Something Old, Something Owners balance history and comfort with Bryan remodeling project

eople living in older homes sometimes find themselves having to choose between maintaining the houseâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s

historical elements and making it comfortable for modern living. This is especially true if a growing family necessitates a remodeling job, but the home of Jonathan and Ulrike Smith

proves that one truly can have both with a little planning. Smith, a professor and Assistant Department Head at Texas A&M’s Department of Geography, successfully converted the attic spaces of his 32nd Street Bryan home while preserving the integrity and historic charm of this nearly 80-year old house. The house was built in 1931 in one of Bryan’s early suburban communities, but Smith believes the bricks date back even farther. “We believe the bricks came from the old Villa Maria convent,” Smith said. “You can tell the bricks were part of another building before because there is mortar in places there shouldn’t be and the bricks are not all the same. The convent was demolished in 1928 or 1929, so that fits the timeline.” Smith said he also has found markings on some of the bricks, including one on the front of his house, which would seem to point to some sneaky visitors to the all-girls school. The brick has writing on it in what appears to be pencil. Not all of it is legible, but one bit of writing clearly says “The Allen Boys” in a looping cursive script, something Smith believes

was written by a male visitor from Allen Academy to the convent school. The house was built for Charles W. Simmons, an early member of the Texas Agricultural Extension who lived in the home until the late 70s. The house stood empty for a few years before Randall Haynes bought the home in 1980. Haynes updated the electrical system, plumbing and the heating/air conditioning system. He sold the home to Kevin and Abbie Krolczyk, who

enclosed the back porch and finished the front part of the attic. The Smiths bought the house in 1999 and began making their own additions to the house. As their family grew, so did their need for space. In the time since moving into the house, the couple had three children. To create space for them, an extensive overhaul of the attic was in order. The front portion of the attic had been previously finished, but was 6 Home in Style Spring 2011

remodeled into a bedroom and upstairs common area. The back end of the attic was also remodeled and finished to create two new bedrooms. “We had to raise the ceilings in the back part of the attic,” Smith said. “We had to be very careful so that we didn’t damage or ruin the rest of the house.” The remodel was successful and now Christian, 11, Oliver, 8, and Lillian Rose, 5, all have their own space with

a more modern feel than the historic downstairs portion of the house. Renovations have also been made downstairs, most notably in the kitchen. The house still has the original hardwood floors throughout the first floor, but the kitchen had a linoleum tile that the Smiths did not like. They pulled up the linoleum and found the subfloor to be in such good condition that they finished it instead of bringing in new hardwood flooring. A breakfast nook was also added to the kitchen. This was accomplished by turning the existing kitchen window into a bay window, giving the family a place to gather in the morning. Most importantly, this addition was done in a manner that makes it look like it has always been a part of the house. Smith and his wife have been creative in their decorating to keep the home’s historic feel. Items such as televisions and computers are all but

invisible in the home. The computer in the downstairs study is kept in an antique-styled cabinet that also serves as a desk while open. When shut, the cabinet blends in with the actual antique and period items in the room, including antique locks from Ulrike’s native Austria and old toll booth receipts from

Smith’s hometown. “I grew up in Brockport, New York, a village on the Erie Canal in western New York State,” Smith said. “The receipts are from the canal toll booth in Brockport. One is dated 1829, the other 1831. They list the cargo on the canal boat - oysters, apples, hay, lumber

- and the toll paid. I found them by chance in a junk store two hundred miles from Brockport.” The backyard is a great place to relax for children and adults alike. The kitchen-side patio area is decorated just as richly as the inside of the house and is a great place for outdoor dining or relaxing at the end of the day. The kids have their own play area built onto the side of the detached garage. The play area features a sand pit, playhouse, ladders, balance beams and even a seating area on the roof of the garage. “I used to enjoy climbing when I was a boy,” Smith said. “I wanted my kids to have that same fun, so there are lots of places to climb here.” Thanks to the Smiths’ priority on maintaining the historic appeal of their house, they were able to create a home that respects the past while creating a comfortable future for their children.

hen watercolorist Rose Marie J. Lindsay enrolled in her first oﬃcial art class in 1972, she had no idea that seven years later painting would save her sanity. Her world turned upside down on an August afternoon in 1979 when her sixteen and a half year old son, Stephen, was found in the bottom of the pool after being attacked by unknown assailants. Lindsay, newly divorced at the time and still in the midst of finding a way to provide financial security for herself, then also had to struggle with understanding the senseless violence that had caused her son’s death. “I felt lost,” said Lindsay. “You have to believe that he’s in a better place than we are, or you don’t survive losing a child. I started doing art because I was lost. I knew I had to do something. I had to decide what I was going to do with the rest of my life. I could either go back to nursing or paint.”

