A heart attack is a frightening moment, not only for the person having it, but for that person’s family, as well. A good cardiologist is able to both treat the patient and help put the family at ease at the same time. With his attention to both the technical and emotional aspects of his practice, Dr. Kennon Wigley of the Central Texas Heart Center was named the 2013 Readers’ Choice “Best Cardiologist” winner. Dr. Wigley came to the Bryan/College Station area in 1989, and has been with the Central Texas Heart Center for 24 years, where he is a part of a talented team of doctors. Being surrounded by quality doctors is something Dr. Wigley values dearly in his work. “The delivery of good medical care truly requires a team,” Wigley said. “I believe the quality of medical care in the Brazos Valley is high.

profession is a God-given gift and a sacred trust,” Wigley said. “I believe all healing comes from the Lord. If we keep these principles in mind, the rest of the practice will take care of itself. Dr. Wigley embodies a team-first mentality and is quick to point out that while his is the name on the award, being named the 2013 Readers’ Choice for best cardiologist was a group effort. “I am thankful to have been selected for this honor, but I really believe this award is a testament to the entire staff who support our practice,” Wigley said, “including the front office personnel, nurses, medical assistants, imaging specialists and administrative staff who serve our patients and enrich their experience in our office and in the hospital.”

you to all our customers who voted for us for their support and giving us a vote of confidence,” Wilks said. “This store is locally owned and operated. We live here and we spend our money locally, so it’s great to have the community respond back to us like this.”

This innovative “look” combined with quality customer service is what has made Ashley Furniture HomeStore so popular with the community. Store owner Mark Wilks said the company takes great pride in how his employees interact with shoppers. He stresses to them that great customer service is the first priority, with the furniture itself being the second. “The communication we have with customers is what sets us apart,” Wilks said. “We do follow-up calls with customers after a sell, and when we do something wrong, we make sure that we go back and make it right the second time. People like to be taken care of, so we’re always trying to do a great job of that. He also adds, “We are always answering any and every question a customer has, so we

When shopping for furniture, most people are looking for three things: quality, price and customer service. Striking the right balance of all three can separate a store from the competition, and that is exactly why Ashley Furniture HomeStore is the 2013 Readers’ Choice for “Best Furniture Store.” Shoppers to the Ashley Furniture HomeStore on Highway 6 in College Station are able to browse the best that Ashley has to offer in an atmosphere designed to highlight and accent the furniture and mattresses themselves. The signature Ashley waterfall greets customers as they walk in, and the showroom is sectioned off to create individual showpiece room setups, complete with wall decor and furniture accessories. This presentation method not only shows off the furniture, but gives buyers a preview of how the pieces work together in a room setting. The newly designed showroom allows customers to walk freely

do things the way they want it done to their liking!” The Wilks family owns three Ashley Furniture HomeStore locations. They opened their first one in Lufkin in 2005. The College Station store opened in 2007, with a store in Waco opening shortly thereafter. Each store has won awards in its community for service and quality. Wilks said each award serves as proof that their customer service philosophy works. At the end of the day, you can buy a sofa anywhere, Wilks said. What it comes down to is who are you comfortable buying it from? Who is going to give you the best value? Who is going to give the best service after the sale? Everyone is going to say they have the best service, but until you prove it, it doesn’t mean anything. Wilks said he is proud that his store has earned the community’s business and trust. Shrimp, Smoked Salmon, Chicken & Waffles and Buppy’s popular chicken tenders -just to mention a few. Buppy’s always serves a full breakfast, lots of sides, salads, desserts and drinks. Plus, the restaurant features made-to-order stations, including pasta, waffles, pancakes, omelets, breakfast tacos, or eggs any way you want them. The business is owned by Buppy Simank and his wife, Jennifer Simank. Buppy has been in the business of feeding people since 1984. The secret of his success is listening to his customers’ wants and needs and, of course, great food. “We are extremely excited to win the ‘Best Buffet’ this year,” Buppy said. “This is our first time to win two separate categories. It is humbling that a small-town boy such as myself can beat out the chain restaurants. We started the brunch to have a place for our customers to gather with their families on Sunday. These may be a few of the reasons Witt’s End was voted the “Best Boutique” for Bryan-College Station in The Eagle Readers’ Choice awards. Karen Witt-Kasper, owner of Witt’s End, said she is honored and excited to receive this award and wants to thank her wonderful clients for their vote

of confidence. We’re a place where women retreat, a place where friends are made, and a place where style isn’t a matter of cookiecutter fashion. More importantly, Dr. Reece understood that for most of these patients, there comes a breaking point, whether in the form of being passed over for promotion, a threatened divorce, or simply the pain and dysfunction has become too much to live with anymore. If you have decided that “It’s my time,” then you’ll join the many hundreds of patients that have gone before you by picking up the phone and making an appointment with Dr. Reece. And like those patients, you’ll be glad you did.

Several years ago, Dr. Michael Reece noticed that a significant portion of our society was putting off dental care. It’s not that they were procrastinating in all areas of their life; they just were focusing on everything but their dental health. In subsequent interviews with these patients, Dr. Reece and his team discovered that the reasons were as prolific as the range of patients. Some indicated they were afraid of going to the dentist. A trepidation usually based on a less-than-ideal childhood experience. Others found themselves in the downward spiral of events usually starting with a neglected annual cleaning that led to a cavity that led to an infection, and so on until they had an entire mouth of missing and / or bad teeth. As these assorted dental problems escalated over the years, a host of new problems, both dental and psychological, developed in tandem. Teeth that had turned visibly bad soon became a

to the realization they could no longer put things off, and it was time to take care of the problem. They found themselves saying “It’s my time.” That decision is all it takes for patients to begin the journey to a new, healthy smile that relieves their pain, social anxieties about smiling and showing their teeth, buoys their confidence and brings a renewed sense of optimism and hope. Dr. Reece accomplishes these makeovers using many individual techniques he has developed and perfected over the years and brought together in a complimentary pallet of advanced dental tools. Patients love the results. Food choices open up for them again. Smiling openly and freely without hesitation leads them to renewed friendships and increased social confidence. Relationships reignite, and overall health rises. Many are surprised at how something as seemingly simple as teeth can have such far-reaching effects on the quality of their life. The dedication to the advanced training to be able to provide for complicated and multi-faceted dental cases has been a life-long professional pursuit for Dr. Reece. In fact, he is one of only two in Texas and 19 in the entire world to achieve the designation Master Dentist from the prestigious Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies

Best General Surgeon

2013

Trust is a key part of any professional practice, but maybe none more than in the surgical field. Having a surgeon you can trust helps not just the patient, but the patient’s family and friends, as well. Forging trusting relationships with his patients has helped Dr. Hank Bohne win the 2013 Readers’ Choice Award for “Best General Surgeon.” This is the sixth year in a row that Dr. Bohne has won, something that surprised him. “This is very humbling because I don’t think that I do anything different than any of the other surgeons,” Dr. Bohne said. “There are guys who are probably technically much better than I am, or maybe perform a wider range of procedures. If anything, I credit the ladies here in my office. We try to go overboard to treat people well, see them on time and to go the extra mile to help them with other specialists - and the ladies make that happen.” Dr. Bohne and his staff strive to always make sure the patient comes first in everything they do. He never wants a patient to regret choosing him and makes sure they know that everything he and his staff do is done with their individual needs in mind. “We have a long history of concerned, compassionate caring for our patients,” Dr. Bohne said. “Although our community has grown and changed over the years, we strive to be stable, traditional and always put the patient first. A patient should always know that our highest priority is to meet his or her individual needs in every aspect of care.” Dr. Bohne, Aggie Class of ‘72, set up practice in Bryan/College Station in 1981 where he started earning his reputation as a quality, caring surgeon. He said he knew he wanted to come back to Aggieland after finishing medical school. “I was born and grew up in this part of the state,” Dr. Bohne said. “The community reflects the values that I believe in.” Dr. Bohne said one of the biggest challenges in general surgery is having to make on-the-spot decisions in life or death circumstances. The challenge of having to make those choices and being able to completely change the course of treatment makes the job challenging, but also very rewarding. But things do not always turn out well in surgery, and Dr. Bohne knows that how he responds to those situations makes every bit as much a difference to his reputation as when everything goes as planned. “We are often in situations where what we do may save a patient’s life in an acute situation,” Dr. Bohne said.

“When we are successful, there is no better feeling. Unfortunately, we also get into situations where the outcomes are bad. These experiences help us empathize with patients and their families in their vulnerable times.” Through good times and bad, Dr. Bohne has repeatedly shown that he is there for his patients. Receiving recognition from the community through the Readers’ Choice Award is something Dr. Bohne takes to heart. “Thank you all for your trust,” Dr. Bohne said. “I am humbled by your choice and will continue to do the best I can to provide for your needs.”

