cheesecakes or an assortment of French pastries. Keep in mind that if you opt for food stations, the caterer may charge you for plate rental. The traditional seated dinner service doesn’t have to consist of chicken or prime rib. Most caterers have a few special dishes in their repertoire that can be individually served without seeming like they were produced on an assembly line. Ask for suggestions from the caterer on what courses they would recommend. Be careful about going overboard with appetizers. You don’t want your guests to be so stuffed that they have no appetite for the main course. If you are having a small gathering and want to keep it within an affordable budget, it is perfectly fine to offer your guests cocktails and hors d’oeuvres rather than a full meal. This usually includes small stations with finger foods, dips and vegetables, as well as waiters passing around trays of food. If your event will be held in a home, garden, or backyard, the caterer will have to make special arrangements to make sure foods are kept cool or hot and covered from insects. Make sure the caterer knows well in advance if the event will be outdoors and what time of day it will be. Always have an alternative in mind in case of inclement weather. Some caterers only provide food, while Buppy’s Catering can handle every detail from the china, linen, tables, chairs and food preparation to the wait staff and servers. They have taken care of a wide range of events over the years, from small intimate gatherings to large elaborate functions, including weddings, family get-togethers, and corporate meetings. So the next time you are faced with planning a major event, seek the help of Buppy’s experienced catering consultants and you will be amazed at how much they can help make your event a big success. No matter how elaborate or simple the occasion, Buppy guarantees the planning of your event will be worry-free.

S u n day, Ma r c H 25, 2012

Selecting a caterer for your special event is probably the most important choice you will have to make, after deciding the where and when. When you meet with the caterers for an estimate, you should be prepared to tell them how many guests you will be serving, type of food and presentation you have in mind. Be receptive to creative and money-saving ideas the caterer may suggest. Interview a few different caterers, look over their menus, and sample some of their specialties. For instance, Buppy’s Catering offers tastings so that the food options can be sampled and decided on in advance. Popular caterers need to be reserved several months in advance. Most require a deposit to reserve the time and date. Remember that services offered and fees can vary widely. Ask how long has the caterer been in business, and for their references. Buppy’s Catering has been in business more than 19 years and has repeatedly been voted the Favorite Caterer in The Eagle’s Readers’ Choice contest. They were selected again in 2011 for Best of Weddings by the knot. Ask the caterer for a breakdown per menu item based on the number of guests you expect. Remember to ask if condiments, garnishes, salad dressings, etc. are included in the estimate. Find out if the caterer specializes in certain types of food. For example, one caterer might specialize in prime rib, roast beef or turkey with appropriate side dishes, while another might offer an international array of foods including Asian, Italian, Mexican, etc. Instead of formal dinners with several courses, you may opt to offer buffet-style food stations. One advantage of food stations is that it allows you to reduce the number of waiters needed to service each table. Stations also allow you to be a little more creative with food choices. If the event will be a brunch, stations might include an omelet bar, crepes, or stir-fry options. You may choose to offer a dessert station that includes ice cream and sundae toppings,

How To Quick Tips

Glen A. Davis, Regional President Commerce National Bank

1.

Is your bank a Community Bank? Community banks make decisions locally. Large publically traded banks are not as flexible, even on the small-but importantthings like flexible payment and terms.

2.

Develop a relationship with your banker. Have a relationship with your bank and banker who can understand your situation and needs.

T H e e aG l e • T H e e aG l e.co M

3.

Does your bank offer a full array of products and services? Local community banks are more likely to customize products and services to better meet your individual needs.

4.

Does your bank have the latest in online banking technology? Make sure your bank offers the latest and user friendly online banking featuring electronic bill pay as well as mobile banking for on-the-go users.

