Welcome to the latest edition of the Berwyn Magazine! 2021 has been a strange year, with starts and stops but plenty of reason for optimism. A big part of what makes Berwyn special is our incredible events season. While we are not quite back to normal, I am proud of our community for taking health and safety precautions to allow for modified in-person events. We brought back events as strong as ever with the Taste of Cermak, Car Parade, and Berwyn’s Oktoberfest. Last but not least, we will finish our events season in October with the Depot District’s Mini-Golf Pub Crawl. Outside of community events, we also continued to engage with our businesses to better meet their needs. Beginning in June, we saw the return of our business roundtables. These will continue through the end of the year and provide a much-needed forum to share feedback and network. Outside of these formal events, BDC staff resumed corridor walks to share information and resources. With the worst of the pandemic now behind us, we continue to recognize the need for access to capital. Whether it is our continued commitment to the Finish Line Grant program, our Commercial Loan program, the launch of the Berwyn EDA Revolving Loan Fund, or the State of Illinois Back2Business Grant, we are working hard to get dollars in the hands of those hardest hit. Our businesses continue to survive and thrive in large part because of you! This holiday season, we encourage everyone to shop local, support their neighbors, and continue making Berwyn the special place that it is. I am proud of this community, and I am excited for what we will achieve next. Sincerely, Andy Sotiropoulos President, BDC Board of Directors

DEVELOPING BERWYN OPC Kicks Opens Their Doors

BEFORE

La Lupita Expands For larger redevelopment projects, the BDC operates the Pay As You Go incentive. In order to relocate their kitchen, expand indoor seating, and build an outside patio, La Lupita Mexican Restaurant entered into one such redevelopment agreement with the City of Berwyn. This agreement will allow La Lupita to receive a reimbursement of 25%, up to $100,000 towards their project. This amount is earned over time as taxes on the property increase. La Lupita Mexican Restaurant is scheduled to complete construction on their Cermak Rd restaurant in the winter of 2021. www.lalupitaberwyn.com

AFTER

OPC Kicks applied for and received a Finish Line Grant of $13,600 for the buildout of their flagship store near the corner of Roosevelt Road and Oak Park Avenue. Opened in 2021, OPC Kicks offers customized to order shoes, premium shoe cleanings, and other regular retail goods. Check out their online shop or stop by their retail space during store hours. www.opckicks.com

Finish Line Grant Program Throughout 2021, the BDC continued operation of the Finish Line Grant program. This grant program assists businesses and property owners with rehabilitation and renovation of physical properties, as well as marketing costs. Now in the fourth quarter of 2021, we open the program up to all businesses in our TIF districts on a case-by-case basis. The program drives investment; in 2020, for every $1 of Finish Line funding, we saw $5 in private investment. So far in 2021, we have committed more than $285,000 towards 12 projects and 8 marketing initiatives. Funds are still available, contact us to get your application started today!

Available BDC Loan Programs The BDC Commercial Loan, Micro Loan, and EDA Revolving Loan Programs are operated in conjunction with the City of Berwyn to retain and improve Berwyn businesses and to encourage new business investments. The loans may be used for almost any business-related expense, including build-outs, façade improvements, equipment, inventory and working capital. The Commercial Loan Program offers: • Traditional loans of $10,001 or greater. • Annually-established interest rates. • A maximum term of 5 years. The Micro Loan Program offers: • Micro loans between $1,000 to $10,000. • Annually-established interest rates. • A maximum term of 3 years. EDA Revolving Loan Program Eligibility: • Have a denial letter from a financial institution • Meet other loan program criteria • Pledge to create or retain one job for every $35,000 borrowed

Loan applications may be submitted at any time.

The BDC Recognized as a Certified Lender In early 2021, the BDC received notice that it had been recognized as an approved lender through the Advantage Illinois Program. This State of Illinois program allows the BDC to submit eligible loans to the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity for further approval. Eligible loans would receive additional financing from the State which can act to reduce the BDC’s lending risk profile, reduce the borrower’s interest rate, and reduce the borrower’s equity requirement. The State of Illinois would take a second position on the loans, ensuring subordination to the BDC. These additional funds are not right for everyone, as they do come with specific job creation criteria. However, this recognition provides additional lending power to the BDC’s already diverse programs and services. * For more information on the grant and loan programs, please reach out to Division Director of Economic Development and Planning Services, Brett Michaelson at brettm@berwyn.net or (708) 749-6582.

Progress Report

After battling the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, Berwyn schools have bounced back. Here’s how they’re demonstrating their ability to adapt, overcome and progress while staying safe and having fun. After a school year like no other, Berwyn schools and families proved they could rise to the challenge. Now with a new game plan in action, we spoke to the educators and district leaders who are working tirelessly to keep the momentum going through investments in new technology, support programs, parent liaisons, building improvements and much more.

