BEST OF ‘17 DENTIST

D

r. Michael K. Reece, DDS is no stranger to winning awards. This is the 10th time he has been voted Best Dentist in The Eagle’s Readers’ Choice Awards. His reputation as a leader in dentistry is well known, and his patients have benefited from his advanced techniques.

fillings are all visual clues. With implant retained teeth, Dr. Reece’s patients gain an ageless smile in addition to the functional and health benefits. Advanced cosmetic training allows him to design dental implants with the subtle cosmetic results that can make patients look up to 10 years younger.

Dr. Reece has been a pioneer Dr. Reece is one of only in the procedures that allow 25 LVI Master Dentists in the patients with ailing or failing world. With over 200,000 teeth to permanently change dentists in America and their lives through the use of dental implants that look completely natural and function just like real teeth.

15,000 dentists in Texas, that puts him among a very select group to have earned the title Master Dentist. He has received specialized training in dental implant surgery, aesthetic dentistry, dentures, treatment of TMJ/TMD, sedation dentistry and a host of other areas that comprise what is called neuromuscular or comprehensive dentistry. Dr. Reece made an observation several years ago that leading dentists were becoming part of a more integrated model of medicine focused on our total health. This observation set off a multi-year quest to take the advanced classes needed to acquire the skills and experience to integrate all the latest procedures and technology.

Patients, including other dentists, now come to Dr. Reece from across the state and country to seek out his unique combination of talents and obtain the beautiful smiles that he and his team consistently produce. Patients who had lost hope or were seeking an answer to facial pain, headaches or jaw bone loss now can receive the treatment they need, allowing them to focus on getting their lives back with new smiles and new optimism.

more exciting for Dr. Reece and his patients. Recently, he announced the merger of Dr. Jouett’s practice into his own, and is in the final stages of completing the design of their new state-of-the-art dental center to be built in Park Hudson. The new practice name will be Reece/Jouett Dental Group, and the new office will join the list of the most advanced dental centers in America, allowing patients to experience dentistry unlike any time in the past.

This friendly, talented man has accomplished a lot in his career, but is hardly resting on his laurels; he and his team continue to train and challenge themselves to push to new heights of what is possible in dentistry.

Dr. Reece is also recognized as Texas Monthly Super Dentist and serves as Chief Clinical Instructor at the prestigious Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dentistry, where he teaches other dentists from around the globe his techniques in several classes throughout the year.

The future is looking even

Most people over the age of 50 have been taught it is best to keep repairing their teeth no matter what the condition, cost or discomfort might be. Dr. Reece extracts failed teeth and places implants in as little as one day, allowing patients to walk out of his office with a complete set of new, fully functional teeth. Thanks to advances in sedation dentistry, the procedure can also be comfortable and anxiety free. The results are quite amazing. Patients who weren’t able to eat the foods they wanted are now able to enjoy foods the rest of us take for granted. Corn on the cob, steak, apples and more are instantly back on the menu. Ailing and failing teeth also give away age - chips, gaps, missing teeth and amalgam

Dr. Michael K. Reece, DDS and team are all smiles upon winning The Eagle’s Readers’ Choice Award for Best Dentist. Left to right are: Kimberly, Kimm, Dr. Reece, Tory and Connie.

The library and museum underwent a major renovation and rededication 10 years after opening -- adding many more interactive exhibits, videos and hands-on activities. Additionally, it features changing temporary exhibits that highlight various aspects of President Bush’s life and career.

“We’re very honored to again be named the ‘Best Museum,’” he said. “We greatly appreciate the continued support of our friends and neighbors in

APARTMENT COMMUNITY

H

awthorne at Traditions, voted the 2017 “Best Apartment Community,” treats residents to luxury living and friendly, caring service. Hawthorne at Traditions is a gorgeous luxury apartment community that offers homes in an amazing area of Bryan-College Station, said Savannah Bennett, Hawthorne at Traditions community manager. “Our residents love our hospitality, our do-for-you attitude as well as our petfriendly features,” Bennett said. “With multiple amenities on site, there’s always something to do in your own ‘backyard.’ We are innovative

