London College uses Cygnus Mirka’s Clean Commitment Wireless Fire Alarm System to Dust-Free Building and during Building Development Decorating Development at Westminster Kingsway College, a further education college in the heart of central London, has seen the creation of more space and the refitting of existing areas in the college. During this construction work, contractors BAM Construction Ltd have employed some 200 Bull Products’ Cygnus wireless fire alarm devices. Linked to a central Cygnus control panel, there are 53 Cygnus call point alarms, 105 smoke detectors and 29 heat detectors, and a number of interface units which link with a new fire alarm system installed in the existing building. The Cygnus alarm system certainly came into its own recently, when fires started in two separate parts of the construction area. The first event was a power surge causing a fire in one of the classrooms which was spotted visually by one of the electricians who raised a fire alert through manually operating the Bull Products’ system. In a second event, fire broke
The recent research published by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors regarding ‘dangerous dust emissions’ potentially being linked to heart disease and cancer, highlighted the clouds of ‘hidden’ microscopic particles created during sanding and drilling and called for health & safety regulations to be updated to protect builders, decorators and amateur DIY enthusiasts. In its new ‘Our Clean Commitments’ Sustainability Report being unveiled this week, Mirka is focusing on its four strategic pillars of Clean Proactivity, Clean Partner, Clean Production and Clean Performance to reinforce its commitment to provide the most effective surface finishing preparation tools and systems to customers, spearheaded by its dust-free solutions.
out in the UPS room and this was automatically detected by the Cygnus system and an alert sent to security staff who called the fire brigade to attend and put the fire out. Contractors BAM were thankful that the alarm system worked so well, with the wireless Cygnus system co-ordinating many work areas with different devices.
As part of the ‘Mirka Way’ company philosophy, the company works closely with customers, business partners and employees to ensure sustainability is built into every aspect of the product development process. This ensures the minimum amount of emissions,

Sundolitt XPS – Provides strength and stability in sustainable green roof A state-of-the art green roof is set to provide warmth and protection as well as a perfect natural environment for flora and fauna in a new £8million community care centre in picturesque Darley Dale in Derbyshire. And at the heart of the inverted ‘green roof’ solution is Sundolitt XPS, the extreme strength, extruded polystyrene sheet designed to provide high insulation levels, strength and rigidity. The UK’s leading independent green roof installer, BBS Green Roofing Ltd, was briefed to provide and install the high-tech yet natural roofing solution for the Meadow View Community Care Centre. It is a new facility from Derbyshire County Council and includes 16 long-term specialist residential care beds, 16 short-term beds aimed at helping people return home after respite care and rehabilitation and a 20 place day centre, café and health and well-being zone. Given the location in the Derwent valley close to the edge of the Peak District National Park, the project needed to reflect the outstanding natural environment in Darley Dale and the inverted roof design incorporating Sundolitt XPS is the natural solution according to BBS Managing Director, Scott Manhood, “We’ve been garden designers for more than 30 years and the last twenty of those have seen us developing green roofing and walling solutions across the UK. The use of XPS
in a project like this means we can incorporate a strong sub structure whilst at the same time achieving high levels of thermal protection. It’s an ideal material for the job and, together with the other specialist materials, enables us to give a 20 year Insurance-backed guarantee that covers the green roof, insulation and all other parts of the roofing system.” Sundolitt XPS is manufactured in a wide range of thicknesses and sheet sizes, the primary range having a thermal conductivity of 0.033 – 0.037W/mK (EN 13164). According to the type of use, it achieves outstanding compression resistance from 200 – 700kPa (EN826) and offers exceptionally low moisture absorption through its closed-pore system – making it an ideal thermal insulator for a wide range of commercial and domestic construction applications. It is available

professionalism and quality is paramount in everything we do. “With the word: ‘Environmental’ in our name you might think we are very green, but to the contrary there is a very ‘grey’ end to environmental, which is where you find us; helping our clients to comply with Regulations. We do provide niche services to particular industries such as asbestos air testing and waste management compliance checks, but any reader might find us doing a Legionella Risk Assessment, conducting an Asbestos Survey or checking on Occupational Noise. “We understand that inspection and testing, which is what our services come down to, is not what our clients really care about, but have to accept as a necessity, which sometimes involves bad news. We want to demonstrate to our clients that unlike our competitors we can do a job we are proud of as efficiently and politely as possible.” Bradley Environmental’s services benefit anyone who has a building or conducts anything other than office work. Some of their customers include local government and the NHS and they supply training for National Grid. Other household names the company supply services to include Greene King, Spar shops, Mondelez (Cadbury) and Dominos Pizza. Newly introduced is the company’s ‘Safety Assured’ brand, designed to efficiently and effectively cover a range of clients’ needs.

