Note from the Publisher

Minette Riordan, Ph.D.

New Year, New _____? "When we are motivated by goals that have deep meaning, by dreams that need completion, by pure love that needs expressing, then we truly live life."

Greg Anderson

Yikes, is it really that time again? Do I have to focus on what I want to be different? Do you write resolutions out of habit or because the boss asked you to? Do you ever even look at your resolutions after you write them down? Do these questions sound familiar to you? Do you feel obligated to set new goals? Do you set the same goals every year and never achieve them? Lose weight, clean the house, organize your paperwork... Over the past 20 years these goals have been on my top ten list almost every year. Why? If I knew the answer, I guess they would not appear on my list and my life would be hunky dory. In reality, they are empty goals with no passion behind them. They were the goals someone else (my mother, my husband, the magazine at the grocery stand) said that I should want and strive to achieve. I love the quote by Greg Anderson that says our goals need to have deep meaning. Our motivation and drive come from that feeling of being incomplete without achieving our dreams. I want that for my kids and myself, my husband and my company. I want to model for my kids what it means to have BIG dreams and small dreams, to work towards and accomplish them with passion but also with organization. For several years, I quit writing resolutions for the New Year. I was just doing it out of habit and they were empty goals. Then for a couple

of years, I set intentions for what I hoped to accomplish (how wishywashy is that!) Now that I own a business, I have both personal and professional goals and I do write them down. In 2009, as a company we did a better job of pulling out those goals throughout the year and revising or celebrating our progress. Personally, I could have done a better job of checking progress and acknowledging myself for my successes, no matter how small. We all have busy lives, busy families and we move through most days at a frantic pace without ever stopping to check our progress or acknowledge our achievements. Just reaching Monday with all of the laundry complete is a celebration for me. So this month I wanted to give you some articles to help you set the right kinds of goals and to understand how the power of completion can have a wonderful, positive effect on you. This information will hopefully be insightful for you personally but also help you teach your children the beauty of dreaming BIG and moving towards their dreams. On a more personal note, I am finding the motivation to really make a positive change in my physical well-being that will last the rest of my life. I don't need to be stick thin (never have been and don't really want to be) but I do want to be healthy. I want to be able to sit on the floor and play with my Grandkids when I am in my 60's and if I don't start today, the next 20 years will be gone before I know it. I am so excited to have been taken under the wings of two amazing ladies, the owners of Living Well Dallas, Jenny Bair and Betty Murray. They are

helping me find the deep meaning behind why I never reached my goal of optimal health before. We are doing some serious emotional and behavioral work from the inside out. Read my article on pages 8-9 to learn about this exciting makeover project! For North Texas Kids, we have some BIG dreams for next year, too. We want to continue to flourish and grow in our 8th year in print but we also want to grow our online presence. I am renewing my commitment to our radio show on BlogTalk radio, we are going to amp up our Facebook and blogs to bring you more great information about raising happy, healthy kids. I am dedicated to making sure parents in North Texas have the resources they need. We are committed to having two expos in 2010 - a summer camp fair on Sat. April 24 and our NTK Halloween Extravaganza on Sat. Oct. 30. We hope you will come out and join us. We'd love to meet you! What do you need from us? I wish you would take two or three minutes this month and send me an email about what you want and what you need more of from North Texas Kids. Share you goals with other moms on our Facebook fan page. When you write them down and share them, you give them more power and energy. Remember to dream BIG in 2010. As Greg Anderson says, "then we truly live life." Happy New Year and Happy Reading!

Ready, Set...Goals by Lorraine Brock Why is it that when the new year comes around, adults have plenty of New Year’s goals but we often don't include the entire family? Maybe it's because we consider our kids’ goals unimportant or, even worse, unnecessary because they don't have a vision for themselves. It's true in some cases that a child's goal can be totally off the mark of self help or betterment - like obtaining the next level in a video game or making a wish list of superficial items they want to acquire. However, with some direction from parents, kids can set goals at every level. In our home, my husband and I have three teenage boys. Each year around New Year’s, we get out the pen and paper and sit down together to discuss our goals. This could be done around the dinner table or by having a quiet moment around the fire. In order to get our boys started, we have three main categories for which to set goals: school, personal, and spiritual. This does not mean they can only have three goals; on the contrary, they can have as many goals as they want. But we do ask them to make an effort to improve at least one thing in each of these categories. For example, our youngest son last year listed the following as his goals: • Get a B+ or higher in Math • Walk Strider (our dog) and play ball with him more • Spend more quality time with Dad • Be a more godly and polite young man

