BRYAN/COLLEGE STATION CHAMBER OF COMMERCE
2013-2014 Annual Report
From the Boardroom
This has been a very exciting year for your Chamber of Commerce. We have continued to focus on our Mission Statement – to enhance the economic well-being of the businesses in the communities we serve - and this has led to many successful programs and events during the year. We have also seen an increase in our membership, and thanks to a lot of hard work by our volunteers and staff, we have exceeded our budget for the year. Our Annual Banquet, Economic Outlook Conference, Crawfish Boil and Lobsterfest events all exceeded expectations. Our Health & Wellness Committee held the first ever Water Cooler 5k Run & 3K Walk, and thanks to the participation of Texas A&M University, we were blown away by the more than 400 participants who attended the event. Our Chamber Day was one of the most successful to date, and I am pleased that over 100 volunteers participated in visiting almost 600 businesses to thank them for being in business in our community and to get a pulse of how our local businesses are faring in today’s economy. It was pleasing that more businesses expressed optimism in the economy, and more businesses were planning to hire new employees this year than in any previous year that we’ve included a survey as part of our visit. Once again, our Leadership programs excelled, and we continue to be considered one of the top chambers in the state from a legislative standpoint. I was privileged to lead our delegation to Washington D.C. this past May and am pleased to report to you that we have successfully maintained an outstanding reputation in our Nation’s Capital. It is amazing to see the access our chamber has to so many offices in Washington, and I want to personally thank Congressman Bill Flores for orchestrating an amazing day of visits with some of our most influential national leaders. It was also a joy to spend some time with members of the Waco Chamber of Commerce, who joined us for a couple of days in Washington as they attempt to strengthen their legislative program. It has been a year that I have enjoyed very much, and I want to personally thank the Chamber Executive Committee and Board of Directors for their commitment and their support of me. I also want to thank all of the outstanding volunteers who allow us to accomplish so much, particularly our incredible group of Ambassadors! They attend an unbelievable number of ribbon cuttings and chamber events and represent the chamber in an outstanding manner! I want to thank my lovely wife Kathy for her love and support this year and for all of the events she attended with me. And finally, I would like to thank the chamber staff for their commitment to their jobs and for their support of me and our Board of Directors. As our previous Board Chairman, Ben Downs of Bryan Broadcasting always reminds us, “The B/CS Chamber of Commerce is the only organization whose sole purpose is to help businesses in our cities grow.” As an organization we remain committed to growing our local businesses, and I am proud that I had an opportunity to play a role in maintaining that commitment.
Glen Brewer
Chairman, 2013-2014
It’s GREAT to live in Bryan/College Station! No matter what your lifestyle, there is something for everyone. And with NerdWallet’s recent placement of College Station as #2 and Bryan as #17 on their list of fastest growing cities in the nation and their placement of Bryan as #5 and College Station as #7 on their list of the most improved cities in the U.S since the recession, we had confirmed what we already knew—this is a great place to live and others are finding out about it. But not only is it a great place to live, it’s a great place to work. And your Bryan/College Station Chamber of Commerce is working hard to make that a reality for all. Our mission statement is: The Bryan/College Station Chamber of Commerce exists to enhance the economic well-being of the businesses in the community it serves. Our activities and events are focused on helping businesses be successful and in turn those businesses contribute to the success of the community. There are many businesses that can share success stories of how networking opportunities sponsored by the Chamber have helped them garner new clients and grow their business. Luncheons and seminars provide members with unique opportunities to learn about better ways to market their business, or how to tap into social media as a source for marketing. The list of benefits of being a Chamber member goes on and on with many of us having our own story. But the story I’d like to look at isn’t necessarily about the benefits that the Chamber brings to you, but rather the benefits that you bring to the Chamber. Certainly the Chamber is a unifying organization that brings our business community together—but YOU are the business that makes the Chamber. Each organization has something to offer and in turn brings something to our community that makes it successful. Yes, the Chamber is good for business—but YOU are good for the Chamber. Each month as we meet, we celebrate new businesses that have joined the Chamber and anticipate what they will bring to our community. As our community grows so does the need for new businesses. That new business creates a need for opportunities to join together as a business community to maintain those values and ideals that have made us what we are. Chamber President Royce Hickman stated: “The thing I’m so proud of is that even though we’re seeing growth, we still maintain that small town atmosphere and that spirit of caring and volunteerism that has made us so great.” For us to carry that atmosphere forward we must stay unified not only as a business community, but as a community of businesses and people united to channel growth that maintains common values. We truly are better together. YOU are good for the Chamber and good for our community. We truly appreciate what you do and the contributions you make. I look forward to this year as we continue to unite our efforts that will keep Bryan/College Station the great place it is to work, live, and raise our families! Thanks for all you do!

