Unique Property Sales and Staging WINNER: INDUSTRIAL BUILDING DESIGN
HUMAC DESIGN
Humac Design | Unique Property Sales and Staging 2023 Winner | Industrial Building Design
A showroom that not only provides a space to showcase furniture but also delivers a show piece along Scott Street with eye catching street appeal and a façade enticing clients. The layout of the ground floor and first floor was established to allow ample space without interfering with the doorways and allowing larger loads to be brought into the building. They also wanted the stairs to be both a feature in themselves but also tucked away when first entering the space.

The standout features would be the striking façade with the notched front façade wall along with the colour selection to further enhance its appearance. This property is not missed while driving down the road.
SOUTH LAUNCESTON EARLY LEARNING WINNER: PUBLIC BUILDING DESIGN
RAYMOND DESIGN
Raymond Design | South Launceston Early Learning 2023 Winner | Public Building Design
Bringing back the wildhood in South Launceston Early Learning. Taking a hundred year old building and converting part of it to a childcare centre wasn't without it's challenges. This centre was about repurpose, reinvigoration and reflecting on the past to create a new journey through spaces that ensures kids are able to entertain themselves, enjoy 'real' play, challenge themselves and just focus on letting 'kids be kids' . The interior design was an exploration of colour to brighten up the drab heritage building and create a fun atmosphere. Monochromatic schemes were used to differentiate the age groups . Activity rooms all flow to the external playscape area for direct access.

PASTURE & CO. CAFE WINNER: PETER MODINI MEMORIAL AWARD - NEW COMMERCIAL BUILDINGS UP TO $5M
ARCO DESIGN
Arco Design | Pasture Co. Cafe 2023 Winner | Peter Modini Memorial Award - New Commercial Buildings up to $5M
My client wanted something new and something old for this project. The new was to be something that hasn't been seen on the Gold Coast, a Cafe in a shed in the country. The old is the shed. An old farm shed that used to house machinery for a dairy farm was sitting on the boundary and had to be moved. Located in the Ecovillage in Currumbin Valley we wanted to recycle or re-use as much as possible. All the steel portal frames were reassembled, but all the cladding and interiors is new with recycled timbers and bits and pieces used here and there. The result as a hugely popular cafe at the entrance to the village, a showpiece that incorporates all the design philosophy of the village while providing a modern refined feel for the cafe set.

WILD CANARY CAFE WINNER: COMMERCIAL RENOVATION ARCHETYPE DESIGNS & PROJECTS P/L
With the intention of creating a unique destination for Brisbane's garden lovers, the addition of both caffeine and wonderful food became an imperative. The Wild Canary Cafe Concept is a natural extension of Brookfield Garden Centre. Serving high quality fresh food which comes from the kitchen's own garden. It is an alluring venue reminiscent of 'Old Brisbane cafes' - when it was normal to find an inviting atmospheric cafe surrounded by bushland. The built form intersecting pavilions encourage natural light, provide generous vistas of the gardens and have a relaxed open flowing feel. Seamless transition between internal and outside spaces - spatio-visual homage was paid to the mysterious century old Canary Palm of wild genetic origins featured at the front entry point from which the establishment’s name was inspired.

Taking a conventional traditional cafe space and transforming it into a Micro Brewery, 4 Brothers Brewing is an example of how spaces with small footprints and low ceilings can be re imagined as sheek entertainment venues. Featuring an industrial fit out style with steam punk elements and a simple floor plate, the space is dominated by its soaring ceiling plane with its clever acoustic management strategy. A unique home designed with minimalistic form at the forefront and sharp design features to anchor a visual illusion of complexity and detail balanced with a mixed palette of textural moody finishes demanding attention. We analysed the workings and constraints of the site to arrive at a 'C' shaped floor plan that hugs the northern aspect and distributes all the qualities of a north facing home but on a west facing site. The central areas of the home absorb the northern aspect and connect effortlessly with the northern external space to counteract the effect of west facing outdoor space.

