AN ALTERNATIVE STRATEGY FOR EUROMEDITERRANÉE
32
(FR)
Opposing the profit-driven instant urbanism of the ongoing Euroméd II masterplan, “Port of Entry” proposes an incremental counter-model of city making, aiming for a better Marseille - inclusive of both current residents and newcomers. Envisioning an urban-renewal scheme that will regulate speculation by targeting different categories of developers (...) plans a place where diversity of social classes, density, and building types will coexist. (...) In fact, the site next to the Marché aux Puces already offers everything that makes Marseille an arrival city: a primary housing shelter for migrants, immediate job opportunities at the market and the port, and cheap food and goods. “Port of Entry” capitalizes on and enhances these excellent existing conditions with new working spaces and affordable housing.

A TACTIC TO TACKLE HOUSING SHORTAGE IN BEIRUT
40
BEIRUT (LB)
Beirut’s municipality does not have policies for affordable housing and consistently sells out public land. The amount of inhabitants facing evictions makes this absence of state blatant. Paradoxically, consolidated refugee camps are a resilient example of selfconstruction and provision. Based on occupation experiences and their self-sustaining tactics, the project introduces an architectural element – the staircase- that becomes a tool for urban inclusivity. Illuminating alternative ways of securing the right to the city, it aims to show how design can push the social agenda of affordable housing.

INFORMALITY IN ISTANBUL
48
The master thesis deals with the topic of informality with special emphasis on the link between urban informality and urban transformations in the past two decades in Istanbul. This research further argues that, on one hand informal practices highly determine Istanbul’s social and spatial forms, on the other those practices are constantly threatened by the recent urban renewal projects. The purpose is to question a diffused misunderstanding: that in contemporary cities urban informality is a marginal phenomenon.
In Istanbul this “marginality” perspective has been ruling the approach to urban transformation since the 90s leading to urban informality erasure. Opposite to this view, my goal is to delineate a low profile urban regeneration strategy, taking into account the spontaneous coexistence and hybridization between formal and informal practices.