While this seems like a pretty mature list of goals…it did not start out that way. If I recall, reaching the next level on a game or buying a new game topped the list at first. But with the direction of what goal setting really was about and the importance our family unit placed on it... the light began to dawn in that little brain. Generally, goal setting is best done as a family, so that others around you can help you meet those goals. Also, written goals are reminders now and treasures for the future by allowing each family member a glimpse back in time. Once we had our goals, there needed to be some accountability throughout the year. I know it's hard for adults to stay focused, much less a child. So periodically we bring the goals out to see the progress we have or have not made. I would suggest that you put on your calendar "check goals" about three times during the year. This will remind you to have scheduled goal checks. You're probably wondering how many goals my three boys actually achieved. Well, I will share. Our youngest son met three of his four goals, our middle son met all of his goals, and our oldest son met half of one goal (out of four). Overall, pretty great results, I'd say. One note of advice: when reviewing the goals, just as with setting them up, go over them as a family; it's accountability. Yes, you will probably have one that is a little slack in meeting some of their goals, but if done with love and much encouragement he or she will see the benefit and growth in their siblings and want to jump aboard. Goal setting each year allows your child to see where they have been and where they are today. Plus they have the added bonus of seeing the process of getting there. They begin to see over time that every decision they make

should help them get closer to their goals. It teaches children to question why they are doing what they are doing. For example, if your child has a goal of working with animals, should they be volunteering in a junior officers’ program? If that's their only time to volunteer, I’d say the better choice would be to find a local veterinary clinic, city pound, zoo or other animal facility where they are able to volunteer. Always strive to keep what you're doing in alignment with your goals. So, grab a cup of coffee for you and hot chocolate for the kids, then spend some time helping each other set goals. You will see over time that each person's goals often become their passion and purpose in life. If you look at my resume and what I have accomplished in my life, it looks like a lot. I am not saying this to brag but to make a point that external achievements don't always make us happy. As some of you know who have been reading the magazine for a while, I struggle with my weight and have been a yo-yo dieter since I was a teenager. Being a business owner led to a more sedentary and stressful lifestyle that caused me to gain about 40 pounds over the last several years. Plus, I turn 45 years old this month and my hormones are changing, my body is changing and I am changing. It feels like my body has grown right along with my business for the last few years, not something that I am happy about or proud of and it's not easy to admit here in writing to you. Being a yo-yo dieter is also something I do not want to teach my young daughter. I knew that I needed some help, that this was not something that I wanted to do on my own or was capable of doing on my own. I also knew that there was more going on than just needing to lose weight. Was there some mental and emotional reason underlying my challenges? Was it just a habit that I could not shake? Were my own thoughts and beliefs about who I am stopping me from reaching my goal of reaching a healthy weight? Was it hormonal? Food allergies? I have tried every diet in the book plus a few but the weight always comes back. I felt like I didn't know what to eat anymore or what to feed my family, there are so many varying plans out there. I also did not want to spend a fortune on some program that might help me in the short term but didn't provide long term support. So I reached out to two amazing women that I have met through my networking and admire for the work they do. I am proud of myself for asking for their help as this is not something easy for me to do. I am used to being in charge and in control! I was also afraid that their program would cost way more money than I could afford. Jenny Bair, MHE and Betty Murray, CN, HHC, RYT are the co-founders of Living Well Dallas, a holistic health and wellness center that specializes in determining what your problems are and helping you create the right program that will lead to a lifetime of optimal health and wellness. When Jenny and I first sat down to talk about what was going on with me, she quickly realized I needed an entire package of self-care, from the inside out. The more I talked to her, I realized that my husband needed to take this journey with me. So we are beginning the makeover journey of a lifetime. I believe we are at the point where we have to make some changes or begin to lose our quality of life. My husband's family has a long history of heart-health issues. Can I tell you how much it scares me to see him be overweight and stressed out and potentially on the road to a heart attack in his forties? I see myself losing energy and enthusiasm. It hurts to sit on the floor with my kids because my joints ache. We are too young and too full of dreams to feel this way and it's no one's fault but our own that we are where we are. Not only did Jenny and Betty give me hope that we could create lasting change in our lives but their program is so affordable. They are genuinely committed to making a difference in people's lives and their passion, knowledge and enthusiasm will help keep us on the right path over the next several months. I am writing about this and making this adventure public because I know that there are so many of you out there who are struggling, whether it is emotionally or physically or both. As women, we spend so little time and money to take care of ourselves that it usually takes us getting sick or having a nervous breakdown before we slow down or stop and take a serious look at what we are creating for ourselves. We pour our hearts and lives into our families, whether we work outside the home or are stay-at-home moms. Dads are right there with us, trying to keep up, be involved, and work full time. Few of us make enough