and try to think of things that we can do to make our residents feel like there’s nothing better.” Hawthorne Residential Partners (HRP) took over Hawthorne at Traditions, formerly known as Legacy at Traditions, in February 2015. With the purchase came a complete transition of culture throughout the community, in an effort to showcase what it has to offer to prospective residents that other communities don’t. “Texas has such a great presence, and it was an easy choice to become a part of the city and its own culture,” Bennett noted. She believes service is what

sets Hawthorne at Traditions apart from the competition. “Apartments are everywhere, but we provide homes as well as service with a huge smile,” Bennett said. “With our ‘Live It’ culture, we believe in leaving people better than you found them. Whether it’s taking the time to check on a pet at home, having the office staff clean a pool when our service team is busy or our services team is signing out a package to a resident, we work together to do what we can to make our residents’ lives just a bit simpler. We are a personable group that really enjoys building relationships with our residents, including pets, and when you have those relationships, you just want to make people happy!” She believes that level of dedicated service led to the Readers’ Choice Award. “We won the Readers’ Choice Award because we do our best to stay attentive and really do what we can to make our residents happy,” Bennett

R e a d e r s ’ C h o i c e Aw a r d s

said. “We see our residents as friends and neighbors, and we want them to feel comfortable within our gates as well as with us.” Since HRP took over in 2015, Hawthorne at Traditions has worked to improve its offerings, including the addition of 156 homes for renters in the Bryan-College Station area. “With this expansion, we also gained an additional pet park, amenity center with conference room, 1,000-square-foot fitness center, additional Starbucks Coffee bar and Cyber Café, another saltwater pool and spa and an exceptional extended staff to better serve our residents’ needs. With such an amazing asset and a great foundation, we only wanted to offer more, and now we can do that,” Bennett said.

The apartment community plans to continue focusing on its residents and expanding its reputation. “We want to be sure that we hear our residents and their suggestions to continue being the best, so that we can implement change as we continue to evolve with the developments around us,” Bennett said. The Hawthorne at Traditions team is “ecstatic” about winning the award, she said, and the company aims to keep improving. “It only makes us want to continue to work harder to provide better service,” she said. “We love getting kudos, but we also welcome constructive criticism, so we know what we can do to improve.”

call home, and it is a direct reflection of the leadership within the department. In September 2009, Bryan Police Chief Eric Buske came to serve the citizens of our community, after a 25-year tenure with the Omaha Police Department in Nebraska. Chief Buske started as a uniformed patrol officer and progressed up the ranks to police chief in Omaha. In less than eight years here, Chief Buske has enhanced the Bryan Police Department’s community policing efforts by expanding the Neighborhood Enforcement

Team (NET), initiating a Junior Citizen Police Academy for high school students, and coordinating a Spanish Language Citizen Police Academy. He led the development of a fiveyear strategic plan for the department that is updated annually to ensure the goals are met and challenges are identified. Furthermore, he has taken his knowledge and skills as a police chief and applied them in volunteer roles within the Bryan Noon Lions Club and numerous organizations supporting the ongoing education of police officers across the nation. These accomplishments can only be had with the support of the community. And we are fortunate that each of you show your support by participating in a variety of events sponsored by the Bryan Police Department, from the Easter

egg hunt at the Blue Bunny Breakfast to adopting angels from our Blue Angel Tree. But you especially demonstrated your commitment to our officers’ wellbeing and continued success through your overwhelming encouragement when Officer Joel Bravo was shot in the line of duty. You would be hard pressed to find a community that showed a greater outpouring of love and support than those that call Bryan home. We thank you, our citizens, for selecting our very own Police Chief Eric Buske as the 2017 Readers’ Choice for “Best

BEST OF ‘17 SEAFOOD

T

he iconic boat has been on Villa Maria in Bryan for over three decades, but in the last eight years, it has been transformed into an upbeat family friendly eatery. Owners Wade and Mary Beckman, both Aggies, opened Shipwreck Grill in 2009. With a fun, casual vibe and focus on good food and great service, the restaurant continues to be a local favorite. In a restaurant shaped like an old fishing trawler, waiters serve seafood; great seafood, but Shipwreck has managed to round out its menu with

“big as your face burgers,” hearty salads and even healthy chicken options. Some of the treats and local favorites are oysters shucked fresh at the bar, the Walk-The-Plank Burger, which includes everything but the kitchen sink, and the original buffalo crawfish tails. Whether it is the traditional shrimp baskets or platters you are craving, or the melody of Cajun boiled seafood with corn and Andouille sausage in our Boil’nPot, Shipwreck Grill has got you covered. The local dive is still best known for its boiled crawfish. Crawfish season runs from

January until late May or early June. Shipwreck boils them five nights a week, and most nights you will have to wait an hour to get in the door.

our restaurant, but our guests and staff. I think they really appreciate that we are totally invested in this community, and it shows,” Mary Beckman said.

