or two magical Saturdays would do wonders, especially after a rocky offseason. This year’s defense has a playmaker in cornerback Deshazor Everett, but the rest of the unit was so bad a year ago you couldn’t tell. That has the potential to change. The other youngsters who played last season will have to live up to their potential, coupled with solid play by the veterans — especially in the secondary. A&M’s offense, even having to replace a trio of first-round draft picks and breaking in a new quarterback, figures to be able to score points in bunches. If the defense can take a significant step forward, it will be a fun year, and excitement for 2015 will continue to build. But if the defense fails and the offense slips — even just slightly — there will be cause for concern. A 7-5 season with A&M being competitive in the losses will do the trick. That’s realistic. It will be a challenge for A&M to come out with one victory from road games at South Carolina, Mississippi State, Alabama and Auburn. And A&M has to do a better job of winning at home. If the Aggies can be unbeaten at home heading into the Thanksgiving game against LSU, that would be an improvement on the first two seasons in the SEC. Do that, and either beat LSU or grab a league victory on the road, and this team will have successfully kept the program moving forward.

Offseason creates chances for young players on defense

he magnet board Texas A&M defensive coordinator Mark Snyder uses for a depth chart figures to get adjusted throughout the 2014 season, with all the young talent wanting to play a part in reversing the Aggies’ defensive fortunes. Snyder definitely didn’t figure the board would get so much attention before the team reconvened for practice in August. Two starters — defensive tackle Isaiah Golden and linebacker Darian Claiborne — were dismissed from the team in early June after being charged with aggravated robbery. Defensive end Gavin Stansbury left the team for personal reasons. And Victor Davis, a backup defensive back, was arrested for shoplifting. “It is what it is,” Snyder said in a recent interview. “We’re in college football. It’s not the NFL. It’s part of what we deal with as college coaches and is part of the college game.” The dismissals and departures only magnify A&M’s biggest weakness last season, a defense that allowed 6.7 yards a play in Southeastern Conference games and 36.5 points a game — last in the conference. Snyder had to play a lot of young players in 2013 and it showed, but the freshmen gained experience. Trouble is, two of those players were Golden and Claiborne. So Snyder will find himself in a similar situation this season. “It gives other guys opportunities to step up and play,” Snyder said. “[The young

players] were going to be competing anyway, so it’s an opportunity for some guys to step up and show us what they can do.” The secondary is the only unit with a good deal of experience. Four starters return, led by All-SEC preseason selection Deshazor Everett. “He’s played a lot of football in a very good league,” Snyder said. “He’s playing with a lot of confidence. We have to make sure we put him in positions to make sure that confidence level stays up.” Of the returning players, Everett was second on the team in interceptions with two and fourth in tackles with 73. Everett has played every position in the secondary, and will start the season at cornerback. “He’s so versatile, that’s what makes Deshazor really good,” Snyder said. “He could play nickel, corner or safety. That’s going to bode really well for him in the future.”

Safety Howard Matthews has played in 38 games overall and started 20. He led the team in interceptions with three and was second in tackles with 90 last season, both tops among returnees. De’Vante Harris and Floyd Raven round out a secondary that — if the young front seven can make strides — should be a strength because of its experience. “You have to put Clay Honeycutt in that boat too,” Snyder said of the defensive backs crew. “They need to play within the system and have career-best years. That’s what seniors are supposed to do, have career-best years.” The defensive line and linebackers have little experience, and most of it belongs to junior Julien Obioha at defensive end. Others got their feet wet last season but are still fairly green when it comes to snaps in SEC games. Daeshon Hall on the line and Shaan Washington and Jordan Mastrogiovanni at linebacker will be counted on to lead on the field,
as well as raise a low sack total and help bring down a yards-per-carry of 5.4 yards. “DaeDae’s a good football player,” Snyder said. “He’s got some natural ability, got some rubber band in his body and is up to 260. He’s over the hurdle of looking around at the big stadiums and big crowds and those type of things. And we have a guy like Myles Garrett, who’s going to come in and give DaeDae a blow.” Snyder compared Mastrogiovanni to Jonathan Stewart, the starting linebacker in Snyder’s first year, in that he is a smart guy that didn’t play much and then stepped up. His play and attitude had a big effect on the rest of the defense. And a player that may have benefited from the ever-changing depth chart is TCU transfer A.J. Hillard. “I don’t want to put a lot of pressure on him, but in the absence of Darian, A.J.’s role just increased quite a bit,” Snyder said. “He had a great spring, finished really well. He’s a guy we need to step up.”