Best Obstetrician/ Gynecologist

2013

A native of Bryan/College Station, Dr. L. Justin Gayle returned to his hometown to practice Obstetrics and Gynecology in 1999. “It was always a dream of mine to return home to practice medicine,” said Dr. Gayle. After 12 years of practicing medicine in a multi-doctor practice Gayle noted that he was ready for a change, so he started his own practice and group. College Station Advanced Ob/Gyn opened in 2011, located at 1602 Rock Prairie Road, Suite 3500. It’s a private practice that focuses on individualized care in a peaceful setting. The clinic offers state-of-the-art obstetric and gynecologic services, including comprehensive, high-risk OB care and advanced gynecological surgery, such as Laparoscopy, Robotic Surgery and Pelvic Reconstructive Surgery. It also provides state-of-theart ultrasound including 3D/4D and Doppler flow. “I wanted to offer my patients a more individualized experience, in a faith-based practice,” Gayle said. “Generally as practices grow and become larger, the focus on the individual patient and their needs become less of a priority in the BryanCollege Station area. We are blessed with many outstanding physicians locally. Patients have a choice of what type of experience they want; our experience is unique in that we have a quiet, peaceful setting with state-of-the-art equipment. Although Advanced Ob/Gyn is a group, we each have our own individual office. The patients tell us that they like the smaller, more tranquil setting. When they call our office or come in they are dealing with our own individual staff. Our staff gets to know our patients and can better address their personal needs.” He also wanted to be able to choose how to run his practice, when he could see patients and how late the clinic could be open. Dr. Gayle’s office is attached to College Station Medical Center, which makes him immediately available to his patients in Labor and Delivery, Surgery and Post Partum units. Dr. Gayle said he is honored to receive the Readers’ Choice “Best Obstetrician & Gynecologist” award, which he also won in 2011. “Winning any achievement award is humbling to me and a tremendous honor. This award is a reflection of not only me, but also of my dedicated staff and patients. It is an award that says patients think we are doing a great job and they appreciate that effort. This is a team award for Advanced Ob/Gyn and all our staff,” Dr. Gayle said. “We would like to thank our devoted patients for

selecting us for this honor and for allowing us to participate in their healthcare needs.” Dr. Gayle said his plans for the future include continuing to offer the newest technologies and services with his primary focus being on individualized care in a privatepractice setting. “In combination with CSMC, we plan on offering our patients in the Brazos Valley and surrounding area the very best in women’s and children’s services.” For more information on College Station Advanced Ob/Gyn, visit www.csadvancedobgyn.com, or call 979-693-1064.

His remarkable response to this life-changing event paved the way for him to change our lives as well. Today, he continues to be the same kind of inspiration to everyone that knows him. When Hospice Brazos Valley started in 1989, it treated 34 patients. Last year, the organization treated more than 1,000 patients annually for the first time. Another first for the organization in 2012 was the opening of a new inpatient facility, at 1600 Joseph Drive in Bryan, allowing the nonprofit organization to treat patients with acute symptoms in its own facility. Hospice Brazos Valley’s dedication to providing a better quality of life for people with life-limiting illness is evident. This year was the fifth time the organization won the Readers’ Choice “Best Non-profit Agency” award. The non-profit organization began caring for patients in 1989. “It was born out of a concern that there were no hospice services in BryanCollege Station,” said Craig Borchardt, Hospice Brazos Valley President and CEO. Hospice Brazos Valley provides care for patients who have a prognosis of living six months or less and choose not to seek curative treatment. The organization specializes in palliative care, treating disease-related symptoms primarily in the homes of patients. Care is holistic, focusing on the body, mind and spirit, and is directed by the patient and physician.

Its long tenure has allowed it to build strong relationships with its health-care partners. Borchardt felt honored by the award. “It’s a great honor, and it’s not only an affirmation of the great care we provide, but honors the relationships we have with our health care partners who assist us with our care,” he said. “We accept it on behalf of our patients, staff and everyone who supports our care.”

Best Anesthesiologist

2013

You have a choice. Many patients are completely unaware that they have a choice in selecting their anesthesiologist. This primarily comes from a misunderstanding that the anesthesiologist is “assigned” to your case or is included “automatically” with the surgery team. While this may be the perception, it is not a fact. The trend across the U.S. is for more and more patients to put as much thought and effort into choosing their anesthesiologist as they put into picking the surgeon performing their procedure. There is good precedence for this effort considering the anesthesiologist’s important role in producing good surgical outcomes. Today, it is not uncommon once a patient has found an anesthesiologist that they are comfortable with, to stick with them throughout

the many different types of surgeries they may have over the course of several years. The reason for this shift is simple; the patient’s anesthesiologist of choice is the one consistent physician from one procedure to the next. Since each surgery or procedure usually requires a different primary surgeon caring for the patient for the first time, patients find it greatly reassuring that their anesthesiologist knows their particular physiology, has a history with them, and will care for them in the operating room. J.B. Dott, with BCS Physicians Anesthesia Services, has been a leader in providing this type of individualized approach to anesthesia care since 1983 in Bryan/College Station. For the past 30 years, many patients have come to consider him a permanent member of their healthcare team, along with their primary care physician.

Besides an easygoing manner, Dr. Dott is known for taking the time to do presurgery consultations and post-surgery follow-ups with all of his patients and provides only physician-administered anesthesia. It is this depth of caring and confidence of knowing that Dr. Dott is there for them that has made many fans of Dr. Dott’s style of personalized medicine. And in a reversal of traditional roles of years past, patients are just as likely to call Dr. Dott about his recommendations for surgeons for needed procedures as they are to ask their primary care physician. For elective procedures, informed patients have even been known to book Dr. Dott far in advance to guarantee his availability before scheduling their surgery. Competent, personalized, one-to-one, accessible health care has become Dr. Dott’s hallmark. Healthy, grateful patients have been his reward. Congratulations to Dr. Dott for his seventh win of The Eagle Readers’ Choice Award. Dr. Dott can be reached at 693-7167.

Despite all the growth and new facilities, however, one thing has remained the same over the past 119 years — our commitment to providing quality, Catholic education. That commitment has helped St. Joseph Catholic School establish a solid reputation for excellence in education. But that reputation is something that we do not take for granted. In all that we do, from teaching the very youngest students to read, to guiding high school students through

Best Physical Therapist

2013

Leon Bradway at the Sports, Back & Pain Management Clinic was voted the 2013 “Best Physical Therapist” for the fourth time. Upon receiving the news, Leon said, “It’s hard to convey in print, the depth of my appreciation to my patients who have selected us for this honor.” He went on to say, “This is fantastic recognition for all of the staff. I couldn’t do what I do without such dedicated and caring staff. Each and every member of the team goes above and beyond to ensure our patients are 100 percent better when they leave us.” When asked why he thinks he won the award, Leon said, “I believe we won the award because our patients trust us, they believe we will help them and they know what we do will make a significant difference in their lives.” He added, “They also want natural solutions to their medical problems, and we provide those solutions. “ Sport, Back & Pain Management Clinic, 2011 E. Villa Maria Road, is a physical therapy clinic specializing in eliminating pain,

preventing and treating sports injuries and women’s issues. Specifically, we help people who have: pain, dizziness or balance problems, injuries from an accident, headaches/TMJ, pelvic pain, incontinence and movement. We also help athletes young and old prevent injuries and increase sports performance. “Contrary to what many believe, physical therapy isn’t just massage, hot packs and ultrasound. These passive modalities are used, but to a much lesser extent in my clinic. We do so much more to ensure our patients achieve their goals, and we use the most effective, natural treatments available,” Leon said. In fact, Leon introduced Trigger Point Dry Needling to the Brazos Valley. He has been using this technique for over 10 years and has worked with experts both domestically and internationally. While this procedure is well known in Europe and Canada, it is relatively new in the U.S. The treatment is extremely effective in treating pain and promotes faster

healing. Leon said, “I continuously evaluate natural and safe treatment methods so I can make them available to my patients”. Leon also performs Nerve Conduction Studies and Electromyography tests, has a Masters in Orthopedic Physical Therapy, a Doctorate in Physical Therapy and over 25 years of experience treating a wide variety of patients, from adolescents to wounded warriors to retirees. All of this means he is accurate in identifying the underlying cause of the patient’s problem and in developing and applying treatments that work. When asked if he had any final comment, he said, “We are grateful to our patients and doctors who put a great deal of trust in us. I love what I do, so I’m passionate about letting people know how much I can do to help them.” Leon goes on to explain that the human body has over 600 muscles, and he is a muscle specialist. “When your muscles aren’t functioning properly, it can lead to pain, restriction, balance and other problems (i.e., incontinence).” He said most people think of physical therapy only after an accident or surgery, but an experienced and skilled therapist can do so much more to improve a person’s health and quality of life. He encourages readers to look at the patient testimonials on their

He said their office also distributes a monthly newsletter to past and present patients, but anyone who is interested can get on the email mailing list (by calling their office) or pick up a copy. The newsletter contains articles on different ailments and how he can help, healthy recipes, information about changes in insurance rules and regulations, give-aways, and upcoming events. He added, “Everyone who comes to the clinic knows that each and every member of the staff wants to see them succeed. We view ourselves as their lifelong partners

and stress the importance of taking responsibility for their own health and overall wellness.” We encourage questions and want to hear from our patients. Leon said, “I have to know my patient and what they are going through to understand how to help them get better. The side benefit is that I get to know a lot of very interesting people.” Since opening in 2009, the clinic has sponsored free community wellness events to encourage healthy eating and physical activity. Leon said, “Our motto says it all: Bodies in motion equal lifelong health.”

