Dates and birthdays to remember for financial fitness

Think quick! What’s the most important age to remember for retirement?

Sixty-five, isn’t it?

Well, not exactly. If your goal is to have a peaceful and financially secure retirement, you will have to remember more than just one date. Eight, to be exact. Here they are, in order.

Do not miss these dates Age 50 – If you have a 401(k), 403(b) or similar plan at TracY Stewart work, you can begin Financial Literacy to make catch up contributions. That means you can tuck away an additional $6,000 per year into your 401(k) and $1,000 into your IRA during 2017. Whether you have skimped on the contributions during your working career or not, this is a fantastic opportunity to boost your retirement savings and optimize your taxes. Remember that the amount of the permissible catch-up contribution can change, so be sure to check the limit every year.

Age 55 – Early withdrawals from the 401(k) plans become available penalty-free if you choose to retire now.

The key here is that you must have left the employment of the company that sponsors your retirement plan.

If that is the case for you, be sure to investigate your options for healthcare insurance. Some companies offer a group insurance plan for retirees, but most don’t. Research your costs under extended COBRA coverage, or purchase your own insurance policy that will bridge the gap between employee-covered healthcare insurance and Medicare.

Age 59 ½ – Normal withdrawals from the 401(k) account and the IRA become available without penalty.

Remember that those withdrawals are subject to income tax.

Age 62 – Earliest age to begin taking Social Security payments. Keep in mind that if you opt to do this, your benefit amount will be lower than it would have been had you waited until your full retirement age. If you continue to work (whether full-time or part-time), your benefits may be suspended or reduced until you reach full retirement age.

Age 65 – Sign up for Medicare. In fact, it is best to do this three months before your big birthday to ensure that benefits can begin right at 65. Be sure not to miss this deadline. If you do not sign up on time, you risk getting a permanent increase to your premiums.

This is also a good time to look at getting a Medigap policy to help you cover copayments and deductibles that are not paid for by Medicare.

Age 66-67 – Full retirement age for Social Security benefits depends on your birth year. For those born between 1943 and 1954, 66 is the magic number. It increases gradually in monthly increments, and for those born in 1960 the full retirement age is 67. Remember that if you opt to delay the start of the Social Security benefits, they will continue to increase for every year you wait.

Age 70 – Social Security benefits stop increasing, so there is no more financial incentive to delay the start of payments.

Age 70 ½ – Required minimum distributions kick in for 401(k), IRA and other retirement accounts. If you are still working, you will no longer get a tax break for making contributions.

Here is what this means for you What if your handy planner does not go out to your 70th birthday?

We all have full lives, which means that sometimes we struggle to recall what we had for breakfast yesterday or where we left those glasses. Therefore, we need tools to help us remember these important dates. I recommend making a checklist to keep with your important documents and creating a routine that encourages you to look at the list every year as you get closer to these important dates. Perhaps you can

even make it a part of your birthday celebration! Alternatively, New Year’s Day or some other holiday can be chosen as a time to consult the list. All that matters is that you remember to do this consistently.

Notice that not all of these dates spell a need for immediate action. In most cases, they are important because you now have options that weren’t previously available.

For example, 65 is an “actionable” birthday: file for your Medicare benefits now, or pay the price for missing the deadline for years to come.

Other dates can be simply treated as reminders, and your personal financial situation might allow you to take no action at all. An example would be the option to file early for the Social Security benefits. You can do it if you need the security of the monthly payment, but if you are able to wait until your full retirement age or beyond, you will be rewarded with a larger monthly payment.

Finally, always consult with a CPA or a financial planner because many of these decisions are irreversible and have long-lasting financial consequences.

Memories shape who we have become

Long-term storage of a given memory is held in the synaptic junctions among neurons. Synapses can grow or shrivel, depending on new experiences and on our health.

A main reason that we forget much of our childhood is that some synapses have been pruned and others proliferated as Dr. Bill Klemm we grew and had new The Memory Medic experiences. Even the memories we can still recall from childhood have a high probability of having some corruption. Yet we know that childhood experiences shape our personality, emotions and thinking as adults. So the question arises, “How can childhood

experiences influence who we are as an adult if the memories are not remembered?”

