UK Roofing Awards 2016 – Recognising Great Roofing Roofing Contractors to Architects are being encouraged to enter projects for the annual UK Roofing Awards, which celebrates the very best in roofing. Since they began in 2005, the Awards have come to acknowledge the exacting standards of specialist heritage craftsmanship to projects utilising the latest materials and state of the art technology. Some of the projects are recognisable and very much a part of the UK landscape, such as London Victoria Station and Belfast City Hall. It should be noted that entries to do not have to be considered cultural or heritage icons to be entered, even the smallest of domestic properties have gone on to win accolades and praise. After all, the UK Roofing Awards recognises and rewards outstanding standards of workmanship and safety, two things that are essential for any project, no

SkySiren® PCS™ (Pre-Crush Sensing) represents a major step forward in powered access safety. It automatically stops a mobile elevating working platform (MEWP) boom before the operator comes into collision with an object that could lead to a trap or crush incident. The system is the first in the UK to offer a double protection barrier against trapping and crushing incidents, creating a new level of guarding, which its designers have called ‘Intelligent Secondary Guarding.’ SkySiren® PCS™ combines Nationwide Platforms’ pioneering SkySiren® secondary guarding device with a new system called Pre-Crush Sensing, which uses ultrasound sensors to detect objects that present a trapping or crushing hazard for the operator. As well as preventing trap and crush collisions before they can happen, the system has other key benefits. It warns operators about potential hazards, so they are more alert in high risk areas.

launch of the original SkySiren®, in 2011. Its pressure sensor bar, located across the MEWP controls, stops the machine if an operator’s body is pushed against it during a potential entrapment incident. The PCS™ system has eight ultrasonic sensors located behind and in front of the operator on the boom platform. These generate high frequency sound waves around the MEWP operator. When the platform moves to within a defined distance of an object, the sensors detect the sound waves that are reflected back from it. This triggers a signal to stop the MEWP.
Trapping and crushing incidents remain one of the major causes of serious injuries and fatalities involving MEWPs.
To start the machine again and move towards the working position, the operator simply resets the safety foot pedal. While moving within the ‘sensing zone’ around the object, the operator is continuously alerted by a flashing red light, and a personal alarm.
Nationwide Platforms was the first to respond to industry concerns with the

The pads have a water-resistant covering and a soft breathable, inner fabric that wicks away sweat whilst providing thermal protection from warm or cold surfaces. Durable and hardwearing, the distribution of the impact forces whilst kneeling allows the user unrivalled, all-day comfort and long-term knee protection, with the added significant advantage of helping to protect against back and neck pain.
Having researched the protective clothing market, we confirmed our belief that existing knee pads did nothing to cushion, comfort or protect the user’s knees from long term damage; in the UK the NHS replaces over 104,000 knees per year. In the U.S. this figure exceeds 600,000. We knew that for our knee pads to be really effective they needed to be made of soft flexible material and not foam, as pressure from kneeling causes foam to flatten or disintegrate. The technology is unique in that the patent is for the geometric structure and not the material; we are free to use any material that we deem appropriate to the product application. The secret to our own science therefore lies in the use of a special moulded leaf-spring suspended in an arch by a flexible honeycomb matrix. When pressure is applied directly above the spring it bends, dispersing pressure and distributing weight evenly. The matrix provides a holding mechanism for the spring to control its bend and stabilise the entire structure, allowing pressure to be distributed evenly time after time.
Both the honeycomb matrix and the leaf-spring are made from the same thermoplastic injection moulded material, ensuring a high compression rate and 100% recovery to its original shape, which means no loss of function over time. This combination gives the unique controlled distribution and deceleration of pressure – in other words protecting the rest of the body from the impact forces whilst kneeling, with the same pressure-relief benefits applying to our, soon to be introduced, new footwear and seating products.” The latest addition to the company’s range are Redbacks Strapped Kneepads; these have

The new Campus has two schools on site. Highfields, a 1,500 place secondary school and Penn Fields a 160 place special needs school.
Peter Dicken, Hauraton‘s Project Engineer comments, “Tan, light and dark grey paving blocks were used extensively to achieve a pleasing aesthetic appearance to the hard landscaping immediately surrounding the Campus buildings. Being particularly suitable for school yards and play grounds, our RECYFIX® PRO channels’ with their black FIBRETEC® gratings’ were chosen for this project as the grating’s smooth appearance blended in well with the desired design.”

Hauraton drainage systems at Vangarde Shopping Park, Monks Cross, York The award winning Vangarde Shopping Park located a mile or so North East of the historic city centre of York opened for business in April 2014. The Park has over 31,527m² of retail and leisure space, including an 8,556m² John Lewis, a 9,300m² Marks & Spencer and a 2.790m² Next outlet. The development is also home to a host of cafes and restaurants including Giraffe, Costa Coffee, Prezzo, Ed’s Easy Diner, Nando’s and Frankie & Benny’s. Set in a landscaped area with numerous lakes, the £multimillion Shopping Centre was developed the Oakgate Group and now managed by Workman Retail. The Marks & Spencer store is one of the retailer’s greenest to date, with a 60,000litre retaining tank for recycled rainwater, two green living walls, totalling over 167m² designed to attract wildlife and retain heat, electric car charging points, refurbished trolleys. The store is also part-powered by 600 solar panels – a first for Marks & Spencer. With 1,340 free car parking spaces,

