Consulting Engineers Waterman provide Lessons Learnt in BIM Multidiscipline consultancy Waterman Group was established in 1952 and has since become a leading provider of sustainable solutions specifically developed to fulfil the planning, engineering design and project delivery requirements of customers within the property, infrastructure, environment and energy markets. The group has won several big contracts with major private sector developers (including Hammerson, Land Securities and British Land) and are also working on a range of highprofile government funded projects.

Neil Lewis, MD of Waterman Building Services

Waterman’s Building Services Managing Director Neil Lewis, understands that BIM is a formidable force in the industry which has been heavily promoted by government on their schemes in the interest of business productivity and improved

development and the completion of two landmark office buildings at New Ludgate for Land Securities (where Waterman was appointed multidiscipline engineering and environmental duties). Their portfolio of Government funded schemes includes numerous schools under the Priority Schools programme, University schemes including the award winning MMU Student Union Building in Manchester and are currently delivering a number of Healthcare projects for Vinci within their P21 initiative. visualisation. It is therefore one of the company’s key aims to continue to make advances in technology and innovation to achieve these benefits within the design and construction process. Neil took to the stage at North England Build on the 27th April at Manchester Central. His ‘Lessons Learnt in BIM, the Story So Far,’ between 3.15-3.45pm was an informative review of lessons learnt whilst designing within BIM focused construction projects. Waterman has invested in a large variety of initiatives to optimise design, construction and asset management with effective BIM implementation, to help clients realise the true benefit of the advanced digital design and organisational capabilities. The company has worked on many significant commissions, such as the redevelopment of Argents historic King’s Cross

Excitingly, Waterman was recognised for its efforts whilst scooping two industry coveted titles at the CIBSE Building Performance Awards earlier this year, a celebrated event highlighting examples of building performance excellency and innovation. Its Building Services team and the Everyman Theatre in Liverpool were duly commended with two Building Performance Awards for ‘Building Performance Champion of the Year’ and ‘Project of the Year’ in the Leisure category.

As you are probably aware, main contractors and the HSE are increasingly concerned about dust and many construction sites are now insisting that contractors have their own M or H class vacuums before they are able to start work. Many sites even have a clean sweep policy, so no brooms allowed either! The HSE say ‘Construction dust is not just a nuisance – it can seriously damage your health. Regularly breathing in these dusts over a long time can cause life-changing lung diseases.’ The threat is not only to your health but also organisations have a responsibility to protect their workforce and using out dated equipment can have serious legal implications. Dust extraction should be high on your agenda. As a supplier of niche products, we were approached by a number of clients to source some solutions. We searched for a

Over 700m² of the product in 6mm buff was applied to the new Bluecoats housing estate’s footpaths to complement the natural stone finish of the houses, whilst standing out from the surrounding tarmac roadways. Natratex Cotswold proved the perfect solution for the application due to its ability to withstand constant pedestrian usage without damaging the appearance of the natural stone. Natratex Cotswold, Bituchem’s flagship product, is extremely versatile with successful applications across a variety of sectors, including the housebuilding sector. The material is particularly effective for such applications as it can be used to complement or contrast with the surrounding landscape, including modern rural developments which are increasingly using natural Cotswold stone for the houses and surrounding areas.

The natural aesthetics of Natratex Cotswold is created using naturally occurring coloured aggregates, bound using a clear binder for a longlasting, durable finish. Suitable for both pedestrian and vehicular areas, Natratex Cotswold can be applied in new construction projects, such as new housing developments, as well as overlays for existing landscapes and regeneration projects. The material can be laid all year round and is done so using conventional equipment for a quick and easy application without the need for lengthy road closures. Bituchem has created a heavy duty alternative for heavily-trafficked areas and also a porous option for schemes requiring a sustainable drainage solution, which eliminates the need for noticeable conventional drains. The prestigious company is the owner of the UK market leading brand Gypsol. Manufactured in the UK, Gypsol acts as an exceptional alternative to sand/cement screeds and polished concrete. At the forefront of liquid screed development and innovation, the Gypsol brand has grown significantly since its creation three years ago and has gained the majority of the market. It is made mainly from a recycled material and makes for the perfect supplement to underfloor heating. When compared to the more outdated and traditional flooring systems, Gypsol has proven to be more advantageous in a multitude of ways. Not only is it significantly cheaper, less

problematic and more environmentally friendly (as it is constructed predominantly from a recycled material), it is also incredibly easy to apply.