When asked to discuss the company’s plans for the future, Peter concluded, “Whilst our competitors in London have enjoyed steady progress through the last six years, in the Midlands, North and Wales the economic downturn has affected our clients. However, with economic recovery our clients are much more confident and we are enjoying the opportunity to grow rapidly in this improved market.
“Having been in the industry for 25 years, we feel we have built up the knowledge and experience to provide clients with expert corporate support services. With an experienced team of consultants and technical staff, we aim to provide excellence in our field and aim to exceed client expectations. Whatever the size of your company, whether a large multi-site organisation or a single-site family run business, we can tailor our solutions to meet your needs at a realistic cost.”

The Nation’s Arboriculturalist The largest privately owned arboricultural company in the UK, Gristwood and Toms, was founded by Dave Gristwood and Andy Toms in 1969. The widely recognised industry experts operate on a national basis from 9 depots dotted across the country: Hertfordshire, South London, West London, Portsmouth, Hastings, Basingstoke, Bristol, Nottingham and a yet to be opened base in Manchester. Gristwood and Toms provide reliable development site surveys, conducting reports and assessments meeting the requirements of British Standard 5837:2012. Its dedicated professional consultancy division identifies specimens suitable for retention and ensures any planning restrictions or conditions applied to trees onsite are met accordingly. The contracting department, meanwhile, implements the report recommendations and provides the necessary tree and vegetation removal services, and the specialist tree planting division pride themselves on offering ongoing aftercare and maintenance support. “In essence, we are a one-stop-shop for anything to do with trees,” commented Darren Kilby, Head of Sales & Marketing at Gristwood and Toms. “We have the unique ability and the resources to undertake the most challenging operations, regardless of scale and complexity, anywhere in the country. We are the only contractor that is able to mobilise such a significant number of professional arborists, large plant and equipment and resources to complete projects quickly, safely and with minimal disruption to the public. We are masters of our trade, real tree people with a nononsense approach. “We understand that traditional arboriculture services need to evolve in order to successfully meet the modern commercial expectations and processes. We are different because we tailor our services according to our customers’ needs and priorities;
we employ new ways of thinking and working – partnering with our customers to successfully solve their problems.” Gristwood and Toms is currently in the process of marketing a new variety of products. One particular innovation that has been making waves in the marketplace is its exclusively distributed tree watering bag, an item developed specifically to save customers’ money, time, water and trees. These incredibly useful bags are the most effective and efficient way to water newly planted trees and have proven to be more cost-effective than manual methods and increasingly popular with local authority customers and landscape architects. The slow-release tree watering bag reduces transplant shock, prompts deeper root growth and can be installed easily within minutes. “Our primary focus is to ensure that our existing customers continue to receive the high level of service they expect and demand from us,” Darren said when asked about the company’s future plans. “Last year, we invested a significant sum of money into our IT infrastructure and into skills development for our people at all levels to help us to ensure resilience in a highly competitive market. “Tree work is a hazardous occupation; choosing a company without the necessary competence can lead to injury to people, prosecution, substantial fines or damage to property and the tree; not to mention irreparable harm to reputation. Gristwood and Toms have the professional skills, experience and national coverage to give complete peace of mind when placing the care of trees in our hands. Our customers know that they can appoint us and relax, because we are the UK’s largest tree services network.” T +44 (0)3458 731500 info@GristwoodandToms.co.uk www.gristwoodandtoms.co.uk Video links: https://vimeo.com/122534851 https://vimeo.com/117804671

In the early days, plaster was mixed in a bucket using a stick, the task was laborious and the plaster was often lumpy. Later a bike gear wheel was attached to the stick which was a great improvement and removed most of the lumps but often left a compacted layer of plaster at the bottom of the bucket which often spoiled the mix. In the 1980's the electric whisk started appearing on building sites which gave the plasterers the edge and produced a smoother plaster quicker. IT’S HERE, The Block Paving Weed Inhibitor Retailers have been waiting for How Danish company Dansand® is helping Brits win ‘The War on Weeds’ Gardeners and landscapers looking to get rid of stubborn weeds in patio, light-traffic driveway, or pathway paving joints tend to do two things: 1) try a cheap weed-inhibiting product bought from a shop or online to do the job, and then after applying it 2) quickly give up on it all in frustration (or rather exasperation!) once they see the poor results – how weeds soon quickly reappear meaning that the whole exercise has proved a complete waste of time and money. The good news is that now Danish manufacturer, Dansand®, has created a range of three unquestionably effective NO WEEDTM products (available to buy in bulk) that look set to finally give UK home-owners and professionals the weedinhibiting power they have for so long craved. The products are becoming increasingly popular with retailers, garden centres and landscaping companies across the UK, and it’s all because of the awesome results achieved.
