Berlin, Paris June 4, 2020 BDI and MEDEF welcome the progress of the GAIA-X project presented today by the German Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, Peter Altmaier, and the French Minister for the Economy and Finance, Bruno Le Maire: GAIA-X is a successful European project that should serve as a model for other digital initiatives in Europe. ▪ BDI and MEDEF appreciate the efforts made along the past months by German and French participants of the project to join forces on both sides to reach in a first step a common position paper published on 19th of February 2020 and today a basic technical concept and the foundation of a legal governance organisation for GAIA-X. ▪ This long journey was made possible thanks to continuous involvement of various parties from the business, scientific and public sector including BDI and MEDEF to promote the project among all relevant stakeholder groups. Due to the results presented today GAIA-X takes a much more concrete picture now. ▪ For BDI and MEDEF it is an important signal that France and Germany are simultaneously establishing a European governance organisation for GAIA-X. ▪ Giving all sectors of the economy a major boost to sovereign digitisation is undoubtedly an important prerequisite to foster European companies’ competitiveness in the future. ▪ As all companies in Europe are highly dependent on trustworthy data ecosystems, the ability to securely access, share and use data will determine the leadership in the digital economy. Therefore, BDI and MEDEF strongly support small and medium-sized enterprises and all other industrial sectors to become active players in the new data driven economy. ▪ The launch of GAIA-X comes right on time to facilitate the secure transfer of data within the industrial sector. GAIA-X makes an important contribution to ensure open and uniform interfaces, at the same time. This gives an important boost to data transfer across company boundaries and the creation of sector-specific data ecosystems. ▪ In the coming months, it is crucial to involve as many providers and users of cloud services as possible in the work of the organisation. GAIA-X has a high demand potential in business, science and public administration. All interested parties who share GAIA-X's values should be involved in the project.