How to Select a Bank Choosing the right bank that fits your needs is much easier today because there are many more options available to consumers. The first thing you may want to consider is the type of banking business that fits your needs. Most people place an emphasis on customer services and like the idea of personally knowing the personnel at the bank. A lot of times, people prefer banks for their friendliness. Building a one-on-one relationship with your banker reinforces your trust and confidence in your bank. “Knowing your banker is beneficial. Your banker knowing you is very important. That’s how you build a relationship” said Glen A. Davis, Regional President for Commerce National Bank. Look for a bank that is close geographically to where you live or work and offers the same or similar services as other banks in town. Or you may want to gauge your choice on the bank’s accessibility. If you are on the road every day, for example, and a bank is located in a convenient spot along your regular travel routine, that might be the best one for you. Most banks have similar services these days, but there are some differences. A good way to check the services a bank offers is to look up its Web site. That will supply you with information about the types of checking and savings accounts that are offered, interest rates on loans, what special services might be available, etc. Know ahead of time what kinds of things you are looking for in terms of service, products and perks. Does the bank you have in

University Drive Location mind offer online banking and/or ATM service? Does it offer good checking account products? Does it offer direct deposit? Are the bank’s interest rates competitive? Answers to these and other pertinent questions can usually be found online. If you have narrowed your choice down to two or three banks in terms of convenience and the type of banking business you do, then visiting the Web sites of the banks could help you make your final decision. After you have researched banks online in terms of convenience and service, take the time to make a personal visit. Talk to the bankers and loan officer. Are they someone you can speak openly with about your finances? Are they decision makers? Do you think you would feel comfortable coming to the bank officer and sitting down with a loan officer? Different banks sometimes have different hours when the lobby is open to customers.

Which bank officer hours work best with your work schedule? If you have just moved to a new location, you may want to ask neighbors which bank they would recommend. Use that to narrow your choices, and then do your own research based upon the factors listed above. Something else that is important in terms of choosing a bank is Davis to know yourself. What is your purpose in opening an account? Do you have a plan to build a savings account or do you just want an account so that you have a place to have your paycheck deposited or where you can get your paycheck cashed? Is earning interest important to you? Answering these questions honestly can help you not just

in choosing a bank, but in gauging your own personality in terms of finances. A good bank and banker can be very beneficial to you in helping with your finances, whether it is savings, loans or retirement. “A good banker is a strong financial resource for you,” said Glen A. Davis. If you’re serious about savings, then you will want a bank that offers the best opportunities to its customers for keeping money deposited there. But beware. Before you make any arrangements, be aware of what the penalties are for early withdrawals. If you know you might have difficulty leaving the money untouched, then you may want to consider a contract where the penalties are less severe even though the interest is not as high. Your banker can help you with these decisions, but in the long run, it is best to know yourself and make decisions accordingly.

MEET DAVID Inspired by museums, art, European fashion, Julia and his customers, David thrives on designing one-of-a-kind pieces for his discerning customers in search of that unique piece or gift. “Celebrations and life milestones are marked with jewelry and I feel honored to be a part of someone’s journey in such a personal way.”

looking for, then you may discover that true custom jewelry is not necessary. Keep a budget in mind and discuss it with your jeweler. Know that bargain shopping and custom jewelry don’t usually go hand in hand so be prepared to invest in a quality piece. Since custom jewelry pieces often becomes a family heirloom it’s important to end up with a piece that will last for future generations to enjoy.

Find a jeweler who meets your custom jewelry needs

Don’t move forward until you are completely happy with the design

It’s a lot easier to change a piece while it is still in the planning phase than after it has been cast. A good jeweler will allow the client to be involved throughout the design process. There should be the opportunity for followup meetings after the initial meeting to discuss designs, and there should be plenty of opportunities to alter the design before production starts. “There should be a number of sketches or designs for the client to choose from,” Gardner said. “Those sketches can reflect different styles or minor variations on a style already chosen. The client should have plenty of options to start with.”

Use the right hardware

Choosing the metal and stone for your custom piece is every bit as important as

the design. Consult with the jeweler and use his or her expertise to make the right choice. Avoid fad materials that will date the piece for timeless jewelry. It is also important to consider how much wear and tear the piece might experience. Some materials are better suited for occasional wearing, while others stand up better to daily use.

The big moment

All of the hard work and planning pays off when you first get to see your custom piece of jewelry. A truly involved jeweler revels in this moment as much as his or her clients. “Delivering a custom piece of jewelry is very gratifying for a jeweler,” Gardner said. “Our entire store comes alive when it’s time for a customer to pick up their jewelry. All of the employees want to see the piece or even try it on, and we’re all very pleased when we see the joy that our work brings to our customers.”