A notable product in the Francis Flower portfolio is the Solida System, which is designed to provide a whole house heating solution by combining existing technologies and the Gypsol based flowing anhydrite floor screeds. The process involves incorporating Gypsol screed in separating floors in order to maximise desirability, asset value and useable space.

“The Gypsol product is a highly useful, innovative creation,” commented Paul Pepper, Managing Director of Francis Flower. “Since introducing the product three years ago we have received a fantastic amount of interest and sales have soared. We provide the basis for our customers to produce a high quality floor screed and we create the demand in the market for them to sell into.”

“This system enables the screed to go on the first floor on timber floors, ensuring homeowners encapsulate underfloor heating effectively,” Paul explained. “As a sustainable alternative to radiators, the Solida System improves a house builder’s green credentials massively as it reduces energy use. We now have a number of customers using the Solida System, including the renowned timber frame manufacturers Oakworth Homes.”

Architects, designers, main contractors, self-builders and flooring contractors utilise this specialist ingredient in order to effectively enhance their industrial projects.

For a Professional Finish Beissier’s history dates back to 1871 when M. Hector Beissier purchased a small company manufacturing gelatine and then started diversifying into adhesives, plasters and paints. Now an established market leader in ready to use Spray Applied plasters for internal walls and ceilings across Europe, the organisation operates from its head office south of Paris in La Chapelle La Reine and its secondary factory located near St Sebastian in Spain. Five years ago Beissier hadn’t even began trading in the UK or Ireland, so it became a priority for the group to develop a product range suitable to introduce to these markets. As a result, there was a heavy focus on the promotion of its two main brands: Prestonett (targeted at paint and decorating merchants) and Bagar (ideal for drylining contractors and commercial painting contractors). “As Beissier was entering a very competitive market, we knew we had to offer a better service than our competitors in order to get our products trialled in new stores,” explained UK Sales Manager Aaron Barbeau. “Of course we had a professional range of products, but we needed to stand out, so our strategy was simple: provide a premium performing product at a competitive price, along with excellent service levels and a flexible approach to trading. This has worked so far and we are slowly seeing the fruits of this, having established a small following of loyal end users and a growing network of distributors.” Specialists in interior substrate preparation, Beissier offer professional and customisable solutions that fall into two categories: Painters Fillers & Plasters for manual application (in powder and paste form) and read-to-use Plasters for mechanical

spraying (in paste form), all of which are available via merchants (for a full list of stockists please check www.beissier.eu). The Bagar Airliss product range features various ready-to-use water-based sprayapplied levellers, surfacers and jointing compounds for internal walls and ceilings. The Bagar Spray Applied plaster has been described as “quicker, easier and more efficient” than traditional plastering methods and has made a significant impression on users since its release, with more and more customers investing in the products across the UK. Meanwhile, the Prestonett range comprises plasters suitable for every conceivable requirement in the preparation of substrates (filling, levelling and smoothing), and Beissier holds the esteemed position as the second largest company of its kind based in France. Beissier operates via its competent logistics supplier based in Thurrock that provides the necessary warehousing facilities. This process optimises efficiency and convenience for the client as it includes the processing of orders as well as a direct to site delivery service, which effectively cuts out delivery costs for its merchants whilst enabling a competitive price for the end users. “Our main plan for the future is to continue innovating and producing trade quality products,” Aaron said when asked to detail what the next few years hold for Beissier. “Exports are an important part of this as this is integral to our success, and ideally the goal is to achieve sales volumes that would justify a production facility in the UK, but momentarily we are still a long way from achieving this. “As the construction industry is still fairly buoyant I believe the prospect for products such as the ready to use Spray Applied plaster is very positive and every new project where this sort of material and process is used shows off the benefits v traditional methods. Although the UK is a very traditional market and contractors may appear slow to change, change is slowly happening and we look forward to the future readily – for Beissier it is onwards and upwards from here!”