BERWYN NORTH SCHOOL DISTRICT 98 Includes Havelicek, Jefferson and Prairie Oak elementary schools; and Lincoln Middle School 6633 W 16th St | Berwyn, IL 60402 (708) 484-6200 | bn98.org

Dr. Michelle Smith, Superintendent

What They've Been Up To Berwyn North School District 98 started the 2021 year off big, with an incredible ‘Back to School’ event that saw students earning over $5,000 in amazing prizes donated by local businesses! Kids took home bikes, tablets, gift baskets, gift cards, backpacks and more, while also enjoying free tacos, hot dogs, ice cream, and churros — plus many games and a petting zoo. The district also hosted a ‘Meet and Greet’ event with families as an opportunity for parents and students to get to know their teachers in a friendly and fun environment before school started. “These awesome events were hosted by Berwyn North School District 98, but with the support and collaboration of our community;” said Stephanie Barba, a communications specialist with the district. “I believe it’s safe to say that it was a success, and fun was had by all.” Berwyn North District 98 is also currently undertaking several exciting capital improvements to its buildings, including two STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) labs which will be opening soon at Havlicek Elementary and Jefferson Elementary. The STEAM lab’s curriculum is an extension to the district’s science and math curriculums, and includes hands-on activities that emphasize the application of scientific concepts as we experience them in our daily lives — such as an exploration area with a Lego wall, dynamic tables for research and big screens for presentations. “In the next few years, all of our schools will have state-ofthe-art STEAM centers,” Barba said. Technological advancements have already reached the classrooms — just recently Berwyn North’s middle school classrooms were outfitted with new 75 inch interactive touch display technology. Over the summer, the district also switched to a new student information system called Skyward, the same one used by J. Sterling Morton School District 201.

10

Additionally, Berwyn North also implemented a new student support program called Paper, which is a platform that features 1:1 tutoring in reading, writing and math that’s available in English, Spanish, French, and Mandarin for both parents and students to use.

Coming Soon...

“Berwyn North has big, positive changes coming soon!” Barba said. Two upcoming changes the district is most excited for include: • The construction of two new STEAM labs in Prairie Oak

Elementary and Lincoln Middle School • A new cooking kitchen currently being planned that will serve fresh meals daily to all the students in our district

Meet the Team Name: Mary Beth Arenella Role: Berwyn North's new Home-School Community Liason “I started with Berwyn North School District 98 in August after previously working with J. Sterling Morton School District 201 for eight years, serving the last three as a Parent Liaison. When I found out that Berwyn North School District 98 had an open position for a Home-School Community Liaison, I knew I had to apply. You see, I had just spent 12 years with Berwyn North School District 98 as a school board member; my term just ended in April. My heart has always been with District 98 because my children attended school in the district, and before becoming a board member, I was also the president of the Parent-Teacher Association for a year. I love and enjoy my job, as it gives me the opportunity to continue to give back, help and support parents by getting them the information they need to ensure their child’s academic and social success in school, and to also share valuable resources with our parents and community. I am also a Berwyn resident of 26 years, and it's a blessing being able to work and give back to the community I live in.”

Looking Forward

2021-2022 Dates To Know: Thanksgiving Break: November 24-26 Winter Break: December 24 January 7

Pointing to the future, district officials said Berwyn North was focused on fostering a strong partnership among students, staff, families, and the community, as well as equiping students with the ability to communicate effectively, collaborate, think critically, creatively address problems, and apply technology to reach their full personal, academic, and civic potential. Put together, these practices will see District 98 provide a world-class education to every student every day, commit resources to attain each student’s success, and develop positive relationships with families and the community.

BERWYN SOUTH SCHOOL DISTRICT 100 Includes Emmerson, Hiawatha, Irving, Komensky, Pershing and Piper elementary schools; and Heritage and Freedom middle schools

What They've Been Up To District 100 was busy over the summer preparing to welcome all students and staff back to school in-person. The district hosted two summer school sessions for students, including a new jump-start to kindergarten program offered for the first time this year. "Staff has also been engaging in an extensive district and school improvement process to focus on goals for the next several years," said Superintendent Dr. Mary Havis. "As part of this process, staff members reviewed data, identified the greatest areas of need, and identified measurable goals for academic and social-emotional growth for students." Other exciting highlights for the 2021-2022 school year the district include: • The dual language program expanded to 6th grade at Heritage Middle School Dr. Mary Havis, Superintendent this year and will begin at Freedom Middle School next school year. • All six elementary schools have math support teachers to provide additional instructional opportunities and math support to students. • Facilities projects were completed at many of our schools this summer, including ventilation upgrades, roof and masonry repair, playground and fencing upgrades, and building maintenance. • District 100 has partnered with Youth Crossroads to increase counseling support at our middle schools and social work positions were added to support students across the district. “We were excited to kick-off the school year with a strong focus on continuous growth and improvement, and are committed to promoting leadership and empowering all students and staff to transform learning experiences in our schools,” Havis said.