Best Sports Bar

2013

Boston’s Restaurant & Sports Bar provides something for everyone –with a wide variety on its menu, a family dining area and a sports bar. Perhaps that’s why The Eagle readers voted it the 2013 Readers’ Choice “Best Sports Bar” winner. Boston’s Restaurant & Sports Bar, 820 University Drive in College Station, opened in 2006, and is corporate owned. The first Boston’s opened in Edmonton, Alberta, in 1964. The company started franchising in 1968, and has since evolved from a pizza joint into a full-service, casual dining restaurant and sports bar. Boston’s continues its rapid growth today, with over 50 locations across the United States and Mexico and numerous restaurants in development over the next several years. Boston’s is not like other restaurants, and has many unique traits that set it apart from other dining venues, Boston’s spokespersons said. “It’s all about the food, the people and the heritage,’ Boston’s website states. Boston’s is a full-service, pizza-themed, casual dining restaurant and sports bar, offering incredible gourmet pizzas and gourmet pasta, along with a wide variety of other great dishes, such as wings, ribs, burgers, entrée size salads, sandwiches and the most delicious and fresh

kids menu in the casual dining category. Boston’s offers a contemporary, sit-down family dining atmosphere with a sports bar customized with local team memorabilia. The result is a fun, high-energy setting for families and sports enthusiasts alike.” Boston’s takes pride in making great food and drinks,

and that’s why the cooks make pizza dough from scratch every day, and top it with freshest of ingredients, according to Boston’s. Pasta and entrée sauces are prepared in-house to ensure premium quality something guests can taste. “Being at Boston’s is like being at the home of a great friend, enjoying a good meal and your favorite beverage,” the website adds. Boston’s won the “Best Sports Bar” award because of the establishment’s guests, said Tammy Waters, field marketing manager. “Boston’s is a place for everyone, and we enjoy serving the community,” she said.

Boston’s Gourmet Pizza 820 University Drive East, College Station 979-260-8646 | www.bostons.com “We take pride in ensuring our guests’ happiness and loyalty.” Boston’s staff members are pleased to receive the award, Waters said, adding that the award means the establishment’s customers are happy. “We are more than excited to be chosen as this year’s winner,” she said. “We have a great staff, but it’s the guests who make the business what it is. Boston’s caters to

everyone’s needs with family dining, the bar loaded with a big screen TV, patio seating and lots of fun.” Boston’s has recently expanded its business hours and delivery and catering services. Boston’s is open from 11 a.m. to midnight, Sundays through Wednesdays, and 11 a.m. to 2 a.m., Thursdays through Saturdays. It delivers until midnight every night in Bryan-College Station.

Best Urgent Care/ Emergency Facility

2013

Urgent care waiting rooms can be agonizing when you have an illness or injury, and emergency rooms are even worse. And if you or your little one is not feeling well, waiting can seem like an eternity. St. Joseph offers a way to avoid those crowded waiting areas and still receive the care you need with a check-in service called InQuicker. With InQuicker, patients can check in online to reduce waiting times in the emergency room and urgent care center, and even book doctor appointments instantly. To use InQuicker at St. Joseph, visit www.stjoer. org. Find a facility near your home or work and choose when and where you want to go. Then relax at home until your chosen appointment time. You can also download SJNow from iTunes to find InQuicker locations in the Brazos Valley. Whatever your needs are, St. Joseph has you covered. St. Joseph Express Cares are

staffed with board-certified physicians. Express is your answer when illness suddenly comes knocking. Our locations are open extended hours on weekdays and weekends and every holiday. At St. Joseph Regional Health Center, the trauma program in the emergency department has a Level II trauma designation. This achievement recognizes St. Joseph’s dedication to providing optimal care for patients suffering from all types of injuries, including those that are life threatening. Trauma centers handle the most severe, life-threatening, blunt force and penetrating injuries that require operations and other interventions by multiple specialists. Only one in 10 U.S. hospitals is a major trauma center. That means 45 million Americans don’t have access to a Level I or Level II trauma center within an hour of being injured. In 2007 and 2010, St. Joseph

was encouraged by state surveyors to seek Level II Trauma designation because we already met many of the Level II criteria and capabilities. As we moved toward our Level II designation, more physicians with specific trauma surgery www.st-joseph.org | www.stjoer.org expertise were recruited, including Dr. Adair de Berry- care, hospital nursing units and Cares were voted the Readers’ Carlisle, a board-certified rehabilitation. “What’s the secret of our success?” asks Dr. Keith Paull of The Paull Allergy and Asthma Clinic. “In a time where most doctors are spending less and less time with their patients, it’s still normal practice in our office to spend 45 minutes talking with new patients.” Dr. Paull believes that taking a thorough history is important to understanding patients and their diseases, and that talking with each patient after the evaluation to explain the treatments in a way that makes sense is even more critical. Trained at National Jewish Health, the #1 ranked respiratory hospital in America and Board Certified in Allergy and Immunology, Dr. Paull treats patients of all ages, from infants with food allergies to older adults with medication reactions. He also takes care of a variety of other allergic and immune problems, including itchy skin rashes, asthma, chronic cough and sinus problems. Dr Paull, who grew up in the Brazos Valley and graduated from

Texas A&M University (Aggie Class of ‘94) says, “I want to say thank you to everyone who voted for the Paull Allergy and Asthma Clinic. It’s been an honor to serve the community I grew up in for the last 10 years.” Acknowledging that this award is a team effort, he says, “I couldn’t have done it alone. I am very fortunate to have a wonderful staff dedicated to patient care.” Practice administrator, Ms. Diana Northup has embraced the The Paull Allergy Clinic philosophy that quality care is about treating patients, not diseases. She says that she’s worked hard to cultivate a staff of friendly, skilled, helpful patient advocates. With easy access from both Bryan and College Station, The Paull Allergy Clinic is located at the Physician Center, just three miles down University Drive from Texas A&M University. Dr. Paull also sees patients in Brenham and Huntsville one day per week and has evening office hours in Bryan on Wednesdays to make it as convenient as possible for

patients to find a location and an appointment time that fits into their schedules. “We know that a visit to the allergist can be a little intimidating, so we have tried our best to make the office environment comfortable and child friendly,” remarks Dr. Paull. “We provide free Internet access to help businessmen and women stay productive, a children’s area for our younger children and their parents, an Xbox game system for our teens, and “shots

Best Audiologist and Best Hearing Aid Center

2013

Listen Hear Audiology Center provides individualized care to each patient, and Robert Herring, Au.D. said that is likely what helped him and the clinic get the “Best Audiologist” and “Best Hearing Aid Center” Readers’ Choice awards. Listen Hear Audiology Center, 3030 E. 29th St. in Bryan, is the only private audiology practice in Bryan and College Station. Dr. Herring opened Listen Hear Audiology in 2009 to provide a clinic focused only on better hearing. The clinic provides comprehensive audiology and hearing aid services. Listen Hear Audiology Center has recently opened an office in Huntsville, as well. There are several choices in the community for hearing aids, but Listen Hear Audiology Center’s commitment to service is what sets it apart from the competition, Herring said,

and that’s why readers likely voted it “Best Audiologist” and “Best Hearing Aid Center.” He said properly fitting hearing aids and assistive devices is a “complicated and unique process” that involves different strategies for every individual. “We provide individualized care to each patient, as everyone has a specific problem and specific need,” he said. He said he felt flattered to win the award, and thanked his customers for voting for Listen Hear Audiology Center. Dr. Herring has a doctorate of audiology from The University of Florida, and maintains his audiology license through annual continuing education. He said that allows him to stay current in his field, and benefits each person that is seen in his clinic because they can be assured they are getting the most upto-date services and products as possible. He is also board certified by the American

Board of Audiology. He is required to obtain additional, more rigorous continuing education. Listen Hear Audiology Center carries several different brands of hearing devices to better fit each patient’s needs, including ReSound, Oticon, Starkey, Siemens and more. Hearing aids are not “one-sizefits-all,” and it is important to match features with the patient’s hearing loss, lifestyle and budget. The hearing aid is only part of the rehabilitation process, however. “The services of fitting, programming and maintaining the devices are the most challenging aspect of helping someone hear their best,” Herring said. “Anyone can get a license to sell hearing aids, but it takes proper training and skill to provide a level of exceptional service so that a successful outcome can occur.” Herring said what inspires him to better his business is “seeing happy faces, seeing a child hear for the first time and improving relationships with better hearing.”

Best Museum

2013

The George Bush Presidential Library and Museum in College Station has several regular exhibits, annual events and educational programs, and visitors have selected it as this year’s Readers’ Choice “Best Museum” winner. The George Bush Presidential Library and Museum, 1000 George Bush Drive West, has a mission to preserve and make available the records and artifacts of George H.W. Bush, who served as the 41st United States president. The museum promotes literacy, an increased understanding of U.S. history and public service and volunteerism, said Will King, the museum’s marketing and communication director. The George Bush Presidential Library and Museum opened in November 1997, with the research room opening the following year. It is part of the National Archives and Records Administration’s Presidential Libraries network. “We’re honored to again be

selected as a Readers’ Choice winner, and thank everyone who voted for us,” King said. King said he believes the Bush Library and Museum has won the Readers’ Choice award several times because it provides “quality, informational and familyfriendly educational programs, annual events and exhibits that are fun for all ages.” “The Bush Library and Museum is an incredible resource and source of pride for the greater Brazos Valley community, a role that we take pride in every day and work to build upon,” King said. King said what inspires museum employees to run a successful business is that they are committed to being a positive community partner by providing the best possible museum experience, educational programs, events and lectures. The George Bush Library and Museum changes programs and exhibits and offers new ones each year,

he said. Featured exhibits in 2013 include “Genome: The Secret of How Life Works,” “access/ABILITY” and an exhibit celebrating the 75th anniversary of the City of College Station. For more information, including a schedule of events and programs, visit http:// bushlibrary.tamu.edu.

