TRAVELING WITH KIDS

Tips for flying with kids Special to The Eagle
Dennis Kutwal of Long Island, N.Y., learned how challenging flying with children can be when he traveled to the Dominican Republic with one of his young daughters. “She was perfectly happy until the plane took off,” says Kutwal, a travel agent. “Then she became hysterical.” He later learned that his daughter was experiencing pain in her ears much like adults feel when cabin air pressure changes during an airplane’s takeoff and landing. The pain often is severe for young children, whose smaller Eustachian tubes take more time to regulate pressure changes. The American Society of Travel Agents offers the following tips for keeping kids entertained and happy during air travel.
Drink Encourage young children to drink water or fruit juice before the flight and while the plane is taking off. A

such as gummy fruit or lollipops, which encourage chewing and swallowing and help keep the Eustachian tubes open.
Yawn Many people yawn when they see others yawning. Yawning helps equalize the pressure and reduce pain.
Your toddler may re-read the same book contentedly at home, but don’t expect her to do the same thing on an airplane. Bring a variety of small toys and activities to keep children busy.

However, er he said this er, concept is often one of the hardest things to achieve as an easy-to-use system for the average person. JK Systems makes it simple by centralizing audio and video media at one location and then distributing it throughout a home. So a customer won’t have ha to worry about finding DVDs or CDs and taking them to differ dif ent rooms throughout the house, or get confused while trying to use complicated controls for several pieces of equipment, he said. All a person will need to do is make a choice and press the play button. “Music can be playing over a pool party in your backyard,” he said. “You “Y can be watching a

The possibilities are truly endless, and all of this is compatible with the latest mobile technologies such as dock-able iPods, Bluetooth technology and Satellite radios.” The words “home theater system” conjure differ dif ent images in the minds of consumers. For some, it’s a state-of-theart 60-inch plasma HDTV with 1080p resolution, 8:1 surround sound, reclining theater seats and a Blu-ray player, Bufor Buf d said. For others, it’s a modest arrangement with a smaller TV and a DVD player. At its most basic, a home theater needs a television, a home theater audio system and something that can play movies, Bufor Buf d said. Audio is a key component, and there’s more than one way to build it out without being expensi . JK Systems offers pensive of several differ dif ent brands, including Onkyo, Sony, Denon, On-q and Proficient. By Margaret Maples special to The Eagle
Nothing says summer like a fragrant orange. Or maybe an inviting tangerine. And let’s not forget glorious grapefruit. These are sold already peeled and sectioned at supermarkets. But if you receive a bag of beautiful whole oranges or grapefruit, you’ll want to know how to prep them.
Peel past the pith After slicing off the ends of the orange, let your blade follow the curve of the fruit to take off the colored peel and the white pith.
Either a chef’s knife or a serrated blade works, but SEE TAnG, PAGE 11

maining white bits.
How to cut citrus To section the orange, you might decide to use a smaller blade. Again, very
sharp. And here we run up against the general kitchen warning not to slice toward your hand. We’ve all been told that, and it’s a good idea. But now it’s
time to rethink it. Hold the peeled orange steady in one palm. This is a juicy process, so you might want to work over a bowl or a cutting board
that has gutters. Gently slide the knife between the orange flesh and the thin membrane that separates the sections. Cut to the center, but not through it. Continue around the fruit, lifting out each skinless section as you free it. Let the membrane remain attached at the center, like the pages of a book or spokes of a wheel. When you’ve done all the slicing, close your fist around this mass of orange tissue and squeeze the last bit of juice into the bowl. Let this treasure of ingredients inspire you to arrange sunburst snacks or mixtures with raspberries and blueberries as side dishes for almost any meal. Orange and tangerine quarter-moons are almost an instant dessert, especially if you add shortbread bars decorated with semisweet chocolate.

sure it’s sharp. It might seem to run counter to logic, but a sharper knife is safer, especially in this case, because you won’t have to force it. That means you’ll keep control of the blade and be less apt to cut yourself. This technique is good for any citrus fruit that grows in sections, but let’s use an orange. Slice off its stem end and the polar opposite. Now stand the sunny little orb on one of these new flat surfaces and slice off the heavy peel. Start at the top and let your blade follow the curve of the fruit, taking off the colored outer covering and its underside, the bitter white pith. Finish this stage by turning the orange over and trimming away the re-