A 1952 graduate of Providence Hospital School of Nursing in Waco, it had been more than twenty years since Lindsay had practiced nursing, due to the demands of raising her six children. In the interim, the methodology of patient care had changed so drastically that nursing had lost its original appeal for her. Instead, Lindsay took up her brush and for four years painted daily for hours, sometimes well into the night. “I think I worked harder at my art because it was filling a void in my life,” she said. “There were days when I prayed, ‘God, just don’t let me lose my marbles.’ ”

Originally interested in oils, Lindsay was hooked on watercolor after taking a three day workshop with well-known artist Ronnie Wells, and has painted exclusively in that medium ever since. Her works now hang in numerous private and corporate collections throughout the United States and all over the world, from Norway to the Cayman Islands to Brazil, with subject matter ranging from portraits to Texas farmhouses to cathedrals to gardens. Lindsay’s series of Texas wildﬂower note cards have been sold at the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum

By 1990, friends and acquaintances were asking for classes, so Lindsay converted one of her back bedrooms into a studio/classroom. “I only had three or four students to begin with,” said Lindsay, “and then I had to get another table, and then another table.” The biannual art sale has had to be indefinitely postponed, but Lindsay still teaches classes every Tuesday. In past years, Lindsay averaged 150 paintings per year, but since 2008, this figure has dropped to around 50 due to retinal hemorrhaging behind both eyes. Lindsay attributes her artistic ability to her parents and her upbringing in Cameron, Texas. During WWII, her father took wood from the garage and made an Army tank, a jeep, and a truck for her brothers. When the local “nickel”

paint, my fingers get itchy. I feel like I’m missing something. I can sit down at six in the evening and think, ‘I’ll just paint a little’ and then I’ll look up at the clock and realize it’s after midnight. You live in another world when you’re there.” In 1982, at the suggestion of friends, Lindsay started selling her paintings at biannual art sales in her carport. “I started out hanging them on the wrought iron out there,” said Lindsay. “I had a lot of helpers, and because the carport wasn’t closed in, for two days in a row we’d put the paintings out, bring them in at night, and cart them all out again the next morning.” By 1988, after studying under David Halbach at the Cowboy Artists of America Museum in Kerrville, her painting “Hill Country Barn” was chosen from among 25 students’ paintings for the Cowboy Artist Workshop Participants Showcase. This same painting was later purchased by

store owner saw them, he ordered a gross of all three, and that was just the beginning. “Fort Hood would deliver dump trucks full of apple, orange, and banana crates in our side yard,” said Lindsay. “We’d sit there with a hammer and pull the nails out of those wooden boxes and straighten them and use them over. We had to paint the little tables and chairs. We all did everything, my mom, my little sisters, and brother. We learned to use what we had to survive.” That dedication to hard work, frugality, and making something from nothing has stood Lindsay in good stead on the long journey from that

hot August afternoon in 1979 to 2011. “I feel like God gave me the talent to paint,” she said, “and I need to give back

to him by doing it. Between my faith, my art, and the support of family and friends, I’ve made it through.”