Customers of Ozona Grill & Bar in College Station associate the restaurant with the relaxed patio atmosphere. So do The Eagle’s readers, as the local hot spot won the Readers’ Choice Award for “Best Outdoor/Patio Dining.” The College Station Ozona is the second location for the popular restaurant. The original Ozona opened in 1992 near SMU in Dallas. Named after a famous West Texas town, the menu at Ozona Grill & Bar was inspired by traditional Texas and border cuisine. The Dallas Ozona’s trademark was its patio dining areas, often regarded as the biggest and shadiest in the city. The Sleep Station, an Aggie owned and operated business, is dedicated to taking care of customers’ bedding needs, and that dedication likely helped it win the 2013 Readers’ Choice “Best Mattress Store” award. The Sleep Station first opened in College Station in 2002. Jarrad McLeod, A&M Class of 2003, learned the business as an employee before purchasing The Sleep Station in 2006, and moving it to its current location the same year. Besides Bryan and College Station, The Sleep Station services many surrounding communities, including Madisonville, Centerville, Normangee, North Zulch, Hearne, Caldwell and Brenham. The Sleep Station is a retail mattress store that carries many of the biggest brands of bedding, including Sealy Posturepedic, Serta,

Stearns & Foster and Spring Air. It is also a one of the largest Tempur-Pedic retailers in Central Texas, and is a nationally recognized Tempur-Pedic Elite Retailer – a status that is awarded to the most outstanding authorized dealers. All of The Sleep Station’s products are made in the United States, most of which are made in Texas. Most of the store’s mattresses can be used on adjustable ergonomic foundations, which give customers the ability to elevate the head and feet portions of their bed electrically. In addition to mattresses and adjustable beds, the store carries a full line of bed frames, metal and wood beds, Tempur-Pedic pillows and linens and Sheex Performance sheets and mattress protectors. “Having dealt with all the major mattress brands, we pride ourselves on our product knowledge, and are

very familiar with all of the products currently on the market – which helps us to merchandise our store to benefit the customer,” McLeod said. McLeod said what sets his business apart from competition is that it is locally owned, and it is the only Aggie owned and operated business of its kind in the area. He believes his store won its first Readers’ Choice award for “Best Mattress Store” because it is well established in the community, and is a recognizable brand as the Preferred Mattress Provider of the Texas A&M Sports Network. McLeod was proud to win the award. “It is a great honor,” he said. “We won a Newman 10 Award this year, and along with the honor of winning a Readers’ Choice award, it has been a wonderful year.” McLeod said his business has grown significantly since it opened. “We have grown our business exponentially over the past five years,” McLeod said. “Starting from humble beginnings in a small location, we moved into a larger, more visible location in 2006. We have truly

embraced the fact that we are an Aggie owned business and really hammer that home in our advertising approach.” McLeod plans to continue growing The Sleep Station. He has plans to open a second location in South College Station this August.

Atkinson Toyota was voted the 2013 “Best Auto Repair Shop,” “Best Oil Change,” “Best Auto Part Store,” “Best Car Dealer,” “Best Auto Salesperson” for Josh Stevens, along with “Best Receptionist” for Megan Blake. Paul Atkinson, general manager for Atkinson Toyota attributed winning such accolades year after year to three things: people, processes and product. “It’s not about me,” Atkinson said. “We have the best people. They really care about what they do.” Atkinson Toyota associates compose the dealership’s processes based on how customers would like them improved, and Toyota is a great product because of quality, dependability and reliability, he said. “It speaks volumes about our people and our processes,” he said about the dealership winning seven categories in the 2013 Readers’ Choice awards. “It’s always humbling when the folks in your community vote you the best.” The dealership has also won the “President’s Award”awarded by Toyota to the top 1 percent of Toyota dealerships in the United States - 14 consecutive years. It has also won Readers’ Choice and the Best of the Brazos Valley awards numerous times. “We must be doing something right,” Atkinson said. Consumer confidence in the Toyota brand and in the automobile industry has picked up; 2013 will be a good year for the vehicle industry overall and 2014 will be even better, Atkinson said. That’s because of a “huge, pent-up demand for a wide variety of reasons,” he said. People have put off buying vehicles because of a weak economy and a lack of confidence in the political arena and economy, and also because all manufacturers are building better vehicles that last longer, Atkinson said.

The average car on American roads is 11.4 years old, he said. The increasing consumer confidence has been evident locally at Atkinson Toyota. “Our last few months have been phenomenal,” he said, adding that Atkinson has been growing its stocking level of vehicles, as well as its staff number. The Toyota brand is the leading manufacturer for miles per gallon, is safer than ever, and also has the hybrid Prius, he said. Atkinson said he had the opportunity to visit Japan, and learned why it’s an ideal place for manufacturing the “very best product.” The Japanese use a term, “kaizan” that means continuous improvement. “Toyota is about improving every single day,” he said. “That’s what sets them apart.” Atkinson Toyota has also held the “Repo Joe” sales for the last 12 years. The monthly used car event has become a big event with car shoppers and helps create new Atkinson customers each time. Atkinson said he has learned what it takes to have a successful business over the years. “Hire the best people you can, be very clear on their goals and objectives, give them the tools they need to reach those goals and objectives and get out of their way,” he said, noting that the latter was the hardest part for him to learn. “Let them do their job.” Perhaps hiring the best people is why Josh Stevens was recognized as “Best Auto Salesperson.” “I’ve been with Atkinson Toyota for five years and honestly wouldn’t want to be anywhere else,” Stevens said. “I’ve learned a lot from the people I work with and sincerely enjoy this community, the customers and the product we offer here at Atkinson Toyota.” For more information about

Best Vein Center

2013

Summertime can be an embarrassing time of year for people suffering from vein diseases such as varicose veins. People suffering from such conditions want fast relief, and by providing that in a friendly environment, Central Texas Vein Center earned the 2013 Readers’ Choice for “Best Vein Center.” Dr. H. Andrew (“Andy”) Hansen has been treating vein problems for more than 30 years and believes that the key to any successful practice is making the patient as comfortable as possible from the time they walk in the door to the end of their visit. “Growing up as an Aggie, I’ve always believed in treating people the way I would like to be treated,” Hansen said. “The patient always comes first and we provide that service in a quiet, private office setting.” Central Texas Vein Center employs some of the latest technology in vein treatment.

They were the first in the area to offer the VeinWave procedure for small spider veins, which avoids the need for compression hose that is required for sclerotherapy (injections). Patients can resume normal activity and go out in the sunlight immediately. VeinWave also is the treatment of choice for “red spots” seen in many fair-skinned individuals. For varicose veins, the VNUS Closure uses a radio frequency catheter to quickly and relatively painlessly close diseased veins for good. The radio frequency energy heats the affected vein, causing it to collapse and seal shut. The procedure takes less than an hour, is relatively painless, and the patient is up and walking immediately. It is covered by most insurance and Medicare. It is far superior to the archaic “vein stripping,” which was disliked by patients and surgeons alike. “I’ve been really impressed

with the way treatment has progressed with venous disease over the last five to 10 years,” Hansen said. “The new treatment technology has gotten to the point where you can resume normal activity without any interruption. You could get this procedure done on your lunch break and be ready to go right back to work with virtually no risk- in the comfort of our office. No hospitalization is required!” Hansen comes to Central Texas Vein Center with an extensive background not only in vein care, but cardiovascular surgery, as well. He has more than 4,000 open heart procedures and more than 3,000 peripheral vascular surgeries to his credit. He graduated from Texas A&M in 1971 with a bachelor’s degree in zoology. He was a proud member of the Corps of Cadets, the Ross Volunteers and the Ross Volunteers Firing Squad, and was named to Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities. From there he attended the Texas Tech School of Medicine, Baylor School of Medicine, where he studied under renowned heart surgeon, Dr. Michael DeBakey, and then attended Emory University School of Medicine.