A word from our President It is a pleasure to present the sixteenth consecutive Annual Report of the Bryan/College Station Chamber of Commerce. We are happy to report that our local economy has continued to fare well overall and certainly better than most other communities. This has been a good year for your Chamber of Commerce, one filled with excitement and accomplishments. In this report you will be able to see that the year has been successful in terms of both our programs and our finances. We continue to focus on providing opportunities for our members to both promote their businesses and network. The year began with a successful and informative Annual Banquet where Dr. R. Bowen Lofton discussed the current and future impact of Texas A&M on our community. That was followed by two popular events that were very well attended: our annual Ag Breakfast with over 370 attendees (largest ever) and our annual Economic Outlook Conference with approximately 440 attendees. Other successful events that remain popular include our Epicurean Extravaganza, Job Fair, Ladies Nite and our annual LobsterFest & Golf Classic. This year our Community Softball Classic continued to focus on those who protect us each and every day. Once again, the Community Softball Classic was held at Olsen Field at Bluebell Park and matched our police officers against our fire fighters, Royce Hickman with bragging rights on the line. For the second year in a row, part of the proceeds went to the 100 Club, an organization that has put a President and CEO substantial amount of financial resources into our community supporting the families of those impacted by tragic events. We conducted several successful luncheons as well. First, our Economic Outlook Briefing Luncheon was an interesting and informative discussion on the impact of the oil and gas industry on the local community. Next, our Inner Circle Luncheon provided an interesting and educational presentation on the current situation in the Middle East by Ambassador Ryan Crocker. In addition, a luncheon was held that focused on the importance of voting in favor of Proposition #1 in order to provide much needed funding for the growing transportation needs in our State. Lastly, our “Lunch & Learn” education efforts continue to grow in popularity with our members. We held over one hundred Ribbon Cuttings this year, including numerous Deluxe Ribbon Cuttings, which remain popular with our members. Our Economic Development agreement with Brazos County was renewed, and for the second year in a row, they sponsored our annual “Chamber Day” in April. The event attracted over 120 volunteers who visited approximately 550 businesses. For the fourth year in a row, a short survey was part of the visit which provided Brazos County and your Chamber with very valuable information, which can be found on page 10. We remain committed to having a major focus on legislative affairs at the national, state and local levels. Our trip to Washington D.C. in May was possibly our best ever. Thanks to the efforts of Congressman Bill Flores and his staff, our delegation had an opportunity to spend 30 minutes with officials who would make an impressive list of “Who’s Who” in Washington circles. That list can be found on page 15. Our Legislative Affairs Committee is already working hard on the upcoming trip to Washington D.C., scheduled for May 4th through 7th, and the upcoming trip to Austin on February 3rd and 4th. It continues to be a source of great pride the Texas Association of Business called our Chamber one of the top three chambers in the State from a legislative standpoint. Financially, your Chamber finished the year with a bottom line that exceeded our budget for the fourteenth consecutive year, and we continue to maintain a healthy cash position. This success is the result of the efforts of so many. I want to thank the hundreds of volunteers who have, by their commitment, established this Chamber as one of the busiest and most outstanding Chambers in the State. I particularly appreciate the commitment and dedication of our Board of Directors, under the leadership of Board Chair, Glen Brewer, our Ambassadors, under the leadership of Jason Cornelius with Prosperity Bank, our Leadership Brazos Alumni Association, under the leadership of Scott Simpson and our extremely dedicated and committed staff, who, in spite of being shorthanded at times this year, still accomplish so much. We look forward to another strong year of accomplishments under the leadership of our Board of Directors, chaired by Rich White of HEB. If you are one of our many outstanding Chamber members, thank you for your commitment to our community and to your Chamber. If you are not a member, we invite you to call 260-5200 and join us today as we continue our efforts to provide an environment that gives every business in our community the best chance for SUCCESS!

Ambassador Program
The Ambassador program is a group of 42 Chamber member volunteers that graciously give their time to support the Chamber in so many ways. Some of the goals of the Ambassadors group are to strengthen the Chamber by recruiting new members, foster healthy relationships with new members by attending ribbon cuttings and Chamber events, as well as supporting the Chamber by volunteering on committees and assisting with events. It is estimated that over the past year, the Ambassador group donated over 2,000 volunteer hours to the Chamber of Commerce and their community.

Chamber Day Nearly 550 businesses were visited during the Bryan/College Station Chamber of Commerce’s Annual Chamber Day on March 27, 2014, marking another successful year for the program. Approximately 150 volunteers hit the B-CS streets in small groups. During “Chamber Day” visits, the Chamber and its volunteers took the opportunity to thank local businesses for doing business in Bryan and College Station, as well as to inquire about how the economy has affected them and how their business is doing overall. They also gave the businesses the opportunity to discuss any problems or concerns they have and any other issues affecting them. An unofficial survey was conducted, which polled local business owners’ attitudes about our local economy:
Partial Survey Results: Are sales better this year than last? “Yes”—66% Do you expect the number of your employees to increase? “Stay the Same”—47% What do you expect our local economy to do? “Increase”—84% How would you rate the quality of the workforce in our area? “Good”—60% How would you rate the overall quality of life in the Brazos Valley? “Good”—90%

Le g i s l a t i v e A f f a i r s Co m m i t t e e The Chamber is the only local organization that advocates for businesses at the local, state and federal levels. The Chamber uses guiding principles in considering positions on business issues. At the heart of these principles is the certainty that the strength of a nation, a state and a community is a reflection of the strength of their economies. Wealth and jobs are created through economic development in a free society by means of free enterprise. Businesses, especially small businesses, are the engines that drive economic growth and rely on an atmosphere conducive to that growth.