LAST SEASON An 11-2 mark would satisfy most, but Alabama is not most. The Crimson Tide lost the opportunity at three straight national titles when they watched Auburn’s Chris Davis return a lastsecond Bama field goal attempt from the end zone for a 34-28 win and a berth in the SEC title game. Bama then went on to surprisingly lose to Oklahoma 45-31 in the Sugar Bowl.
aving lost our last two games last year, I think it’s a little bit different mindset with our players. We have to reestablish our identity as a team at Alabama. It’s going to take every player to have a tremendous amount of buy-in for us to be able to do that.

It should be more of the same for the Crimson Tide, with nothing less than a national title being considered a good year. Bama has reloaded, as it always does. LAST SEASON An about-face style of play under Bret Bielema didn’t bring about many victories (3-9, 0-8). But the faithful overunderstand it is not an over night project after the Bobby Petrino saga. The Hogs went from a wide-open passing game to a Big 10 traditional ground attack. The result was a QB that completed less than 50 percent of his passes and a tailback, Alex Collins, rushwho led all freshmen in rush ing with 1,026 yards.
didn’t expect to go 3-9. On the same account, I didn’t expect to win [the SEC] my first year. What I’ve done is sustain what I believe helps you win. [And] understand the only way to change the results of a 3-9 season is to change what you’re doing.

A couple of SEC wins would be phenomenal and a bowl berth miraculous in Bielema’s second season. The Hogs are probably better than their record was and will be, but being in the SEC West is not ideal for posting Ws. Bielema succeeded at Wisconsin with a program that had done well before he got there. Gaining ground on the big boys of the SEC is a different story.

Marshall is a front-runner for the Heisman and the O-line is one of the best with four returning starters. Defense is where the Tigers can improve. LAST SEASON An 8-5 overall mark was dampened by a 17-10 loss in the Egg Bowl to Mississippi State. The Rebels rebounded for a 25-17 win over Georgia Tech in the Music City Bowl. The Rebels were young and many of the youngsters got experience in an injury-riddled season.
hen I first arrived there, I really thought we would be going to hopefully a bowl game in year three. LAST SEASON Johnny Manziel and the Aggie offense could only outscore nine of its 13 opponents, with all four losses coming to SEC teams, two of which played for the SEC title. A&M’s defense made its opponents’ offense look like, well, A&M’s offense. The Aggies were last among SEC teams in total defense and rushing defense.
oving to the SEC is one thing, but if we had got our brains beat out like everybody thought, I don’t think recruiting would be going as well anyway if we’re in the SEC. Obviously, replacing Manziel is key. Just as important and maybe more worrisome is the defense improving, and not just a little bit. The offense lost three first-round draft picks, but there are plenty of candidates waiting for opportunities. With Gurley, Marshall and Mitchell back, the offense should run smoothly if quarterback Hutson Mason can get them the ball. The defense will be directed by former Florida State de defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt, who will have three linebackers – Ramik Wilson, Leonard Floyd and Jordan Jenkins – thought of highly enough to make preseason All-SEC teams. Another race for the East title could come down to the Georgia-South Carolina game, with both looking at Top 10 finishes.