“We boil our crawfish like you would boil them at home; which is not easy in a commercial environment, but it is the only way to make them taste great,” Wade Beckman said.

In addition to Shipwreck, the couple own Amico Nave Ristorante, an Italian restaurant across from the boat, and Admiral Catering, a full-service

catering company. When asked if this was the beginning of their empire, they both responded, “No, we just love what we do!” The next time you are trying to decide where to dine, give Shipwreck Grill a try, and you might just discover what many others have; a true hidden gem.

The restaurant’s two outdoor patios provide the perfect place to experience crawfish with friends and family. On Thursday nights the guests are treated to live music from 7-10 p.m. Whether with a group of friends or just a date, it is the perfect place to relax and celebrate Friday Eve! Wade and Mary Beckman absolutely love this community, and they are thrilled to have been chosen as Readers’ Choice Award winners.

rom its simple beginnings 35 years ago, Must Be Heaven has grown with its customers’ appetites to include four locations in the Brazos Valley. They offer what no other locally-owned sandwich shop can -- variety, quality, value and location! It all started in 1982 in downtown Brenham with a simple menu featuring a limited selection of sandwiches, quiche, baked potatoes and desserts. Connie Wilder believed that the city would never allow its heart and soul to die, so she invested in

equipment, inventory and a small staff to begin her dream. Connie’s business thrived. She sold her venture to Shirley Syptak, who took Must Be Heaven to another level, but it wasn’t until 1999 when Traci and Charlie Pyle, new transplants from Bryan, began to expand the core sandwich menu to new heights. The Pyles, along with Donna and Baine Morrow, the franchise owners of the three BryanCollege Station locations, took the original core menu, which included Must Be Heaven’s proprietary Tuna Salad and Chicken Salad recipes, and

right Beginnings Pre-School, 2017 Readers’ Choice “Best Day Care Center” winner, teaches young children to enjoy learning in a safe, caring environment. Bright Beginnings Pre-School opened in 2002, OwnerDirector Carrie Parris said, because there was a need for quality early childhood education in Bryan-College Station. The pre-school serves children 18 months through 5 years old, and is open 7 a.m.-6 p.m. on weekdays. “Our mission is to provide the highest quality of educational

and developmental services for your child in a safe and caring environment. Teaching children that learning is fun, rewarding and exciting gives them a ‘bright beginning’ for a lifetime of success,” Parris said. “I feel we do a great job of preparing children for a successful start in kindergarten through a structured curriculum and environment. Our families seem to especially enjoy being able to log on to the kiddie cam on our website for a live streaming look into their child’s day.” When Bright Beginnings PreSchool first opened, its spots filled quickly. After a couple of

years, the business took all available space in the facility and was able to build one more classroom specifically for the youngest toddlers.

because of their dedication. “I think we won because of the positive relationships that we have built with families in

the B-CS community,” Parris said. “We worked hard over the past 15 years to do a good job and appreciate that is noted.”

“We are continuing to focus on maintaining the quality facility we have, offering B-CS families educational and developmental services for their children in a safe and nurturing environment,” Parris said. Parris believes staff members are what set the pre-school apart from the competition. “I think our staff is what sets our business apart from the facilities in the area,” she said. “We have a core group of people who have been here several years, providing the children here with consistent and nurturing education and care.” She said Bright Beginnings team members are honored and thankful to receive the award, which they won

“They (Merrill Lynch) offer the best strategies, technology and scope for me and my clients,” Myatt said. “The research is outstanding, so when I make a recommendation, I feel I have the best minds in the financial world backing me up.”