Trade Association Excellence

Setting the Standards in Foam Insulation Promoting the benefits of spray applied and injected polyurethane foam whilst ensuring best practice with the provision of reliable and friendly installers is what the British Urethane Foam Contractors Association (BUFCA) does best. The nationally recognised trade association has formed an impressive membership base comprising many qualified sprayed and injected polyurethane foam contractors and equipment suppliers. Its approved group of industry professionals are trained specifically to meet the highest standards within the polyurethane foam market, so customers employing a BUFCA member can rest assured that the services they receive will be of the best possible quality.

Keith West & Peter Bristlow celebrate 30th Birthday of BUFCA

further reassurance a dedicated survey is completed before installation takes place to ascertain that the building fabric is sound, with any necessary rectification works carried out.

The reputable organisation also works in accordance with its supplier members to regulate the sector and tutors new and existing installers to ensure they are fully knowledgeable of all associated areas (support includes equipment training, onsite commissioning and continual back-up and guidance from the equipment and PU foam supplier members). Installers are instructed to comply with the Association’s Code of Professional Practice, which aims to further excellent technical and professional conduct and encourages the development of solid relationships between members and their clients. For

6

The installer members at BUFCA are eligible to apply for a 25 year warranty for domestic injected polyurethane cavity wall insulation projects, set up to cover both ECO and Green Deal funded projects and privately financed work. This contract is outlined to provide a sense of confidence for customers and becomes effective if there is an issue with the installation or the product and the installer or product manufacturer has ceased to trade. BUFCA strives to endorse spray applied and injected polyurethane foam, which has been duly noted for its many beneficial characteristics. The high performance insulant can be used in outbuildings, farm buildings, warehousing, and many other commercial and industrial buildings to stabilise structure and make energy efficiency savings whilst reducing the carbon footprint and increasing comfort. The utilisation of closed cell polyurethane foams for building insulation has been around for a number of years but an open cell option has recently become available. Although this suggests an advance in the market, the introduction of this new system has unfortunately led to confusion between architects, specifiers and building consultants, who aren’t completely clear on how these varieties differ.

BUFCA – key representatives for the closed cell industry – has the necessary expertise required to fill in the gaps for those unsure of the merits these separate resources can bring. Closed cell sprayed or injected polyurethane foam material provides one of the highest insulation values commercially available and is extensively used for roof insulation and cavity wall stabilisation courtesy of its capability to adhere to building substrate and set quickly to form a rigid layer. Polyurethane foam outperforms all other forms of cavity fill because the moulding of itself to the building fabric means air leakage is reduced to zero, sealing out draughts with an exceptional level of thermal performance. Being water-resistant ensures the material remains dry and the insulant acts as a barrier preventing floods from ravaging the building through penetration of the walls. This inevitably makes sprayed and injected closed cell polyurethane foam the solution of choice for marine applications; little impact is made on the useable space within the boat, water will not absorb and bonds form directly to the substrate with no voids or joints for condensation or cold bridging. Although the open cell alternative lacks the high insulation properties present in closed cell materials, they have prominent advantages in regards to their enhanced sound attenuation qualities. They are also more suitable for usage in environments whereby more air and vapour is required into the interior of a building. It is important

to note, however, that open cell foams don’t have the same fire performance as closed cell variants, so they should never be left exposed (as a matter of caution). Excitingly, BUFCA recently celebrated its 30th anniversary; a significant achievement that acts as a testament to the association’s great worth and longevity as a leader shaping the sprayed polyurethane foam industry for the better. This important event was celebrated by members at their annually arranged general meeting in Derbyshire earlier this year and marks BUFCA’s journey to success; three decades of acknowledged operation is an accurate indicator of just how much the trade body has progressed from its humble beginnings as an association eager to make a difference within the insulation and stabilisation of building fabric (and other applications). After attending the gathering in March, BUFCA Chairman Peter Bristow commented, “As a small trade association, we are pleased to have reached this important milestone. Now we can build on our solid foundations to further develop the polyurethane foam market across a range of sectors.” T +44 (0)1428 870150 info@bufca.co.uk www.bufca.co.uk

Rainwater Harvesting & Green Perimeter Solutions News

‘IVY’ got a good feeling about this… After another super turnout at the recent Greenbuild EXPO in Manchester, we were delighted with the interest in our products. Our Ivy Green Screens were a big focal point again this year, they were used as area dividers and backgrounds throughout the show, which allowed attendees to get up close and see the product in its raw form.