Paving and 3) NO WEED™ Flexible Paving Joint Filler Dansand is both suitable for use in new and existing Joints All three are environmentallyfriendly, natural and durable, and are the ideal choice for people seeking to repoint and repair block paving, concrete slabs, and flagstones, quickly and with ease. But it's not just about speed and convenience. Dansand® NO WEED™ products leave jointstrengthened patios, drives and pathways looking smart and clean, thanks to the easy-onthe-eye desert sand-colour and the stylish anthracite-hue finish achieved once all wide and narrow joints have been correctly filled. What's more, the materials are ready to use 'straight out of the bag' and customers are left with a neat and tidy job, every time.
Three powerful products that genuinely work The Dansand® product range is extensively tested and already proven, and includes:
Dansand's® NO-WEEDS Principle. How it works Light-coloured Dansand® NO WEEDTM Block Paving Sand really does look set to change the way people repoint and repair granite and concrete paving forever. The secret to its unmatched efficacy is in the mixture of naturally alkaline oven-dried, nutrient-rich minerals packed into every easy to stack and transport bag.

condition is created that keeps weeds controlled in a natural way. That's right. There are no chemicals involved (always a HUGE reason to buy for DIY/Home Improvement store customers), and, crucially, weeds will remain inhibited even during long spells of rain. No other weed-inhibiting product on the market can offer consumers that. Like Dansand® NO WEED block
paving sand, Dansand® NO WEED stone dust for paving and Dansand® NO WEED Flexible Paving Joint Filler are also waterpermeable, give joints strength, and are almost inconceivably effective in preventing weeds, bird droppings and insects from spreading between paving joints. Roofing News
At the heart of roofing The Federation’s roots date all the way back to 1892, when a team of slate merchants and slaters congregated in York to attend a meeting organised by James Townsley, a slater from Hull. The purpose of the gathering was to devise a national association and over 120 years later the success of this particular occasion is imminent, as the resulting NFRC is now a wellestablished nationwide roofing trade body. Effectively weathering two world wars and many economic upheavals, NFRC currently represents over 70% of the roofing industry by both value and volume and
boasts a membership with over 1000 trade members and 180 supplier members (manufacturers, merchants and service providers) to its name. It also provides support to its affiliate membership base, which is comprised of roof training groups, training centres and colleges that offer roof training. “NFRC’s primary aim is to promote quality contractors and quality products, ensuring that its members
are at the forefront of all roofing developments,” explained Ray Horwood, NFRC Chief Executive. “Our philosophy is to promote trade members, assisting them in gaining more work and through this achievement, to help supplier members to sell more products and collectively to achieve quality installation. thereafter. As well as satisfactory training records, inspections of past contracts are made to verify quality craft skills and technical competence.”
“Through using the services of an NFRC member, clients get free access to expertise from NFRC Technical Managers including receiving health and safety advice. All member contractors are rigorously vetted in their chosen roofing disciplines before joining and every three years
Covering all of the key roofing disciplines (such as single ply, sheeting and cladding, heritage and solar), NFRC’s main aim is to encourage the highest level of workmanship and best practice, whilst allowing trade members to remain compliant with industry standards. They provide technical advice for members and their customers, and frequently run committee meetings and dedicated focus groups to discuss any upcoming developments which may affect the ever-increasing market.

