Are you ready for BIM?

See on page

2010 when the UK Government Adviser on construction, Paul Morrell said BIM would play a key part in Government procurement policy. In 2011, the Government (The Cabinet Office) produced the Government Construction Strategy (GCS), and orchestrated the setup of the BIM Task Group to help deliver the objectives of the GCS. The UK is now very much at the forefront of BIM development and with construction expansion expected worldwide this demonstrates a fantastic opportunity for UK business export for ontracting, engineering and design services.

See on page

The hypotheses of the BIM Task Group is aligned with the Government’s key objective is to reduce capital cost, the carbon burden and operational expenditure of the built environment by 20%. The ‘BIM’ acronym itself may have outgrown its usefulness since Paul Morrells declaration in 2010 and whilst it may involve technology investment, it is much more about management of information and people than about buying new software.

Established in 1989, Man and Machine is part of a panEuropean group, operating in 11 countries, with over 750 staff and over 500,000 installed CAD seats. We provide expertise in digital design and data management with over 60 years of combined technical experience and extensive industry. Our specialist knowledge has allowed us to develop a wide variety of services that address the needs of our customers’ across multiple industries to enable them to design, visualise, and simulate to the highest standard. Our goal is to help you optimise your design process. Whether you are in the architecture, plant or construction industries, we have the experience to understand your business and what you are trying to achieve, and we have the expertise to enable you to do it better. It takes many activities and skills to bring the ideas and designs of Architects/Engineers to fulfilment. Building Information Modelling (BIM) attempts to standardise the creation and exchange of information to make the design, construction and operational management of a facility or infrastructure asset more efficient. It is important to note that BIM is not just about buildings, but in its wildest context is being applied to facility, building, road, railway, and infrastructure projects. It is also now very much impacting organisations throughout the supply chain including manufacturers, fabricators and interior designers.

The word ‘building’ in itself also doesn’t necessarily describe the full scope of a project – it doesn’t cover policies, assumptions, strategic decisions, supply chain, specification, user assessment, regulation and recycling sustainability. All are key parts of the projects ‘information model’ and should be included in the creation of the facility or asset information as the project progresses. For many facilities, more information will be created during the operational phase than will be created during the design and construction phases. Structuring data at the outset and quality controlling it through all phases of a project will bring tremendous benefits. BIM is often wrongly associated with just graphical (often 3D models) information. This is only partly true. All forms of correspondence form part of the model: specifications, risk registers, manufacturers technical information, preventative maintenance schedules could all form part of the BIM for example. BIM covers all aspects of the project lifecycle and is being driven by UK Government, to ensure that all public sector projects are under-pinned by the creation, collation and exchange or shared 3D models and intelligent structured data that is attached to them. UK Government has defined a minimum requirement for Level 3 BIM by 2016, which defines a series of domain models and the provision of a single electronic environment to store shared data and information. In the UK, BIM made its first real public appearance in

Arguably the Government’s first project was funded by the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) and involved the rebuild of a 180 cell block at Cookham Wood Prison in Kent. The MoJ translated 2D standard designs into required 3D BIM models and involved the customer, the MoJ staff and external contractors throughout using collaborative models and common data environments to support the BIM initiative. BIM is being driven by UK Government, to ensure that all public sector projects are under-pinned by the creation, collation and exchange of shared 3D models and intelligent structured data that is attached to them. UK Government has defined a minimum requirement for Level 2 BIM by 2016, which defines a series of domain models and the provision of a single electronic environment to store shared data and information. UK Government has defined a minimum requirement for Level 3 BIM by 2016. Making the right choices to begin your BIM journey and maximise the return on your investment is critical. Man and Machine offer a variety of solutions and services to help you understand the impact of BIM and the market opportunity that it presents throughout the supply chain. Award-Winning Construction & Engineering Consultancy: ‘Your Permanent Contact for Temporary Works’ We are delighted to announce that SJG Temporary Works Ltd has been presented with Building and Construction Review’s Service Innovation Award. We spoke with Managing Director and recognised expert in Temporary Works, Simon Goldsmith to discuss the company’s services and specialities in further detail. Simon, who regularly delivers talks for industry associations, contractors and health & safety groups, wanted to drive the fact that SJG is a specialist engineering consultancy encompassing all associated areas: “We’re set up to be a fully-functioning temporary works department for contractors,” he explained. “Purely specialising in temporary works creates a niche expertise that our clients really appreciate. It’s an area that the HSE are taking a particular hard stance on due to the accident rates caused by malpractice or misuse of Temporary Works. Although the market is

crowded with multi-disciplinary engineering firms, our specialist outlook allows us to valueengineer works and to be one point of contact for all aspects of Temporary Works.” Founded in 2012, SJG Temporary Works Ltd originally began as a training and procedural control consultancy and has since developed progressively to become a concentrated design specialist. The team pay particular attention to its four designated areas: training courses, independent site support, tender & procedural advice and design services. SJG aims to provide a complete support solution for the facilitation and management of Temporary Works (whether working alongside large contractors or smaller organisations) and its group has a vast amount of engineering experience and share an all-encompassing knowledge of geotechnics, structures, equipment and design. The committed workforce of engineers actively undertakes thorough discussions with contractors to obtain all the necessary information prior to the provision of tailored solutions. All of which are suitably developed for their client’s individual scheduling and project requirements. As they operate in accordance with the British Standard BS5975, SJG has the competency to provide specialist guidance for associated issues and are covered by specific and comprehensive professional indemnity insurance.

