Welcome to our very special edition of The Building Designer, celebrating the 2009 Queensland Building Design Awards. I am pretty excited about this year’s awards for a number of reasons. This year we have had a record number of entries, with more than a hundred absolutely amazing buildings created by some very talented designers. We seem to say it every year but it is true, the quality of design produced by Queensland’s licensed building designers just keeps getting better. I’m excited because this year we have honoured three BDAQ members whose contribution to the profession has been outstanding over many years. In a first for BDAQ, Stephen Kidd and Chris Vandyke, who between them have won 32 Queensland design awards, 13 national awards, 5 state premier awards and 2 national awards of excellence since 1996, have been awarded the membership category of Fellow. The award recognises the impact the work of Stephen and Chris has had in raising the profile of building designers in Queensland. They both are sought by the media looking for design inspiration and their work has appeared in all forms of media and has inspired a generation of designers. One of the members of the committee which laid the foundation for BDAQ back in 1990, Phil Buchanan, has been awarded the membership category of Life Member for outstanding service to BDAQ and building designers over a period of twenty years. Phil was the first newsletter editor back in 1990, when he produced the one news filled page known as Boardtalk, which has evolved over the years into this publication. He has served as State President and played a leading role in gaining important reforms to the building design licences in 2003. But it’s the designs themselves that excite me most about the 2009 Queensland Building Design Awards. The judges found the task of selecting winners in most categories a pretty tough task. Every entry had already won a regional award and it is just as well because there was no design entered that did not deserve to go home a winner. The best of the best this year, however, was really a stand-out. At first glance, you might, as I did, think, “oh yeah, just another Noosa mansion”. Look a bit closer, however, and you find something extra special. Garner’s Beach House has all the size, luxury and great lifestyle we have come to expect from a Paul Clout design, while having a positive impact on the environment. The house is situated on a beautiful elevated coastal site in the wet tropics of Far North Queensland, and demonstrates that an uncompromised lifestyle can be achieved without compromising the environmental impact, while embracing climate extremes including monsoonal thunderstorms, cyclones, high temperatures and intense humidity. The house demonstrates the ultimate in energy, water and waste efficiency in that it is not connected to any services. An invisible state of the art core provides all the energy and services automatically from on site renewable sources. The passive cooling, ventilation and de-humidifying features have been designed in, and high and low thermal mass has been designed to perfectly stabilise temperatures naturally. The house was sited in an area where previous quarrying and cyclone devastation had damaged the delicate environment. It was designed to use only the quarried area, leaving the rainforest untouched. In fact, all the land area not used for building was rehabilitated, leaving the environment better off than it was before construction. The eco-friendly aspects of this home will set new benchmarks in what is considered ‘ecologically sustainable’ design.

Impressive enhancements, adding real value Sustainable timber windows and doors are not just an impressive enhancement. They are energy efficient, built to last and look simply stunning. In addition to improving the energy rating of a building or renovation project you may also improve its resale value making it a wise choice as well as an aesthetic one. Whatever the opening, we can fill it with any type and style of timber windows and doors you choose. Using the Duce Selection Process, possibilities are endless and tailor-made solutions are our forte here at Duce.

Garner's Beach House stands at the top of the market as a stunning eco friendly home, both luxurious and practical in design. With a low environmental impact, entertainment is a big feature of the home incorporating massive open spaces both internally and externally, also enhancing the indoor/outdoor connectivity. A neutral colour palette and warm timber features create a light,
relaxed home, complementing the sensational surrounding landscape. The site had suffered intensive quarrying and devastation from past cyclones. The challenge was to utilise only the quarried section, leaving the rainforest undisturbed. Area not required for the house has undergone intense rehabilitation.

COLORBOND®, Thermatech® and BlueScope are registered trade marks of BlueScope Steel Limited ABN 16 000 011 058. * Depending on level of insulation, building shape and function. Average reduction is 5%.
Why is new COLORBOND® steel with Thermatech® solar reflectance technology so important? Roofing is a key consideration when designing any building to be thermally efficient. That’s why Thermatech® solar reflectance technology is included in the specification of all 20 standard colours in the COLORBOND® steel range, at no extra cost. In hot weather, COLORBOND® steel with Thermatech®
BLUPK32559j_Thermatech_BD_v2.indd 1
can help reduce peak roof temperatures by up to 11°C and provide an equivalent increase in insulation of up to R1.0. And, compared to roofing materials of equivalent colour with lower solar reflectance, COLORBOND® steel can reduce annual heating and cooling energy consumption by up to 20%*. That’s a breath of fresh air for everyone. For information and fact sheets, visit colorbond.com/thermatech or call 1800 022 999.