Central Texas Vein Center 2803 Earl Rudder Freeway, Suite 100 College Station 979.696.8346 | www.centraltexasveincenter.com In addition to his surgical and his staff at Central Texas experience, Hansen was also Vein Center. “I would like to thank all of the first surgeon in Texas to implant the first Jarvik Acute the patients and friends who Ventricular Assistance device voted for us,” he said. “We are for heart failure in 1987 and the thrilled to be recognized and fifth surgeon in the U.S. to per- we’re going to strive to be even form Robotic-Assisted Trans- better in the future.” myocardial Laser Revascularization (TMLR). He has been on the leading edge of new minimally invasive procedures, such as Off-Pump Coronary Artery Bypass (OPCAB), and EndoVascular Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair (EVAR) his entire career. Hansen and his wife, Kathy, have five children and he credits his family as the inspiration for his success in treating patients. The importance of family for him is what leads him to care for the patients and their families the way he does. Being recognized by his patients through the Readers’ Choice Awards Dr. H. Best Home Health Care Provider

2013

Merryman Home Health Inc. won the Readers’ Choice “Best Home Health Care Provider” award because caring employees provide good care, the owner said. “Not only do they know their job, but they’re caring and compassionate,” Merryman owner Kimblery McCormick said. “I think people can see that when they’re out there.” McCormick has worked in the home health industry since 1987. After a company she worked for was purchased by a corporation, she decided to start her own business. She started Merryman Home Health Inc. out of her home in Franklin in 2005, and relocated her office two years later to the square in Franklin. In 2010 McCormick opened a second location in preparation for the new Scott & White

hospital opening in College Station. Merryman Home Health Inc. goes to patients’ homes, and provides skilled nursing, physical therapy and personal care services, such as bathing and dressing. The business provides services in a 75mile radius from Franklin, covering the Brazos Valley. McCormick was excited to be a first-time Readers’ Choice award winner. “We’re super excited,” she said. “We feel honored to win. We try really hard to take care of our patients.” McCormick said being a small, locally owned company sets her business apart from the competition. Because the business is small, employees aren’t focused on the number of patients they see, and are truly caring, she said. She also carefully selects employees.

“I hand pick employees,” she said. “If I wouldn’t want them in my house, I wouldn’t send them to your home.” McCormick said she has no current plans for expanding her business. “If you get too big, you lose that personal touch,” she said.

Odor decontamination is typically requested because of pet odors. “Professionals can alleviate or remove most odor problems,” Mark said. “Stretching takes care of wrinkles caused by faulty installation, and if a chemical has caused discoloration, or if a pet has damaged the carpet, we can repair those areas.” Education is one thing that sets his business apart from the competition. Mark is one of 1,300 IICRC Master Textile Cleaners and one of 800 IICRC Senior Carpet Inspectors in the world – the highest level a professional you can reach in this industry. Boller’s Carpet Cleaning’s recognition as the 2013 Readers’ Choice “Best Carpet Cleaning” winner reflects what the owner, Mark Boller, said he already knew – “that Boller’s is the best in the area.” Started in College Station 25 years ago, Mark has been in the industry 31 years. Now he owns it along with his son, David Boller and Miguel Rodriguez. Boller’s Carpet Cleaning provides on-location carpet and upholstery cleaning. Mark also operates an oriental rug cleaning plant, where technicians clean rugs according to manufacturer’s specifications. Other services offered include odor decontamination, carpet repair, stretching, tile and grout cleaning and sealing (applying a sealer to tile prevents surfaces from becoming dirty and stained) and water restoration. Water restoration involves removing water from carpets,

won the award because of its integrity, professionalism and friendliness of his staff. “They’re not just clients, they’re family,” he said. “We just make sure we take care of them.” This award validates what Mark has already known: Boller’s is the best in the Brazos Valley. After job completion a survey is sent to each client. The worst thing people say is that his services are more expensive than other carpet cleaners, but they also say it’s “well worth every dime.” Mark said “not all service professionals are created equal.” If a customer has a problem with work that Boller’s Carpet Cleaning has done, the company will return to fix it. If technicians still can’t appease a client, Boller’s will refund the money, and hire another company to take care of the job. Customer satisfaction starts with a free quotation given in the client’s home during the initial consultation. Clients will get an accurate quote. Everyone knows what’s going to occur and the cost – making them more comfortable. “Our goal is to make sure everyone is 100 percent satisfied,” Mark said.

Best Golf Course

2013

The Eagle • theeagle.com

Sunday, June 30, 2013

Traditions Club is this year’s Readers’ Choice winner for “Best Golf Course.” Winning the award is a “testament to the pride and diligence” of everyone involved with the club, declared Traditions Club General Manager, Bill Horton. Traditions Club, located at 3131 Club Drive in Bryan, opened in 2004. Ac-

cording to Horton, Traditions Club’s goal is to be the premiere private golf club and residential community in the Bryan-College Station area, and also in Texas. “Traditions Club aims to provide something for everyone, particularly Aggies, to enjoy,” stated Horton. “The owners of Traditions Club wanted a place for citizens of Bryan and College Station, as well as those in the surrounding areas, to call home or feel at home while visiting the area.” Traditions Club offers several amenities for its members, including the Jack Nicklaus-I and Jack Nicklaus IIdesigned golf course. The 7,146-yard course features

stately hardwoods, many natural creeks and wetlands and views of Texas A&M University’s Kyle Field and campus skyline. Traditions Club feels its affiliation with Texas A&M University sets it apart from other golf clubs. The club is home to the Texas A&M Men’s and Women’s Golf teams. The A&M Learning Center, an educational and instructional facility for the A&M golf teams, is also at Traditions Club. The centerpiece of Traditions Club is the 25,000 squarefoot Clubhouse, capable of hosting private, business, or social events at the club. The Clubhouse features the Century Room, Sully Dining Room, 12th Man Bar and Grille, 1876 Wine Cellar, and an outdoor terrace and event lawn to enjoy the scenic landscape of the club. Traditions Club also has three pools that are designed for swimmers of all ages, and is accompanied by the pool grille, which serves lunch, dinner, and drinks throughout the summer. Plus, certain events at Traditions Club are tailored for Texas A&M supporters, such as the “Member Yell” every Friday night before all home football games. Traditions Club provides its members with the opportunity to choose from a variety of membership options. These offerings cover a range of choices designed to suit a number of lifestyle options, including golf and social memberships. While members do not have to be property owners, there are also several options for those who wish to buy a home in the residential community. These include: Game Day Cottages, Hidden Bridge Con-

dominiums, Garden Homes, Custom Estates, Villas and Estate Home sites. Several homes view the golf course; others overlook the natural creek and preserve areas. The Traditions Club’s vision to “revolutionize the country club experience” might have helped the club win the Readers’ Choice award. The owners are all Texas A&M alumni, who have a shared vision of Traditions Club becoming the premiere private country club in the state. Since their inception in 2004, the clubhouse and pool have both been substantially enhanced, and a state-of-theart cover shot has been added to the driving range. “This vision would not be possible if it were not for ownership and staff working collectively to create exceptional experiences for our members and guests each and every day,” Horton remarked. Traditions Club, which had a change of ownership in 2009, strives to further enhance its facilities. “While humbled by winning this award, we are also motivated to continue maintaining a standard of excellence as an organization and consistently provide a casually elegant experience for our members and guests.” Presently, the greens are being renovated with Champions

This will provide a playing experience rivaling that of any course within driving distance of Bryan, according to the Traditions Club. “From the ownership and staff, to the members and guests, it takes a collaborative effort to be able to provide the experience that Traditions Club has to offer,” Horton explained.

Giving clients one less thing to worry about has been Merry Maids’ philosop h y since the company w a s founded in 1979. David and Josie King brought that attitude to Bryan/ College S t a t i o n in 1999. Four teen years later, they are still helping customers and are the 2013 Readers’ Choice for “Best Housekeeping.” Merry Maids, the nation’s largest professional residential cleaning service, has been servicing the cleaning needs of the Brazos Valley since 1999, when Josie and David King opened the local business. “We considered several dif-

ferent industries, but settled on the residential cleaning industry and particularly Merry Maids after visiting their Memphis headquarters and visiting several offices throughout Texas,” David said. “We had a little bit of a shaky start, but we won the company’s Rookie of the Year out of 35 new franchises nationwide.” Merry Maids will send a team of two trained cleaning professionals into your home to address your cleaning needs that were previously identified from a free in-home consultation by their cleaning consultant. While some companies will quote a price over the phone, Merry Maids feel it’s important to view the home and consult with the owner about their specific cleaning

needs. It is also important that they understand the cleaning process. Rather than quote an hourly rate, where you may or may not be able to complete the cleaning, Merry Maids believe it is more advantageous to the customer to quote a fixed price for the job. That way, regardless of the amount of time, Merry Maids will complete the cleaning. Merry Maids will provide one-time cleaning specials or place the customer on a regular-scheduled cleaning on a weekly, bi-weekly, tri-weekly or monthly service. Most Merry Maid customers are on a regular-scheduled service where they receive the same team for each cleaning. No contracts are required. “We have a great team of employees that have been with us for several years, and I believe our employee retention is one of the keys to our ability to provide the quality of service our customers expect,” David said. “It is our employees that have won this award, and we give them all the recognition for making this possible. They are the ones that cement the relationship with our customers. I believe the quality of our service today is greater than several years ago because

They appreciate and thank their loyal customers and the readers for taking the time to recognize Merry Maids in this manner, and Merry Maids will strive to live up to this award. “It’s great to get positive feedback from customers in the service business because it says you are heading in the right direction,” David said. “However, positive feedback can turn negative just as quick

if you don’t focus on pleasing every customer. The most difficult part of this business is when you lose a customer because you didn’t deliver on your promise. Every customer has to realize value from the cleaning.” Merry Maids has made great strides since opening here 14 years ago, and the Kings’ plan to continue that trend in the future. Best Pest Control

2013

RP Lee Termite & Pest Control’s commitment to customer service and quality service is evident, as the business was voted this year’s Readers’ Choice “Best Pest Control” winner. Owner Randy Lee said after he graduated from Texas A&M University in 1983, he wanted to start his own company. He had a friend who was in the pest control business, so in 1985, he got a business license, hired his friend, and started his first pest control company, called Bug Blasters Pest Control. Bug Blasters was sold in 1994 to Orkin, and after staying with Orkin five years, Lee took on a Wood Destroying Insect (WDI) consulting role for a few years before founding RP Lee Termite & Pest Control in 2004. He chose the pest control business because it’s rewarding. “I believe it is rewarding to know you are supporting your community and helping people protect their property, family or business from unwanted pests,” he said. RP Lee Termite & Pest Control provides residential and commercial pest control, termite control, rodent and varmint control, WDI inspections/ reports for home buying or refinance, mosquito misting systems, water mister cooling systems, lawn fertilization and weed/ disease control services and bat and bird exclusion services. A favorite product of many customers is the mosquito misting systems, which the business installs and maintains, Lee said. Lee said he believes the company’s commitment to customer service is what sets it apart from the competition. “We take pride in being quick to resolve any problems or issues that our customers have,” he said. “We provide customer-focused service, at the best value possible.