“As our tagline suggests we strive to be ‘Your Permanent Contact for Temporary Works’,” continued Simon. “We aim to be the one point of contact Simon Goldsmith, for all staff Managing Director within a company, allowing them to pick up the phone and reach us if they have any queries regarding Temporary Works. We are hoping to develop our design team in order to manipulate our design rates so our customers can receive more cost-effective quotations – this is another aspect that encourages our long-lasting working relationships with clients.”

Our future aims revolve around continued growth and we are considering an expansion of their base in London as this will allow SJG to take advantage of their large client base in this area. “We have attended UK concrete Show for the past three years and last year we exhibited at ScotlandBuild to press home our advantage of having service agreements with a major UK contractor in North-East & Scotland. Raising the roof on industry standards CompetentRoofer is the Competent Person Scheme dedicated to compliant roof refurbishment. Through efficient and quality services, the organisation allows professional roofing contractors to self-certify that their roof refurbishment work complies with Building Regulations within England and Wales. The independent company is run by the National Federation of Roofing Contractors Limited (NFRC) which is the UK’s largest roofing trade association, representing over 70% of the roofing industry by value. “Many people do not understand what the Building

All those that work in the roofing sector from a one man band to large construction organisations can become a member as well as those who are already registered to a main contractor. The main benefit to roofers of being a member of CompetentRoofer is that there is no need to wait for a surveyor from the Local Authority to inspect the work before it can be signed off as complete. Launched in 2010 under licence (with backing) from the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG), CompetentRoofer has enjoyed great success in raising the profile of the quality roofing sector over the past five years. It currently has over 500 registered contractors throughout England and Wales and has received over 28,000 job notifications. Experiencing a growth of 100 members per year, CompetentRoofer aims to increase this by 120 this year and reach 30,000 jobs. They have also recently taken on a new CEO, James Talman. We feel all our members should be active in this area and aim to help them raise their profiles and gain more customers. “We will also be launching a new website in May, just in time for the Roofing Awards Gala event, which we are very excited to be attending.” T +44 (0)20 7448 3189 www.competentroofer.co.uk www.nfrc.co.uk

The world’s only fully covered AV & Power Point Building and Construction Review is incredibly proud to tell you more about Sync-box, the exciting innovation that has shot to even greater success after appearing on the hit television programme Dragons’ Den (aired on BBC). The completely unique recessed power and AV socket was developed in response to the problems surfacing with the advancement of slim line television sets: the home entertainment market has seen an increase in lighter screens and smaller brackets, which in essence allows the TV’s to be placed more closely to the wall, but doesn’t accommodate the connected wires. The power and audio/ visual leads remain stuffed awkwardly behind the machine and the cables end up protruding unattractively, ruining the stylish effect of the new set. The Sync-box combats this issue – as the first ever recessed power point to be manufactured, the slender product is designed around a standard double

socket space to minimise structural changes and enable a better fit whilst installing wall-mounted flat screen televisions. Innovative Building Durable Structures environmental and technical solutions The most used man-made material on the planet is concrete. Construction projects small, medium and large have all used concrete in one way or another.

However, as evidenced from crumbling infrastructure and structures the world over, the quality of the concrete can determine whether a project is truly viable or not. For instance, building a bridge with a lifespan of 50 years is not economically viable considering the cost of initial construction, eventual repairs, and the likelihood of early replacement.

Building and Construction Review is pleased to announce that Neo Environmental Ltd has been granted its highly prestigious Product Innovation Award. Neo Environmental is one of the fastest growing environmental consultancies in the UK and Ireland, with offices in Glasgow, Warwickshire, Belfast and Kildare (Republic of Ireland). Neo’s staff have completed environmental and technical assessments for over 50 residential developments in Scotland, England and Ireland, as well as for major road projects, retail developments, utilities, extraction sites (such as quarries), infrastructure and energy projects. With a number of offices now established, the company has extensive geographical coverage across the whole of the UK and Ireland. They have been commissioned to complete works for public sector organisations and on industry research projects with academic institutions. The team consists of experienced multi-disciplinary consultants, including EIA project managers, landscape architects, ecologists, heritage and archaeological consultants, environmental engineers, acousticians, hydrologists, geophysical surveyors, graphic designers and specialist technicians. Neo’s various environmental and technical consultants provide market leading expertise, which has resulted in an enviable track record in helping clients attain consent and discharging conditions. Having worked across many different sectors for a diverse range of clients, they are equally adept at conducting full EIAs or bespoke environmental and technical assessments. Neo Environmental’s staff have been involved in numerous appeals, acted as clerks of works, conducted due diligence assessments, full EIAs, standard environmental reports and much more. Offering extremely competitive rates and with their integrated, multi-disciplinary packages, clients can rest assured that all the various consultants are liaising in-house on all aspects of the project. Neo Environmental are a ‘one stop shop’ for environmental and technical solutions for developments. Where Neo Environmental are employed to complete all environmental aspects (such as EIAs), this ensures that everything is being collated by project managers and clients have one point of contact. This approach ensures that they are equally as effective when producing bespoke assessments. Neo Environmental’s culture and values ensure that you will receive: ss Independent, impartial, honest advice ss Excellent competitive rates ss A motivated, enthusiastic team of highly skilled individuals with strong technical and environmental backgrounds ss Bespoke, tailor-made solutions that minimise your risk ss Leading market knowledge and information Neo Environmental provides a diverse range of services including site surveys and investigations, desk-based assessment and

