Summer Fun • April 8, 2011
(MS) — Though the wind still blows from the north occasionally and heat has not yet been turned up on the Brazos Valley, now is actually a good time for parents to think about summer camp. Since most summer camps typically fill their rosters before the actual start of summer, now is the time for parents to begin their search and find the right fit for their child. For parents new to the experience, finding the right camp can be a difficult process. After all, no parent wants to see their child spend the bulk of their summer at a camp they don’t like. When seeking a summer camp, parents should consider the following. • Staff: The staff will play a crucial role in how much your child enjoys himself over the summer. A qualified staff is adept at making all children feel welcome, and will be experienced in making everyone’s time at camp as enjoyable as possible. When speaking with camps, ask about staff and how the staff is assembled. What education and training is required of the staff? Does the camp run criminal background checks on its staff? A good staff will be trained in first aid and have some type of background in child counseling or education. Camps that simply hire kids looking for summer jobs should be avoided. The American Camp Association (ACA) recommends that 80 percent of a camp’s staff should be 18 or older.
a big help in choosing the right camp for your child. For example, a child who isn’t very competitive likely will not enjoy a camp where competition is heavily emphasized, whereas a child who is competitive might not get much out of a camp that is more recreational. • The daily schedule: While some camps might be specialized, most parents send their children to recreational camps that they hope offer their kids a well-rounded experience. Ask to see the schedule from a typical day, and ask about how flexible that schedule is. Will kids be able to choose from different activities each day, or is every day regimented? Remember, kids will be spending their summer vacations at camp, and for many kids camp is an opportunity to relax and spend some time doing what they want. Camps that feature strict schedules might not be the best fit. • Referrals: While summer camps aren’t necessarily as popular as they once were, chances are some of your child’s classmates attend camp in the summer. Ask around and seek some advice on summer camps in your area. If you’re lucky, you might even be able to send your child to a summer camp that some of his classmates also attend, which should make it easier for your child to adapt to camp, especially if it’s a first summer away from home.
• The camp’s goals: Camps can differ greatly with what they hope to offer a child. Camps can focus on religion, sports, music, recreation, or a host of other interests. If you’re looking for a sports camp, ask about affiliations with any local colleges or professional teams. If it’s a musical camp, ask about what your child can expect to learn from staff.
If you can’t find any personal referrals, ask a camp for a list of references. These references shouldn’t weigh too heavily in your decision, as a camp director is obviously not going to give you names of parents whose children didn’t have a good time. But the parents should be able to provide an accurate portrayal of how the camp conducts itself and how your child might fare should he attend that camp.
It’s also important to determine the general temperament of a camp. Does the camp foster a laid back or more competitive environment? This can be

for keeping kids safe this summer Compiled from Wire Reports
Summer is a time of fun, but there are also hazards this time of year. Here are some tips to avoid some of the boo-boos and ouchies that go along with all that playtime.
SUNBloCK
Avoiding common mistakes that parents make when using sun block can help you avoid painful sunburns. These mistakes include: Not using sun block. This is especially common early in the spring or summer, when you don’t think it is sunny enough to get a burn. Parents also sometimes forget to use sunscreen when it is late in the day, when they underestimate how long their kids will be outside, or when it is cloudy outside. Not using enough sun block. The average person uses less than half the recommended amount of sun block when they
do apply it on their kids. So apply a thick layer to each section of your child’s body, to the point that it is actually hard to work it all in. Missing areas of their child’s body when they apply sun block. Many kids, especially younger ones, don’t like to have sun block put on them. This can make applying sun block quite the battle, making it easy to miss a shoulder, thigh, or nose. Not reapplying sun block every few hours, especially when your kids are in the water or sweating a lot. Even sun block that is waterproof should be reapplied often.
INSeCt RePelleNtS
Insects (mosquitoes, gnats, chiggers, ticks, etc.‌) commonly bite children and can make them miserable. There are many safe and effective insect repellents that you can use to protect your child, including those that use DEET, picaridin, citronella, oil of lemon eucalyptus, or soybean oil. Remember to only use products that are approved for children, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and wash off the insect repellents when you return indoors. Insect repellents with DEET are probably the best and most
commonly used. Although it is absorbed through your child’s skin, it is generally safe as long as the product has less than 10-30 percent DEET. You should apply the DEET product to all exposed skin, except near the eyes, mouth, open cuts or hands of small children (who may rub their eyes or put their fingers in their mouth). DEET is absorbed through the skin, so you may want to limit how much you put on younger children, wash it off as soon as possible, and apply it more to clothing than skin. Continued on page 8