BEST OF ‘17 FINANCIAL PLANNER, STOCKBROKER

W

ade Myatt, CRPC, Senior Financial Advisor with Merrill Lynch Wealth Management in College Station, focuses on relationships with each client, and he believes that helped him win the 2017 Readers’ Choice “Best Financial Planner” and “Best Stockbroker” awards. “I give each and every one the attention they deserve, from the smallest to largest,” said Myatt. “I work incredibly hard to gain and keep their trust over time. There are

many great choices and many great firms and products out there that clients can pick from, so I strive to be there for them at all times.” Myatt recently received his Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor designation, which he feels gives him even more knowledge and tools to guide his clients going forward. Myatt also said Merrill Lynch is a premier wealth management firm, which is why he joined the firm in November 2012. Myatt started in the brokerage business in early 1997.

Myatt helps individuals and their families pursue their financial goals by creating and implementing wealth management strategies for things such as retirement, education, insurance, estate planning and gifting. He also helps companies and employees manage and navigate the many complex retirement plans that are available, and find the best one for their needs. He then helps clients maintain a disciplined investment process so they can achieve their retirement goals. Myatt said his business has

grown steadily over the years, and he has been through some of the toughest market cycles in history, which helps him keep a “calming influence” with clients during uncertain times. “My portfolios have a conservative tilt that try and smooth out the crazy swings along the way,” he said. “We all want to make the big returns, but, frankly, it’s a lot about keeping what you’ve worked so hard to build over time. My job many times is to try and keep clients from getting too emotional in tough times and making bad decisions. Sticking to their plan and staying disciplined is how they achieve the goals they have set for their self.”

This is the seventh time Myatt has won the Readers’ Choice Award, which, he said, is humbling and makes him extremely proud. “I have the greatest clients in the world. We have great relationships, and I so appreciate them taking their time to vote for me,” Myatt stated. Myatt also gives a lot of credit to his Registered Client Associate, Charlee Miller, for taking care of daily administrative duties and making things run smoothly. “I couldn’t do it without her,” Myatt said. “We are a team.”

PATIO/OUTDOOR DINING, HAPPY HOUR

O

zona Grill & Bar, featuring a large patio perfect for kicking back and unwinding and lots of tasty menu items, won the 2017 Readers’ Choice “Best Patio/Outdoor Dining” and “Best Happy Hour” awards. Named after the unincorporated west Texas town, Ozona Grill & Bar first opened in 1992 in Dallas. The College Station restaurant opened in 2004, at 520 Harvey Road in College Station. The owners have several Aggie family members, and knew that Ozona Grill & Bar’s laid-back

patio atmosphere and comfort food would be a great fit for the area. “We’re excited to win the Readers’ Choice Award,” said Brian Morris, Ozona general manager and Class of 2003 Aggie graduate. “We love the College Station community, and it’s nice to know they feel the same way about us.” Ozona is most known for its award-winning chicken fried steak and weekend Bloody Mary Bar, Morris said. The grill and bar offers brunch Saturday and Sunday, and customers love the daily drink specials.

“We have won the Best Patio in the past, but this is the first Happy Hour win,” he noted. “We think Ozona won because patios and happy hours kind of belong together. There’s nothing quite like relaxing on the patio after a long day with a cold drink in your hand. Add in some chips and queso, and you’re set!”

Morris said. He encouraged customers to stay tuned for new items that

will be added to the menu in the fall. To see the menu and daily food and drink specials, visit ozonagrill.com.

The restaurant is one of a kind in Bryan-College Station. “The atmosphere, large patio and diverse menu definitely set us apart,” Morris said. “We offer people a great place to go catch a game, enjoy Happy Hour or kick off Sunday Funday.” Ozona Grill & Bar hasn’t changed much in recent years because it has found what makes customers happy. “We found what works best for us: good food, cold drinks and southern hospitality,”

ews of a cancer diagnosis can be hard to take in, especially when you are trying to explain your next steps to family members and friends. Traveling away from home to seek treatment adds to that burden and can be lonely at times. That’s why CHI St. Joseph Health offers a comprehensive Cancer Center staffed by experienced medical professionals and equipped with innovative technology right here in your community, providing an extra layer of support for you as you maintain a normal life while undergoing treatment. CHI St. Joseph Health Cancer Center was recently recognized again as a breast cancer center of excellence by the American College of Surgeons National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC). Our program was praised for its excellence in clinical trials associated with breast cancer. CHI St. Joseph Health Cancer Center is the only program in the Brazos Valley with an accredited Breast Center. This marks the second time our breast cancer program has gone through the certification process with NAPBC, which represents a consortium of national and professional organizations dedicated to improving the quality of cancer care and monitoring of patients 26 | J u l y 1 6 , 20 1 7

