Easy Tips to Create the Perfect Outdoor Living Room It’s that time of year - time to dust off your patio furniture, fill your planters and set up to spend the spring outdoors. While expanding an outdoor space is a top renovation project for homeowners and renters alike, it does not have to induce a state of pre-spring stress. With a few simple tips, you can create an outdoor space that adds value and comfort to your home.

Focus on your front entrance

“Enhance your home’s curb appeal by brightening up your front entrance,” says The Home Depot’s Director of Trend and Design, Sarah Fishburne. “A coat of brightly colored paint on your front door can redefine the look of your home.” This year, go bold with your color choice - try coral, tomato red, teal, aqua, violet, pistachio and cobalt. Add a wreath, doormat, kick plates and new door hardware to complete the look. Knobs and handles with a burnished bronze finish also hide fingerprints and don’t show tarnish as easily. After all, a fabulous front entrance can make a

powerful first impression.

Design your dream deck

The base of any great outdoor space is a clean slate. Start with a good scrub and power wash. Echo the feel of your interior to create a cohesive style that makes it easy for you to move indoor decor outside when you are hosting. Start by creating a sense of space with an arbor or trellis. Use colors, furniture finishes and seasonal accessories that complement each other, such as a beautiful custom patio set from Brown Jordan. If you’re unsure where to start, use an online patio planning tool to make it easier to customize the look. Mix and match patterns, textures and sheens for a designer-inspired finish. For urban dwellers in apartments or small spaces, you can create a great outdoor space by installing a vertical garden filled with succulents and a small cocktail table and chairs.

Renovation Loans Give Homebuyers an Edge in a Competitive Market Just a year ago homebuyers could choose from a bounty of properties on the market. Today things are starkly different. In many locations throughout the United States, inventory of homes for sale is at historic lows, creating a seller’s market where multiple buyers get into bidding wars over movein-ready homes. “Move-in-ready homes may be selling like hotcakes, but older homes or damaged properties are often passed over,” says Margaret Kelly, CEO with RE/MAX. “This is a big opportunity for smart

buyers who are willing to overlook cosmetic or other imperfections.” If buyers can look beyond aesthetic characteristics like paint color, hardware and floor coverings, they may discover a diamond in the rough, especially if the home is in the neighborhood where they prefer to live. For example, if they like the overall design of a particular home, but the kitchen is straight out of the ‘70s and the deck needs major repairs, a renovation loan can help them purchase the property while upgrading

From oor to Fixtures: Top Spring Home Decor Trends add Style and Personality Spring is in the air, which means it’s time to refresh your indoor spaces to reflect the energy and optimism of the season. The top home decor trends of spring 2014 take a fresh approach to traditional design elements to create an aesthetic that is fresh and full of life. Best yet, the trends are easily accessible, so anyone can update their space with a few simple tips.

Carpet

More homeowners are seeking the beauty, comfort and safety that carpet provides, making it a top flooring trend for spring 2014 and beyond. What types of carpet are popular?“New soft fibers, says Vickie Gilstrap, director of design services for The Dixie Group, a top U.S. carpet manufacturer. “Consumers went away from wall-to-wall carpet, as hard surface flooring gained in popularity. Then, people began to miss the softness and warmth of carpet. Carpet absorbs sound, making homes quieter, and traps dust at the base of the carpet fibers so that dust doesn’t circulate in the room air.The soft fibers give us a reason to put carpet down again. She is also seeing increased interest in “mixedmedia carpet styles - with hi-lustre and low-lustre yarns used in the same carpet. Additionally, patterns are being featured on top of texture, giving a multidimensional appearance to flooring.

Not only stylish, carpet is healthy, too. People with allergies or other sensitivities can choose carpet as a way to improve indoor air quality. A recent study supports previous findings that carpet, when effectively cleaned, traps allergens and other particles, resulting in less dust, dander and airborne contaminants escaping into the air. For more information, visit the Carpet and Rug Institute at www.carpet-rug.org.