analytical services, typically tailored to a particular project. Thus, the lifespan of a concrete structure is vital. With population growth and density of a city intensifying, constructing replacements of key infrastructure and buildings can be a costly and sometimes impossible process. i Where possible, it creates huge disruption to the local population. The longer these structures can last the better. Concrete can deteriorate under certain circumstances, such as: ss Chloride attack/corrosion of steel reinforcement; ss Sulphate attack; ss Alkali aggregate reaction (AAR); and ss Freeze/thaw cycles. That being said, the most adverse influence of concrete durability involves the transport of fluids through the concrete. Water continues to damage or completely destroy more buildings and structures than war or natural disasters. Of course, concrete does have water resistant capabilities, but is at risk to water penetration. Thus, a waterproofing barrier is a must to lower the permeability and increase the durability of concrete. To do so there are a few options in creating a concrete waterproof barrier, including: ss Crystalline admixtures; ss Water repelling admixtures; ss Densifying admixtures; ss Densifying admixtures and water reducers; and ss Surface-applied membranes. More times than not, the selection is narrowed down to the surface or externally applied membrane and the Internal membrane using crystalline technology. The external membrane is a material that

provides a barrier around the concrete structure in order to prevent the passage of water. Externally applied membranes are the traditional waterproofing method, but have limitations that include tears, punctures, deterioration over time, and installation errors. If any of these situations take place, repair can be impossible because the membrane is not accessible through the concrete and it is hard to find the failed area that needs to be fixed. This ends in replacement which takes a great deal of time and costs considerable money, if it is at all possible. An internal or integral waterproofing membrane is one that performs its function within the concrete as opposed to on the surface. This is the technology behind Permeability Reducing Admixtures (PRA). The admixture becomes a permanent solution as it is part of the concrete mix and lays dormant in the matrix until it comes in contact with moisture where it develops needle-like microstructure to stop the flow of moisture. Furthermore, in North America the concrete waterproofing industry redefined their terminology a short time ago in a way which helps to clearly understand the differences between admixtures. In fact, American Concrete Institute’s (ACI) 212.3R-10 Report on Chemical Admixture document devoted Chapter 15 to Permeability Reducing

Admixtures that outlines PRAH and PRAN classifications. Permeability Reducing Admixture – Hydrostatic Conditions or PRAH products are sufficiently able to resist water under hydrostatic pressure penetration and are suitable for watertight construction. Conversely, damproofing admixtures are now referred to as Permeability Reducing Admixture – Non-Hydrostatic Conditions or PRAN. PRAN admixtures reduce water absorption by repellent chemicals (soap, oils) or partial pore blocking (densifiers). These admixtures are not suitable for concrete exposed to water under pressure and cannot protect in the presence of hydrostatic pressure. Waterproofing against hydrostatic pressure is an important distinction that sets PRAHs apart from PRANs. Crystalline Waterproofing is the durable concrete waterproofing solution worldwide. With sustainable building practices increasing in importance, and the lifespan of a structure intrinsically connected to this movement, a reliable waterproofing solution that will last for the intended life of the concrete structures becomes paramount. Product Innovation Award

For a Professional Finish Building and Construction Review is delighted to feature Beissier and commend the team behind the brand for achieving its well-regarded Product Innovation award. Beissier’s history dates back to 1871 when M. Hector Beissier purchased a small company manufacturing gelatine and then started diversifying into adhesives, plasters and paints. Now an established market leader in ready to use Spray Applied plasters for internal walls and ceilings across Europe, the organisation operates from its head office south of Paris in La Chapelle La Reine and its secondary factory located near St Sebastian in Spain. Five years ago Beissier hadn’t even began trading in the UK or Ireland, so it became a priority for the group to develop a product range suitable to introduce to these markets. As a result, there was a heavy focus on the promotion of its two main brands: Prestonett (targeted at paint and decorating merchants) and Bagar (ideal for drylining contractors and commercial painting contractors). “As Beissier was entering a very competitive market, we knew we had to offer a better service than our competitors in order to get our products trialled in new stores,” explained UK Sales Manager Aaron Barbeau. “Of course we had a professional range of products, but we needed to stand out, so our strategy was simple: provide a premium performing product at a competitive price, along with excellent service levels and a flexible approach to trading. This has worked so far and we are slowly seeing the fruits of this, having established a small following of loyal end users and a growing network of distributors.” Specialists in interior substrate preparation, Beissier offer professional and customisable solutions that fall into two categories:

Painters Fillers & Plasters for manual application (in powder and paste form) and read-to-use Plasters for mechanical spraying (in paste form), all of which are available via merchants (for a full list of stockists please check www.beissier.eu). The Bagar Airliss product range features various ready-to-use water-based sprayapplied levellers, surfacers and jointing compounds for internal walls and ceilings. The Bagar Spray Applied plaster has been described as “quicker, easier and more efficient” than traditional plastering methods and has made a significant impression on users since its release, with more and more customers investing in the products across the UK. Meanwhile, the Prestonett range comprises plasters suitable for every conceivable requirement in the preparation of substrates (filling, levelling and smoothing), and Beissier holds the esteemed position as the second largest company of its kind based in France. Beissier operates via its competent logistics supplier based in Thurrock that provides the necessary warehousing facilities. This process optimises efficiency and convenience for the client as it includes the processing of orders as well as a direct to site delivery service, which effectively cuts out delivery costs for its merchants whilst enabling a competitive price for the end users. “Our main plan for the future is to continue innovating and producing trade quality products,” Aaron said when asked to detail what the next few years hold for Beissier. “Exports are an important part of this as this is integral to our success, and ideally the goal is to achieve sales volumes that would justify a production facility in the UK, but momentarily we are still a long way from achieving this. “As the construction industry is still fairly buoyant I believe the prospect for products such as the ready to use Spray Applied plaster is very positive and every new project where this sort of material and process is used shows off the benefits v traditional methods. Although the UK is a very traditional market and contractors may appear slow to change, change is slowly happening and we look forward to the future readily – for Beissier it is onwards and upwards from here!” www.beissier.eu