time for ourselves or our partners. We have created a lifestyle that is not good for any of us, but how do we get off of the hamster wheel? That is what I am hoping to discover in the next few months and share with you. Jenny Bair is a life coach and professional organizer who will help my husband and I get organized from the inside out and help us refocus on what we really want in our life, as a couple, as parents and as individuals. Betty Murray is a certified nutritionist who is helping us create new eating patterns and new habits and to discover any underlying problems with metabolism, hormones or allergies. She told me I needed to start setting aside time to walk for one hour a day and I just laughed, who has an hour a day? Between Jenny and Betty, we will create a plan that my husband and I can accomplish together. I am an overachiever extraordinaire and it is so helpful to have someone else guide me in setting realistic and tangible goals for the New Year. I will also be getting a massage twice a month. Jenny and Betty are firm believers in the power of healing touch. Do you know how many times in my life I have actually paid to get a masage just for me, because I needed it? Maybe 6 times in the last 10 years. I recently had my first massage with massage therapist Melody Williams at Living Well Dallas. What a gift. I can't wait to go back and see what it is like to get a massage twice a month from the same person who will get to know my body and teach me stretching techniques to work on some of those tight spots that never seem to go away. Over the next couple of months, you will find additional articles about our challenges and successes on this journey both in the magazine and on our blog. You can tune in to our radio show on BlogTalk radio and hear my interviews with Jenny, Betty and Melody. I hope you will share your challenges and successes with us this year and realize that you are not alone in your journey and ask yourself, is today the day to commit to something different that is just about taking care of you? Have you ever wondered why people make New Year’s Resolutions and goals and then give up a month or two later? There are many reasons why this happens but we are going to focus on one that will make a huge difference for you in your ability to reach your goals. Hopefully you had time to rest, reflect and regroup after the holidays. If you are starting the year with an energy deficit, to develop a practice of completion increases your mental energy and helps you tap into more of your personal power. Completion unleashes new energy to give you the focus you need to reach your 2010 goals. Here are signs you could benefit from a completion practice:

• Your dining room table is full of incomplete projects • You use phrases like “I’ve got to finish….” • You have a list of projects you started last year that are still hanging over your head • Your mind runs constant chatter about all the things you have to do • You don’t even have a to-do list because your list is so long • You haven’t scheduled your mammogram or other important appointments

What is completion? Here is a short process: Make a list of all your unfinished business, needed appointments, projects and tasks. Keep going until you can’t think of anything else that is nagging you. Come on, add “put away the wrapping paper” that’s been sitting in the corner for the last few months. While you’re at it, list “oil change” and “return the book” you borrowed. Once you’ve completed the list, congratulate yourself for Completion unleashes putting the list all in one new energy to give you place. What’s next? The most effective approach the focus you need to is to create an action plan reach your 2010 goals. by using an electronic spreadsheet or simple notepad. You’ll want to create a column for the item, what needs to happen in regards to it, and a deadline to complete it. If you need help, supplies, or time to find something needed like the scrapbook you started last summer, add that under a column titled “Resources.” Be sure and add a date you want to complete or finish this project or task. The next step is to prioritize all the items on the list. Choose your strategy – either tackle the easy ones first or spend your time on the most complicated and get them out of the way. You can add fun to the process by celebrating or acknowledging each completion, each finished task. Check it off or cross it off your list to show progress. Keep the list in a visible place so you keep on track. If you notice some things on your list that have been there forever, ask yourself if you really intend to accomplish this. If not, and it is a reasonable decision, you can declare the task complete and just decide you are not going to do it. That makes that project complete because you say so. Once you start working your way through your list, you’ll unleash new mental and physical energy to put toward your 2010 goals. When Should You Bring Up the S** Word?

Achieving Your Child’s Goal,

by Cheryl L. McKinzie, M.S., M.A., LPCI

When should you talk about

Pumpkin Littles believes there is hope with many approaches to reach the child with autism. We just need to find the right path for that child.

sex with your child? Imagine the following:

You are in the kitchen making

an after-school snack for your son and his friend. They have your

iPhone. You hear noises from the iPhone that are vaguely familiar.

