Tubosider UK has been awarded the Civil Engineering company of the year by Building and Construction Review UK. The business, based in St Helens, Merseyside, is the market leader in the supply and manufacture of corrugated steel pipe and WRc-approved storm water management systems, culverts and tunnels across the UK. Since 1987, its systems have been widely used across a range of large-scale high-profile construction projects from premiership football stadiums to hospitals and large scale retail and industrial sites. Its stormwater tanks are the most cost effective and flexible storage and disposal solution on the market. Fabricated on site from a range of Helibore galvanised corrugated

steel pipe, Tubosider’s tanks provide an infinite variety of layouts. As each tank is custom built with all the required access shafts, ladders, inlet and outlet connections – this makes them the easier and faster systems to install.

a simple pipe laying exercise.” This core business focus on innovation has directly led to the development of Tubosider’s latest product – a range of WRcapproved chamber systems – which launched in January 2016.

With more design choices, fewer manholes and less underground pipework, it’s no surprise that Tubosider is able to offer simpler, more flexible, storm water solutions. So, compared to a crate system, this can reduce the end cost by as much as 40% - great news for the customer. And one of the reasons why Tubosider has been offered the award.

The new range of chambers have a unique, certified integral lifting detail for easy installation. Fabricated from galvanised steel, the chamber is able to be lifted into an excavation. A lifting ring certified to the required weight is secured by multiple incorporated slinging points that are part of the chamber design.

Tubosider MD Anne Duckworth explained: “We pride ourselves on our value engineering proposition, so it’s great to be recognised with this award for our products and services by Building and Construction Review Magazine.

The chamber design was developed to meet market demand after Tubosider’s design team saw its potential in helping to save time, costs and reduce health and safety issues compared to installing modular systems.

“Our design team will work with a customer to create a system that meets the needs of their site brief. Customers will often pick up the phone and see whether we can suggest a different way of solving a challenge they might have with a particular project or site.

Paul Rawcliffe, Technical Manager at Tubosider UK, said: “The chambers are a great example of how our design team was able to develop something completely new that solved several everyday challenges our customers face on site.” “As with many of our drainage solutions, this chamber can be made in our factory and delivered to site ready to install, which makes the process even easier. The chambers were tested in situ and are now WRc approved. A full installation guide is now available to customers.” For more information about Tubosider visit www.tubosider.co.uk or follow LinkedIn/TubosiderUK or @tubosider.

ICYNENE SPRAY FOAM INSULATION PRODUCTS The Icynene Insulation System is a series of soft, flexible, breathable spray foam insulation products, Icynene insulation is ideally suited for lofts, flat roofs, timber frame and sound insulation. Icynene can be applied directly to breathable or non-breathable roofing felts and recently received BBA certification for this application. When sprayed in place Icynene expands completely filling all cavities and voids creating a sealed building envelope which eliminates air leakage/infiltration. Air leakage/infiltration can account for up to 50% of the heat loss from a building. Unlike other foams, Icynene’s unique formulation is 100% water blown and therefore contains no harmful blowing agents, volatile organic compounds, HCFCs, HFAs, HFCs or formaldehyde.

With an outstanding reputation for quality, value and customer service, Sundolitt manufacture and supply EPS (expanded polystyrene) and XPS (extruded polystyrene) products in a wide range of sizes, shapes and specifications for use in the construction and civil engineering sectors. It is the UK business of the Sunde Group, a highly respected European leader in the manufacture of EPS and XPS products and one of the first companies in the world to develop polystyrene commercially. The Sunde group was founded in 1917 by Karl Sunde, as a fishing net manufacturer. When experiencing problems with the cork, the company began seeking an alternative material and in 1950, polystyrene was adopted. The company has since grown into one of the largest polystyrene producers in the world with 13 factories across Europe including 3 in the UK, with a turnover of 200 million a year. The Sunde group consists of 3 divisionsSunpack, which manufacturers packaging, Sunde, which deals with raw materials, and of course Sundolitt, the construction side of the business. “Sundolitt provides the right product in the right place, at

