Fundraising & Events

welcome

Martin Cawley CEO, Beatson Cancer Charity

Hello everyone,

It’s Summertime and I am pleased to report that the charity is busier than ever! It has been quite a challenge to select the key highlights for you within this newsletter as there have been many. In this edition, we would like to raise awareness of the wonderful work generated by our funding and grants programme. This is an area of growth within the charity and we have a wide variety of projects on the go. We are also anticipating the cautious return of patients to our Wellbeing Centre and we cannot underestimate the value of this service. I am particularly happy that live charity events have been reinstated, from our Glasgow Ladies Lunch through to large participation events such as the Kiltwalk.

We’re with you

The amount of money raised through our community and corporate circles in the first six months of 2022 has been simply quite staggering. I want to thank every single supporter who has contributed to the charity, whether it is from dining at our unique partnership restaurant, BEAT 6, through to donating to our latest Spring Appeal. A few weeks ago, we hosted another milestone event for the charity, with the opening of the MRI Suite. This technology is ground-breaking for cancer care in Scotland and cements our close partnership with the NHS. Over the next few weeks we will also be refurbishing our offices into a more welcoming space for supporters and staff.

We are pleased to let you know the MRI Suite has been operational since late April at The Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre and patients are being scanned daily. This would not have been possible without our amazing supporters. The Beatson will be able to build and adapt treatments for people in ways that haven’t been possible before.

Sharon Cave, MRI lead with Kirsty Brown, Kay Nisbet, Therapeutic Radiographers - MR Radiotherapy.

Working in partnership with the NHS, this has given Beatson Cancer Charity the opportunity to improve the lives of over 20,000 people over the next decade. At the end of May, we hosted an event to celebrate this milestone for the charity and NHS GGC, attended by Humza Yousaf, MSP, Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Care. You can watch a walk-through of the MRI suite on our YouTube channel. This will introduce you to some of the staff who will run and deliver the service alongside a tour of the suite.

The public phase of our MRI appeal raised over £170,000, the most money ever raised from one of our appeals. 3

We’re re-opening our Wellbeing Centre, but we need your help! dear reader,

My name is Helen and I’m a Team Leader at Beatson Cancer Charity’s Wellbeing Centre. I am writing to say thank you for your support over the past few years. It is because of you we have been able to continue to provide comfort and care by adapting our services while our Wellbeing Centre in The Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre was temporarily closed due to Covid-19 restrictions. I am delighted to tell you that with restrictions easing, we are planning the re-opening of our Wellbeing Centre slowly and safely, but we need your help. The wellbeing support that we provide is such a big part of someone’s cancer treatment journey. With your help we can make people feel better, stronger and more relaxed. All our services exist to help people cope with their cancer diagnosis and treatment. When visitors shut the door, they can leave the stress and anxiety of cancer treatment behind. For patients, our Wellbeing Centre is so welcoming and calming they can talk to our staff, volunteers, or other people receiving treatment and it can help them feel less alone.

I can’t tell you how delighted I am that we are planning to re-open late summer. I cannot wait for the rooms to be filled with chatter and smiles. We could not provide any of our services without you. From all of us here at Beatson Cancer Charity, thank you.

P.S

with a greater demand for our wellbeing services, we need your support now more than ever.

community story

notre dame primary school raises £9k for beatson cancer charity Staff and pupils at Notre Dame Primary School in the West End of Glasgow have helped to raise over £9,000 for Beatson Cancer Charity. Head teacher Tina MacDonald sparked the idea after deciding to shave her head for the charity and asked pupils to come up with their own fundraising challenges.

Tina’s head shave took place in September last year in the playground, surrounded by pupils and staff. Tina said: “Because of Covid, the whole school hadn’t been together like that for ages so seeing your whole school in front of you was quite emotional. “I remember in the morning getting a call from one of the newspapers and only then did it kind of hit me. I was totally fine the whole time leading up to it. “When I sat in that chair my legs were shaking. But it was seeing the kids, teachers and support staff in the background. All the kids wore yellow and it was just amazing.” The school raised a fantastic total of £9,053.80 - thank you so much to Notre Dame Primary School for their fantastic fundraising efforts and to Tina MacDonald for her incredible challenge!

Tina said: “My mum passed away from cancer in June 2019 and previous to that I’d always done charity work. My dad had dementia, so I’d skydived and abseiled and things like that to raise money for other charities. I was trying to think of what would make the most money and I said to my husband ‘I think I’ll shave my head’ and he was like ‘aye right – very good!!’.” Tina explained that many pupils and staff had a strong connection with the charity, which made it even more appropriate. Tina said: “We had lost a parent the year before who was only 39 years old, and her last few days were in The Beatson. We also had a member of staff whose husband was getting treatment in The Beatson. Raising money for Beatson Cancer Charity all just tied together.” Each class got involved in their own sponsored activities including ‘Soak the Teacher’ events, bake sales, runs and games.

research

find out more about our volunteer drivers

We are pleased to announce our volunteers are helping with some exciting new research taking place in The Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre. Many Breast Cancer patients are treated annually with chemotherapy before surgery (known as neoadjuvant chemotherapy), as the best response to chemotherapy is when no cancer cells are left at the time of the patient’s operation. Patients who respond well to chemotherapy have a reduced risk of breast cancer recurrence and will live longer. Unfortunately, some breast cancer patients do not respond well to chemotherapy before surgery, therefore researchers are looking at new ways to improve the chemotherapy response before surgery to give breast cancer patients the best chance. Dr Kirsty Ross, Specialist Registrar in Medical Oncology at the Beatson, is investigating the role of gut bacteria in influencing responses to neoadjuvant chemotherapy in breast cancer patients.