surface finish that retains its black colour. The FIBRETEC® C250 HEELSAFE grating was specifically designed by Hauraton R & D engineers to enhance the flow of water into the channel. The slots are super smooth, elliptical openings with the moulded bars having slightly raised triangular bosses along their outside edges. As well as providing an elegant appearance, the feature ensures surface water is directed into the slots. This configuration also helps eliminate any cross-flow over the grating.
Over 1,700m of Hauraton RECYFIX® drainage channel were eventually installed by ground workers Howard Civil Engineering Limited during the three month installation process. 1,500m of RECYFIX® PLUS 100, 150 and 200 channels fitted with Class D400 ductile iron HEELSAFE gratings secured with bar and bolt locking were used in the main car park areas. The size installed depended on the areas to be drained – for example, the larger sized channels were installed in the 80metre runs so fewer outlets were needed. The paved pedestrian areas were drained with over 200m of RECYFIX® PRO 100 drainage channels fitted with Hauraton’s FIBRETEC® gratings.
The RECYFIX® PRO and PLUS channel component is made from tough, 100% recycled Polypropylene – Polyethylene (PP-PE). The channels arrive on site with the gratings factory fitted.
The material PA-GF, used to make the FIBRETEC® grating was especially developed by Hauraton; the tough, UV resistant, fibre
reinforced moulding offers high stability and huge strength for its weight. Complying with loading category Class C250 (BSEN 1433) the grating can easily take the weight of commercial delivery vehicles. The design is a real innovation as its non-corrosive material provides a visually appealing

Colin Taff, Hauraton‘s Project Engineer comments, “We worked closely with the main contractor and ground workers to ensure the drainage systems specified were going to be discreet, blended in well with the desired design effect and meet the loading Class required. It was particularly pleasing our RECYFIX® channels provided an effective drainage scheme and contributed to the many sustainable features the incorporated in the Vangarde Shopping Park enabling it to achieve a BREEAM excellent rating. main distinguishing characteristics that make them stand out from their competitors in the sector, “Two years ago we attended Ecobuild to launch the NRG plus, the first revolving door that turns human energy into kinetic energy,” he explained. “The push motion (activated by individuals pressing the door) powers a light, which is an energy-saving feature in itself due to the fact it’s only visible when in use.
Royal Boon Edam International BV is an international leader in entry solutions based in the Netherlands. The story behind the brand is actually a rather remarkable one: what initially began as a humble carpenter’s shop in Holland managed to grow so rapidly that it has now acquired a reputable status as a globally-recognised mobility hotspot authority with over 140 years of experience. Forming a UK subsidiary in 1985, Boon Edam is a family-run business that explicitly concentrates on bringing innovative mobility concepts to life in order to ease the efficiency of movement within a whole host of buildings. A large number of offices, educational establishments, airports, government bodies, hotels, restaurants, retail stores, finance & data centres, corporate headquarters and healthcare facilities have all reaped the benefits of working with the ISO 9001 accredited company. Boon Edam’s National Sales Manager Andrew Hamilton was keen to tell us more about the work they do and the role they take in shaping the structures of building entrances across the construction industry, “We are the largest revolving door company in the world!” he exclaimed. “As specialists, we boast the largest portfolio and therefore find ourselves in a unique position within the marketplace. We have a number of competitors, but they are unable to do what we can on a collective level. “Everything here is done internally, so we have a greater control over operations. We don’t use any external contractors;

asked about the company’s clientele and previously notable commissions. “Essentially providing products for the majority of large commercial buildings within the country means it is almost guaranteed that you will walk through a Boon Edam door at some point in your life!”
Conclusively, it is inevitable that entrances effectively shape visitors’ first impressions of a building – as it essentially acts as the gateway enabling them access to their chosen destination – so why should you settle for second best when choosing the doors, barriers and turnstiles for your premises? Selecting only the greatest and most reliable products for installation should be your key priority if you want to impress those coming into close proximity with your business.
Effectively offering two product categories - revolving doors and low level & high level security products (in the form of security doors & portals, speed gates, tripod turnstiles, full height turnstiles, barriers and access gates) – Boon Edam also has the capability to modernise current products with stylish yet functional retrofits and upgrades.
Boon Edam has previously worked to finalise projects for the Bahrain International Circuit (Bahrain), the New Century Global Center (China), the Amsterdam Arena (the Netherlands), TNT Green Office (the Netherlands), Miu Miu (worldwide), the Waterfront Hotel (Sweden), Burj Khalifa (Dubai) and the RTL Group (Germany) – these are just a few examples of the significant work the team have carried out.