We offer customers expert advice on every aspect of our products and applications and are happy to provide specialist project expertise to help you provide innovative solutions using EPS or XPS.” Sundolitt products play a crucial role in many industries. They can be used for high-performance insulation in

For more demanding applications where combined thermal insulation and load-bearing support is needed, XPS polystyrene has been developed. Recently introduced to the UK, XPS is not affected by rain, snow or frost and its closedcell formulation means it retains its insulation performance even in the event that it is installed in a moist environment or in buildings which may be subjected to leakage, precipitation or ingress of water. It is produced in a wide range of insulation types, thicknesses and formats.

products such as insulated flooring panels, insulated concrete formwork (ICF), foundation systems and highly technical products for venting noxious gases from under buildings. Using the extremely versatile EPS, products can be moulded into many different shapes for use within the construction industry. Whether your application is primarily for insulation purposes, architectural detailing or the creation of actual building elements EPS is the perfect solution. “We are the only company in the UK

When asked to discuss the company’s plans for the future, Philip concluded: “We are constantly expanding as a group. We currently have 2 new factories under development and are looking to expand our footprint in the UK by creating a stronger presence in the South. “As we are already the market leader in Norway, Denmark and Sweden, our ambition is to achieve this in every country we serve.” Contact T +44 (0) 1786 471586 enquiriesuk@sundolitt.com www.sundolitt.co.uk

the market and from there the completely new material Resysta was created. “Reliable, sustainable and durable, the revolutionary Resysta is truly a step forward in construction material technology,” commented David Whitehill of Falcon Panel Products. “When Resysta is first witnessed, it is impossible not to see its endless benefits!”

Building and Construction Review is proud to present its Product Innovation edition featuring the new innovative material for the construction industry, Resysta. Following 15 years of development, Resysta is an exciting new alternative to traditional timber fascias and decking. Produced from approx. 60% rice husk, approx. 22% common salt and approx. 18% mineral oil, the fibre reinforced hybrid material is environmentally friendly as well as extremely weather resistant against sun, rain, snow or salt water.

applications are possible. Resysta was developed in response to a demand for sustainably sourced hardwood of the right quality. The brief was to develop something as good as, or which out-performed, the highest grade hardwood on

Offering the look and feel of wood, Resysta is extremely easy to use and can be worked by any competent joiner. Resysta offers a low Total Cost of Ownership due to its minimal maintenance requirement, which is a key benefit for most projects. The fibre reinforced hybrid material is absolutely water resistant making cracks and

Due to Resysta being both durable and aesthetically pleasing, it was selected to be used for the new Waitrose site in Helensburgh. Developers wanted to create a design that was both visually attractive and complementary to the locale. Positioned at the gateway to Helensburgh coming from Glasgow, the location is separated from the Clyde Estuary by only the North Clyde Railway, leaving the site very exposed. The marine environment and frequent rain meant that specified materials needed to be able to cope with these demanding conditions. Using traditional timber cladding would be a challenge, if not an impossibility because the material would deteriorate over time. Visual design requirements were also an important consideration in the building’s planning, as the Helensburgh City Community Council (HCC) published a Design Statement to promote and encourage Design Excellence in future developments.

As Resysta complies with HCCs design statement in terms of blending in with the natural materials used in both this construction and other developments in the area, as well as coping well with the environment, it was the perfect solution to suit these requirements. The cladding is expected to endure the wet conditions of the location with very little upkeep, so the soffit will continue to be an attractive focal point of the building for years to come. Andrew Thorp, Manager of Architecture for Waitrose commented, “We are trialling Resysta as it is an alternative to timber that looks great and is low maintenance. You would never know at our Helensburgh store that the soffit wasn’t timber.” More information about Resysta and the product range can be found at the Falcon website www.falconpp.co.uk/resysta.php Falcon Panel Products can be contacted on; T 0121 525 8844 simon@falconpp.co.uk www.falconpp.co.uk/ resysta-s1.php

In 1992 the company was acquired by David Price, who developed the business significantly and helped drive national growth, with the floatation in 1996 leading to a concentrated focus on expanding the product range. The access rental specialist, which forms part of Lavendon Group plc, makes it its core duty to deliver the best powered access solutions to their customers by operating with