with diseases of the breast. “This center of excellence recognition sets us apart from other cancer centers, because it evaluates our adherence to evidence-based standards and other hallmarks of quality programs, such as ensuring that newly diagnosed patients receive full navigation services and that each discipline on the center’s medical team touches every individual case,” said Misti Chapman, Cancer Center Director. Our Breast Health Navigators follow all newly-diagnosed patients through the process of receiving care through our program, educating them about their treatment options and financial considerations and guiding them through every step of the process, from their initial appointments through to follow-up care. Our physicians, nurses and other cancer specialists are dedicated to caring for patients and their families from diagnosis through treatment and recovery in the best way possible and with a treatment plan that is patient-centric. The Cancer Center also reviews each patient’s case with the multidisciplinary team to gather input from physicians and specialists from a variety of backgrounds and provide the most comprehensive care possible. The accreditation also

certifies that each person on the Cancer Center team is knowledgeable about breast cancer, that we follow evidence-based guidelines and that we connect patients to genetic counselors to speak to them face-to-face about the meaning of their test results, if they meet the criteria for a hereditary screening.

Coupled with the only dedicated in-patient oncology unit and certified oncology nurses in the Brazos Valley, our team is

committed to education, support, compassion and providing access to the most comprehensive care available.

The team earned recognition for its 15 percent clinical trials accrual rate, meaning that 15 percent of our patients qualified for a credible trial and the center was able to place them into the trial. Chapman said our accrual exceeds the average 2 percent rate and indicates our physicians and research team are diligently screening patients for clinical trial eligibility. For more than 20 years, our cancer doctors, many of them trained at some of the nation’s most renowned medical centers, and with a combined total of over 100 years of experience, are identifying and treating breast, prostate, lung, colon and other cancers at CHI St. Joseph Health Cancer Center.

The CHI St. Joseph Health Cancer Center specializes in the most advanced forms of radiation therapy.

CHI St. Joseph is committed to a multidisciplinary team approach made up of medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, surgeons, nurses, therapists, case workers and educators.

f you ask a firefighter why they do what they do, you’ll most likely get a string of similar responses: they want to serve others; they want to make a difference in their community; and they want to be a part of a team that does both. This call to serve others is the very mindset that allows them to run into burning buildings to save complete strangers, and one another, regardless of the danger it might impose on their well-being. Being a firefighter is much more than what you see – there’s endless hours of continued training, both

physical and mental, matched with community outreach and daily station duties. It is an occupation that isn’t all that glamourous and requires putting the safety of others before your own at every call. For our firefighters, it is much more than just a job; it is a way of life and a means to serve the community on a daily basis. And it is a way of living that Assistant Chief Joe Ondrasek has led for 35 plus years. 4,200-square-foot building on Villa Maria Road in Bryan, and continued there until May 1998. They then relocated to 2501 Cavitt Street in Bryan to the old Sears and Roebuck building with 12,500 square feet. Their business started out selling used furniture, and graduated to new furniture and complete office systems, and in 1999 they added office supplies.

Also in 2000, Marlo Wilton, Stan’s wife joined the company as a partner, and now serves as secretary/treasurer. Scott Bishop became the Vice President for Operations. Wilton’s obtained HUB status in September 2002, and it is also a participating dealer for TXMAS contracts.

In 2010, Wilton’s partnered with four other independent dealers to form AHI Enterprises. very town in the world has its favorite local restaurant. It’s hard to put your finger on what exactly makes one restaurant stand out among others as the popular favorite. Sometimes it is a charismatic owner who has a way of bringing people together. Other times it is truly unique menu items or an innovative way to cook common food to make it uncommonly good. BEST OF ‘17 MEXICAN FOOD

local institution since opening in 1978, Casa Rodriguez is the 2017 Readers’