Color

Thoughtful use of color in home design is a top trend for 2014. “Colors are getting warmer, notes Gilstrap. “Taupe is the bridge color taking us from gray to browner tones. Warm pinks are returning, as well as warmer greens like moss and olive - even apple. Keep in mind adding personality to a space through use of warm color doesn’t necessarily require a complete interior overhaul. Consider incorporating spring colors using accent pieces. It’s easy to switch up pillows, throws or artwork without investing a lot of time or money. Plus it’s a fun way to update the personality of your favorite spaces every

The Many Benefits of Buying Locally

Buying locally is a great way for consumers to find the products and services they’re looking for and help their local economy along the way. The small businesses in your community may be owned by your next door neighbor, who relies on his or her fellow townspeople to

keep the business going strong. Buying locally is not only beneficial for local business owners, but buying locally benefits consumers and members of the community in a number of ways. Buying locally creates jobs. The number of unemployed men and women has gradually declined in recent years, but those figures are still high in many communities. Buying locally creates jobs in your community, potentially creating a job for you or a friend or family member. Buying locally helps the environment. Buying within your community reduces the amount of fuel you’re likely to use for a weekend shopping trip while also reducing pollution. In addition, many local store owners use local materials and ingredients, reducing the amount of fuel consumed to get products into the store. Buying locally creates a more closely knit community. Juggling a career and a family can make it hard for men and women to get to know their neighbors and other members of their community. Buying locally is an opportunity to strengthen that bond.

Outdoor Living Continued from 7 Accessorize and add color “Accessories aren’t just about making a fashion statement,” says Fishburne. “In fact, adding finishing touches to your front and back porch creates a polished look and feel.” Not only does a weather-resistant, indoor/ outdoor rug anchor furniture just like in a living room but it also adds a punch of pattern and color to complement your outdoor furniture. Adding big, bright flowers, such as red geraniums is a simple and cost effective way to brighten up your outdoor space. Not a gardener? Not a problem. Achieve beautiful results with minimal effort by using Drop ‘N Bloom pre-mixed containers of bright spring flowers. For additional pop, whitewash or paint your tired planters with this season’s hottest colors - pollen yellow or aquatic green.

Plan for a party What’s a great outdoor space without others to share it with? Set up your space to host parties all season long. Don’t leave your guests in the dark - hang up string lights or place solar lights around the patio to get the party going. Create ambiance and a cool conversation piece with a fire pit or add colorful throw pillows for your guests to sit back and relax. Finally, set yourself up for a season of signature meals by planting an herb garden. Make the night more interactive by inviting your guests to help pick herbs that will complement the meal. For this and more project inspiration, check out The Home Depot’s Trend and Design Tumblr. For more quick and easy gardening tips, sign up for The Garden Club, which provides regionalized garden information, forums and deals.

Trim adds Decorative new Dimensions Throughout Home Interiors When people think of home trim, they often picture the beauty it brings to exteriors - but the right trim products can add arrestingly elegant and bold decorative elements throughout home interiors, too. High-quality cellular PVC trim from Kleer Lumber, a division of The Tapco Group, is an innovative, versatile solution that can do exactly that. All homeowners need is their imagination for creative, eye-catching and even unexpected applications. From beadboard for beautiful wainscoting to moldings for stunning cornices and valances, the possibilities are unlimited. Kleer trimboard, moldings and sheets offer the rich authentic style you desire. Apply these products anywhere you would traditionally use wood throughout the interior - without concerns about moisture or insect damage because Kleer’s cellular PVC material is impervious. The trim, moldings and sheets are available in a range of thicknesses, widths and lengths. Dimensionally stable and easy to cut, route and machine, all Kleer products are ideal for creating complex custom details, such as fluted pilasters for regal-looking rooms. Heat-bending can be used for elegant curves, such as door and ceiling arches and winding staircases. Available in pure white, the trimboard, moldings and sheets retain their fresh

