From Fun Times to Difficult Decisions

Healthy Texan Pediatrics

Note from the Publisher Shelley Weiss, MD, FA AAP Board Certified Pediatrician n

It’s fun to be Irish, I admit it, even if I am only 1/4 Irish. I love the heritage, the history, the culture and especially the music. Every year my whole family heads to the North Texas Irish Festival at Fair Park. It’s one of the most fun events that we attend each year and try not to miss! My kids love to get their face painted, do crafts, and dance the hours away. This year my mom, daughter, myself and my brother’s girlfriend all got something painted. I haven’t done that in years. Yet when my kids ask if they are Irish, always say “just a little bit.” Their dad is Canadian and I am an American, both of us have a variety of cultures mingled in our heritage. I use this to explain to my kids that they are not this or that, but that they should not identify themselves with one particular piece of their past. They should embrace all of it and enjoy being who they are, unique individuals that live in a multicultural community and a multicultural world.

What my children learn at festivals and events is about embracing difference and accepting all types of people into their lives. There are many fun events coming up in the next few months. Keep an eye on our calendar and take your kids to one or two. It can be fun, exciting and educational for the whole family. Something else that I love is networking. I love meeting new people and finding ways that I can help them to grow their business. I have met many interesting, wonderful and helpful people since I started my company 6 years ago. One of those people is Bob Gibbons, owner of Reata Commercial Realty. Bob and I were members of a great group called Team Networking. When we were ready to find office space, my husband and I sat down with Bob and he helped us first figure out exactly what we needed. Then he helped us find the perfect location in Plano. He was great to work with and I always appreciate his help and advice. Recently, he featured our company in his monthly newsletter and took this picture of me in my office. Networking has led me to many great relationships over the years, it is a great way to find trustworthy people to do business with as well as grow your own business! The loose theme of this issue is around Financial Planning for Families. We have 4 very different articles that

all touch on this theme, from being a Mom CEO to planning for divorce. One article focuses on funding for child care, what your options are and how to make the best choice for your budget and for your child. Talking about my finances is not my favorite subject and I have to work hard at staying on top of planning for work and home. Many times home falls by the wayside. But articles like the ones on divorce and why you need a will make me stop and take a look again. While divorce is not a fun topic to discuss or even one you think you will ever have to think about, the article is worth perusing. As I was reading this article, it made me think about my own financial responsibility to myself and my family. If something were to happen, would I be ready? It’s also important to make sure you have a will in place. If something were to happen to you and/or your husband are you prepared? Are you sure that your children are taken care of? This thought terrifies me and my husband and I have worked hard to ensure that our children will be in the hands of the right person to take care of them. It’s not fun to talk about death, but it’s less fun to think about what may happen to my children if something were to happen to me and my husband. These facts of life make you stop and think. It makes me want to celebrate life and live each day to it’s fullest. It’s why I tell my kids and husband and parents and .... that I love them every chance I get. That’s why I teach my children to embrace and celebrate life and death.

What Parents Can do to Help Children Prepare for Tests Like TAKS by Joe Merrell

M

any of you have children who have just taken their first TAKS test. Maybe your child was scared or nervous. Maybe she didn’t do as well as she would have liked. You are already thinking about the next set of tests to come. I have spoken with many parents who are unsure how to help their children when it comes to preparing for the TAKS test. Most know that their child should get good night’s sleep and have a healthy brekfast prior to the test. Some parents even spend a good deal of time working through TAKS prep books so their child can have that extra edge. But there are many ways to help your child that can be done at any time to help them think like

Page 6

a critical test-taker. Knowing and implementing some of the following ideas will not only help your child with test-taking in general, but will also create an environment where child and parent can work and learn together. When your child reads articles in magazines or newspapers, or even after watching news or documentaries on TV, ask about what he or she has read or seen. Ask what the main idea is and what the supporting details are. These are elements students need to identify on standardized tests. Understanding an author’s purpose is a valuable test-taking skill, too. When your child is watching TV, ask what he or she thinks the purpose of specific ads and programs might be. To improve your child’s ability to describe characters, make a game of it… name people you know and ask for three-word descriptions of each, based on what they do, how they look, how they act or talk and so on. When the family’s finished with the newspaper or a magazine, pick an article and ask your child to go through it underlining key words. When you see movies with your child, ask questions like “What’s the setting for this story? What’s the author’s purpose? Could this really happen?” Help your child understand reference sources by setting up situations for him or her to use them, like looking up words in the dictionary and synonyms in a thesaurus, subjects in an encyclopedia, places in an atlas, stores in the phone book and so on. With a younger child, be sure he or she learns how to read a clock and a thermometer, how to tell coins apart and what they’re worth. When your child gets excited about subjects or events, encourage

him or her to write little stories about them… starting with an interesting hook, establishing the main idea and supporting it with details, and building up to a high point. Pose simple math problems around the home… like counting how many socks are in the drawer and how many are left when you remove a pair. Practice geometry around the house by asking your child to identify shapes of household objects, measure the perimeter and area of each room and so on. Have your child look for graphs, charts and tables in magazines and newspapers and explain the information found in them. Always be on the lookout for opportunities for your child to practice math, reading and other skills… at the dinner table, traveling in the car, during sporting events, watching TV or movies or talking about the day’s events… and try to make it fun! There are so many things to do with your children. These are just some ideas but you could probably come up with more or even fine tune these to suit your child’s learning style. The key is to demonstrate how important learning is. It is applied everywhere and in everything we do. Lastly, always remember to tell your kids that their performance on the TAKS or any other test does not have any impact on your love for them. The confidence they gain from that one statement may be the difference between passing and failure. Joe Merrell is the Director of Learning at KnowledgePoints. Seven CEO skills moms can use to create wealth from home successful mom and a successful chief executive officer share superiority in nearly identical skills:

