COPPER HEART WIREWORK PENDANT Designed by Deborah Short

1. Start by cutting 4 lengths of 0.8mm copper wire approximately 16 inches long. Then you will need a long length of the 0.4mm wire. You will need about 2 metres but just use a length you are comfortable with as it’s fine to add on as you work. Take one of your 0.8mm (base wires) and your long piece of 0 4mm (weaving wire), and leaving a 3 inch tail, pop the 0.4mm behind the base wire and wrap once.

2. Now bring in your second base wire and add it above your first piece. Bring your 0.4mm over and around both base wires and then bring it back to the top. Bring in your third base wire and place that on top of your others. Now bring your weaving wire over and around the top 2 wires only. Now bring in your Last base wire as shown. Wrap around the top 2 wires but then wrap once around the top wire only.

3. Bring the weaving wire down the back of the design and start the same weave again, once around the bottom wire, once around the bottom 2 wires, once around the middle 2 wires, once around the top 2 and then once around the top wire itself. Keep going with this weave for approximately 3.5 inches, or longer depending on how large you want your finished piece to be. Trim any leftover wire and tidy up with your pliers as shown. Cut another workable length of 0.4mm wire. Separate your bottom 2 base wires from your top two, and start the weave again but only using the bottom 2 base wires.

4. Now you simply wrap around the second wire once, bring the weaving wire back down and start again weaving the two bottom wires for approximately 4 inches, or again longer just depending on how large you want your finished piece to be. Once you have your long weaving section finished, again just form and tidy up the back to remove any excess or sharp bits of weaving wire.

5. It’s now time to start shaping your outer heart frame. Start with the thicker weaved section, and then the thinner side. Go slowly and steady, keeping the wires flat with your thumb and fingers. Once you have a nice shape, take the 2 top plain base wires and bring them slowly down and off to the side out of the way for the moment. Next go back to the ends of the thicker woven section, and add another workable length of 0.4mm wire to start a different weave. You can do any weave you like, I’ve just gone with a simple one here. Wrap 3 times around the bottom wire, then the middle two x3 and the top two x3, then repeat in reverse. Carry on for about 3 inches or so.

6. Once you have completed this section, it’s time to make any adjustments to your frame. Once you are happy, bring the two plain ends from your thin section across and wrap it around your frame to lock your heart shape into place. Keep the ends as you will need them at the end to add finishing touches. Now take your new woven section and carefully mould/shape it between your fingers keeping it as flat as you can. Shape it around the base of your frame and then change direction (like an “S” shape) so you end up with the end of the weave behind the frame. It’s an organic style so don't worry too much about the shape being perfect! Lay the remaining plain 0.8mm wires I side the heart whichever way you want, and once you are happy it’s time to add your beads!

7. You can thread your beads however you like. I have randomly mixed the seed beads and Swarovski bicones on the top wire and left the next one plain as a contrast, but do whatever you want! Once you are happy with these 2 wires then wrap them around your frame to secure. Then trim at the back and flatten with your pliers to get rid of any jagged edges. On to the bottom two 0.8mm wires. Take approximately 1 metre of 0.4mm wire and start to weave in between them. Again you can do any design you want here. I’ve started with a 3&3 weave, then adjusted the number of wraps as needed when I added the beads. One you have reached the frame wrap the ends around as before and tidy at the back.

8. We are almost ready for the finishing touches, but first we need to deal with those two 0.8mm wires that we moved out of the way after we finished weaving. Take 2 swarovski pearls, and pop one on to one of these wires. Move your wires and pop one a pearl onto the second wire .

9. Wrap your wires Round the pearls a few times to secure and frame them, and then wrap, trim and tidy the inside one. Bring the outside wire down and through into the inside of your piece, and add the last of your beads. Position it where you want, wrap around the frame and either tidy at the back, or create a small spiral at the front.

10. Now for the finishing touches to your piece, then we will move on to the chain. Go down to the bottom part of your frame and find those last 2 0.8mm wires, and wrap them both around the frame. Again you can either trim and tidy them to the back, or create another small spiral with one (or both) to finish!. All you need to do now is fit your jump ring(s) to connect your chain! If you want your heart to sit at an angle then just add one ring, if you want it to sit straight then simply add one on each side or your heart! 11. Now to the chain! You can make this as long or short as you like and with whatever bead combination you want. This is just how I did it. Take your 0.4mm wire and cut it into lots of lengths approx. 3 inches in length. These are the basis of the links for the chain. Simply make wrapped loop rosary style links with your beads and attach it to your pendant. Just continue with this for as long as you want your chain to be! You can attach a suitable clasp or simply make it long enough to slip on over your head! Attach this to your necklace with a jumpring.

Super Kheops Par Puca – These glass pyramid shaped beads have two threading holes on one side, that run to a single hole on each of the remaining two sides. They are similar to the regular Kheops beads above and can be used in the same way. Amos Par Puca – The brilliant Amos beads feature two holes running horizontally across the most narrow part and middle part of the droplet shape bead. These super smooth beads are ideal for creating petalled designs, floral embellishments and bursts of colour across your jewellery. Why not try threading matching seed beads or Minos beads between your Amos beads to add details between each petal shape?

Before you make your bracelets, try stretching your elastic to see how strongly you can pull it before it snaps. If you want to make your bracelets stronger, you can use two lengths of elastic through your beads if the threading holes are large enough to fit. 1. Cut a length of elastic measuring 2 or 3 inches longer than you will need it to be to fit your wrist. 2. Thread on your choice of seed beads and copper heart beads. Try and end with a heart bead, as this will be where you hide your knots. 3. Create a surgeons knot by following the knot diagram and then another on top to secure it. 4. Pull the loose cords to tighten the knots and pull the two sides of cord with beads on to tighten the knots from the other side. 5. You can add a drop of glue or some clear nail polish to your knots to secure them further. 6. Trim off all but 1cm of your excess cords and pull your knot through so that it sits inside of the nearest copper heart bead. Why not try making a double or triple wrap elastic bracelet? A longer length can also be worn as a necklace or a choker!
