Lab Inventory Management Guide Lab Inventory management is a task of significant responsibility. The purpose of inventory management is to cut the cost and ensure productivity. There are some tips which can help the one to manage the lab inventory efficiently.

Make a Rough Draft First, imagine and brainstorm what the tasks and tools you will need. List down roughly in a register or a computer sheet. List reagents, consumable supplies, instruments and lab equipment you need in the lab. In this way, you will have a clear picture what materials you need.

Start Book Keeping or Record Inventory Either you are new lab startup or want to simplify the procedures of lab management. You have to keep the record of every item present in the lab. For this purpose, you can note the things in any stock journal or save it in the computer program. Make sure you have the record of everything and don’t skip any item of the inventory. As you will finish the task, you will know about the initial stock of your lab. Therefore, you will have the index of items you need to order vs. that you don’t need to order for the particular period of time.

Maintain Stock Levels Here, you need to evaluate the stock levels. What you need excess and what you need less. Review your routine, week, month and quarter consumption. List out the items:     

How many times do you need to re-order an item? Which are the most urgent items you always need? Which things will you need from out of the city? How many extra items you have to waste due to items reach their expiration date? Estimate the minimum amount of funds your lab must have to re-order or buy in any contingency?

Come across answering all these questions, make notes and set parameters as these questions are criteria for re-ordering and procurement of inventory.
