he Eagle and RSVPSenior Corps are proud to bring you the 14th annual edition of the Senior Resource guide. Because seniors are a vital part of our community, understanding and responding to their needs is the reason The Eagle and RSVPSenior Corps have produced this unique directory of services. A yearly supplement of The Eagle, the Senior Resource guide, comes out in conjunction with the Seniors Expo. The Seniors Expo, held in May at the Brazos Center, has over 1500 seniors from around the Brazos Valley enjoying a day filled with educational seminars, over 80 information booths, exciting entertainment, and door prizes.

Helping Older Persons Maintain Independence and Dignity

The Area Agency on Aging (AAA) has been in existence since 1974 and operates under the auspices of the Brazos Valley Council of Governments. Funding is provided through the authority of the Older Americans Act of 1965, State and local funds and participant contributions. Eligibility for services is 60 years of age or older. A home delivered meal additionally requires clients to be home bound with no other means of obtaining a meal. There are no fees for services provided by the AAA; contributions & donations are encouraged & accepted.

The Bryan-College Station Eagle

Class Instructors Volunteers are needed to serve as instructors for the AARP Driver Safety Program. Instructors must have good communication skills and a strong interest in promoting safe driving. Instructors receive initial training and participate in subsequent workshops to maintain and enhance their skills. Approved expenses, including travel, are reimbursed by AARP. Classes are taught using videos and workbooks developed for the program. Classes are four hours in length. The objective of the program is to update our driving knowledge and skills and make us safer drivers. Open Arms Respite Group

Participants receive a devotional, mental stimulation, socialization, light exercises, guest performers, a light lunch, crafts, games and visits from Aggieland Pets with a Purpose. Loving and fun volunteers are needed to assist participants in activities, light exercise, dance, singing, games, devotional and lunch. Other volunteer roles include contacting agencies or businesses for food donations, serving food, or greeting attendees. Open Arms Respite Group meets on the 2nd and 4th Thursday of the month from 10am – 1pm.

Scotty’s House Child Advocacy Center

Children who are victims of crimes are referred to Scotty’s House by law enforcement officials, CPS investigators and medical professionals. Scotty’s House is a neutral entity, making no recommendations in any case. It simply provides a supportive and nurturing environment in which a child victim can interact with the necessary agencies. At Scotty’s House, the child always comes first. Administrative Team members are responsible for general office duties such as filing, copying, answering telephones and assisting visitors. Additional duties

may apply, depending upon need. Orientation and training is required. Administrative Team members must be available during the week, usually between the hours of 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. All Volunteers must complete a Volunteer Application Packet, schedule an interview and pass a criminal background check prior to orientation. Sexual Assault Resource Center

Volunteer advocates provide crisis intervention for survivors of sexual assault through 24 hour hotline and 24 hour accompaniment services. Advocates provide direct client services. Our Advocates answer our 24 hour hotline; provide support to survivors at hospitals, police departments, and court proceedings; provide face-to-face counseling; represent SARC at presentations and health fairs; and help with other SARC projects. Our Advocates are our lifeline and the voice of support that survivors hear in the middle of the night; without them, the center would cease to function. Advocates must be at least 18 years of age, submit an application, come into the office for an interview, and pass a background check. Potential Advocates will then be admitted into a training class which is approximately 40 hours long. Advocates are requested to make a 6 month commitment to the center and sign up for 2-3 hotlines or escort shifts per month. Weekday shifts are from 5PM8AM. Weekend shifts are from 8AM-5PM and 5PM-8AM. Advocates are able to answer the phone from their home as all

Offers Handicap Van for senior trips to senior center, grocery store, beauty shop, doctor appointments, and excursion trips into the countryside, theater and neighboring towns. Van will be used Monday, Tuesday and Friday for doctor and beauty shop appointments, shopping or errands, Wednesday for excursions, Thursdays for trips to the Senior Center for lunch.