Inta goes HIPER for heat interface units
Five ways a Tubosider Access Chamber could work for your project
Inta has introduced its ‘HIPER’ high performance heat interface unit (HIU), designed to deliver heating and hot water whilst improving energy efficiency and minimising costs in multi-dwelling developments.
AFTER talking to customers about the everyday challenges they face when it comes to access and chambers – and years of designing bespoke systems for them – Tubosider has decided to bite the bullet and come up with its own. National Sales Manager, Darren Crane gives us five reasons to take a look at this new product range.
Installed in shared residential buildings, the HIU distributes heating and domestic hot water from a central plant system to individual properties. By removing the need for each area to have a conventional boiler, gas flue and hot water cylinder, the interface units dramatically reduce build costs for developers. Inta has worked to develop a product that has more features and benefits than any other HIU on the market. HIPER HIU boasts a factory-set, non-electric temperature control valve which prevents risk of scalding in the event of a power supply failure, as well as features
the most advanced dual-speed PID control (patent pending) of any unit, intelligently controlling the heat into the plate heat exchangers by electronic modulation of a PICV (pressure independent control valve). A PICV is three valves in one: a differential pressure control valve, two-port flow regulating valve and a flow regulation valve. One PICV replaces three separate valves that would otherwise be required to maintain the maximum level of system control so the HIU can operate effectively. The HIPER HIU PICV valve can maintain control up to a pressure differential of 4 bar.
“THEY SAY necessity is the mother of invention. That’s definitely the case when it comes to our new, WRc approved, chamber design. The thing is, we like to make life easier for our customers. So we looked at the challenges they faced and started our design process from there. 1) They can be lifted entirely into an excavation It’s a simple yet unique design that includes an integral lifting ring secured by incorporated slinging points that are designed to remain attached to the chamber.
2) Less Labour = less health and safety headaches This simple installation and future maintenance process is much less labour intensive so it relieves a lot of the health and National Sales safety risks Manager, Darren associated Crane with installing traditional access chamber systems. 3) They’re fast and cost-effective A simple installation process can take hours, if not days, off installation time, so there’s no argument – they are more costeffective than traditional designs.

Inta introduces its best-ever magnetic filter Leading heating equipment manufacturer Inta has introduced its second-generation intaKlean magnetic filter. Designed to combat contamination problems caused by rogue particles in fluidbased heating systems, the intaKlean 2 is the first of its kind to feature a double gauze filter, which actively captures and keeps hold of non-ferrous debris, as well as eliminating trapped air. As fluid circulates around the filter body, nonferrous foreign matter is caught and retained in the gauze, while the remaining ferrous debris is drawn to the centre of the filter and captured by the powerful neodymium magnet. The intaKlean 2’s full bore butterfly valves allow for convenient in-line installation without restricting water flow, and the magnet can be removed while the system is live for effortless cleaning. Its anti-blockage design guarantees continuous flow even if the filter has not been serviced. Responding to feedback received from plumbers and installers about the original model, the intaKlean 2 is Inta’s best filter to date and features a host of developments over the first generation including a reduced overall footprint, making it one of the smallest on the market, a 360 degree fully-rotatable filter pot for flexible access, and a low profile drain valve making it easy to fit and service. Speaking of the manufacturer’s commitment to product development, Managing Director
14
Stuart Gizzi, said, “We’re proud to introduce the intaKlean 2 to the market. We worked closely with plumbers and installers – the people who actually work with it – to see how we could make our original intaKlean better, and we identified the need for a stronger, more effective filter that is versatile and can be serviced with greater ease, and so we went back to the drawing board and developed the intaKlean 2.” To find out more about Inta and its range of heating and plumbing products, visit: www.intatec.co.uk or call: +44 (0)1889 272180 for more information.

