How to help someone who’s grieving People are hurting.

Cashiers, baggers and restaurant servers. Physicians, attorneys and financial planners. Students, teachers and administrators. Medical professionals, law enforcement personnel and our military. Public servants, elected officials and retirees.

Religious professionals, business owners and construction workers. Parents, grandparents, teens and children.

Neighbors, co-workers and our own family members.

Perhaps even you.

Loss is universal. We all experience it. On some level, almost everyone is grieving about something. We’re all missing someone.

Grief is the natural result of a real or perceived loss, and not all losses are deaths. Deep disappointments and unmet expectations are forms of loss, not to mention relational difficulties, conflicts and estrangements. Then there are moves, separations, bullying, betrayals, deceptions and rejections. Some have endured physical abuse, sexual abuse, domestic violence or parental substance abuse. Some have been victims of violent crimes. Others suffer from traumatic accidents, severe illnesses or continual physical challenges and disabilities.

We have all been personally wounded by the words and actions of others. We experience the death of friends and loved ones along the way. Life hasn’t turned out the way any of us envisioned.

Long ago a mentor of mine said, “Life is a series of losses. How we interpret and respond to these losses makes all the difference.” As we age, these losses mount and accumulate. How we handle the hits of life matters. Grief is everywhere.

Moreover, the world isn’t particularly kind to grieving hearts. Though trauma, tragedy and death are splashed across our screens, most of us don’t relish being in the presence of physical or emotional suffering. We prefer smiles. The world wants us to be happy. We seem to get rewarded for stuffing our grief and acting as if nothing happened. Though our

world is full of pain, over time most of us get the message that it’s not acceptable to hurt. As a result, many feel forced to grieve silently in isolation. gary roe In my experience as a hospice hospice chaplain and grief counselor, grieving souls often feel misunderstood, rejected and alone.

Chances are you know someone who is hurting from a loss of some kind. You can make more of a difference than you realize.

How? Here are three suggestions.

1. Pay attention.

Intentionally notice the people around you. Attempt to lay aside your own agenda and connect with them, even if only for a moment. As much as possible, let your “How are you?” greeting be sincere and genuine. Watch. Notice.

Observe.

As you begin to see others, their hearts will most likely respond. Some will begin to feel safe, and their souls will breathe a sigh of relief.

2. Listen

Don’t attempt to fix it. You can’t. Don’t correct them. Their emotions are real.

Don’t try to make them feel better with words. You won’t be able to. Instead, be quiet. Resist the temptation to fill the air with words and platitudes. Set judgment aside. Tune in. Listen.

Over the past three decades of interacting with hurting, grieving people, I’ve discovered there are things we tend to say (mainly because we’ve heard them said) that are not helpful to someone experiencing loss. Below are three of the biggest offenders. n Anything that begins with, “At least...”

“At least they’re not suffering anymore.” “At least they’re in a better place.” “At least you had them for so long.” “At least you had a wonderful marriage.” Though these statements might be true, they are not beneficial to

a grieving soul. Words like these end up belittling their loss and making light of their pain. n “I know how you feel.”

No, we don’t. It’s their life and their loss. Every heart and soul are different. Just as each person, loss, and relationship is unique, their grief will be as well. n “I’m here for you. You can count on me.”

Frankly, this is a promise we can’t keep. We’re human. We have our own lives and responsibilities. We’re not with them all the time, and we’re not allpowerful either. Statements like this set a grieving heart up for disappointment and rejection.

In the end, the best thing is usually to keep quiet. Your presence and demeanor are worth a thousand words.

Listening may be the single most important relational skill there is. When grieving hearts feel heard, they begin to feel safe. There is no healing or recovery without a sense of safety.

As we pay attention, listen, and enter the world of someone who’s hurting, our own hearts heal a little. The sense of connection is good for us too.

Compassionate interactions like this give us perspective and a deeper sense of purpose. We’re wired for relationships, and we benefit more than we realize when we take that seriously and enter another’s pain.

Our world is fast and demanding.

Grieving hearts often feel mowed down or thrown aside in the relentless quest for comfort and happiness. We can’t afford to let this happen. When grieving individuals are ignored, our own hearts end up suffering as well. We’re in this together, and we need each other desperately.

Take a moment and think about someone you know who’s hurting. Is there a way you can show up, listen, and enter their world, even for a few minutes?

The results, for both them and you, could be extraordinary.

