Tips for a Successful Self-Move Few things in life are more arduous and exhausting than moving. While moving into a new home can be exciting, the process of moving is rarely enjoyable. Such is the reason many people turn to moving companies when it comes time to change addresses. However, moving companies are an added expense and not right for everyone. Many people choose to self-move to save some money. The process of self-moving can be intimidating, particularly for people whose move will take more than one day. Anticipating problems beforehand is often a great way to ensure the move goes off smoothly and with as little stress as possible. ∙ Truck rental: When self-moving, many people find themselves in a race against time to get everything packed onto and then off the truck so they can return the truck on time and avoid what is often hefty late fees. Such a race only adds more stress to an already draining day. Particularly for people whose move will be more than one day, inquire about how much it will cost to keep the truck an extra day. This will eliminate the stress
When You Can Own For Less?
of getting everything done by a set time. ∙ Map your driving route: Even if you’re moving down the street, the route you take might have to be longer than you expect thanks to factors you didn’t consider ahead of time. One of the more common problems self-movers encounter is low overpasses that their truck cannot fit under or roads that don’t allow commercial traffic. This can be disastrous for a number of reasons. If not anticipated beforehand, you won’t realize the obstacle until you drive up to it. Turning around a large truck on a busy road can be challenging and dangerous. Driving on restricted roads can also earn you a traffic ticket. Also, researching and finding a new route can be timeconsuming, a big problem if you need to get the truck back by a certain time. Combat such problems before you encounter them by driving your planned route ahead of time.

How to ‘green up’ your apartment, office or dorm with houseplants (ARA) - Looking for a fresh new look for your home or office or want to add some color and cool for your college digs? Houseplants are always in style.
Green-up your space with living walls. If you have limited space or want a visually dramatic, high impact design for a room, living walls are the ticket.
For an easy transformation for any space, houseplants add high impact and eco flair that rival expensive makeovers. Whether you choose orchids or Bonsai, houseplants fit any lifestyle, mood and taste.
Not only can they improve air quality, but they are quite a conversation piece, adding instant “wow factor” to any room.
From finding the perfect plant to decorating ideas at your fingertips, check out the new digital magazine GrowingStyle. This free download and app is your go-to resource for the hottest plants, green living tips, expert advice and lots of eco eye candy. Whether you’re a long time plant collector or novice, these tips from top garden experts show just how easily houseplants will “green up” your life. The air in there. Did you know that houseplants do double duty? They not only add beauty to indoor spaces but also clean our indoor air and remove nasty toxins from carpets, paint, household cleaners, printers and even furniture. “Besides what they give back in aesthetics, one of the greatest things houseplants do is provide much needed humidity in the winter months and freshen the air year round,” says Justin Hancock, editor of Better Homes and Gardens online (BHG.com). Plant hunter and expert, Mike Rimland, says that houseplants help clean indoor toxins commonly found in homes, apartments and offices. “What houseplants you choose and where they’re placed are important considerations to maximize air filtering benefits.” Rimland suggests houseplants like peace lilies for bathrooms and Sanseveria and Golden Pothos for your entryway and living spaces. “They’re easy to grow and can help remove volatile organic compounds found in cleaners, carpets and furniture like benzene, formaldehyde, acetone and xylene.” Set the mood. From added drama to a touch of whimsy, houseplants instantly liven up any room or office with natural beauty and add a funky touch of greenery to boxy dorm rooms. For happy plants, Rimland recommends you assess your rooms for optimal lighting conditions and care requirements, follow the plant care guidelines on the tags and choose plants that fit your lifestyle. Want to create a quick and easy upscale look or a serene retreat? Nothing beats orchids, arranged in simple or elaborate containers, for high impact drama and Zen-like simplicity. “As a great ‘everyman’ plant, orchids can’t be beat,” says Hancock. “Mini orchids are easy to grow and perfect for a centerpiece or a thing of beauty and tranquility alone on a windowsill.” 8 Apartment Guide Winter 2011
Rimland says that living green walls are a great way to maximize the benefits of houseplants to purify and beautify spaces. “Whether you buy one of the new kits available or have a professional install your living wall, your rooms will spring to life with living art you create.” Go green and groovy. Looking for fun and easy houseplants that are practically a no-brainer? Water-retaining, light-loving, easy-care succulents and cacti are virtually indestructible and come in many colors, shapes and varieties. So mix them up in containers for a visual feast that draws the eye and soothes the soul. “Succulents are great-looking, low maintenance plants that make it easy for everyone to bring the outdoors inside,” adds Hancock. For more ways to spruce up your home with the hottest houseplants and tips on decorating with a splash of sophisticated and refreshing greenery, visit www.growingstylemag.com.

Take the hassle out of settling in to your new apartment Meet new friends… but keep the old, too.
Moving can often be a very stressful experience. Last minute details, finances, packing and unpacking is enough to drive anyone insane. The hard part is already done, now you just need to start putting it all together. Here is some advice to help you as you settle in after your move.
Keep your old contacts but one of the best things about moving to a new neighborhood is meeting new people too! Churches, community classes and volunteer organizations are all great ways to meet new people.
Unpack one box at a time.
Establish a routine.
You might feel overwhelmed if you look at all your boxes and think that it all has to be done at once. Face it, that’s not going to happen. Unpack what you’re going to need first, like your clothing, alarm clock, toiletries and a few dishes. After a few hours of unpacking, relax and enjoy your new space. Put clean sheets on your bed and get a good night’s rest. Tomorrow, unpack a few more boxes. Take a week or so to completely unpack.
Get to know your neighborhood. Take a walk (or a drive) around your new area and explore. Go to a bookstore and check out the local scene. Take a trial class at the gym and decide if you’d like to join. Go the community center and pick up a calendar of events.
South College
Directions: From Texas Avenue and University Drive: go west to College Main Street. Turn right and go north on College Main Street. Country Place is located on the left.
Take care of necessary tasks. In about a week after your move, you should make sure that all your post-move business is settled. Each task you complete will bring you a sense of accomplishment. Each box you unpack is one less box. Take everything a step at a time and before you know it, it will be done!