Cool solution for cold store construction

New Asian shopping centre helps regenerate East London’s Green Street

One of the UK’s leading producers of quality savoury & sweet pastry products has completed a £7.3 million investment in a state-of-the-art packing and despatch facility which benefits from the in-built strength and insulation afforded by XPS (extruded polystyrene) from Sundolitt.

Wren Architecture & Design has completed East, a new shopping centre that has created a heart for Asian retail on Green Street, East London. The scheme is on the site of a former bus depot that had been derelict for 60 years, and is an innovative example of retail-led regeneration bringing a renewed vibrancy to the Green Street area at Upton Park. The site is situated in a prominent town centre location, and had been earmarked by the London Borough of Newham. East has

addressed this issue, underpinning a thriving Asian community shopping destination which is already ‘on the map,’ drawing people from both the local area and the wider Asian community from further afield. The new 3,900m2 retail hub comprises 37 individual, two-storey retail units along an internal covered street, which terminates with a ground floor souk that has 17 smaller units. East’s design typology was purposely drawn from an analysis of existing retail provision on Green Street, and to ensure it meets the specific demands of local retailers. T +44 (0)207 424 9448

Harrow School has IAAFstandard running track The re-built athletics facilities at Harrow School included an IAAFstandard running track, facilities for long jump, high jump, discus and all the main athletics events, plus a water jump for the steeplechase and an area for the pole vault event – a relatively rare feature in UK school athletics facilities. Hauraton SPORTFIX components installed at the Harrow School sports complex include; drainage channels around the edge of the running track, sand traps and soft kerb edging around the long jump pit and a water jump kit on the steeplechase track. At any time in the UK, rain can stop play and on tennis hard courts the build-up of water can take some time to run away if attention has not been paid to the surface water drainage requirement. At Harrow School tennis courts, this is not a problem as a discreet drainage channel run located just below the net efficiently drains away any excess rainwater. Over the years, Hauraton have built

Inta goes HIPER for heat interface units Because prevention is better than cure Inta has introduced its ‘HIPER’ high performance heat interface unit (HIU), designed to deliver heating and hot water whilst improving energy efficiency and minimising costs in multi-dwelling developments.

Building and Construction Review recommends RABScreen, the innovative mesh air intake screens designed by RAB Specialist Engineers Ltd to protect all air movement systems.

Installed in shared residential buildings, the HIU distributes heating and domestic hot water from a central plant system to individual properties. By removing the need for each area to have a conventional boiler, gas flue and hot water cylinder, the interface units dramatically reduce build costs for developers. Inta has worked to develop a product that has more features and benefits than any other HIU on the market. HIPER HIU boasts a factory-set, non-electric temperature control valve which prevents risk of scalding in the event of a power supply failure, as well as features the most advanced dualspeed PID control (patent pending) of any unit, intelligently controlling the heat into the plate heat exchangers by electronic modulation of a PICV (pressure independent control valve). A PICV is three valves in one: a differential pressure control valve, two-port flow regulating valve and a flow regulation valve. One PICV replaces three separate valves that would otherwise be required to maintain the maximum level of system control so the HIU can operate effectively. The

Businesses are wasting thousands of pounds each year due to inefficient air-handling systems that require replacement or frequent maintenance. Higher operating pressures and temperatures will occur if air handling equipment is required to use more energy and operate for longer cycle times in order to maintain normal operating levels.

HIPER HIU PICV valve can maintain control up to a pressure differential of 4 bar. PICVs are not familiar to all at this time, so there is bound to be some confusion amongst those who are not so well informed. For instance, modulating valves are not uncommon, but at no time can they be claimed to function as a PICV. These simple modulating valves have differential pressure capabilities of not much more than 1.5 bar, so control capability is limited, and an additional DPCV is required to be added to the installation at extra cost in product, installation and commissioning. Designed with serviceability in mind, its two heat exchange plates have been built to the front of the HIU, fixed with four allen key bolts. This means that the plates can easily be removed and replaced in seconds should they need maintenance. A large strainer mesh at the primary connections, four times larger than a conventional strainer, will prevent blockage and ensure the HIU continues working efficiently even if the unit has been neglected of cleaning. Quality, reliability and high efficiency

EasyFlow Liquid Floor Screed & Underfloor Heating

Firebird’s Enviromax has been a leading oilfired boiler brand for many years, renowned for its quality, reliability and high efficiency. Now Firebird has launched the C12/18 Enviromax boiler, available in three models, as a kitchen, boiler house, or external heatpac.

EasyFlow are underfloor heating and liquid floor screed specialists, providing an innovative, quality flooring solution.

The new C18 Enviromax boiler has a 92.3% seasonal efficiency, making it one of the most energy-efficient boilers in its class. It features the popular Riello burner, with advanced digital control box technology, providing fault diagnostics and performance monitoring facilities for the service engineer.

