ROYAL RED CLUSTER NECKLACE DESIGNED BY SARAH MILLSOP

In this project we’ve worked in a mix of clockwise and anticlockwise directions but you may prefer going in just one direction. It is a simple technique and pattern that you can adapt with your supply of beads. On each ‘round’ we are filling gaps in between the previous circle. Use different sized beads to add detail and interest to personalise your design. Step 1 – row 1 Thread a needle with 80cm of thread. Pick up 8 twin beads. Go through them all again to form a loose ring. Position it so that you have a 20cm tail then knot the threads to form a firm but not overtight ring. In the photos you’ll see that we’ve cut our tail thread short. This is just so you can see which the working thread is. You must leave yours long so you can weave it in at the end for extra security. Step 2 – row 2 Pass the needle through the inner hole of the next twin bead then ‘step up’ to begin the next row by going passing the needle through outer hole of the same bead. The thread that shows around the back of this bead will be covered up when you add the next row. Turn your work so that you’re going in your preferred direction. Pick up 1 twin hole bead and go through the outer hole of the next twin hole bead. Step 3 Repeat all the way around. Add the last bead, go through the last bead of the first row and then the first bead added on the second row. You may need to do this a bead at a time. Step 4 Pick up a 4mm fire polish bead. Go under the bridge you’ve just used again from the back to the front. Pull through. Go up through this bead again. This technique is how you increase the number of beads in each row; two seed beads are sharing the same bridge at either end of the row. You can turn your work over if you wish so that you are working in the same direction. Step 5 Repeat all the way around so that gold fire polish beads sit in the gaps between the twin hole beads. When you come to the last bead, go through the last bead on the second row and the first bead added to the third row. You may need to do this a bead at a time.
Step 6 – row 4 Pick up 3 seed beads skip the twin hole bead and go through the next small faceted bead. Arrange the seed beads so they sit neatly around end of the twin hole bead. Step 7 Repeat all the way around. When you come to add the last three seed beads, go through the last bead on the third row and the first two seed beads added on the fourth. You may need to do this a bead at a time. Step 8 – row 5 Pick up one seed bead, a large bead and a seed bead. Go through the middle bead of the next group of seed beads. Repeat all the way around. Step 9 – row 6 Row 6 uses small faceted beads and you may be able to string them between the large beads ones. If however you find there is thread showing you can attach the small bead directly to the groups of seed beads. Exit after three seed beads, pick up a small faceted bead and go through the same three seed beads you’ve just been through. You’ll need to do this in two stages. Step 10 Pass through the third seed bead and next large bead. Continue all the way around repeating steps 9 & 10. Weave the free ends into the work knotting a couple of times as you go. Trim off the excess. Step 11 Make as many twin hole ‘rounds’ as desired. Connect each one by stringing a doubled up thread through one (or more) of the beads around the edge of each round. Add beads between each one to space them out and make the chain. To finish your piece you can form small loops at the end of the chain and attach a clasp with jump rings. Thread on approx 10 seed beads at the end of the necklace and thread back down through the first seed bead added to make a loop. Attach a jumpring to this or, if your clasp has a loop already, add this onto your thread after the 5th seed bead and add 5 more. Finish the loop and weave your thread back into your design to secure, knotting along the way.

