a part in the construction of one of the most exciting projects in England, RE: NEW Chester. RE: NEW is the name of the development project transforming Chester’s 1936 Art Deco Odeon building into a new world-class theatre, library and cinema. The £28 million two year project, which is scheduled for completion in November 2016, is to convert and extend the building to house the new theatre, library and cinema areas in a cultural centre and performing arts space. The local council appointed an awardwinning team which include architects, Bennetts Associates and main contractor Kier, to design and construct the project. The construction programme is complex, involving the complete re-building of the inside of the Odeon cinema and demolishing an adjacent seven storey office block to make way for the new build extension. To cater for health and safety requirements, main contractors Kier specified the Cygnus wireless fire alarm system to safeguard the construction workers on the site. This provides comprehensive fire safety and first aid protection all through a fully linked wireless network of detectors, call points and first aid alerts. There are some 62 smoke detectors installed around the 12,000m² site, 36 call points and 10 combined call points and first aid
alerts, all of which are carefully positioned for use when emergencies arise. The Cygnus alarm system can link as many as 480 alarm and detector units in different zones on a site, and individual units can be fire alarm call points, first aid alerts, combined call points and first aid alerts, smoke detectors or heat detectors. Designed for use on construction sites, the CE marked Cygnus system has been developed for use in dense concrete and steel structured buildings and areas where there are many other radio frequencies in operation, and so particular attention has been given to achieving an impressive connection range. Where there are multiple sites within range of each other, the Cygnus system has been designed to operate on different site addresses in order to keep each system separate and free from interference. The optional control panel is a major feature of the Cygnus system and provides a very sophisticated capability with an event log function which records any events such as alarm activation, low battery warning, and signal faults, all of which can be viewed if necessary in the history folder held on the panel. Bituchem sees first application of new Porous material Hard landscaping specialists, Bituchem has completed the first application of its advanced Natratex Cotswold Porous material at the recently redeveloped Royal William Yard in Plymouth. Approximately 2,000sq.m of the porous material was applied to the ‘secret garden’ car park, giving both a practical and aesthetically pleasing finish to the site. Designed by Dartingtonbased Gillespie Yunnie Architects, the new car park is situated within a number of Grade II listed walls, formerly a Grade I listed Nursery Walled Garden. The 140-space car park has used Bituchem’s Natratex Cotswold Porous material as well as real grass with plastic trays for reinforcement, to give the entire car park a natural drainage system. The Natratex Cotswold Porous material is particularly suitable for applications on sites with preservation restrictions, due to the lack of deep earth work needed. Bituchem re-designed its popular Natratex Cotswold material to replicate natural infiltration methods, in response
Flowcrete sponsors this issue of BCR UK: see them on page 8
to the demand for Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS). The asphalt material is laid on a porous receiving layer and has an open structure to allow water to permeate through the surface into the ground and eventually finding its way to a natural water source. The material has been designed to remove the need for conventional drainage systems, thus eliminating the likelihood of blocked drains and water contamination. RENSON louvre panels for student accommodations in London A good air quality is crucial for students to keep the focus during studying, in the end achieving better results. Therefore, all 419 student rooms of the project Paul St. East (Shoreditch, London) of full building envelope contractor FK Construction feature their own ventilation unit. The duct of the system is connected to a specially developed Renson louvre panel solution on top of every window in the building. For this application in 12-24 Paul Street, the project team of Renson Fabrications Ltd. developed a special solution, which combines a glazed-in louvre panel type 414 with a 150mm thick insulation panel to the rear with duct plenum. For accurate connection of the ventilation duct, the insulation panel was equipped with a duct opening during assembly for on-site connection. When no duct needs to be connected, the insulating back panel was installed fully closed, providing the required thermal resistance. “We were looking for a specific solution for this application and Renson Fabrications Ltd. was able to develop and manufacture a customised solution for us,” says Sean Keenan at FK Construction. “By integrating these glazedin louvre panels with special insulation on every window of a building, we could not only take care of ventilation and thermal resistance, but also add an additional architectural dimension to the façade of the building.” Renson is a trendsetter in ventilation, solar shading and