superb visual and technical quality, our slabs are reasonably priced and can be created in unusual sizes and shapes not typically available in this country.” Having only recently entered the UK market (18 months ago, to be precise), the Holland-based company has been working continuously to reach out to prospective clients in an entirely new spectrum. Confirming attendance at various trade shows has been particularly essential for the team, who are bidding to increase brand
awareness through effective promotional strategies. Specific examples include the annual Landscape Show in London, FutureScape in Surrey and the Society of Garden Designers (SGD) Conferences in London. The Chelsea Flower Show provides Schellevis with the perfect opportunity to display its paving products, as this exhibition can facilitate the space to showcase what is effectively a pop-up garden, whilst Ecobuild 2014 (London) provided an excellent platform for the group to promote its products in the UK for the first time. Because concrete components are generally very large and heavy – and therefore quite difficult to manoeuvre – showcasing them at events in real size can be quite a struggle. Subsequently, Schellevis has erected a remarkable display at a permanent exhibition in London at the Building Centre for clients to gain access to all year round. CRL: Ten-year structural insurance & warranty of latent defects Until CRL’s ten-year structural defects insurance products were recommended to Nordic Construction UK, the national developer and contractor had been paying over-the-odds for the same level policies that were attached to household name providers. Nordic, a new company starting out in 2009, had ambitious growth plans. At a time when the property industry was suffering considerably, Nordic knew it was essential to scrutinise all outgoing costs and keep up its values of high standards. Its insurance policies had to be comprehensive and exact, and quickly underwritten to prove Nordic’s security. As a relatively new developer, Nordic knew it had to demonstrate unequivocally that it was a trustworthy and cost-effective contractor, delivering its clients’ schemes on time and within budget. Therefore, it had to be certain that its ten-year structural defects policies would not let them down. Mohammed Afzal, Commercial Manager, Nordic Construction, said, “Our sector is competitive and overrun with rogue contractors so it is vital for our fairly young company to sustain the highest construction standards, to assure clients of the long-term quality of the buildings.” In 2013, the developer won a significant £16million construction project to build a 339-bed mixed use student facility at Hope Street, Liverpool. Nordic was briefed to deliver the scheme in 18 months, by the end of Summer 2015. The project would be completed with fully-fitted kitchens and ensuite bathrooms, as well as communal
facilities including a cafe, gym and restaurant and bar units. To deliver this major scheme that would project the firm into the next stage of its growth, Nordic could afford no room for error. The need for a reliable and competitive insurance provider was crucial. Nordic’s Project Manager recommended CRL to the Commercial Manager, Mohammed Afzal. From previous experience, the Project Manager knew that CRL competed positively with the wellknown providers. CRL’s standard ten-year structural defects insurance cover not only offered all the covenants of the well-known providers’ but its on-hand service was the reassurance project managers, architects, quantity surveyors and funders needed to ensure the success of a major construction project. CRL’s ten-year structural defects insurance is not averse to unusual buildings and materials, and is based upon individual circumstances. The insurance products cover: Structural Defects – Indemnity against defects in design, workmanship, materials or components of the property for ten years after completion.
Road Bonds – Property Developers and house builders can guarantee satisfactory delivery of roads and enable them to be adopted on completion by the contractor. Building Control Expertise – Large construction, small extension, or property modification. CRL works with inspectors to ensure the safety of builders and endusers. Developer insolvency cover – Guarding against situations that might risk a build’s completion and insurance against the insolvency of the property developer. Upon practical completion of the Liverpool project at the end of August 2015, CRL’s ten-year structural defects insurance cover took effect and has been passed on to the tenants or owners of the apartments. As a result of the competitive quotes and speed to deliver the warranty, CRL is now Nordic’s number one choice of provider.
CRL sponsors this issue of BCR UK: see them on page 7
Mohammed said, “Using CRL’s insurance cover has assisted us in keeping within construction budgets, and ultimately realising profit for our business.” “CRL has been a genuine partners on this project, with us every step of the way from tender stages to the completion of each project. They are more than a product supplier, they are a valuable addition to our project team, offering their advice and support along the way. “Our relationship with CRL has already proven to be effective and profitable and they will remain on our preferred supplier framework as our go-to provider for structural defects insurance.” Contact T 0800 772 3200 info@c-r-l.com www.c-r-l.com

The first topic to be chosen is one which should be of interest to most people, focusing on the unavoidable challenges presented during the winter months. The poster is complimented by a handy infographic guide with hints and tips, including winter driving, preparing your home for winter, planning and of course working outside in winter weather, something that our engineers, as well as the wider industry face over the coming months. New JSPCheck uses RFID to Track, Inspect and Manage Equipment JSP has just launched a revolutionary new system to inspect and keep track of its height safety equipment, giving a company complete control of its assets and allowing it to quickly and easily cost out jobs, take inventories, prevent loss and comply with safety regulations. JSPCheck uses radio wave technology designed for use in tough construction and industrial markets. The system utilises durable radio frequency identification (RFID) tags to uniquely and accurately identify assets such as tools and equipment. It also includes a secure, powerful, cloud-based database for the user to accurately inspect, locate, assign, store and back up their own asset profiles and data in real time, plus RFID scanners to efficiently connect assets and data anywhere, at any time. Scanning can also be done using Android mobile devices.
each piece of equipment. The JSPCheck user simply has to scan RFID tagged assets and use the JSPCheck cloud software to perform and store safety inspections on them, as the required safety forms can be built into the system. Automatically updated, JSPCheck removes the need for a company to maintain data on its own servers and replaces inefficient pen and paper inspections. Disaster recovery of inspection histories is therefore completely taken care of. Easy to operate, JSPCheck has a myriad of uses, tracking asset and inspection history, asset location – including named locations or people and GPS coordinates – usage, warranty dates, date of first use, end of life date, manufacturer’s serial numbers and safety information on
For example, JSPCheck enables the user to log on at any time and from anywhere and see where, and to whom, a particular tool was last assigned, view the documentation and see the history associated with that tool. No more missing tools and equipment! This simple system, with everything happening via radio transmission, is fast, automatic and contactless. T +44 (0)1993 826050 uksales@jsp.co.uk www.jsp.co.uk