After the initial flurry as the doors opened there was a steady flow of attendees throughout both days, enquires coming in from large commercial developers and smaller domestic property owners. We discussed forthcoming projects with some of our visitors and listened to issues they were experiencing for finding ‘urban greening solutions’ particularly where

The Sigma rainwater harvesting unit from WISY® AG

planning departments were involved. The show provided us with the ideal platform to demonstrate the many different uses that our products can provide, this was very well received and has provided us with new contacts, on which to hopefully build new working relationships with. For more information about our products

and services, please call us on: +44 (0)845 504 8211 or +44 (0)1530 560656 to see how we can help on your project.

The Sigma rainwater harvesting unit from WISY® AG is extremely versatile and is suitable for most domestic installations, both for new properties and also for retro-fitting into an existing one. It is also ideal for use with above ground tanks, as the pump is located within the unit that sits inside the house so is not vulnerable to frost. The neat and compact design houses an exceptionally quiet pump, advanced Zeta control unit and a small cistern for the backup from the mains water supply. Mains water back-up is achieved via a small break tank built into the Sigma unit. This mini break tank accepts the mains water supply and provides the required statutory air gap to prevent the cross contamination of mains water supply. As of April 2016, all Sigma units are WRAS Approved, one of very few such products to obtain this distinction. Having the mains water supply go to the pumping unit rather than to the main storage tank has certain advantages, particularly where used with an above ground storage tank. The system can be switched to run from the mains supply only should you wish and is extremely quiet in operation. The award winning Zeta control unit has a remarkably low standby power consumption of only 0.2 watt. With most pump controllers having a permanent power consumption of 8 watts or more, this represents an excellent cost saving as well as a significant CO2 reduction. It also has advanced diagnostic capabilities and programmable running settings. The Sigma unit is built from the best possible components and with the quality engineering that is typical of WISY® – the top German rainwater experts. Product Innovation Award

Innovative Cable & Asset Management Here at Building and Construction Review, we enjoy highlighting the hard work of exemplary organisations, commending teams for their professionalism and efforts in promoting products of great purpose and value. Subsequently, we are incredibly pleased to present Cabletrail Ltd with our duly deserved Product Innovation award and tell you more about its exceptional cable management solution.

since led to the purchase of a fibre optic laser engraver, which offers the option of bespoke product identification, and the commission of a new multi-impression moulding tool with robotic operation for commercial custom. The group are currently focusing on the development of a bigger version of Cabletrail capable of holding cable up to 32mm after receiving requests for a large scale product suitable for marine, road and railway usage.

Based in Harrogate North Yorkshire, the contemporary company was only established in 2015 and yet has already made a significant impact with its portfolio of problem-solving products. Although the Cabletrail prototype itself had been around for a couple of years it wasn’t until August last year when the assets were purchased and a business established, as it took several months for a strong marketing and sales strategy to be devised.

With Cabletrail, you can reduce installation times and costs whilst maximising health and safety in any industrial environment, as the quick identification of assets and defective cables is made possible with colour coding and application-appropriate fixtures. Feel free to find out more by using the contact information supplied below; the Cabletrail team will be more than happy to help.

Cabletrail specialises in the provision of products that augment safety and asset management, enabling organisations to improve efficiency and productivity on site. The most notable of solutions is Cabletrail, an original patented system that allows better organisation of temporary or semi-permanent cables. Incorporating a unique reverse hook, the equipment makes the overall process more resourceful as cables can be quickly loaded and locked into a row with great ease, and it can be surface mounted directly or attached to poles and columns with zip ties. The modernised alternative to traditional trunking and tray work comes with additional operational features such as RFID chip. Its flexibility in positioning – being able to function vertically or horizontally on walls ceiling and floors – means the product is suitable for safe cable handling in multiple applications. Usable in semi-permanent and permanent installations, Cabletrail can adapt accordingly to seamlessly slot into settings such as construction sites, events, warehouses, outdoor engineering works, offshore and mining.