A

Negotiation: • A CEO finesses lower interest rates on a loan. • A MomEO offers to do her landlord’s bookkeeping in exchange for a reduction in rent. • A CEO talks a mid-level manager into taking early retirement. • A MomEO cajoles her middle child into an early bedtime. Crisis Management • A CEO makes headlines when he meets a production schedule despite a labor strike. • A MomEO finds a last-minute babysitter for a sick child, so she can take her infant who just fell down the stairs into the hospital emergency room. Then she picks up the dog from the vet, packs her husband’s suitcase for a business trip, and fills prescriptions for both children and the dog. After all this she makes dinner! Financial Acumen • A CEO studies the real estate market and snatches up a dozen distressed properties he can use to expand his business. • A MomEO studies sales and clips coupons so she can stretch her grocery budget by 50 percent. Multitask Efficiency • A CEO is talking to a supplier in Tokyo, a buyer in Milan, and a banker in Los Angeles. At the same time he’s signing letters, tipping a masseuse, and ushering his noon appointment into the office. • A MomEO interrupts a phone conversation with her son’s teacher three times to answer call-waiting signals from the pediatrician, the cable company, and someone selling

time-shares in Florida, while she is also making dinner, paying bills, and holding a colicky baby on her hip. Budgeting • A CEO who runs finances into the red has to face company shareholders and the possibility of layoffs. • A MomEO who is short of cash at the end of the month must face her family and the probability of late-fee notices and dunning phone calls. Bottom-Line Mentality • A CEO pays midtown Manhattan rent only if the forty-sixth floor office space is crucial to profit-making potential; otherwise, he leases a warehouse in New Jersey. He has to be hardhearted enough to reduce payroll and to cancel holiday bonuses when sales fall behind expenses.

It is known as the story of the virtuous or noble woman. This lady was a mother who owned two businesses. Her clientele were wealthy men. Her business was so profitable she became a real estate investor. Her husband was a political figure with a lot of influence in the city. She had her own personal household staff, and her children were proud of her. This mom’s story appears in the Bible! I believe this is God’s way of saying that He wants us to use all of the gifts and talents He has given us. Excerpt from AS A MOM THINKETH; A MOTHER’S GUIDE TO UNLIMITED WEALTH by Del-Metri Williams. Del-Metri Williams holds an M.B.A. in marketing and management, as well as a B.S. in Business Administration. She is the founder and president of Mom Executive Officers (MomEOs). Williams is married and the mother of two children. w w w. m o m e x e c u t i v e o f f i c e r s . c o m info@momthink.co f @ m

• A MomEO pays rental premiums to keep her children in the best school district even though she could live in much nicer quarters on the other side of town. And in lean times, she has to weigh the pay-back potential of hiring a tutor for her daughter who wants to get into medical school versus hiring a voice coach for her Broadway-bound son. Leadership • A CEO inspires his team to work weekends, forfeit vacation time, and miss family functions in order to complete an important project on schedule. • A MomEO convinces her husband to miss Monday Night Football, her seventeen-year-old son to drive her five-year-old daughter to a pajama party, and her ten-year-old son to do the dishes so that she can take a night class at the local college. Personal success does not have to be at odds with parental success. And this is not just a twenty-first century concept—there is a proverb thousands of years old that supports this concept.

by G. Kyle White One rarely expects their life to change over dinner. Somehow roast beef and mashed potatoes do not seem conducive to life-altering moments. For Sonya Shannon it actually took several dinners before an idea sparked that would alter the course of her life. “My husband, Jason, invented this game called ‘Three Things About Animals and Only One of Them’s True’. We played it at the dinner table, and the kids really enjoyed it. I told him he should turn the game into a book,” Sonya says. About two weeks later, Jason presented her with the completed manuscript. Sonya began to research the children’s book industry. To her disappointment, she found that publishers weren’t interested in nonfiction science or animal books. Rather than sharing the bad news with Jason, Sonya turned to an idea that had long intrigued her. “I thought ‘What better way to launch my own publishing company than with this type of project?’ He’s married to me, so he’s not going to sue

me, or (laughs g ) hopefully not divorce me. And I get the chance to learn the publishing process from beginning to end while working with someone who wouldn’t put a lot of pressure on me.” Headquartered from the couple’s North Richland Hills home, CatsCurious Press, with the imprint CatsScratch Books, joined the ranks of small, independent publishing firms. First, Sonya tried to schedule book signings for the upcoming title. Selecting a random, brand-name bookstore, she lucked upon an employee willing to offer some good advice. “Since the book had not been published at that point, she wanted to know if it appeared in Books in Print. I thought, ‘Ummm, no, but I’ve heard of Books in Print’, so I wrote that down. “Then, she asked if I had an ISBN number. I replied ‘No, but I’m going to apply for one really soon’. She very nicely said that when I had these things to call her back. I was excited because she didn’t yell at me and call me a loser.” Since Three Things g About Animals

North Texas Kids: Your Family Guide to Raising Happy, Healthy Kids!

… And Onlyy One of Them’s True! is a picture book, she then turned to a personal friend and portrait artist, Janie Johnson, to produce the artwork. “I didn’t want cartoon animals,” Sonya says. “I wanted realistic animals since this was a science book. Janie was looking for a chance to try something new, so it was a good opportunity for her, too.” With the artwork finished, Sonya now needed to assemble the book. What normally involves teams of people, she would have to accomplish by herself. To make this happen, she turned to a computer program with which she was very familiar: PowerPoint. “Since I work full-time, I don’t have a lot of extra time. I realized that learning a new piece of software was too daunting.” Her past experience allowed her to easily move text and images to achieve a pleasing arrangement. Additionally, working on a tight budget, she saved money by using the familiar application. Turning the pages into PDF files, Sonya then prepared to send the book to the printers. She selected a local printer, and began to learn that her inexperience could be costly. At the printer, she discovered that the landscape format for her cover was too large to be produced on a digital press. An off-set press, her only other option, increased her cost to $5 for each cover. By the time one copy of the book was produced it cost $12. A shock since she had priced each book to retail at $12.99. “It was my inexperience with the whole process that cost us the money. It was an expensive mistake, but without learning it, the projects I am working on now would not have been quite as successful,” she says. With the finished work in hand, Sonya then began to market the work. She first approached the owner of Brystone Children’s Bookstore in Watauga. “I walked up to owner and told her I was a small publisher and that I would like to put my book in her shop. She looked at the book and stroked it with her hand. I took that as a good sign. When people like something, they want to touch and feel it,” she said. The owner took six copies at a fifty-percent discount off the retail

