ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION

hen it comes to transportation, Berwyn lies right in the heart of the Chicagoland transit system. Located just eight miles west of the Loop and in between I-290 and I-55 with convenient access to both, the suburb offers easy access to commuters whether they travel by car, on the CTA’s Blue or Pink Line or on Metra. Describing itself as Nothing Like A Suburb, Berwyn stands out because it offers an urban experience through its variety of transportation modes that also support active transportation like walking and
biking. These options coupled with ease of access to both downtown Chicago and the far west suburbs has helped Berwyn attract area professionals looking for a place to call home. Metra-BNSF trains offer a quick commute to counties throughout the Chicagoland area. Berwyn’s Downtown Depot District has three stations: LaVergne, Berwyn and Harlem. CTA’s Blue Line is just four blocks north of Roosevelt Road, while the Pink Line is less than a mile east of Berwyn’s limits on Cermak Road. Multiple PACE Bus routes tie Berwyn to these stops, along with many other destinations throughout the surrounding area. In recent years, Berwyn has prioritized bike infrastructure, providing dedicated
routes in town that connect to regional routes and trails. BDC Urban Planner Kurtis Pozsgay, AICP stressed that Berwyn is a natural choice for a first time home purchase for renters in Chicago concerned about commute times and quick access to Chicago. Moving to the suburbs provides the opportunity for a yard, but it doesn’t have to mean loss of access to Chicago’s amenities. Whether it’s commuting for work or making a trip downtown for a sporting event or concert, many people still want convenient transportation options to get around town and access to job centers. A 12-minute train ride to downtown keeps local residents connected to Chicago for both work and leisure time.
BDC Chamber Director Amy Crowther notes that access to transportation is a key factor for many homebuyers choosing Berwyn. “They see that downtown is minutes away on the CTA, Metra or 290 and they love that they can still be connected to Chicago while living a bit outside of the city in their own home.” In support of its senior citizens, the City of Berwyn also provides rides for seniors on a “senior bus,” ensuring that residents of all ages can enjoy all that the village has to offer. For residents of all ages, Berwyn’s location in the heart of it all makes it easy to take advantage of all that the suburbs and the city have to offer. See map on Page 5.

Berwyn was notable for the sculpture Spindle, created by artist Dustin Shuler and located in the Cermak Plaza shopping center along with other works of art. The Spindle was shown in the movie Wayne’s World. It was demolished and scrapped on the night of May 2, 2008, to make way for a new Walgreens. Grassroots efforts to Save the Spindle failed to raise the $300,000+ that it would have taken to dismantle and relocate it.

n partnership with the Berwyn Development Corporation, the City of Berwyn launched an Integrated Marketing Campaign in 2007 in order to differentiate the City of Berwyn from the many suburbs of Chicago. Last summer, the team launched a refreshed look for the marketing campaign to better reflect our community’s rich history and forward momentum. Billboards and CTA El platform signage in Chicago displayed three bold messages that used humor and fact to position Berwyn as “Nothing Like a Suburb.” Berwyn is a thriving, self-made city defined by our local pride, accessible nightlife and warm, welcoming attitude. The Arts are alive in Berwyn By Lacey Sikora Contributing editor
P
art of Berwyn’s appeal for residents and visitors alike is the community’s enthusiastic embrace of the arts. From a growing music scene to theater and the visual arts, Berwyn supports its local artists and recognizes the importance of art in the lives of children and adults. Loren Middleton helped dub the stretch of Roosevelt Road between
East Avenue and Harlem Avenue as the Veltway. The corridor had long been home to live-music stalwart FitzGerald’s Nightclub and hometown favorites Buona and Gina’s Italian Ice. With a newly completed streetscape, live music introduced at Friendly Tap and Wire and a growing, eclectic mix of dining options at like Autre Monde Café & Spirits, Bodhi Thai Bistro, Big Guys Sausage Stand, Culver’s and Capri Ristorante, Roosevelt Road See ARTS on page 24

has experienced a renaissance, and the Veltway has become a destination that residents and visitors have embraced for a night on the town. Middleton was first drawn to the Veltway through his own love for music. For his two bands, newer clubs like Friendly Tap and Wire act as an incubator for emerging artists. “Being a musician and kind of falling in love with the community and support network, I think this area is a real lightning rod for the community.” Like Middleton, musician Aaron Mitchell and his wife Jennifer were drawn to Berwyn by the selection of local hotspots and the great housing stock. They quickly found a home base for his band Dirty Green on the Veltway, and he looked for ways to help the arts continue to grow in Berwyn. In 2014, he founded BAM, Berwyn Arts & Music, a nonprofit organization bringing arts programming to youth in Berwyn. Partnering with local youth organizations, BAM brings arts programming into local schools and in July sponsored BAMfest, an arts and music festival, in conjunction with the Berwyn Park District. For adult artists, Mitchell recently founded The Outtaspace, as a vehicle of connecting local artists with the community at large through the sponsorship of arts exhibitions, performances, workshops, pop up galleries and events. Mitchell is currently working on bringing the The Outtaspace to its own brick and mortar building in Berwyn’s Depot District.

