ANNUAL REPORT
2015 2016 THE BRYAN/COLLEGE STATION CHAMBER OF COMMERCE EXISTS TO ENHANCE THE ECONOMIC WELL-BEING OF THE BUSINESSES IN THE COMMUNITIES IT SERVES.
From the Boardroom As I began my year as Chairman of the Board, I outlined a set of priorities that would guide the actions and focus for our Chamber for the year. They were: 1) World Class Business Climate – world class business climate requires a low tax and reasonable regulatory environment with effective government at all levels. 2) World Class Infrastructure – we must ensure that with our tax dollars we are investing in our roads, rail, runways, and fiber optic ring. 3) World Class Human Capital – the most important part of a world-class business is world-class people. If we expect businesses to come here and thrive here, then we must do everything we can to support world-class human capital development which includes the role of local schools, Texas A&M University, and Blinn College. Thank you to the many volunteers who signed on as Board members, committee chairs or committee members, or as Ambassadors for this year. Thanks also to the dedicated and very capable staff lead by Royce Hickman. As Royce brings his long, distinguished and exemplary service to the Chamber to an end, the Chamber and community owe him, Mary and his family a debt of gratitude. We wish him well in retirement. Working together we have been able to leverage our tremendous energy, vitality, innovation, and creativity as a catalyst for progress and growth. Together, you helped me to deliver on those priorities. We have enjoyed record attendance at many of our events and programs, increased membership and enhanced membership services, and achieved significant financial success. We advocated at the national, state and local levels to ensure business had every opportunity to succeed and grow. This past year, we continued to unite our efforts and kept the business climate strong and the quality of life of this community has been enhanced. Bryan/College Station continues to be a great place to work, live, and play. Overall, it has been a phenomenal year! From a personal standpoint it has been a high honor and privilege to lead this organization. I also want to thank the leadership at Texas A&M who agreed to my service. Additionally, I want to thank my family for their unconditional love and support. We have come this far by working together for a common good and a noble cause and with your continued commitment and engagement, I know we can go further.

Bryan/College Station Chamber of Commerce: 2015-2016 Annual Report
From the Boardroom We are blessed to live, work and play right here in the Brazos Valley and the Bryan/College Station Chamber has been hard at work over the past year to be the voice for business. Our goal is to enhance the economic well-being of businesses. Simply put, we’re here to serve businesses in the Brazos County and over the past 12 months we’ve been successful in countless ways. We continued to unite business, civic, education and government leaders through the Chamber’s programs and special events. Relationships were built and deepened through our monthly Business After Hours; Leadership was enhanced by our Leadership Brazos and Junior Leadership Brazos Programs while providing informational events like our annual Economic Outlook Conference, Community Briefings and various Educational Seminars/Workshops throughout the year. An integral part of our responsibility to the business community is serving as a strong voice to our local, county, state and nationally elected officials. This was accomplished by the efforts of our Legislative Affairs Committee, which takes input from businesses and turns those into Legislative Action Plans for sharing during our annual trips to Austin and Washington, D.C. Bottom line, we live in a great place and I believe it all starts with a strong business community. When businesses prosper, jobs are created. When jobs are created, our citizens do well economically and our tax base increases. When that occurs, our schools and children will benefit, crime decreases and the overall quality of life improves. It’s the job of our Board, staff, and volunteers to continue to help support and encourage a strong business environment. We all win when businesses do well. In closing, our Chamber is truly unique. I’m thankful for our dedicated staff, our strong and diverse Board of Directors and our group of highly engaged volunteers who are here to serve you. For these reasons and more, I’m excited and looking forward to leading the Chamber in the coming year. While we will have a new President and CEO, our mission will not change. You can continue to count on your Chamber to enhance the economic well-being of business as we work together to make this the best community to call home.