price. While it was a loss, Sonya was excited to have the book in the store. About three days later, the bookstore sent her an email requesting twentyfive additional copies. “I was floored. I thought, thank goodness I have that many.” The store had shown Three Things g About Animals … And Only y One of Them’s True! to the head librarian of the Keller school district. Impressed by the work’s unique subject, the librarian ordered all twenty-five copies. With a success to her credit, Sonya then enrolled with the Amazon.Com Advantage program. To her dismay she learned that a fifty five-percent discount would be taken off the retail price of each book. “I had already paid $12 a piece for books that I was selling for $12.99. Which means that every time I sold a book on Amazon, I was basically giving it away,” she laments. Next, she learned that Baker and Taylor, Inc., the world’s largest book wholesaler, offered a small press partner program. Always cost conscious, Sonya elected to utilize the free program where the company warehoused her book, but did not promote the title. “I had no idea what I was supposed to do,” she says. “Later I learned that about four months before the book comes out, I should send out review copies to newspapers. While I didn’t do that, I learned how to better promote the other books that I had planned.” CatsScratch Books next released Cooking g Your Way y to Romance by Carl R. Wendtland followed by the recent anthology of gothic romances Bound in Skin. With excitement in her voice, Sonya looks forward to the day she can leave her full-time job to focus solely on her publishing business. “Publishing is a growing process. I know by this time next year I’m going to realize all these things that I didn’t know then, that I do know now. I’m not sure when I’ll know it all, if I ever do. Each time I turn around, there is something new to learn.” Additionally, Sonya advised me that Three Things g About Animals . . . . and Only y One of Them’s True! is on its second printing, and Jason’s newest book (also published by CatsCurious) Three Things g About Bugs... g and Only y One of Them’s True! was recently released.

If you are like most people, you once thought that your marriage would last forever. But now, you may have the sinking realization that divorce may be in your future. A good marriage requires the commitment of both parties. As to divorce, Texas is a “no fault” state. Therefore, if one spouse wants a divorce, the divorce will occur. We all know that parties to a troublesome marriage should work through communication and counseling to try to make the marriage work. However, for some spouses, the decision is out of their hands. Others believe they have given the marriage their best try and that divorce is their only option. If divorce is a possibility for you, what can you do to prepare? 1. Identify your assets. The importance of this cannot be stressed enough. Obtain all of the information you can about your assets before a divorce proceeding begins.

2. Gather and copy all financial documents you can find. d Make copies of bank statements, brokerage firm statements, retirement account statements (such as IRAs, 401(k) s, and pension), tax returns, tax documents, credit card statements, utility bills, wills, deeds, insurance statements, appraisals of your house, documents pertaining to the purchase of your house and other real estate, correspondence regarding inheritances, documents that will confirm property you brought into the marriage or inherited, etc. Additionally, inventory your safe deposit box. Put the copies of documents in a safe secure place - outside the house - such as your office, or with a parent or sibling. Do not keep them in your car or under the bed.

3. Establish and protect your credit. Get a copy of your credit report. Obtain a credit card in your own name. Do not sign any contracts with your spouse. 4. Protect your separate property. Separate property includes all assets you acquired before your marriage, gifts and inheritances you received during the marriage, and portions of proceeds from personal injury suits. Protect and preserve this property. Keep it separate from property acquired during the marriage. 5. Be careful about debt. Pay off your debt when you can, especially debt in your name or in the names of you and your spouse. Do not incur new debt in your name or jointly with your spouse. Remember that agreements and decrees apportioning debt are not binding on third parties such as the Internal Revenue Service or a credit card company. 6. Be smart about taxes. If you have IRS problems, meet with a CPA or a tax attorney. As to returns that have not yet been filed, if you believe you will owe taxes, consult with a divorce attorney before considering filing a joint return with your spouse. Never file a joint return with your spouse if your spouse is dishonest. 7. Prepare and protect your property, health and home. Protect your valuable jewelry and items of property that are irreplaceable by putting them in a safe place outside your house and vehicle. Take care of your immediate medical, vision and dental needs. Do not move out of the house. Do not enter into written agreements with your spouse without first consulting an attorney. 8. Determine your budget. Make a list of your household income and expenses. Determine what your household actually spends. Consider what your budget will be for yourself if you are divorced.

North Texas Kids: Your Family Guide to Raising Happy, Healthy Kids!

9. Hone your job skills. Once you are divorced, you will almost certainly need to be employed. If your job skills are rusty or outdated take some classes at your local college. 10. Consider counseling. An unbiased counselor can help you focus on what you need to prepare for your future. But remember, if custody of your children is at issue, what you say to your counselor is not privileged. Be careful as to what you say. 11. Update yourself. f If you have not done so already, now is the time for a make over. Update your hair, make-up and business clothes (choose timeless business wear). 12. Make sure you have a network of friends. They will be a good support for you in your divorce. 13. Don’t move out of the marital residence before consulting with a lawyer. 14. Be very involved with your children. Divorce is difficult for children of all ages. They need to feel very secure in the love of both

