Integrating Water into Your Living Space
The Eagle • theeagle.com

2012 Fall Parade Of Homes™
Brandon Lacy, Design Division Head/ Principal Designer The Ground Crew LLC
It crossed my mind to write about how water’s appearance is affected by cohesion and adhesion, along with a couple other enjoyable technical highlights. To be honest, I would probably end up dozing off just proof reading something so boring. So to avoid stepping on that proverbial land mine, I’m relieved to focus on the more spirited aspects of water features that tend to spark and delight our interest. The notion that the trickling sound of a gentle stream can help bring calm to a stressful day or that the crash of a dramatic waterfall can inject excitement into the monotony of the work week is utterly fascinating. We can’t help but to have an emotional response to the characteristics that water brings to the table. The sound alone is helpful when trying to relax, but when combined with sight and touch (ie: dipping your feet into the pool or gliding your fingers through falling water as you pass) it can be quite an effective combination. We are invoked by water in such a way that the majority of people would much rather read a book on a bench by a
stream or lake than sit in a library. This occurrence is why water is one of the main components in creating a successful park or back-yard design. It is comforting to think that something as effortless as passive interaction with water can have such a positive physiological effect. Inherently we are drawn to water, be that the crashing waves of a sandy beach, rapids forcing their way through a boulder laden river bank, or the rhythm of a cascading Italian fountain. It’s understandable that in whatever environment we find ourselves, if there is moving water we always seem to be attracted to its many forms. Since the fountains’ inception, they have been used as a place for people to gather. Not to mention the fact that unless you lived next to a stream, lake or other natural water supply, a fountain was essential to sustain life. Even in today’s lingo the idea of the fountain being a place for people to come together is perpetuated through the saying “gatherin’ round the water cooler”. I’m not sure exactly why we are so mesmerized by the look, sound and feel of water. Could it be that physically our bodies know that we just can’t survive without it, or that psychologically, since we
Barrett Place
Edgefield
are made of mostly water, there is something deep within us that can’t help but to be drawn to it? Perhaps spiritually we are attracted to water’s close association with healing and cleansing qualities? In actuality I don’t think it is any of those choices, but the fact that we are somehow magnetized to such a simple act as water and gravity working together is
Sutherland
undeniable. Whether you lean more toward a natural pond ecosystem or a polished metal sculpture emitting sheets of water, my hope is that you better understand a few of the benefits of integrating some form of water feature into your living space. Thank you for your time.

Grey is no longer viewed as a trend color in design circles, but is now viewed by professional designers as the new neutral. “Grey is the new brown,” says Erinn Valencich, L.A.-based interior designer and blogger for HGTV’s Design Happens. “I used a greybased floor in my new design studio because it goes well under a myriad of other wood tones. You don’t have to use grey-based furniture on top of it - grey looks great with all wood tones.” Another benefit to grey-based flooring, Valencich adds, is that it’s very forgiving. Just look to large furniture retailers to see how their offerings now highlight grey-based tones. The bleached-out, weathered Scandinavian look is very popular right now, Valencich says. It’s perfect
Colors that complement
Don’t be afraid of color when designing a room with a grey-based floor, Valencich says. She suggests one of these color palettes to make a room shine: • 50 shades of blue - Grey looks beautiful with any shade of blue, from soft powder blue to vibrant turquoise to charming daisy blue. • Bananas Foster - A favorite color trio of Valencich’s is yellow, chocolate and cream on top of a grey-based floor. The subtle flooring highlights the rich colors for a bold, decadent look. • Lovely with lavender - Lavender is one of this year’s hottest colors and a long-time partner for grey. Valencich suggests adding any color of purple to a grey floor for standout results. “Consider creating a focal point around a muted lavender wall and add some deep, rich, regal purple accents to bring it all together.” Need help choosing your colors? Try out Quick-Step’s “Design A Room” online tool that allows you to select different flooring options and see how they look with hundreds of different Valspar paint colors. Or search “The Idea Gallery” on Valspar.com for ideas to spark your room makeover, like Valspar’s “organic elements” color trend. Inspired by the calming energy of nature, this palette of chalky hues, earthy browns and mineral greys creates balance and stability. Then add a bright honeysuckle beige for an unexpected pop.
Getting started
When beginning a room makeover project, the first step is choosing a clear color palette. Wall color is a great place to begin, Valencich says, but any object - a rug, chair or artwork - can serve as your inspiration. Next, think of the design process in layers - the trick is to coordinate and contrast. “If your paint, accessories, furniture and flooring are all the same color, the room will feel flat,” Valencich advises. “So create drama by using a pop of color or by layering varying shades of the same color for a refined tone-on-tone look.” A well-executed color palette can transform any space with great results. Grey is the new brown
to pair with a new grey floor.
Friday, October 12, 2012
(ARA) - Do you pin your favorite bathroom makeover ideas on Pinterest, look for inspirational kitchen designs or dream about new decorating styles for your home? If so, you’re not alone. Many homeowners are opting to makeover their homes this year instead of upgrading to a new one. According to a recent survey by Better Homes & Gardens magazine, consumers rank “style upgrades” as the most important component of their upcoming home improvement plans, followed by storage. For future projects, consumers said their top style upgrades include flooring, countertops, faucets and fixtures. Laminate flooring experts from Quick-Step suggest beginning a style upgrade project by installing neutralcolored flooring. Neutral floors create the perfect canvas to help tie all of a room’s design elements together. What is a fresh, new and widelypopular neutral color within interior design circles? That would be grey. Some of the hottest hardwood flooring designs for 2012 offer traditionally American brown tones that are delicately infused with a grey influence. Quick-Step offers a variety of styles and options with grey undertones - from rustic oak plank designs and floors with wirebrushed detailing to the same visuals and charm of a hardwood floor constructed from reclaimed, vintage wood. Quick-Step’s Reclaime Heathered Oak flooring complements a wide range of decorating styles. Grey-toned floors provide the ideal backdrop to let your style and favorite colors shine through, and they also transition well as interior design styles and trends change.

