Local schools Rudder, Bryan and A&M Consolidated are joined by traditional Class 4A power Brenham with four selections apiece to lead The Eagle’s Preseason All-Brazos Valley Football Team, but there is room for top talent from several small schools. The team was selected by members of The Eagle sports staff based upon previous production and potential. Our honor team is loaded with outstanding defensive linemen, but there is plenty of offensive talent. The list includes the passing combination that helped Lexington reach the Class 2A Division II state championship game,
quarterback Kogan Garrett and receiver Josh Murray. There was no position with as many deserving candidates as GARRETT defensive line. All four selections already have committed to FBS schools — Consol’s J.J. Bynum to Texas Tech, Brenham’s Malcom MURRA MURRAY Brown to Texas, Rudder’s David Wilganowski

Bryan hopes speedy offense will produce By DAVID CAMPBELL david.campbell@theeagle.com The Bryan Vikings will continue to run. They just might run a little faster. “The quarterbacks have changed our style,” Bryan Inside coach Bob Bellard said. Tim Hines big Ti “The running part of Bryan’ par ry s ryan’ backs are offensive line more speed /19 threats. The guys we’ve had in the past were straight downhill runners, but we weren’t going to win any track meets.” “We can go to a track meet with the three or four guys we’ve got running in the backfield right now. We’re faster and we’ve got guys with good moves and shake.” Kevin Jefferson will take over as Bryan’s feature back this season. Jeffe ef rson burst on effe the scene as a sophomore with his kick-returning ability, but was limited last year when he suffered a broken leg before the first game. “He’s kind of like a racehorse,” said Bellard, who thinks Jefferson didn’t fully recover until very late last season. “If he’s limping a little bit, he’s not nearly as effective. He still managed to make big plays when he did come back. If we can get him more touches this year, I think he’ll have a bigger impact on the football game.” Jefferson is shifty and has that sprinter’s speed. He will be the deep back in Bryans new “pistol” formation out of
the shotgun set. “If we’re under center and he’s back there, we call it rifle,” Bryan coach Bob Bellard said. “I’m not a big fan of the NRA or anything.” Marvin Dowdy keeps the fullback spot quickness, but he is small at 5-4, 150. Sophomore Bobby Johnson can move around the backfield. Bryan has physical senior receivers with Tim Willett and tight end Mike Miner, who can block on the corners as well as in the Vikings’ short passing game. But who will throw the passes? Chris Johnson and Zach Alvarado were forced into playing time during district

to Rice and Consol’s Christian LaCouture to Texas A&M. Bynum and Brown were first-team BV selections at the end of last season and Wilganowski made the second team. LaCouture is a transfer from Odessa Permian. There was MALCOM such an abunBROWN dance of defensive linemen that there wasn’t room for Cameron’s Edgar Luna, who was an All-Brazos Valley pick last year as a sophomore. LACOUTURE The offensive line also includes a major-college prospect in Bryan’s Tim Hines, who has pledged to Oklahoma State. LUNA If the preseason picks are a good indicator, Rudder could have a strong defense. The Rangers have three defensive picks, with linebacker Kody Burton and defen ef sive efen back Brendan Steptoe joining Wilganowski. Rudder’s BURTON other selection is senior punter Austin Baron. Bryan’s contingent includes defensive back Johnny Childs, tight end Michael CHILDS Miner, kick returner Chris Johnson and Hines. Consol’s defensive tackles are joined on the preseason honor team by JOHNSON
running back Quinton White, who has committed to Tulsa, and offensive lineman Cameron Cermin. WHITE Brazos Christian’s Brad Brown returns at place-kicker, having made the All-BV team last season after hitting eight field goals, including a 49- BRAD BROWN yarder. Several offensive players put up huge numbers last season. Garrett passed for 2,428 yards and 31 touchdowns, with Murray making 51 receptions for 995 yards and 13 touchdowns as Lexington reached the state final. Cameron wide receiver Decrick Westbrook is coming off a sensational junior season of that ensured his place on the honor team. Westbrook caught 75 passes for 1,075 yards with 16 touchdowns. The running backs combined to rush for more than 4,000 yards last year. Normangee’s Colin Reed led the way with 2,083 yards and 26 touchdowns. Brenham’s Troy Green, another A&M commit, had 1,155 yards and 17 touchdowns on 208 carries. The versatile White ran for 1,193 yards and 14 touchdowns last year despite being the third option for Consol. He averaged a staggering 13.4 yards per carry. Other members of the offensive line include Adrian Bellard of Brenham, John Jentsch of Milano, and Harvey Steele of Bremond. Steele made the All-BV first team last year as a junior, while Jentsch was named to the second team. Dominique Barton of Normangee is the all-purpose player, coming off a season in which he returned five punts for scores and finished with 21 touchdowns overall. The other defensive selections are linebackers Tim Cole of Brenham, Austin Dees of Franklin and Juan Casillas of Cameron, along with defensive backs Xavier Bethany of Burton and Jacob Malek of Navasota.

“We’ll throw the ball better than we did last year,” Bellard said. “There’s no question. We’ve got to find some receivers, but Tim Willett is one of them” Bellard has high praise for both quarterbacks. “Those are two really good quarterbacks and two really good kids,” Bellard said. “They work hard and I think both of them have the leadership qualities. We’re in very good shape at quarterback. They should be in good shape up front in an offensive line that includes Tim Hines and Keith Lewis. “Keith Lewis is the hardestworking football player that I have ever been associated with,” Bellard said of his guard. “He’s a ffighter who will get down in the trenches.
k ffrom an Ross Glenn, back injury, will play, giving Bryan good quickness. Tackle is a strong position. James Robertson played well in Bryan’s scrimmage and junior Zach Jones is talented, as well. He missed the scrimmage with a shoulder problem. “It’s going to be important that we keep Lance Graul healthy,” said Bellard, who is seeking a backup at center, but likes his line’s depth. “As our first center, Lance has done a good job this spring and this fall.” The Vikings’ defense rebounded with a good season in 2010 and some important veterans are back in every piece of that unit. Cornerback Johnny Childs had five interceptions and is the returning leader of the secondary.
Bellard has been happy with the play of V.J. Banks, Joseph Clay and Bykece Campbell. Shavon Pennie struggled in the scrimmage, but Bellard said that was a change from his usual play. “Zac Slaydon and De’Antre Beasley in the defensive line are going to be very good players,” Bellard said. “They are different types of players. Beasley is dynamic and can flat go. Slaydon is little bit more of a technician, who is in the right position.” The Vikings will play several players in the defensive front, using as many as five more players. “Most of them have active bodies and we can move them around,” Bellard said. “We’ve got a little depth there.” Hunter Maphet moves to an inside linebacker.