Since 1909 the company has developed and manufactured innovative products and solutions, which improve the living conditions of people and at the same time, cut energy costs. Renson Fabrications Ltd., with production facility in Maidstone, develops and manufactures a wide range of products and systems, including window ventilators, louvres and continuous louvre systems. The company provides standard as well as customised solutions to the construction market. “We offer architects, specifiers, developers, fabricators and installers a wide range of innovative systems, taking into account not only the ventilation and/or sun protection features, but also other aspects, such as thermal resistance and acoustic performance,” says Patrick Vandenbogaerde at RENSON. “For various applications in the UK, the project team of Renson has been developing special ventilation solutions with louvre panels, combined with options, such as dampers or an insulation panel on the rear. By integrating e.g. glazed-in louvre panels with special details, architects and installers take care of the necessary supply of fresh air, adding an architectural accent to the building.” Mechanical ventilation Renson Fabrications Ltd. not only focusses on these standard and customised solutions, but also has been developing very successful ventilation systems for several years. Its demandcontrolled ventilation system with
Renson’s demandcontrolled ventilation system combines the constant supply of fresh air through self-regulating vents and the extraction on-demand of polluted air thanks to the central extraction unit Healthbox®. Dynamic sensors measure the extraction air 24 hours a day on CO2 or humidity and/or VOCs and adapt the ventilation level to the needs of the residents in an intelligent way. In this way, the system makes a healthy indoor environment possible. The Healthbox®, installed in an unused corner in the attic or in a technical room, is calibrated fully automatically and regulates itself so as to achieve the exact extraction capacity for each room. This avoids the risk of adjustment errors, thereby ensuring a properly working ventilation system with a
proper flow rate in each room. This automatic calibration also leads to significant time savings, as installation takes only a couple of minutes. György Pócsi In order to explain the principles of this demand-controlled ventilation and to set up sales channels, Renson had appointed György Pócsi as Business development and Sales Manager for mechanical
ventilation in the UK. He has been in the HVAC market for more than 20 years. “I am looking forward to launch the Renson Mechanical ventilation activities in the UK, further strengthening its position as market leader in ventilation,” says György Pócsi. “I will use my experience to find new business opportunities and to help the local contacts to set up dedicated sales channels.” Contact Renson today on: +44 (0)1622 754123, email: info@rensonuk.net or visit: www.rensonuk.net

Gypsumtools: The Dry Lining Superstore The company was initially established in 2011 but its relaunch last year has enabled the team to experience significant growth and development in recent times, which has propelled the Gypsumtools name to the forefront of the tooling industry. The Leicester-based business operates from its base close to the city centre, where it occupies its own trade counter as well as running its newly renovated website and blog page, which offers useful tips and advice for tradesmen in the sector as well as DIY dabblers. The niche retailer specialises in the supply of plastering and dry lining tools but the branch also houses a tool service and repair centre for the maintenance and restoration of automatic taping tools.
“We aim to provide those within the plastering and dry lining trades with everything they need to complete their job, but also have ranges for the general DIY’er,” explained Lana Raynor, Marketing Assistant at Gypsumtools. “Our product range consists of numerous well-known brands all under one roof, with the
addition of some budget ranges to offer solutions for both the professional and DIY users.” The company’s competences include: the provision of plastering & dry lining tools, sanders & accessories, mixing tools & equipment, PPE, holesaws & accessories and drills/drill bits & tips as well as marking & setting out, staplers & fitting and automatic taping tools & repair services. Clearance products and special offers are also available for those in search of an online bargain. Inevitably, Gypsumtools’ main clients are those working within the plastering and dry lining trades, but its extensive range of products and general activities are utilised by general DIY’ers and those in related industries, such as electricians and carpenters. Stocking both higher range brands and specialist names ensures that all groups can be catered for accordingly (in terms of both individual budget and capability).
has in store for Gypsumtools, Lana concluded, “We have many plans for the business, including updates and additional features to our website, so watch this space! But one of the next additional services for us to offer will be a taping tool hire and leasing service, which will hopefully be up and running by the end of September.” Callum was also confident of continued progression, “We are constantly growing here at Gypsumtools,” he said. “We always acquire new brands and work strategically to develop our website, coming up with different ideas which will help the business to advance further in the future.” Contact T +44 (0)8456 254321 www.gypsumtools.com
