GED Class Needs Volunteers
979-595-2801 ext. 2313 Everyone who experiences success had a little help along the way. Help others achieve their GED. The Brazos Valley Council of Governments GED program is seeking individuals who love teaching and helping in a classroom setting. Volunteers assist in providing instruction for
out-of-school youths and adults in preparatory classes for the General Educational Development test, and basic literacy. Volunteers work to ensure educational activities will provide a complete package of services to help students pass the GED test. One-on-one tutoring is also needed. These positions take place in the evenings at the Center for Regional Services on 29th Street in Bryan (close to KBTX studio) and are a wonderful opportunity to help others to succeed - perfect for retired educators.
open on the 3rd Saturday of each month. Volunteers help organize food boxes and supplements such as eggs, meat, bread, and fresh produce to distribute to clients as they drive up in cars. Volunteers help direct traffic, verify client paperwork and distribute food from an outside utility building. Volunteers must be able to work out of doors, stand for extended length of time, bend, and lift boxes of food. Volunteers helping with client paperwork just need a smile, a love for others and a willingness to work.
979-823-5127 Founded in 1990, Elder-Aid’s mission is to “ensure that the elderly in the Brazos Valley remain independent and in the community for as long as possible.” We accomplish this mission through a variety of “hands-on” help for the elderly. Elder-aid is involved in many projects throughout the year. Almost 100% of these require volunteers. The opportunities are categorized into six groups; transportation, home repairs, yard work, home visits, housekeeping, and office work. Volunteer Drivers are needed to provide transportation for a senior citizen the doctor, dentist or grocery store.

Helping Hands Valet Parking
979-774-1298 Waldenbrooke Estates is a senior living community located across from CHI St. Joseph Health Regional Hospital in Bryan which provides independent living services to senior citizens. The “Helping Hands” volunteer program is for
residents with walkers. They need their walkers to get to the dining room, but once there, walkers can be a hazard to other residents as they make their way to the tables. Helping Hands volunteers valet park the walkers and bring walkers to the residents when they are finished with the meal. The nice perk for volunteers is they can enjoy a wonderful lunch provided by Waldenbrooke.
Historical Tour Guides George Bush Presidential Library and Museum in College Station celebrates the life and career of our nation’s 41st president. The museum opened in 1997 and exhibits more than 90,000 artifacts, including a portion of the Berlin Wall, thousands of gifts from heads of state around the world and a WWII-era torpedo bomber aircraft. This, along with wonderful traveling exhibits, makes this a destination for approximately 140,000 visitors per year. Volunteers are needed especially for weekend shifts. The shifts are only 2 1/2 hours long and are for work in the museum, greeting visitors, starting the film in the media room, and taking photos in the Oval Office. If you have time to help on weekends, call Sharon Merrell at 979- 691-4012.

Bring a buddy along, it’s a great way to spend time with friends or family - have a fun day of giving! You can sign up for as many or as few days as you would like, they just need a consistent schedule.

Senior Christmas
The Annual RSVP Shirley’s Senior Christmas Project is a service the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program provides to the homebound and nursing home residents throughout the Brazos Valley area. They deliver several holiday gift bags filled with requested items. With Shirley’s Senior Christmas Project, RSVP volunteers visit nursing homes and provide forms for residents to request what they want and give the sizes they wear. RSVP is able to do this project because of the generosity of many, from sewing groups who make dresses and lap robes to those who donate individual items or contribute funds. They need new or gently used clothing and other items or funds to purchase requested items. Another special need they have is for help in delivering the gift bags. If you have a van that can hold up to 50 gift bags and are available any weekday during the first two weeks of December, they could use a hand. They deliver to nursing homes throughout the Brazos Valley region. To donate to the annual Senior Christmas project bring your donations to the Center for

They also answer the phone and provide directions. There is really
a wide variety of opportunities to volunteer, from helping in the gift shop, making items for the gift shop, assisting with archival of donations and fundraising events. Call Linda Russell at 979- 2893378.
Thirty Days of Drivers - Van Drivers
Just imagine not being able to drive to the doctor, pharmacy or grocery store whenever you needed? When an elderly person is unable to drive or without transportation, they must rely on others. Fortunately, the Health Resource Centers in Grimes, Leon, Madison and Burleson counties have vans for volunteer drivers to provide this service, but more volunteer drivers are needed. If 30 volunteers would drive just one day a month, 12 times a year, the staff at the Health Resource Center would be able to schedule rides for everyone needing transportation. Giving a day a month to serve as a volunteer driver is a great way to honor the memory of a parent or family member who gave their time to help others. Continue the legacy of service; call today and be part of the “30 Days of Drivers” team.To volunteer, call: Burleson County (Caldwell): Kathy Jones, 979- 567-3255 Burleson County (Somerville): Sherii Alexander 979- 567-2251 Grimes County: Betty Feldman 936- 870-4575 Leon County: Gloria McCarty 903536-3687