Clark + Granger | Mount View 2023 Winner | Best Bathroom
The client wanted a luxury master bathroom. We designed the space to take full advanbtage of the mountain views and added a raked ceiuling for that extra sense of space. The bathroom tiles wrap around the bathroom and continue round itno the walk-in-robe. We added a corner gas fire as an extra touch of elegance

We created a simple elegant design for the master bathroom. We inlcued an ample shower with product niche and foot rest for leg shaving. The client's each have their own vanities with integrated mirrored cabinets and strip lighting.
We continued the colour themes established on the ground floor, integrating the Nikpol Halifax Oak laminates into the vanities, with Antique White quarts for benchtops. We used porcelain tiles by Coem in different textures to fully line the walls and floors.
HIDDEN HAVEN WINNER: BEST KITCHEN REECE KEIL DESIGN

Hidden Haven - a unique home designed with minimalistic form at the forefront and sharp design features to anchor a visual illusion of complexity and detail balanced with a mixed palette of textural moody finishes demanding attention. Our builder client required a uniquely designed home in both layout and aesthetic to stand out in a flooded market of predictable 'on trend' homes.
The home was to respond to its aspect to maximise desireability as a luxury 'dry block' home drawing attention to a universal function of both living and entertaining. The home needed to be private yet welcoming of northern light whilst drawing the eye to the Golf Corse view to the West. The trade budget was realistic but had to be managed soas not to loose focus of the breif.
HUSTLE & FLOW WINNER: BEST SPACE REECE KEIL DESIGN
Hustle and Flow was born from the idea of an opposing description of effortless space: 'Sprawling Compactivity' where internal space becomes external space and the perception of the overall space becomes one. The stand out feature is the split level rear portion of the house where the kitchen/dining/living is integrated into the alfresco space via a split level. The ceiling maintains its height across the two spaces and provides an impressive height to the alfresco space with an equally impressive continuous structural span.

Reece Keil Design | Kooringal Lodge 2023 Winner | Residential Renovation over $1M
Inspired by international alpine cabin architecture and mid century modernism, Kooringal Lodge was born from the intimacy of its private site, its connection to its rural rainforest surroundings and the topography of the terrain. The machanics of the existing home had proven 'clunky' and non functional so all living and utility areas were redesigned to remedy the day to day living use of the home and its ability to multi-perform in various entertaining scenarios. From a design perspective, there was no breif as the clients leant their faith on my design experience to create something unique yet responsive to the existing structure and its environment.
BDQ COMMUNITY
2023 President's Commendation
PETA CHARLES Peta has been a member of the BDQ community since 2019 and has since become an integral part of the BDQ community. She gives her time and expertise generously and with enthusiasm, working to give Building Designers the tools and knowledge they need to service their clients at the highest level. As a member of the Technical Sub-Committee, she came up with and implemented our Member Development Series, which sees her facilitate panels of industry experts discussing topics relevant to members across a range of streams. These include business development, consultants and personal development. These sessions are extremely well conceptualised, organised and attended. They add value to BDQ members, and Peta runs these sessions with minimal involvement from the Head Office team. Peta has also developed and created social media content for BDQ over the years, lending her expertise in the Town Planning arena to our knowledge base. As if all of that wasn’t enough, she’s been a regular judge for our Design Awards for several years, attends and contributes at her local Brisbane branch meetings, mentors and inspires our Head Office team with her operational/ automation/ systems enthusiasm, regularly and proactively suggests improvements to BDQ’s operations/member benefits, and is regular contributor in our Facebook group and is always just an email away for members who have questions. A positive and vibrant human, she’s a great advocate for BDQ within our industry, and we’re lucky to have her as part of the BDQ community.
2023 Emerging Building Designer
JACK FRASER As a Design Team Leader at StruXi Design, Jack is responsible for management of clients, projects, and junior staff. He has direct contact with our clients, guiding them through the process of their project from start to finish as well as ensuring that our design outcomes reflect the brief provided by the Client. Additionally, Jack is responsible for resource management of our junior staff and keeping them accountable to project deadlines. In addition to being a leader, he is never satisfied with near enough or almost there. In every new task or project he is exposed to, he takes it upon himself to learn as much about the subject as he can. He is the office go-to for Revit and is quickly developing as the reference source for NCC and relevant standards. He has recently been exposed to a project management role that coincided with his study of this topic. He has taken to this exceptionally well and will only continue to develop his skills in this area. Jack is passionate about the industry and the future that it holds for him. He is highly engaged in the industry through BDQ and our workplace. He demonstrates a passion to learn and understand that he uses to encourage those around him to do the same and always aspire to be better. Jack is a student member of BDQ, regularly attends branch meetings and is the student liaison for the BDQ South West branch. He is enthusiastic in his desire for the future of the association and the industry – never wanting Building Design to be seen as second to any other profession. At the BDQ 2021 South West Regional Design Awards, a project that Jack was heavily involved in, Highfields Medical Centre, won the Best Use of James Hardie Products.
2023 Doug Mayes PATRICK QUAIN Patrick has been the Brisbane Branch delegate since 2018. His contibution to the growth and development of the Brisbane Branch since that time has been significant. He has willingly sacrificed much of his spare time to not only attend branch meetings, but also plan them. It is also important to recognise Patrick’s contribution as a TAFE lecturer where he subtly markets the benefits of BDQ membership to his student cohort and that is reflected in the increased number of student members. Patrick has been a keen advocate of the two significant changes to occur within the BDQ structure over the last few years. The first being the implementation of the very successful rebrand program and the second being the change in membership structure that, for the first time, permitted BDQ members who were not Building Designers to become full members of our community along with all the rights and privileges associated with full membership
2023 CPD Prize MARGARET EWINGS BDQ has been a long-time promoter of Continued Professional Development (CPD), and it is a requirement of membership with us. It’s how we ensure our members thrive in their occupations and it delivers peace of mind to the consumers they engage with. Each year we recognise our highest achieving member. This year Margaret Ewings has managed to accumulate 183 CPD points and was awards with the 2023 CPD prize.