“We provide platforms suitable for a whole range of applications for anybody working at heights between three and 84 metres and the equipment is popular with professionals from a cross-section of industries. From a construction perspective there’s a lot of purpose for powered access platforms; cladders, painters, ceiling fixers and mechanical and electrical contractors all benefit from using these machines. Other markets to benefit include sign erection, maintenance, telecommunications and the media, as we have worked on many feature films, dramas and high level sports events.” The company also provides a range of working at height training which includes accredited IPAF, PASMA, IOSH and Health & Safety courses. Its training division was born on the back of the demand for additional support upon renting specialist equipment. The courses include range from harness inspection to managing sites with access platforms as well as familiarisation training, tool-box talks and operator training on specific access platforms in its fleet. A dedicated training centre in Scotland has already exceeded expectations despite being opened just last year. The company

London College uses Cygnus Wireless Fire Alarm System during building development Cygnus system and an alert sent to security staff who called the fire brigade to attend and put the fire out. Contractors BAM were thankful that the alarm system worked so well, with the wireless Cygnus system co-ordinating many work areas with different devices. Development at Westminster Kingsway College, a further education college in the heart of central London, has seen the creation of more space and the re-fitting of existing areas in the college. During this construction work, contractors BAM Construction Ltd have employed some 200 Bull Products’ Cygnus wireless fire alarm devices. Linked to a central Cygnus control panel, there are 53 Cygnus call point alarms, 105 smoke detectors and 29 heat detectors, and a number of interface units which link with a new fire alarm system installed in the existing building. The Cygnus alarm system certainly came into its own recently, when fires started in two separate parts of the construction area. The first event was a power surge causing a fire in one of the classrooms which was spotted visually by one of the electricians who raised a fire alert through manually operating the Bull Products’ system.

The Cygnus wireless fire alarm system is a major innovation for construction sites and has been designed and developed in conjunction with major construction companies to incorporate all the features required for larger construction projects. The Cygnus system is able to link no less than 480 units in 15 different zones. Individual units may be either a fire alarm call point, first aid alert point, smoke detector, heat detector or a combined call point and first aid alert alarm. Door & Window Specialist of the Year

Building Product Solutions: Manufacturer of Quality Windows North’s leading window manufacturers. “The whole team have worked incredibly hard, not just over the past twelve months, but the entire six years since we started. We really couldn’t have got to where we are today without our team. Myself and Managing Director Ian Harrison work incredibly hard when recruiting to ensure we have the right people around us, and our growth gives us all the evidence we need to know we hired the right people.”

Building and Construction Review is incredibly pleased to present Building Product Solutions with its highly coveted Door & Window Specialist of the Year profile. Despite being set up during the double dip recession in 2009, founders Ian Harrison and Lynne Darwin have managed to grow the company on a consistent basis, to the degree where they have achieved themselves the status as one of the fastest growing window manufacturers in the UK. Building Product Solutions was formed to accommodate a gap in the market which was made ever prominent when suppliers, struggling to keep up with the financial demand of business, kept going bust. The enterprise actively strived to combat the economic hurdles by providing an unparalleled level of service, delivering solutions of a superior value and quality. The business, which is located in Rotherham, specialises in the manufacture, distribution and installation of bespoke windows and doors. Every component is strategically designed to fit builders’ architectural plans, regardless of the property size and style. This flexibility has enabled the industry experts to secure a number of high profile contracts wins with house builders such as Persimmon, Taylor Wimpey, Larkfleet, Harron Homes and Gleeson, boasting a £14.2m order book and presence on 165 sites throughout England. Significant growth has taken the team on an excitingly progressive path, seeing turnover increase by a remarkable 60% and staff numbers almost doubling all within the past 12 months. 2015 also saw the opening of its new glass plant; a 3,500sqft facility which brings the entire fabrication process in house to optimise reliability, efficiency and output control. A further 7,000sqft extension (currently in