parents. Under no circumstances should you say anything negative about your spouse to or in the presence of your children. 15. Consult with an attorney. Be informed. Know the laws and guidelines regarding divorces. Know the ways a divorce can be handled. If divorce is a certainty, hostile litigation is not. Learn about collaborative law and mediation before your divorce begins. Nancy B. Amick is a board certified family law attorney who has over 25 years of experience. ugs, snakes, and insects are a fascination to many young children and even the seemingly squeamish are curious about tiny creatures with lots of legs. April is a great time to pay attention to the thousands, probably millions, of insects that live on and in our world. While exploring this simple concept, don’t omit common places like the garage, carports, recycling bins, shadowy gardens, and come by Heritage Farmstead where we host a special April insect program “Now That Bugs Me!” designed specifically for pre-schoolers. Remember, the purpose of these activities is to encourage the development of critical thinking skills, allow for exploration of the world close by, and facilitate a strong bond between adult and child. Visit your local library and read a few books on this theme before and after your adventure. As you head out the door, bring with you a backpack filled with educational tools: color pencils, clip board, plain paper, ruler, scissors, first-aid kit, wad of string (– hey, you never know…) and anything else you think you might need! Theme: The simple concept of insects; what they are, where they live, and what they do. Where: Explore under rocks and fallen tree trunks, along nature walks, in the Children’s Area at the Dallas Zoo, at Plano’s Cockroach Museum, and maybe… under your older son’s bed...ugh! For the 2 year-old: • Search for all sorts of creepy, crawly insects under rocks, inside dead wood, in sitting water, in the air, etc. • Identify the insect’s colors and number of legs, wings, antennae, body parts, etc. • Count each insect as you go.

For the 3 year-old: • Catch an insect in a jar and watch it for a while. Don’t forget to let it go! • Introduce motion vocabulary – slither, crawl, slime, fly, march, etc. – to describe how the insect moves. • Identify which motion makes the insects move. For the 4 year-old: • Leave a bit of food on the back patio or front walk to see if you can lure an insect to that spot. Which foods (sweet, salty, solid, liquid, etc.) attract insects the best? • Using books, photos, and magazines, find pictures of a variety of insects and compare to those you found. • Night brings its own insects. Go on a nighttime insect hunt and find differences and similarities between nighttime and daytime insects. • Ask: Did you know that some people around our world eat insects?! For the 5 year-old: • Record the types of insects you see. • Make a 2D or 3D insect using wires, paper mache, paints, fabric, netting, etc. Label the insect’s parts. Include – head, jaw, legs, antennae, thorax, body, wings, etc. • Research different types of insects and discover their special role in our environment and gardens. • Ask:How do insects help us? Here’s a fun and easy craft to do with the kiddos, that also makes a great gift! In the Art Department of your local craft store, they have these 5” x 7” canvas panels that make great wall hangings. Supplies: • canvas panel • acrylic paint • foam brushes • ribbon • photo corners • rub-on phrase (scrapbooking supply) • embellishments (flower, brad, etc.) • favorite photo Instructions: 1. Paint canvas and set aside to dry. Depending upon the color, multiple coats may be required. 2. Accent the edges of the canvas with a contrasting color of paint by lightly rubbing the edges with the foam brush. (I used a salmon pink in this example.) 3. Let the paint dry completely before proceeding. 4. Secure ends of ribbon on backside of canvas with staples. Tie ribbon ends together to create a bow. 5. Attach photo with decorative photo corners. 6. Add rub-on phrase. 7. Decorate with embellishments. www.NorthTexasKids.com

re you the master of your life or a slave to it? Do you have enough time for those things in your life that are most important to you? Ten years ago I was handling public/media relations for a large international biotech corporation. The culture was typical of most large companies: they expected long hours, work/life balance was never discussed and vacations were few and far between. I had not had a vacation in two years when my girlfriend suggested we take a trip to Europe for two weeks. We were both single and I badly needed a break, so I jumped at the chance. At the last minute she had to cancel, so I signed up for an adventure tour and headed to Amsterdam alone to meet my group. Ten days into the trip, we stopped in Munich and visited Dachau, the Nazi concentration camp. The experience was chilling, to say the least. As I walked through the barracks, I picked up mental postcards that remain etched in my mind, even today. After the walking tour, I left the group and walked outside with my journal, settling under a large shady tree to write. I asked myself, what is one word that encapsulates my experience at the concentration camp? I wrote the word down in my journal. As I finished, the image of my boss and my job in Austin flashed

through my mind. Suddenly my body was wracked with nausea and I became sick. Reeling from the intense experience, I sat, stunned. What in the world did my PR job in Austin have to do with Dachau, and why was this connection making me ill? I slowly looked down at my journal to the page where I had been writing. In huge block letters was the word OPPRESSION. I had made a visceral connection between how the prisoners must have felt at Dachau and how my current job made me feel. (I recognize there is no way to compare the two on an intellectual level—this was just my emotional response.) My gut feeling was really trying to tell me something. A week later, while flying back from Paris to Austin, I heard an interview on National Public Radio with a woman named Carol Orsborn, author of Inner Excellence: Spiritual p Principles p to Life-Driven Business. The day I got home, I bought her book, stayed up all night reading it, went in to work the next day and (to the great surprise of my director) quit my job. I ended up taking a three-month sabbatical, and it became crystal clear that the time had come for me to reclaim my life and my sense of balance. The experience at Dachau had forever changed the way I looked at and managed my life. How can you begin to reclaim your life and experience more

balance on a day-to-day basis? In my work with thousands of clients in the area of life balance, I have found it helpful to look at approaching and defining balance as having enough time, energy and resources for those things in life that are most important to you. My approach to balanced living focuses on four core strategies: setting priorities and managing your energy, taking time for self-renewal, building a support network and being more present in your life. Picture yourself sitting comfortably on a four-legged stool which completely supports you in feeling more balance in your life.

and professional support do you need to feel nurtured, emotionally healthy and stress-free? Learn to ask for and receive help. Reevaluate your support needs every three months; these change based on your current life stage. Having a support system when going through a transition or stressful time can have a huge impact on how you experience the journey. Be more present in all that you do. Stress and overwhelm are often brought on by dwelling on the past or living in the future. By spending more time living in the present and focusing on what is most important here and now, you’ll feel calmer