Just Meant To Be College station family finds its dream home

ometimes if you want something, all you have to do is ask for it. That’s how Davis and Molly Watson got their Pebble Creek home. “We’d lived in Pebble Creek for eight years, and I have always loved this house,” Molly Watson said. “I would drive by it every day and I just loved it. One day the lady who lived here was outside weeding the yard, so I stopped to talk to her. I introduced myself, told her I loved the house and asked her to call me if they ever considered selling it.” It only took three days to get that call. The owners called off the sale that time, but called the Watsons again a few months later. This time they were ready to sell and the deal was done. Molly got to redecorating right away. Hardwood floors replaced the existing carpet in much of the house and all but one wall got a new coat of paint. The end result is what she believes to be the perfect home for her and her family. 14 Home in Style Spring 2011

The Mike Lane home features four bedrooms, four and a half bathrooms, a large playcourt in the backyard, detached three-car garage and a surprising amount of privacy given its location in one of the busier parts of Pebble Creek. The front doors open into the entryway and sitting room, the Watsons’ favorite room. The family, as well as visitors can enjoy the cozy fireplace from the sofa or antique chairs. The decoration is a mix of the couple’s interests. Much of the furniture came from Molly’s family or antique auctions that she attends, while one of Davis’ trophy bucks hangs on the wall next to the fireplace. “We are in here every morning,” Molly said. “This is where we read the paper, have coffee and do our family devotion. We also love fireplaces, so this fire is on each morning, summer or winter. It’s just a great place where we all can be together as a family.” The design of the house favors cozy

rooms to large common spaces. As such, the 4,200 square-feet seem much more intimate and warm. Only the kitchen and entryway look into more than one other room, which means each room can have it’s own decorative theme and unique feel. The formal dining room sits around the corner opposite the entryway from the sitting room. While the family sometimes eats in the smaller kitchen dining area, Molly said she makes sure to get everyone together in this room three or more times a week. “I tell my boys that one of them could grow up to be President of the United States, so they have to be comfortable being in a dining room,” Molly said. “We eat in there as much as possible when we’re not having to rush off to basketball practice or something like that.” A faux-stone archway leads into the spacious French-style kitchen. The faux-stone extends into the kitchen in one corner where a built-in rack creates the feeling of being in a wine cellar. The room also features a center island, large pantry, plenty of counter space and cleverly hidden appliances that help recreate the feel of a French country kitchen. A serving bar separates the kitchen from the family room, creating the most open common space in the house. The windows of the kitchen and family room face into the backyard where the boys spend most of their time playing, meaning Molly can easily keep an eye on them. The family room naturally divides into two areas. One part of the room has the television, bookshelves and sofa while the other can serve as a secondary dining area with a large fireplace that is crackling almost every night. The rest of the first floor is the master suite. A dogleg hallway helps separate this part of the house and provides extra peace and quiet, something that is always welcome in a home with three young children. The windows of the room open

into a quiet corner of the backyard away from the boys’ play area and shaded from neighbors by a large tree. “Sometimes privacy is a hard thing to find in a place like Pebble Creek, but we cannot see anyone else’s house from our backyard, which is really nice,” Molly said. “It’s great because we’re in a busy part of Pebble Creek, but it’s also so private. We get the best of both.” Furnishings are kept simple in the bedroom, highlighted by a desk from an orphanage destroyed in the Galveston hurricane of 1900. The desk sits next to the bed and across from a classical armoire. A small chair in a windowed corner offers a place to relax and enjoy the sights of the backyard. The simplicity of the bedroom stands in contrast to the grandness of the master bath. It is nearly as large as the bedroom and features a center-set bathtub in the middle of the room, a recessed shower stall and two vanities.

The bath is naturally lit by two large windows on either side of the tub that, thanks to the privacy of a high fence and plenty of trees, remain uncovered by blinds or curtains. “The original owners had heavy draperies over all the windows, and I took all of those down,” Molly said. “I even took them down in the bathroom because you’d have to be standing on top of the fence to see in because it’s so private here.” Upstairs is devoted to the three boys. All three bedrooms open into a large playroom that the boys use for everything from movies to video games to impromptu soccer games. The only furniture items in the common area are three beanbag chairs for the boys. This allows them to make space for whatever games or adventures they have in mind.

Visiting friends are never at a loss for entertainment with a closet stocked with board games, a puppet show stage and a full karaoke setup. The first upstairs room belongs to the middle son, Cross. The 6-year-old is the artist of the family and his room reflects that. He has a large desk used for homework and his paintings, some of which are displayed around the house. “Cross is very artistic,” Molly said. “He spends a lot of time at his desk drawing and painting. I really like to showcase our kids’ work and give them freedom to be creative.” Cross’ room has two twin beds, a large walk-in closet and a private bathroom with a large walk-in shower. Each boy having their own bathroom was a major draw for Molly and Davis, and something the boys enjoy.