COLLEGE
College acceptance, rejection Dealing with both at this crucial time of year
By Erinn Hutkin special to The Eagle
It’s the time of year many high school seniors have awaited for months – the spring ritual in which colleges send thick or thin acceptance or rejection letters (or, in the case of the digital age, emails,) to prospective freshmen. According to census.gov, 19.7 million students enrolled in college at the start of the 2011-12 academic year. It’s a time when a record number of students are vying for spots at campuses across the nation, said Colin Gruenwald, director of college admission programs for Kaplan Test Prep. However, that also translates to larger numbers of college rejections. As decisions trickle in from colleges and universities, many parents will be involved in helping their high schoolers narrow down choices, deal with rejection or lead talks about finances. Here’s some advice from parenting and higher-education experts. Visit campus. While it may sound like a given, it’s important for parents and students to spend time on campus before deciding where to enroll. “It’s like test-driving a car,” explained Jeremy Hyman, co-author of the book “Sewcrets of College Success.” On campus, Hyman said, teens should visit a class and observe whether the professor is teaching well, whether students look like they’re learning and whether they could learn in that environment. Gruenwald recommends parents
prompt their sons or daughters to make a second visit if in the spring they’re undecided. “It’s still surprising the number (of people) who sort of consider the college visit to be optional,” he said. Use logic. If your teen is having trouble choosing a school, Gruenwald encourages parents to help them look at their options objectively. If your teen likes a school because of its football team but the college doesn’t meet other major needs, point that out. Take note of what your teen mentions when he or she talks about college and ask them to consider that when choosing a school. Talk money. Charlie Miller, founder of the New York-based group College Academic Specialists, said if a college’s financial aid offer comes up short, families can try negotiating with the school to see if they can provide more. “Always go back to the financial aid office and say, ‘I appreciate what you offered, but I just can’t afford it,’” he said. “Financial aid offices want to work with students and the family ... they will try to work with you, but you have got to be reasonable.” Look for aid. While there are only a handful of large financial aid institutions, Gruenwald said, there are countless small aid providers. Encourage your teens to look for smaller scholarships here and there. Earning $500 from your church or $1,000 from a local business can add up. He stressed that parents should apply for FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) each year their child is in college.
He said it’s a “one-stop shop” for federal aid such as Pell grants. While the pool is deep, the money is handed out on a first-come, first-served basis.
Cope with rejection. If your child is turned down by his or her top school, you might be tempted to remind them it’s not the end of the world. While there’s a time and place for that, said Bonnie Harris, director of the parent education website Connective Parenting, it’s OK to allow your child to have a “this stinks” attitude for a few days before you start talking about other schools. Hyman said parents should discourage their teens from comparing themselves to friends or classmates. Just like there might be 100 reasons why someone else was chosen over mom or dad for a job over the years, the same holds true for getting into college. “Parents should openly acknowledge it’s hard and disappointing when one doesn’t get in,” he said. Consider time off. If your child is unsure about where to enroll, doesn’t seem excited about any schools they’ve been accepted to or wants a little life experience, Harris said parents might suggest their child take a year off. Teens who’ve been accepted to a school can defer for a year, Harris said, and parents who worry their child will slack off can set conditions such as getting a job or volunteering. “It might help them grow up and discover what they want to do,” she said.

Safe fun Discuss prom safety with your teen early By Randall Stokes special to The Eagle
P
lanning and preparation for prom can begin months in advance. It’s typically the biggest social event of the high school year. However, many prom nights have ended in tragedy. To ensure everyone has a safe prom night, parents and guardians need to talk with their teens regarding prom night safety. Make it an alcohol-free night Underage drinking and illegal substances not only are dangerous, they’re illegal. There are serious, even deadly consequences for driving under the influence. Passengers should never get into a car with someone under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Tell teens to stay out of the car of an impaired driver, find a sober driver or call you for a ride. According to the Cen-
ters for Disease Control and Prevention, “In 2008, 25 percent of drivers ages 15 to 20 who died in motor vehicle crashes had a BAC of 0.08 g/dl or higher.”
Discuss the school’s policies regarding prom night Obtain a copy of the school’s prom night policies instead of simply asking the teen what rules have been set for the event. If parents and guardians have...

...a copy of the policies, they know everything their teens are expected to do or not to do during prom night activities. Discuss these policies together. What is the prom’s time frame? Are students allowed to leave the prom at any time? Is there a schoolsponsored after-prom?
Set strict guidelines for after-prom activities Well in advance of prom night, parents and guardians must set guidelines, including curfew, for after-prom activities. These must be conveyed to the teen’s date as well. It can be helpful to sit down with your teen, his or her
date and the date’s parents or guardians to discuss activities, including after-prom activities. Many schools offer a safe, alcohol-free after-party. It may be at the school or at another local venue. Students attending after-prom enter at the designated start time and must remain at the event
until it is over, usually 5 or 6 a.m. If the teens plan to attend a party not held by the school or a community group, be certain it is a parent-chaperoned party without alcohol. Remember, even on prom night, teens younger than 18 must abide by the state’s driving curfew laws.
