D3 uses maps to understand the variables that affect local non profit organizations, this allow the program to create recommendations that enable partners to better serve their client’s needs.

Mapping draws information from multiple sources and visually communicates it so that it can be used for a variety of purposes. A variety of data (geographic, demographic, spatial, etc.) is compiled to create a base to layer new information and analyze existing or historic conditions. Mapping is most often spatial, but can also display non-physical, qualitative, or narrative relationships. Determining the scale of the map and how information is going to be displayed is important to effectively communicate a message.

Mapping reveals relationships to place, history and future possibilities. These relationships form the baseline for making change. Mapping permeates our work on almost every level. We use maps to distill complex information, transfer that knowledge, and advocate for change. In the case of many of the communities we work with, knowledge is power and maps can be the visual representation of this knowledge. They allow a wide variety of individuals to interact with information and use it to plan and make choices on projects. At a small scale maps can be carried in a pocket and used to reference information on a site or they can be large prints that are worked on group of people at one time.

HOW IS MAPPING DONE? AFFORDABLE HOUSING & TOD

UNIDOS POR UTRGV ASSET MAPPING

Affordable Housing & Transit Oriented Development study in Dallas mapped and assessed parking lots adjacent to DART Rail Stations to determine their potential as sites for affordable housing development. The maps show buildable areas, adjacencies, and connections that would support these developments in the future.

Unidos por UTRGV Asset Mapping examined the relationship between university and community assets and community identified goals. The map showed strategies for connecting university assets and community goals; highlighting the ways the community can partner with the university as they begin their strategic planning process. This process linked diverse needs and opportunities to enhance health, education, economic development, and regional planning through an engagement process between the university and local communities.

Locating a neighborhood on the Dallas Neighborhood map

THE NEIGHBORHOOD MAPPING PROCESS

POP NEIGHBORHOOD MAP POP Neighborhood Map is a tool to identify and define the boundaries of Dallas neighborhoods. Started through a period of research into major publications, municipal boundaries such as planned development districts and landmark districts, and the work continued through engagement and mapping activities with neighborhood, homeowner, and crime watch groups. Neighborhoods were added to the map when at least two sources confirmed new boundary. Today the POP Neighborhood Map has evolved into two interactive digital tools: Know Your Neighborhood which displays and shares vital statistics and stories on previously identified boundaries and Draw Your Neighborhood that gives anyone the opportunity to locate and identify new neighborhood boundaries. The purpose of the neighborhood mapping is to produce tools and develop programs for neighborhood empowerment, positioning citizens as leaders, pushing a neighborhood-centric agenda for municipal planning and decision-making, and deepen Dallas’s appreciation for its complex and exciting local geography.

WHY IS MAPPING IMPORTANT? Mapping reveals important connections between data, stories, and locations. It can link sometimes disparate information to clarify relationships, adding layers of knowledge and history within a specific area. Maps are important in practice to lead decision making and provide rationale for project activities or evidence of project impact. They can also be important engagement tools that allow community members to visualize information and location specific stories. Maps are one of our most versatile tools, be they interactive digital tools or small printed site plans, for displaying information, engaging spatial information, or navigating a place or process. Most importantly they help us record and understand the past all while allowing us to project future possibilities

WHAT ARE THE OUTCOMES?

WHY SHOULD YOU MAP? Mapping can be one of the most powerful tools for making an argument or measuring a project’s success or shortcomings. Maps can be read and used by a wide range of people not limited to planning and design professionals. Web-based maps and mapping tools are widely available and allow information and interactive storytelling to be utilized by an ever growing number of people. The ways that maps are used is ever evolving and as they become more dynamic it is important that they are used to record the past, analyze the present, and plan for the futures.

The most tangible results of mapping work is the visual display of information that can be shared and used for a variety of purposes. While mapping we must understand that maps are not neutral, while complex they display a limited range of information and the hierarchy we give them tells a specific story. It is important to recognize this and to use mapping for a specific goal. Maps can lead to important decisions or preserve knowledge of a place.

Mapping the disaster recovery process

The buildingcommunityWORKSHOP is a Texas based nonprofit community design center seeking to improve the livability and viability of communities through the practice of thoughtful design and making. We enrich the lives of citizens by bringing design thinking to areas of our cities where resources are most scarce. To do so, [bc] recognizes that it must first understand the social, economic, and environmental issues facing a community before beginning work.

Text size is proportionate to the land area of each neighborhood

YOUR NEIGHBORHOOD.

Active and resilient neighborhoods are the foundation of a successful city. POP [People Organizing Place] Dallas is the bcWORKSHOP public design effort to strengthen the social, economic, and physical health of Dallas’s neighborhoods. The POP City Map is a new tool that frames how we naturally organize our communities: as neighborhoods. The City Dallas Neighborhood Map Map builds awareness of our city, celebrates the diverse places that give it character and texture, shares critical data on a local scale, and creates a platform for dialogue about its history and future. By strengthening the identities of our neighborhoods, Dallasites can reconnect more personally and purposefully with place.

Thank you to all of our partners and the funders of the projects detailed in this guide. Most importantly, to all of our neighborhood partners, community members, and volunteers who make this work possible, we could not have done any of it without you.

DALLAS is big! So how do we understand the ways we organize ourselves within it?

The city’s 386 square miles contain thousands of miles of sidewalks, streets and throughways that ease our ability to move and connect;

Around these elements we organize the spaces of our everyday life: our neighborhoods. So far, the POP City Map represents 371 neighborhoods, but we know there are more: 372...373...374... ©2012