Research from Hochiki Europe reveals over half (56%) of European businesses are risking the safety of building occupants by failing to adjust security systems in accordance with change in use of space. With demand for Grade A office space outstripping supply in many major cities, organisations are investing in fit-outs and refurbishments to accommodate evolving needs but neglecting to alter fire and lighting safety systems to support this. Carried out by the Leading Designer and manufacturer of life safety systems, the study of installers also found that 55% feel their customers are more concerned with initial expenditure than Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) which could

compromise performance long-term. The study also highlighted maintenance spending as an area for concern. A fifth (22%) of installers surveyed think building managers view maintenance as an unnecessary expense. While almost three quarters (74%) believe that they view maintenance as simply a ‘tick-box’ exercise. To combat the issues highlighted in the survey, Hochiki Europe has created guides to simplify emergency lighting and fire safety installation and maintenance. Mortar bedding ridge tiles lime putty as the base, Flexim uses a modified linseed oil putty, which is mixed with polystyrene beads and fibres to give it strength, while remaining flexible enough to cope with the typical thermal movement of a modern roof.
Mortar bedding of ridge, hip and verge tiles has been a common practice for hundreds of years. But why do we use mortar for this purpose? Originally clay roof tiles were made by the same people that made the bricks for houses, and it was the builders who installed them. Therefore, it was not unusual for the builder to use lime mortar to fill in or secure edge tiles in order to prevent rain, snow and wind blowing into the roof and doing further damage. This type of mortar was made from lime putty mixed with sand, and was the only kind of mortar available for several hundred years. The invention of sand and cement mortar hundreds of years later allowed a much harder material to be produced which would not dissolve during severe storms. However, like many good things, this also has some disadvantages. Buildings expand and contract more than we would like to believe and sand and cement mortar is far less able to
cope with this movement than lime mortar was, which never really set. When castles were all made of stone, movement was not much of an issue, unless you were under attack from cannonballs! However, over the years we have introduced many different materials into our buildings, and each one of them will expand and contract at a different rate and speed. In addition, some will react to moisture while others will not. As a result, today’s structures, whilst very stable, are far from rigid and need the ability to move at every interface; where a brick wall meets a window, where a floor meets a wall, where a partition meets a ceiling, and where a roof meets a wall or chimney. Therefore, the last thing you want is a material that is too rigid, and brittle, which is often the case with cement and sand roof mortar. Whilst there are indeed examples of cement and sand mortar performing well on concrete roofs for over 80 years, the recent past
has seen increasing numbers of more modern roofs where mortar bedding has failed within 10 years. It is for this reason that the NHBC now insist that all ridge and hip tiles are mechanically fixed. This has allowed the manufacturers of dry-fix systems and alternative tile fixing products such as Flexim Roof Putty, to supply roofers with components that eliminate the need for mortar bedding. While the trade media has been full with various manufacturers promoting the benefits of their latest dry-fix product, the core issue in terms of what has actually caused mortar bedding failures appears to have been forgotten. Firstly, where concrete and resin slate tiles are formed on a metal mould, the underside is usually treated with a soap or silicone mould release agent. Anyone who has tried sticking anything to a soap or silicone treated surface will know how difficult this can be! Secondly, many concrete-based
roof tiles are coated on their top surface with a polymer coating, to reduce the risk of efflorescence forming on the top surface. This also makes the tiles look shiny, and helps to keep moss and algae from growing on the surface. But equally, it also makes it difficult for mortar to stick to the surface. It is hardly surprising, then, that cement and sand mortar bedding is failing on modern roofs, where the structure is flexing and the mortar finds it difficult to stick to either the top or underside of a tile or ridge!
Costs When time and labour are taken into account, Flexim is much cheaper than sand and cement. It is premixed and ready-to-use Health & Environment Flexim is formulated using natural ingredients and doesn’t harm the environment. And just as importantly from a health and safety perspective, the lightweight Flexim strips are not a backbreaker to transport onto the roof and install. Weather Flexim is instantly waterproof and, will not wash out after application, eliminating any need to return to the job side twice
The latest edition of BS 5534 requires that all ridges and hips are mechanically fixed, and that all edge tiles are twice fixed. It also states that the adhesive qualities of mortar bedding should be ignored when calculating wind uplift resistance, effectively classifying mortar as a filler. Nevertheless, this ability to fill holes is important, as it prevents wind, rain, snow, birds, insects and dust from entering a roof, where they can do further damage.
Guarantee & Certified Flexim is guaranteed for a period of 10 years, when installed in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidelines and NHBC standards. It also complies with all regulations, as set by the BBA.
So what is the perfect solution? Surely it would be a pre-mixed replacement for mortar that is simple to install and flexible.

