The process of self-moving can be intimidating, particularly for people whose move will take more than one day. Anticipating problems beforehand is often a great way to ensure the move goes off smoothly and with as little stress as possible. ∙ Truck rental: When self-moving, many people find themselves in a race against
time to get everything packed onto and then off the truck so they can return the truck on time and avoid what is often hefty late fees. Such a race only adds more stress to an already draining day. Particularly for people whose move will be more than one day, inquire about how much it will cost to keep the truck an extra day. This will eliminate the stress of getting everything done by a set time.
∙ Map your driving route: Even if you’re moving down the street, the route you take might have to be longer than you expect thanks to factors you didn’t consider ahead of time. One of the more common problems self-movers encounter is low overpasses that their truck cannot fit under or roads that don’t allow commercial traffic. This can
be disastrous for a number of reasons. If not anticipated beforehand, you won’t realize the obstacle until you drive up to it. Turning around a large truck on a busy road can be challenging and dangerous. Driving on restricted roads can also earn you a traffic ticket. Also, researching and finding a new route can be time-consuming, a big problem if you need to get the truck back by a certain time. Combat such problems before you encounter them by driving your planned route ahead of time.

For those who rent, renters insurance covers damage to or loss of your personal property. Whether you rent from a house owner, a property manager, or a university (as a student living in a dorm), consider purchasing renters insurance.
Renters insurance can also protect against liability lawsuits or medical bills of guests injured in your apartment. Some landlords require you to purchase renters insurance. If so, this would be stipulated in your lease or lease riders.
Why do I need renters insurance? Landlords insure the physical apartment building against damage from occurrences such as fire, hail, and vandalism. But their insurance policy does not cover your belongings, so don’t expect the landlord to owe you payment should anything happen. Another reason to get renters insurance is to protect yourself against any accidents caused by other tenants.
There are two kinds of payouts: actual cash value and replacement cost coverage. Actual Cash Value This type of coverage pays an amount equal to the current cost to replace your items minus the depreciated value.
Replacement Cost Coverage This type of coverage pays you the amount it would cost to replace your lost or damaged property. You only get the money if you replace the items. There is also usually a limit on how much money you receive, and the premiums tend to be higher. I have a roommate? Do we each get our own policy? It depends on the policy. Some insurance companies offer one policy that covers multiple people. Others require each person to get a separate policy.

Take the hassle out of settling in to your new apartment Moving can often be a very stressful experience. Last minute details, finances, packing and unpacking is enough to drive anyone insane. The hard part is already done, now you just need to start putting it all together. Here is some advice to help you as you settle in after your move.
Get to know your neighborhood.
Unpack one box at a time.
Meet new friends…but keep the old, too.
You might feel overwhelmed if you look at all your boxes and think that it all has to be done at once. Face it, that’s not going to happen. Unpack what you’re going to need first, like your clothing, alarm clock, toiletries and a few dishes. After a few hours of unpacking, relax and enjoy your new space. Put clean sheets on your bed and get a good night’s rest. Tomorrow, unpack a few more boxes. Take a week or so to completely unpack.
Keep your old contacts but one of the best things about moving to a new neighborhood is meeting new people too! Churches, community classes and volunteer organizations are all great ways to meet new people.
Take care of necessary tasks.
In about a week after your move, you should make sure that all your post-move business is settled. Each task you complete will bring you a sense of accomplishment. Each box you unpack is one less box. Take everything a step at a time and before you know it, it will be done!
Establish a routine.

Take a walk (or a drive) around your new area and explore. Go to a bookstore and check out the local scene. Take a trial class at the gym and decide if you’d like to join. Go the community center and pick up a calendar of events.