Get back into a daily routine that is familiar to you. If you’re used to working out every morning before work, join a gym. Prepare some of your favorite meals and watch a television show you enjoy. Find the closest dry cleaners, grocery store and post office so that running errands won’t be like navigating through a maze.
Offering only the best in comfort and convenience. Our spacious apartments are within walking distance to A&M Campus, Northgate, and on the TAMU Shuttle & City Transit bus routes. Come relax by the pool with mature oak trees or entertain friends in the Clubhouse including a big TV screen.

∙ Don’t be a hero: At times, you might be tempted to lift certain items by yourself in the hopes of trimming some time from the move. However, moving is a marathon, not a track meet, and you don’t want to waste energy that you’ll need down the road. Heavier items should always be loaded and unloaded by a minimum of two people.
Self-Move from page 6
∙ Cover your valuables: When selfmoving for the first time, many people are appalled as to just how dirty most rental trucks are. If you haven’t planned on covering up nice furniture or other valuable items beforehand, it can be a big waste of time digging out blankets and covering everything up once you have the truck and are ready to go. With respect to cleanliness, expect the worst out of a rental truck, and protect valuable items accordingly.
∙ Lock it up: While moving trucks come with a lever that keeps the door shut, these levers aren’t locks. Anyone moving overnight should purchase a padlock to put on their truck to protect themselves from theft while they sleep.
∙ Load the heavy items at the front of the truck: The “front” of the truck is the wall closest to the truck’s cab. Load the heaviest items, such as dressers, tables and furniture, on first. When packed tightly against the wall, these items won’t move around once you start driving. Certain items, such as couches and mattresses, should be turned on end so they take up less space.
∙ Don’t forget entertainment: Oftentimes, a moving truck has the most basic of radios, with no cassette or CD player and sometimes only an AM radio. Anyone whose move is a considerable distance should bring along a radio with a CD player to help combat the boredom.

Tips for furnishing your college habitat (ARA) - Heading to college this fall? Whether it’s your first year or fourth, you’re sure to learn some things about college life that you wish you’d known before walking on campus. Here’s one of those secrets: College habitats are almost universally small, and how you furnish yours will have a big impact on how well you enjoy and perform in college. Dorm rooms are notoriously snug spaces. Even if you live off-campus in an apartment, you’ll likely be sharing it with multiple roommates, which can make the space feel small. You’ll want furnishings that fit your space, maximize efficiency and that can hold up to the rigors of college living. As you’re getting ready to furnish your college habitat, keep these pointers in mind:
Size counts
Because your personal space is likely to be very limited, it’s important to keep furnishings to scale. Dorm rooms usually already have a bed that fits appropriately into the space. In an apartment, a smaller bed will almost certainly fit better in any bedroom, especially if you’re sharing your bedroom with a roommate. Twin is in when it comes to right-sizing your bed for college living. Your college habitat will also likely include a desk. In reality, you probably won’t do much studying there, so your desk can be a great place for your flat screen TV. Be sure to secure it with a mount. Products like Sanus’ Full-Motion Desk Mount make it easy to desk-mount flat screens or computer monitors up to 30 inches, without the need for any installation tools. Or you can opt for a mount kit. Sanus offers one that attaches to furniture such as a desk or dresser, to provide a more finished look. Both options are ideal when mounting your TV on the wall isn’t possible.
turned into more storage space. Just be sure to use devices designed to safely raise the bed, rather than doing it yourself with a few phone books.
Increasing efficiency
Limited space also means that whatever you put in it needs to function efficiently. Items that have multiple uses, such as an alarm clock that doubles as an iPod charger, save space by doing jobs that would otherwise require several things to accomplish. You can find floor lamps that feature attached shelving, laundry bags that double as a backpack, and electric brooms that sweep your dorm room and your car efficiently. Efficiency and safety go hand in hand. Often, the devices you’ll need to make college life easier and more enjoyable, like a PC, alarm clock, TV and stereo, come with a lot of cords that can be a trip hazard. Cable Tunnels are a great way to keep cords out of the way and keep rooms looking tidy. Easy to install, you can use the tunnels to conceal cords. And they can be painted to match your wall color. Furnishing your college habitat will require planning and possibly some downsizing, but ensuring that everything in your environment fits properly and works efficiently will help make college life a little bit easier.
If you live in a dorm, you’ll probably sit on the bed most often. But for those times when you’re having guests, a folding chair or two comes in handy. You can store them under your bed and then bring them out only when needed.
Storage strategies
When was the last time you saw a dorm room with a walk-in closet? If you’re living on campus, you’ll be lucky if your digs have any closet at all. Lack of closet space is also a perennial problem for apartment dwellers. If you are fortunate enough to have a closet, be sure to use it; clothes stored on hangers take up far less room than those wadded up on the floor or crammed into a drawer. Most likely, however, your college living space will require smart storage strategies. Under-bed storage can be a lifesaver in college habitats. You can squeak out some extra space by using risers that lift your bed a few more inches off the floor, inches that can be The Eagle www.theeagle.com 15