Fabrics News
Bespoke Innovative Market Leading Solutions Building and Construction Review is incredibly pleased to present APT Fabrics and commend its team upon achieving its coveted Commitment to Excellence profile. In 2008, Stanley Russell decided to put his 30 years of enriched expertise in fabrics to even greater use by setting up his own business. His knowledge in every facet of the sector – from coating to weaving – prompted the budding entrepreneur into starting up a company specialising in high performance products. The resulting APT Fabrics is situated in Northern Ireland and is now a renowned name in the delivery of specialist solutions aimed at the PPE and technical clothing segment. Its competencies extend to customised fabric sourcing and modification services, and seminars, consultancy and technical textile training schemes are also available to be implemented where necessary. The reliable supplier is utilised by companies all over the globe, effectively serving a large range of individuals and organisations: ambulances, utility services, military bases and police forces are a few notable examples of those requiring these specialist fabrics. Its ever-growing customer base is made even more impressive with the addition of those employed at all of the police departments in the UK, who resolutely swear by the meticulously designed waterproof materials delivered to them. Covering such esteemed establishments is a testament to APT Fabrics’ phenomenal level of reliability, professionalism and competency. Founder Stanley was keen to discuss this reputable status in more depth, “Unlike many similar marketed products, ours actually work!” he exclaimed. “Sometimes it can be easy to buy clothing just for the brand name, but it’s so important to ensure that the purchased garments are actually appropriate for your particular line of work. “Any product we design comes with a 100% money back guarantee, so if customers are dissatisfied or believe the item of clothing doesn’t work then they have that fallback (in the unlikely event they aren’t happy
with the product). This goes to show just how confident we are about all of our performance fabrics.” The universally appreciated, trademarked, technical and performance fabrics are uniquely manufactured to remain in line with the company’s stringent product requirements. The vast portfolio features a flexible waterproof selection comprising heavyduty laminated, breathable waterproof fabrics (the Tornado range), lightweight, breathable foul weather clothing (the Tempest range) and items with integrated waterproof, flame retardant and antistatic properties (the Typhoon range). Another popular variation is APT Fabrics Evolution; thermal, moisture-wicking fabrics which include an innovative range of performance fleece fabrics, which are momentarily used by Aclimatise, a brand that appreciates the garments for their breathable polyurethane membrane incorporating 30% aluminium. A durable water repellent is applied to the ‘fabrics’ surface and the incorporated lining is moisture wicking and antistatic. This Ultimate Protection line combines protection,
14
flexibility and comfort in the form of clothing that can function in all temperatures. Retaining a constant temperature even when moving from different climates, the waterproof garments prevent the need to wear layers in cold conditions and have been verified to function in temperatures from as low as -30C to +30C. “As a company, we are always innovating; coming up with outstanding products and considering how to bring new technologies into current workplaces,” Stanley continued. “We pride ourselves on product innovation, developing products which pass all of the latest quality and safety standards. We have a number of exciting new products in the pipeline which we aren’t at liberty to detail at the moment, but our latest line is the Eco-Air range, which we are hoping to release early next year.” The exciting Eco-Air range centres on a polyester fabric suitable for many applications. Influenced by its current Tornado and Tempest products, the brand will feature waterproof and breathable workwear materials that are EN20471 certified and made completely from polyester (even the zips
and poppers). APT Fabrics’ newest technology is therefore fully recyclable in its construction: the laminated fabric can be washed, shredded and reverted back into polyester chips upon reaching the end of its product life. Having already developed this specialist fabric, the company are now looking to create a CE-marked range of garments that can be easily regurgitated. This concept is an industry first, as currently 95% of all hi-vis (waterproof and non-waterproof) clothes go into landfill once no longer usable. APT Fabrics is therefore striving to devise a closed-loop system whereby customers can use their hi-vis clothing confident in the belief that it will be safely recycled once finished with. Beautiful and Functional Fire Sculpture The Firepit Company specialises in the design of bespoke fireballs (spherical firepits) to enhance your outside space. Sculptural Artist Andy Gage creates these stunning masterpieces which are perfect for warming up those chilly evenings or just as a fantastic garden sculpture, especially when illuminated with electric lights. The unique and beautiful creations can be made bespoke to your requirements and can include a company logo, making your premises really stand out. Designs are generated following a discussion with Andy, during which he will talk you through the process of creating your own piece of art. Alternatively you can choose a unique fireball from the Andy Gage Collection – A series of popular themes, created by Andy to bring
out the best from this unique form. Andy began making fireballs in 2013. Inspired by the variety of Firepits available on the market, he decided to produce his own individual, artistic Fireballs. The business grew rapidly but Andy strives to remain dedicated to providing a personal and professional service to all customers.
“My wife and I have a mixed farm with Poultry, Horses and Cropping,” commented Andy. “I started making Fireballs as a diversification to keep me busy during our slow periods on the farm. I really enjoy the whole process from discussing ideas and inspirations with clients for their Fireball, and then turning their ideas into reality. Our plan is to continue to grow the company, but our attention to detail and quality on behalf of our clients will be at the forefront of our business as we go forward creating unique, individual art works.” To find out more contact Andy on: +44 (0)7977 222884 or email: andy@thefirepitcompany.co.uk. A brand new luxury apartment complex in London’s Kensington has been fitted with two EcoBloc Flex stormwater tanks from Graf UK – providing a highly effective drainage system that reduces the loading on the public sewers and complies fully with official run-off requirements set by the local authority and Thames Water. Set in an area of landscaped gardens that stretch from the south side of Holland Park to Kensington High Street, the Hollandgreen development includes three residential blocks, comprising 54 apartments. Developed by real estate company Chelsfield, the apartments share the development land with the new Design Museum site (formerly home to the Commonwealth Institute) – a Grade II-listed building boasting the largest parabolic copper roof in the world. Given the museum roof’s undulating design, rainwater collects at two focused locations, so a siphonic drainage system is in place to discharge this water instantaneously and avoid build-up on the roof. Flow rates into the siphonic
outlets can be as high as 180l/s – and to meet criteria set by the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, the flow rate of surface water being discharged from the new development and the Design Museum roof to the public sewer network must stay within strict lower limits. Grand Designs Live Review