Pool Safety Summer Fun • April 8, 2011

for keeping kids safe this summer
According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, an estimated 260 children under five years of age drown each year in residential swimming pools and spas. The Commission estimates that another 3,000 children under age five are treated in hospital emergency rooms following submersion accidents each year. Some of these submersion accidents result in permanent brain damage.
Do not consider young children “drown proof because they have had swimming lessons; young children should always be watched carefully while swimming.
CPSC offers the following tips for pool owners:
Place tables and chairs well away from the pool fence to prevent children from climbing into the pool area.
Never leave a child unsupervised near a pool.
Do not use flotation devices as a substitute for supervision. Never use a pool with its pool cover partially in place, since children may become entrapped under it. Remove the cover completely.
Keep toys away from the pool area because a young child playing with the toys could accidentally fall in the water.
Instruct babysitters about potential hazards to young children in and around swimming pools and the need for constant supervision. Completely fence the pool. Install self-closing and self-latching gates. Position latches out of reach of young children. Keep all doors and windows leading to the pool area secure to prevent small children from getting to the pool. Effective barriers and locks are necessary preventive measures, but there is no substitute for supervision.
Remove steps to above ground pools when not in use. Have a telephone at poolside to avoid having to leave children unattended in or near the pool to answer a telephone elsewhere. Keep emergency numbers at the poolside telephone. Learn CPR. Keep rescue equipment by the pool.

WHAT TO PLANT
The first thing you should decide with your
children is what to plant in the garden. Whether you’re going with flowers or vegetables, it is important to choose plants that grow well in our summer environment.
Beans, tomatoes and squash work well early in the summer, while purple hull peas, black-eyed peas, okra and eggplant thrive when things really get hot. Many variety of peppers also do well in the heat. Your best bet is to consult a Texas garden guide either online or in book form. There you will find the best times to plant different vegetables as well as how to best maintain them. It is also important to plant the right flowers. Roses are a popular choice and can do well if
properly maintained. Lantana is a great choice for our weather conditions because it is very drought resistant and doesn’t require a whole lot of maintenance to look beautiful. Ruellia is also a good choice and its bright purple flowers should be very satisfying to your junior gardener.
Whether planting a flower or vegetable garden, it’s wise to consult a gardening book for this region. In addition to showing what crops work best here and when to plant them, these books also give tips for preparing the soil in your garden to yield the best results.
WHERE TO PLANT
You don’t need a big yard to do a little summer gardening. Small planter boxes are great for flowers or an herb garden, and deeper containers such as larger planter pots or even five gallon buckets are great for larger plants such as tomatoes.
Any of these can be placed on a porch or balcony, meaning you can have flowers, fresh herbs for cooking or a few homegrown veggies even if you live in an apartment or townhome.
Using hanging baskets or window boxes can turn your flowers or herbs into outdoor decoration and even keep some of the pests away.
WHAT’S IN IT FOR THE KIDS
Growing a garden is a great way to not only have some fun with the kids, but sneak in a little learning as well. They can learn about the life cycle of plants, how pests and weeds can be harmful to plants, and learn responsibility by taking care of the plant from a tiny seedling to maturity. It can also give kids an appreciation for the effort that
Summer Fun • April 8, 2011
Summertime can be a great time to test out your child’s green thumb. Starting and maintaining a garden is a great way to teach kids about responsibility, and in a time where people are making every dollar count, homegrown vegetables and fruit can take a little burden off the grocery bills as well. And you never know, the child might be a little more inclined to eat a vegetable that they grew themselves.
For Kids
By BILLY MAU The Eagle goes into getting food on the table or flowers in the flower shop every day. Talk with them about how much effort went into the plants they grew, then tell them about the farms and nurseries where thousands of plants are grown.
Finally, and most importantly, growing a garden is something parents can do with the kids. The time spent tending the garden is a great chance to bond and have fun together. In an age where kids can bury themselves in video games and iPods, that time spent in the dirt could prove to be some of the best moments of the summer for everyone.