3. Enter their world.

Be willing to stop and enter their world, even if only for a short time. Let it be about them. Resist making it about you, your feelings about their grief, or your own experiences of loss. Focus on meeting them where they are and walking with them in their stuff. Most grieving people feel alone. By entering their world, you momentarily share their

Tumeric’s curcumin: the new health fad I can’t put it off any longer. I have to write about curcumin, because it is reaching fad status.

Curcumin is the ingredient that gives turmeric its color. Research increasingly identifies health benefits of curcumin.

Actually, anecdotal evidence has been around for a long time. People in India, known to eat a lot of turmeric in their curry, are also known to have lower-than-normal incidence of Alzheimer’s disease. Prior experiments revealed that curcumin possesses potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and can reduce ß-amyloid and plaque burden in experimental studies, but epidemiologic evidence had been lacking.

A study in 2003 of over 1,000 elderly, nondemented, Asians aged 60-93 tested the association between curry consumption level and mental function.Those who consumed curry “occasionally” and “often or very often” had significantly better mental-function test scores than did subjects who “never or rarely” consumed curry.

Experiments suggest that curcumin has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, both of which would benefit brain health. A few studies have indicated that curcumin even disrupts the formation of amyloid plaques in human brain.

However, there are also studies that show little beneficial effect.

Why the discrepancy? The most likely answer is in varying bioavailability. Curcumin is not absorbed well from the gut and it is rapidly degraded in the liver. Bioavailability can be improved drastically by taking curcumin with black pepper and with fatty food.

Now a new human study at UCLA with a bioavailable form of curcumin shows impressive positive results. This form of turmeric, Theracurmin, reduced peak blood levels in two hours and sustained high levels for the next four hours. Two other curcumin supplements reached much lower blood levels. The study used 40 randomly selected subjects aged 51to 84 in a double-blind design in which 90 mg of curcumin supplement was taken twice a day for 18 months.

All the subjects had mild memory problems, but did not have signs of Alzheimer’s disease. At the outset, subjects took tests for attentiveness, memory, mood, and depression. They were also brain-scanned for signs of plaques and tangles, the two markers for Alzheimer’s disease. The tests and brain scans were repeated every six months.

The results were remarkable. Compared to placebo controls, the curcumin group showed 28% improvement in memory function and they also T H E B R YA N - C O L L E G E S TAT I O N E A G L E

had reduced scores for depression.

The curcumin group also had brain scans with significantly less amyloid and tangles in two areas that influence anxiety, depression, and memory: the amygdala and hippocampus.

The protective effect on brain is dr. bill klem the memory medic likely due to reduced inflammation, the major culprit in brain aging. Aging well is more likely if you have a diet and supplements rich in anti-oxidants and anti-inflammatory chemicals.

It seems now that such a regimen should include bioavailable curcumin.

Commercial turmeric supplements are widely available, but many lack a pepper additive. The more effective forms tend to be expensive, but cheap versions would probably work if you added your own pepper to food that you eat at the same time as taking a supplement pill. It may be no accident that people in India eat spicy food along with their tumeric. Actually, it is a component of black pepper, piperine, that does the job. It works by reducing the destruction of cucumin in the liver. How much is needed? Apparently, about a quarter of a teaspoon of pepper. Another thing that helps is to take tumeric with food that contains fat, which when digested can partially bypass the liver. In India, their curry spices are prepared with fat and black pepper.

What about other peppers, like jalapeños? I don’t know if they help or not. Chili peppers have capsaicin, which is up to 100 times more potent than black pepper in producing a burning sensation, but we don’t know if the burning effect has anything to do with curcumin availability. Chili peppers do contain piperine. It is not known if the combination of capsaicin and piperine would have additive effects on curcumin blood levels.

I hope somebody tests jalapeños for effect on curcumin bioavailability. I sure like my nachos.

April 25, 1969. The Woman’s Club members had been working all year to plan for the first House and Garden Tour, not knowing if it would be the one and only tour, or whether it would be the beginning of a new tradition. Homes were selected, preparations had been made, and now all that awaited the excited ladies was to welcome guests.

That year, the event was called the House and Garden Pilgrimage. The Club President who led the members through this brave experiment was the late Kitty Prescott. Just like today, the homes were elegant and distinctive, and the visitors had a wonderful time at the first tour. In fact, it was such a success that the Woman’s Club is now preparing for their 50th House and Garden Tour this year.