Liquid floor screed provides fast, efficient and precise floor covering – with many advantages over traditional screed solutions. It is ideal for underfloor heating as the screed flows around the pipes, forming a void-free finish. With an underfloor heating system, warm water from any heat source is circulated through a series of pipes installed and integrated within the floor. The heat that is emitted from the floor is natural radiated heat, providing a more comfortable and even temperature throughout the room.

The new C18 Enviromax features a digital control panel, in common with all Enviromax kitchen boilers up to 35kW output. This advanced control has allowed Firebird to add anti-cycling, frost protection, pump overrun and recorded hours of operation facilities, displayed on an easy to read LCD display, automatically illuminated when boiler controls are activated.

the underfloor experts

It gives end users more precise control over boiler settings, and enables them to easily view boiler performance and temperature. A major advantage of the C18 Enviromax is its compact size. BAC series Breathing Air Compressors

Health and safety campaign GO SAFE

Breathe Safety Ltd manufactures the BAC series Breathing Air Compressors. These units are designed to generate high purity air for 4 or 8 breathing apparatus users. These are suitable for a variety of industries including pharmaceutical, petrochemical and nuclear. The BAC units are trailer mounted which makes them easy to transport to the work location. Powered by a diesel engine with a direct drive to the compressor, all units are fitted with a chalwyn valve and spark arrestor as standard, for automatic shutdown and explosion protection. Constructed to meet the requirements of EN139/EN14594 for Airline Breathing Apparatus these units produce high purity air to EN12021. In addition to the compressor air, a high pressure 200 bar cylinder bank provides a secondary air supply which automatically operates in the event of the main supply failing or being compromised. If the main

supply should fail there is an alarm which simultaneously activates giving an audible and visual warning. The compressors feature a unique removable control panel. This gives users an option of removing the panel from the trailer and positioning it remotely to just outside the work zone. T +44 (0)844 9151111 sales@breathesafety.com www.breathesafety.com

Health, Safety & Workwear News

True Foot Safety means Comfort, Ergonomics & Orthotics One of the most pervasive but overlooked ailments are ‘sore feet’ brought about by being ‘on your feet all day.’ As trivial this may sound, they could be early-stage symptoms of something far more serious. Feet are actually amazingly engineered constructions. They support your weight, provide stability, balance, and shock absorbency – and have this job all your life. For the foot to work properly, numerous bones, tendons and ligaments have to interact, and the 90,000 sweat glands on each foot also help regulate body temperature and purge waste products. It’s no surprise that so many things can go wrong. RSI (Repetitive Strain Injury) is the foremost work environment problem in the western world. More than half of all occupational injuries are directly related

to injuries to hands and feet, including musculoskeletal disorders of the feet, such as plantar fasciitis, fallen arches or flat feet. Such conditions are virtually an epidemic, without even considering the vast estimated number of undiagnosed and unreported cases. Over time, these issues also have a knock-on effect upon the knees, hips, spine and even the neck, which are rarely traced back to the original foot misalignments. Unsupportive footwear are a major contributing factor to Plantar Fasciitis, as they cause over-pronation of the foot, whereby the arches collapse and the feet ‘roll over’ and elongate. This unnatural elongation puts excess strain on the ligaments, muscles and nerves in the foot. Eventually, the bones in the feet unlock, causing the foot to roll inward. This worsens with every footstep, further stretching the plantar

become so time-consuming that a fully informed choice is all but impossible. Secondly, there are many misconceptions or out-dated ways of thinking, such as the myth is that the heaviest and sturdiest boots are the safest. However, this could not be further from the truth. Such boots are rarely comfortable, do not flex naturally with the feet and can cause stresses and strains. fascia and causing inflammation and pain near the heel bone. Prevention is better than cure. The importance of selecting the most suitable footwear is greater than ever. However, several factors prevent this. Firstly, the overwhelming choice available these days, it can quickly

The problem is further compounded by the fact that decision makers are seldom among those who actually wear the products that they purchase, and conversely those who wear the products rarely have the power to influence the footwear that they wear each day. Therefore in reality, it’s all too easy for decisions to be based on such issues as convenience, habit, or the

Orthotics are corrective foot devices. They are not the same as soft, spongy, rubber footbeds, gel heel cups etc that may cushion the heels of feet, but which do not provide any biomechanical correction. In fact, gel can do the opposite and make an incorrect walking pattern even more unstable! Orthotic insoles work by supporting the arches while re-aligning the ankles and lower legs and support the arches, which reduces the tension and overwork of the plantar fascia, allowing the inflamed tissue to heal. Hidden away out of sight, such corrective orthotic insoles can offer substantial, lasting

relief to heel pain symptoms. Most people feel a noticeable improvement immediately, but feel it more at the end of the day, when they note that their feet do not hurt the same way as they used to each evening. Sometimes, the difference can be far more dramatic, and has even been known to drastically reduce symptoms of chronic back pain. The difficulty is that, in practice, everyone has a different arch size, so there is no one-size-fits-all cure, and therefore each person’s feet would have to be individually measured. This has always meant that such solutions were never realistic unless the level of suffering had reached the critical stage for medical intervention. Introducing the JALAS® Neutraliser Orthotic ArchSupporting Insoles & the JALAS® FootStop Service

The JALAS® Neutralizer insoles are available in a variety of sizes and arch heights. The computer scan decides on the most appropriate sizing, and the insole can be supplied and worn there and then. The insoles can be worn with any item of footwear, for an instantaneous improvement in foot comfort and support. However, JALAS safety boots are specifically designed to be worn with this insole, therefore for best results, they are recommended. In tests, user commonly report unprecedented levels of comfort, complete freedom from foot pain, and even a disappearance of chronic back pain.