Summer Fun • April 8, 2011
How do you make......
Homemade ice cream Milk can become homemade ice cream in five minutes by using a bag! This homemade, creamy treat is a summertime delight for kids and adults alike.
How to make it: Fill the large bag half full of ice, and add the rock salt. Seal the bag. Put milk, vanilla, and sugar into the small bag, and seal it. Place the small bag inside the large one, and seal it again carefully. Shake until the mixture is ice cream, which takes about 5 minutes. Wipe off the top of the small bag, then open it carefully. Enjoy!
What you’ll need: 1 tablespoon sugar 1/2 cup milk or half & half 1/4 teaspoon vanilla 6 tablespoons rock salt 1 pint-size plastic food storage bag (e.g., Ziploc) 1 gallon-size plastic food storage bag Ice cubes

A 1/2 cup milk will make about 1 scoop of ice cream, so double the recipe if you want more. But don’t increase the proportions more than that -- a large amount might be too big for kids to pick-up because the ice itself is heavy.

SUMMER But what to do? Many parents are so unused to having extended time to themselves and might not know how to make the most of time that the kids are away. Here are some suggestions:
During the week Enjoy a night on the town. Date nights are a great way for parents to relax and recharge their batteries. Have dinner at one of the hundreds of restaurants in Bryan/College Station then go for drinks or a movie. Hey, why not do both? The kids won’t be waiting up for you. Stay home. A quiet house can be a vacation unto itself for parents. Rent a movie or catch your favorite television show without interruption. Stay up late or go to bed early – who’s going
to stop you? This is your time to relax.
By BILLY MAU The Eagle
On the weekend Bryan/College Station is close to just about every major destination in the state, even though it doesn’t often feel that way in a car full of kids. Take advantage of the easier travel to party on Austin’s 6th Street, take in a concert or play in downtown Houston or head up to Dallas/ Fort Worth for a trip to Six Flags (best not tell the kids about that one, they might get jealous). Weekend trips to Galveston or Corpus Christi are a great get away for beach enthusiasts.

Summer Fun • April 8, 2011
Kids aren’t the only ones that get to have fun during the summer. More often than not, the break from school means kids could be off to visit grandparents or spend a week or so at camp, which gives parents some time for kidfree fun.

SUMMER For Parents Don’t worry if the big cities aren’t your style. The area surrounding Bryan/College Station is full of things to do. History buffs can enjoy the nearby portions of Old San Antonio Road and the Texas Independence Trail, while water lovers can go to Lake Somerville or Lake Bryan. Enjoy yourself

Remember that there is nothing wrong with having some fun while the kids are away. Parents spend so much time caring for their children that they sometimes forget to make time for themselves. Getting a little rest and relaxation while they are away will give you the boost when the kids come back and you might even discover a perfect place to come back to with the whole family.

Summer Fun • April 8, 2011
CEILING Make this whimsical kite to hang from the ceiling of your bedroom. Choose whatever colors you like to make it your very own!
What you’ll need: Two 12 skinny wooden dowels Scissors 24 x 18 piece of fabric 1 sheet of construction paper, any light color
White yarn Thumbtacks Hot glue gun Crepe paper streamers in colors to match your fabric
How to make it: Use scissors to cut off approximately two to three inches from one of the dowels. Lay construction paper down on work surface. Place dowels onto construction paper. Place the shorter dowel across the longer dowel to form a cross. Hot glue the shorter dowel to longer dowel to hold it in place. Wrap yarn around the center of the cross, enough to secure it and hold it together. Glue end of yarn down to itself. Place cross onto construction paper and use a pen or pencil to draw a simple kite shape around the cross. Use scissors to cut out the kite shape. Tack the cross to the construction paper with hot glue. Place the construction paper kite onto the back side of the fabric. Without gluing anything, fold the edges of the fabric around the kite frame. Trim fabric as needed. Then tack fabric in place with hot glue, making sure not to leave any open gaps. Cut two three-inch lengths of yarn. Find the center of one of the
lengths of yarn and lay it across the back of the kite, along the horizontal section of the cross. Hot glue the yarn in place. (You will have pieces of yarn dangling off the sides of the kite.) Repeat with other length along the vertical dowel. Gather up the ends of the yarn and hold the kite up in the air. Manipulate the yarn lengths until the kite is hanging at the angle you like. Gather all four pieces in place and tie in a knot. Trim the excess lengths of yarn. Cut another three-inch length of yarn. Hot glue one end to the bottom of the back of the kite to create the tail. Cut three-inch lengths of crepe paper streamers. Twist the center of each streamer two or three times to create a bow tie. Hot glue each “bow tie to the yarn about two inches apart all the way down the tail. Hang your finished kite from the ceiling with a thumbtack. Tack the tail of the kite up as well, or hang near a corner of the room and tack the tail along one of the walls.
ÉžĘ?Ć™
The Eagle | theeagle.com
Tips: Try using fishing line instead of yarn to hang the kite. Choose a medium-weight fabric. Fabrics that are very thin may cause light to shine through, showing the makings of the kite. Fabric remnants can be found at local craft stores, discount department stores, and fabric stores.