T +44 (0)1423 209010 enquires@cabletrail.com www.cabletrail.com “We look at not only improving the safety element of a site but also improving the site efficiency,” explained Director, Nigel Myers. “Many companies offering cable management products just distribute products to move the cable from one place to another, but we work with businesses to develop their products to fit with the unique environment. Take Cabletrail as a prime example: each cable is individually isolated and therefore can be managed independently by type, contractor or function.” Innovation is one of Cabletrail’s main constants. As the team behind the brand have strong backgrounds in engineering, the professionals are continuously looking for ways to develop more exciting products to help employees overcome everyday challenges in the workplace. Company of the Year

The renewables partner of choice Building and Construction Review is extremely proud to present its highly prestigious and richly deserved Company of the Year profile to GI Energy. The business, which is based in Coventry, is renowned for being the UK’s foremost provider of renewable energy solutions. Its inception in 2000 makes GI Energy the longest trading heat pump installer in the country and in this time its team have managed to install over a staggering 250MW of renewable systems across the UK (ranging from 6kW to 10MW systems).

for clients representing the commercial, healthcare, residential, public sector and infrastructure sectors and have helped to maximize energy savings and significantly reduce corporate carbon footprints.” The company’s diverse portfolio of technical solutions can be dissected into the following categories: ground source heat pumps, air source heat pumps, CHP (Combined Heat & Power) and solar. The skill that really sets GI apart though is its ability to integrate these different energy sources through bespoke controls packages. The sustainable systems are provided with the client’s individual circumstances in mind, meaning the solutions are implemented accordingly to receive the best possible results in line with specific build or retrofit requirements.

2015 was a year of substantial change for GI Energy. One of the most notable differences was the introduction of a new management team, which was assembled to enable the business to place a clearer focus on multi-technologies. This in turn impacts customers for the better, as they can reap the advantages of a more refined customer service; having the option of continued contact (if required) post-delivery to make the most out of the systems installed.

estates with similar energy requirements; a process that will prove most useful to customers such as grocers, housing associations, care homes and student accommodation facilities. The third and final pillar is the emphasis on the aftersales and maintenance optimisation team: this means clients will get the full benefit of installed systems through performance optimization regimes and maintenance programmes.

“From the very beginning GI Energy has set out to deliver the best-in-class, ground source and air source heat pump solutions,” commented Stuart Lawrie, CEO at GI Energy. “We design, engineer, install and maintain leading edge innovative renewable heating and cooling systems. Our blend of skills and experience allows us to deliver specially tailored solutions for our clients. “We have continually challenged conventional thinking to configure best-in-class renewable energy systems. These have been developed and installed

The new team, which includes a new technical & operations director, finance director and Stuart himself – will allow GI Energy to grow and promote its new strategic direction. Going forwards, GI Energy will be rolling out its new three-pronged strategy. The first focus is on the deployment of multi-technology solutions, which will see the company diversify its service areas to help clients to save both carbon and money. The second element revolves around the deployment of single technological solutions across building

The advanced aftercare service comes courtesy of the company’s highly experienced field engineers directed by GI’s in house controls and building management systems team. This service starts with a basic feasibility study, and continues through full installation of the entire system, testing and commissioning and integration with a bespoke control system that enables full ongoing system optimisation to ensure usage of the right renewable energy sources to maximize cost savings and carbon reduction. However complex the system, even where retail and commercial office heating and cooling solutions are linked, the company ensures designs, and ongoing maintenance and monitoring