appearance for decades with just soap and water. While Kleer products never need paint to add beauty, they can be painted to complement, match or contrast other interior elements. They enliven and grace any interior space, from dining and living rooms to foyers and staircases. Of course, this trim works especially well in moisture-prone spaces such as baths, laundry rooms and finished basements. Kleer trimboard has a natural wood grain finish and is also available with a two-sided smooth finish. From warm, inviting applications around door frames and archways to even more sophisticated elements, such as stylish cornices, robust box beams, builtin bookcases, and dramatic window valences and aprons. Trimboard also provides the ideal solution for hard-to-finish curved walls, arches and staircases. Kleer’s finely crafted crown moldings create elegant transitions between walls and ceilings, and perfectly finished ceiling beams. Moldings can also be installed as cozy-looking chair rails in dining rooms and other areas where walls require protection. For a sophisticated finishing touch, the moldings can be paired with warm wainscoting made from sheets and trim. Since all moldings come in standard 16-foot lengths, there are few finger joints on longer trim runs. In addition, you don’t have to worry about the finger joints showing through the paint.

Available in smooth and grain finishes, these sheets are easily cut to desired sizes and can be used as solid panels, such as for wainscoting or square-panels in box-beam ceilings. They can cover drywall and clad bare or worn areas to create finished, lowmaintenance surfaces. The versatile sheets add alluring focal points to dining rooms, living rooms, or other

entertaining spaces too - they’re a particularly stunning decorative asset when installed as raised panels for a multi-dimensional look. With unmatched quality, aesthetics, durability and versatility, Kleer gives homeowners newfound freedom when it comes to interior trim applications. For more information, visit www.tapcoint. com.

Renovations Continued from 8 the kitchen and outdoor space exactly how they want them. “Many homebuyers are surprised you don’t need a ton of money in the bank to fund improvements,” explains Kelly. “A special type of loan called a renovation loan is ideal for these types of homes because it covers both the cost of the mortgage and repairs.” Renovation loans can also help buyers who want to purchase in a particular neighborhood where most home prices exceed their budget. Properties that need work are typically listed at a lower cost and often go unsold, creating an opportunity for people willing to make improvements. Buyers can use a renovation loan to get into the neighborhood of their dreams, quickly build equity and customize a home to their personal preferences. Several variations of renovation loans are available. FHA renovation loans are called 203(k) loans. How much money you want to borrow and the kinds of improvements you plan to

make will determine which of the two 203(k) types you need. Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae have their own specific types of renovation loans. Requirements for the borrower, the amount you can borrow, and the overall structure of the loan are different for each program. Typically, the loan is based on the estimated home value after improvements, and buyers will need to get bids from licensed contractors to help determine the total loan amount as well as a timeline for the work to be completed. Because finding a home and getting approval of a renovation loan can be complicated, it’s wise for buyers to work with a real estate specialist who has experience in these types of sales. For example, RE/MAX agents lead the industry in professional designations and many have experience working with buyers who want a renovation loan. Visit www.remax.com to find an agent in your area. “A renovation loan really does give homebuyers an edge in today’s competitive market,” says Kelly. “It’s definitely something to research and determine whether it’s right for you.”

Spring Home Decor Continued from 9 season.

Texture and pattern

This spring, more homeowners are using textures and patterns to make a visual statement through design. Strategic use of texture and patterns can highlight certain interior spaces, manipulate the light within the room and influence scale. Blending both adds visual interest and helps homeowners create a unique space to call their own. “Layering of pattern and texture - in floors, walls, upholstery, window treatments - gives a more individualized feel,” says Gilstrap. Scared of mixing patterns and textures? She suggests placing patterns on stairs or in hallways. If big and bold patterns aren’t your taste, consider sticking to small, neutral patterns that can be a subtle way to add visual interest and design complexity to interior spaces. Lighting Lighting plays an important two-pronged role: it makes a space functional and also helps define its