Just because we can’t consciously remember a memory does not prove its absence. There is a whole class of memories that are implicit. That is, the memory is there, and your brain accesses it for unconscious processing.

Examples of implicit memories include well-learned movements such as touch typing, piano playing, and multiple kinds of athletic movements. When these movement memories were being formed, the learner had to pay conscious attention to memorizing the required movements. But with much practice, the memory of how to do the task was driven underground and automated. The memory is still there and influencing who you are as a

person.

Though seldom discussed in this context, heuristic memory exemplifies another kind of implicit memory. Here I refer to an unconscious memory of innovative problem solving or learning skills that expedite the process of finding success. This is the kind of unconscious memory that experts have for their respective areas of expertise.

Another form of implicit learning is conditioning, which gives rise to automated personal preferences and biases that form a large part of who we are. Pavlovian conditioning develops from repeated pairing of a cue and a mental or behavioral response. Some panic attacks and PTSD episodes may be triggered when a conditioned cue arises, yet the patient may not

recognize the cause. Another kind of implicit conditioning develops where the learner unconsciously learns the association between a cue and an attitude or behavior that is rewarded. This is the so-called operant conditioning used to train work animals. B. F. Skinner and his followers touted operant conditioning as the cure for social dysfunction. Government or some ruling elites can change bad behavior by raising a generation of children properly conditioned for prosocial behavior.

Lessons from those at the end of their lives, the role that hospice plays When I’m introduced to someone and they ask me what I do, I always wonder how to respond. The simple answer is, “I work as a hospice chaplain and grief counselor.”

That statement means anywhere from nothing to a lot, depending on the listener’s knowledge of and personal experience with hospice. As a result, I’m trying to think of an alternate, more descriptive way to explain my vocation.

Here are some possibilities: “I have the honor of caring for people at the end of their lives.”

“I’m part of a team that helps the terminally ill live as long as possible, as well as possible.”

“I get to spend time with people facing death and be blessed by Gary Roe them.”

Hospice “I’m part of a team that shows compassion and love to people during their final months.”

All these in some way describe my work and how I feel about it. I’m part of an incredible team, and it’s an honor to work alongside our doctors, nurses, aides, social workers and volunteers. We strive to give patients the greatest quality of life possible, compassionately supporting each person to the best of our ability.

Ultimately, my work is about love. It is truly a privilege.

Wisdom from those at the end of life As a hospice chaplain, I do my share of talking, but I do far more listening.

I’m frequently surprised and blessed by what flows from the mouths and hearts of the people I visit. I’m continually inspired by patients’ courage, attitude and sense of humor.

Here’s a sampling of some memorable statements over the past year: “Am I ready? Yes. Do I want to go?

patients and family members breathe a huge sigh of relief. What and who they need is now a phone call away.

I walk away from most visits encouraged, humbled and with greater perspective. Much of life depends on how we see things – how clean and clear our life lenses are at any given moment. Unknowingly, my patients are always cleaning my glasses, helping me see myself, others and life more clearly.

I’m honored I get to do this.

Spending time with those on the edge of this life has enriched my heart and soul in innumerable ways.

Misconception No. 2: Hospice is about helping people die. They don’t treat anything.

Some think hospice is synonymous with discontinuing all medications, treatments and interventions.

Foremost, hospice is about comfort.

Although it is true that hospice doesn’t provide curative treatment for the actual terminal disease, we will treat anything related to the patient’s comfort. This includes pain, nausea, wounds, infections, colds, flu, etc. Our goal is to keep the patient comfortable, so they can enjoy the greatest quality of life for as long as possible.

End of life issues can be challenging and difficult. When a loved one declines, our hearts shake and our minds hurriedly search for answers.

Sifting through the options and coming up with the best scenario can be overwhelming. Our vision becomes murky. Many things can cloud our life lenses.

Don’t try to go this alone. Talk to those who have been there. Listen to the voices you know and trust. Seek new information and suggestions as necessary. Be kind to yourself along the way. Keep your lenses as clean and clear as possible.