can maintain performance and respond to changing demands. Stuart concluded, “We want to portray GI Energy as a business that doesn’t just install solutions and leave it there; we want to be renowned for our interest in optimising our solutions performance by maintaining them so they work continuously to their full effect. Our strategy now includes promoting our services as a multi-technology organisation – providing air source heat pumps, CHP (Combined Heat & Power) and solar solutions as opposed to just ground source heat pumps. “Our main aim is to grow and expand the company whilst developing our services and continuing to provide an outstanding level of customer service. We believe heat pumps are underplayed as part of the UK’s approach to reducing carbon emissions. With the government committed to supporting the heat pump market and with more people becoming aware of the many benefits of heat pumps, we feel this will gradually change over the years and see a fantastic opportunity in the UK for us to grow on the back of this expanding market. It is a positive time for this industry and something we, as a team, are extremely passionate about. “We are incredibly proud of what we have achieved, particularly over the last 12-18 months which is now being recognized by our success in winning national awards for our work. Thanks to our incredibly dedicated staff, GI has seen sales grow by over 15% in the past year and we are quite rightly pleased with our achievements so far.” T +44 (0)24 7667 3131 enquiries@gienergy.net www.gienergy.net

Inta goes HIPER for heat interface units Inta has introduced its ‘HIPER’ high performance heat interface unit (HIU), designed to deliver heating and hot water whilst improving energy efficiency and minimising costs in multi-dwelling developments. Installed in shared residential buildings, the HIU distributes heating and domestic hot water from a central plant system to individual properties. By removing the need for each area to have a conventional boiler, gas flue and hot water cylinder, the interface units dramatically reduce build costs for developers. Inta has worked to develop a product that has more features and benefits than any other HIU on the market. HIPER HIU boasts a factory-set, non-electric temperature control valve which prevents risk of scalding in the event of a power supply failure, as well as features the most advanced dual-speed PID control (patent pending) of any unit, intelligently controlling the heat into the plate heat exchangers by electronic modulation of a PICV (pressure independent control valve). A PICV is three valves in one: a differential pressure control valve, two-port flow regulating valve and a flow regulation valve. One PICV replaces three separate valves that would otherwise be required to maintain the maximum level of system control so the HIU

can operate effectively. The HIPER HIU PICV valve can maintain control up to a pressure differential of 4 bar. PICVs are not familiar to all at this time, so there is bound to be some confusion amongst those who are not so well informed. For instance, modulating valves are not uncommon, but at no time can they be claimed to function as a PICV. These simple modulating valves have differential pressure capabilities of not much more than 1.5 bar, so control capability is limited, and an additional DPCV is required to be added to the installation at extra cost in product, installation and commissioning. External Power – Whatever the weather

RECYFIX® MONOTEC – A new monolithic drainage system with a high attenuation volume

Greenbrook understand that with an increasing amount of time being spent outdoors with many more exterior electrical appliances being used (such as hot tubs and water features) all calling for safe, reliable outdoor sockets, switches, RCD’s, spurs and timers; their range of Power X weatherproof accessories are just the job.

Hauraton Limited have introduced into the UK, RECYFIX® MONOTEC, their new high capacity channel system for the surface drainage of pavements, bicycle routes, car/van parks and roadways in and around residential, commercial and light industrial areas where the channels need to have high lateral strength, are capable of withstanding continuous compressive loads and where ease of installation is a major consideration.

These IP66 weatherproof fittings offer a clear cover for easy visibility, a simple cable entry at the base and a substantial clip closure to ensure the lid remains clamped shut whilst in use. Able to withstand even the severest weather conditions the Power X range is suitable for use in rain, snow and in areas where there is pressure hose water sprayed. The units are even protected against dust contamination and are u/v protected so they will not deteriorate in the sunlight. Peter Ratcliffe, Sales Director of GreenBrook, said, “In the commercial environment IP66 compliant sockets are already in routine use and their specification forms part of any responsible risk assessment. With the wide range of products within our Power X

range, we can offer something suitable for virtually any commercial or domestic outdoor application.” Available now Contact T +44 (0)1279 772700 info@greenbrook.co.uk www.greenbrook.co.uk

The RECYFIX® MONOTEC one metre long channel component is of a sturdy monolithic design where the grating and the tongue and groove linking system are integral to the channel moulding. The whole unit is made of tough, virtually unbreakable polypropylene (PP) formulated to be very resistant to daily temperature fluctuations from frost conditions to strong sunlight, including the Ultra Violet (UV) spectrum. PP is naturally resistant to deicing salt. Complying with the requirements of EN 1433, the PP is given its UV resistance by adding just sufficient carbon black as a stabiliser so that the structural strength of the material is unaffected and a consistent appearance is maintained. MONOTEC channels are offered in two nominal grating widths of 100 and 200mm, both suitable for a loading category of up to Class D400. The

desirable where there is a high risk of silting as the increased flow will help wash debris towards the system’s Inspection/Trash Box.