design aesthetic. Adjusting the task lighting within a room can instantly make the space more livable and highlight the design motif. Another easy lighting update is purchasing new lamps or simply adding new shades to existing lamps - a great way to refresh a space with minimal cost. Keep in mind, when selecting fixtures, there’s no longer a need to avoid gold tones. “Gold is coming backwe are seeing more gold and copper and less silver,” says Gilstrap. Want to really redefine your home’s lighting? Ornamental lighting is big this year with designers thinking outside the box when it comes to how and where these fixtures can be used. For example, dramatic chandeliers are no longer reserved for formal spaces such as the dining room or foyer. This spring, you can add a touch of elegance to any space by adding a stylish chandelier, plus it doesn’t take up much design real estate space. Bedrooms, basements and bars are just a few unique areas where chandeliers can be featured.

Things to Consider Before Downsizing your Home Once their kids have left the nest, many men and women over 50 begin to consider downsizing their homes. Downsizing to a smaller home can be beneficial for a variety of reasons, including less home to clean and maintain, more affordable utility bills and lower property taxes. But the decision to downsize is rarely black and white, and men and women often struggle with that decision. Perhaps the most difficult part of the decision of whether or not to downsize to a smaller home concerns the sentimental attachment many homeowners, especially those with children, have to their homes. The home might be too big for your current needs, but it also was the same place where your son took his first steps and where your daughter lost her first tooth. Saying goodbye to a place that was home to so many memories isn’t easy. But there’s more than just sentimental value to consider when deciding whether

20 | April 25, 2014

or not to downsize your home after the kids have grown up and moved out.

Personal finances

Your financial situation merits significant consideration when deciding if the time is right to downsize your home. If your retirement nest egg is not as substantial as you would like it to be, then it would seem as though downsizing to a smaller, more affordable home is a great opportunity for you to start catching up on your retirement savings. But that’s only true if your new home won’t incur any additional expenses that are already taken care of in your current home. For example, your current home may be fully furnished, while a new, smaller home may require you to buy all new furniture because your existing items simply won’t fit. The cost of such furnishings can be considerable. If you plan to move into a condominium, you can expect to pay monthly homeowners association

Spring pArAde Of HOmeS 2014

fees, and such fees are often substantial. So while the condo itself might be smaller, the additional expenses associated with the property may end up making the smaller home more expensive and prevent you from saving more money for retirement.

Real estate market

There are seller’s markets and there are buyer’s markets, and ideally you would like to sell your home in a seller’s market. But keep in mind that this might be the same market in which you hope to buy a new home. The nature of the real estate market depends on a host of factors, including geography. If the city or town where you currently live is in the midst of a seller’s market and you are planning on moving to a location where buyers have the upper hand, then now might be a great time

Now’s the Time to Spring into DIY Action with Home Improvement Projects It’s time to start dreaming of a spring home makeover. Sources of design inspiration, like Pinterest, are plentiful and can help make your home decor and renovation projects easy and fun. In fact, now is the season to gather ideas and get started.

Warm up to color

A fresh coat of paint is an inexpensive way to transform a tired look into a vibrant vision. Choosing the perfect shade is often the most time consuming and nerve-wracking part of the process. Knowing this, paint manufacturers are coming to the rescue and providing many new tools to help give you the color confidence you need. For example, pick up small-size paint samples, like Platinum Color Samples from Dutch Boy, tinted in your favorite shades and apply directly to the walls you’re interested in painting. These color paint samples help you visualize how the entire space will look before investing time and money on a large painting project. Plus, the Dutch Boy color samples are available

in Dutch Boy’s highest-quality interior paint so you can test its best paint and perfect color together.