The tour will take place on Wednesday, April 11, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

This year’s homes are: the Davis home, 724 South Rosemary Drive in Bryan; the French home, 4711 Miramont Circle in Bryan; and the Peel home, 907 Grand Oaks Circle in College Station. The three homes are beautiful, and each one reflects the personalities of its homeowners.

In honor of their 50th year, the 2018 theme will be “Fifty and Fabulous.”

The home of Cletus and Elizabeth Davis (better known to all as “Cowboy” and “Bets”) at 724 S. Rosemary Drive in Bryan, is known to all their friends and family as the “Rosemary Inn.” Bets says they seem to always

The architectural style is a traditional “sophisticated farm house.” The exterior is composed of hardy plank and antique red brick. The Davises wanted their house to look as if it belonged in the historic neighborhood and to keep the integrity of the 1935 Beverly Estates development. The architect was Jeff Griffis from Houston, and the builder was Keith Ellis, Ellis Construction Co., of Bryan.

The French country exterior of the home of Randy and Cheryl French, 4711 Miramont Circle in Miramont, welcomes you immediately with its beautifully terraced front yard, brick retaining walls featuring outdoor lighting, a Zen circular fountain, gas coach lights, and a circular drive with brick inlaid in a herringbone pattern.

The French Home designer Karen McGown Loehr to serve as construction liaison and interior designer for the project, which was completed in November 2017, just in time for the couple’s first Christmas party on December 1.

The home of William “Bill” Peel at 907 Grand Oaks Circle in College Station is part of a 23 unit gated community and was constructed in 1999. All of the houses in the community are of brick construction with a homogenous architectural style that is strictly maintained by the homeowners’ association. However, once you enter the front door of the Peel home, you’ll know that he and decorator Joshua Ortiz of Ambrose Furniture Works have turned this into a place that is uniquely his own. It is truly an expression of who he is and the many interests and talents he has.

Tickets to tour all three homes are $15 and can be purchased on the day of the event at any of the homes.

Three questions about adult caregiving A decision to take care of a family member who needs help is difficult on many levels. There is the compassion driven by wanting to do the right thing.

Then there are realities of life. This combination can make “the right thing to do” tough to discern.

According to the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College, adults who provide care to their aging parents spend an average of 77 hours per month doing so. That’s equivalent to almost two weeks of full-time work every month! In addition to being a considerable time commitment, adult caregiving can also carry significant financial costs.

Consider Liz, age 55, whose 85-yearold mother just had a stroke. Mom wants to continue living at home but cannot do it without daily help.

Liz is a manager with a $65,000 salary.

Liz thinks that hiring a caregiver would be too expensive. She could adjust her working schedule (such as going into the office late or leaving early) to reduce her hours if her employer agreed. She could reduce her hours by half to part-time status, although that would require she give up her management responsibilities and her health insurance. Both paths would mean lower earnings and fewer opportunities for promotion. Finally, there is the option of leaving her job altogether and becoming a full-time caregiver.

Let’s say Liz decides to quit her job. If Mom needs care for three years, Liz will have lost nearly $202,000 in salary (the calculation assumes a modest 3.5 percent annual raise). As high as that number is, it’s just the beginning of calculating the full cost of the decision. Liz will lose her employer-covered health insurance, the opportunity to make contributions to the 401(k) or other retirement plan, and the partial matching contributions from her employer. Liz will also be reporting no taxable earnings for three years, so her Social Security benefits will be affected (unless she is able to work longer). Most people don’t do this math before making the decision.

What should you think about as you consider your responsibility towards family members who need care?

First, define their needs.

Your aging parents may need help in a variety of ways. One way to think about those needs is by breaking them down into categories. n Skilled nursing care, such as complex wound dressing, tube feeding, or monitoring the health status of a patient whose condition is unstable. n Physical therapy, which includes massage, heat treatment and supervised exercise. n Help with activities of daily living (or ADLs) which include bathing, dressing, toileting, transferring, continence and feeding; n Other activities that are critical for independent living, including grocery shopping, food preparation, managing finance and driving to and from medical appointments; n Quality time with human companionship.

Understand the financial consequences of your decision.

No matter how you structure the solution, it will have a financial cost.

Take the time to study and understand the relevant insurance policies (such as health insurance, Medicare, long-term care, policy loans on cash value plans, and accelerated death benefits in term life insurance policies). Know what resources are available. Think carefully about your own financial future before you offer your reserves and savings.

Check your care budget with an elder planning CPA. Then make appropriate edits and be sure that all family members and caregivers understand the

overall care budget. Those in the role of the primary caregiver might think it best to just pick up a new bottle of supplements or pay for a walker when one is needed. However, those are real expenses that can add up to tens of thousands of dollars and cut into your ability to save for emergencies and retirement.