The first phase of designing a piece of custom jewelry is the initial sketch. This is where the jeweler first configures the elements the customer is looking for.

1.

Look at other pieces of jewelry to see what elements you like and might want in your piece.

2.

Get to know your jeweler. The more he or she learns about your style, the better the finished piece will be.

3.

Don’t move forward until you are happy with the design. Make sure the piece you get is exactly what you want.

4.

Make sure your jeweler gets your final approval before casting the piece.

5.

Consult with your jeweler on the metal and stone used. Their expertise is very useful.

How to Choose a Toy a Child Will Enjoy

BY

T H e e aG l e • T H e e aG l e.co M

S u n day, Ma r c H 25, 2012

brought to you by:

Choosing a toy for a child can be difficult, especially at certain ages. Toddlers and children closer to 10 years-old pose problems, but bearing certain things in mind can make buying a toy for a child of any age much easier. Here are some tips to make choosing a toy easier:

1. A toy should be openended.

The best toys engage a child’s imagination. Finding toys that have multiple uses and can be used with other toys can help children enjoy them more. “Blocks are a great openended toy,” said Jacque Flagg of Jacque’s toy store in Bryan. “You can do anything with blocks. You can build roads or buildings and use other toys with them. There are all kinds of possibilities.”

2. The child should decide how a toy is played with.

While most children will find a way to play with almost any toy, consider toys that let the child dictate how they are used. Some toys that are tied to television or movie series are great if the child is a fan of those programs, but won’t be very appealing if they are not. It’s also important not to discourage children for playing with a toy in a way that doesn’t seem like the intended us for an adult. So long as the play is safe, allow the child to use their imagination and critical thinking skills to find a variety of uses for their toys.

the PlasmaCar It’s Pure Energy ★ Pure Fun!

3. Make sure the toy is age appropriate.

Giving a child a toy intended for older children can end up frustrating them, and can potentially be unsafe. Pay attention to age recommendations on the packaging to make sure you are buying an appropriate toy. It is also important to know the child you are shopping for. Even when following packaging recommendations, buying age-appropriate toys can be tricky. “Things can get tough right around two years-old,” Flagg said. “There’s stuff made for kids in that age range that may be geared more for 18 months and down and others that are made for three and up. It can be very tough to find something geared for a two year-old that they can actually grow with. Toys like peg puzzles and vehicle toys work really well for that age group.”

4. Look for a toy that kids can grow with.

While some age groups are tough to shop for, others have versatile toys that can grow with them. Flagg points out various types of games as toys that fit this bill. “You can find math games that start out with simple addition and go all the way up to multiplication and division,” Flagg said. “Some construction type toys and building blocks are also good. A lot of them are listed as three and up, but if the child is creative, they will play with them for a long time”

Don Plitt, Environmental Health Services Director How to properly host a temporary event

S u n day, Ma r c H 25, 2012

You do not need a temporary food permit if:

• You are selling packaged food or canned/bottled drinks (sodas from a coke trailer are also OK). Packaged foods such as sandwiches, which require refrigeration, DO need a permit. • You are serving tea, coffee, popcorn, cotton candy or snow cones. • The food you are serving is from a permitted source such as a restaurant or supermarket. The permitted source should set up for temporary service and insure temperatures are correct and sustained. • Your event has a guest list or a finite number of attendees and the public is not invited nor is the event advertised (example: wedding reception).