Simple sampling

Once you have a sample size of your perfect shade of paint, it’s time to test your hunch. Apply the sample paint on several walls. This will help you envision the color’s look in various light sources, both natural and artificial. Be sure to check the painted wall at different times of the day - giving you a truer view of the end results. If you prefer, you can paint large white poster boards with your sample paint and move them around the room to verify your vision. When testing multiple colors, avoid painting sample strips too close together as this might distort the appearance of the color. When you’re happy with a color selection, head to a local retailer to purchase the paint

Downsizing Continued from 20 to move. But if you currently live in a buyer’s market and hope to move to a seller’s market, then you may end up paying a steep price, even when downsizing to a smaller home. Things may even themselves out if you want to downsize to a smaller home within your current community, but do your homework nonetheless, researching the time of year when you’re most likely to get the most for your home and find the best deal on your next place. The advantage men and women considering downsizing have is that they are rarely in a rush to move out of their current home and into their next one. This gives them ample time to make the real estate market work for them.

footage to good use after all. If you have always wanted your own art studio, then now might be the perfect time to make that a reality. Always wanted a room devoted to home theater? Get to work on converting your basement from an all-purpose game room to your own private movie theater. If, after considering the space in your home, you find that the extra square footage really is just upkeep you aren’t especially interested in doing, then you would no doubt like a cozier home that’s less of a responsibility to maintain. Downsizing a home is something many men and women over 50 consider after their children have moved out. Such a decision is rarely easy, so homeowners should take as much time as they need before making a final decision to move or stay put. LP143966

Size up your projects

The fun doesn’t have to stop with the walls. Dutch Boy Platinum color samples can also work for smaller interior projects because the sample contains a premium paint. Try stenciling your favorite inspirational sayings or words of wisdom on your living room or office area walls. Another quick project is to use the samples to paint the trim on picture frames or mirrors to coordinate with your newly painted room.

Add some final touches

After you plan your painting projects, it’s important to prepare for the small details and finishing touches that help bring everything together. Break out the hot glue gun, some of your favorite springtime silk flowers and bright ribbons to make a whimsical wreath for the entrance to your home. When April showers bring May flowers, you will already have the perfect entryway accessory to welcome in the

Space

How much space do you really need? Once the kids have moved out, couples may feel like all of that extra space is going to waste. But that can be a knee-jerk reaction, and upon a more thorough examination of the space and your needs you may just find that you can put all of that extra square

To give your patio some pizzazz, why not create some decorative, weather-proof pillows or cushions? Utilize durable, all-weather fabrics in complementary hues and patterns to achieve the lounge-worthy look you’re craving. This small sewing project will add a level of comfort and creativity to an otherwise boring patio set. As the end of winter is upon us, it’s time to plan for spring home improvement plans. Decked out From Coast to Coast: Top Outdoor Living Trends for 2014 From genteel porches in the East to sleek, seaside balconies in the West, the popularity of outdoor living spaces is poised for significant growth from coast to coast with industry analysts predicting it will be a $5.7 billion market by 2016. Reinforcing these projections, 63 percent of architects cite an outdoor living space as the most popular “special function room” in housing construction, according to the American Institute of Architects. What’s more, the-Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association reports that homebuilders list decks among the top three features most requested with new home buys. “Decks and porches are now considered true extensions of a home’s living space,” says Adam Zambanini, vice president of marketing for Trex Company, the world’s largest manufacturer of highperformance wood-alternative decking and railing. “People are showing increased interest in maximizing the function, comfort and personalization of their outdoor spaces and are realizing that it’s far more economical to expand their living space outside than to enlarge or renovate their home’s interior.” As planning and preparation for the 2014 outdoor living season begins, the experts at Trex offer a glimpse into the national trends that will be emerging outside homes across America in 2014.

Size matters

The biggest trend in decks right now is the increase in square footage. Gone are the days of the 20-by-10-foot rectangle with just enough room for a grill and some patio furniture. Today’s decks are expanding both horizontally and vertically. Demand for decks with multiple tiers is increasing, as are requests to finish the space below an elevated deck.