Westbrook set to do his part for Yoemen By DAVID CAMPBELL david.campbell@theeagle.com The state finalist Cameron Yoemen have holes to fill after graduating a large and talented class. Decrick “DeDe” Westbrook is filling holes the only way he knows how — ffast. While the Yoemen return two starters on each side of the ball, Westbrook counts for two WESTBROOK of them, back in his spots at receiver and in the secondary. “We’ve got a lot of underclassmen, so we’re pretty much rebuilding,” Westbrook said. The 6-0, 165-pound receiver had 75 receptions for 1,075 yards, scoring 16 touchdowns, despite missing time in the playoffs with a high ankle sprain. The Texas Sports Writers Association named him second-team allstate. His coach thinks that Westbrook could match those numbers. “I think he can,” said thirdyear Cameron coach Rick Rhoades. “To get over a thousand yards receiving at the high school level is exceptional. We’ve got to be a good football team. We played in 15 ball

nal win over Lagos Vista. “It was a high ankle sprain that I hurt in that East Chambers game on the sideline when I caught it under somebody’s body under a pile,” explained Westbrook. “It hurt really bad. I tried to play in the Tatum game. It was kind of nagging me in the state semifinal but I got back in when we played Lago. I was good to go and it was ready at state.” He caught seven passes for 34 yards in the 2A Division I title game and also had an exceptional punt return to help change the momentum of the game in favor the Yoemen. For the season, he returned three punts for touchdowns. While his good hands and leaping ability sharpen his skills as a wide receiver, it’s
the speed that makes him better than most. “At Texas Tech’s camp, I ran a 4.28 40 [yard dash],” said Westbrook, who thinks that receiver is his best spot. “I think with my speed I can beat a lot of guys deep. Safeties have got to be really fast.” That same speed helps in the secondary. The difference is in how he can display it. “At defensive back, you’re plugging holes and you’ve got to cover from place to place.” He plugged enough holes to record 91 tackles and had three interceptions and two fumble recoveries. In tradition-rich Cameron, one of the traditions is to compete in a variety of sports. Westbrook plays basketball and has run track, making sports a year-round commitment for him.

New Consol coach has reason for optimism By LARRY BOWEN larry.bowen@theeagle.com A&M Consolidated will enter the 2011 football season with more story lines than a reality series. It starts with the new coaching staff. David Raffield takes over for Jim Slaughter as the leader of the program and has shuff shuffled the staf stafff ffor or new offensive and defensive coordinators. Under Raffield the Tigers will switch from their ground-based offense to a version of the more popular spread attack with an increased emphasis on the passing game. There is also the chance in the spotlight for explosive running back Quinton White, who has committed to play for Tulsa. He rushed for more than 1,000 yards last year while serving as the No. 3 running option. White figures to play a leading role as a senior, but how will the new offe of nse suit him? What about senior quarterback Jacob Bronowski, who started last season as Consol went 11-2, won the District 125A championship and won two playoff games for the first time in five years? Bronowski will be asked to do more as Tiger quarterbacks replace the jet sweep hand-off with the shotgun formation pass. Don’t forget about the defense. Consol has more star potential on the defensive line than most, if not all, of the teams in the state, with a pair of Big 12 recruits looming large in the middle. How will it turn out? Maybe the better question is when

That means you’ve gone deep [three rounds] into the playoffs and you’ve got a chance. I think there’s definitely enough talent here to have a very successful season.” Last year Consol made the third round for the first time

Offensive linemen assigned to block A&M Consolidated defensive tackle J.J. Bynum this season may take heart in knowing that three years ago Bynum played a down in their cleats. Bynum will enter his senior season as one of the topranked defensive linemen in the state, a projected star for the Tigers and a college prospect already committed to sign with Texas Tech. Bynum’s coach proudly calls
the 6-foot-3, 275-pounder a beast and wonders if working against him in practice will be bad for the morale of Consol’s offenBYNUM sive linemen. It’s big stuff, but when Bynum joined the varsity as a sophomore he felt rather small. “My first play was vs. Round Rock McNeil, and they had really big linemen,” Bynum said. “I ran out onto the field
and I thought I was going up against guys that were 6-8 and 340. My first play, as soon as they said ‘hut,’ a couple of linemen knocked me on my butt about 5 yards back. After that they pulled me out of the game. Once I cleared my head and saw that those guys weren’t really that big, I was able to play like I could every other year. “I feel relieved now that I kind of have the upper hand since it’s my last year. Intimidation is half the battle on the line. If you can intimidate the person in n ffront of you,
most of the time you’re going to beat him.” Bynum should score high on the intimidation test. Last spring he finished second in the 275-pound class at the state powerlifti if ng meet with a total ifti lift of 1,700 pounds, which is more than the combined weight of high school starting lines. New head coach David Raffield saw another example of Bynum’s heavy lifting when he watched video from last season. Bynum tied for the team lead with 87 tackles and his 10 quarterback sacks were
twice as many as any other Tiger. “The first thing I saw with him was his highlight film from last year,” Raffield said, “It was amazing to watch how he could dominate. He plays with a lot of energy and he’s just bull strong. “He gives you a lot of different options. He can plug up that hole inside when he wants to.” Bynum was the District 125A newcomer of the year as a sophomore. He proved to be an

HEARNE — When Daniel Crumley tells you the Hearne Eagles football team will be competitive again, you have to listen. Doctors ordered Crumley to forgo football at one point in his high school career because of a heart disorder. He has since been cleared to play in the offensive line. “They put CRUMLEY me on a stress test,” Crumley said. “I ran about 13 or 14 minutes. The doctor told me, ‘You outrun guys who are perfectly healthy.’ He said it was kind of unprecedented.” In 2010, Hearne was 2-8 and the Eagles were shut out over four consecutive games in District 12-2A Division I. At this point, though, a turnaround does not seem daunting for Crumley, who has a simple recipe for accomplishment. “Teamwork,” Crumley said. “Last year, it was a ‘me’ team. It was more like ‘If I don’t get the ball, why should I play the next down?’” “This year, we’re more organized than we’ve been in awhile, since my freshman year. Seeing that come back to Hearne ... we strive harder.

CONSOL: Tigers appear to have answers for all of their questions Continued from 10
role in Raffield landing the job. Expect the Tigers to utilize spread formations, sometimes with one running back or none. It’s the system Raffield used at Cypress Falls, which he led to the 5A Division II championship game in 2006. “Everything’s in line to be sf , but I’m very sful very successful different than coach Slaughter and our philosophies on offense and defense are different, so there’s a learning curve,” Raffield said. “There’s going to be a little bit of frustration at times because it is fferent. I know in the long differ diff
run we’re going to be very successful. The question is in the short term. “The kids have adapted amazingly fast. I think they’re buying in. They’re seeing it’s a different game that I’m hoping will generate a lot of excitement.” The player facing the biggest change will be Bronowski, who threw only 84 passes (completing 43 for 738 yards) in 13 games last year. If the offense clicks, Bronowski could post those totals in four or five games this season. Receivers also have a chance to blossom in the new scheme. On the outside, con-
verted quarterback Justin Benden has almost unlimited potential, according to Raffield. The Tigers could be loaded with slot receivers, including former wingback Durasis Nutall, B.J. Crouch, Xavier Jones and Daniel Hulse. Slaug Slaughter ’s departure does not mean the offensive line will go unappreciated. Raffield said the blockers are vital, and he expects big things from a group led by tackles Cameron Cermin and Dillon Smith. Other proje ro cted roje starters are center Wyatt Smith and guards Luke Bush and Trey Salas.
Blocking opponents shouldn’t seem as tough after practicing against the Consol defensive front. End Jimmie Gilbert and tackle J.J. Bynum (a Texas Tech commit) were first-team all-district picks last season and end Fredrick Goodman also returns. The other tackle will be junior transfer Christian LaCouture from Odessa Permian, who has committed to sign with Texas A&M. “It has the potential to be the best D-line I’ve ever been around,” Raffield said. “They create a lot of pressure, which allows the linebackers freedom to run.”
Consol doesn’t return any linebackers with big-time statistics, but coaches like the group led by seniors Marshall Strain, David Levias and Joe Waithaka. The Tigers have a pair of veteran safeti saf es in seniors Brett Mahnke and Josue e fforced Ordonez. Both were into the starting lineup last year because of injuries to older players. “I get the benefit of that,” Raffield said. “They both are very talented.” Consol went into its only preseason scrimmage with six or seven players battling for the cornerback jobs.