Finally, consult with the elder planning CPA to match identified income sources with the care budget needs to meet both the costs and the deadlines for the spending needs.

This is a challenging question. “I can do it all myself !” might look like an easy answer, but it’s rarely the best course of action. Instead, consider meeting the needs via a “basket” approach. Perhaps a trusted adult caregiver can assist with ADLs, while your brother drives Mom to medical appointments, and you step in to help with grocery shopping, food preparation and managing the finances.

If the family decides that one person should leave his or her job and act as a primary caregiver, consider setting up an independent contractor arrangement and having the family pay that person.

Managing neck pain and headaches Q: Dr. Bradway, can you talk about neck pain and headache problems? I’m 55 years old, a professional with a high level job. I manage people and make high level decisions. I work behind a desk, meet and greet clients and travel for business several times a year.

There are times where my neck and headache pain gets so bad that all I can do is take pain medicine and pray it goes away. I take pain medicine weekly and have had trigger point injections from my physician.

The injections have helped but it is only temporary.

I have an important job with lots of things going on both in and outside of work. When my neck pain gets real bad I get horrible headaches. I have adjusted my desk and purchased a new chair. I exercise a couple of days a week but probably not enough. Why is my neck and headache pain so bad at times - is there something more natural that can help me get rid of my neck and headache pain? I don’t want to keep taking pain medications or injections. I need a better solution.

Neck pain in your job description can be due to long work hours and high stress. I’m not trying to isolate women but they are 3-4 times more likely to have neck pain and headache problems due to increased stress from home and their professional job. It’s not unusual to have both a neck and headache problem at the same time.

Neck pain for any short or long period of time can be very stressful and debilitating. Research tells us that 40 percent of individuals with neck pain never fully recover. Why? I have read that 60 percent of all individuals with whiplash injuries fully recover four months after their accident. Neck and headache pain problems require a hands-on evaluation approach to determine what is going on, with surrounding soft tissue and joints, and why your pain is not improving. Painful soft tissue structures (the muscle system) can be over-looked or never investigated by your primary care provider or a physician specialist. This type of hands-off approach can lead to prolonged care, over-used diagnostics imaging, and unwanted use of more pain medications and injections.

What are causes for neck pain?

n Muscle tightness both in the upper back and neck area n Pinching nerves from the cervical vertebrae (Cervical Radiculopathy can be resolved without surgery or long-term pain medications) n Joint pain (facets, vertebral joints, prolong head and neck positions) n Support of head and neck (This happens as we get T H E B R YA N - C O L L E G E S TAT I O N E A G L E

older in life. Our neck muscles become weak – the bowling ball gets really heavy, causing neck pain.) n Posture (a professional conundrum on how you should sit, stand, tilt the head right or leon bradway left) physical therapy n Stress (a real downer that has to be addressed with positive proactive solutions) n Motor vehicle accidents n Sports injuries

Headaches

Did you know that approximately 90 percent of all headaches including migraines are called tension-type headaches? The cause(s) for headaches can result from many different daily activities but are not limited to poor posture, forward neck flexion, typing, studying, driving long hours in a car, carrying heavy objects or briefcases on your shoulders or falling asleep in a chair with your head bent forward. Headache pains can occur around the eyes, front of your head, temporal areas and even in the back of your head. Headache tension can even cause jaw pain.

When should you ask to see a physical therapist for neck and headache pain?

If you are having constant neck pain for greater than 7-10 days you need to see your family physician.

If you are having more than 2-3 headaches every week, then you need to see your family physician to rule-out something more serious. Request from your physician a referral to a pain management physical therapist as your next level of care. A physical therapist can improve your chances of getting better by 80 percent.

Approximately 90 percent of headache problems come from a tension stressed muscle system. The muscle system is intimately intertwined with our nervous system that reports to the brain that there is a pain problem. Fatigued, injured, and overworked muscles and joints have to be identified to begin the healing process for long-term relief and pain free days. A physical therapist will get to the root cause of you pain problem.

Here are my suggestions on how you can get 80 percent relief of your pain problem(s).

See your family physician, and request a referral to your physical therapist who understands and specializes in pain especially if you have had

persistent pain greater than 3 months.

You need a thorough hands-on evaluation approach for movements and soft tissue restrictions, postural faults, guarding to uncover your real pain problem(s).