Established in July 2015 by 5 Digital Art and Technology graduates, TruVision is an exciting new start-up offering an incredible new service to the Architecture Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry. Using virtual reality technology, the team create scale accurate 3D models of architectural drawings that clients are able to virtually walk around using a virtual reality headset and a controller. This enables the clients and architects to gauge an accurate sense of space, prior to the building’s construction.
Proudly sponsored by Anglian Home Improvements, the show is set to be even bigger and better than ever before with next year’s edition, which is due to take place over the course of 9 days. Running from 30th April – 8th May 2016, this will be a truly unmissable occasion for those interested in home design and improvements. Visitors will be provided with the opportunity to view all of the latest developments in the sector, including innovative new products which will transform every room in the house. KEVIN McCloud’s Green Hero of Grand Designs Wind power without the turbine. Solar power without the panels. The solution to rainy washing days, saving time and worry. It saves money by not using energy to dry your clothes. Quite simply, it is an umbrella cover that permanently covers a rotary line, protects your laundry from rain, birds and more. Dryline payback time is 6 to 8 months. In terms of new build, outdoor drying facilities are a requirement for most families, especially if they want to
create a sustainable environment, free of damp, mould and the attendant health problems. Rather than just fitting a washing line in the garden that is only usable when the weather is dry all day, why not fit a Rotaire Dryline, an ingenious British invention that turns the airer into an umbrella which allows it to dry even in rain. Thousands of happy customers have told us what a difference it makes to their lives, being able to hang out and leave – to go to work, to shop, to pick up the kids and enjoy their lives.
Rotaire was awarded Best Product by PRIME and Sage One Accounts, and Kevin McCloud said that it was ‘stupidly brilliant!’ meaning that it was so obvious it had never occurred to anyone until now. He loves it, as it resonates with his Green leanings in terms of good building design. At present, it is only available online, from: www.rotaire.com and Rotaire can be contacted on: +44 (0)1684 575156.

RENSON in Maidstone: Also strong in customised solutions ®
RENSON® is a trendsetter in ventilation, solar shading and terrace covers. Since 1909, the company has developed and manufactured innovative products and solutions, which improve the living conditions of people and at the same time, cut energy costs – Creating healthy spaces! Broad programme The product ranges of this UK-manufacturer, based in Maidstone, include window ventilators, louvres and continuous louvre systems as well as hinges, sun protection elements with aluminium blades and screens and terrace covers. The Invisivent®EVO HR, for instance, provides the ideal window vent for wind-impacted applications such as high-rise buildings and apartment buildings on the coast. The louvres and the Linius® continuous louvre system are aesthetic aluminium solutions, allowing the passage of air in and out of buildings whilst protecting these buildings and other installations from wind, rain and vermin. RENSON® also offers a complete set of acoustic louvre panels and Linius® solutions. Strong in customised solutions “We offer architects, specifiers, developers, fabricators and installers a wide range of innovative systems, taking into account not only the ventilation and/or sun protection features, but also other aspects, such as thermal resistance and acoustic performance,” says Patrick Vandenbogaerde at RENSON. “For various applications in the UK, the project team of Renson has been developing special ventilation solutions with louvre panels, combined with options, such as dampers or an insulation panel on the rear. By integrating e.g. glazed-in louvre panels with special details, architects and
installers take care of the necessary supply of fresh air, adding an architectural accent to the building.” Student rooms Paul St. East A good air quality is crucial for students to keep the focus during studying, in the end achieving better results. Therefore, all 419 student rooms of the project Paul St. East (Shoreditch, London) of full building envelope contractor FK Construction feature their own ventilation unit. The duct of the system is connected to a specially developed Renson louvre panel solution on top of every window in the building. For this application in 1224 Paul Street, the project team of Renson Fabrications Ltd. developed a special solution, which combines a glazed-in louvre panel type 414 with a 150mm thick insulation panel to the rear with duct plenum. For accurate connection of the ventilation duct, the insulation panel was equipped with a duct opening during assembly for on-site connection. When no duct needs to be connected, the insulating back panel was installed fully closed, providing the required thermal resistance. “We were looking for
György Pócsi, Rensons Business Development & Sales Manager for Mechanical Ventilation in the UK
a specific solution for this application and Renson Fabrications Ltd. was able to develop and manufacture these customized glazed-in louvre panels with special insulation,” says Sean Keenan at FK Construction. Mechanical ventilation Renson Fabrications Ltd. not only focusses on these standard and customised solutions, but also has been developing very successful ventilation systems for several years. Its demandcontrolled ventilation system with the Healthbox® ensures the house is optimally ventilated, according to the resident’s activities. This ventilation system really can help homes reduce their energy consumption whilst creating a healthy indoor environment. Renson’s demand-controlled ventilation system combines the constant supply of fresh air through self-regulating vents and the extraction on-demand of polluted air thanks to the central extraction unit Healthbox®. Dynamic sensors measure the extraction air 24 hours a day on CO2 or humidity and/or VOCs and adapt the ventilation level to the needs of the residents in an intelligent way. In this way, the system makes a healthy indoor environment possible.
CRL sponsors this issue of BCR UK: see them on page 7
The Healthbox®, installed in an unused corner in the attic or in a technical room, is calibrated fully automatically and regulates itself so as to achieve the exact extraction capacity for each room. This avoids the risk of adjustment errors, thereby ensuring a properly working ventilation system with a proper flow rate in each room. This automatic calibration also leads to significant time savings, as installation takes only a couple of minutes. György Pócsi In order to explain the principles of this demand-controlled ventilation and to set up sales channels, Renson had appointed György Pócsi as Business development and sales manager for mechanical ventilation in the UK. He has been in the HVAC market for more than 20 years. “I am looking forward to launch the Renson Mechanical ventilation activities in the UK, further strengthening its position as market leader in ventilation,” says György Pócsi. “I will use my experience to find new business opportunities and to help the local contacts to set up dedicated sales channels.” Contact Renson today on: +44 (0)1622 754123, email: info@rensonuk.net or visit: www.rensonuk.net