As for life, we have today. Right now.

This moment. Let’s live it well.

I hear the following three misconceptions a lot. These can cloud our lenses as we look at the end of life issues and mess with our decision-making. Allow me to attempt to clean our glasses a bit.

Interactive Caregiving Makes Every Moment Matter

Misconception No. 1: Hospice is all about death.

Since hospice is about serving people at the end of life, this is a natural misconception. Hospice, however, is far more about life than it is about death. Research shows that the sooner a patient comes on hospice, the longer they live - with a greater quality of life. No need to call 911, head to the ER, or try to get that urgent appointment. Our team comes to them -- nurses, doctors, aides, social workers, chaplains and volunteers. Not every patient wants or needs all this support, but we’re here and available to them 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Veterans Day facts and figures

Metro Creative Connection Veterans Day, once known as Armistice Day, was first celebrated on Nov. 11, 1919, the anniversary of the end of World War I. In 1928, the United States Congress passed a resolution for Armistice Day to be an annual observation, and by 1938, the day became a national holiday.

Differing from Memorial Day in May, Armistice Day, which would be renamed Veterans Day in 1954 under President Dwight Eisenhower, pays tribute to veterans who survived various wars. Memorial Day commemorates those veterans who lost their lives.

Americans celebrate Veterans Day, while residents of Great Britain, Canada and Australia celebrate Remembrance Day. Those who want

to learn more about Veterans Day can consider the following facts.

• According to the American Community Survey, there were 19.3 million military veterans in the United States in 2014. Of those, 1.6 million were female.

• California, Texas and Florida comprise the states with the largest number of veterans, equalling one million or more.

• Veterans consist of people who served in the military. This includes the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, and Coast Guard. Veterans serve in times of war and peace.

• The word “veteran” comes from the Old English language and means “old, experienced soldier.” The first use of the word was documented in 1789.

• Although many veterans are working, and the average annual income of male veterans is $37,000, some veterans continue to be unemployed. According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the overall unemployment rate for veterans rose to 7.6 percent in January 2013. The unemployment rate of post9/11 veterans or those who participated in the Gulf War reached 6.2 percent.

• Upon retiring or being discharged, veterans may need help acclimating to life outside the military. The Department of Veterans Affairs says about 30 percent of Vietnam War veterans have been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD. • Between 1971 and 1977, Veterans Day was celebrated on the fourth

Monday in October. It was changed back to its original date, November 11, in 1975 when President Gerald Ford signed bill S.331 into law. The change went into effect beginning in 1978.

• An American soldier was buried at the national cemetery in Arlington on November 11, 1921. His identity was unknown, and the gravesite is known as the “Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.” A guard from the Society of the Honor Guard stands watch over the grave each year on Veterans Day, and the president or another high-ranking member of the government places a wreath on the grave.

Veterans Day occurs each year on Nov. 11, marking the end of World War I. The day has evolved into a celebration and remembrance of the heroism of America’s brave soldiers.

How to help veterans in need

for hospitals to operate at optimal capacity.

• Help a neighbor.

Unfortunately, many veterans return home with injuries that affect their ability to make it through a typical day without assistance. Disabled veterans may be unable to do their own grocery shopping or maintain their homes. If a neighbor or nearby veteran is facing such hurdles, offer to do his or her shopping or mow his or her lawn. Such tasks won’t take much time but can make a world of difference to veterans.

• Offer professional services free of charge. Professionals who want to help veterans can offer their services free of charge. Accountants can offer to prepare veterans’ tax returns for free, while attorneys can provide legal advice to veterans who need it.

Contractors can help disabled veterans by offering to make alterations to their homes for free or at cost.

• Employ social media to help local veterans. Many people who want to help local veterans might not be able to do so more than one day per week.

But some veterans may require daily assistance. Men and women can start a locally-based Facebook group for fellow members of their community who want to pitch in to help local veterans.

Such a group can make it easier to share information and arrange help for veterans in need.

Many veterans return home from

serving overseas in need of help.

Offering such help can improve veterans’ lives while letting them know their efforts and sacrifices are appreciated.