LAST SEASON Missouri was the surprise of the SEC, or at least the East, finishing 12-2 overall and winning its division with a 7-1 mark. Loaded with veterans after an injuryplagued SEC debut, the Tigers finished in the Top 10 after beating former Big 12 foe Oklahoma State 41-31 in the Cotton Bowl. A starstudded defense was led by cornerback E.J. Gaines and pass rusher Michael Sam.

With a lot of new faces, the Tigers will look to quarterback Maty Mauk, who filled in more than admirably when James Franklin went down late last year. The Tigers will also have to depend on replacing four all-SEC players on defense and will likely have to post another plus-16 in the turnover margin to come close to repeating as division champs. LAST SEASON The Gamecocks have won 33 games in the last three seasons, including an 11-2 mark in 2013 when they finished second in the East. Senior quarterback Connor Shaw proved to be the catalyst on offense. The defense was more of a team effort than most would have thought, with defensive end Jadeveon Clowney not quite living up to his Heisman hype.
’ve also learned over the last several years when you win that bowl game, life is a lot more comfortable in the offseason. Whoever wins that bowl game, you get ranked in the Top 10. We were never in the Top 10 till the last three years. Done that every year since we started winning the bowl games. Hopefully, we can add an SEC championship.

The Gamecocks are the popular pick to win the East with three of their key games – Texas A&M, Georgia and Missouri – at home. Dylan Thompson will replace Shaw and will have the luxury of one of the best offensive lines in the country. What’s a step up from atrocious? I think the offense will drop off very little, but will look drastically different from the last two years. The Aggies will ground and pound to shorten games, Kyle Allen will show form that could make him the All-SEC quarterback in, say, 2016 if not sooner, and the Aggies will quietly build for a championship run in two years. A&M will be fortunate to go 6-6, thanks to Cupcake Parade in the nonconference. The best thing for A&M about not having Johnny Manziel will be: Fewer headlines but more focus on the team aspect. The worst thing for A&M about not having Johnny Manziel will be: Fewer headlines and much, much less national relevance, at least for a while.

This is a team built for 2016. It will take time to mature physically and mentally. The best thing for A&M about not having Johnny Manziel will be: Not being under the national microscope for every snap at Kyle Field. when he played, he was among the game’s best for two seasons. The worst thing for A&M about not having Johnny Manziel will be: Losing college football’s greatest playmaker means A&M must, to some extent, reinvent itself offensively. But when I think of A&M’s chances of success this year, it’s more of a defensive question. The Aggies must be better here. They won’t have Manziel to bail them out as he did so many times, including the bowl game. This is no longer a shootout offense. The Aggies must adjust.

Tennessee; 6. Vanderbilt; 7. Kentucky Texas A&M’s regular-season record: 7-5 Summarizing A&M’s season: Aggies will be fine moving the ball regardless of the QB. The key is the defense, which simply can’t be as bad as it was a year ago. The best thing for A&M about not having Johnny Manziel will be: There is nothing good about losing Johnny Manziel, who was a once in a generation talent. It does make everybody else on offense realize they have to step up because Johnny is not there to bail them out. The worst thing for A&M about not having Johnny Manziel will be: That there was really no way for opposing defensive coordinators to prepare for him. As my friend Gary Danielson said, “What he had you can’t coach and you can’t stop.”