4) They’re delivered ready to install We already design, assemble and factory fit all our tanks with any required access shafts, ladders, inlet and outlet connections so it made absolute sense to apply this innovation to access chambers. They’re fabricated to order in our factory, from galvanised steel and delivered to site ready to install. 5) The WRc accredited installation guide Our design team has been seeking customer feedback, working with the WRc and tweaking the design for over 18 months now. We’ve produced an easy-tofollow WRc accredited installation guide to help save even more time and resource.” Call Tubosider on: +44 (0)1744 452900 to talk to us about our new chamber design. The world’s only fully covered AV & Power Point Building and Construction Review is incredibly proud to tell you more about Sync-box, the exciting innovation that has shot to even greater success after appearing on the hit television programme Dragons’ Den (aired on BBC). The completely unique recessed power and AV socket
was developed in response to the problems surfacing with the advancement of slim line television sets: the home entertainment market has seen an increase in lighter screens and smaller brackets, which in essence allows the TV’s to be placed more closely to the wall, but doesn’t accommodate the connected wires. The power and audio/visual leads remain stuffed awkwardly behind the machine and the cables end up protruding unattractively, ruining the stylish effect of the new set. The Sync-box combats this issue – as the first ever recessed power point to be manufactured, the slender product is designed around a standard double socket space to minimise structural changes and enable a better fit whilst installing wall-mounted flat screen televisions. This ingenious concept was devised and developed by Steve Noyes and Duncan Summers, two friends enthusiastic about the AV industry and frustrated about the obstacles involved with flat screen installation. The subsequent prototype – named Sync-box – swiftly became a global phenomenon as 3,000 units were sold

businessmen were successful in their application and spent a challenging day under the close scrutiny of the Dragons. Despite receiving tough feedback, the experience proved to be both an important learning curve and an invaluable business opportunity: “Since appearing in the Den, the phone and email enquiries have exploded,” Duncan commented. “We have received multiple calls from various distributors world-wide; we are currently talking to a large distributor based in Dubai whom approached us after seeing the show. This is with regard to supplying Sync-box to three brand new Trump Hotels in India and one in Dubai!

Global Leaders Flexible Couplings, Drainage & Plumbing Systems
Developing a Delivery Management Strategy for your Construction Sites
Puddle flanges from the UK’s leading coupling manufacturer, Flexseal, have played their part in the expansion of world-class attraction, Chester Zoo. Crown House Technologies, the services arm of the project’s contractor Laing O’Rourke, first specified the puddle flanges within the ventilation system for the new Indonesian jungle house. They were so impressed they further specified the product for the water system of the new animal pools.
To adopt a good delivery management strategy, we found most workers required a system to help manage these key areas for them; to tick the health and safety boxes and take the hassle out of implementation so they can get on with what they do best – the building work itself.

For hygienic indoor air – CERTO Air Humidifiers Thermal Energy Components (TEC UK Ltd), a division of Klingenburg GmbH, are revolutionising the way in which healthy ambient air is supplied in buildings. CERTO Air Humidifiers offer a high performance, low consumption solution with patented technology that offers a clean, yet exceptionally maintenance-friendly solution. The components: vortex-generating and nozzle system (1), post-evaporator (2), agglomerator (3) and high-pressure pump station (4) are optimally matched to air handling units, guaranteeing best integration into systems.
Turning Old into New Due to its old fashioned glamour and vintage beauty, the designers of this new restaurant wanted to create a lasting impression right from the start by incorporating an authentic looking entrance to this chic new eatery.
Andrew Patch, Country Manager of UK & Ireland, TEC UK Ltd, said, “CERTO represents hygienic and safe air humidification. It meets all the hygiene requirements set out by the Association of German Engineers and does so without using chemicals such as silver ions.”
As experts in the field of entrance design, Boon Edam were chosen by the restaurant designers to design, manufacture and install a traditional-style entry way which would also be fitting for the modern world. The bespoke revolving door was entirely hand made out of timber with a power assisted drive and an additional collapsible door set added to allow for the passing of bulky items and larger items of luggage. This prestigious door design was chosen by the designer for many reasons. Due to its prominent position in Piccadilly, London, the architects were tasked with creating a statement entrance piece which would also ooze a quintessential look and feel which would, in turn, blend in with the overall quintessentially English theme of the department store. The revolving door was also a first choice option as a way of overcoming
with or without the main MSite system if you don’t already have this installed.