10

planning) will house a distribution unit, further increasing capacity by allowing the company to hold stock. Lynne Darwin, Sales Director at Building Product Solutions, outlined the company’s successes, particularly whilst referencing to this significant milestone: “It’s no secret that the manufacturing sector has faced tough challenges in the past few years, but with our investment we were determined to come out on top. The glass plant puts us in the perfect position to capitalise on the growing confidence within our sector. The expansion will cut costs by around 20%. We’re also able to reduce lead times – improving on what was already one of the best in the industry.” The organisation stands out because of its swift production and delivery processes; the average industry turnaround time is up to six weeks, whilst Building Product Solutions can complete the job in five working days for cavity closers and ten for glazed frames.

Other renowned strengths come in the form of exceptional customer service, an operational fleet of liveried vehicles (newly invested in), and the development of a bespoke piece of on-site software – all of which are key assets making the company more reliable and efficient than ever. It’s important to note that these extraordinary efforts haven’t been left unrewarded. Building Product Solutions has duly received recognition for preferred supplier status with Persimmon Homes across Yorkshire and the North East, and over the past year the group have been shortlisted for eight awards, scooping two and currently waiting on the outcome of four more.

To conclude: the future is looking very bright for Building Product Solutions, what with its further investments planned in its facility, machinery, processes and people. Further developments include the completion of a contemporary open plan working area for the administration and support departments, along with offices, meeting rooms and a well-equipped canteen. This next growth phase, which has prompted a projected forecast of £5.6 million for 2015/16 and a busy order book, will only help to validate the brand as a reputable nationwide industry leader. “The association with a leading house builder such as Persimmon Homes is one we’re very proud to have,” Lynne continued. “It really pushes us to the forefront of supplying to the new build sector and further cements our position as one of the

Air source replaces ground source at Northeast Eco Centre display, helping to ensure that the award-winning project has become an exemplar of sustainability. “The ground source system had worked well but it was getting on a bit, so Groundwork took the decision to replace it with an air source system,” explains Jason Oakes, Business Development Director of Oakes Energy, who installed the four Ecodan units.

(Pictured) Groundwork’s Andrew Watts (left) and Jason Oakes of Oakes Energy standing next to the four Ecodan air source heat pumps.

When the pioneering Hebburn Eco Centre needed to replace its 20-year-old ground source heating, the building’s owners turned to a cascade air source heat pump system from Mitsubishi Electric. Designed and built by Groundwork South Tyneside and Newcastle (STAN) and opened in 1996, the Eco Centre was a pioneering venture to demonstrate renewable technologies and sustainable design. Today the Eco Centre remains one of Europe’s most sustainable buildings. The building is the Groundwork Trust's headquarters, which has a mission to support local

communities and therefore also lets out 16 office spaces, as well as daily hire of its Board and Conference rooms. The office complex was originally built with a very green ethos in mind, with all materials recycled from sustainable sources, including re-used bricks from a demolished factory, an aluminium roof resmelted from old drink cans, wood from farmed forests and woollen carpets. It also has high levels of insulation to reduce the amount of energy needed to heat the building and keep the occupants warm. Electricity is generated by an onsite wind turbine and photovoltaic

“What they needed though, was a new system that could work with the existing infrastructure and one that could cope with a variable demand for heating throughout the year.” Oakes Energy worked with Minden Wood Consultants to find an ideal solution, which turned out to be four Ecodan 14kW air source heat pumps working together in a cascade system. “We looked at all the available options and the Mitsubishi Electric solution combined the best performance available with the complete flexibility needed for the building’s multi-occupant use,” said Consultant Nick Harley of Minden Wood Consultants.

size from 30sq m to 104sq m. The Eco Centre conference room is renowned as an excellent training venue and is used by both external companies and the various Groundwork STAN teams. The building’s beautifully airy Atrium, complete with internal water feature, also provides a calm environment for impromptu meetings and networking, as well as being a relaxing place to have lunch.

friendly to its core and a place where people who hold these strong working beliefs come together. “It was a landmark building when constructed and it remains so today, but to ensure it continues to leave the most positive environmental footprint possible has meant a change to the heating system and a more modern upgrade.