We also provide a wider range of service offerings, compared to other pest control companies, while still remaining locally and Aggie-owned and operated.” RP Lee Termite & Pest Control likely won its first Readers’ Choice award partly because of the company’s recent work at Texas A&M’s Kyle Field and Blue Bell Park, the new Scott & White Hospital in College Station and at the A&M Health Science Center, Lee said. The work has made the company more visible to the community in the past year, and several media outlets have covered its bat exclusion work at Kyle Field. Plus, word of mouth has helped the business, he added. “The growth of our customer base has always come from satisfied customers sharing their experiences via word of mouth, so we like to think that had a lot to do with the win,” he said. Lee said staff members are excited to win the award. “We feel honored that the people of this great community acknowledge that our company is making a positive impact,” he said. “Being recognized and appreciated by your customers and your community is very gratifying for the owner of any company.”

bird exclusion services. In addition, service areas have expanded beyond the Brazos Valley to include Conroe, Montgomery, Willis, Waco, Temple and Killeen. Soon, Lee plans to add insect and disease control services for trees, and in the next year, hopes to continue expansion of the customer base for lawn fertilization and weed/disease control services. Plus, in the works are plans to provide even more bat and bird exclusion services locally and throughout Texas.

Growth

Since opening, RP Lee has grown from a small, familyrun company to a thriving mid-sized business, while still keeping the small company feel and personalized service customers love, Lee said. The number of technicians has grown from one technician to 12, and the office has expanded from one staff member to five. In the past two years, the company has added new services, such as its lawn fertilization, weed/disease control services and water mister cooling systems. It has also expanded bat and

Best Bank

2013

Wells Fargo may be one of the largest banks in America, but what sets the company apart is that it is a large bank that behaves like a community bank. “We understand that a healthy bank depends on a healthy community, and that we have a significant impact on every community we serve,” said Area President David O’Neil. “Our understanding is based on conversations we have every day - with our customers, community leaders, elected officials, friends, family and neighbors. We are working to ensure that we make a real difference in Bryan/College Station.” Examples would be how actively involved Wells Fargo team members are in the civic life of Bryan and College Station. The company, and its team members, jointly contributed over $326,000 to schools and nonprofits last year. The team has built at least one Habitat for Humanity house each year for the past 16 years. And 25 Wells Fargo team members serve on 21 local nonprofit boards. “Our team has a strong sense of responsibility to the communities where they live, work and play – just like their customers do,” added O’Neil. In fact, he said, the first and foremost duty is putting customers first. “Wells Fargo is second to none when it comes to professional, courteous team members and a full set of products and services,” O’Neil said. “However, our key consideration is putting the customer at the center of everything we do. We are proud of our customer service. In fact, we constantly, continuously measure how we are doing against our customers’ expectations, and we consistently score well.” O’Neil said those customers, and their high expectations, inspire Wells Fargo to strive for continuous improvement. “We know our customers want the best in customer service, banking products and convenience, and would not be satisfied with anything less,” he said. “That drives us to get better and better.” To demonstrate the variety of customers served, Wells Fargo ranks as America’s No.

Wells Fargo 979-776-3277 | www.wellsfargo.com

1 SBA lender, No. 1 mortgage lender, No. 1 auto lender and is the nation’s No. 2 provider of private student loans. In addition, the company has been named a top innovator for mobile services and a corporate leader in fraud prevention services. “These rankings are impressive, and a source of pride for us,” said O’Neil, “but as our Chairman, John Stumpf, reminds us, ‘Being bigger doesn’t make us better … being better is what helps us become bigger.’ We say in our Vision & Values that if we help our customers succeed, our own growth and profitability will take care of itself.” O’Neil said it is extremely gratifying when this commitment to customers is repaid with recognition, such as being named Best Bank by the readers of The Eagle. “What matters most about winning the Readers’ Choice Award is that the voters are our customers,” he said. “To put it bluntly, they are the reason we are in business. We are grateful for their recognition and pledge to do everything we can to deserve it.” O’Neil added that Wells Fargo is working to be a “part of the solution” for customers in Bryan-College Station and across the nation. “We are lending to businesses, helping people buy homes, keeping people in their homes, developing new approaches to customer service, contributing to our communities, supporting our schools and increasing our efforts at sustainability and the environment,” O’Neil said. “We are striving to be one of the world’s great companies one customer a time. In Bryan-College Station, Wells Fargo has five banking stores with 150 team members who draw on deep roots in the community. Wells Fargo has been serving the BryanCollege Station area since 1885, when Wells Fargo & Co. opened an express office in Bryan. This long history, this deep sense of place, helps explain our connection to the region and its people. For more information, go to www.wellsfargo.com or call 979-776-3277.

share their satisfaction with friends and neighbors.” The majority of foundation problems come from homes built on a grade or on unstable soil. Anchor Foundation Repair can fix either problem with its deep-drill method. The foundation pier runs 10 to 12 feet deep, meaning the support is anchored in soil that maintains a relatively constant moisture level. Customers are quick to praise Anchor Foundation Repair for its quality work. One such example is a letter sent by a homeowner who found paperwork from a foundation repair 14 years earlier, and was compelled to contact Anchor Foundation Repair. “You may have forgotten the job by now, but I wanted to let you know your foundation repair has held up perfectly all these years,” the letter reads. “It’s almost

hard to believe 14 years have gone by since you repaired the foundation, but it is still in perfect condition.” Anchor Foundation Repair matches the quality of its technique with the quality of its service and is the 2009 Better Business Bureau Torch Award winner for marketplace ethics. Because Anchor Foundation Repair provides a thorough and honest assessment of each structure’s current and preventative needs, it is able to avoid charging customers for unnecessary services. Honesty, ethics and the highest quality of service are at the forefront of the business, and are the reason customers have voted Anchor Foundation Repair as a Readers’ Choice winner once again. “We are very honored to win this award,” Tripp said. “I would like to thank our customers for their

trust in our work and their continued referrals.” If you have doors that are sticking or cracks in sheetrock or mortar, don’t wait any longer to call Anchor Foundation Repair for your free foundation inspection. If your home

does need foundation repair, you can rest assured knowing the repairs will be handled by a team voted by the community to be the best in town.

of the restaurant stretches much farther back. The Rodriguez family-cooking legacy dates back to 1898 when a young man from Zacatecas, Mexico named Manuel Rodriguez came to Bryan to work the railroads. Manuel took the money he earned on the railroads and opened a Mexican restaurant behind the Ben Knox Saloon, near the railroad depot in downtown Bryan. He served homemade Mexican stew and other dishes that became very popular with both locals and travelers. Among those dishes was the chili recipe that is still served today at Casa Rodriguez. Many of those recipes were passed down to Paul and Chelo Rodriguez, who passed them down to Richard and Beatrice, who in turn passed them down to Debbie and her daughters Lauren and Jamie. It is those cherished family recipes that set Casa Rodriguez apart from other restaurants in the area and have sent many a customer

Koppe Bridge Bar & Grill was voted by The Eagle readers for the “Best Burgers” award for the 14th consecutive year, recognizing the business for 21 years of feeding juicy burgers to hungry Aggies and other locals. Koppe Bridge Bar & Grill has two College Station locations -- 11777 Wellborn Road and 3940 Harvey Road. Delph Ross, who owns Koppe Bridge along with his wife, Glenda Ross, said both eateries have been “serving BryanCollege Station the Best Big Burger in Town for over 20 years now.” Koppe Bridge started as a local spot out in the county on Wellborn Road with the vision of serving a few burgers and some “really cold beer,” according to the restaurant. Winning The Eagle’s Readers’ Choice Award for the sixth time has been a wonderful experience for Dr. Elms and his team. “What makes us most excited is the challenge of constantly advancing the orthodontic experience and exceeding patient expectations. Receiving The Eagle’s Readers’ Choice award is a confirmation that we are getting it right with the people we care about most – our patients,” said Dr. Elms. A positive patient experience is a key phrase in Dr. Elms’ practice. Regular team meetings center on shaping the patient experience to ensure higher and higher levels of satisfaction, efficiency and

enjoyment. The Elms team does this by focusing on the most minute of details. “Can paperwork be reduced?” “Is the temperature right?” “Are options clearly explained?” “Are we listening to what patients have to say?” ‘What additional training can we take to advance our skills?” “What can we do to better engage and educate patients during their appointments?” The list is endless, as is Dr. Elms’ quest to keep refining his craft. Look in on Dr. Elms’ practice, and you see he has two distinct groups of patients that they serve exceedingly well: the young students who are getting braces for the first time and adults who may have