100mm channels are available in three overall heights; 230, 280 and 380mm and provide channel cross-sections of 190.5cm2, 245.5cm2, and 355.5cm2 respectively. The largest 200mm channel, which only weighs 16.2kg, has a crosssection of 746.1cm2 and so has an attenuation volume in excess of 74 litres per metre. The three sizes of 100mm channels can be arranged in a step-fall arrangement with different channel heights connected by special transition adaptors that ensure the water drains away smoothly and quietly with the increased flow velocity playing a considerable role in cleaning the channel run. The step-fall arrangement may be

Ingenious grating design… In 2010, Hauraton introduced FIBRETEC®, a new design of moulded slot grating on their RECYFIX® PRO range of channels. This heelsafe grating has super smooth, elliptical slot openings where the moulded bars have slightly raised triangular bosses along their outside edges. As well as providing an elegant appearance, this feature ensures surface water is directed into the slots helping eliminate any cross-flow over the grating. A grating with the same design has now been incorporated in the RECYFIX® MONOTEC which helps optimise its attenuation volume. The introduction of RECYFIX® MONOTEC means in any project, there are now three different types of channel in the Haruaton range that can be specified with the same grating design. At the Heart of Flow Control The Frese story began in 1944 in Denmark with founder Børge Frese. Over six decades later and the manufacturing facilities and headquarters are still situated in Slagelse and the Frese name is still running, as Børge’s three grandchildren Kim, Claus and Tina are the current owners of the company. The UK sales branch was established by Stephen Hart – who now holds the title as Managing Director – in 2004 and can be found in Burscough, Lancashire. The Frese group is now an international brand, having built itself a widespread network of sales subsidiaries, branch offices, sales partners and distributors across 50 different countries. The renowned specialists manufacture and distribute pressure independent flow & temperature control valves, heat interface units and associated equipment for commercial, institutional and large residential buildings, predominantly serving the building services and district heating segments of the HVAC sector of the construction industry. Prefabricated components can also be provided, incorporating complimentary technology for packaged heat exchangers and terminal unit applications.

us by Johnni Frese, the son of our founder. My particular favourite is “It’s not MAGIC… it’s just common sense!” although it has taken us more than a decade to persuade a somewhat conservative UK building services sector that this statement applies to our core dynamic valve technology.” As well as offering balancing & control products, bypass units and thermostatic circulation valves, turnkey design, installation, operation and maintenance services can also be undertaken courtesy of the Frese District Heating business. The brand has recently expanded its regulation sizes to include Fixed Orifice Double Regulating Valves (FODRVs), Adjustable Constant Flow Regulators (CFRs), Differential Pressure Control Valves (DPCVs) and Pressure Independent Controls Valves (PICVs) which can be supplemented by its range of actuators. Advanced electronically controlled heat interface units and substations are also new additions. When asked about the company’s progressive path, Stephen concluded, “We have maintained an annual growth rate in the UK of 23% per year over the last 5 years which has created many new job opportunities within Frese UK. We intend to continue this trajectory. We have dispatched more than 20,000 MODULA prefabricated fan coil valve assemblies in 2015, each of which has included our flagship OPTIMA COMPACT PICV: this is significantly more than our previous best year and is clear indication of the increasing market acceptance of this technology.” T +44 (0)1704 896012 info@frese.co.uk www.frese.co.uk

Manufacturing facility at Frese, Slagelse “We specialise in the production and supply of components and equipment for, and the implementation of, energy efficient hydronic heating, cooling and domestic hot water systems,” detailed Stephen. “Our patented pressure independent flow and temperature control valves are designed to provide a comfortable, controllable and responsive indoor climate with a minimum of energy consumption by boilers, chillers, pumps and other plant equipment.” “In addition, our heat interface units and other packaged equipment feature Frese technology for efficient regulation of hydronic (wet) heating and cooling systems and precise and safe domestic hot water distribution. Building Fabric of the Future

New Sudstech Paving offers unrivalled porosity

SuperSIPs are a Dynamic Structural Insulated Panel manufacturer based near Ipswich. The owners have over 50 years’ experience in the building industry and almost 20 years’ in SIPs and associated industries.