Some organisations have tried to avoid these difficulties by providing a budget to each staff that can then choose whichever footwear they choose – the rationale being that they are best placed to assess the most suitable items. However, staff is unlikely to be adequately qualified or informed for such technical decisions. Instead, aesthetic or fashion-related considerations can come into play, and should any subsequent injury occur that results in legal action, the Courts are likely to take a dim view of such informal PPE self-regulation.

Workwear News

Behind the scenes at Berendsen Berendsen is a company that can be best described in one word as a ‘chameleon’ of sorts – evolving and adapting to the requirements of the garment and textiles industry to present a solid and rounded offering for its customers in today’s challenging climate.

laundry process –design and construction in workwear draws on over a decade of manufacturing garments and providing laundry services to ensure both can work in tandem successfully. All fabrics used in Berendsen workwear are tested in true-to–life simulations and ‘live’ at their own industrial sites before being implemented into garments. To date, personalised Berendsen workwear has been selected for the needs of thousands of businesses across Europe based on comfort, function, safety and long life, applying Berendsen’s additional understanding of the laundry sector inherently in the design for the best result for the customer.

Kick-starting this new sense of identity with a new company name with the appointment of a new CEO back in 2013, the company also shed its shackles of the familiarly of the ‘Sunlight Group’ name and focused on presenting a much more rounded offering for end users, as ‘Europe’s leading textile service group.’ Today, Berendsen are proud to present themselves as a full supplier and service solution, offering both a supply element in workwear which is further supported by a laundering and service care support system. This full garment rental and care service is completely unique, offering a real point of difference to competitors. For customers today, Berendsen can not only supply a suitable workwear solution that meets the required standards and brief on the job, but can care and maintain it to ensure it protects most effectively for its wearers and gain maximum wear for clients. With an estimated 15-20% share in the Europe Rental market already, the company have a strong foothold from which to grow and currently manufacture an estimated 2 million garments per year. Across the UK currently the company operates from 14 sites in total dedicated to workwear, with additional sites services the company’s main other sectors, Heath and Food and Catering. Globally, this spans to a staggering 55 plants in use cementing a very broad worldwide perspective. Over 100 years of exemplary service Some may be familiar with the work of Berendsen under their former guise as The Davis Service Group Plc, formed in 2002 following the acquisition of Sophus Berendsen, which had textile service operations under the Berendsen brand in Scandinavia, The Netherlands, Germany and Poland. These operations were combined with the existing Davis business which had very similar operations in the UK, Ireland and Germany, providing services under the Sunlight and Spring Grove brands. On July 5th 2013 Sunlight changed its name to Berendsen UK. The name change is a formal declaration of solidary, drive and signifies ambition to grow moving forward. Both Berendsen and Davis were long-established business service companies with history dating back over a hundred years.

a confidence in service which is then passed onto customers who can then focus on other areas of their business. In a business which has seen significant change in recent years, these values take front and centre as an objective for all aspects of the business, working towards a unified goal.

The company’s interest in supplying garment care and maintenance stems from a notable industry-wide trend in outsourcing. With today’s customer more than ever short on time, resources and yet attributing great value on a corporate image, the health and safety compliance issues of various industries, and yet still desire to create a customer made solution at a suitable cost. Built on European success From its European origins, Berendsen brings with its weight in knowledge and expertise, particularly within the workwear market. The Berendsen name holds great weight in markets such as Denmark, Norway and Sweden, holding the title of market leader. Key markets within those regions are understood to be in workwear and industrial-wipers in the Netherlands, the German hospital and nursing home market and are targeting an increase of market share in workwear in Germany. It also has established operations in the emerging markets of Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia and the Czech Republic. Within Facilities services, an expanding area of growth is floor protections mats for commercial users, reducing the dir and moisture brought into the premises and delivering a saving on overall cleaning costs. The mats business is experiencing across Europe, in the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, Norway, Poland and Sweden.

The business today Much of the work in the past year has been to move the shift from what the company was, to what it stands for today – not just by name but by the values associated with the business. Almost operating on a unique two tier principle, Berendsen remain in the position to be able to cater for other suppliers and also end users alike, with the workwear sector noted as a core area of growth, totalling 29% of growth revenue at present across 55 plants in ten countries across Europe. UK.

A two-tiered approach to success Delivering solutions for Berendsen means being able to take the stress out of their customer’s hands, and so the business model is focused on purchasing, delivering textiles and hygiene articles and also equally managing laundry maintenance and delivery, offering full solutions tailored to the specific needs of the customer. The appeal to customers is clear: they can free up time, space, reduce staff expenditures and focus their energies back into the core elements of their individual business.

The company vision statement very much follows the same ethos – the company’s strengths in supply and garment care and being able to drive this supply and maintenance in its entirety ‘allows its customers to do what they do best.’ Underpinning these values is

As a supplier and laundry combined, the advantage in inherent understanding of both pieces of the puzzle are mutually beneficial to each other. For example, the design process considers the expectations of the long term

Temperature control is a breeze During periods of cold and windy weather, why allow the temperature in your lobby to drop? Just because it is chilly outside, doesn’t mean your reception areas should be cold too. The revolving door has become a significant choice for many architects and facilities managers due to the way they naturally help to reduce energy loss within a building. The cost-saving decision to install a revolving door not only reduces your monthly energy bills but is more ecofriendly for the environment due to the

Still feeling the cold? Why not consider adding a Boon Edam heater onto your door!