Thinking outside the box

When it comes to deck designs, today’s homeowners also are thinking way outside the box and customizing nearly every aspect of their outdoor living spaces. Remodelers and architects report increased interest in pergolas and walls to define different functional areas and create privacy, as well as integrated features like built-in benches, planter boxes and storage. Similarly, consumer interest in accessories such as deck lighting, ornamental post caps and decorative balusters also is on the rise. “We are seeing a lot more mixing of materials,” reports Zambanini. “Contractors and consumers alike are creating highly customized deck designs

Build a Better Bath on a Budget

Do you cringe every time you step into your bathroom? If so, it may be time to remodel. Bathroom remodels are the most popular remodeling project, according to a recent survey by the National Association of Home Builders. But remodeling doesn’t have to be a budget buster. You can simply improve what you already have to get the spa-like retreat you’re seeking. Here are a few tips to get you started on your redesign.

Decorative details

Remodeling is a costly job on its own, but trying to add unique details and decor to your project makes it that much more expensive. To get a custom look without the price tag, start bargain shopping online or at a local antique shop. Look for one-of-a-kind finds like a beautifully framed mirror. A mirror adds the illusion of space and changes the look of a bathroom - whether you’re going for a traditional, transitional or modern feel. If you find a piece that doesn’t perfectly fit, add a coat of paint to match the rest of your space. Artwork adds a sophisticated touch and the best part is it doesn’t have to cost a lot. There are several websites where you can print artwork in a variety

of styles and then frame it yourself. Accessories can also make a big difference; a new shower curtain, towels (in beautiful patterns), candles and window treatments go a long way. Moen offers a variety of accessories to complement any bath. Pull together the look of the space by adding knobs and pulls to your vanity matching the finish of the faucet. You can also include other accessories like towel bars and robe hooks for organization and an updated look.

Fancy fixtures

Easily bring beauty to any bath by upgrading your fixtures. Start by swapping the sink faucet. Available exclusively at The Home Depot, the new Darcy bathroom faucet collection from Moen blends clean lines and soft modern styling. Featuring a beautiful swan-like spout to bring a relaxed feel to the bath, Darcy is available in on-trend finishes like Chrome and Moen’s Spot Resist Brushed Nickel, which resists fingerprints and water spots to help maintain the brilliance of the faucet for a fresh appearance. You can also extend the modern look of Darcy into the bath

Decked Out Continued from 24 combining two or more decking shades and also mixing materials such as composite railings in white with contrasting black aluminum balusters. Our product offering allows for more than 1,200 different design combinations so there truly is something for every taste and lifestyle.”

High-performance, low maintenance

In addition to design aesthetics, homeowners across the country are increasingly concerned with performance. Specifically, they want materials that allow them to spend more time enjoying their outdoor living space rather than maintaining it. This motivation has contributed to the continued innovation and popularity of composite decking and railing. Unlike wood or even traditional composites, high-performance wood alternatives like Trex Transcend resist fading, staining, scratching and mold - and won’t rot, warp, crack or splinter. Upkeep is hassle-free and requires no sanding, staining or painting. Food and

drink spills wash off easily with just soap and water.

Sustainability

Composite decking also responds to another growing trend among U.S. homeowners - interest in sustainable, eco-friendly building materials. “High-performance decking provides the look and feel of real wood, but without the environmental impact, making it an ideal choice for today’s eco-conscious consumers,” notes Zambanini. The entire high-performance Trex decking portfolio is manufactured from more than 95 percent recycled content, including reclaimed wood and sawdust, as well as plastic from many common household items. The company salvages and keeps more than 400 million pounds of plastic and wood scrap out of landfills each year. To see examples of these and other top outdoor living trends, visit the Trex Inspiration Gallery at www.trex.com/ inspiration/gallery, where images are sorted by region and environment. For more information, go to www.trex.com.