Next to Cross is Raines’ room. The youngest of the three, Raines has the smallest room, but enjoys a wide view of the backyard play area. The room follows a rustic motif with heavy canvas drapes, twin iron beds embellished with horseshoes and an end table with longhorn-shaped handles. The far end of the upstairs common area bridges the main house to the suite above the detached garage that serves as 8-year-old John Davis’ room. This room is also used as a guest room because it is the only upstairs room with a queensized bed and is set off from the main part of the house. “This is a very special room,” Molly said. “There are a lot of angles with the ceiling that I like a lot. It is sophisticated enough for guests and extremely private.” the eagle www.tHeeAgle.Com 19

The original owners used this as a game room, but the Watsons see it as the kind of room their oldest son will be happy to grow into. For all of the fun things to do upstairs, the boys spend most of their time outside. They often favor a window in the family room to doors when going in and out, and have a full complement of play options in their playcourt area. 20 Home in Style Spring 2011

“The playcourt is a large, smooth cement area in the back,” Molly said. “It is the perfect playground for our three boys. They can ride bikes, play soccer, play hockey, play basketball and anything else they want back there. Friends are always coming over and we’ve got five or six boys running around back there at any time.” Molly said she fell in love with the house at first sight and has continued to do so every day since. From the street curb in front of the house to the back fence, this home has a special space for everyone in the family and has truly become the Watsons’ dream home. And just think, all they had to do was ask for it.

A little creativity turns a throw-away table into a sentimental gift

s springtime approaches, many will think of crisp flowers, a brisk walk in the sunshine, or maybe even the NCAA basketball tournament. My mind immediately jumps to bright color palettes and great painting weather. The backyard is a perfect workshop, and I am ready to try all of the design ideas that have been bouncing around in my head. After all, spring is the season of fresh starts and trying new things. My passion for beautifying blank spaces does not stop in my own home, but spreads across town to the rooms of many of my friends. One friend in particular has had me drooling over her home’s wood floors and natural light since the day she moved in. The antique bedroom furniture is simple and complimented by grey-blue walls and a cream duvet. Though the mellow

colors were great for daylong naps and that spa-getaway-feel, we both knew the room needed a pop of color to brighten things up. Now I could’ve made it easy… throw a pillow on the bed and call it a day. Maybe even a nice lampshade. But where’s the fun in that? Like I said, it’s spring and my eagerness to craft was at an all time high. My latest task had been organizing pictures that piled up over the holidays. The walls and frames were full, so I had to come up with a new way of displaying my memories. If found a way to take car of both the pictures and the decorating project when my mom was ready to throw out an unfinished wood side table. A present and a pop of color all in one. Always take advantage of situations like this. There’s nothing better than a seemingly worthless piece of furniture to

thin coat of paint 4. Let dry for 2 hours at least 5. Paint second coat and let dry overnight

one person that has endless possibilities for you. And when it’s free, there is no harm in being bold and trying something out of the ordinary. After much deliberation, I decided on a cranberry red paint to coat the side table. The color would stand out against the grey-blue walls, but still tie in with the neutral cream. Knowing my friend’s birthday was right around the corner, I kept the table tucked away in my garage until the big reveal. To create a distressed look, use 100 grit sandpaper to rough up edges that would normally see wear over time (i.e. corners, edges). Even flat, smooth surfaces look great with a little roughing up. Don’t be afraid to really get into the wood and scratch up the paint. It might be hard at first to mess up all the hard work that was just put into making the paint job perfect, but watching those little paint chips fall to the floor does get easier…trust me. However this is such thing as too much distressing. We don’t want to lose our color all together and end up with a ratty-looking piece of tree bark. So take it slow. Go one time around the furniture piece with the sandpaper, then take a step back and evaluate before going back in for any touch ups. But do remember, the beauty of a distressed look is that it can’t be perfect. The table was ready to be transformed, Round Two. I gathered the black and white pictures I had chosen for the display and played around with different arrangements on the top of the table. My trusty friend,