WIRE WRAPPED GLASS BEADED RINGS DESIGNED BY LINDA JONES

1. Depending on your ring size, cut approximately 10” of 0.8mm wire. Fold the wire in half around your round nosed pliers and continue wrapping the wire around the circular shaft of the pliers to create a criss-cross of loops going forward in a line. 2. Once you have created the length required for your ring size, secure the ends together by wrapping one wire around the other, retaining one projecting wire. 3. Place the looped length around your mandrel to shape and secure into a circle by attaching the projecting end into the last loop. Cut approximately 5” of 0.4mm wire and connect this to the ring shank around that last loop. Begin threading this length with your selection of beads. 4. Once you’ve connected all your chosen beads to the front of the ring, cut off any excess wire and neaten the ends. Cut approximately 8” of 0.8mm wire and create a small, tight spiral at one end. Thread the wire through the back of the wire-wrapped beads until the spiral acts as a stopper against the side of the beads. Place the ring back onto the mandrel and wrap the projecting 0.8mm wire around the perimeter of your beads to create a free-style frame. Once all the wire has been used up, tuck the end into the back of the beads and adjust until you’re satisfied with the design. 1. Cut an arms length of 0.8mm wire and wrap the centre of the wire once around your ring mandrel bringing both ends back around to the front. Thread each of these projecting wires with a couple of beads and wrap the wires once more around the mandrel. 2. Repeat step one, adding a few more beads, keeping the beads positioned and stacked up above each other. 3. To secure in place, bring the projecting wires to the back to the mandrel and twist the wires together to secure. 4. Cut off one of the projecting wires and neaten the end. Wrap the other wire around the back wires to secure. 5. Using your pliers, create a tight spiral with the projecting wire and flatten it against the back wires. Use the tips of your chain nosed pliers to twist and ‘tweak’ the wires at the sides (or in any gaps between the front beads) to help keep them in place. 1. Depending on the ring size or how curly you wish the ‘wurlies’ to be, cut 3 equal size lengths of 0.8mm wire (approx. 8”) and straighten them out. Cut 3 short lengths of 0.4mm wire and use these to bind the 0.8mm straightened wires together, starting at the centre and spacing at equal intervals on each side. Try and keep the wires packed together, one on top of the other. 2. Place the central binding on your bound wires around your ring mandrel (at the correct ring size) and bring them around to shape the circular shank, crossing the wires over at the centre. 3. Remove the ring from the mandrel and separate the wires out on either side. Thread one of the wires with a bead of your choice, pushing it right up to the ring shank. 4. Wrap the wire projecting from the bead around the perimeter of the bead and using your round nosed pliers, create a small curl at the very end, which you can flatten over the bead surface. 5. Using your pliers, create spirals with all remaining wires, curling them in towards the ring shank. 1. Cut approximately an ‘arm’s length’ of 0.8mm wire. Thread the wire with your chosen bead, pushing it to the centre. Place the threaded bead onto the ring mandrel (½ size smaller than your actual ring size, as the wire springs open a little when removed from the mandrel) and wrap the projecting wires around, bringing one around the top and the other around the base of the bead. 2. Take each of the projecting wires and wrap them around the bead in opposite directions, encircling it in a free-style manner. When you’ve run out of wire, push the ends into wrapped wires to hide and secure in place behind the bead. 3. If desired, cut an arms length of 0.4mm wire and use this to weave around the shank at the back of the ring. If the weaving looks a little un-even, use the tips of your chain nosed pliers to twist and ‘tweak’ each of the woven wires in turn, helping them to tighten and provide a more interesting effect.

MAPLE GLOW MANDALA PENDANTS DESIGNED BY SARAH MILLSOP
GET ALL YOUR MATERIALS IN ONE PLACE!
- CLICK HERE TO MAKE YOUR PENDANTS -
Building a mandala is straightforward, as you’re just filling gaps between existing beads in the previous round. The challenge is to find the right combination for each round. Use the natural variation in the beads to your advantage by intentionally selecting broader or narrower ones to comfortably fill the gaps. There’s no right or wrong bead order; it’s what fits best. Step 1 – round 1 Thread a needle with an armspan of thread. Pick up 12 twin beads. Sew through them all to form a ring. Knot the two threads together then sew through the next two. It’s up to you if you work the next steps clockwise or anticlockwise, whatever is comfortable for you. Step 2 Now you need to ‘Step up’ to get to the right place to begin the next round. So sew through the top hole of the twin bead you’ve just come out of. Pull the thread firmly. Because you’ve reversed the direction of the thread, flip the beadwork over so that you can continue beading in a comfortable direction.