Choice pick for “Best Mexican Food.” Founded by Richard and Beatrice Rodriguez with the blessings and recipes of Paul and Chelo Rodriguez, “Casa Rod” as loyal customers know it, has been winning over lovers of great Mexican food for more than 30 years. Whether they come for a steaming plate of enchiladas, a delicious breakfast taco or a bowl of Casa Rodriguez’s famous chili,

customers can count on the great service this family-owned restaurant prides itself on. “We stress to our employees that our customers’ experience should always and will be one that they won’t ever forget,” said Debbie Montalbano, daughter of Richard and Beatrice Rodriguez. “We make our customers feel as if they’re family.” While Casa Rodriguez, 300 North Bryan Ave. in Bryan, opened in 1978, the true history of the restaurant stretches much further back. The Rodriguez family-cooking legacy dates back to 1898,

when a young man from Zacatecas, Mexico, named Manuel Rodriguez came to Bryan to work the railroads. Manuel took the money he earned on the railroads and opened a Mexican restaurant behind the Ben Knox Saloon, near the railroad depot in Downtown Bryan. He served homemade Mexican stew and other dishes that became very popular with both locals and travelers. Among those dishes was the chili recipe that is still served today at Casa Rodriguez. Many of those recipes were passed down to Paul and Chelo Rodriguez, who passed them down to Richard and Beatrice, who in turn passed them down to Debbie. It is those cherished family recipes that set Casa Rodriguez apart from other restaurants in the area and have sent many a customer running to Downtown

Bryan to get their “Casa Rod fix.” Montalbano says some of their most popular dishes are El Mobley, fried taquitos, fried avocado and, of course, the El Memo Enchiladas. Plus, delicious breakfast items served every day, such as pancakes, Spanish omelets and arroz con leche (rice pudding). “Weekends we have homemade Caldo (soup) until it’s all gone,” he added. In 2012, the restaurant renovated and put in a full bar, so it could serve mimosas, sangria, CasaRitas and Memo Punch. It has also recently added Big Red Margaritas.

Casa Rodriguez has worked hard for its recognition. The staff and management strive daily to provide the best service to their loyal customers. “We’re excited to see four generations of families still dining with us today! It is a humbling feeling that makes our family proud to know that our hard work and team effort finally paid off,” Debbie said. “To all our loyal returning and future customers, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts.” To see Casa Rodriguez’s menu and specials, visit www. casarod.com. Stop by on the first and second Fridays every month to enjoy live entertainment with your meal.

pirited tailgates. Fun-filled backyard barbecues. Festive dinner parties. People in College Station have plenty of opportunities to enjoy refreshing beverages and gourmet foods. And when they do, they turn to Spec’s Wines, Spirits and Finer Foods, the 2017 Readers’ Choice for “Best Liquor Store.” Since 1962, family-owned Spec’s has been providing exceptional savings on an impressive selection of unique finds for hungry and thirsty Texans. A vital part of their long-running success has been their mission to make and keep

customers happy. Back on April 1, 1962, Carroll Jackson — affectionately nicknamed “Spec” because of his signature eyeglasses — opened the first Spec’s with his wife, Carolynn, in Houston. One day, Spec sketched a caricature of a bunny with glasses, symbolizing his quick, friendly service. People loved it, and it has been the Spec’s logo ever since. In less than 10 years, the demand for more Spec’s locations grew. The Jacksons’ daughter Lindy and her husband John Rydman came on board in 1971, and just three

years later, they introduced the largest selection of wines Houston had ever seen. Now with Texas’ largest selection of wines, spirits and beers at more than 100 locations across the state, Spec’s has truly become a destination shopping experience and a Texas institution. “We serve thousands of people in our stores across Texas,” said Lisa, thirdgeneration spokesperson. “We are constantly striving to get better at what we do, offer a better selection for our customers, improve our customer service and show the public what has been lost in so much of the retail world.” So whether you’re a first-time customer or a long-time fan, make sure you shop at Spec’s for an impressive selection of unique products at incredibly low prices and a big helping of hospitality. BEST OF ‘17 HAMBURGERS, FRENCH FRIES

K

oppe Bridge Bar & Grill was voted for the “Best Hamburgers” and “Best French Fries” in the 2017 Readers’ Choice competition, recognizing the business for 25 years of feeding the best juicy burgers and tasty fries to hungry Aggies, visitors and of course, loyal locals. Koppe Bridge Bar & Grill has two College Station locations -- 11777 Wellborn Road and 3940 Harvey Road, owned by Delph Ross and his wife Glenda Ross.