Sudstech is one of the latest porous paving products introduced to the SUDS (Sustainable Urban Drainage Solutions) market, with the impressive ability to transfer up to 50,000 litres of water per square metre per hour.

“The demand for thermally efficient housing has resulted in a major increase for our company,” commented Owner, Leslie Crossley. “At SuperSIPs, we strive to provide the best. With SIPs being suitable for such a wide variety of buildings, no job is too small or too large. We can help with the integration or combination of many complimentary products from ground source heat pumps to underfloor heating, from mechanical ventilation & heat recovery, to solar hot water. SIPs provide the ideal building fabric for the incorporation of many energy and money saving products.” SIPs (Structural Insulated Panels) are produced using a facing of OSB (oriented standard board) with a filling of PUR (polyurethane) insulation. These panels provide a labour and material-saving alternative to traditional timber-frame or masonry construction. SIPs provide continuous insulation when manufactured, rather than insulation being added between Studs in Timber Frame, for example. This type of panel has been in use for over 60 years and they offer an energy efficient building system that substantially reduces on-site labour, time and cost.

SuperSIPs has recently completed extensive trails on the new fire proof SIPs with British Gypsum and, using their Glassrock Rigidur H, managed to achieve 59 minutes in a 30 minute fire test at a UKAs test centre. In addition to their advanced product range, SuperSIPs offer a full design and engineering service and can custom build panels if required. RTA (ready to assemble) panels can be provided by pre-cutting rough opening, edges, angles and other complex shapes which are then delivered to site, ready for installation. Contact T +44 (0)1433 736023 www.supersips.uk.com

The highly porous, low-maintenance material is created using sustainable products and is designed to allow the natural infiltration method of the water cycle for an easy and environmentally-friendly drainage system. Suitable for all private and public applications, including domestic driveways, public footpaths, golf clubs and car parks, Sudstech can be used as an alternative to standard asphalt hard landscaping materials, whilst offering the same aesthetics and durability as some of the most established products in the market, with the added benefit of a costeffective water management service.

for a sleek, porous surface that can withstand all usages without compromising the quality of the material.

The porous material is created using natural stones sourced in the UK and can be specified in a wide range of colours and finishes, offering a solution to complement or contrast with any architectural colour scheme. The coloured stones are combined with a specially developed resin, which allows rainfall to evenly saturate through the surface into the ground and eventually finding its way to the water course. Sudstech uses varying grades of angular aggregates to deliver maximised strength and durability

Following many years of research, development and testing, Sudstech conforms to the latest SUDS legislations created alongside the Water Management Act 2010, which requires porous materials to completely prevent surface water run-off and build up. With its large water capacity, Sudstech can contribute to the control of flooding caused by climate change in domestic areas and other environmental impacts of hard paving water build up. Further information on Sudstech is available from Langford Direct Ltd. on: +44 (0)161 2121617, by emailing: info@sudstech.co.uk or by visiting the company’s website at: www.sudstech.co.uk

Building Classifieds ICYNENE SPRAY FOAM INSULATION PRODUCTS The Icynene Insulation System is a series of soft, flexible, breathable spray foam insulation products, Icynene insulation is ideally suited for lofts, flat roofs, timber frame and sound insulation. Icynene can be applied directly to breathable or non-breathable roofing felts and recently received BBA certification for this application. When sprayed in place Icynene expands completely filling all cavities and voids creating a sealed building envelope which eliminates air leakage/infiltration. Air leakage/infiltration can account for up to 50% of the heat loss from a building. Unlike other foams, Icynene’s unique formulation is 100% water blown and therefore contains no harmful blowing agents, volatile organic compounds, HCFCs, HFAs, HFCs or formaldehyde.