Each leg represents a different area, or strategy. Here they are in a little more detail. Strategies and Insights for Balanced Living Know your top priorities and effectively manage your energy. What in life is most important to you? How good are you at managing your energy? What is draining you? What is fueling you? Are you comfortable saying no and not over-committing? Create a Top Life Priorities list and adhere to it! If it’s not one of your top three priorities right now, it’s going to have to wait. Make your self-renewal a priority. By filling your cup first, you’ll have more to give to family, work and creative projects and yourself! You’ll be able to function at your optimum and set an example for healthy, balanced living for those around you. Self-care (on all levels—physical/mental/emotional/ spiritual) is essential to balanced living. Build a personal support system. What type of and how much personal

and be more effective. In general, when we’re living in the present, we experience a greater sense of balance and well-being. One specific way to be more present is to be mindful of how and when we use technology (cell phones, computers, PDAs, email/Internet and telephones). These tools have the tendency to overwork us! Most importantly, realize that you’re in the driver’s seat when it comes to how you manage your career and life (even though it may feel at times like you’re in the back seat or even the trunk!). When making changes, it’s good to start with baby steps and be gentle with yourself. THE COST OF NOT HAVING A WILL

This article provides information of a broad general nature only. The information contained in this article does not constitute legal advice.

• The court will determine who inherits your estate.

Many families put off estate planning tools such as Wills, Powers of Attorney, and Living Wills. Other families will attempt to do this planning on their own, either through Will kits or online forms. Unfortunately, there are many pitfalls for parents in both approaches.

• Your court-appointed executor may have to post a bond to guarantee that s/he is responsibly managing the money the state grants to your underage children.

• The court will appoint an executor for your estate.

One of the biggest reasons that parents put off their estate planning (or do it themselves) is the perceived cost. However, the cost of not having this planning often greatly exceeds the cost of going to an attorney and having the planning done right the first time. Moreover, procrastination also places the burden on your family to have to worry about the time and money to

sort through matters during a time they should be focused on grieving and healing. Part of the problem is a simple matter of priorities. What amazes me is the number of families that are getting a new living room furniture set, or replacing their washer and dryer, or are getting the newest flat screen television. Yet many of these same families don’t have a Will, haven’t designated a guardian for their children, and don’t have a trust established for their minor children. For the same cost (or less) of these material items, parents can ensure that their children are protected if something should happen to them. As for preparing your own documents, many of my clients who had purchased Will kits eventually came to me because the box is still sitting on their desk because they

North Texas Kids: Your Family Guide to Raising Happy Healthy Kids!

never got around to actually filling everything out! There are many benefits to going to a professional to guide you through the process, especially making sure that people see it through to the end so that their planning is valid and enforceable. The cost of making a mistake can far exceed the cost of going to an attorney. Some of the most important benefits of going to an attorney versus no planning or do-it-yourself planning: Beneficiary Designations: If your beneficiaries of your life insurance and retirement accounts are not properly coordinated with your Will, then those assets will not be controlled by the trust or trustees established in your Will. Also, your estate may be liable for inheritance taxes, even if you have tax planning in your Will. The same is true for the way your bank accounts are titled, so such accounts should be reviewed as well. Texas has specific guidelines and laws that most online forms and Will kits do not address. For instance, Texas allows for what is called an “independent administration that allows an executor to carry out

the wishes in your Will essentially free of court interference. If language requesting an independent administration is not in a Will, then the default is for the court to supervise the entire probate process, which can be very costly and timeconsuming. Your executor or trustee will have to post bond if your Will does not specifically waive that requirement. There is no question that families have to be very careful with their budgeting and money can be very tight at times. However, this is not the type of planning that should be put off or done in the most inexpensive and generic manner. The cost of not having this planning done correctly will greatly outweigh the cost of putting these documents into place. After all, these are matters that concern your family and loved ones the most. If you don’t have a WILL, the state of Texas has one for you! midst the overflow of extra school notices this time of year, one letter may have the potential to dramatically impact the rest of a child’s life. News of an upcoming scoliosis screening at school, such as those scheduled for the North Texas independent school districts (ISDs) this spring, is slated to hit backpacks soon. For a child and parent, receiving the notice of a scoliosis screening may create some anxiety stemming from the unknown. Unfortunately, this may cause some parents to choose to ignore the opportunity to address detecting this progressive condition that can cause the spine to curve or twist into a “C” or “S” shape. With 3 percent of children in the United States developing scoliosis and three to five of every 1,000 children in the U.S. developing spinal curves that are considered severe enough to need treatment (National Institutes of Health), the condition should not be ignored. Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas, a premier pediatric orthopedic hospital in the world, has trained more than 400 school nurses in the North Texas area as part of our scoliosis screening training program. Several North Texas ISDs and private schools are slated to participate in the hospital’s training program in 2008. Scoliosis should be screened for most frequently between the ages of 9 and 14 when a child’s growth is most rapid. School nurses serve as the frontline for early detection of scoliosis.

Generally, the scoliosis school exam requires a child to stand upright and bend forward at the waist, parallel to the floor, while the school nurse checks for the visible signs of scoliosis. Signs and symptoms of scoliosis include uneven shoulders, a prominence of the shoulder blade and waistline discrepancies. During the exam, some school nurses utilize a scoliometer, a simple tool that measures curvature of the spine. A Parent’s Perspective p One of our patients, 12-yearold Jac of Frisco, Texas, who was diagnosed with scoliosis by a school nurse, is being treated for scoliosis at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children. Jac’s mother did not immediately heed the school nurse’s notices, but now proactively encourages other parents to “learn to listen to school nurses” and respond by seeking appropriate medical attention for their children. Jac’s mom shared that just weeks prior to Jac’s first scoliosis screening at school, Jac had been to her regular physician twice, including for a wellness checkup, and showed no signs of scoliosis. This led to her dismissal of the school nurse’s scoliosis communications. Jac’s scoliosis progressed quickly though with a coinciding growth spurt, resulting in a noticeable 35 degree curve in less than two months’ time. Ultimately, Jac’s mom did take action on the nurse’s letter after Jac underwent a scoliosis recheck. As protocol suggests, Jac’s mom had her daughter examined by her primary care physician, and the physician referred Jac to Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children to undergo treatment for her scoliosis.