KOPPE BRIDGE BAR & GRILL

Koppe Bridge started as a local spot out in the county on

Wellborn Road with the vision of serving a few burgers and some really cold beer. After 10 years, the second location on Harvey Road was added. The restaurant also expanded to include a menu with enough variety to satisfy any hungry appetite. Glenda believes Koppe Bridge won the awards because of fresh, quality food. “Our goal is to serve the freshest product possible and to provide our customers with a dining experience that is unique to Aggieland,” she said. “Our meat is ground to our specifications by a local meat

Jason Goodman, senior vice president/COO, believes Aggieland Credit Union won the award because of its daily efforts to take care of its members. “The community recognizes the daily effort of our staff to be their financial partner,” Goodman said. “Winning the award the last seven years is reflective of our commitment to the community and their confidence in us.”

“Our credit union is built upon the foundation of people helping people and our memberowners have experienced the relationship-driven focus of our staff,” he said. “We pride ourselves on building a partnership that can last a lifetime for those just starting out, to those preparing for retirement. Over the years the business has grown along with the community to serve all of Aggieland. The credit union recently opened a fourth location in south College Station, making it the 19th location for the credit union. “Our credit union, much like our industry as a whole, has changed and adapted in the services and products that we provide to meet the needs of our members,” Goodman said. “With any new service or product, and

Readfield Meats & Deli is a family owned and operated business that was begun in 1960 by the parents of the current owners, Richard, Larry and Roland Ruffino. Readfield’s meat market carries a full line of fresh meat products, including aged, USDA Choice and Prime Chairman Reserve Premium Beef, Mid-West Pork and Texas Poultry. Other meat products include lamb and veal. Readfield Meats & Deli is also known for its own award-winning smoked meat products, including sausages, turkeys, beef jerky, bacon

he Eagle readers voted Dr. Mark Brauer as the 2017 Readers’ Choice “Best Anesthesiologist” winner, and Brauer credits his team members for the win. Brauer, corporate medical director at American Anesthesiology of Texas, said staff members at the medical practice set it apart from the competition. “Easy – it’s our people that set us apart. Simply put, we have the most compassionate, most skilled and most dedicated professionals I’ve ever had the privilege to work

with,” he said. “This is my second year in a row to be chosen ‘Best Anesthesiologist,’ and I just think it’s a testament to the wonderful anesthesia team we have put together that has positively impacted so many people. It truly is our team of professionals that makes us successful, and I play just a small part.” American Anesthesiology of Texas provides comprehensive anesthesia services at CHI St. Joseph Hospital, College Station Medical Center, The Physicians Centre and several freestanding and office-based surgical centers throughout the

Bryan-College Station area, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. “Whenever you need us, we will be there,” Brauer said. Originally formed as Brazos Anesthesiology Associates in July 1985, the business was the first anesthesia practice in Bryan-College Station, he said. Since then, the business has grown significantly. “From our original roots of a few anesthesiologists and a handful of CRNAs, we have grown to a present practice of 18 amazing anesthesiologists, 28 amazing nurse anesthetists and our equally amazing office staff and pain nurses,” Brauer said. The business is always looking for new needs and opportunities to serve the area, he noted.

willingness to expand our anesthesia services wherever and whenever we are needed,” Brauer said. “This community is our home, too, and we want to be there to carry its members safely through their anesthetic experience – every minute of every hour, of every day.” Brauer said he is honored by the award.

“I am “Throughout the past 32 years, American Anesthesiology honored and has always shown the

BEST OF ‘17 AUDIOLOGIST

R

obert Herring, Au.D. and the staff of Listen Hear Audiology Center ar e grateful for the continued support from our wonderful community. Listen Hear Audiology Center was founded on providing the highest level of hearing health care in

Bryan and College Station, and being voted as “Best Audiologist” is a true honor. Founded in 2009 by Dr. Herring, Listen Hear Audiology Center has grown and has cared for over 4,000 people during that time. Many local physicians and caregivers regularly

refer their patients for hearing care because they trust the services provided by Dr. Herring and his staff.

• Custom hearing protection including electronic noise plugs for hunters and marksmen

Listen Hear Audiology Center provides a number of services including:

• Swim plugs

• Comprehensive hearing testing • Hearing aid evaluation and fitting with multiple brands and lines from which to choose • Hearing aid repair and maintenance • Pediatric and adult care • Newborn hearing screening

• Tinnitus consultations Dr. Herring has invested significantly in new equipment over the past year, including a new state-of-the-art Real Ear Measurement (REM) system. REM, also called probe microphone measurement, is an advanced way to measure the output and function of hearing aids while in the patient’s ears. A tiny microphone is placed a few millimeters from the eardrum, and testing is performed with and without the hearing aid.