RECYFIX® MONOTEC – A new monolithic drainage system with a high attenuation volume Hauraton Limited have introduced into the UK, RECYFIX® MONOTEC, their new high capacity channel system for the surface drainage of pavements, bicycle routes, car/van parks and roadways in and around residential, commercial and light industrial areas where the channels need to have high lateral strength, are capable of withstanding continuous compressive loads and where ease of installation is a major consideration.

The three sizes of 100mm channels can be arranged in a step-fall arrangement with different channel heights connected by special transition adaptors that ensure the water drains away smoothly and quietly with the increased flow velocity playing a considerable role in cleaning the channel run. The step-fall arrangement may be desirable where there is a high risk of silting as the increased flow will help wash debris towards the system’s Inspection/Trash Box.

The RECYFIX® MONOTEC one metre long channel component is of a sturdy monolithic design where the grating and the tongue and groove linking system are integral to the channel moulding. The whole unit is made of tough, virtually unbreakable polypropylene (PP) formulated to be very resistant to daily temperature fluctuations from frost conditions to strong sunlight, including the Ultra Violet (UV) spectrum. PP is naturally resistant to de-icing salt. Complying with the requirements of EN 1433, the PP is given its UV resistance by adding just sufficient carbon black as a stabiliser so that the structural strength of the material is unaffected and a consistent appearance is maintained.

a minimum thickness, making it ideal for retrofit projects. VACUPOR was specified at Enerley Close as specifying a thicker material would have meant restricting headroom and doorways.

The project consisted of 32 maisonettes; the buildings were in poor repair with complaints from residents of damp, condensation and draughts.

The VACUPOR NT used at this project delivered a U-Value of 0.21W/m2k for just 30mm of thickness. The thermal conductivity as quoted on the product’s CE certificate is 0.007W/mK.

Vacutherm supplied insulation to the ground floor of all the duplexes in both blocks and the panels were laid onto the existing concrete floors. Previously, they had visited each of the flats and spoke with the tenants as was the whole ethos of the project, tenant liaison was a key objective for the whole site. This also gave Vacutherm the opportunity to survey each home and to provide a detailed AutoCAD allowing the installers to follow ensuring the panels were fitted in the correct positions. The key to creating durable outdoor decking

New Sudstech Paving offers unrivalled porosity

The Timber Decking and Cladding Association are warning of a dangerous practice of using internal strength graded carcassing/building joists for external timber decking. Janet Sycamore, Director of operations explains, “Yes strength graded material is required, either C16 or C24 (or C22 for southern yellow pine), but internal building joists are potentially treated with completely the wrong type of wood preservative (if treated at all) and are certainly not suitable for outdoor use. Anyone engaging in such practice is letting their customers and the industry down.”

Sudstech is one of the latest porous paving products introduced to the SUDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage Solutions) market, with the impressive ability to transfer up to 50,000 litres of water per square metre per hour.

The warning comes following a spate of enquiries where untreated or incorrectly treated material has led to premature failure. Pressure treated timber is a common choice for deck building, particularly for the substructure. The industry default specification aims to achieve a desired service life of 15 years – this is a guide of what to expect given good design, installation and conditions of use. Longer life material can

The highly porous, low-maintenance material is created using sustainable products and is designed to allow the natural infiltration method of the water cycle for an easy and environmentally-friendly drainage system.

also be sourced but usually by special order. With correct materials and building practices timber decking will give a long and trouble free life. For reassurance choose DeckMark accredited materials and installers – details are available on the TDCA decking website. Durable, fit for purpose timber decking and cladding starts with the Timber Decking and Cladding Association. For more information, visit: www.tda.org.uk or call: +44 (0)1977 558147.

Suitable for all private and public applications, including domestic driveways, public footpaths, golf clubs and car parks, Sudstech can be used as an alternative to standard asphalt hard landscaping materials, whilst offering the same aesthetics and durability as some of the most established products in the market, with the added benefit of a costeffective water management service. The porous material is created using natural stones sourced in the UK and can be specified in a wide range of colours and finishes, offering a solution to complement or contrast with any architectural colour scheme. The coloured stones are combined with a specially developed resin, which allows rainfall to evenly saturate through the surface into the ground and eventually finding its way to the water course. Sudstech uses varying grades of angular aggregates to deliver maximised strength and durability for a sleek, porous

surface that can withstand all usages without compromising the quality of the material. Sudstech is also unaffected by severe weather conditions, with the rubber sub base layer designed to allow any expansion and contraction caused by the constant freeze/thaw process of water within its voids, so eliminating delamination that can occur in other porous paving. Further information on Sudstech is available from Langford Direct Ltd on: +44 (0)161 2121617, by emailing: info@sudstech.co.uk or by visiting the company’s website at: www.sudstech.co.uk

Air Control & Development Ltd (ACD) was established in March 1994, and understands just how daunting it can be, given the complexity of the market and the huge range of systems and companies out there, to choose a reliable and trustworthy company to quote, install and maintain a new air conditioning or ventilation system.