LET US SHOW YOU HOW TO PLAN A SAFE TEMPORARY EVENT T H e e aG l e • T H e e aG l e.co M

• Contact the Brazos County Health Department to fill out an application and pay the temporary event permit fee of $60 per vendor. • View the video in the department on how to set up a temporary event. • At a temporary event, all food must be prepared on site, no food can be made or come from home and the event may not operate more than 72 hours. Items that cannot be made on site must be purchased from a permitted facility (i.e. potato salad from a supermarket) and receipts should be made available. • If the temporary event is not set up correctly or the inspector finds a violation, he/she has the authority to shut the temporary event down and/or issue an administrative fee of $60.00. • Things you must have when setting up a temporary event: -a hand sink (water cooler with spigot) with catch bucket -a three basin sink or dish pans to wash utensils and must be labeled: 1. Wash 2. Rinse 3. Sanitize (use Clorox at one capful per gallon of water) -all personnel prepping food must wear a hair restraint and wear gloves -the three basin sink must have hot water -all cold foods must be

kept in ice and must hold a maximum temperature of 41 degrees Fahrenheit -all hot foods must be held at 135 degrees Fahrenheit -if restrooms are not in close proximity then Port-aPotties must be brought in • All hygiene items must be set up first. -keep all personal items such as food, drink, clothing, cell phones) away from food prep/storage areas -all food and service ware must be kept off the ground

How to Protest Property Taxes brought to you by:

S u n day, Ma r c H 25, 2012

Brian Stephen, MAI

979-485-8537 Property taxes are one of the largest line item expenses incurred by property owners. When attempting to cut excess property taxes, even sophisticated property owners may not know all their rights. For instance, the current Texas Property Tax Code allows property owners to seek an equity adjustment based on comparable properties that are appropriately adjusted. Americans across the country are seeing real estate values drop, both on the commercial and residential side, yet their real estate taxes are staying the same or continue to go up. More and more owners are actively pursuing a property tax protest. Experts estimate that between 60-70 percent of ALL property owners are over assessed, while only 2 percent actually bother to do anything about it. Many don’t know that they can appeal. The language and the way that property taxes are calculated are overly complicated. Many

industry experts argue that cities do this on purpose to confuse or bore people into not appealing. In reality, the process is not that difficult to understand and the time needed to investigate and learn how to appeal can be as little as an afternoon. The potential savings can be significant, making it well worth it for the owner to appeal. The savings go on and on, year after year, so an annual savings could translate into a large amount over a ten-year period. In addition, many owners can qualify for a rebate on taxes that they have over-paid in previous years. Get out there and protest your property taxes! As tax payers face corporate downsizing, weak healthcare programs, a stalling economy and the biggest credit crisis since the great depression we need to address this problem and only pay the tax actually due. The deadline to file a protest is 30 days after notice of your assessed value is mailed to you. Protest annually to minimize your property taxes and seek advice from a local licensed property tax consultant – consultants are required to be licensed in the state of Texas – to maximize your savings. Consider the following tips when protesting your property taxes: • Hire a local Licensed Property Tax Consultant. • Make sure your Licensed Property Tax Consultant is experienced in the appraisal field and has good references. • Don’t miss your deadline to protest.

Tax Savings Is Like Money

In Your Hands!

It’s even more important now than ever for all property owners to cut back and budget for the year. Let us work for you to lower your Real Estate Taxes. We can protest your 2012 property taxes to put money back in your hands where it belongs!

Even healthy businesses run the risk of owing more than they can pay in a month. If you will spend 45 minutes each month on a cash flow projection, it will help you identify potential shortfalls. Start by identifying cash flow assumptions in two areas: 1. Receivables: Outline how quickly you receive payment from your customers (i.e., if most of your customers pay you within 30 days, an assumption could be: 90 percent of sales will be collected the month after the sale). 2. Payables: Outline when your payments are due (i.e., if your vendors require payment within two weeks of delivery, an assumption could be: payables are due within 14 days of purchase). TIP: Don’t let optimism influence your assumptions. Only the most likely numbers should appear on your spreadsheet. With these assumptions, begin drafting your cash flow projection. Creating a cash flow projection