The hearing aids are then adjusted to meet very specific prescriptive targets for the individual’s hearing loss. Because we all have differently shaped ears and ear canals, REM gives much better objective measurements for a precise hearing aid fitting. No guessing, just science. REM is what the American Academy of Audiology and the American Speech, Language and Hearing Association recommends as best practices. That is the difference in Listen Hear Audiology Center’s approach to helping people hear better. Dr. Herring is accepting new patients, and is only a phone call away to beginning the journey to better hearing.

r. Jesse Parr, voted “Best Pediatrician” in the 2017 Readers’ Choice Awards, strives to provide quality care for children and to keep up with the ever-changing needs of local families. University Pediatrics Association’s goal is to provide quality comprehensive care to local young people and their families. “Service is our product, and we have tried to treat everyone as we would want to be treated -- that is to follow ‘the golden rule,’” Parr said. “We strive to use the talents God has given

us in His service.” In 1976 Parr moved to the area to join a multi-specialty group in Bryan. He was the only pediatrician and the only one caring for sick newborns, so he was “on call” 24/7, often taking him away from his own children. He later met Navasota pediatrician, Dr. Bill Conkling, who had been in practice 20 years, and his new associate, Dr. Ken Matthews. The three decided to form a pediatric group, mostly to provide coverage for their time off needs, but it was at a time when the area was beginning to grow with increasing enrollment

at Texas A&M University. In 1978 the three withdrew from their respective groups, and formed University Pediatrics Association, which has grown to six pediatricians. Parr believes innovation and trying to meet the constantly changing needs of families set the business apart from competition. “We innovated regular weekend hours for sick kids, and our latest innovation is fullservice evening hours for both sick and well young people,” he said. “I personally have tried to expand my knowledge in the treatment of ADHD and other mental health problems so that children and their families can expect to receive the best quality care available anywhere.” Despite changes over the years, the University Pediatrics Association’s focus remains the same.

“One thing that has not changed is that we are independently owned and not affiliated with any hospital or hospital system and our primary allegiance is to our patients and their families,” Parr said.

Why?

Just because we offend some people doesn’t make it right to remove God’s great name. Our money clearly states, “In God We Trust.” There are many other places one can live if they don’t want to hear of our beliefs. Why change our beliefs for others? Is God not greater than any other person? So, why change for the sake of others? Where did our faith go?

BEST OF ‘17 FURNITURE STORE

A

nzualda’s Furniture & More, the 2017 Readers’ Choice “Best Furniture Store” winner, features quality, unique furniture pieces and personalized customer service. The store, owned by Israel Isaiah Anzualda and Yvette Barrera Anzualda, sells from modern to elegant furniture, specializing in dining room, bedroom and living room pieces, along with mattresses. It has a variety of package deals where customers can buy an entire living room, dining room and bedroom set for one low price – popular with customers because they are able to choose an affordable package that fits

their budget. “We believe we won because of our customer satisfaction, quality in furniture and pricing,” the Anzualdas said. “We offer furniture that many places in the area do not carry. Our elegant pieces are unique and very affordable. We also believe we won because of our story. Our customers can relate to us because we are a small, locally-owned business that started from the bottom and came from nothing. Every day is a new adventure. We never know who will walk through our doors and whose life we may be impacting.” The store came about because the owners used to

restore furniture and started selling pieces at the local flea market and online. They were successful and saw potential in furniture, so they used their savings to invest in new furniture. They opened Anzualda’s Furniture & More in February 2016. Since then, the store has added financing through four companies that work with customers’ different credit situations. It has also expanded the types of furniture it carries, with more modern and contemporary pieces. The couple believes a connection with customers is what sets the business apart from competitors.

all of our customers and strive to ensure they have a positive experience and a store they can come back to.” The Anzualdas felt blessed to win the award. “We feel incredibly blessed to have won this award, especially after being in business for less than two years,” they said. “We never thought this would happen to us, and we are very grateful for the support we have received. We would also like to thank all of our past and current

employees for their hard work. This journey has not been easy, and there were many times when we wanted to give up because of other people’s opinions.