A modern small lot home, created in a new beach front community on the Sunshine Coast designed to fulfill the owner's wishes to create a unique holiday home to rent out to guests expecting a luxury short stay. The home showcases modern high quality finishes with the front facade featuring a simple mix of render and stained timber finishes. Simple but inviting. Due to the narrow width and small site area we had to use up most of the lower floor for living and therefore it left a very small back yard. The planning scheme allowed for a maximum building height of 8.5m and so by adding a roof top deck within this height limit we were able to create a large additional outdoor space for guests to use with the added bonus of ocean views and complete privacy from the neighbouring houses.

DESIGNS OF THE YEAR
The project breif for Villa Casa was to design something 'like no other' utilising the slope of the site to maximise the expanse of coastal views and provide a liveable, free flowing floor plan that embraced its location and outlook whilst coocooning its interior. The versatility and structural integrity of concrete construction was to be explored and featured in the buildings external form and internal fabric and the home had to function well as a family home capable of housing many guests and hosting many parties.
The space planning was focussed around maximising veiws whilst also providing various living 'wings' to the home so private spaces remained private but living spaces interacted with all spaces. The lighting was strategically designed to create a flowing mood as you travel through the home, with key areas featured and task areas sufficiently illuminated. The interiors were designed as an opposing blend between raw and refined surfaces to celebrate a relationship between the two.
Suspended concrete construction was utilised for the front portion of the site to counteract the buildability issues over the slope and provide mass open spans for living-entertaining focused on views and the central tier of the cut site. Built form was designed as a modern take on mediterranean hints of organic curves with the layout and flow of the floor plan anchored around space, effortless/endless views and privacy where privacy is needed.
HTTPS://WWW.REECEKEILDESIGN.COM.AU/ 0411 164 868 REECE@REECEKEILDESIGN.COM.AU
The desired outcome was to integrate as much natural outdoor play as possible within the confines of the building envelope provided and also be able to complement the existing adjoining after school care centre which bordered the external wall of the space. A central corridor connects all spaces in a formal arrangement so that staff have clear access between rooms which are placed from youngest to oldest age groups. The main entry foyer acts as the control piont and allows full surveillance over the secure entry path to the centre and also thru the atrium to the external playscape.
The interior design was an exploration of colour to brighten up the drab heritage building and create a fun atmosphere. Monochromatic schemes were used to differentiate the age groups . Activity rooms all flow to the external playscape area for direct access.
Creating a building within a building was our approach to overcome the challenge of how to utilise the existing heritage listed space and shell of the building without disturbing it. We created an inner sancturary hidden behind the existing blank facade which had been dictated by heritage codes and polices.
The space unfolds as you begin your journey and culminates in an external playscape which is still contained with the existing 100 year old structure but has been opened up to reveal the outside environment and open sky. The internally constructed external facade creates a village atmosphere bringing colour and a playful take on an otherwise boring building. this integrates into the external playscape area which is actually the interior of the original building. Selected walls and part of the existing roof have been removed to open up to the sky and flood as much light into the space. HTTPS://RDESIGN.COM.AU/ 0418 666 922 CAMR@RDESIGN.COM.AU