North Texas Kids: Your Family Guide to Raising Happy Healthy Kids!

Researchers at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children recently identified the first gene, CHD7, associated with idiopathic scoliosis, the most common type of scoliosis. The hope is that the discovery will one day lead to identifying the cause of the spinal curvature. Through research we have also found that the earlier the problem is diagnosed, the more effective the treatment will be. Left untreated, scoliosis can cause many challenges and can be debilitating. In some extreme cases, it may even be life threatening, but with appropriate screening and early intervention, children who are diagnosed with scoliosis may lead happy, healthy lives. Go to www.tsrhc.org/scoliosi g s for more information about the cause, diagnosis and treatment of scoliosis so you can stay “ahead of the curve.

In an effort to prevent her curve from getting worse during her growth phase and to guard against related medical issues in the future, Jac wears a back brace full-time with the exception of during heavy activity levels, such as when she is cheerleading. Making g Progress g The treatment and management of scoliosis has come a long way. Today’s treatment options are much more effective and less inconvenient for the patient. Doctors evaluate curves by their location, shape, pattern and cause and use this information to determine the best treatment method. Treatment depends on underlying condition, the size of the curve and how much growth potential remains for the

patient. Observation, bracing and surgery are the three treatment methods for scoliosis. Curves less than 20 degrees may not need any treatment except to be checked by a physician on occasion until the adolescents have stopped growing. Braces have proven to be effective in moderately severe scoliosis, curves between 30 and 50 degrees, in growing adolescents. Surgery, when necessary, requires less than a week in the hospital. With surgery, no cast or brace is required and almost complete curve correction can be achieved. Scoliosis appears most often in adolescent girls and has shown a tendency to run in families.

Focus on Our Advertisers A 5 – 6 – 7 - 8 SPEAK! by Sheryl B. Ambers

by Gila Vinokur

Not the typical pattern for this call to start a dance – but this is not your typical dance class. S.T.A.R. Therapy Programs has given dance a new purpose – to improve communication. Verbal communication is how most people communicate. Yet, that form is not always the most natural and effective means of expression, especially for children who face communication challenges. Dance is a form of expression that is fun, and fulfilling to many of our senses. For children who may struggle with their expressive language, S.T.A.R. Therapy Programs uses dance, as a strong vehicle for addressing communication needs. Research continually shows that children learn best when they are having fun. Dance is fun, and provides an exciting new avenue for children, whom are often too familiar with typical therapy rooms and activities. Dance and communication require many of the same skills. Like verbal communication, dance requires attention toward listening skills, following directions, and a closeness to other children. Children explore some of the social-physical aspects of communication through dance by learning about the concept of shared space, locating their own space, and moving in and out of the various spaces. They learn new ways to move their bodies, and to be aware of others in the class (so they can acknowledge others and not bump into friends). Some children (especially those whom have been identified on the autism spectrum), may need to learn to become comfortable with being close to other children. Dance can approach that objective in an age appropriate manner. Children also have the Page 30

North Texas Kids

Why Speech & Drama?

opportunity to make choices, and practice their speech sounds. In a typical speech therapy program, many young children initially address imitating speech sounds and oral movements. For those children whom first require learning to imitate, dance offers a fun way to learn about imitation using fine and gross motor activities paired with speech. Whether a child is learning to imitate, produce certain speech sounds, or increase the number of words in their utterances, dance provides an age appropriate way to address those needs, and works especially well for those children whom prefer not to sit. Dance also allows children an opportunity to use their imaginations. The music is often very helpful in creating a mood, which can be used to address the different emotions that are often attached to various songs and dances. Props also help to keep activities fun, and allow children a tangible item with which to pretend. This can be very helpful to some children, and adds to the excitement, which helps maintain a high interest level. S.T.A.R. Therapy ProgramsSM now offers Creative Dance. These classes are led by experienced speech-language pathologists, who have strong dance backgrounds. Like other S.T.A.R. Therapy Program classes, these classes are parent-child, and offer unique opportunities for children to address their individualized objectives in a small group setting. Parents receive objective papers at the start of each class, which outline how they could address their children’s objectives during the various class activities. The speech-language pathologists also include weekly home practice suggestions, so the objectives can be targeted throughout the week. These exciting new classes are limited to 8 children. The importance of encouraging creativity and self confidence in your Child. We all want the best for our children and as a result, many children today are privileged enough to be exposed to many after school and week-end enrichment activities. Some popular ones are soccer, gymnastics, dance martial arts etc. However, there is one activity that is quite popular in Europe and Africa but, to date, has had very little exposure here in the United States. This activity is Speech & Drama, which provides an exceptional learning experience and addresses so many elements of developmental, social and creative growth. Developmental growth: Speech p : Students are exposed to fun games that develop speech. Speech & Drama teaches public speaking either improvisation topics or a poem or prose from memory. When a child or adult, for that matter, has the self-confidence to express a thought, then speaking in front of a class or audience becomes a fearless experience. Long term exposure to Speech & Drama coaches this ability. It is critical to speak clearly and project your voice whether you are in a classroom or in a board room and we all know that skills that are learned while we are young are inculcated and never ‘unlearned’ How would you like your child to have this advantage? and how many adults wish they had it themselves? Motor coordination: These Speech & Drama games also focus on both gross and fine motor coordination, while learning fun skills such as mime, movement, puppeteering, expression, and stage direction.