Business Platinum Credit Card

S u n day, Ma r c H 25, 2012

A question we often hear from business owners is, “What can I do to be more successful this year?” My answer: Understand your cash flow. Cash flow basically means, “Given the cash I have now, and the cash I expect to come in, will I have enough cash in my bank account to pay my expenses as they come due?” Sounds simple, but if a business owner overestimates income and underestimates expenses, he or she may not see a shortage coming and could run out of money. So to help you prepare for success in 2012, here are some ideas for managing your cash flow effectively:

spreadsheet, representing the next 12 months. On the lefthand side, list the following categories: • Operating cash, beginning — The amount of money you’ll have at the beginning of each month. • Sources of cash — All money coming in each month (i.e., receivables, direct sales, loans, etc.). • Total sources of cash — Add the amounts in the Operating cash, beginning row to the amounts in the Sources of cash for each month. • Uses of cash — List every likely expense your business may incur, such as payroll, accounts payable, rent and loan payments. • Total uses of cash — Tally all your expenses so you can see what will be going out the door each month. • Excess (deficit) of cash — This is the number that counts. If you see positive numbers across the board, you may have extra dollars to invest. If you see a negative number for one of the months — don’t panic — you have time and options to prepare your business. As the months pass, compare your monthly cash flow statements to your projections for each month. If the numbers don’t match up, revisit your key assumptions. Don’t worry about small differences – typically less than 5 percent. TIP: In the Total uses for cash section, set aside 10 percent of revenues to be used for “other expenses” so you’ll have some cushion for unforeseen costs. Track your projections by creating a rolling 12-month plan that you update at the end of each month. By adding a new month to the end every time a month is completed, you’ll always have a year-ahead grasp of your business’s financial health. However, don’t try to project more than 12 months into the future as there are just too many variables. Once you’ve gotten into the habit of using a cash flow projection, it should give you a clearer picture of your company’s ongoing financial health. And it’s a great tool for meeting with your banker.

How to Choose a Podiatrist What is a podiatrist?

A podiatrist, DPM, doctor of podiatric medicine, is the only health care professional whose total training focuses on the foot and related body systems. As a specialist in foot care, the podiatrist receives extensive training in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of foot disorders by medical and surgical means. After obtaining an undergraduate degree, the podiatric doctor spends four years in a College of Podiatric Medicine to obtain a doctorate degree. Many podiatrists further their education by participating in a postgraduate residency program at an approved hospital or university. Following their doctorate degree, each podiatrist must pass national and state examinations in order to be licensed by the state in which he or she will practice. Watering: 90% of all foundation failure is caused by too much or the lack of water. To know how much water is enough, ask an expert.

2.

Drainage: The proper slope of soil away from the foundation is roughly 2 inches of drop for every 6 ft.

3.

Drainage systems: Never install a system without obtaining a soils report and/or checking with a professional that studies your concern and gives you an understandable and reasonable plan of action (proper drainage work is expensive if done right; avoid the cheap plan, it seldom works).

4.

Knowledge is everything: Ask questions until you are completely satisfied that you understand what is to be expected upon the completion of work.

5.

Trees: The proper distance from a structure is determined by the following equation: d/ h= 2> (d= distance from structure, h= height of tree upon maturing) should d/h= <2 upon the tree maturing, foundation failure will occur.

How to Tell When Foundation Repair is Needed The foundation of a home impacts almost every other structural and architectural element. If movement associated with settling or upheaval compromises the foundation, the damage will trickle up through the rest of the structure. In order to avoid long-term problems, it is essential to take care of any foundation repairs immediately and keep the foundation in good shape with preemptive steps and maintenance. Doing so will save time and money in the long term and help keep your home in prime condition. When repairing a foundation, there are more than 1,600 patented foundation repair methods. When choosing the proper method for homes in the Brazos Valley, one needs to select a method designed specifically for the soil upon which the structure is placed. Most of us probably take foundations for granted. When something is amiss, we may not know the warning signs. As a homeowner, it’s essential to become well informed on this matter so that you can keep an eye out for symptoms of foundation problems. Do you think you need foundation repair for your home? Symptoms of a bad foundation can be found on the interior and exterior of your home. One exterior sign is cracks in bricks or mortar, or brick separation around windows and doors. Walk around your home and look for bricks that

have separated and large cracks in the mortar. If you find them, chances are you need some work. Check for curvature of the brick line. This can be easily checked by looking along the sides of your home to see if the bricklines are straight, not curved. Another exterior sign is large gaps in exterior doors. Look at your garage door. Is it sitting as level as it used to? Also check the front and back door to see if they are square and they open and close smoothly. If they do not, you might have some issues. One interior symptom that is pretty obvious is cracks in drywall. Look at your