Brenham’s Cole enjoys offense, defense By DAVID CAMPBELL david.campbell@theeagle.com Defense wins championships. Brenham linebacker Tim Cole can verify that. In a stellar junior season, his Cubs’ defense earned the District 174A championship. After reaching the 4A Division II state final as a sophomore, Cole would like to add some bigger championships, and he’ll even play some offense to try to contribute to that cause. “In occasional packCOLE ages, I’ll be coming in on offense to play fullback, Cole said. “It’s fun. I’ve always wanted to play offense in high school and d I ffinally get the chance. “Tim is a three-year starter for us and one of the finest young men I’ve ever met, Brenham coach Glen West said. “He’s just tremendous as a person and a very good football player. He’s one of the easiest guys to coach that I’ve ever had. West found that out early in Cole’s playing career. “In the middle of pressure situations, he responds, West said. “We saw that when he was a sophomore and we were playing Lamar, out of

Last season, 20 of Cole’s 76 tackles forced losses. Cole was the first Cub senior to earn a team captain’s spot, which he also held as a

It is a responsibility that he takes seriously. “Last year, I was scared to say things at certain times, but I’ve learned from past leaders on this football team and am not afraid to express my feelings,â€? And now for something completely different. Since their school opened, that has been a recurring e ffor the Rudder theme Rangers, who finally move into the mainstream. The Rangers are having to replace their first senior class. Coach C.M. Pier has directed the Rangers since before the school had walls, and he takes it all in stride. “We’ve got some holes we’ve got to fill, obviously, and you start at the quarterback position and the tailback position,” Pier said. “We’ve got three places on the offensive line. We’ve got to get those people in place.” Even after the Rangers’ first scrimmage, the team was still changing its makeup on offense. “Offensively, it’s tough early, with people stunting and things of that nature, until your offensive line comes together,” Pier said. “You just have to stay the course. Your defense has to carry you and your kicking game has to carry you.” The defense played well in the Rangers’ wins on their way to a 7-3 record in 2010, and key veterans return there. “On the defensive side, we didn’t have as many people leave,” Pier said. Brendan Steptoe had five interceptions and caused a fumble from his cornerback position. Austin Baron, who had 56 tackles, returns at safety. David Wilganowski, in the

Wilganowski has been key on Rudder’s defense By DAVID CAMPBELL david.campbell@theeagle.com Rudder defensive end David Wilganowski is a TCB kind of guy. Taking Care of Business. And it does not matter who gets in his way. “I think k iif he’s 6-foo -f t 5 and -foo 300 pounds, that’s OK,” said the Rangers’ senior linemen. “If he’s big, he’s small or he’s quick, it doesn’t matter. I just take care of what I take care of.” Wilganowski, who has com-
mitted to play college football at Rice, had 70 tackles and five sacks as a junior. He caused two fumbles and recovered one, which he ran back 48 yards. Add in a punt block and he was a handful for Rudder’s opponents. An injured ankle has slowed Wilganowski in early workouts, but he plans to be ready to go Friday when the Rangers host the Taylor Ducks at Merrill Green Stadium. Wilganowski bid goodbye to some friends when Rudder had its first graduating class.
There’s no looking back now, though with the new job at hand. “It really wasn’t a change because as a WILGANOWSKI freshman I played on the varsity,” Wilganowski said. “They were all my good friends. Last year, I thought I was one of the leaders of the team. If we needed to set the tone early in the game, I could
set it, and the game would go on.” “He has worked extremely hard to develop himself as a football player and a student,” Rudder coach C.M. Pier said. “He’s involved in several organizations and is an allaround student athlete.” He has swapped numbers and will wear 45 this season. “I changed because they may use me as a tight end this year,” said Wilganowski, who has almost always been a defensive lineman. “My freshman year, I played a little line-
backer, but my sophomore, junior and senior year, I’ll play a ffive-technique. “ While he hasn’t worked at other spots, he has worked on other skills. “I’ve done a lot of work with my hands, because my feet were always OK, but my hands weren’t so fast,” Wilganowski said. “I’ve done a lot better on that, just working to improve every year. It gives me something else.” Wilganowski believes

Rattler safety reminds many of his coach By DAVID CAMPBELL david.campbell@theeagle.com The late Florida A&M coach Jake Gaither is usually credited with coining the term “agile, mobile and hostile” to describe his players. In Navasota, they also like versatile — and for the Rattlers, Jacob Malek fills that role. Malek and Kadarius Baker have been contending for the starting quarterback role, but Navasota coach Lee Fedora calls MALEK Malek, the team’s free safety, “our quarterback on defense.” “I would like to say I am a smart football player,” Malek said. “It’s hard to FEDORA try to fool me. I work well with each and every corner of this team.” He also takes responsibility for every member of the defense. If a defensive lineman misses his assignment, Malek feels as though he is to blame. This is his defense. Fedora has heard others compare Malek’s play to that of Fedora when he filled many roles as a high igh school player at ig A&M Consolidated. It is a comparison that Fedora agrees with and appreciates. “If he tells you that he has one weakness, it is that he holds things very personally,” Fedora said. “I think that is a strength. He feels like he has to be the leader. That’s something I had mentally when I was growing up.”