Step 8 Step up by sewing through the top hole of the twin you’ve just come out of just as you did in step 2. Pull firmly but don’t overtighten. Step 9 – round 5 Without adding a bead sew through the top hole of the first bead of the next pair. Pick up two twin beads and sew through the second bead of the pair. Repeat this step all the way round. Depending on your beading tension, you may need to add a seed bead between the pairs of twin beads. You’ll need to use your judgement as everyone’s beading tension is different and twin beads naturally vary in thickness. Step 10 When you’ve added the final pair of twin beads, sew through the next twin as normal then the next seed bead and first twin of the next pair. Step up to the top hole of the twin bead you came out of. Flip the beadwork over.
Step 3 – round 2 Pick up a seed bead and sew through the top hole of the next twin bead. For clarity in the photographs, the short tail has been woven in. You can leave the tail so that you’ve got something to hold onto whilst beading.
Step 11 – round 6 Repeat step 9 and 10 adding a seed bead instead of skipping the gap and sewing through to the next bead. Add two twin beads between the previous pairs. When you add the final twin beads, sew the next twin and seed as normal then then next seed bead and first bead of the next pair. Step up to the top hole of the twin bead you came out of. Flip the beadwork over.
Step 4 Repeat adding a seed bead all the way around. When you add the final seed beads sew through the next twin bead as normal then the next seed bead, this completes the round. Now to get to the right place to begin the next round, sew through the next twin bead too.
Step 12 – round 7 Pick up a bicone and sew through the first twin of the next pair. Pick up 3 seed beads and sew through the second twin of the pair. Repeat all the way around. If the beadwork doesn’t sit right try swapping the order of the beads. The three seed beads should be encouraged to form a kind of picot edge.
Step 5 – round 3 - picot Pick up 3 seed beads. Sew through the twin bead you’ve just come out of and going in the same direction. Sew though the next seed bead and twin. Repeat this step to complete the round. It’s important that the little bead picot sit neatly side by side. If you find that they buckle you’ll need to go back and release some of the tension in the previous round.
Step 13 If desired sew all the way around the outer ring but don’t pull too tight. If you need to make the picot edging more pronounced sew through beads 1 & 3, skipping the middle one entirely. Again, you mustn’t pull the thread too tight.
Step 6 – round 4 Sew through to the next seed in the round then up through the first two beads of the picot so that you’re coming out at the middle bead. Pick up 2 twin beads and sew through the middle bead of the next picot – see our Top Tip. You can choose a different colour or stick with the same colour you chose in round 1. Step 7 Repeat adding 2 twin beads all the way round. When you add the final pair of twins, sew through the next seed bead and the first twin of the next pair.
Step 14 - loop Sew up to and through the middle bead of one of the picot. Pick up 7 seed beads and sew through the seed bead you’ve just come out of and going in the same direction. Step 15 Sew around the loop of beads a couple more times to reinforce then weave the thread into the beadwork to secure, knot in a couple of places and add a dab of glue for extra security. Once dry string your pendant onto a cord or chain, add a jump ring through the loop first if desired.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR EARRINGS! As Summer draws to an end it’s time to look forward to the rich, changing colours that Autumn brings. You can make all kinds of colour combinations with this project, why not try making a different coloured diamond in the centre? Step 1. Cut an arms length of KO thread, sew through a stopper bead a couple of times to secure the end of your thread. Thread on three twin hole beads (TH). This will make the bottom point. Step 2. Add another TH and go through the top hole of the previous TH. Step 3. Add a TH and go through the top hole of the bead to the left. Step 4. Add a TH and go through the top hole of the previous bead to step up a row. Step 5. Fill the two gaps in the middle with a TH in each. Step 6. Add another TH and step up like you have preciously (in step 4). Step 7. Continue to add more rows until you begin to make a point. Step 8. Add your final bead to make the point of the diamond shape. Step 9. Weave your needle back through each row from left to right to the opposite and tie knots in the thread to make the design more rigid and secure. Step 10. Exit through the top of the point, thread on 6 seed beads and sew back through the top TH and back through the seed beads once more. Tie a few knots and weave the end of the thread into the design. All that’s left is to add on the earwire and make a second earring to complete the pair!
Share your finished earrings with us and your fellow beaders!