and aims to provide arts education for local children. The Berwyn Arts Council advocates for public art, encourages young artists within the community and creates networking opportunities for artists to share ideas. Rob Thomas, managing director of the 16th Street Theater along with artistic director Ann Filmer, is proving that Berwyn is also breaking new ground in the theatrical arts. Since 2008, the theater has been recognized as a playwright’s theater, featuring provocative new content in world and regional premiers. Not only is the content something that can’t be seen elsewhere, but Thomas points out that it is also a great deal. “We produce theater that people can afford to see. With ticket prices at $18 for a single show for Berwyn residents and $20 for others, there are also subscriber series and the $100 club, which includes admittance to opening night parties and events.” On the south end of town, live entertainment can be found at spots See ARTS on page 28

like Cigars & Stripes BBQ Lounge. The bar and restaurant maintains a calendar of live music, comedy, movie screenings and more. Ken Zimmerman has been part of the Berwyn arts scene from the very beginning, opening the Harlem Avenue Lounge in 1980. What started out as a neighborhood bar turned into a blues destination with his Tuesday night front porch solo shows, Thursday night blues jams and regular shows on the weekends. Zimmerman notes that the blues is a musical genre that appeals to all. “I’ve always enjoyed the blues. It’s a music that appeals to many age groups. It’s not a fad.” On Saturday nights, Zimmerman sees people ages 21 to 80 years old sitting next to each other, enjoying high quality music. While the atmosphere is low-frills, it’s all about the music, and he sees the Harlem Avenue Lounge as a destination for locals as well as those looking to escape the high cover and parking charges of the city scene. CELEBRATING THE BUNGALOW Berwyn: The City of Homes BY LACEY SIKORA Contributing editor
B
erwyn has long been sought after for its charming housing stock, and the near west suburb recently gained national recognition for the many Chicago-style bungalows that dot its streets. On August 18, 2015 the Central Berwyn Bungalow Historic District was placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the National Park Service. Alicia Ruiz, President of Berwyn’s non-profit Community of Homes Organization (CoHo), notes that earning that designation was a long process that recognizes the unique nature of Bewyn’s housing stock. “This is one of the nation’s largest historic districts in Illinois and one of the largest districts in the country. Bungalows are found throughout our community, but the core area that received recognition is bounded by Cermak Road on the north, 26th Street on the south, Ridgeland on the east and Home on the west.” Of the 1,506 residential structures in the district, 1,360 of them were designated as contributing to the historic nature of the area. In order to encourage the preservation of Berwyn’s housing stock, CoHo created the Berwyn Bungalow Preservation Initiative (BBPI) to provide resources and incentives for homeowners to restore and maintain these homes. Participation in BBPI is voluntary, and offers homeowners design guidelines for restoration, the ability to register homes as national landmarks and the opportunity to take advantage of the Illinois Property Tax Assessment Freeze for certain improvements. Explore cityofhomes.org to learn more. Ruiz says that beyond the architectural awards, Berwyn bungalows offer a great place to raise a family. As a realtor with Re/ Max Partners, she sees that Berwyn’s location and historic housing stock are big draws for people looking for a place to call home.

“People are drawn to the location that is away from Chicago because it offers an affordable, livable, walkable and transit-oriented place to live. We’re an urban suburb. You can walk to schools, shops and restaurants. Downtown Chicago is minutes away on the CTA, Metra or I-290. You can find a great house, with sound structure, charm and character that is affordable. The mortgage payments and the taxes aren’t going to drown you.” The hometown feeling that Ruiz praises is also what drew her to Berwyn. “I practice what I preach. I live, work and play here. I can walk to my office, and I can be involved with the PTO at school and volunteer with CoHo. I love to share my community with people. It’s a place where you can grow your roots deeply, raise a family and build a life.”