Bryan/College Station Chamber of Commerce: 2015-2016 Annual Report
A Word From Our President It is a pleasure to present the eighteenth consecutive Annual Report of the Bryan/College Station Chamber of Commerce. This past year was a good year for your Chamber of Commerce as it was filled with many accomplishments and much excitement. In this report you will be able to see that the year has been successful in terms of both our programs and our finances. Our local economy has continued to fare well overall and therefore many of our businesses have experienced increased sales. The Chamber continues to focus on providing opportunities for our members to both promote their businesses and to network. The year began with a successful and informative Annual Banquet where Dr. Eli Jones, Dean of the Mays Business School, advised attendees about activities at the business school and discussed the importance of the University and community working together. That was followed by two popular events that were very well attended: our Annual Ag Breakfast with over 450 attendees (largest ever) and our annual Economic Outlook Conference with 436 attendees. Other successful events that remain popular include our Taste of Aggieland: An Epicurean Extravaganza, our annual Job Fairs, and our Annual LobsterFest & Golf Classic. Our second ever Founder’s Night was held at One Circle Drive (the former A&M President’s home) on the Texas A&M Campus. The event attracted approximately 300 attendees and received outstanding comments with many wanting the event to return to One Circle Drive again next year. Our Community Softball Classic continued to focus on those who protect us each and every day, our first responders and for the fourth year in a row, part of the proceeds went to the 100 Club, an organization that supports the families of law enforcement officers. We also conducted several successful luncheons. Our membership luncheon held on July 7th featured an outstanding presentation by Mike Wright on Leadership and attracted 130 attendees. Our annual luncheon honoring our Historically Underutilized Businesses was held on July 26th and attracted approximately 200 attendees. Our Economic Outlook Briefing Luncheon on August 17 attracted over 280 attendees and featured presentations by Chad Bohne with TxDOT and David Hagy with Texas Central Railway. In addition, our “Lunch & Learn” education efforts continue to grow in popularity. We have a number of our members wanting to make presentations in the coming year. During the year we held 2 groundbreakings and 93 ribbon cuttings, which included 31 Deluxe Ribbon Cuttings, a new record for Deluxe Ribbon Cutting events. Our Economic Development agreement with Brazos County was renewed and for the third year in a row they sponsored our annual “Chamber Day” in March. The event attracted almost 200 volunteers who visited approximately over 950 businesses. For the sixth year in a row, a short survey was part of the visit which provided Brazos County and your Chamber with very valuable information. We found that 59% of the almost 800 businesses who participated in the survey experienced a sales growth over last year, 75% expected our local economy to improve and 45% expected their number of employees to increase. We remain committed to having a major focus on legislative affairs; national, state and local. Our trip to Washington D.C. in May was once again the highlight of the year for our Legislative Affairs committee. Thanks to the efforts of Congressman Bill Flores and his staff, our delegation had an opportunity to have 30- minute sessions with key members of the leadership in Washington. In addition to Congressman Bill Flores (Chairman of the Republican Study Committee), a few of the other elected officials (with their titles at the time of the meeting) that our delegation had an opportunity to visit with were: Senator John Cornyn (Senate Majority Whip), Congressman Paul Ryan of Wisconsin (Speaker of the House), Congressman Kevin McCarty of California (House Majority Leader), Congressman Steve Scalise of Louisiana (House Majority Whip), Congressman Kevin Brady of Texas (Chairman, Ways & Means), Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers (Chairwoman, House Republican Conference), Congressman Fred Upton of Michigan (Chairman, Energy & Commerce), Congressman Jeb Hensarling of Texas (Chairman, Financial Services) and Congressman John Carter and Congressman Henry Cuellar both of Texas and both on the Appropriations committee. It would be hard for anyone visiting Washington to top this day! In addition, members of our delegation visited the offices of all members of the House of Representatives from Texas and were able to visit with either the elected official or a member of their staff. Members of our Legislative Affairs Committee are already working hard on the upcoming trips to Austin in February and Washington D.C. scheduled for early May. We also continue to host our very popular Local Candidates Forums on a regular basis and it continues to be a source of great pride that a senior executive with the Texas Association of Business referred to our Chamber as one of the top three chambers in the State of Texas from a legislative standpoint. Financially, your Chamber finished the year with a bottom line that exceeded our budget for the sixteenth consecutive year and we continue to maintain a strong cash position. This success is the result of the efforts of so many. I want to thank the hundreds of volunteers who have, by their commitment, established this Chamber as one of the busiest and most outstanding Chambers in the State. I particularly appreciate the commitment and dedication of our Board of Directors, under the leadership of Board Chair Robert “Bobby” Bisor of Texas A&M University, our Ambassadors, under the leadership of Barbie Springer with Brenham National Bank, our Leadership Brazos Alumni Association under the leadership of Jason Cornelius of Prosperity Bank and our extremely dedicated and committed staff, who, in spite of being shorthanded at times this year, still accomplish so much. As most of you know, I will retire as the full-time President/CEO of the Chamber on December 31 of this year. It has been an incredible 19 years for me and I am so thankful that I have had a position that allowed me to look forward to getting up and going to work every day. I thank each of you for the support you have given me these past 19 years, particularly those who served as Board Chairs, on the Board of Directors, on Chamber committees, those I had the privilege of working with on the staff, and my family who sacrificed so much so that I could have this incredible experience. I will continue to be involved with the Chamber in a part time supportive role and Mary and I will continue to be supportive of this wonderful community that we love so much. The Chamber can look forward to another strong year of accomplishments under the leadership of our Board of Directors, chaired by David O’Neil of Wells Fargo Bank and new President/CEO Glen Brewer. If you are one of our many outstanding Chamber members, thank you for your commitment to our community and to your Chamber. If you are not a member, we invite you to call 260-5200 and join us today as we continue our efforts to provide an environment that gives every business in our community the best chance for SUCCESS!