Metro Creative Connection Millions of men and women serve in the military and make the sacrifices that such service requires. Risking their lives to serve their countries, veterans sometimes endure mental and physical trauma, returning home to face uphill battles as they deal with their injuries.

Many veterans in need are not just in need of medical attention. Learning that their efforts and sacrifices are recognized and appreciated by the ordinary citizens they protect can make a world of difference to veterans as they recover from their injuries.

Men, women and children who want to help veterans in need can do so in various ways.

• Visit a veterans hospital.

Contact a local veterans’ hospital to inquire about their volunteer programs. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs notes that each year more than 75,000 volunteers spend more than 11 million hours in service to America’s veterans.

Visiting veterans at the hospital to hear their stories can lift their spirits and aid in their recoveries. In addition, veterans’ hospitals may have volunteer opportunities that make it easier

Choices that increase cancer risk, things to help during treatment Cancer affects over 1 million people a year. In fact, 77 percent of all cancers are in 55 and older adults. We are living longer today and thus the possibility of getting cancer as we age increases.

Three of the leading causes for cancer are within our control and thus we can greatly affect our chances of getting cancer by the choices we make, particularly in our diet and daily activity.

Individuals, like yourself, who have undergone cancer treatments can suffer from fatigue and overall physical weakness. Often described as a sudden onset, overwhelming exhaustion/lack of energy and no great relief or improvement from rest.

Cancer treatments such as radiation, surgeries and chemotherapy can cause side effects that interrupt the body’s natural physiological and immune processes that will create fatigue and loss of energy.

The fatigue and muscle weakness you are feeling stem from cancer treatment side effects that include body tissue dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, acid-base disturbances,

memories proves that we have no control over who we become. They say we cannot freely make decisions and choices. Free will is an illusion.

But they overlook the fact that we often choose what experiences to have and how to interpret them. Are these choices also pre-determined by our biology and our past?

Well, we know that experience produces major effects on our biology, including altering gene expression in both body and brain tissue. A recent study reveals that every neuron has different DNA because life experience T H E B R YA N - C O L L E G E S TAT I O N E A G L E

hypoxia, neurologic toxicities, cardiac abnormalities and dizziness, which all contribute to complete and constant tiredness.

Exercise is a good nonpharmacologic intervention that can help minimize pre and post side effects from cancer treatments. A 2004 research study looked at exercise as an intervention for fatigue stemming from cancer treatments and found that as one increased with exercise, fatigue decreased.

The study looked at home-based aerobic and walking programs that proved effective for cancer related fatigue. The training exercise guidelines from this study included: 1) frequency of exercise – three to five days per week, 2) Intensity: 50 to 70 percent of maximum heart rate or 1113 on a Borg Perceived exertional scale, and 3) Duration: Each session lasted 15 to 30 minutes.

It is also beneficial to begin a light resistance program two days a week.

The resistance program can be as simple as a few exercises using tubing, light hand weights or light settings on weight machines (make certain someone who has expertise,shows you how to properly use these tools).

Other ways to stretch, strengthen and exercise include yoga, water aerobics, and Tai Chi. I know several cancer patients who have benefited greatly from gentle, restorative yoga, both in mind and body. Make sure the instructor understands your condition and works with you gently.

Exercise and resistance programs can begin before, during and after cancer treatment(s). It’s important to note that exercise can be important to you during your cancer treatments.

However, it is also important during cancer treatment that your blood levels are adequate. Talk to your oncologist to ensure blood levels are adequate to safe exercise.

Remember with exercise duration, frequency and intensity can all be modified at a safe level. Resting is not always the correct solution to prolong fatigue. For example, do not exercise when your white blood count is below 3000/mm, or your hemoglobin is less than 10g/dl or your blood platelets are less than 25,000 mm. Further, do not exercise on the day of your chemotherapy treatment or radiation.

As a physical therapist, I encourage you to consider an exercise program developed in collaboration with your therapist, oncologist and you. Of course your care and progress has to be monitored to ensure safety and more importantly, to ensure you gain the benefits of the exercise program to help combat fatigue and muscle weakness. A physical therapist has the clinical expertise to monitor blood levels and provide the correct exercise prescription in conjunction with your oncologist approval.