All offices have wall mounted trunking including power points and can be adapted for data points. The building has communal kitchens on both the ground and first floor.

“The added benefit of using the Ecodan system is that it offers greater control for individual offices and also qualifies for the non-domestic Renewable Heat Incentive, so this can help supplement the running costs for the next 20 years.”

Andrew Watts, Executive Director of Groundwork South Tyneside and Newcastle, said, “Groundwork is built on a foundation of creating sustainable, vibrant and ‘green’ communities through programmes that educate and inspire.

The Trust has been working for over 30 years supporting the communities across the UK and with the installation of the new Ecodan system, Groundwork STAN and its Eco Centre is ready for the challenges yet to come.

“Our Eco Centre has always represented the embodiment of these ideal, being environmentally

Your Entry Experts for 2016

An international leader in entry solutions Royal Boon Edam International BV is an international leader in entry solutions based in the Netherlands. The story behind the brand is actually a rather remarkable one: what initially began as a humble carpenter’s shop in Holland managed to grow so rapidly that it has now acquired a reputable status as a globally-recognised mobility hotspot authority with over 140 years of experience. Forming a UK subsidiary in 1985, Boon Edam is a familyrun business that explicitly concentrates on bringing innovative mobility concepts to life in order to ease the efficiency of movement within a whole host of buildings. A large number of offices, educational establishments, airports, government bodies, hotels, restaurants, retail stores, finance & data centres, corporate headquarters and healthcare facilities have all reaped the benefits of working with the ISO 9001 accredited company. Boon Edam’s National Sales Manager Andrew Hamilton was keen to tell us more about the work they do and the role they take in shaping the structures of building entrances across the construction industry, “We are the largest revolving door company in the world!” he exclaimed. “As specialists, we boast the largest portfolio and therefore find ourselves in a unique position within the marketplace. We have a number of competitors, but they are unable to do what we can on a collective level.

As an international leader in entry solutions, Royal Boon Edam International BV has dominated the entry industry for over 140 years. As a family owned business, Royal Boon Edam initially began as a carpenter’s shop in Holland, but with rapid progression and soaring success that ensued, the humble establishment quickly turned into a globallyrenowned mobility hotspot authority. Boon Edam Ltd formed as the UK subsidiary in 1985 and focuses explicitly on bringing innovative mobility concepts to life in order to ease the efficiency of movement within a variety of buildings. As an ISO 9001 accredited company Boon Edam Ltd creates suitable solutions for offices, educational establishments, airports, government bodies, hotels, restaurants, retail stores, finance & data centres, corporate headquarters and healthcare facilities. As the largest revolving door company in the world, Boon Edam boasts the largest portfolio of clients and projects and therefore holds a unique position within the marketplace. Despite having a number of strong competitors offering similar products, it is clear that no other company can do what we can on a collective level, due to our historial level of expertise and in-depth knowledge. A unique aspect of Boon Edam Ltd is that everything

is done internally to allow for a greater control over operations. No external contractors are used and all processes (the manufacture, design, supply, service and warranty) are covered in-house. Our well established team of engineers, project managers and sales staff are extremely technical and make it their priority to understand clients’ key requirements – we don’t just provide standard items, we create products suitable for individual applications. Boon Edam’s product range can be split into two categories: revolving doors and low level & high level security products (in the form of security doors & portals, speed gates, tripod turnstiles, full height turnstiles, barriers and access gates). Our services extend to the modernisation of current products with retrofits and upgrades.

