D3 uses maps to understand the variables that affect local non profit organizations, this allow the program to create recommendations that enable partners to better serve their client’s needs.
Mapping draws information from multiple sources and visually communicates it so that it can be used for a variety of purposes. A variety of data (geographic, demographic, spatial, etc.) is compiled to create a base to layer new information and analyze existing or historic conditions. Mapping is most often spatial, but can also display non-physical, qualitative, or narrative relationships. Determining the scale of the map and how information is going to be displayed is important to effectively communicate a message.

Mapping reveals relationships to place, history and future possibilities. These relationships form the baseline for making change. Mapping permeates our work on almost every level. We use maps to distill complex information, transfer that knowledge, and advocate for change. In the case of many of the communities we work with, knowledge is power and maps can be the visual representation of this knowledge. They allow a wide variety of individuals to interact with information and use it to plan and make choices on projects. At a small scale maps can be carried in a pocket and used to reference information on a site or they can be large prints that are worked on group of people at one time.
