The camp, for ages 4 to 12, will be divided up into one-week sessions, Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. According to the camp brochure, studying science and history helps children to know and understand the world around them. Camp session topics will include Engineering For Kids, Amazing Animals, Mummy Mysteries, Stars & Stripes, Aquatic Adventures, Once Upon a Time, Dinosaurs and More!, Rainforests!, Space Exploration and Island Life. George Bush Presidential Library and Museum The George Bush Presidential Library and Museum, 1000 George Bush Drive West in College Station, will continue its Exploring History Summer Camp series with Texas Forest Adventures & Mysteries, an all-day, week-long camp. “The camp will focus on stewardship, conservation and appreciation of all things found in the forest,” said Tracy Paine, programs and events director for the George Bush Presidential Library and Museum. “Through museum discovery, crafts and hands-on activities, participants will not only learn about trees and forest friends, but also gain knowledge of fire prevention, products and uses of the forest and preservation. Art class, a field trip and guest presentations will add to the fun.” The camp, for ages 7 to 11, will be held weekly from July 6 through Aug. 7 in the classroom at the museum. “This program complements the current exhibit, ‘History in the Making: Texas A&M Forest Service,’ which was created to celebrate the first 100 years of the Texas A&M Forest Service,” Paine said. “This is the only exhibit of its kind, and therefore the only program that I know of dealing with forest conservation and fire prevention.” For more information on this camp, contact 979-691-4006 or email bush.education@nara.gov. Libraries The Larry J. Ringer Library and the Clara B. Mounce Public Library will offer the Bryan and College Station Summer Reading Program this year. According to Bobbee Pennington, librarian at the Clara B. Mounce Public Library, literacy and reading achievement are crucial issues in the community shared by schools, businesses and the library system. Research shows that school-aged children who do not read throughout the summer will experience a serious loss in reading achievement, resulting in a gap that widens with every successive school year. In an effort to remedy this, the libraries are once again offering their annual Summer Reading Program.
The theme of the Texas State Library’s 2015 Summer Reading Program is “Every Hero Has a Story.” Every week, both libraries will have free, family fun educational events designed to keep every child in the community learning and reading all summer long. This annual public library literacy program serves all children from ages 0 to 18. For this program, children will pick up a game board from the library and pledge to read for at least 30 days over the summer. For each day any reading is done, the child colors in a space on his or her game board. When all the spaces on the game board are filled in, the child brings the game board to the library and receives a new prize book to keep. Babies, toddlers and Pre-K’s can also participate in the Summer Reading Club by having someone read to them every day. For more information on the Summer Reading Program, visit www.bcslibrary.org.