The CERTO is available as a complete unit with housing, or alternatively, as an element
that can be installed in any air-conditioners, making it the ideal solution as a retrofit or for upgrading existing systems. TEC UK is the leading UK supplier of components for air handling systems. Their highly innovative products, including thermal wheels, plate heat exchangers and gas burners, make significant contributions toward saving energy resources and reducing CO2 emissions. Hauraton BIM family now online the great British weather of cold winds and wet weather! Typically, a revolving door can eliminate the amount of cold air that enters a building during its use and rivals that of a more traditional swing door which lacks any control of draughts during cold spells. Experts in Design As a world leader in entry design, our client opted to work with Boon Edam Ltd whose reputation is synonymous with reliability and quality. Like Fortnum & Mason, the Boon Edam brand is long standing and internationally recognised for providing its customers with the quality workmanship that they’ve come to expect over the years. As a unique company which started life in designing wooden revolving doors back in 1873, our client knew that Boon Edam Ltd were more than experienced in this field. Having initially discussed their needs and expectations and by providing examples of previous timber based revolving doors, Boon Edam were able to easily supply the client with a design they were after. Customisation and Communication Putting our client at the forefront of this project, Boon Edam ensured that all communication was thorough throughout the entire design and manufacture stages of this project and that clear communication was continued right through to
completion. By working closely with our client, we were able to ensure that all design needs were met at every step of the process. It was obvious during the early stages that certain aspects such as lead times, costs and material matching could potentially cause problems for the designer but Boon Edam helped to alleviate these concerns and kept communications open during the whole process. A unique aspect of this working relationship was the option given for the client to visit the Boon Edam factory based in the Netherlands. This gave a further opportunity for our client to view the bespoke door product as a completed product prior to it being delivered to the UK. It also gave the architects the opportunity to get a clearer idea of what was being provided and to allow for any changes that needed to be made before being dispatched. Due to the impeccable communication and seamless working relationship between supplier and client, the installation of this majestic product was turned around in less than 5 months, leaving both the architects and Boon Edam Ltd delighted with the results. Protecting all Air Movement Systems Prevention is better than cure as they say, or in industrial maintenance terms condition monitoring is more effective than failure maintenance.
Well-maintained equipment costs less to operate, ensures optimal life expectancy and maximises energy efficiencies. Furthermore, ensuring that your HVAC equipment delivers consistent high-level performance alleviates the need for unnecessary servicing and warranty claims.
Costly HVAC equipment can be correctly maintained while reducing expensive maintenance schedules, simply by fitting the unique RABScreen external filter.
Fitting external RABScreen filters to existing and new HVAC systems will help prevent expensive repairs. RABScreen filters work by protecting existing prefiltration devices, and also those areas where traditional filters are not practical, such as chillers or cooling towers, from various types of airborne debris.
Businesses are wasting thousands of pounds each year due to inefficient air-handling systems that require replacement or frequent maintenance. This can have significant cost implications for any business’s profitability. For every 1,000 tonnes of refrigeration capacity, consuming 750kW of compressor energy, an additional £31.50 per hour or £63,000 per annum is incurred from inefficient systems based upon 2,000 hours service. Higher operating pressures and temperatures will occur if airhandling equipment is required to use more energy and operate for longer cycle times in order to maintain normal operating levels.
By creating a static charge that attracts and traps airborne particulates, the RABScreen prevent sensitive components such as evaporators and cooling and condenser coils from contamination, without restricting airflow through the equipment. Behind the scenes at Berendsen Berendsen is a company that can be best described in one word as a ‘chameleon’ of sorts – evolving and adapting to the requirements of the garment and textiles industry to present a solid and rounded offering for its customers in today’s challenging climate.
With an estimated 15-20% share in the Europe Rental market already, the company have a strong foothold from which to grow and currently manufacture an estimated 2 million garments per year. Across the UK currently the company operates from 14 sites in total dedicated to workwear, with additional sites services the company’s main other sectors, Heath and Food and Catering. Globally, this spans to a staggering 55 plants in use cementing a very broad worldwide perspective.