Looking Forward

“There is so much enthusiasm for what is possible in District 100!” Dr. Havis said. “As educators, we learned a great deal about our students, our families, our colleagues, and ourselves during remote and hybrid learning. Now that our students are back in person, we are focused on applying this new knowledge and implementing strategies to increase student engagement and differentiation to meet the academic and social emotional needs of all students. We continue to invest in strengthening our curriculum with the addition of new social studies and science curriculum at the middle schools this year. We are fortunate to have additional staff positions to support teaching and learning, and we continue to remain focused on providing rigorous learning experiences and welcoming schools for our students, staff, and families.” 2021-2022

This is a STEAM conference for students in grades 3-12 featuring a keynote speaker, student presentations, and interactive learning activities. The SIT conference gives students a space to share their passion for technology and creation and provides the opportunity for them to learn from their peers. “SIT is a unique conference hosted by kids, for kids, and we look forward to bringing this opportunity to students in the Berwyn community again this year!” Dr. Havis said.

Meet the Team Name: Junely Escobar Role: Director of Instructional Innovation

District 100 is pleased to introduce Junely Escobar as the new Family Liaison. The Family Liaison position was added this year as the district continues to focus on increasing family and community involvement in its schools through more personalized communication and resources to support students and families, as well as increased opportunities for families to become involved in the schools. “I am excited to have joined this new role as the Family Liaison for South Berwyn District 100,” said Escobar. “It is a privilege to get involved and share information with parents and teachers to ensure students academic success. My goal is to continue to promote and encourage parent engagement, and be a bridge of communication between school and home.”

Name: Samantha Shuman Role: Director of Instructional Innovation

In her 14th year with District 100, Samantha Shuman is the new Director of Instructional Innovation. She previously served eight years as principal of Piper Elementary School, as well as taught fourth grade at Hiawatha Elementary School. In this new role, Samantha works with administrators, coaches, and teachers to facilitate the integration of educational tools and best practices in curriculum and instruction. She will also be working to ensure district programs meet the educational needs of students, and provide learning opportunities that support creativity, exploration, growth, and leadership. “Our district has been investing in instructional innovation since 2010 by first providing teachers with instructional tools — like iPads and Macbooks — and instructional supports — such as coaches and quality professional development — to enhance the learning experiences for our students,” said Shuman. “We believe that innovation can be described as seeking change with a purpose. With the creation of our new Department of Instructional Innovation, our goal is to empower our teachers to deepen their understanding of our curricular expectations and state standards, while infusing personalized and equitable learning experiences for all students. Our instructional coaches partner with our teachers to collaborate on classroom experiences that give students an opportunity to share their ideas with a greater audience, show their creative side, and transform their knowledge and understanding within their units. We are most excited to watch the impact our instructional coaches and teachers will have on our students’ growth as they inspire a passion for learning and prepare them to be positive influences in our changing world.”

A message from

Mayor Robert J. Lovero, City of Berwyn Happy Fall Season Berwyn, As 2021 winds down, the weather changes, and the holiday’s approach, more indoor activities are in our future. The City of Berwyn administration will continue to monitor the local impact of the coronavirus (Covid-19), keeping the safety of residents the number one priority. We encourage residents to use the Berwyn Township’s resources and get vaccinated. We ask that everyone continue to follow the Illinois Department of Public Health guidelines while in public settings. Maintaining the safety and health of Berwyn and its residents is a community effort. We also want to remind vaccinated residents to dine and shop local to help the wonderful businesses of Berwyn thrive. It is important to remember that Berwyn is packed with amazing shops, restaurants, and artisans. Shopping and dinning local is built into the DNA of the city. Remember that the owner of your favorite restaurant, store, or shop is a neighbor, and in Berwyn we support each other. I encourage everyone to take some time and visit the shop down the street, try that restaurant you have always wanted to try, or buy that special someone the perfect gift! Have a Happy and Safe Season. Mayor Robert J. Lovero Mayor Robert J. Lovero City of Berwyn

A message from Cook County Commissioner Frank J. Aguilar Come visit me at

Berwyn City Hall! Since my inauguration in April of 2020 as Cook County Commissioner, I have been instrumental in connecting Cook County’s 16th District to much-needed funds. 6700 W 26th St, 2nd Floor For example, I coordinated efforts for community outreach and walked Berwyn, commercial IL 60402 (708)the 749-6433 corridors in Cicero and in Berwyn, providing business owners with information and resources needed to apply for the Back to Business Grant. This grant, administered by the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, aims to assist small businesses in the recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to supporting business owners, I have also helped city officials secure funding needed to improve their communities. In fact, townships in the 16th District received over $1.6 million through the Invest in Cook grant program. Berwyn specifically was “awarded funds for improvements to the 26th Street and Ridgeland Avenue corridors. These corridors provide direct access to several transit options in addition to local schools, parks, business areas, churches, and municipal buildings. The project will include improved sidewalks, enhanced roadway and pedestrian lighting, streetscaping, bump-outs at intersections that accommodate heavy pedestrian traffic, and pedestrian-activated flashing beacons or lighted crosswalks.” By promoting the Back to Business and Invest in Cook programs in the City of Berwyn, I am working with Berwyn’s elected officials to increase livability and encourage economic recovery. These are just a few of the many efforts that I have led to help meet the needs of the Berwyn community. Regards, Frank J. Aguilar