2012 Fall Parade Of Homes™
Growing families looking for larger homes (ARA) - More and more households have extended family living together under one roof, and the tight fit has some families in the market for a larger home. From 2007 to 2009, there was a 10.5 percent increase in multigenerational homes that translates to 51 million Americans, or 16.7 percent of the population, who lived in homes with at least two generations of adults, according to a recent report from Pew Research Center. If your household is growing and you’re looking for a larger space to accommodate your needs and family size, the housing market is in your favor. Low prices and attractive interest rates have created an opportunity for anyone looking to make a larger housing purchase. As multi-generational living becomes more prevalent, builders and re-modelers have found a niche market in creating homes designed to fit the lifestyle. For the “Sandwich Generation,” a generation of people
who are caring for their aging parents while supporting their own children, there are advantages to having children and grandparents under one roof such as sharing of household responsibilities and finances and increased focus on family time together. With these advantages, however, there may be a need for a larger home to accommodate a growing family. A recent TD Bank survey found that of respondents who were planning to sell their current home and buy up, one-third attributed it to a larger or growing family. To finance a bigger home purchase, you can look to a jumbo mortgage. Jumbo mortgages are home loans that are bigger than normal. Normal varies by location, but in most housing markets, it’s more than $417,000.
Choosing the right fixed rate fit
Fixed rate mortgages are currently at historic lows. These loans provide comfort and security though payments spanning 15 or 30
years. If you’re planning to stay in your home for a long period time, they may be a good option.
Adjustable rate mortgages for your lifestyle
If you’re not looking to own your home for an extended period of time, an adjustable rate mortgage may be the best fit for your lifestyle. An adjustable rate mortgage can allow you to save money if you’re able to pay down your mortgage over a one-, five-, seven-, 10- or even 15-year period. Some lenders offer significant flexibility in the length of the loan and the frequency of rate adjustments in their ARM products. For example, a 5/5 ARM has the interest rate which remains stable for five years and then readjusts once every five years after that. Finding the right loan is important as even a 1 percent interest rate reduction created by taking out an adjustable rate mortgage may create sizable savings without necessarily sacrificing security.
Refinancing your home
Payback financing options, or piggyback options, allow for a second mortgage or home equity loan to be taken out by a borrower at the same time the first mortgage is started or refinanced. Some banks may offer
a piggyback option but you might see a higher blended interest rate. Portfolio lenders, like TD Bank, can help minimize the down payment and interest rate. Portfolio lenders are able to do this because they don’t sell their loans to third-parties, resulting in more affordable, flexible home financing options for a borrower.
Qualifying for your loan
Qualifying for a jumbo mortgage does require stronger credentials, so be prepared for the process. Though the process can be more rigorous, some banks like TD Bank treat jumbo mortgages as they treat other mortgage products, guaranteeing a decision on the loan in less than 24 hours. A quick decision can help buyers close sooner or move faster when making an offer on the property they are looking to buy. Overall, the residential mortgage landscape is experiencing gradual improvements, with housing prices stabilizing and even improving in some markets. If you’re looking for a larger space to accommodate your growing family, consider beginning your home buying process now. When looking into lenders, consider a portfolio lender, who can offer flexible terms and lending guidelines, to best fit your unique borrowing needs.