NAVASOTA: Malek has many roles Continued from 18
Learning the quarterback spot means that Malek must have an understanding of what everyone’s role is on every play. “It helps me all-around as a football player, understanding what a player is doing as a running back or receiver, and knowing exactly where everybody is,” said Malek, who also feels he benefit ef s as a defen efit ef sive efen back. “I feel like I know the game all-around. I have the whole big picture.” On offense, Malek will play at running back or receiver, or take the snaps. He likes the idea of following in the footsteps of his good friend Kye Hildreth, who was a defensive secondary standout before taking over at the quarterback spot. “It’s a major help that others
have done this,” said Malek of Navasota’s tendency to seek players with all-around skills. “Kye Hildreth is probably my best friend and having guys who can be all-around players keeps it going. Kye is at Lamar now, doing the same thing, mixing it up all around. A lot of people know him as a good quarterback, but he was one of the better receivers on the team, too.” Malek is successful in multiple sports. He was the baseball team’s short stop and was a regional track qualifier. The drive to succeed carries to the classroom. “I pride myself on my grades,” Malek said. “I know I need to take care of my grades, so if I get lucky and get a scholarship for sports, I’ll have that in place.” He’s versatile in his classes, too, but has a ffavorite.
“I am kind of a math whiz,” said Malek, who nonetheless admits that personal football stats are not the kind of math he cares to follow. He just hopes to count the wins. Like his coach, Malek believes that the Rattlers should set the goals in increments, adding to them when the first is achieved. Each Navasota team does it that way, and it has been a fformula for success. Navasota teams have qualified for the quarterfin rf alss ffour rfin straight seasons. Some may see that as the Rattlers’ stopping point, but Malek views it as a chance to build on success. “It’s hard because a lot of guys hang their head and say we could have done better,” Malek said. “We pride ourselves in being a winning ball club.”

and Cole says there are aspects of his game that he must improve. “I work on my tackling technique and my speed,” said Cole, who has committed to play at the University of Texas. “I need to constantly stay in shape and work on my coverage. You have to brush up on all of those things and stay sharp.” Cole has high expectations for the 2011 Cubs defense after two scrimmages.
“At the rate we are going, if we continue working hard and listen to what the defensive coaches are telling us, we could be an even greater defense than last year,” said Cole, who reflected on the 2924 upset loss to Humble Kingwood Park at bi-district. “Of course, we were shocked and disappointed that we e ffell short of our goal.” The loss serves as a motivational boost for this season. “Coach West told us ‘You don’t want to graduate from high school with any regrets,’”
Cole said. “Go all out, which is what we are trying to do this year. We want great leadership. We have a lot of seniors out here who are just molding our team right now.” Cole says that there will always be pressure to win in Brenham. “It’s what’s expected of you,” Cole said. “Growing up in Brenham, every year you are expected to go to the playoffs. ff ffs. said. “Last year, I came every day in the summer and worked hard, earned my spot. I just went out and gave it my all.” This all proved to be pretty good as a cornerstone of the Vikings’ run-first attack. Hines’ blocking percentage improved as his junior year progressed and he finished with 91 knockdowns in just over 10 games. He was injured early in Bryan’s bidistrict loss to DeSoto. Powerlifting helped tone a tall and big body. Hines made the regional meet last spring, finishing eighth. His best squat lift was 540 pounds, with a bench press of 340 and
a dead lift of 535. “I’m going to try to put on more muscle this year,” Hines said. “I work on it a little bit during the season and a lot after the season.” Hines showed his playful side at the beginning of his junior year, attempting to worm his way into an interview along with fullback Chris Watson, who was going into his senior season. “I just wanted to see what ya’ll were talking about and wanted to be in on the interview,” said Hines, laughing. “We joke around a lot here, and when it’s time to get seri-

make for a dull boy, but his head coach says that is not the case with Hines. “I’ve always found that most great offensive linemen are the biggest kids that you’ve got,” Bryan coach Bob Bellard said, with a reference not relating to size. “They enjoy it. At the end of practice, after everything was done, if you had a touch football game, the first to be involved would be a great lineman. “He can go out there and he can throw it. He can catch it and do all of that stuff. He’s a kid at heart and that’s a good place to be if you’re going to be an offensive lineman.”

Normangee’s Barton hoping for big year By DAVID CAMPBELL david.campbell@theeagle.com Dominique Barton has more invested in his Normangee Panthers football team than most. “I just love football,” Barton said. “As a kid, I was a water boy for Normangee. I’ve been hanging in this system for a long time, and they know me back to front. Since I was a kid, I wanted to play for Coach [Brian] Mullinnix.” His coaches and teammates know him so well BARTON that the Panthers are willing to do what their opponents could not — limit Barton as a receiver. There is an underlying motive. Shifting him to quarterback at times puts the ball in his hands on every play. “I’ll be at receiver, too,” said Barton, who had 1,023 receiving yards and 15 touchdowns as a junior. “Anything I can do to help the team. I like quarterback but I like receiver, too.” “I met him for the first time when he was in my second grade elementary class,” Mullinnix said. “This year, more than any other, he has stepped up and is trying to be a team leader. You want to be in his corner and you want to see him succeed, because he has worked really hard.” The Panthers made a threeweek run into the playoffs in 2010, something Barton has been waiting and expecting to do for a long time. “I think I started when I was 11, and I was always here, close to the coaches,” Barton said. “I felt like I was one of them from the start. They put me under their wing. They took care of me, really.” Now he’s taking care of

business on the field. Barton played quarterback in spurts last season, too. The Panthers, after considering playing him full-time at the position, have shifted their approach.
A powerful 1-2 backfield punch that also includes senior runner Colin Reed (2,086 rushing yards, 24 touchdowns) will underline the versatility of both players. Reed,
a very good passer, will throw more passes, allowing Barton to remain the primary receiver. But there will be times

Andy Baxter is in contention to be valedictorian at Franklin High School. “I’ve got a tough battle with another person in the school,” Baxter said. As a threeyear starter on the defensive line for the Lions, he appreciates a challenge. “I always try to be the best BAXTER at everything I do,” said Baxter, whose competitive nature carries into his academics. “I’m a perfectionist. I have to get 100 on everything.” “For a defensive tackle, he’s undersized, but he reads so well and has that instinct for the game,” Franklin coach Mike Hedrick said. “If you look at him, you’d probably think he was a tight end or something, because he’s not that big of a kid. At maybe 175 pounds, he plays defensive tackle.” And he’s a smart player, too, Hedrick insists. “You might fool him one time, but you won’t fool him again.” His drive to succeed has him and his teammates looking at their district rival Lexington. BC Eagle TE keeps Bost tradition going By LARRY BOWEN larry.bowen@theeagle.com Brittain Bost isn’t built like a prototypical tight end or like Brazos Christian’s previous football-playing Bost brothers, but he’s got the right stuff inside. Bost, a senior, is the third brother from his family to play at Brazos Christian. He also is a tight end, a very important position for BOST the Eagles and one he’s playing for the first time. The Eagles went into preseason workouts seeking a replacement for all-district tight end Michael Paine. Coaches found a volunteer in Bost, who started at outside linebacker last year and was a reserve fullback. Although he didn’t seem a likely candidate, Bost had the job before the first scrimmage ended. “I told coach that I was willing to give tight ig end a shot if ight he needed me because I trust my hands and I trust that I can block,” Bost said. “I played O-line last year just a little bit on the second team, just for kicks basically. I knew we needed a good blocker there, and I had confidence in myself that I could get the job done.” Bost is 5-foot-9 and 160 pounds. That’s smaller than most tight ends and smaller than his older brothers Chase and Kurt. “Brittain has that little brother’s toughness,” Eagles coach Boyd Brigman said. “He’s not a big kid, but he plays big. He’s not afraid of anything. The best thing about the kid is his heart. He’s just 100 miles per hour, never stops.” The Bost brothers joined the Brazos Christian athletic department as home schoolers when that was allowed under TAPPS rules. Brittain has attended classes at the school since the eighth grade, growing into what Brigman calls one of the spiritual leaders of the student body. Bost enjoys working with youth at Central Baptist Church and hopes to become a youth minister or pastor. This fall, he will work on being a better tight end and outside linebacker while

striving to live up to the family name. “It’s an extreme pressure following my brothers,” Bost said. “Living in their shadows is not easy for me. They’re always watching me. They were extreme athletes … taller, athletic guys. My friends call them the Good Bosts and I’m just kind of the last one playing. “The only thing that God has blessed me with [athletically] is an attitude. I really