Is your project in the Bag? Modern methods of construction are increasingly complex in ever decreasing space. There is more demand for specialised materials – including floor finishes. Many floor coverings today are becoming thinner and lighter. As a result, many require a much higher standard of surface regularity of the substrate below – up to SR1. Quality of finish has to be married with speed of construction, particularly where any delay can result in very high costs.
sHealth s & Safety: Generation of dust and waste is a real concern for modern clean, clear sites.
This is clearly demonstrated when concrete slabs are used within multi storey construction, the slabs then have to be made level enough to receive a finished floor covering. After suitable preparation the slab is ready to receive a levelling compound. Currently most high performance, thin levelling compounds are delivered to site in bags. The Challenges faced by sites: sCosts: s high performance bagged products are expensive and usually delivered in pallets (40 x 25kg bags). They also require space and time to be transported to site, to unload and to store, and then have to be moved to where they are applied. As an example, it would indicatively take 400x 25kg bags to cover an area of 500m2 at 12mm. This number of bags requires 10 pallets
sLogistics: s storage, palletised materials require a lot of room on sites where space is a premium sTime s Management: there are health and safety implications to be considered, and additional
management time to be spent on risk assessment and method statements sHandling: s bags are extremely time consuming to install and involve manual handling
The Solution Excelio – a new and innovative product developed by Anhydritec addresses all of the concerns above. sInnovation: s Excelio is the first UK pumpable flowing substrate leveller, mixed off site, in a regulated and approved ready mix plant, which achieves SR1 surface regularity sCosts: s the ready mix solution offers huge material cost savings as a sub base leveller that can be applied as thinly as 12mm sLogistics: s Excelio is the first readymix truck delivered solution to then be pump applied sTime s Management: (example) pumping from a ready mix truck, 500m2 can be delivered in less than 1 hour, compared with several days for bagged products sHandling: s There is no manual handling required sHealth s & Safety: no dust and no waste generated. In a nutshell, Excelio is cost-effective, simple, clean and quick. Excelio eliminates the hundreds of bags that would usually be required in a large scale construction project. It also cuts down on the number of delivery vehicles required on site – one 8m3 truck mixer carrying 7m3 can cover over 500m2 @ 12mm. This is equivalent to 400 bags of levelling compound, and 10 pallets. Excelio also eliminates the need for remedial grinding and application of costly smoothing compounds. consequences, including injury or even death from objects falling onto a substandard helmet.
JSP’s Shield shape badge of identity has become ever more important in recent years owing to the increasing proliferation of cheap, illegal, counterfeit helmets in international circulation that do not meet the requirements of British and European Standard EN397. The use of fake PPE can have devastating

New Video shows Big Advantages of Airpop ‘Blown Bead’ Insulation in new Build Properties A new six-minute video from the NBBA (National Blown Bead Association) demonstrates the clear advantages of airpop® over traditional mineral fibre cavity insulation for all types of new build properties. The video (http://www.eps.co.uk/news/airpopvideo. html) shot on real residential building sites in England and Northern Ireland states that the speed, simplicity and long-term effectiveness of blowing airpop® (expanded polystyrene) beads into cavity walls enables building and construction companies to achieve lamda values which are superior to other insulation – allowing Part L of Building Regulations to be easily met or exceeded. The video also shows how the compact, on-site installation process carried out by an NBBA member ensures fast coverage in all areas of the most complex cavities and can easily be scheduled so as not to interfere with other trades on site. According to the video, produced by the EPS group of the British Plastics Federation, airpop® is a ‘best in class’ insulation material which offers long-term performance because it also overcomes problems of settlement encountered with lesser materials.
The unique nature of the fast-flowing beads mean they fill from the smallest to the widest cavities as well as reaching complex internal geometries which demand extreme, high insulation performance. A special test rig in the video is used to show that the beads flow at high speed like liquid into every part of the cavity. Inta introduces its best-ever magnetic filter Leading heating equipment manufacturer Inta has introduced its second-generation intaKlean magnetic filter. Designed to combat contamination problems caused by rogue particles in fluid-based heating systems, the intaKlean 2 is the first of its kind to feature a double gauze filter, which actively captures and keeps hold of non-ferrous debris, as well as eliminating trapped air. As fluid circulates around the filter body, non-ferrous foreign matter is caught and retained in the gauze, while the remaining ferrous debris is drawn to the centre of the filter and captured by the powerful neodymium magnet. The intaKlean 2’s full bore butterfly valves allow for convenient in-line installation without restricting water flow, and the magnet can be removed while the system is live for effortless cleaning. Its anti-blockage design guarantees continuous flow even if the filter has not been serviced. Responding to feedback received from plumbers and installers about the original model, the intaKlean 2 is Inta’s best filter to date and features a host of developments over the first generation including a reduced overall footprint, making it one of the smallest on the market, a 360 degree fully-rotatable filter pot for flexible access, and a low profile drain valve making it easy to fit and service.
installers – the people who actually work with it – to see how we could make our original intaKlean better, and we identified the need for a stronger, more effective filter that is versatile and can be serviced with greater ease, and so we went back to the drawing board and developed the intaKlean 2.”
Speaking of the manufacturer’s commitment to product development, managing director Stuart Gizzi, said, “We’re proud to introduce the intaKlean 2 to the market. We worked closely with plumbers and