When you take your iPhone back from your 9-year-old son, you discover that they were watching adult content on YouTube. What do you do? Or imagine this scene:

It’s spring break, and several parents bring their kids to the office (no

babysitters!), and put them around a computer in a back office. These kids

range from 8 to 10. They find porn on the internet. How do you handle this?

Pediatric Services we provide:

Should these scenes be your child’s introduction to sex? What is an

appropriate introduction to this oh-so-touchy topic?

Our kids are confronted with sex every day in the media and on the

internet. We can’t keep them in a bubble and protect them forever, as much as we’d like to do so. As scary as it is, as tempting as it is to ignore, sex is a

subject that can’t be left alone. If you don’t talk about it, your kids will find it

on their own.

When should you bring up sex with your child? Each child is different.

And you know your child’s individual differences better than most. Age 8 is probably too young to discuss sexual issues. Age 13 is probably far too late (they know more than you by this time). Is this a male/female issue – No!

Girls and boys both need to hear about sexuality equally. Is this a Christian or secular issue? Absolutely not! Kids who have “the talk” with Mom and

Dad are more likely to remain abstinent longer than kids who do not. Why?

Because they have the facts, not the media representation of sex. Further, you

When busy lives meet big responsibilities… With so many demands on your time, some things just have to wait. But don’t put off talking to a State Farm Life Insurance Company agent about life insurance – it may be the most important thing you ever do.

Are you Financially Exposed? by Ann Dunham and Tamara Murphy, State Farm® agents

Many people realize the need for life insurance but keep putting it off until it is too late. You may think that life insurance is confusing, expensive and complicated. You may think you don't know enough to make the right decisions for you and your loved ones. Postponing this decision leaves you and your family exposed financially.

Assumption #1 Ann Dunham Ins Agcy Inc Ann Dunham CLU CPCU LTCP, Agent 2301 W Parker Road, Suite 1 Bus: 972-596-4809 Fax: 972-867-3183 www.anndunham.com

I'll always be able to buy life insurance. You could develop a health condition that makes you uninsurable or

could make life insurance too costly for you.

Assumption #2 I'll get life insurance later when I'm older or have a family. Life insurance may be needed at all stages of life. Whether married

or single, male or female, children or without, you may have financial

obligations that need to be met. Life insurance provides financial security for you and your loved ones.

Assumption #3 My family and I are covered by the group insurance at work. To meet the future needs of your family, you need to have 7 to 10

times your annual income. Most group term insurance amounts offered by

employers won't meet this need. And, when you don't work for that employer any longer, you usually lose that coverage.

Assumption #4 My husband has life insurance so I don't need it. Women often live longer than men but not always. There are countless

stories of men who had to shoulder the family financial burden along with the emotional burden after their wife passed away.

Assumption #5 My family can cover funeral and burial expenses. Burying a spouse or loved one is the most stressful time in a family's life.

Having life insurance can reduce financial concerns for the family. Take the time now to