Kick-starting this new sense of identity with a new company name with the appointment of a new CEO back in 2013, the company also shed its shackles of the familiarly of the ‘Sunlight Group’ name and focused on presenting a much more rounded offering for end users, as ‘Europe’s leading textile service group.’ Today, Berendsen are proud to present themselves as a full supplier and service solution, offering both a supply element in workwear which is further supported by a laundering and service care support system. This full garment rental and care service is completely unique, offering a real point of difference to competitors. For customers today, Berendsen can not only supply a suitable
workwear solution that meets the required standards and brief on the job, but can care and maintain it to ensure it protects most effectively for its wearers and gain maximum wear for clients.
Over 100 years of exemplary service Some may be familiar with the work of Berendsen under their former guise as The Davis Service Group Plc, formed in 2002 following the acquisition of Sophus Berendsen, which had textile service operations under the Berendsen brand in Scandinavia, The Netherlands, Germany and Poland. These operations were combined with the existing Davis business which had very similar operations in the UK, Ireland and Germany, providing services under the Sunlight and Spring Grove brands. On July 5th
2013 Sunlight changed its name to Berendsen UK. The name change is a formal declaration of solidary, drive and signifies ambition to grow moving forward. Both Berendsen and Davis were long-established business service companies with history dating back over a hundred years. The business today Much of the work in the past year has been to move the shift from what the company was, to what it stands for today – not just by name but by the values associated with the business. Almost operating on a unique two tier principle, Berendsen remain in the position to be able to cater for other suppliers and also end users alike, with the workwear sector noted as a core area of growth, totalling 29% of growth revenue at present across 55 plants in ten countries across Europe. UK. The company vision statement very much follows the same ethos – the company’s strengths in supply and garment care and being able to drive this supply and maintenance in its entirety ‘allows its customers to do what they do best.’ Underpinning these values is a confidence in service which is then passed onto customers who can then focus on other areas of their business. In a business which has seen significant change in recent years, these values take front and centre as an objective for all aspects of the business, working towards a unified goal. The company’s interest in supplying garment care and maintenance stems from a notable industry-wide trend in outsourcing. With today’s customer more than ever short on time, resources and yet attributing great value on a corporate image, the health and safety compliance issues of various industries, and yet still desire to create a customer made solution at a suitable cost. Built on European success From its European origins, Berendsen brings with its weight in knowledge and expertise, particularly within the workwear market. The Berendsen name holds great weight in markets such as Denmark, Norway and Sweden, holding the title of market leader. Key markets within those regions are understood to be in workwear and industrial-wipers in the Netherlands, the German hospital and nursing home market and are targeting an increase of market share in workwear in Germany. It also has established

operations in the emerging markets of Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and the Czech Republic. Within Facilities services, an expanding area of growth is floor protections mats for commercial users, reducing the dir and moisture brought into the premises and delivering a saving on overall cleaning costs. The mats business is experiencing across Europe, in the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, Norway, Poland and Sweden. A two-tiered approach to success Delivering solutions for Berendsen means being able to take the stress out of their customer’s hands, and so the business model is focused on purchasing, delivering textiles and hygiene articles and also equally managing laundry maintenance and delivery, offering full solutions tailored to the specific needs of the customer. The appeal to customers is clear: they can free up time, space, reduce staff expenditures and focus their energies back into the core elements of their individual business. As a supplier and laundry combined, the advantage in inherent understanding of both pieces of the puzzle are mutually beneficial to each other. For example, the design process considers the expectations of the long term laundry process –design and construction in workwear draws on over a decade of manufacturing garments and providing laundry services to ensure both can work in tandem successfully. All fabrics used in Berendsen workwear are tested in true-to–life simulations and ‘live’ at their own industrial sites before being implemented into garments. To date, personalised Berendsen workwear has been selected for the needs of thousands of businesses across Europe based on comfort, function, safety and long life, applying Berendsen’s additional understanding of the laundry sector inherently in the design for the best result for the customer. Features such as double front closures, ventilation pockets, embroidered symbols on garments for certification and reinforced pockets and knee pads are just a few ways in which Berendsen cater for an attention to detail in workwear deliverance. Trees and Planning: Achieving the Potential Sometimes, when a possible development site has tree-related issues, developers are deterred. On other occasions, the temptation is to clear the site and create a blank canvas. May I suggest that there is a better way? Feasibility: Before spending money on surveys and plans, establish whether a development is feasible. There may be constraints with a site, or beyond, that make development unrealistic. These can include access, topography and the type and density of surrounding property. They are often challenges beyond your control as a land owner.