“Everything here is done internally, so we have a greater control over operations. Our well established team of engineers, project managers and sales staff are extremely technical and make it their priority to understand clients’ key requirements – we don’t just provide standard items, we create products suitable for individual applications.” Effectively offering two product categories - revolving doors and low level & high level security

products (in the form of security doors & portals, speed gates, tripod turnstiles, full height turnstiles, barriers and access gates) – Boon Edam also has the capability to modernise current products with stylish yet functional retrofits and upgrades. “We have worked on many high profile projects, having completed commissions on landmarks such London’s Shard and the Gherkin,” an enthused Andrew commented when asked about the company’s clientele and previously notable commissions. “Essentially providing products for the majority of large commercial buildings within the country means it is almost guaranteed that you will walk through a Boon Edam door at some point in your life!” Boon Edam has previously worked to finalise projects for the Bahrain International Circuit (Bahrain), the New Century Global Center (China), the Amsterdam Arena (the Netherlands), TNT Green Office (the Netherlands), Miu Miu (worldwide), the Waterfront Hotel (Sweden), Burj Khalifa (Dubai) and the RTL Group (Germany) – these are just a few examples of the significant work the team have carried out. It’s important to note that Boon Edam strives to work in as

ecologically-friendly a manner as possible. According to Andrew, this sustainable approach is one of the organisation’s main distinguishing characteristics that make them stand out from their competitors in the sector, “Two years ago we attended Ecobuild to launch the NRG plus, the first revolving door that turns human energy into kinetic energy,” he explained. “The push motion (activated by individuals pressing the door) powers a light, which is an energy-saving feature in itself due to the fact it’s only visible when in use. “Not only does a revolving door lessen the carbon footprint and reduce carbon emissions from the building, it will also see a return on the customer’s investment. This shows the incredible worth of our products as well as our dedication to being environmentally aware.” Conclusively, it is inevitable that entrances effectively shape visitors’ first impressions of a building – as it essentially acts as the gateway enabling them access to their chosen destination – so why should you settle for second best when choosing the doors, barriers and turnstiles for your premises? Selecting only the greatest and most reliable products for installation should be your key priority if you want to impress those coming into close proximity with your business.

To date, Boon Edam Ltd has been involved in many high profile projects, having completed commissions on landmarks such London’s Shard, the Gherkin and the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. By providing products for the majority of large commercial buildings within the UK means it is almost guaranteed that you will walk through a Boon Edam door at some point in your life!

Able to handle all types of fine dusts and materials created during the course of construction techniques such as cutting concrete, sanding, grinding and drilling floors and walls, the DC Tromb combines power, robustness and efficiency with versatility. It’s ability to handle high volumes of dust alongside its mobility makes it particularly useful for floor grinding. James Miller, Dustcontrol UK’s General Manager, commented: “The Tromb is a fantastic new addition to our range. It’s the most powerful single phase extractor that we’ve ever produced, which means it’s able to handle large quantities of dust with ease whilst also being highly mobile, making it perfect for use in areas and for tasks where both mobility and power is essential.” Due to its compact design, the DC

Tromb is both easy to move on the job and easy to transport. As well as floor grinders, the machine can be connected to handheld tools such as cutting machines, chisel hammers and saws, enabling it to be used for a variety of on-site extraction needs. As standard the machine is equipped with a patented semi automatic reverse pulse filter cleaning system and an HEPA 13 filter. It is built to Application Class H, unlike many other products, which are only M class standard. The use of H13 filters guarantees 99.97% capture of all particles greater than 0.3 microns meaning air exhausted from the Tromb is the cleanest it can be. A signal lamp shows when it’s time to clean the filter.

Wickens go above and beyond manufacturing storage solutions. They also offer additional services, such as full site surveys, CAD layout drawings for approval, structural calculations, risk assessments, method statements, installation and ongoing maintenance and safety checks. Father and Son Team Solve Mobile Phone Problem A Somerset construction worker who was fed up with having to fight over 240v sockets in site offices to try to charge up his phone has got together with his father and the pair have designed and produced 110v site power supply equipment with built in USB Ports. The patented system, designed by John and Aaron Philpott offers three products to begin with – a 110v 4 Way Splitter Box with 4 built in USB Ports and 1.5mm2 and 2.5mm2 110v Extension Leads, also with USB Ports. These days it is not just phones that need charging up – ultra thin notebooks, tablets, e-cigarettes, surveyors equipment and many other items now charge from USB ports. The new products have been designed so that there is at least one USB Port for every 110v socket so all workers can enjoy having their mobile devices powered without sacrificing a socket to run power tools. News of the new products, which are sold under the brand JUST110, is spreading fast and they are already available at