What’s in a name? A look at some of the SEC’s more interesting monikers By ROB CLARK | rob.clark@theeagle.com It’s time for our annual look at some of the more unusual names on SEC rosters this season. Only the best can make our AllName Team. But before we get to all that, some observations from scouring the media guides. There’s lots of love on this year’s teams. Try Jamerson Love (Mississippi State), Shaquille Love (Kentucky) or Travonte Valentine (LSU). Not to mention the City of Love with Paris Bostick (Georgia), Paris Head (Vanderbilt) and Ed Paris (LSU). Gardening and horticulture fans — we know you’re out there — can root for Kyle Meadows (Kentucky), Billy Busch (Ole Miss), Thomas Holley (Florida), Elliott Berry (Tennessee) and three players with the last name of Flowers: Kent (Mississippi State), Kenny (Auburn) Chris Martin 4 AP photo and Trey (Arkansas).
A religious debate is always fun (and never controversial!). Be sure to invite Max Godby (Kentucky), Trey DePriest (Alabama), Elijah Staley (Mississippi State), Moral Stephens (Florida) and Edward Pope (Texas A&M). And celebrity names pop up all over. Fans of mellow singer-songwriter James Taylor will be pleased to know that there’s a player with his name at Missouri. Other famous (Misnames on SEC teams: blues legend Robert Johnson (Mis sissippi State), Coldplay singer Chris Martin (Vanderbilt) and longtime activist Jesse Jackson (Mississippi State). As we unveil this year’s top 20 names on the next page, we must bid farewell to the active players who made last year’s list. Alas, the following players are no longer eligible, according to the rules I just made up: Pig Howard (Tennessee), Chief Brown (Ole Miss), Trip Thurman (Florida), Cassanova McKinzy (Auburn), Will Sport (South Carolina), Gimel President (Auburn), Curt Maggitt (Tennessee) and Taz Zettergren (Ole Miss).

BIG SHOES TO FILL
46
By ROB CLARK | rob.clark@theeagle.com
It’s one thing for an old TV show like Bewitched to switch Darrin characters midstream (shoutout to Dick York/Sargent!). It’s quite another for Texas A&M’s next quarterback to fill the massive shoes of Johnny Manziel. But the Aggies soldier on with Kyle Allen and Kenny Hill. We took a look at other examples in sports and pop culture when a major success or personality had to be replaced. Here are 10 such situations, ranked from best to worst.

BIG SHOES TO FILL
2
Bill Murray replacing Chevy Chase on Saturday Night Live (1977): Chase was the first to bolt the original SNL crew, and Murray was more than a capable replacement. The two famously brawled when Chase returned to host, yet they were able to later film the great “cannonball!” scene together in Caddyshack.
Steve Carell replacing Ricky Gervais on The Office (2005): The never-ending narcissism of Gervais’ David Brent character was priceless, as were his bottomlip-biting and wicked dance skills. Carell’s Michael Scott added enough insecurities, inappropriate jokes and impressions to make the Americanized version of The Office a hit.
8
Jimmy Johnson replacing Tom Landry (1989): Dallas Cowboys fans still wince at the memory of Jerry Jones taking over the team and sending Landry packing. He had only taken the team to five Super Bowls, after all. But Johnson quickly led Dallas to two Super Bowl wins and set up a third. Hard to argue with those results.
Conan O’Brien replacing David Letterman (1993): Letterman bolted to CBS after getting spurned for The Tonight Show (boo), and O’Brien had a rough early transition to the Late Night seat. But he soon found his stride, and eventually earned The Tonight Show gig in 2009. Then NBC execs spurned Conan even worse than they did Dave. Kirstie Alley replacing Shelley Long on Cheers (1987): Long’s Diane Chambers was a snooty, literature-loving waitress and love interest for Ted Danson’s Sam Malone. Alley’s character Rebecca Howe was a more neurotic businesswoman. Both won Emmys for their performances, but Long’s was the more memorable character.
6
5
Danny White replacing Roger Staubach (1980): Poor Danny deserved a better fate after taking over for Captain Comeback. He led the Cowboys to three straight NFC championship games, and should’ve been in Super Bowl XVI (*fists raised in anger at Dwight Clark). White ended his career with a 67-35 record, but without the credit he deserved.
Sammy Hagar replacing David Lee Roth in Van Halen (1985): Hagar didn’t bother with coyote howls and karate kicks, and offered a steadier presence and a larger vocal range. But the songs couldn’t live up to the Roth classics like Runnin’ With the Devil and Panama. (We won’t bother with the Gary Cherone “era.”) AP photos
9
Jenilee Harrison/ Priscilla Barnes replacing Suzanne Somers on Three’s Company (1981): The ridiculous sitcom tried to replace breakout star Suzanne Somers, first with Cindy (Harrison), and then with the sharper Terri (Barnes). Neither could match Chrissy’s dingy personality and snorting laugh. But could anyone, really?
7
Mads Mikkelsen replacing Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter (2013): There were plenty of skeptics about trying to recreate Anthony Hopkins’ iconic role — thp-thp-thp-thp-thp — from Silence of the Lambs. But Mikkelsen has been a pleasant surprise in NBC’s ultra-gory television version, Hannibal. Suave, smart and one hell of a cook.
10
Dennis Franchione replacing R.C. Slocum (2002): Sorry, Aggies. A&M bumped out its all-time winningest coach, whose program was among the nation’s best in the ‘90s. His replacement lasted five years, highlighted by a boosternewsletter scandal, a waste of a star QB (Reggie McNeal) and a highly unfortunate trip to Norman in November 2003.