Berwyn is for Business
I
BY LACEY SIKORA Contributing editor
n creating a robust business environment, the Berwyn Development Corporation (BDC) has partnered with the City of Berwyn to answer the question: Why Berwyn? With four vibrant commercial corridors, countless independent stores, and a great track record of attracting new business while serving the needs of its existing base, Berwyn has a business environment that is buzzing with activity. For 33 years, the BDC has worked with the City of Berwyn to lead business development initiatives. Tony Griffin, BDC Executive Director, noted that Berwyn’s density works in its favor in recruiting new businesses to open up in town. “We have a great
track record for attracting new business, and we have about a quarter million square feet of new retail space because of our density.” The BDC works hand-in-hand with the City to walk businesses through the development process. Griffin remarks, “We’re comprehensive. We start at business recruitment, assist with their grand opening and offer a wide array of marketing and business resources through our Chamber Services division. We are here to educate our businesses on topics like changing technology and social media while also troubleshooting concerns like See BUSINESS on page 34

See summaries on page 37. Recently, in partnership with the City of Berwyn, the BDC completed a complete rehabilitation of the Cermak Rd and Harlem Ave intersection, bringing in 142,500 square feet of new retail, including a Buffalo Wild Wings, Starbucks, Meijer Marketplace, and Ross Dress for Less clothing. In collaboration with the neighboring communities of Oak Park and Cicero, the BDC also worked to rehabilitate the Roosevelt Road corridor, turning it into a destination for music and dining. Business Districts Roosevelt Road
Roosevelt Road, or 12th Street in Berwyn, marks the border between the Village of Oak Park and the City of Berwyn. This corridor is an entertainment and dining destination with nationally known live music venues like FitzGerald’s Nightclub and Wire and jukejoints like Friendly Tap serving up everything from country and rock to jazz and blues. Roosevelt Road offers the best that contemporary dining has to offer from fine dining at Autre Monde Café & Spirits and Capri Ristorante to hometown eats… all with an urban edge. The corridor is also home to the national headquarters for Turano Baking Company and Buona Restaurant.
Cermak Road
Berwyn’s densest commercial area, Cermak Road was once known as the “Bohemian Wall Street” due to the large number of savings and loans located here. Today, this corridor is an eclectic mix of retail and restaurants including iconic green energy powerhouse Cermak Plaza. Cermak Road boasts a wide array of shopping options, from major national retailers at the corridor’s western gateway at Cermak Rd & Harlem Ave to locally owned boutiques along this densely developed boulevard. On Main Street, you’ll find a mix of traditional Czech spots, Latin-American inspired haunts and Frank Thomas’s new Big Hurt Brewhouse.
Depot District
Berwyn’s quaint, walkable city center extends across both sides
of the Metra Line with a mix of independent shops, restaurants and lounges and access to parks. Visitors have a variety of transportation options via train, bus or biking in this transit-oriented district. Home to MacNeal Hospital and a variety of medical services, the Depot District also has an array of independent shops offering rare finds that appeal to collectors and those seeking specialty items. Downtown has something for everyone from takeout to white table cloth dining and energetic karaoke bars to the relaxed cocktail lounge. This area is home to some of our community’s biggest annual celebrations, including Berwyn’s Oktoberfest.
Ogden Avenue
Ogden Avenue is Berwyn’s stretch of Historic Route 66 – the Mother Road – designed for automobiles when the car was king of American culture. One of the first eastern suburban communities along this stretch, we celebrate our heritage at the Berwyn Route 66 Museum, the annual Berwyn Route 66 Car Show and through our four scenic byway wayside exhibits. Streetscape improvements incorporate a 1950s automotive theme for the now thriving business highway that is home to a number of auto-oriented businesses like Berwyn Kia, J.D. Byrider and Ogden Top & Trim as well as awardwinning dining stops like Paisans Pizzeria & Bar, Cigars & Stripes BBQ Lounge and Avito Caffe.

Houby parade, 1950s. A celebration of Berwyn’s and Cicero’s Czech heritage. Pronounced “ho•bee,” the festival centers around the Czech and Slovak word for mushroom, which was the object of a hunting tradition and a significant part of the Czech diet.

At Shriners Hospitals for Children — Chicago, our mission is simple: deliver world-class care to children who need it most – whether their families can afford it or not. For 90 years we’ve specialized in helping children affected by orthopaedic conditions, cleft lip and palate, spinal cord injury, and rehabilitation needs. And while expertise, dedication and generosity make it all possible, we believe our hospital is fueled by love. That love is what helped the Shriners network of 22 locations treat over 127,000 children last year alone, helping them at every step as they made the journey from patients back to kids.