Lineman Gray helps anchor St. Joseph By LARRY BOWEN larry.bowen@theeagle.com Spencer Gray wants to become an Eagle Scout. He’s already an Eagle guard, an Eagle end and an Eagle adviser. Gray is a senior lineman for the St. Joseph football team. He has been on the varsity since he was a freshman, and his experience makes Gray GRA GRAY valuable not only for what he can do, but for what he can teach. St. Joseph coach Blake Evans counts on Gray to help tutor the Eagles’ young linemen. It’s a task that Gray welcomes. “I think it’s important, especially when you have a young team,” Gray said. “When you come into a program like St. Joseph as a ffreshman you can expect to at least get a little bit of playing time. It’s a very big change coming from middle school football to high school. “My freshman year I had seniors that did the same thing for me. I ffelt comfortable talking to them, and I want these guys to feel the same way about me. I’ve been there and I know what they’re going through.” The Eagles expect to be running through lots of holes provided by Gray, the team’s biggest player at 6-foot-2 and
245 pounds. This will be his third season to start, and the guard should team with 225pound tackle Chris Frieda to give St. Joseph an imposing left side of the offensive line. Gray was an honorable mention all-state selection on the offensive line in TAPPS Division III last year, setting the stage for what third-year coach Evans hopes will be a big senior season. “He has improved 100 percent since I got here,” Evans said. “He really got big into the weight room my first year

BVCHEA’s Clement aims for big season By LARRY BOWEN larry.bowen@theeagle.com Tommy Clement is determined to be more of a vocal leaderr ffor the Brazos Valley Christian Home Educators Association football team this season. He already knows how to talk touchdowns. CLEMENT The running back broke loose for 10 touchdowns in the Mustangs’ 6-man opener last year and seemed headed toward a breakout season until he injured his knee in the fourth game. Clement missed a couple of games because of a partial tear of his medial collateral ligament, but he returned to finish the season with 23 touchdowns as BVCHEA went 2-9. Clement expects big things from himself and the Mustangs during his senior season. “I think we’re going to be a lot better this year, especially our defense,” Clement said. “We won’t be giving up so many points and getting blown out like we did last year. Our defense is definitely going to be better.” Like most 6-man players, Clement plays offe of nse and defense. Last year he was one of few veteran players on a team that sometimes had five freshmen on the field. “It was kind of confusing for some of the guys last year,” Clement said. “I was trying to let everybody know what their job is and what they’re supposed to be doing. It got kind of overwhelming at some points, but I had fun with those guys. “Last year I wasn’t much of a vocal leader. That’s something I have to work on. I played well but never really said much to my teammates. I’m more comfortable with them now. I think it’s going to be a different year.” Marvin Clement is in his second year as head coach at BVCHEA, which has traditionally had players’ parents for coaches. He believes having players with more experience and keeping his son healthy could pay dividends for the Mustangs. “Last season we had nine players with no experience and seven of those were fresh-

I’m expecting Tommy to have a big year. If he doesn’t get hurt I think he could probably be the No. 1 rusher in the state. That’s what I would like to see, but only time will tell.” Tommy Clement played 11man n ffootball at Somerville as an eighth grader. This will be his fourth season with the BVCHEA program that competes in the Texas Christian Athletic League. At 5-foot-8, 163 pounds with good speed, Clement is a nice fit for the wide-open 6-man variation of football. “I love 6-man,” Clement said. “I like 11-man football, too, maybe a little better because of the positions. I’m a real big defensive player and I like safety or corner. But in 6man it’s different. You’re playing so many different posi-
tions. I play pretty much everywhere on offense and defense.” Clement played primarily tailback on offense last year and gained 1,230 yards. Along with the 23 rushing touchdowns, Clement caught two scoring passes and threw for two touchdowns. This season Clement expects to spend time at slotback in hopes of finding new ways to get the football in his hands. • NOTES — The Mustangs hope for big things from junior Matt Horne, who will play defensive end and receiver, and should be a key component on defense. … Coach Marvin Clement believes junior Chad Seely will have a break-out season at quarterback because of his good throwing arm. … Ben Winkler is a 6-1, 225pound sophomore who will provide strength at center on offense and linebacker on defense.

Allen Academy’s Brien has big job to do By LARRY BOWEN larry.bowen@theeagle.com
ALLEN ROSTER
Allen Academy football coaches have asked James Brien to do more this season. No word yet on whether they will petition to get a couple more hours added to each day. Even for an athlete at a small high school, Brien packs a remarkable amount into his 24. There’s the year-round club soccer he plays, along with six sports at Allen. “I’ve always doing liked BRIEN everything,” Brien said. “At a small school, Allen especially, I can do all this. It’s fun to get to do the difdif ferent stuff.” New Rams head football coach Jason Jolly expects Brien to be more of a vocal leader as he enters his senior season. Add one more thing to his to-do list, which in the fall includes running cross country and doing the academic work that got him to the top of his class. Brien plays basketball and soccer for Allen during the middle of the school year. He competes in track and golf in the spring. “It’s really hard during the fall because I have to get up early and stay up late, but it’s fun,” Brien said. On a typical fall school day,

Brien wakes up before 6 a.m. to work out with the cross country team before classes begin. There is 6-man football practice after school, along with studying. On Tuesday and Thursday nights, Brien practices with the Aggieland Texans soccer team. “The kid has just been all over the place in the three years I’ve been here,” Jolly said. “He plays every sport under the sun. He’s the Energizer Bunny. He doesn’t stop. He goes all-out in everything he does. He gets so much respect for me because he can’t do anything half-heartedly.” This will be Brien’s second season as the Rams’ starting quarterback. On defense he will play linebacker. He better save some breath for the occasional pep talk, too. “He’s always been a g guy to lead by example,” Jolly said. “It’ss g great for our younger kids to see it, but they need to hear it from him as well. I think he’ll be excited about that. He’s really come out of his

