A NEWSLETTER FROM THE BDBMC M A R C H

From the Executive Director: As the Business Development Board of Martin County (BDBMC) ends its second quarter, we continue to see increased project activity and stable unemployment rates. The BDBMC is currently working on 58 expansion, retention and recruitment projects, all of which would complement our existing businesses here in Martin County. Indiantown remains a hot bed of interest for companies looking at taking advantage of the Enterprise Zone benefits as well as the pool of qualified candidates in the agriculture and manufacturing industry. I look forward to announcing several new projects in Indiantown during the next few months. Martin County’s unemployment rate in February was 6.5%, slightly lower than the previous month and lower than the national average of 6.7%. The state of Florida added 33,400 jobs in February and the unemployment rate remained constant at 6.2 %. The State continues to outpace the national economy, staying one half-percentage point ahead of the U.S. unemployment rate. It is encouraging to see the number of companies in Florida and Martin County that have openings and are hiring for high wage, high quality jobs. The BDBMC remains in constant contact with our local business leaders and looks forward to assisting them on their future expansion plans. Thank you for your support of the BDBMC and feel free to contact me with any questions or comments at tim@bdbmc.org or contact the office at 772.221.1380.

PAC Seating Systems Named South Florida Manufacturer of the Year The Business Development Board of Martin County is pleased to announce that PAC Seating Systems has been named the South Florida Manufacturer of the Year in the small to mid-size employee category by the South Florida Manufacturers Association (SFMA). The award was presented on March 20th at the 35th Annual Recognition of Excellence Awards Banquet in Dania Beach, FL. PAC Seating Systems is the recognized market leader in custom and VIP jet business seating. The SFMA received over 65 nominations from South Florida manufacturers within four employee size categories, with approximately 20 companies competing in the small to mid-size category. The award encompasses firms in Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, Indian River, and Okeechobee Counties. The Six key criteria for selection included: evaluation of leadership; strategic planning; workforce focus; process management; customer and market focus; and measurement, analysis and knowledge management. “The criteria used by the judges are to identify high performing companies in their size category. PAC Seating Systems is a high performing manufacturer, and we are proud to have them in our South Florida manufacturing business community”, said Phil Centonze, Lead Judge. Each finalist company was visited by a panel of judges who evaluated company practices. The judges toured, observed, and asked questions at PAC’s 50,000 square foot state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Palm City. “As a relatively young and small company, it was an honor for PAC to be nominated for this prestigious award. The bar is set very high by SFMA and involves a very rigorous process including their on-site visit, phone interviews, and application process. Winning the award is a very big deal!” said Chuck Tufano, CEO and President.

S.P.A.M. Robotics Wins Regional Competition S.P.A.M., the Martin County School District's high school robotics team, packed its robot, tools and team spirit to compete in the FIRST Robotics Competition Orlando Regional on March 13-15. After two days of intense competition. S.P.A.M., along with teams from Cocoa, Florida and Columbia, South Carolina, won the tournament allowing them the opportunity to advance to the FIRST Championship in St. Louis, Missouri on April 24-27. Over 3,000 students representing 62 teams from high schools throughout Florida, across the southeast, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Brazil, along with hundreds of teachers, industry and college mentors, parents and 6,500 pounds of metal, gears and electronics descended on the University of Central Florida CFE Arena for the tournament. The FRC Orlando Regional offered students an opportunity to win regional recognition for design excellence, sportsmanship, and teamwork. This year's tournament also offered internships to three students from S.P.A.M.. The FIRST Robotics Competition is a program that challenges high school students, working with professional mentors, to design and build a robot to contend in competitions that measure the effectiveness of each robot, the power of collaboration, and the determination of students. S.P.A.M. will travel to one more regional tournament before competing at the FIRST Championships. The team will compete April 3-5 at the FRC South Florida Regional at the Fort Lauderdale/Broward County Convention Center. S.P.A.M. will be defending its title that it has won for both years of the tournament's existence. The event is free and open to the public. More information can be found at www.FIRSTinFlorida.org. This year, S.P.A.M. is comprised of 67 students from Jensen Beach High School, Martin County High School, South Fork High School, Clark Advanced Learning Center and home schools.
