From the Executive Director: On April 9, 2014 the Business Development Board of Martin County (BDBMC) hosted a job fair at Indian River State College. Partners and Sponsors included; Chapter 1041 Vietnam Veterans of America, Martin Veterans, The United Way, Indian River State College, Veteran Services of Martin County, City of Stuart, Seacoast National Bank, Stuart Business Systems, Martin County Library System and The Stuart News. The staff of the BDBMC, along with the planning committee, worked for months on coordinating the logistics of the actual event as well as creating a dynamic marketing campaign for the job fair.

I’m happy to report that 122 individuals preregistered for the event and approximately 600 attended the job fair on the 9th. We had 42 companies represented, 2 trade industries and close to 200 different types of positions available to job seekers. Just 6 days after the event, we learned that at least 24 people were either hired or interviewed for positions. The BDBMC plans to distribute a formal survey to all participating employers in a few weeks to follow up on revised number of hires.

Just a Reminder!

A meeting of the Board of Directors of the Business Development Board of Martin County, Inc. (BDBMC) will be held on Thursday, May 15, at 10:30 a.m. at IRSC, located 2400 SE Salerno Road, Stuart.

The ITown Medical Center is off to an incredible start!

In only six weeks of opening its doors, they have provided services to over 125 patients.

The two-physician health center is providing medical services in Indiantown for western Martin County residents and workforce.

Sales and Use Tax Exemption for Purchases of Industrial Machinery and Equipment EFFECTIVE APRIL 30, 2014 Effective April 30, 2014, an exemption from sales and use tax is available for purchases of industrial machinery and equipment used at a fixed location in Florida by an eligible manufacturing business that will manufacture, process, compound, or produce for sale items of tangible personal property.

The exemption also includes parts and accessories for the industrial machinery and equipment if they are purchased before the date the machinery and equipment are placed in service.

An "eligible manufacturing business" means any business whose primary business activity at the location where the industrial machinery and equipment are located is within the industries classified under manufacturing NAICS (North American Industry Classification System) codes 31, 32, and 33 published in 2007 by the Office of Management and Budget, Executive Office of the President. The primary business activity of an eligible business is that activity which represents more than 50 percent of the activities conducted at the location where the industrial machinery and equipment are located.

Examples of types of manufacturing establishments represented by the applicable NAICS codes include, but are not limited to, food, apparel, wood, paper, printing, chemical, pharmaceutical, plastic, rubber, metal, transportation, and furniture.

The selling dealer (vendor) should obtain a signed certificate from the purchaser certifying the purchaser's entitlement to tax exemption under the exemption statute. The signed certificate will relieve the selling dealer of any potential tax liability on non-qualifying purchases.

For your convenience, we have included a link to a listing of the eligible NAICS codes, along with a suggested certificate for you to complete to document the exempt nature of the sales transaction.

Congratulations to FRC Team 180!

More than 12,000 students from around the globe traveled to St. Louis, Mo., to put their engineering skills to the test at the annual FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Championship, held at the Edward Jones Dome.

The three-day event came down to a heart-pounding conclusion Saturday night in front of a roaring crowd of 20,000 when four teams from San Jose, Calif., Bloomfield Hills, Mich.; Dallas, Texas; and Holland, Mich., won the coveted FIRST® Robotics Competition (FRC®) Championship Winning Alliance. In this year’s game, AERIAL ASSISTS, FRC teams took to the field, where competing Alliances scored points by throwing balls over a truss, catching balls, and putting as many balls in goals as possible. The more Alliances worked together to score, the more points their Alliance received. Big John Monahan Ceremony Please save the date of June 28th for our 50 year dedication of the new Big John Monahan Bridge Ceremony and ribbon cutting! The FDOT infrastructure project of $31 million, was to replace the one way bridge constructed in 1965.

Over 12,000 vehicles per day travel east and west through Indiantown. Please join Senator Joe Negron and Commissioner John Haddox for this ceremony. A formal invite will be circulated soon.

Indiantown Historical Society The purposes of the ITown Historical Society are: (1) to collect and preserve artifacts, objects, publications, photographs and other documentary materials related to local, ethnic and family history; (2) to disseminate information about the history of the community through exhibits, educational programs and publications based on the Society’s collections; (3) to maintain a research library of past and current literature on the history of the community; and (4) to encourage the preservation of the archeological, historical, and architectural heritage of Indiantown.