Natural Cotswold Stone produced by Stone Supplies Quarried since Roman times, the warmth and beauty of natural Cotswold Stone characterises some of the finest architecture in the country and has provided the fabric of many magnificent houses and churches. Much of the charm of the Cotswolds lies in the distinctive character of its cities, towns and villages, built from the local stone. Situated in the heart of the Cotswolds, Stone Supplies (Cotswolds) is a family owned and run business that has established itself at the forefront of supplying high quality Cotswold stone products for over 15 years. Operating from our quarry at Tetbury, we provide building, landscaping and architectural products of the highest quality in a variety of natural variations which highlight the beauty of natural Cotswold stone. All of our products are suitable for a range of projects ranging from small extensions, conservation schemes, modern new build designs, listed buildings and the renovation of historic buildings. We extract some of the most distinctive stone in the Cotswolds, particularly our top bed or ‘shelly’ stone which is unrivalled in colour and texture throughout the region. We select

and split by hand to produce a rough faced building stone suitable for both internal and external use. Our building stone colours vary from grey through shelly to traditional Cotswold buff which when mixed together contributes to the particular character of Cotswold stone. This can then be shown to great effect when used alongside the traditional limestone ashlar plinth, quoins and window surrounds. Our coursed natural building stone is cut using a hydraulic guillotine and then finished by hand to give a wide variation of sizes. Quality, advanced brickmaking Bulmer Brick and Tile Company is a long established family business on the site of a brick making yard dating back centuries. Bulmer bricks are made from the finest London Clays, dug continually from our own clay seams since Tudor times. All our bricks are entirely hand made using traditional methods. We specialise in restoration and conservation of old buildings; working closely with architects and contractors to produce our facing brick to the specification required for your particular building. Although we aim to have a stock of the more common sizes, dimensions and texture are made to order, so that each building receives the correct brick for the work. The kilns are unique coal fired down-draught kilns, loaded, unloaded and fired by hand in a long and labourious process, ensuring each and every brick has had our personal attention. No artificial colours, tints or dyes are used in our process. The beautiful range of colours from orange to dark red and purple comes purely from the firing process, just as it would have been over the centuries. We make a huge variety of brick specials, including terracotta, plinths, squints, decorative chimney bricks, string course bricks and over 500 different types of coping which increases on a weekly basis. All the specials are moulded from wooden moulds, which are made in our own carpentry workshop. We also have a range of garden edging and decorative plaques depicting floral patterns, some of which

are made from original moulds over 100 years old. We have our own brick cutting workshop where we can create cut and rubbed arches, either loose or on steel lintels ready to lift into position, and can cut specials or cut and bond from customer supplied material. Doors & Windows Specialist of the Year

Building Product Solutions: Manufacturer of Quality Windows further cements our position as one of the North’s leading window manufacturers. “The whole team have worked incredibly hard, not just over the past twelve months, but the entire six years since we started. We really couldn’t have got to where we are today without our team. Myself and Managing Director Ian Harrison work incredibly hard when recruiting to ensure we have the right people around us, and our growth gives us all the evidence we need to know we hired the right people.”

Building and Construction Review is incredibly pleased to present Building Product Solutions with its highly coveted Doors & Windows Specialist of the Year profile. Despite being set up during the double dip recession in 2009, founders Ian Harrison and Lynne Darwin have managed to grow the company on a consistent basis, to the degree where they have achieved themselves the status as one of the fastest growing window manufacturers in the UK. Building Product Solutions was formed to accommodate a gap in the market which was made ever prominent when suppliers, struggling to keep up with the financial demand of business, kept going bust. The enterprise actively strived to combat the economic hurdles by providing an unparalleled level of service, delivering solutions of a superior value and quality. The business, which is located in Rotherham, specialises in the manufacture, distribution and installation of bespoke windows and doors. Every component is strategically designed to fit builders’ architectural plans, regardless of the property size and style. This flexibility has enabled the industry experts to secure a number of high profile contracts wins with house builders such as Persimmon, Taylor Wimpey, Larkfleet, Harron Homes and Gleeson, boasting a £14.2m order book and presence on 165 sites throughout England. Significant growth has taken the team on an excitingly progressive path, seeing turnover increase by a remarkable 60% and staff numbers almost doubling all within the past 12 months. 2015 also saw the opening of its new glass plant; a 3,500 sq ft facility which brings the entire fabrication process in house to optimise reliability, efficiency and output control. A further 7,000 sq ft extension (currently in planning) will house a

distribution unit, further increasing capacity by allowing the company to hold stock. Lynne Darwin, Sales Director at Building Product Solutions, outlined the company’s successes, particularly whilst referencing to this significant milestone: “It’s no secret that the manufacturing sector has faced tough challenges in the past few years, but with our investment we were determined to come out on top. The glass plant puts us in the perfect position to capitalise on the growing confidence within our sector. The expansion will cut costs by around 20%. We’re also able to reduce lead times – improving on what was already one of the best in the industry.” The organisation stands out because of its swift production and delivery processes; the average industry turnaround time is up to six weeks, whilst Building Product Solutions can complete the job in five working days for cavity closers and ten for glazed frames.

Other renowned strengths come in the form of exceptional customer service, an operational fleet of liveried vehicles (newly invested in), and the development of a bespoke piece of on-site software – all of which are key assets making the company more reliable and efficient than ever. It’s important to note that these extraordinary efforts haven’t been left unrewarded. Building Product Solutions has duly received recognition for preferred supplier status with Persimmon Homes across Yorkshire and the North East, and over the past year the group have been shortlisted for eight awards, scooping two and currently waiting on the outcome of four more.

To conclude: the future is looking very bright for Building Product Solutions, what with its further investments planned in its facility, machinery, processes and people. Further developments include the completion of a contemporary open plan working area for the administration and support departments, along with offices, meeting rooms and a well-equipped canteen. This next growth phase, which has prompted a projected forecast of £5.6 million for 2015/16 and a busy order book, will only help to validate the brand as a reputable nationwide industry leader.