Dr. Troy N. Elms 1501 Emerald Parkway, College Station 979-693-6300 | www.drelms.com shuttle, to and from school. Fun is also a big component for the student patients. Including the most anticipated Elms summer event – the annual Adamson Lagoon swim party, where food, fun and antics take center stage as hundreds of patients from the Brazos Valley have the party of the summer, all courtesy of Elms Orthodontics. And, to peek in, it would appear that Dr. Elms and team are having as much fun as the guests. Dr. Elms has not only managed to create a truly special environment, but has done so without compromising orthodontic quality. This combination is what endears patients to Dr. Elms, his loyal staff and to the great results they produce. Located conveniently on the Northeast corner of the

intersection of the Highway 6 Bypass and F.M. 2818/Emerald Parkway, Dr. Elms’ building has become the benchmark for what a modern orthodontic practice can be. Unmistakably inviting, a huge porte-cochere welcomes cars and knocks the Texas heat off arriving patients. And the interior harbors a thousand little touches to make it special like an in-house movie theater and hand held consoles at each treatment station, allowing patients to surf the Internet. If you are considering braces for your child or yourself, give Dr. Elms a visit. It will be one of the best decisions you’ve ever made and one of the best experiences. You’re going to love Elms Orthodontics!

had braces as a child and need adjustments to their bite, or adults who have never had braces. The two groups are accommodated in different ways to ensure the orthodontic treatment matches their lifestyle and needs. For adults, the treatment choices are becoming increasingly diverse and effective. Ranging from Braces, that are invisibly installed on the back of teeth; Clarity ceramic braces that are translucent and nearly invisible; and Invisalign, which are not braces at all, but a clear aligning system that has become very popular within recent years. These and other techniques all offer effective alternatives to conventional braces for adults. And Dr. Elms makes sure they always produce a beautiful, aligned smile. When it comes to youth orthodontics, Dr. Elms is in a league of his own. Students love the Elms experience, beginning with the Orthomobile - which is the free, chauffeured Hummer

Best Home Builder And Home Improvement Contractor

2013 Whether building your dream home or undertaking a once-in-a-lifetime renovation, finding a contractor who can exceed your expectations is a dream come true. When the B-CS community was asked, readers of The Eagle again selected Richmon Homes as the “Best Home Builder” and “Best Home Improvement Contractor” for the second year in a row. Being selected for both of these categories is a great honor, and owners Richard and Monica Palasota know they earned this designation as a direct result of their hard work and dedication to their clients. “We have always believed in giving the best possible service at the best possible price to our customer,” Richard said. “That’s the way our family has been doing business in the B-CS

area for over a century.” Richard and Monica understand that personal dedication to their clients has made Richmon Homes stand out above the rest, and they are thrilled with the feedback they have received from the community. “We take pride in the work we do and it shows in the feedback we get from our clients,” said Monica. “It’s always nice to be recognized for our dedication to our homeowners.” Richard is a fourth-generation Bryan-College Station native and along with his wife, Monica, they have raised their children and grandchildren in the Brazos Valley. Having lived here his entire life, he has developed a thorough understanding of the local building community. “We have built a strong network of satisfied customers and business

partners over the years, and I am blessed to have been doing it for so long,” he said. Both Richard and Monica credit a large portion of their success to a long-term commitment to personal development and continued education in residential construction. Richard has earned designations from the National Association of Home Builders as a Certified Graduate Builder, Certified Aging in Place Specialist and Certified Green Professional. These qualifications are only shared by 10 percent of residential contractors nationwide, giving Richmon Homes a unique ability to better service their clients. Richard combines his decades of experience in residential construction and his continued education to design perfectly tailored homes, but together, Richard and Monica are a building team that can’t be beat. From renovations to building your dream home, call Richard and Monica at Richmon Homes and see just why they’ve earned the Readers’ Choice awards for “Best Home Builder” and “Best Home Improvement Contractor.”

Whether buying or selling a house, having the right real estate agent can make the transaction considerably easier. When readers of The Eagle were asked, RE/ MAX Select agent, Monica Palasota was clearly chosen as the “Best Real Estate Agent” in the 2013 Readers’ Choice Awards. For more than 12 years, Monica has been passionate about providing the best possible service to her clients. Having her clients show their appreciation through this award is an honor and something she is thankful for. “This award has special meaning to me since it was given by the community, the readers and my clients,” Monica said. “Winning is such a blessing. after the transaction. They are confident when making referrals to me because they know their friends will receive the same priority and great service they received.” Monica credits her success to the fact she treats her clients as business partners during the home buying or selling process. She strives to make the process a team effort and includes her clients throughout the transaction. This allows the client a strong voice in the decisions along the way. The end result is usually something stronger than a regular agent-client relationship. “I love my job, and I love working with the people in this community,” she said. “As I work with clients, many become more like family to me.” The local real estate market is large and there are many agents from whom shoppers may choose. Monica knows this and is grateful to be singled out by her clients and the community as one of the best. Energized from her Readers’ Choice Award, she is ready to make new friends and help more people find their dream home.

Best Burrito

2013

Aggies and non-Aggies alike love burritos from Freebirds World Burrito. The eatery won the 2013 Readers’ Choice “Best Burrito” award. The first Freebirds World Burrito location opened in Santa Barbara, California. The eatery came to College Station four years later in 1991, where it soon became a hit. Jamie Williams, Freebirds Regional Manager, said Freebirds is all about choices and fresh ingredients. “Since the beginning, it’s been all about freedom of choice,” Williams said. “Four sizes of burritos with four flavors of tortillas. Nachos built from house-made chips. Plus bowls, salads and quesadillas. Fresh. Natural. Way more choices with oneto-one service. That’s the way Freebirds rolls.” What sets Freebirds World Burrito apart from the competition is that customers get a “roller,” who helps them

navigate their way through an assembly line of more than 35 trillion possible combinations. Williams’ reaction to winning the “Best Burrito” award? “It’s tough to be so loved,” he said. He believes Freebirds World Burrito won the award because of fresh ingredients and lots of choices. “We do what’s right for the burrito,” Williams said. “Our team helps you select from a truckload of freshly-prepared ingredients, including hormone-free, grass-fed beef and hormone-free chicken,

hand-cut peppers and veggies, plus homemade salsas, queso and guac. Plus a ton of freebies to build your burrito the way you want.” Since Freebirds World Burrito opened its first location, the company has added three more locations in College Station. It has restaurants on University Drive (Northgate district), on Texas Avenue, on Earl Rudder Freeway (Gateway) and on Longmire Drive, off Rock Prairie Road. Williams said Freebirds has recently opened new locations in different states. “Since we’ve opened in College Station, we have spread our wings across the country,” he said. “We’ve recently opened new locations in California, Kansas and Missouri, and look forward to a very bright and awesome future.

Wings ‘N More® is known by local residents for its wings, and that was made even more evident as customers voted the restaurant for the 2013 Readers’ Choice “Best Wings” award. They can now add “Best Onion Rings” to their list, as well. Wings ‘N More®, 1511 University Drive in College Station, prides itself on giving guests high-quality food, drinks and service at a great price. Wings ‘N More has been Aggie owned and operated for 26 years. The Wings ‘N More® chain was founded in 1987 by Mark Dennard, A&M Class of 1978. Dennard came up with the concept during the time he was playing football in the NFL. Dennard played NFL football for nine years, seven with the Miami Dolphins and two with the Philadelphia Eagles. During his time in Miami, he was introduced to “buffalo style” chicken wings. He became a fan of the spicy wings, according to the

company, and sampled several types of wings during football season travels. Dennard found the best wings were in Miami, and he and his family were disappointed in the lack of availability of the wings while spending the off-season at home in Texas. By the time he retired from football, he had decided to open his first wings restaurant in Houston. The business started slowly, but Wings ‘N More® restaurants have steadily gained acceptance and grown a loyal following, according to the company’s website. Richard Gonzalez, director of marketing, said he believes Wings ‘N More® won the awards because it “undoubtedly meets and exceeds customer demand for taste, value, convenience, service and quality.” Winning these awards indicates that Wings ‘N More® stands out from the competition, he said. “Winning the Readers’

We have learned that our guests always know what they want, and they deserve the best. They are the driving force for what we do, and we know that we could never do it without them. Best Liquor Store

2013

Sunday, June 30, 2013

When the folks of Bryan/ College Station want to celebrate an event, have a backyard BBQ, watch the big game or plan a dinner party with the neighbors, they turn to Spec’s Wines, Spirits and Finer Foods, the 2013 Readers’ Choice for “Best Liquor Store.” Since 1962, family-owned Spec’s has been providing