Lateral thinking: g Students are taught to think outside the box and create a thought, story and then production from nothing. Social Growth: Exposure to Speech & Drama will channel most children to learn how to emulate behaviors and insert them into appropriate real life situations. Bashful, verbose, theatrical, hyperactive, thoughtful, etc. are all types of personalities that will benefit from Speech & Drama. Mixed ages also encourage social growth by older students modeling for younger ones and younger students emulating the older ones. There are up to four years of mixed ages in any one group. Creative Growth: Students are encouraged to orchestrate a whole production from creating their own stories, building their own props (puppets, masks, hats, puppet theatres, etc) and backdrops and creating their own costumes. Speech & Drama will stretch their creative brains! Speech and Drama students are usually adjudicated each year in an exam where each child has to present a prepared and unprepared talk, a mime or one act, in either a group or alone. This usually depends on the curriculum or grade the child is in. The adjudicator is ‘imported’ from the Trinity College of London, England and examination credits may be earned for post school credits. A useful resource to check out is the Trinity College website www. trinitycollege.co.uk Center Stage Drama is leading the way in the metroplex area for Speech & Drama instruction. Affording Quality Childcare on ANY Budget By Ben Robinson

that develop their skills and broaden their knowledge. Higher tuitions also help pay for a child’s learning environment. For example, some schools have Web cams, which allow parents to observe their children throughout the day and lets teachers know that someone is always watching. In addition, it helps fund things like quality toys and learning materials, furnishings and age appropriate playgrounds. Look for stringent security measures. Security cameras, fingerprint readers and access cards are well worth the added peace of mind. Because of all the offerings and services quality childcare centers and preschools offer, they can come with a higher price tag. According to Linda Smith, Executive Director of The National Association of Child Care Resource and Referral Agencies (NACCRA), “Families are likely to spend more on child care then they do for health care and food combined. With child care costs as high as or higher than housing costs in most states, middle income families struggle to afford any child care, much less high quality child care.” If you don’t think you can afford to pay for a quality childcare center or preschool, then think again. Several financing options are available – some that will even allow you to fund the cost over several years. Here are some considerations for each: Cash - While cash is the most common form of payment for childcare, the downfall is that you end up with less take-home pay. And, less take-home pay may prevent you from providing your family with the lifestyle and pleasures you and they crave. Credit Cards – In a crunch, such as during times of job loss, credit cards can help get you through financial difficulties. However, in the long-run, credit cards can create

more financial challenges. Many of us have experienced the high interest rates that make paying off credit cards difficult. And, if you consider the yearly fees and high late payment fees many credit cards carry, this financing option can be a very costly one. Bank Loans – Securing a bank loan can be a very tedious process if you’re trying to find the best interest rate possible. And, the fine print can be confusing and costly. For example, home equity loans accrue interest on the entire loan since you are borrowing all the funds on day one and many have prepayment penalties, so there’s no financial gain from paying the loan off early. Financing Programs – New financing programs with competitive rates are starting to surface. Parents can obtain various loan rates and offers at once – by simply entering the loan parameters on a provider’s Web site. The process is simple, and interest rates are many times lower than those offered by credit cards. And, because payments are spread out over several years, your monthly tuition payments can be drastically lowered, allowing you to have more take-home pay. In addition, these programs offer flexible repayment schedules which allow you to vary your payment amounts from month to month depending on your needs. And, you can make additional payments to pay your line of credit off early and avoid interest fees. These programs also allow you to borrow only what you need from month to month, so you can keep the accrued principal low and minimize accrued interest. A quality childcare or preschool program is critical in your child’s early years. So, before you settle for a school that merely fits into your budget, consider how you can give your child the quality care and foundation they deserve. After all, there are more childcare financing options today than ever before.

Ben Robinson is the CEO of Dallas-based I Pay Childcare. The company’s Educate EarlyTM loan offers both secured and unsecured loan products at lower interest rates than many consumer credit cards. The program also offers significant benefits to childcare centers and preschools by ensuring prompt tuition payments and reducing enrollment turnover. For more information, visit www.ipaychildcare. p y com or call 1.866.543.7427.

Nothing is more precious than your children. And, choosing the right childcare is critical in those early years, particularly because caregivers will spend more time with your children during the work week than you will. With this thought in mind, quality and not cost should be the biggest factor in the selection of a childcare or preschool program. When evaluating a childcare program for your child, following are a few things to consider – things that make quality schools stand out: The right childcare program can help develop your child’s love of learning. It’s important to determine what educational philosophy a school supports. Developmentally appropriate practices, for example, offer activities that are based on children’s interests. These practices foster a love of learning, curiosity, attention and self-direction. As a result, teachers individualize lessons and teaching methods to meet each child’s needs. Quality programs tend to have lower student-to-teacher ratios. Lower ratios give children more one-on-one attention from teachers. Higher-end childcare centers tend to offer better compensation and benefits to their teachers, such as paid time off and medical insurance. By taking care of their staff, elite childcare centers can retain the best teachers and reduce turnover. A childcare center should offer year-round assessments that evaluate a child’s development in areas such as cognitive thinking, problem-solving, emotional and social skills. These assessments should be shared with parents in parent/teacher conferences or other structured formats to help parents understand their child’s progress. Look forr well-rounded programs that include classes such as music, Spanish and computer classes. While programs vary from school to school, it’s important that children are exposed to a variety of programs

Book Review of Hank the Cowdog and The Dungeon of Doom #44 Reading level: Ages 9-12 Paperback: 144 pages Publisher: Puffin (May 24, 2004) By Alexandria Battle

Once again I’ve overturned my tickle box with Hank, Drover, and the rest of their pals. The Dungeon of Doom (book 44) is a great way to pass the time or to sneak under the covers and have to yourself—but you didn’t hear it from me. Hank is his ranch’s “esteemed” Head of Ranch Security—which is a pretty hefty job for any other mere dog, but Hank is no puppy. Even so, every time Hank turns around his ranch is being invaded by coyotes, monsters, gophers, and even pesky cats. With absolutely no help from the cowardly Drover, the annoying Pete the Barncat, and the ones who “run” the ranch, it’s always another day in the life of a cowdog.