Brenham Christian wants to continue run By DAVID CAMPBELL david.campbell@theeagle.com Brenham Christian’s Stephen Ridgway hasn’t done much losing. “On the teams I’ve been on, I think we’ve only lost two games,” said the 5-9, 150pound senior receiver, whose Eagles walked off the field at Moody last December as the TAPPS 6man Division II state champions. “It was a once-in-alifetime expeRIDGW RIDGWAY rience. I will definitely remember it for a long time.” “After the state game, there wass a ffeeling of accomplishment. Playing football forr ffour months, it’s finally come to an end and we won state. It’s a good experience. I wouldn’t mind doing it again.” Even losing the bulk of a state championship team from a year ago has Ridgway and his returning Eagle teammates charting g a ffamiliar path — stay the course. Teamwork has led to success. “We’re really working well as a team,” said Ridgway, who has been a varsity player since his freshman season. “We’ve got a little inexperience. We’ve got some young guys. That will come with time. We’re looking pretty good, in my opinion.” As a senior and a returning starter, Ridgway will be expected to take a lead role. In a different venue, as a member of the chapel band, he has already done that. “I play guitar and I’m sort of the leader of the group in the band,” Ridgway said. “Every Monday, our school has a chapel service with the whole school. In the beginning of it, we sing about three songs. It’s a worship song and can be anything from contemporary Christian to old hymns. We do it all, whatever we think would be a good worship song.” His preference is a more modern sound. “I’ve got to admit old hymns played on an organ is not really my thing, but I know some people do like that,” Ridgway said. “I like hymns that have been contemporized. They are a little more upbeat. I’m not really a picky person. I kind of like it all.”

Just try to be prepared when the time comes to start playing so you don’t waste two weeks trying to get in shape. “I just try to teach him how to do things the right way.” Kirby is doing things a difif ifferent way, throwing the ball more than Leon did when his father was a standout running back. “Coach [Mike] Hedrick, who is now at Franklin, I was a freshman there in his first year at Leon,” Keith Watson said. “We were predominately a running team. We might have thrown two or three times a g game, if we did that.” Keith graduated from Leon in 1984 and Elise graduated a year later.

Kirby Watson took over at quarterback just as the Leon Cougars began their resurgence, during his sophomore season. But expectations for Watson, who is now a senior, have been high for much longer. He had a legacy to fulfill. His father, Keith Watson, is the leading rusher in Leon High School history and played college football as a cornerback at Tarleton State. “It feels good to play behind him,” Kirby said. “It’s kind of hard sometimes.” Keith says he had “about 5,000” yards rushing, but he was hardly the only high-caliber athlete in the family. Kirby’s mother Elise (Ware) Watson played on two statechampionship volleyball teams at Leon and was a state track competitor twice. “She ran the 400, the hardest race in track,” Kirby said. Kirby Watson likes the fact that his parents were so good in sports, but he’s carving out his own success at their alma mater. In his junior season, he passed for 1,023 yards and 12 touchdowns for a Leon team that faced six playoff off teams. of “We’re going to be about the same, and will try to keep it pretty balanced,” said Watson, who missed the Cougars’ opening scrimmage with a concussion. “We’re young.” Although Leon graduated a strong senior class, the way the Cougars finished the season buoyed the team, dropping a one-point decision to favored Rogers at bi-district. “It defin ef itely helps,” Watson efin said. “It showed us how good we actually were, to play with a team that good.” He’ll play for a different team this year with so many new players. “I’ve been looking forward to it,” Watson said. “I mean, everybody looks forward to their senior year. It feels good to be a senior and have people looking up to you.” When he gets home, though, ug ugh, he gets advice from his parents. “All of the time,” Kirby said. “That’s pretty much all we talk about during football season. They always push me. I don’t ever get a break. If I mess up on the field, I’ll probably hear about it when I get home.

Lexington’s Murray embraces pressure By LARRY BOWEN larry.bowen@theeagle.com In terms his mother can relate to, Josh Murray is set for his fourth tour of duty with the Lexington football team after being highly honored in his most recent deployment. Murray enters his senior season with the Eagle ag s having agle played on the varsity since he was a ffreshman. Last year he helped Lexington reach the Class 2A Division II state title MURRA MURRAY game, which was played after his mother started her second tour of duty in Iraq. Army Warrant Officer Christy Clements is due back in late September, which will let her see the final portion of her son’s impressive career with the Eagles. Murray has played for Lexington long enough and well enough that coach Jason Holcomb is counting on the two-way starter to be a coach on the field. “It’s an honor to be called that,” Murray said. “I most definitely want to do that. I like the pressure and the expectations. I ffeel like all the coaches expect a lot out of me, and so do a bunch of the players. I expect a lot out of myself.” The 5-foot-11, 175-pounder is coming off a terrific junior season. Murray earned first-team All-Brazos Valley and honorable mention all-state honors at receiver with 51 receptions for 995 yards and 13 touchdowns. He also was an all-district selection at free safety. That production, combined with his experience, makes Murray a natural choice as a team leader. “Josh is one of those real steady kids,” Holcomb said. “He’s always taken care of himself in and out of the classroom. He lives way out in the country, and he’s the type who will give kids a ride home after practice and stuff like that. When it comes to responsibility, he’s been really off the charts.” Last season Murray played a key role on a senior-driven team that lost to Idalou 20-3 in the state title game. Murray injured his shoulder in the semifinal round and played sparingly in the title game.

Last year Mickey Wiggins started at center, moved to fullback and then tailback as injuries ravaged the Snook football team. Wiggins handled everything his coaches threw at him, which might not come as a surprise to co-workers on his family’s watermelon farm. Caldwell moving Burns to use his speed By LARRY BOWEN larry.bowen@theeagle.com It didn’t take long for Caldwell’s revamped coaching staff to find a new position for speedy DeAndre Burns. “I showed up for the first day of practice and was at tailback, Burns said. “The next day I changed to wide receiver. Former offensive line coach Chance Locklear was promoted to replace Dale Williams as head coach in May. Although the coaching
change came late, it did give the Hornets a new boss with knowledge of the personnel. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound Burns rushed for more than 700 yards as a junior last season, when he was the team’s third option behind BURNS quarterback D.J. Cumby and running back Kedrin Sheppard. Burns showed