double stick tape, allows the pictures to be changed out and moved as often as desired. I chose to space them out and let the color show through, but a collage of pictures would also work well, especially on a smaller space. Now the finishing touch makes any side table or desk a functional and professional work of art. I located a glass company that offered custom glass pieces and created a template from the top of the table. This proved a little challenging with the rounded edges, but if the template is close enough the company can usually make up the difference. The glass came out to be about $25 and pulled the whole table together. I made a big to-do for my friendâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s birthday and set up the table with flowers, a lamp, and a couple candles that tied in all the colors of the room. Sure enough, tears were shed, and she loved the innovative way to display pictures of all our college memories (the

free furniture wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t a bad deal either). For less than $30, I had fulfilled my need to craft and my friend had a whole new look for her room. The steps are simple enough for anyone to tackle and the price is hard to beat. Upcycling has endless possibilities. Take a look at the local junk and a treasure is sure to surface.

A couple of coats of paint, a sheet of glass and a few pictures later, this table became a treasured gift for a friend.

Hollywood’s hottest new design duo shares inspired ideas, avoidable mistakes and easy solutions for any nursery iffani Thiessen has come a long way from her days as Kelly Kapowski on the teen hit “Saved By The Bell.” The bankable actress, who currently stars in the USA Network series “White Collar,” has tapped into yet another creative vein this past year. In early 2010, Thiessen teamed up with friend and interior designer Lonni Paul to launch PetitNest, their modern classic answer to expected, staid nursery design. “A nursery should be an extension of your own taste,” says Thiessen, who gave birth to daughter Harper this past June. “We wanted to create furniture you can use throughout the home. A home should actually flow from room to room.” A nursery should fit into its home’s overall design scheme; it shouldn’t be so jarringly different that it seems like it belongs in another house, Thiessen says. The Los Angeles company’s collections include cribs, dressers, gliders, chairs, wall art and bedding, and Thiessen and Paul already are “working on designing the next phase, says Paul, a mother of three best known for her success on HGTV’s “Design Star.” “All of PetitNest’s cribs have been designed with the ability to be “converted” into toddler beds, she says. hat goes around comes around: TV shows and movies that hopped over to the Internet are finally coming back home to the TV with all sorts of goodies, and it’s about time. This year saw the emergence of four major media streaming competitors – Apple TV ($99), Roku XDS ($99), Boxee Box ($199) and the Google TVpowered Logitech Revue ($299) – that each boast a different mix of popular free and premium services like Netflix, Pandora, YouTube and Hulu. “In home theater, compared to other electronic devices like phones and computers, change is a very slow process,” says Richard Lawler, the associate editor for tech site Engadget HD. “The combination of content and hardware that can access it takes time to sync up and it’s only within the last 12 months that consumer demand, cost to manufacture and, most importantly, content availability have aligned to a degree that makes it all worthwhile.” It might take a while for consumers to actually become aware of these new services, but Netflix has become so ubiquitous that it accounts for more than 20 percent of Internet traffic during peak times, according to a report from networking equipment company Sandvine. Similarly, a Comcast survey found that already two-thirds of its customers had “time-shifted” prime-time 26 Home in Style Spring 2011

The refreshed movie and TV show rental service is a natural extension for users of other Apple products like the iPhone and iPad, which work seamlessly with the service. What many people may have a difficult time with, though, is finding free content from the major networks. ABC, NBC and CBS all blocked Google TV devices from streaming full episodes of their shows through Hulu. In fact, only a handful of devices, like Playstation 3 and Roku, currently support Hulu, but these all require a subscription to the premium version of the streaming service. That said, there is still a wealth of different channels available among these devices. The Roku XDS especially, which Moskovciak calls “the best cord-cutter,” offers a huge variety of content with additional services like Amazon Video

on Demand, MLB.tv, Pandora Internet radio and other niche channels. The Boxee Box offers a similarly diverse range of content, along with Facebook and Twitter integration. Google TV is essentially a fullfeatured Web browser, so it offers access to almost any streaming video that would be regularly accessible from a computer. Choosing a service can be difficult. “The key thing to do is to focus on your specific needs and get a device that performs tasks you know you will want,” Lawler says. “That said, if you’re not willing to face the possibility of upgrading again in 12 months for another gotta-have-it feature, you may want to wait.” Theoretically, even expensive TVs with built-in streaming capabilities
