Elder Aid Friendly Visits and Interpreters
So many of our aging population are lonely and forgotten. Sometimes the only human contact they have with the outside world might only be once a month. Elder-Aid is in need of volunteers to visit
some of the elderly in our community. A simple phone call or visit can mean so much to someone who is alone. No training is required. Volunteers must have compassion and a cheerful nature. Elder Aid is also building a team of Spanish speaking interpreters. Volunteers are contacted on an as needed basis when they have a Spanish speaking client. If you have a group of friends who can interpret Spanish, share this need to build the team. A great way you and your friends can help in the community. Call the Elder Aid Volunteer Coordinator at (979) 823-5127.

Good Drivers Wanted
Founded in 1990, ElderAid’s mission is to “ensure that the elderly in the Brazos Valley remain independent and in the community for as long as possible.” We accomplish this mission through a variety of “hands-on” help for the elderly. Elder-aid is involved in many projects throughout the year. Almost 100% of these require volunteers. The opportunities are categorized into
six groups; transportation, home repairs, yard work, home visits, housekeeping, and office work. Volunteer Drivers are needed to provide transportation for a senior citizen the doctor, dentist or grocery store. To volunteer, contact the Elder Aid office in Bryan (979) 823-5127.
Help with Drive Through Food Pantry
Elizabeth Lutheran Church Community Pantry in Caldwell is open on the 3rd Saturday of each month. Volunteers help organize food boxes and supplements such as eggs, meat, bread, and fresh produce to distribute to clients as they drive up in cars. Volunteers help direct traffic, verify client paperwork and distribute food from an outside utility building. Volunteers must be able to work out of doors, stand for extended length of time, bend, and lift boxes of food. Volunteers helping with client paperwork
just need a smile, a love for others and a willingness to work. Contact Becky at (979) 567-3421.

George Bush Presidential Library and Museum in College Station celebrates the life and career of our nation’s 41st president. The museum opened in 1997 and exhibits more than 90,000 artifacts, including a portion
of the Berlin Wall, thousands of gifts from heads of state around the world and a WWIIera torpedo bomber aircraft. This, along with wonderful traveling exhibits, makes this a destination for approximately 140,000 visitors per year. Volunteers are needed especially for weekend shifts. The shifts are only 2 1/2 hours long and are for work in the museum, greeting visitors, starting the film in the media room, and taking photos in the Oval Office. Senior Christmas
The Annual RSVP Shirley’s Senior Christmas Project is a much-appreciated service the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program has provided to the homebound and nursing home residents throughout the Brazos Valley area for the past 16 years. Last year they delivered over 600 holiday gift bags filled with requested items. With “Shirley’s Senior Christmas Project
(named for RSVP volunteer Shirley Jones, who came up with the idea), RSVP volunteers visit nursing homes and provide forms for residents to request what they want and give the sizes they wear. RSVP is able to do this project because of the generosity of so many people. From sewing groups who make dresses and lap robes to those who donate individual items or contribute funds. They still need new or gently used clothing and other items or funds to purchase requested items. Another special need they have is for help in delivering the gift bags. If you have a van that can hold up to 50 gift bags and are available any weekday during the first 2 weeks of December, they could use a hand. They deliver to nursing homes throughout the Brazos Valley region. To donate to their annual Senior Christmas project bring your donations to the Center for Regional

Son-Shine Volunteers
The Son-Shine Outreach Center in Madisonville began in 1987 to help persons in need regardless of race, sex, social or natural origin, or religious background by providing financial, food, and prescription assistance to low-income families in Madison, Leon, and Grimes counties. The Son-Shine Center Thrift Store helps raise funds to provide these services. Volunteers are needed to run the Thrift Store by stocking donated items in the inventory, staffing the cash register and assisting customers. The work does require ability to stand for periods of time and lift
around 25 pounds. If you can lend a hand, contact Lisa Wamsley at (936)348-5282.

They also answer the phone and provide directions. There is really a wide variety of opportunities to volunteer, from helping in the gift shop, making items for the gift shop, assisting with archival of donations and fundraising events. Thirty Days of Drivers - Van Drivers
Just imagine not being able to drive to the doctor, pharmacy or grocery store whenever you needed? When an elderly person is unable to drive or without transportation, they must rely on others. Fortunately, the Health Resource Centers in Grimes, Leon, Madison and Burleson counties have vans for volunteer drivers to provide this service, but more volunteer drivers are needed. If 30 volunteers would drive just one day a month, 12 times a year, the staff at the Health Resource Center would be able to schedule rides for everyone needing transportation. Giving a day a month to serve as a volunteer driver is a great way to honor the memory of a parent or family member who gave their time to help others. Continue the legacy of service; call today and be part of the “30 Days of Drivers” team.