In addition to exercise, there are some nutritional changes or additions you might consider when undergoing cancer treatments. Again, you will want to discuss this with your physician before making any dietary

changes that could affect or interact with your treatment.

1. Chemo nausea – Ginger 2. Radiation - spirulina (blue green algae), wheatgrass 3. Breast cancer: lemon, rosemary, pomello 4. Inhibits the growth of cancer cells/tumors – fenugreek, cucumber (skin – use organic), pineapple, wheatgrass, turmeric, turnips, flaxseed and garlic 5. Stimulates enzymes to fight cancer growth – cloves, garlic

has altered methylation, which in turn influences the expression of genes.

However, much of our life experience resides in conscious realization.

We think consciously with the neurons that produce consciousness.

Those neurons connect extensively with the unconscious systems of the brain. Thus, how could consciousness fail to influence subconscious operations? In short, the neural activity of conscious thinking writes programs into unconscious neural circuitry.

The issue of whether humans have free will has enormous implications for social interactions, the criminal justice system and for religion. Socially, without free will we cannot change the

way we interact with people. If so, how do we explain the value of life coaches, psychological counseling, and business personnel management studies? The penalties of criminal justice could be viewed as unjust if criminals have no control.

But even critics of free will admit that criminals may have to be locked up to protect the public. In the case of religion, two religions, Islam and Christianity, have clerics and prophets who assert that human choices and behavior are predestined. However, such narrow interpretation is overwhelmed by the main theme of their scriptures — repeated exhortations to seek faith and righteousness. The inescapable

implication is that we have the freedom to make such choices.

So, sorry to say, we can’t duck personal responsibility by the excuse that we are just biological robots.

Biology and memories do matter, but humans can influence both, especially memories. We create new memories by our free choices of what to experience.

We can change our memories by fresh interpretation. In the process, we change ourselves.

I personally believe it is important to consume as much fresh, local, organic produce as possible when undergoing cancer treatments. The less food processing and the closer to its natural state, the better.

So look for fresh wheatgrass, fresh ginger, fresh turmeric root, fresh herbs, and so on. Make certain all produce is thoroughly cleaned.

You do not have to suffer from body fatigue and muscle weakness while undergoing cancer treatments.

Talk to your physical therapist or ask your physician about curbing fatigue and muscle weakness that involves prescribed activities and not rest.

The Eagle Several Veterans Day events honoring those who serve will be held in Bryan-College Station in November, including the Brazos Valley Veterans Memorial Board’s annual ceremony and several school events.

Additional veterans-related events will be held next month, as well. Veterans Day, on Nov. 11, is a day of remembrance of all United States military veterans, past and present. One local event celebrating the holiday is the annual Veterans Day Ceremony hosted by the Brazos Valley Veterans Memorial Board of Directors.

The ceremony will be held at 5:30 p.m. Nov. 10 in the Louis L. Adam Memorial Plaza of Veterans Park and Athletic Complex, at 3101 Harvey Road in College Station.

Bob Foley, who has served as the Texas A&M University Career Center’s assistant director for the past eight years, will serve as the event’s keynote speaker. As part of his job, Foley focuses on advising engineering students, students in federal government and veterans.

Foley said he was a member of the A&M Corps of Cadets, before graduating from A&M in 1969. After graduation Foley served five years in the U.S. Air Force, primarily in the Strategic Air Command (SAC) as a B52 pilot. His time in the Air Force included more than two years in southeast Asia during and immediately after the Vietnam War. • Wreaths Across America will hold a wreath-laying ceremony at 11 a.m. on Dec. 16 in the Aggie Field of Honor, to honor local, fallen veterans.

The wreaths are made from balsam fir and stand for one of seven services: Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard, Merchant Marine and POW/ MIA. The wreaths are sponsored by public donations and are $15 each and will be placed at Aggie Field of Honor, College Station, Bryan City and Oakwood Cemeteries. The deadline to purchase a wreath for the 2017 holiday ceremony is Nov. 28. Wreaths can be purchased at facebook.com/ WAACSAFOH.
