Senior Resource Wednesday, May 22, 2013 The Bryan-College Station Eagle

Welcome from RSVP-Senior Corps

T

his is the 16th year the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) and The Eagle collaborated to bring the Senior Resource Guide to our community. With easy-to-read descriptions of services, the Senior Resource Guide is designed to help you access information on available resources important to the health and well being of seniors.

promotes dignity, independence and quality of life for seniors age 60 plus in the Brazos Valley Region. The Volunteer Center is designed to connect people in the Brazos Valley with opportunities to serve. Many of the organizations you find throughout this resource guide depend upon the work of volunteers to accomplish their goals in serving people.

At the bottom of the pages, you will find the toll-free number for the Brazos Valley Area Agency on Aging and the website for the Volunteer Center of the Brazos Valley, both sponsored by the Brazos Valley Council of Governments (www.bvcog.org). The mission of the Brazos Valley Area Agency on Aging (BVAAA) is to advocate and provide a system of comprehensive and coordinated services, which

For 41 years, Brazos Valley RSVP-Senior Corps has partnered with local organizations and non-profits that utilize the skills and talents of senior volunteers age 55 and over to tackle pressing community needs. The Corporation for National and Community Service supports Senior Corps – the largest program for senior volunteers in America. It offers support and guidance for RSVP programs to focus on

meeting critical needs and documenting the outcomes of services provided by RSVP volunteers. This year the Brazos Valley RSVP-Senior Corps has made transportation for the elderly and hunger issues our two priority areas for volunteer service. If you turn to the Volunteer Opportunities section of the Senior Resource Guide, you can read about some of the ways you can help others in your community. RSVP is promoting “Thirty Days of Drivers” to recruit volunteers for programs that provide rides for medical-related appointments or going to the store for the elderly who are no longer able to drive or those without transportation. Just imagine what your life might be like if you could not just hop in a car to run to the grocery, pharmacy or doctor. This is the situation many of our elderly seniors have to face on a daily

basis. “Thirty Days of Drivers” is a campaign that asks for thirty caring adults to serve just one day a month – 12 times a year – to drive either a van provided by a Health Resource Center or their personal vehicle to give rides to the doctor, grocery or pharmacy. If every organization that coordinated transportation needs had a team of 30 drivers available, they could schedule more rides and no single volunteer would be overburdened. Giving a day a month to serve as a volunteer driver is a great way to honor the memory of a parent or family member who made time to help others. Continue the legacy of service through, “Thirty Days of Drivers.”Call RSVP-Senior Corps at (979) 595-2800, today to volunteer!

An innovative treatment for soft tissue injuries of the foot, using the patients own blood. This procedure offers a safer, less expensive and more effective alternative to invasive foot surgeries. This treatment will revolutionize the treatment of stubborn soft tissue injuries. There are various applications for this in the foot including planter fasciitis, shin splints, tendonitis, ankle sprains and Achilles tendonitis. This treatment is extremely safe with minimal risk, can be done in our office resulting in faster healing and recovery.

BUNION

Bunions are an unsightly bump of bone on the side of the foot near the big toe. They can become painful because of tight fitting shoes. This condition tends to run in families and can be corrected with an office procedure. LASER TOENAIL FUNGUS REMOVAL

The treatments use specially designed laser beams, which go through the toenail and safely reduces the infection in the nail bed that cause Onychomycosis — more commonly known as toenail fungus. The procedure requires three safe, quick treatments with little or no discomfort and is safe, reduces fungal infection, and promotes clear toenail growth.

Good Drivers Wanted

Founded in 1990, Elder-Aid’s mission is to “ensure that the elderly in the Brazos Valley remain independent and in the community for as long as possible.” We accomplish this mission through a variety of “hands-on” help for the elderly. Elder-aid is involved in many projects throughout the year. Almost 100% of these require volunteers. The opportunities are categorized into six groups; transportation, home repairs, yard work, home visits, housekeeping, and office work. Volunteer Drivers are needed to provide transportation for a senior citizen the doctor, dentist or grocery store. To volunteer, contact the Elder Aid office in Bryan (979) 823-5127.

If you have a group of friends who can interpret Spanish, share this need to build the team. A great way you and your friends can help in the community. Helping Hands Valet Parking

Waldenbrooke Estates is a senior living community located across from St. Joseph Regional Health Center in Bryan which provides independent living services to senior citizens. The “Helping Hands” volunteer program is for residents with walkers. They need their walkers to get to the dining room, but once there, walkers can be a hazard to other residents as they make their way to the tables. Helping Hands volunteers valet park the walkers and bring walkers to the residents when they are finished with the meal. The nice perk for volunteers is they can enjoy a wonderful lunch provided by Waldenbrooke. If you would

The museum opened in 1997 and exhibits more than 90,000 artifacts, including a portion of the Berlin Wall, thousands of gifts from heads of state around the world and a WWII-era torpedo bomber aircraft. This, along with wonderful traveling exhibits, makes this a destination for approximately 140,000 visitors per year. Volunteers are needed especially for weekend shifts. The shifts are only 2 1/2 hours long and are for work in the museum, greeting visitors, starting the film in the media room, and taking photos in the Oval Office. Senior Christmas

The Annual RSVP Shirley’s Senior Christmas Project is a much-appreciated service the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program has provided to the homebound and nursing home residents throughout the Brazos Valley area for the past 16 years. Last year they delivered over 600 holiday gift bags filled with requested items. With “Shirley’s Senior Christmas Project (named for RSVP volunteer Shirley Jones, who came up with the idea), RSVP volunteers visit nursing homes and provide forms for residents to request what they want and give the sizes they wear. RSVP is able to do this project because of the generosity of so many people. From sewing groups who make dresses and lap robes to those who donate individual items or contribute funds. They still need new or gently used clothing and other items or funds to purchase requested items. Another special need they have is for help in delivering the gift bags. If you have a van that can hold up to 50 gift bags and are available any weekday during the first 2 weeks of December, they could use a hand. They deliver to nursing homes throughout the Brazos Valley region. To donate to their annual Senior Christmas project bring your donations to the Center for Regional Services, 3991 East 29th St, Bryan (near KBTX-TV studios). If sending a check: please make it out to BVCOG-

The Son-Shine Outreach Center in Madisonville began in 1987 to help persons in need regardless of race, sex, social or natural origin, or religious background by providing financial, food, and prescription assistance to low-income families in Madison, Leon, and Grimes counties. Volunteers are needed to run the Thrift Store by stocking donated items in the inventory, staffing the cash register and assisting customers. The work does require ability to stand for periods of time and lift around 25 pounds. If you can lend a hand, contact Lisa Wamsley at (936)348-5282.