In this adventure, Hank discovers a gopher mound in the same place the cowboys on his ranch are “rounding up” without him—and with some help from Drover and a thirst for redemption; he goes to prevent the cows from falling into a “never-ending tunnel”. But things go downhill from there when Hank— uh—accidentally causes said cows to stampede, getting him into hot water with High Loper. Oops… As punishment, it’s decided that Hankie needs to take a trip to Obedience School—or as Hank calls it, “Doggie Kindergarten”…and that is all I’ll be unfolding for now. This is really a great book—not

only good for laughs but for a bit of enlightenment; now we can see what our pets imagine obedience school to be like—whether they look forward to the new sights or, like Hank, are scared stiff. Former NBA star Bill Walton credits his former college coach John Wooden’s “Pyramid of Success” and the quote “Failing to prepare is preparing to fail” as two of the most important building blocks in his life. Walton says about the 97 year old Wooden, “He has a heart, brain and soul that put him in a position to inspire others to reach levels of success and peace of mind that we could never dream of reaching by ourselves.”

WILL ANYONE UNDERSTAND MY CHILD? My youngest daughter, Kristin, is a wonderful child full of life and eager to take on the whole world. She loves her family, friends, and teachers. She is usually quick to smile but then there are times she does not respond. I think she is just ignoring me, but could it be more than that? I am beginning to wonder. As I look through my notes from my last teacher conference I need some answers: “Smart, often aggressive and hyper, does not often use her words to convey her feelings or needs, distracted, “zoned out”, unpredictable.” When I look at this list I think, this is not the child I see at home. Will anyone understand my child?

Kids in the Kitchen

Brian is 4 1/2 and I am not sure he is really ready for kindergarten. He is shy in public and does not make friends easily. My husband says, “He is our little man of few words”. He talks to us at home. Why does he not say much at school? He loves to run and jump outside, but then again I see him as clumsy. He does not enjoy writing or coloring. He would rather sit close to me and get tight hugs while I read him a story. The teacher at his school says that he is smart and that he will probably do fine in kindergarten. That leaves me wondering. Is there more his dad and I can do for him? Will anyone understand my child?

You may hear any of the following information from your child’s teacher or you may even have these feelings about your child: Your child is shy. • Your child is passive. • Your child is aggressive. • Your child seems frustrated or anxious. • Your child does not use her words. • Your child seems inattentive or “zoned out” at times. • Your child does not make friends easily. • Your child does not complete tasks. • Your child is overly active. • Your child seems distracted. • Does your child act differently at home than at school? • Is your child unpredictable? MY PLACE may be the answer you are looking for! Children grow and thrive best when they are understood developmentally! Our Mission at MY PLACE is to provide a quality educational foundation for all children who, for now, learn differently through personalized instruction in a positive, supportive, and nurturing learning atmosphere. MY PLACE was created to provide a small group educational setting to support the developmental needs of children working to overcome social and communicative challenges that are typically encountered in a traditional school environment. The program is devised to provide a PRE-preschool experience or to supplement a regular school program. MY PLACE is focused on small classes of 1-6 children to 2 instructors, a SpeechLanguage Pathologist and an Educator. This great student teacher ratio produces outstanding results! Each class targets the needs of children with communicative, emotional, and physical challenges. With the guidance of the Educator, age-level academic tasks are appropriately outlined and planned for each session. The interaction of the Speech-Language Pathologist provides ample intervention and assistance for age appropriate communication skills for the social success of each child. The two instructors are Katherine Lunde, Educational Consultant, and Robin Collins, MS-CCC/SLP. Classes are forming for the summer. Please call 972-385-0006 soon to set up an appointment!

t the suggestion of a North Texas Kids reader, we visited Berryhill Baja Grill in North Dallas. Berryhill is a restaurant where you can’t tell what kind of food they serve by its name, although Baja gives you a hint. This restaurant is like a real Mexican place right in Mexico. It has a lot of bright colors like orange and yellow. It’s a large space, open and airy. My dad said it reminded him of being right on the beach. There were even tables that looked like surf boards. There was a small stage with microphones for Karaoke that started later in the evening, and a room for private parties upstairs. Our waiter was very nice and had a sense of humor. We were not sure what to order because they have a large menu and it was our first time there. He was helpful with suggestions. We started with chips and salsa. The chips were very thin and salty, perfect for dipping in the chunky salsa. My brother ordered the chicken strips, which he enjoyed. I had the fish sticks or tempura fish. These were not my favorite, probably because this is not the type of fish that most kids would expect. Other selections from the kids menu include cheese quesadillas and cheese enchilada. Kids’ meals come with jello and a soft drink. My mom had the Baja original fish tacos. These are an award winning specialty of Berryhill. She said they were really good, same tempura fish, but next time she would try the grilled fish tacos. My dad had the Parrilla Pescado Fish Burrito and loved it. It was huge, but he managed to eat it all. The menu also includes traditional options like enchiladas, burritos, chimichangas and different types of Baja tacos. Another specialty is the Berryhill’s tamales. Dessert was not your basic ice cream sundae. They had Cookie of the Day or Tres Leches-3 milk cake with a hint of brandy, or flan. We were once again too stuffed to get desert, so we will have to try these another time. Berryhill Baja Grill also serves breakfast, including breakfast tacos, migas, and other huevos combinations. They are located at Preston and Frankford in North Dallas. I recommend it for good food, excellent service and a fun atmosphere. Do you know of a great kidfriendly a restaurant that Emma should review? Email us at info@northtexaskids.com Emma Bonin is a third-grader at Hughston Elementary.