State Parks offer chances to enjoy the great outdoors Families like to use summer break as a chance to do something different. Unfortunately with gas prices once again proving unpredictable, the costs associated with summer activities can get pretty steep. When looking for cost-efficient ways to have fun this summer, don’t forget about the Texas State Parks. Whether you’re looking to go camping for a few days or just enjoy a picnic daytrip, a trip to a state park can provide a less expensive alternative to other summer hot spots. Listed below are some of the state parks in the area and what they have to offer. Regardless of which park you choose, you’ll want to check ahead with the park before you head out, especially if you are camping. Even the larger parks still have a limited number of campsites, so reserve your spot before you leave the house. Not doing so will likely lead to disappointment when you get there. For more information on the parks listed and the rest of the park system, visit www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/. For information on campsite reservations, call 512-389-8900.
Parks: Bastrop State Park
swimming, picnicking, hiking, boating and fishing.
Distance: About 77 miles
Activities: Camping (130+ sites ranging from primitive to cabins), picnicking, swimming, canoeing, hiking, fishing and golf.
About the park: With a total size of 5,926 acres, Bastrop State Park first opened in 1937. It is the site of the “Lost Pines, an isolated region of pine trees in Central Texas. This is a very popular park due to its proximity to Austin, so reserve your campsites in advance. If you have a hard time getting space here, try nearby Buescher State Park. It is part of the same forest, but generally not as busy as Bastrop. For Texas history buffs, the Monument Hill State Historic Site is only about 30 miles away in La Grange. This is the site of the Black Bean Death Lottery of 1842, in which General Santa Anna ordered the execution of 17 Texan prisoners of war, and the tomb of those soldiers.
Blanco State Park:
Distance: About 150 miles
Summer Fun • April 8, 2011
U By BILLY MA The Eagle
About the park: The 104.6-acre park was opened in 1934. Due to the limited number of campsites, reservations are recommended. Blanco State Park hosts the annual Blanco Classic Car Show on the third Saturday in May.
Buescher State Park: Distance: About 80 miles
Activities: Camping (65 sites ranging from walk-in to cabins), biking, fishing, non-motorized boating, hiking, picnicking.
About the park: Originally opened in 1940, this 1,016.7-acre park has shrunk nearly 700 acres since it opened. That land was deeded to MD Anderson and UT Cancer Center and is used as a research facility located on the 12-mile Park Road 1C, which is a popular cycling route. The road is paved, but the hilly and winding nature of the road makes it more suitable for experienced riders. Fishing is allowed in a stocked lake full of catfish, bass, crappie, perch and even rainbow trout in the winter months.

Embroidery floss is available near the sewing, knitting and cross stitch items at your local craft supply or discount department store.
This is a great project for friends to do together. Have your friend hold the end of your bracelet while you braid. She can tie yours on then reverse roles and help her make hers.

Get kids into the summer spirit by making a summer rainstick. This is a cool craft that uses a cardboard mailing tube and uncooked beans to recreate the soothing sounds of a summer downpour.
How To Make it:
What you’ll need:
Summer Fun • April 8, 2011
SUMMER RAINSTICK Mailing tube with removable lid Pale pink craft paint Light blue craft paint Mint green craft paint Pale yellow craft paint Paintbrush Small dish of water 16 (2 1/2) screws Hammer Screwdriver Hot glue gun and glue sticks 2 strips of pink ribbon, 18 long 2 strips of yellow ribbon, 18 long 2 strips of blue ribbon, 18 long Scissors 3 cups of hard beans (i.e. pinto beans)
Paint (with craft paint) horizontal stripes all the way down the mailing tube with a paintbrush. Make sure you rinse the brush well between colors in the small water dish. Go in this color order: light blue paint, pale pink paint, pale yellow paint. After the paint has dried, paint mint green vertical stripes on top of the light blue stripes. Allow the green paint to dry. Using a hammer, pound the first half inch of the screw into the mailing tube. Do this with all 16 screws. Make them spiral around the tube, about one and a half inches apart. After all of the screws are slightly pounded in, use the screwdriver and finish screwing the screws into the tube. Using the hot glue gun, go around each of the screws to ensure that all of them stay in place. Fill the tube with the three cups of beans. Hot glue the strips of ribbon into the lid of the mailing tube, going in this order: pink, yellow, blue, pink, yellow, blue.