Mix Tape: Songs in the key of the SEC
SEC 2014
By ROB CLARK | rob.clark@theeagle.com We’ve exhausted our arsenal of “Johnny” songs. Time to move on with the new season, and that calls for a new SEC mix tape. Here are a few tunes that relate to the conference players, personalities and broadcasters.
Kyle Allen & Kenny Hill
We’re the Replacements by They Might Be Giants: The young Aggie quarterbacks have big shoes to fill (see Page 46), and so this bouncy track fits the bill. Lyrics: “Hi, we’re the replacements/Hi, we’re the replacements/Hi, we’re the replacements/And we’re playing in a rock ‘n’ roll band.”
Brent Musburger
The More You Ignore Me, The Closer I Get by Morrissey: The longtime voice of ABC’s prime time Saturday game is now the lead anchor for the SEC Network. Good gig, but a demotion. Release Angry Musburger! Lyrics: “Beware, I bear more grudges than lonely high-court judges/When you sleep I will creep into your thoughts/Like a bad debt that you can’t pay.”
Mike Slive
The Future by Prince (below): What’s next for the NCAA? Our money is on the SEC commish and his vision for any big changes ahead. Lyrics: “I’ve seen the future and it will be/I’ve seen the future and it works/If there’s life after we will see/Don’t go out like a jerk.”
Mark Snyder
Let It Go by Idina Menzel: The inescapable song is inescapable. Let’s hope Texas A&M’s defensive coordinator can move past the memories of his 2013 defense. Lyrics: “And one thought crystallizes like an icy blast/I’m never going back/The past is in the past/Let it go, let it go/ And I’ll rise like the break of dawn.”
Les Miles
You May Be Right by Billy Joel: Picture the oddball LSU coach belting this out — in between bites of grass. Lyrics: “You may be right/I may be crazy/But it just may be a lunatic you’re looking for/Turn out the light/Don’t try to save me/You may be wrong for all I know/But you may be right.”
AP photo
SEC Network
Digital Witness by St. Vincent: The hyperventilating over ESPN’s shiny new toy — and which cable outlets will provide it — has bordered on ridiculous. How can we live without something we’ve never had?!?! Lyrics: “Digital witnesses, what’s the point of even sleeping?/ If I can’t show it, if you can’t see me/What’s the point of doing anything?” AP photo
Bret Bielema
My Name Is Mud by Primus: At least it will be for the Arkansas coach if the Hogs have another 3-9 belly flop. Lyrics: “My name is Mud/Not to be confused with Bill or Jack or Pete or Dennis/My name is Mud and it’s always been.”
Will Muschamp
Sour Times by Portishead: We like to envision the embattled Florida coach as a pouty torch singer. Imagine him crooning this while draped over a grand piano. Lyrics: “Who am I, what and why?/’Cause all I have left is my memories of yesterday/Oh, these sour times/’Cause nobody loves me, it’s true.” MyAggieNation.com | A g g i e S p o r t s . c o m | T h e E a g l e | SEC 2014