ceiling and walls and note any cracks. Small cracks may be from minor settling, but large ones may be a bigger problem. Next look at your floors. Are they no longer level? Also look at your cabinets and fireplace to see if they no longer sit flush. This indicates some kind of shifting with the walls. Lastly examine your interior doors. Do they no longer close or open properly? If so you might need foundation work. Any of these symptoms may be a sign that your foundation is degenerating. If you see any of these warning signs, don’t panic. Remember that these are just symptoms of foundation problems. Your problems may not require attention but a professional should examine them. If you do need foundation repair, don’t delay

fixing it. It will only get worse with time and more expensive to repair. If you think you might have problems call a professional today. The reality is, a building foundation will likely need repair at some point because changes in soil conditions, hydrostatic pressure and a variety of other outside forces can create stress on a foundation. Luckily, there are experts who specialize in just this type of work. The expert should provide you with a detailed elevation survey with a topographical contour drawing, detailing differential foundation movement and a solution that is simple for you to understand. Foundation contractors are not licensed by the state and are typically self-trained or self-educated. It is imperative to research any contractor you are considering. The one you choose should be professional and qualified to do the best job possible. That contractor will be able to determine the cause of the problem and will have the tools and knowledge to find a solution for your problem. Foundation inspection and repair is a science of its own. Know your contractor.

The Pro-Max™ piling system is a highly superior method of repairing reinforced concrete slab on grade or reinforced concrete beam foundations placed upon expansive clay soils (typically found in the Bryan/College Station area), utilizing a lead pilot piling designed to insert deeper than the typical concrete piling. When the pilot is driven it displaces the lateral pressurized soils due to pressurization of compacting soils during the driving process. This release enables deeper penetration of the piling column & plausible permanent lock. The final result is a piling system which by design will reach a load bearing strata (soil capable of supporting 9K, PSI) that typically is not affected by seasonal weather conditions or transpiration caused by trees.

How to Care for Diabetic Feet brought to you by:

T H e e aG l e • T H e e aG l e.co M

S u n day, Ma r c H 25, 2012

Tyler Kearney, DPM

According to the American Diabetes Association, about 15.7 million people (5.9 percent of the United States population) have diabetes. Nervous system damage (also called neuropathy) affects about 60 to 70 percent of people with diabetes and is a major complication that may cause diabetics to lose feeling in their feet or hands. Foot problems are a big risk in diabetics. Diabetics must constantly monitor their feet or face severe consequences, including amputation. With a diabetic foot, a wound as small as a blister from wearing a shoe that’s too tight can cause a lot of damage. Diabetes decreases blood flow, so injuries are slow to heal. When your wound is not healing, it’s at risk for infection. As a diabetic, your infections spread quickly. If you have diabetes, you should inspect your feet every day. Look for puncture wounds, bruises, pressure areas, redness, warmth, blisters, ulcers, scratches, cuts and nail problems. Get someone to help you, or use a mirror.

Here’s some basic advice for taking care of your feet: • Always keep your feet warm. • Don’t get your feet wet in snow or rain. • Don’t put your feet on radiators or in front of the fireplace. • Don’t smoke or sit crosslegged. Both decrease blood supply to your feet. • Don’t soak your feet. • Don’t use antiseptic solutions, drugstore medications, heating pads or sharp instruments on your feet. • Trim your toenails straight across. Avoid cutting the corners. Use a nail file or emery board. If you find an ingrown toenail, contact your podiatrist. • Use quality lotion to keep the skin of your feet soft and moist, but don’t put any lotion between your toes. • Wash your feet every day with mild soap and warm water. • Wear loose socks to bed. • Wear warm socks and shoes in winter. • When drying your feet, pat each foot with a towel and be careful between your toes. • Buy shoes that are comfortable without a “breaking in” period. Avoid pointed-toe styles and high heels. Try to get shoes made with leather upper material and deep toe boxes. Wear new shoes for only two hours or less at a time. Don’t wear the same pair every day. • Choose socks and stockings carefully. Wear clean, dry socks every day.
