Seniors Expo

T H E B R YA N - C O L L E G E S TAT ION E A G L E

DEAR FRIENDS, Join us at the 16th Annual Seniors EXPO taking place on Wednesday, May 10 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Brazos County Expo Complex (5827 Leonard Road) in Bryan. The Eagle and H.E.B. are pleased to bring you this popular annual event designed to showcase the many services and merchants available to serve seniors here in the Brazos Valley. Seniors EXPO 2017 has a Vegas theme this year, and you can bet on a big win for all! Admission is FREE, so come on out to enjoy vendors, entertainment, educational seminars, free health screenings, door prize giveaways and more. This year, we will begin the festivities by posting the colors in a special ceremony led by American Legion Post 159. Vendors at Seniors EXPO will not only showcase the incredible quality of the products and services they can offer local seniors; they will also decorate their booths to match our theme, so you don’t have to gamble on a good time! We will announce the winners of the annual Seniors EXPO booth decorating contest at 10:30 a.m. Don’t worry if you work up an appetite; concessions will be available for purchase at the EXPO. The fun continues with entertainment from The Rhythm Rockers and Antonio Savala’s One Man Band. Then we’ll gather around the center stage for the announcement of the grand prize winner at 1:45 p.m.; you must be present to win. This year’s grand prize is a two-night stay at the Gaylord Texan Resort on Lake Grapevine, provided by The Eagle. Make sure you stick around all afternoon to catch these incredible performances and to be eligible to win the grand prize! Seniors EXPO is about more than just fantastic fun. Every year, we bring in a panel of speakers specially chosen to share their expert knowledge with our attendees. Our goal is to educate local seniors on subjects that will help them leave the EXPO prepared to make smart decisions about their health, lifestyle, finances and more. This year, we are proud to present “Be Safe, Be Smart” “Being engaged in your Health” and “Ins and Outs of VA Benefits.” FREE HEALTH SCREENINGS to Seniors EXPO attendees will include posture, blood glucose, body fat / weight/BMI, timed up and go tests, and blood pressure monitoring. All testing will be graciously provided by CHI St. Joseph Health, College Station Medical Center and Baylor Scott & White Health. Please mark your calendars and join us at the Brazos County EXPO Complex in Bryan on Wednesday, May 10, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. for Seniors EXPO. Vegas, baby! We would like to extend our gratitude to the many exhibitors who will be at the EXPO to display their products, explain their services and distribute samples for the hundreds of attendees. Every year, we are inspired by the wonderful community members who come together to make this event great!

NUTRITION TIPS

FOR OLDER ADULTS

Longer life spans and aging baby boomers will combine to double the population of older Americans during the next 25 years to about 72 million. Current U.S. Census estimates state those aged 65 and older make up 8.4% of the Brazos County population. Heart disease, cancer, chronic lower respiratory diseases, stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, influenza and pneumonia continue to be the leading causes of death among older adults. In addition, nearly 40% of older adults 65-74 years old are obese. The good news is, good nutrition may play a role in promoting optimal health. A report entitled, “Older Americans 2012, Key Indicators to Well Being” showed that the majority of seniors are getting plenty of fruit, grains, meat and beans; however, many still need help

getting in enough whole grains (whole wheat pasta and bread, brown rice), dark green and orange vegetables, and reduced fat milk products. Also, older adults should consider looking for lower sodium options, as well as decreasing fats, alcoholic beverages and added sugars. H-E-B’s team of registered dietitians is here to help with the following suggestions. Simple ideas for cooking for 1 or 2

COOK AND FREEZE As we get older, many of us no longer find enjoyment in cooking or eating for 1 or 2. For the days you do cook, make enough to last the rest of the week, or freeze leftovers. Bread, fruits, vegetables, grains, stews, soups, chilies, sauces, beans, pastas, casseroles, roasts, almost anything will freeze. MICROWAVE In just 3-5 minutes you can have hot cereal without using your stove. Add nuts, dried or fresh fruit, flax, cinnamon, vanilla

and reduced fat milk for extra calcium to your oatmeal. Let our Deli and Produce Departments do the work. Rotisserie chicken and turkey is ready to eat and lower sodium options are available. Read food labels. Keep sodium to 1,500 mg per day per the American Heart Association. Pair your protein with some of our convenient steam in bag or roasted vegetables and add rice, beans or a small potato for a complete meal. At H-E-B, we know many of our senior shoppers are shopping with budget in mind. After accounting for housing costs, food spending accounts for 12% of household expenses. Let’s keep more money in your pocket, while packing more nutrition on your plate!

SHOP WITH A LIST

Look for EconoMax, Hill Country Fare and H-E-B branded products. Buying fruits and vegetables in season can lower the cost and add freshness. Half of your grocery cart should be fruits and vegetables. For those with poor appetite and taste changes, choose soft, moist foods and easy to chew and swallow proteins such as eggs, fish, yogurt, cottage cheese, beans, lentils, reduced fat cheese, tofu, and tempeh. As we age, our small intestine can

have difficulty absorbing nutrients as well as it did in our younger years, such as vitamin D, Vitamin B12 and calcium. In addition lactose intolerance may occur. Try lactose free milk such as H-E-B MooTopia (it’s higher protein too). Cheeses such as cheddar, Colby, Monterey Jack, mozzarella, and Swiss, are low in lactose. Yogurt is easier to digest and may be better tolerated with meals. Constipation is another common condition of many older Americans. Inactivity, poor hydration and decreased bowel motility are common culprits. Ensure you are getting plenty of fiber and fluid. Examples of fiber sources include oats, beans, peas, apples, bananas, pears, citrus fruits, raspberries, blackberries, prunes, barley, bulgur, whole wheat, wheat bran, nuts, and vegetables such as okra, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots, sweet potatoes and corn. Look for cereals with a minimum of 5 grams of fiber per serving. Be sure to accompany your meals and snacks with plenty of water. Take your body weight and divide by 2 to determine how many ounces of water you should be drinking each day. For example, a 150 pound woman should be drinking about 75 ounces of water each day (or 9, 8 oz. glasses). Osteoporosis occurred in 16% of older

Americans from 2005-2010. Aim for three servings of dairy daily. Dairy products such as milk, yogurt and cheese are good sources of calcium and vitamin D, nutrients that play an important role in bone health. Still taking cod liver oil for vitamin D? Vitamin D comes from food, supplements and exposure to sunlight. Some vitamin D is found in the diet from fortified dairy products and cereals, egg yolks, tuna, salmon, sardines, mackerel and mushrooms. Don’t forget to get in 30 minutes of physical activity daily. Less than half of men and women aged 65 years or older are up to date on preventive services including flu vaccine, pneumonia vaccine, colorectal cancer screening, and mammography for women. Visit your local H-E-B pharmacy for vaccinations any time of year, and free glucose and blood pressure screenings every second Saturday of the month from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