Tree Constraints Plan: This assesses the trees on the site, and those within influencing distance around it. It identifies which trees contribute to the setting, and how. This exercise can identify trees that contribute to screening, or are focal features. It also informs which trees are suitable for retention; sometimes, prominent specimens lack sufficient vigour to remain. The Tree Constraints Plan informs the process. It indicates how much space each tree being retained. With this plan, I can work with clients to overcome challenges that may otherwise deter them from taking proposals forward. Working within the Root Protection Area: Planners often seek reassurance that, where trees
are involved, they will not be detrimentally affected by a proposed development. There is a commonly held view that a tree’s roots spread evenly under its’ crown. Indeed, this is often used to calculate how much space a tree being retained should have within a development. It is inevitable, when space is limited, that some developments will involve encroachment the generally sacrosanct Root Protection Area. Sometimes, there are no roots present and proposals are more readily acceptable to the local planning authority. Where there are roots, I have a range of options which can help to reassure and ensure minimal damage. Tree Preservation Orders: Getting the Details Correct: I have worked with a number of clients over recent years where Tree Preservation Orders which contained some questionable elements. These have included inaccurate boundaries, vague descriptions of what is included, so that there is uncertainty regarding what is protected, and what is not, and the inclusion of ‘trees’ of questionable merit. There is a narrow window whereby the recipient of a new Tree Preservation Order can object to it, or raise concerns. Once this window has closed, it can prove difficult getting any changes in place. You Can Always Object: Sometimes, the reason for refusal can be resolved, or may benefit from the impartial oversight of the appeals system. I encourage clients to explore this option, with a feasibility assessment. One client I have worked with wished to prune some trees that were encroaching the driveway to their home. Permission was refused due to concerns the
work could affect local dormice. The appeal inspector highlighted in his report that we were dealing with trees subject to a TPO, not dormice, protected by wildlife legislation! A recent case summary described Mark as “a very impressive and authoritative witness”. Click to find out more about our professional tree expert witness services... Tree Preservation Order (TPO) Tree preservation orders are applied by local authorities to protect trees deemed to be valuable to the environment. The trees are protected against removal and pruning. All maintenance work must be approved by the local authority and performed by accredited experts. If you are restricted by an existing TPO, or you are worried about a TPO breach, seek advice from a qualified arborist. BS5837:2012 Tree Reports Councils and local authorities often require BS5837 tree reports to support planning applications for building and developing sites with trees. The British Standard ensures national acceptance of what must be included in the tree report. The British Standards for tree reports was updated in 2012 and all reports created by Cedarwood Tree Care conform to this new standard. A BS5837:2012 report assesses the condition and contribution of trees within a site, advises on tree retention and removal and instructs on tree protection as part of the development and during construction works. Sites may have one tree or one thousand. A site survey is imperative, and getting advice on your trees early can avoid costly mistakes as the project develops.

Bulmer Brick and Tile Company is a long established family business on the site of a brick making yard dating back centuries. Bulmer bricks are made from the finest London Clays, dug continually from our own clay seams since Tudor times. All our bricks are entirely hand made using traditional methods. We specialise in restoration and conservation of old buildings; working closely with architects and contractors to produce our facing brick to the specification required for your particular building. Although we aim to have a stock of the more common sizes, dimensions and texture are made to order, so that each building receives the correct brick for the work. The kilns are unique coal fired down-draught kilns, loaded, unloaded and fired by hand in a long and labourious process, ensuring each and every brick has had our personal attention. No artificial colours, tints or dyes are used in our process. The beautiful range of colours from orange to dark red and purple comes purely from the firing process, just as it would have been over the centuries. We make a huge variety of brick specials, including terracotta, plinths, squints, decorative chimney bricks, string course bricks and over 500 different types of coping which increases on a weekly basis. All the specials are moulded from wooden moulds, which are made in our own carpentry workshop.