Carroll “Spec” Jackson and his wife, Carolynn Jackson

exceptional service and an impressive selection of unique finds for hungry and thirsty Texans. With locations all across the Lone Star State, this once-small company now has tens of thousands of products in Texas Superstores, including thousands of wines, spirits, mixers, hundreds of craft beers, walk -in humidors, gourmet foods and bar accessories. On April 1, 1962, Carroll Jackson (affectionately nicknamed “Spec” because of his signature eyeglasses) opened the first Spec’s with his wife, Carolynn, in Houston, Texas. One day, Spec sketched out a caricature of a bunny in glasses, symbolizing his quick, friendly service. People loved it, and it has been the Spec’s logo ever since. In less than 10 years, the demand for more Spec’s locations grew. The Jacksons’ daughter, Lindy, and her husband John, came on board in 1971, and just three

years later, they introduced the largest selection of wines Houston had seen. With tens of thousands of products, and now Texas’ largest selection of wines, spirits and beers, plus premium cigars, fresh gourmet foods, bar accessories and much, much more, Spec’s has truly become a destination shopping experience and a Texas institution. Today, Spec’s has expanded across the state with locations in Austin, Bastrop, Beaumont, Brenham, Bryan/College Station, Corpus Christi, Dallas, Fort Worth, El Paso, Galveston, Houston, Kerrville, Killeen, Lubbock, San Antonio, Victoria and Waco/Temple. “Spec’s couldn’t be happier about the continued expansion of our business across Texas,” says Lisa Rydman Key, third generation spokesperson. “We hope hungry and thirsty Texans are as happy to receive us as we are to provide expert service and everyday low prices on Texas’ largest selection of wines, beer and much more.” Although Spec and Carolynn have since passed away, the values and standards they started are still at the core of this Texas family-owned business. Best Physician

2013

“I am very happy and at the same time quite humbled to be voted for this honor.” Dr. Bobby Bains replied when notified that he had won the Readers’ Choice Award for “Best Physician” for the third time. Bains is a board certified Radiation Oncologist. His specialty is to treat cancer using radiation beams. “Most people don’t know what I do, unless someone in their family has cancer,” Dr. Bains explained. “The best description of my job is ‘virtual surgery.’ I utilize images from a CT scan of a patient to develop a 3D reconstruction of the cancer inside the body using specialized, sophisticated software. This cancer is then targeted with radiation beams. Beams enter the body at various angles to zap the tumor, but avoid critical normal tissues along the way.” There is no need to make

surgical cuts; since the X-ray beams are painless, no anesthesia is needed. Once destroyed, the body’s immune system gets rid of the cancer. Dr. Bains credits his selection as “Best Physician” to listening carefully to the desires and wishes of his patients. “What sets us apart from other centers is our use of a ‘Patient-Centric” Quality Care Model. We do not use a “one size fits all” approach. Dr Bains spends the time to present all available options, and engages patients in their health care decisions. This allows patients to choose the best therapy options for them. Cancer Therapy is a rapidly changing field and new innovations come up regularly. For this reason, the American Board of Radiology requires physicians to take a Board Certification exam every 10 years. Dr. Bains has just been re-certified. While being up-

to-date is a pre-requisite to practice medicine, there are other aspects required to render great care. Dr. Bains said, “The chairman of my residency training program at the University of Miami used to tell me, ‘The secret of patient care is to actually care for the patient. Once you do that, everything else falls into place.’” Dr. Bains added, “Working at Aggieland Cancer Treatment Center has been a great experience. The cancer center is committed to help guide patients and families through their entire journey to recovery. That makes my job as a physician a lot easier because I can focus on the medical aspects. I don’t do a lot of advertising, so I am very thankful (and humbled) to be voted the ‘Best Physician.’ But to be honest, there are a lot of great doctors in this community, who I work with on regular basis”. We sincerely hope that no one needs our services, but if they do, come find out why we are voted the best in the Brazos Valley!

“As a physician, I feel privileged that patients entrust me to navigate them through their cancer journey. It’s the most fulfilling job in the world.” Dr. Bobby Bains

clinical experience with patients, as well as his established research experience credentials as a National Cancer Institute Scholar, made him a great asset for our community. We had to fight hard to lure him to College Station, as his medical school Alma Mater, the University of Texas Health Science Center, was tenaciously recruiting him. What won him over was the freedom we gave him to design and start a cancer center from the ground up. What sets Aggieland Cancer Treatment Center apart is our focus on patient service. Our motto is: “Care you need, compassion you deserve!” We take pride in treatment of cancer with advanced technology and a personalized

Aggieland Cancer Treatment Center is honored to be selected as the Best Cancer Center in the Brazos Valley for the third time. This cancer center was established in 2007. The concept was to provide cuttingedge cancer treatment options locally, without having patients fight traffic or endure the lack of personal care that is often found in larger cities. Our location in College Station on the campus of Med Center Hospital provides easy access for patients. Our facilities allow us to provide the full gamut of services needed in modern oncology. The Aggieland Cancer Treatment Center started with the recruitment of Dr. Bobby Bains, a Board-Certified, Radiation Oncologist. His

patients from the time they are diagnosed, through their treatments and their post treatment surveillance. Aggieland Cancer Treatment Center continues to prosper and grow because of the positive recommendations of patients to their friends and families. We value our patients as family, as we make our patients a priority

approach to patients’ overall well being. Our professional and compassionate staff provide quality, comprehensive care to patients as they undergo cancer therapy. We follow the golden rule of treating all patients like we would expect to be treated. Who wants to wait weeks for a doctor’s appointment when there is a cancer diagnosis? Our internal policy is to set up an appointment within 24 hours. Patients don’t wait more than 15 minutes to be seen because we value our patients’ time; most importantly, our patients always have direct telephone access to our medical professionals. We take into consideration the social needs of our patients and their families, and help guide them to the appropriate community resources. Because we are an independent cancer center, we have the freedom to choose the best specialists in town, when needed, without being forced into “internalreferrals.” We help families understand the confusing world of health insurance. In essence, we help navigate our

Best Beauty Salon Day Spa, Barber, Hairstylist, Massage Therapist, Nail Salon And Nail Technician

2013

For the seventh year, Celebrity Spa & Salon is the favorite in several categories in The Eagle’s 2013 Readers’ Choice Awards. It was designated as Best Beauty Salon, Day Spa and Nail Salon. Special recognition goes to Ashley Muller, voted Best Hairstylist, Sonya Paulini, voted Best Massage Therapist, Debbie Loewe, voted Favorite Nail Technician and Dee Dee Brooks as Best Barber. They offer a complete range of salon services, the latest trends in spa pedicures, manicures and luxurious spa treatments essential for creating a sense of relaxation and rejuvenation. They recently added licensed barbering services to their lengthy list of professional services and are thrilled with Brooks’ recognition. Laura Atkinson, Leah Lucas, and their mother, Cindy Atkinson, took the reins of Celebrity Spa & Salon (then Boutique) on December 1, 2006. They have been making

improvements ever since and recently celebrated their first year in their new and improved facility. The awards and accolades have continued to pour in, and the ladies couldn’t feel more blessed. Celebrity Spa & Salon was named to the Salon Today 200 list for the second year in a row by Salon Today magazine (the top business publication for salon and spa owners), they received the Newman 10 Business Performance Award in 2012, and won several categories of the Best of the Brazos Valley and Readers’ Choice awards. Lucas said, “We are thankful to our guests and talented professionals for contributing to the awards and recognition we have received; the entire team at Celebrity operates under one philosophy: Make every guest feel like a celebrity from the moment they walk in the door to the moment they leave. We ‘roll out the pink carpet’ for each of our guests.”

Muller, a stylist with Celebrity since late 2009, is part of a highlytrained team of stylists who have knowledge of all the latest trends. She became a Certified Redken Specialist and a Certified Pureology Pureologist, and maintains her cutting edge technique with continuing education each year. “Each guest starts with a consultation,” she said. “From there we create a look that coincides with their hair type, face shape and skin tone, their lifestyle, and how they typically style their hair.” Celebrity Spa & Salon is one of the few Elite Redken Salons in Texas and its specialists understand that your hair is your best fashion accessory. When it looks amazing, so do you. Using professional products in a salon setting such as Celebrity gives you access to the newest techniques and advances in color science in the new salon professional color station. Whether you’re heading in for first-time color, or ready to try out a bold new fashion look, Celebrity Spa offers it all. Brooks, with Celebrity since January of 2012, loves to see the reaction of male clients to the addition of the barbering services. “It’s really cute to see the men become salon enthusiasts after their first visit,” she said. Loewe has been with Celebrity for four years and is an integral part of the team, as well.

Celebrity Spa & Salon 4081 State Highway 6, Suite 601, College Station 979-690-6200 | www.CelebritySpa.net “I love to help people and make them feel pampered,” says Loewe. “With this business, I get to do both every day!” The tranquil spa offers fullday spa packages, massages, professional hair removal and facials. Aestheticians offer professional make-up application featuring the Jane Iredale skin care makeup line for customers interested in makeup that’s good for the skin. Paulini, who will celebrate her second anniversary on June 27, has a presence in the spa that is palpable. Her energy is contagious, her technique already the stuff of legend. It’s part of what has

propelled the spa from a hidden secret to a thriving asset full of services. “We have reached our level of success because of our amazing guests who continue to support us and spread the word about their experiences in our salon,” says Laura Atkinson. “But we also want to thank our talented staff who work so hard and really pull together to create that Celebrity experience that our guests come to expect.” Visit www.CelebritySpa.net for a full list of services and to purchase gift certificates or call (979) 6906200 to make your appointment.