We just didn’t throw the ball a whole lot. “We felt he would be able to add a dimension to our new offense on the outside, being a vertical threat and being able to get him the ball in space. I like giving the hit out rather than taking them like the offensive linemen take.” Bynum and defensive end Jimmie Gilbert both made first-team all-district last season, and coaches expect big things at the other end from Fredrick Goodman. The line
also got a boost this year when junior tackle Christian LaCouture transferred from Odessa Permian. LaCouture already has committed to play for Texas A&M. “There’s only three offensive linemen to block the two of us [tackles],” Bynum said. “If two of them block me it will leave him open. If two of them block him it will leave me open. We should always be making tackles in the backfield. “Nine times out of 10, I think alll ffou al our of us will beat the oneon-one block. Burton’s Bethany enjoys balanced attack By DAVID CAMPBELL david.campbell@theeagle.com Xavier Bethany burst on to the athletics scene ass a ffreshman basketball player for the Burton Panthers. He displayed his ability at the UIL state track meet as a multi-event competitor last spring. Bethany can do it all, but he does football really well. As a junior quarterback, he completed 70 of 118 passes for 1,278 yards. Every fifth pass he attempted BETHANY went for a touchdown, getting 24 scoring passes. “We’re balanced,” Bethany said. “I prefer to run, but if a man’s wide open and I’m wide open to run, I’ll probably throw it to get the yardage. It helps a lot [to have good receivers]. If they think we are passing it all of the time, we can sneak in a running play.” He was just as effective running the football. Bethany carried 125 times for 1,525 yards and 21 scores. “When I was young, I used to like basketball, but as I started getting older, I started lifting weights,” Bethany said. “I started going towards football more. It’s pretty much football now.” “He’s worked harder than anybody I’ve had since I’ve been in coaching,” Burton coach Clinton Smith said. “He’s a real modest kid and kind of shy. He’s nott fflamboyant. He probably outworks 99 percent of the people he plays against.” While Bethany doesn’t plan to give up the other sports, he gave Burton fans a tantalizing taste of how good football might be. Bethany quarterbacked the Panthers to their most successful season ever in 2010, when they reached the state quarterfinals before losing to eventual state champion Falls City. “We just need to work harder, go out and play to the best of our ability and get the win,” Bethany said. “We are going to keep running the stuff we have run. We’ll see what works best.” Burton averaged more than 47 points per game during the 2010 season and swept to the 13-A Division II district championship. The Panthers’ clos-

Bethany returns for his senior year bigger and seeking better, but knows he can’t do this alone. As a quarterback, he is in a natural leadership position. “I try to keep us pumped up,” Bethany said. “I just help talk to people if they need it.” Setting an example has worked, too. His football contributions are not limited to offense. An All-Brazos Valley defensive player, Bethany recorded 144 tackles, including 77 solo stops, and intercepted four passes. He also is the kicker. “I think I might leave on kick returns,” Bethany said. “I don’t think I go out on kick returns.” He hopes to play college football and realizes his future could be in the secondary. “I’m a defensive player,” stated Bethany, firmly. “I love defense. I like tackling. That’s my main thing.” “He’s the leader on our basketball team, the football team and the track team,” Smith said. “He went out for baseball

Somerville’s Shawn Phallan found his spot at inside linebacker a long time ago. He is still adjusting to a move into the offensive line. But Phallan is aware that if the Somerville Yeguas can reverse a 3-7 season, it will require all hands on deck. Either way, he may be called on to deck someone. PHALLAN “I think we are going to have to do it both ways,” Phallan said. “Our defense is going to have to hold them, but our offense is going to have to move the ball, too. I think that was one of our problems last year, but I think we’ve cleared that up.” Like playing on both sides of the line of scrimmage, Phallan thought that turning things around would require a multi-pronged approach. “Hard work and a lot of attitude adjustment,” said the 510, 205-pound senior. “It’s a

Catching hogs has helped Iola Bulldog By LARRY BOWEN larry.bowen@theeagle.com Brendan Vaughn works in the trenches for the Iola football team. His paying job takes him to woods, fields and bogs. Vaughn will play offensive guard and defens def ive tackle for the Bulldogs this season. It’s tough work, but seems a little tame compared to what Vaughn does in his parttime job. “I work for US Hog Outfitters, a company that removes wild VAUGHN VA hogs all over Texas,” Vaughn said. “We have farmers with hundreds of acres of crop land who hire us.” Vaughn has been working for the Iola-based company for about six years. He has grown into a good-sized lineman for Class A att 6 ffeet and 230 pounds. “It helped me in football,” Vaughn said. “The guy that started the company made me pull hogs out, and that was like pulling sleds with my weight training. I might have to pull a 200-pound hog a mile. Doing that and running miles out there chasing hogs around gets you in shape. It’s an adrenaline rush. We go out with dogs and catch hogs live. We don’t kill them. We give them to needy families.” If the job made Vaughn tougher, so has playing for Scott Bishop. After coaching Vaughn and the other offensive linemen n ffor three years, Bishop was promoted to head coach this year to replace Roddy McDougald, who resigned. “I’ve been Brendan’s position coach since he’s been in high school,” Bishop said. “I’m kind of a hot-head out there [on the field] and he’s used to that. I push them pretty good and he’s really bought in.” Vaughn is a senior in his third season with the varsity. Bishop expects big things from him. “He is pretty much the anchor of our line,” Bishop said. “He’s a hard worker, one of those e g guys that you don’t have to get on, who’s going to go as hard as he can every time. “He’s a leader who kind of picks everybody up instead of dragging everybody down.

When I got here he was a ffreshman and he’s always been like that. He’s never complained. If you tell him to run through a wall, then he’s going to run through a wall.” Vaughn takes his role as a veteran leader seriously. He remembers how he was helped by older players such as former standouts Rex McDougald and Casey Giles. “Being a senior, the younger players look up to you,” Vaughn said. “I understand

that. You have to set an example by going hard and trying your best. I welcome that, because I looked up to the players ahead of me like Rex and Casey.” Although his hog-hunting job seems to fit a defender’s mindset, Vaughn favors offense. He will play pulling guard for the Bulldogs, a position that will allow him to sometimes escape the inside battles to lead running backs around the corner.

was more about him growing. Just to see him fight back and the way he’s hung in there with it makes you admire a kid like that.” Crumley has played both right and left tackle this summer and center. “Every person has to have a backup because people get fatigued,” Crumley said. “They get tired and that’s what a team does. We’ve got each other’s back.” Lymas thinks his offe of nsive line can make a difference. “Those guys have been together, all of them, for four years,” he said. “To see them
interchange and work with each other is unbelievable.” Crumley says the team aspect of football begins with the offensive line, but for a true reversal of fortune, everyone must contribute. “Hey, there’s 11 guys on our side and 11 guys on their side and you have to take care of one of them,” Crumley said of his backs. “That’s how this game works. It’s not like you get a ffree card and get to run up the middle. You’ve got to fight with every single down. It starts with us, but we need them. ous, we get serious.” Along with fellow members of the offensive line such as Keith Lewis and Ross Glenn, guys he likes to hang around with, Hines is convinced that the line will be better as a unit and is developing camaraderie. Hines is sure he’s doing his part. “I have gotten quicker off the ball, faster and a lot stronger than I was last year,” Hines said. “I feel more confident than I was last year. Coaches had me improve my stance and the way I come off the ball.” He’s not yet convinced his
coaches that he could throw the ball in a game, though. “I can throw as good as the quarterbacks,” Hines contended, with a smile. Can he move as well? “Yeah.” Could the quarterbacks block as well for him? “Naw.” Hines has found his best spot at offensive tackle and he’s aiming to be better. “He’s got all of the tools, athletically, that he needs,” Bellard said. “I think he’ll improve greatly as a player this year. That’s his greatest opportunity, to go out and improve technique, and become a total player, a complete player.”