safety policies are being followed on all of our sites across thousands of operatives. If they’re not, untrained workers won’t be able to enter and we are alerted to the problem.”
Using cloud technology, it allows construction companies to define rules of entry to their sites based on their job role and the training required for that role. By providing the tools to track who has attended which training courses across all sites, MSkills can then inform access control systems to grant or deny access at the turnstile, thus automatically enforcing company policies.
Delivering the training is absolutely necessary, but failure to share training attendance records between sites and head office has seen many companies lose out on several hundred thousand pounds per annum, in some cases as much as £0.5m in lost CITB grants.
“What’s different about MSkills is its ability to link seamlessly with our access control system,” Health and Safety Director at Lend Lease, Brian Van Campenhout said, “This allows us to rest assured our health and

Pro-mats: The Small-Scale Project that made a Massive Difference When the artificial grass, rubber play surfacing and skate park specialists Pro-mats were approached by a lady in Birmingham with a specific gardening request they rose to the occasion with great determination and enthusiasm. The client had recently secured longterm foster care of a young autistic girl with a particular fondness of the outdoors; following pathways and feeling different textures. During the consultation it became known that the customer – who was currently undergoing cancer treatment – was becoming increasingly frustrated that she couldn’t always take her daughter to the local park, and wanted a safe place for her to play whilst in the comfort of her own home. Subsequently, the Pro-mats team set to work on creating a cost-effective solution that would function in a relatively small area. The effect of the

Further additions included artificial grass footsteps in the rubber pathway (to provide yet another texture
Once the project was complete, the client was so thrilled with the final result that she broke down in tears, claiming that the transformation of her garden was ‘so meaningful’ and ‘life-changing.’ This incredible case study is just one example of how the Midlands-based group have made a significant impact with their customisable services; the Pro-mats team can offer their refined capabilities on an even larger scale to commercial clients in and around Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham, Lichfield, Walsall, Wolverhampton, Solihull, Coventry, Redditch and Bromsgrove. frequency sound waves around the MEWP operator. When the platform moves to within a defined distance of an object, the sensors detect the sound waves that are reflected back from it. This triggers a signal to stop the MEWP.
Trapping and crushing incidents
To start the machine again, and move towards the working position, the operator simply resets the safety foot pedal. While moving within the ‘sensing zone’ around the object, the operator is continuously alerted by a flashing red light, and a personal alarm. remain one of the major causes of serious injuries and fatalities involving MEWPs. Nationwide Platforms was the first to respond to industry concerns with the launch of the original SkySiren® in 2011. Its pressure sensor bar, located across the MEWP controls, stops the machine if an operator’s body is pushed against it during a potential entrapment incident. Following a three-year development programme, BlueSky Solutions, part of Lavendon Group, is now adding a new level of protection with SkySiren® PCS™ The PCS™ system has eight ultrasonic sensors located behind and in front of the operator on the boom platform. These generate high
If subsequently, the platform is operated in a way that risks entrapment, the SkySiren® pressure sensor bar located across the control panel continues to protect the operator by stopping the MEWP. It then raises the alarm with a strobe light and a klaxon. SkySiren® PCS™ incorporates the latest version of SkySiren®, which for the first time can be integrated with the SkySentry™ authorised access and data reporting system. This gives MEWP managers and operators new opportunities to respond effectively to risks, and target measures to improve processes and training. T +44 (0)844 381 4478 www.nationwideplatforms.co.uk
Cygnus Wireless Fire Alarm accommodates JCOP Update The CE marked Cygnus wireless fire alarm system from Bull Products, which is used widely on UK construction sites, has just been extended to include EN54 compliant parts to comply with the new requirements of JCOP 9th edition for use in temporary accommodation units. The only significant change that has been made to JCOP in relation to fire alarms is, a fully certified EN54 Fire alarm system must be installed in TAU’s (Temporary Accommodation Units) which are located either inside the building under construction or refurbishment; inside another permanent building; or within 10m of such buildings. Other than this small change, Cygnus fire alarms manufactured by Bull Products remain one of the leading alarm systems for construction sites. The new Cygnus EN54 unit can be easily linked into the Cygnus system network of devices on the overall construction site via the Cygnus input/output unit. Designed and developed with a number of major construction companies as a temporary system for use on
construction sites, the Cygnus system has an impressive capability for linking together 480 units in 15 zones around evolving construction sites, each zone having a capacity of 32 units. The system can be used time and time again on any type of construction site. T +44 (0)844 669 1111 info@bullproducts.co.uk www.bullproducts.co.uk

As I entered the York based sales office to interview the Brand Manager for information on the new ‘Black Edition’ range, I felt like the bad guy in a western film as a series of office doors ominously closed in front of me. It was very clear that details on the new range are a closely guarded secret and are certainly not yet being released. The Abracs ‘Black Edition’ range is due to hit the market early in 2016 and Abracs have confirmed that only a limited number of products will be made available. According to Brand Manager, Alex Gowans, it will be one of the highest quality and most desirable products that Abracs has ever released. Which category this range will fall into is still undisclosed (despite my persistent journalistic enquiries). All I can say is that Abracs are very proud of their 2015 product development and have never been as secretive in the past so I’m confident that this product is going to be one that is well worth the wait.