CALLING DANCERS OF ALL AGES: Music Together Dallas Hosts its

Annual Winter Disco Party to Benefit

The Joel Shickman Children’s Music Fund The late Joel Shickman, or “Mr. Joel” as his littlest musical protégés called him, believed in the healing power of music. In his memory, Music Together of Dallas presents its Annual Winter Disco Party benefiting the Joel Shickman Children’s Music Fund. All of the proceeds from the Party will go toward the Fund, which allows families battling childhood cancer to bring all of their children to Music Together classes for free. Music Together’s Annual Winter Disco Party benefiting the Joel Shickman Children’s Music Fund is on January 17, 2010, from 3:30 to 5:30pm in Pollman Hall at Temple Emanu-El, 5800 Hillcrest Road, Dallas. Tickets are $10 for dancers eight months and older. “Everyone between the ages of zero and 120 is invited,” says Gila Vinokur, owner and director of Music Together of Dallas. “Disc jockey Joey Ben Ami will spin multi-generational sounds, from swing to disco, rock and roll to hip-hop. B.B. Good, formerly with Radio Disney, will be the emcee for the afternoon. We’ll have a musical time and be raising funds for a wonderful cause in Joel’s memory.” Shickman knew that one of the most perfect matches in all of creation is music and children. The music one learns as a child becomes a part of your being and memory for the rest of your life. Music speaks when there are no words to express incredible joy, sorrow, fear or love. Shickman was a man who could bring this incredible power of musical expression to everyone around him, young and old. Joel’s true calling to teach was awakened when he became a father. When his first son was old enough, Joel signed up for a Music Together class. Soon, Joel was a Music Together teacher. Mr. Joel was a magnet to children and parents alike. He was honored to be their guide through Latin rhythms, African drums, American folk songs and classical orchestras. Joel knew that anyone, everyone, can speak through music. He empowered the parents in his classes to sing and dance and bang on drums regardless of their pitch or ear or talent. He knew that a child needs to hear a parent’s voice and doesn’t care about quality. When a baby hears Mom or Dad singing the connection between them is made no matter what key or how broken the tune. And he knew that children can learn the languages of rhythm and music to express themselves before they can even speak. Joel Shickman died in November 2007 of leukemia. During his illness, there were jam sessions around his hospital bed and he played his guitar daily. A visitor to his room during one of these sessions could see him visibly lifted up in strength and spirit by the music. The hospital staff stood in awe at this healing power. They could be seen smiling and dancing down the hall for hours afterward. Joel’s sons were 2, 5 and 8 when he died. They remember the learning, the love, the silliness and they remember the music. The youngest always asks to hear Daddy’s CD in the car, at bedtime, and in the classroom. He will smile and say, “That’s my Daddy’s song.” The Joel Shickman Children’s Music Fund will bring the healing power of music to families who need it most. It will heal them and unite them in unbreakable ways. It will be Joel’s song.

Instructions:

• Clay: Stir 1 cup salt into 1-1/2 cups hot water. Ask an adult to help with the hot water. When the mixture cools, add 1 cup flour. Mix until smooth. Add another cup of flour, and continue to mix with a spoon. Add the last 1-1/2 to 2 cups of flour by kneading the clay with your hands. If the clay is sticky, add more flour. If it is dry, add a little more water. • Have an adult preheat oven to 300 degrees. When your clay is just right for shaping, form a 3-inch ball and roll it out on a floured counter with the rolling pin. Press the rim of a drinking glass onto the flattened clay to cut out a circle. Continue until you have cut out all the medals you want to bake. • Bake the medals on a cookie sheet for 30 minutes. When they cool, paint them gold or silver. When the paint is dry, write messages on them with markers, such as "World Peace." Drizzle glue around the edges, and sprinkle the glue with glitter. Cut two 5-inch pieces of ribbon and glue to the back of each medal when they are dry. Glue the pin backs to the medals or a piece of ribbon long enough to fit over your head.

Alexandria’s Book Review

The Lottie Project A Review by Alexandria Battle By Jacqueline Wilson 96 pages • Ages 8-12 Theatre Communications Group (Sept 2006) Jacqueline Wilson is an English author, a surprise to me when I realized that her book was published there first. She herself wrote her first story at the age of nine, and continued with her passion through adolescence with journalism. Now, as an adult, she writes books full time—including the one I love. I had to carefully pull January’s book from my bookcase because it’s so worn with age and frequent readings. The Lottie Project appealed to me as a story because of its main character, Charlotte “Charlie” Enright—we were similar in that we loved to tell a story, have fun with close friends and bake all kinds of cakes. The New Year’s book review is a tale of friendship and, moreover, individuality. Charlie does not think Year Six at

her school will be a particularly bright one. She has a new teacher named Miss Beckworth, and her stern, serious personality clashes instantly and often with Charlie’s own bossy, sassy ways. And Miss Beckworth refuses to call Charlie anything but “Charlotte”, which even her own mother doesn’t call her. Ugh! Miss Beckworth insists that all her students are going to sit in alphabetical order, regardless of whether they want to sit next to boys only (for boys), girls only (for girls), or the best friends they’ve sat next to for years (for Charlie). To Charlie’s further shock and horror, she is placed next to Jamie Edwards, the most stuck-up, annoying boy in the whole grade! Charlie’s new teacher is not done. She announces that for this term they

are going to be doing a project—a report on the Victorian era, with a prize to be handed out for the best one at the end of the term. Charlie is not thrilled at all, until she suddenly decides to do things her way… I recommend this book to anyone, especially those with a personality that flares like Charlie’s, who wants to discover what the heroine does next. I have not read any of Jacqueline Wilson’s other books, which include The Suitcase Kid and Double Act, but I may do so myself now. Have an enjoyable New Year!