That’s what we are going to use, our speed. Speed kills.” That is a personal strength. “He’s gotten bigger, taller

Brown keeps mood light for Calvert By DAVID CAMPBELL david.campbell@theeagle.com For a coach who has been dealt a new hand, Calvert’s Coylin Grimes is convinced he has a wild card. Or maybe the joker. Elijah Brown is the only defensive starter returning for the Trojans. An injury moved him into the starting center role for the final three games of 2010. He’s the only starter back BROWN on offense, too. “Practice is serious business, but if somebody messes up, I’ll joke with them,” Brown said. “I just like to make them laugh. I go off of what they do and just imitate them.” He’s not an actor. He’s a reactor. “I make it in a ffunny way,” laughed Brown, who plays defensive end and center at 59, 165 pounds. “I connect. I joke with them. I lighten up their spirits.” “Elijah is pretty much the team clown, probably the e ffunniest guy we have,” Grimes said. “He will keep a smile on everybody’s face and he’s always going to have a joke.” “He likes cracking jokes,” quarterback Tyrone Huffman confirmed. “He’ll find anything to crack a joke about.” The team clown has a serious side, though. “It’s hard losing five starting seniors,” said Brown of his rebuilding team. “I’m trying to teach the guys not to come in with their heads down, but to come with all they’ve got.” Brown got into the starting lineup as a sophomore. He had 67 tackles, was named to all-region and first team allstate and earned all-state attention his junior year, the first for the Trojans in Class A 6-man Division II. He has felt the need take a leadership role on a team stocked with young players. “The stage now is not the junior high stage,” Brown said. “We are trying to teach them the program. The seniors always carried us with them. I’m a three-year starter now and I’ve got to teach the younger guys what it’s like to be at this level.”

The Rockdale Tigers’ summer preparation for the season has been in flux. There were changes on eff Miller’s staff of ef Coach Jeff assistants. Star running back Daniel Brooks moved to Port Lavaca Calhoun and even the Tigers’ first scheduled opponent changed. Austin Eastside Memorial decided not to play varsity football and DAVID DA has since been replaced by Abilene Wylie. The Tigers needed consistency. They found it in center Patrick David. “I guess there’s more pressure because I have the most experience now,” David said. “The other players are looking to me for advice. If they don’t know what to do on a play, they are told to ask me.” “A couple of years ago, we felt we had the best team that Rockdale has had in a while, but we were missing one guy and it was a center,” said Miller. “We started looking around and our best option was David playing as a sophomore.” While he played well as a sophomore, David said that it helped to have the support of his older teammates. Milano’s Jentsch has role model in family By LARRY BOWEN larry.bowen@theeagle.com Milano football player John Jentsch admits to feeling a bit of pressure trying to live up to the family name, but not because his father is the Eagles’ head coach. John is comfortable having Craig Jentsch for his coach. The family ties can be a bit binding when it JENTSCH comes to John’s brother Matthew, a fformer Milano standout whose legacy drives his 6-foot-4, 230-pound “little brother.” “It’s pretty fun playing for my dad,” Jentsch said. “It’s actually better than most people think it would be. He yells at me harder than he yells at other people just because he wants me to do better because he knows me on a personal level. But since we’re at a small school, he knows a lot of the kids on a personal level. “I get more pressure [because of] my older brother than because of my dad. Matt played in the coaches association all-star game. If I could play as good as him, I know I would be doing good.” John, who will start at right tackle on offe of nse and left end on defense, is a strong candidate to join Matthew ass a ffirstteam All-Brazos Valley selection. John made the second team last season and his position coach expects big things from him this year. “I rely on him a lot to anchor the offensive line,” said Robbie Robinson, the offensive line coach and defensive coordinator. “He makes a lot of the line calls for us and by doing so makes our team better. He makes the players around him better because they understand their roles better. “I think he’s equally effective on both sides of the ball. He’s a good offensive lineman and a good defensive end as well. We’re better when he’s on the field for sure.” Jentsch is the top-ranked student in his class with a 4.4 grade point average. He is a blocking, tackling argument against the dumb jock stereotype. “Linemen have to be some of the smartest people on the

Jacob White grew up in the shadow of his older brother, but the Bremond football player will step into the spotlight this fall. White, who spent the last two seasons as a receiver and cornerback, will move to quarterback and safety for his senior year. He should understand the WHITE change because his brother, Johnathon, made it a couple of years ago. Johnathon White played receiver before he replaced LiDarral Bailey as Bremond’s quarterback. Johnathon finished his brilliant high school career by leading the Tigers to the state semifinals last season as quarterback and Class A defensive player of the year. Try filling those shoes. “We are two completely difdif ferent players, but there are some pressures about me living up to that and being able to produce like he did,” Jacob said. “At the same time, I see myself contributing to the team in a different way than he did. “I have been kind of in his shadow, but I like being his little brother. Long moving to fullback for Mustangs By LARRY BOWEN larry.bowen@theeagle.com Madisonville senior Colton Long is making a position switch. The senior on the Madisonville football team will continue to start at defensive tackle, but on offense Long will move from the line to fullback. Don’t take the shift to the LONG backfield as a sign Long is going soft. “When I play fullback I like to think of myself as a defensive tackle who gets a running start on somebody,” Long said. “I keep that defensive mentality throughout the game and stay aggressive on every play.” That attitude in a 6-foot-1 1/2, 250-pounder might concern opposing linebackers. It definitely signals a new direction for the Madisonville offense. “We’re going to be a downhill, 3-yards-and-a-cloud-ofdust kind of team this year because we graduated quite a bit of speed,” Madisonville coach Greg Morgan said. “His physicality kind of lends itself to us being more of a Wisconsin-type offense where we’re gonna line up and come at you.” The University of Wisconsin

Tyler Peterson was a sophomore when he chose to be a receiver on the Centerville varsity rather than a quarterback on the JV, and it wasn’t that hard a decision. He had been a quarterback in junior high and as a ffreshman, but Peterson didn’t mind changing posit i o n s . Receivers get PETERSON on the field, too, and being there is what counts with Peterson. “They told me they could keep me as a quarterback on the JV or move me up and use me as a receiver on varsity,” Peterson said. “I told them I didn’t care. I just wanted to play. I don’t really care what position I’m at. I just want to be on the field playing.” The 5-foot-11, 165-pound senior should get plenty of playing time this year. Peterson is expected to start at receiver on offense and at cornerback on defense. “He had a great summer,” Centerville coach Kyle Hardee said. “He dedicated himself in the weight room all through the spring and summer, and I think it’s going to pay dividends for him. We’re really excited about the kind of season he’s going to have. Certainly he’s a young man that’s going to play a big role on both sides of the football for us.” For that Peterson has his grandmother, among others, to thank. Peterson was a third grader when a visit to his grandmother’s pool turned into a life-threatening situation. He was electrocuted when he fell and touched pipes from a well. His grandmother, who was a nurse, resuscitated him. “I tripped over a hose and landed on two pipes connected to the well,” Peterson said. “It just kept me connected to it and my heart stopped. My grandma went and shut the breaker off and gave me CPR. “It probably wouldn’t have been too good if my grandmother wasn’t a nurse. My brother and my uncle and aunt were trying to pull me off and [electricity] was just throwing them off.”