Better Bath Continued from 25 with tub and shower fixtures including a five-function showerhead - allowing each user to have a customized showering experience.

Pretty with paint

Paint is your friend when you’re on a budget - it makes the greatest impact for the least amount of money. When updating a bath, choose a satin finish for a washable surface and look for humidity-resistant paints to avoid streaks and mildew. The color you choose will set the tone - lighter colors are best for small spaces to give a spacious, bright feeling; while darker colors provide a more modern look. Do you have a small space but want to use darker tones? Paint one wall dark and make it the focal point behind the vanity or against the tub. Don’t be afraid of using color. Remember: paint can easily be changed if you don’t like it down the road. You can also add splashes of color with wallpaper borders, bath rugs and soap dishes.

Contain clutter Getting rid of clutter and organizing will make your bathroom a more relaxing area. Dedicate space for storage. Bath accessories, such as towel bars and robe hooks will keep items off the floor.- Wall shelves are also an excellent solution and there are a variety of options - from smaller, decorative shelves that can hold perfume and toiletries - to larger hotel shelves that provide the perfect storage location for towels.-To prevent underthe-sink clutter, a rolling cart can provide each family member with their own tray to store bathroom goods, and it can be moved out of the way when guests arrive. Redecorating is all about shopping smart and finding space-changing details when you’re on a budget. These easy, inexpensive tips will hopefully inspire you to get started. Off The Wall

Wallpaper returns with modern looks, eco-friendly design Wallpaper has made a comeback during the past few years and added plenty of upgrades, according to interior design experts. As an alternative to paint, wallpaper can bring color and texture to any room and do so in an eco-friendly way. There are plenty of reasons why people choose wallpaper over paint, said Jon Sherman, owner of Flavor Paper. “Wallpaper can add a visual conversation to the space rather than a simple color,” he said. “There is additional depth, content, story, drama, color, etc. Wallpaper creates a mood while paint creates a color only. Wallpaper also creates a layer of insulation and protection for your wall.” Wallpaper is enjoying its current popularity “because wallpaper is being used more like art and it’s seen as a kind of investment in art, but much less expensive than art,” said Shanan Campanaro, creative director and founder of Eskayel, a Brooklyn, N.Y.-based design studio with an environmentally responsible approach to interior surface design.

What’s different

Changing how the wallpaper is created has made wallpaper an ecologically sound choice for the home. “The wallpaper industry in the ‘80s was not ecofriendly at all,” Campanaro said. “Everything was

printed on vinyl, and vinyl is still used in tons of inks.” Synthetic and oil-based paints used to be the standard. The wallpaper was hard to dispose of and “off-gassed,” referring to the evaporation of chemical compounds used in manufacturing. As the chemicals evaporated, it was possible to smell them as they spread indoor air pollutants that could irritate the respiratory system. “I think today people are realizing that we need to create more sustainable products and ones that are safer for our home environments,” Campanaro said. Sherman said, “We use only water-based inks for most of our products and offer a wide variety of eco-friendly materials. This is especially important in public spaces or nurseries where people with sensitivities need to be protected from harmful allergens or carcinogens.” Eskayel wallpaper “is all eco-friendly. The papers have no volatile organic compounds and the inks are totally water-based,” said Campanaro.

A modern look

Wallpaper can be greener, and still look dramatic and eye-catching. Hand-screening and digitally printing wallpaper “allows us to play with scale infinitely and utilize the full array of colors and shading, which is not possible in a screen print,” Sherman said. “Photographic images are a big seller in the digital arena. It also allows for very small-run,

custom jobs that would otherwise be extremely expensive to hand-screen.” Can you go green and still find great styles? “Of course,” Campanaro said. “Right now I am really interested in citrus acid colors like chartreuse and

bright peachy oranges and pinks or turquoises.” For Sherman, “fractal designs, metallics, especially copper/brassy colors and artist collaborations,” are trending.