6

This exciting research could lead to changes in clinical practice whereby clinicians recreate favourable gut bacteria trends in breast cancer patients to improve the effectiveness of chemotherapy treatments and reduce side effects. The ultimate aim of this research is to reduce the risk of breast cancer recurrence and enable breast cancer patients to live for longer. We awarded a £15,700 grant to Dr Ross for conducting Ribonucleic Acid (RNA) Sequencing of patient tumour samples. The genetic information from these tumour samples will help to complement the main results from the research study. We were also able to create a new volunteer role to support the logistics behind the study. Our Volunteer Drivers assist with the delivery and collection of the equipment and stool samples. This is the first time that volunteers are directly supporting a research study. www.beatsoncancercharity.org

meet the team Q&A with Graham Hart Grants Officer

1. Can you describe what your role is?

revamping radiotherapy masks for kids Two creative clinical technologists, Fiona McCulloch and Hilary Sturrock who work in the Mould Room at The Beatson West of Scotland Cancer Centre, are helping children and young patients to combat their fear of radiotherapy treatment by transforming them into their favourite superhero or character, thanks to funding from Beatson Cancer Charity. Fiona and Hilary have been using water-based acrylic paint donated by the charity to revamp plain radiotherapy masks into something more child-friendly, to help younger radiotherapy patients feel more comfortable during treatment. During radiotherapy to the brain, head or neck, a made-to-measure radiotherapy mask is worn by patients to help keep their head still. Fiona and Hilary, who are both former art students, work with the patients to create their masterpieces on a blank canvas. Fiona said: “Radiotherapy treatment wearing one of these masks can understandably be a very frightening experience for children and can often feel claustrophobic. It’s fantastic to see the positive impact the designs are having, and it’s such a pleasure working with patients and creating their ideas and designs.” Radiographers at The Beatson are hoping that over time, this initiative will see a decreased use of anaesthetic, which is sometimes required to calm patients and limit movement. Hilary said: “I feel grateful to have the opportunity to put my previous study towards such a worthwhile and positive experience for these young patients. Although some design requests can start off as a challenge to envision, we have had such great feedback. The radiographers treating these patients have commented on the positive impact a personalised mask or device has on the child’s experience.”

As the charity’s Grants Officer, I am responsible for coordinating and administering the whole life-cycle of grant making from the pre-application stage, through assessment and decision making, to grant management and learning. I also provide administrative support to the Strategic Advisory Council which provides guidance for our grant making activities.

2. How long have you been in your post for? I’ve been in my post for about two years which has flown by!

3. What is the most rewarding thing about your role? Hearing about the positive impact of our grant projects from patients themselves and our colleagues in the NHS.

4. What funding projects have you particularly enjoyed working on? Supporting the Neo-Microbe Breast study has been a great experience as I got the chance to work with the research team and our volunteer team on the development of the charity’s new Volunteer Driving Service. Processing the grant for an additional ultrasound machine and urology procedure chair for treating prostate cancer was very interesting as I managed to see the equipment and hear about its positive impact from the Beatson’s Uro-Oncology Team’ I also enjoyed processing a small grant which enabled The Beatson’s Radiotherapy Department to develop a short patient information film which is currently being used to help reduce anxiety in patients before and during radiotherapy treatment.

5. What does it mean to you to work at Beatson Cancer Charity? It’s a fantastic wee charity, I feel very proud to be part of Team Beatson and I am very grateful to be in a role where I can help people with cancer and our colleagues in the NHS. 7

Beat 6 q&a with beat 6 manager suzana 1. You’ve been at Beat 6 since it launched – how have the last few months been? Since the opening we have been welcomed with open arms, especially by Dennistoun locals. Almost every second guest told us that they live just round the corner or down the road, and they are so happy that not just something new came into the area, but also something with such an amazing story. We’ve already built quite a strong base of our very own regulars, and also it is so nice to see Six by Nico regulars coming over and supporting us, and trying again some of their favorite courses, or menus that they missed.

2. What does it mean to you to work for a restaurant which exists to raise funds for Beatson Cancer Charity? Every single team member is proud to be part of such an amazing initiative. Combining good food with a good cause is basically a recipe for success we believe. As we are working for such a worthy cause, it gives us an additional boost to perform better than ever.

3. Since learning more about Beatson Cancer Charity in your time working there, what is it that you love about the charity? On a daily basis we get so many customers sharing their stories/personal experience with Beatson Cancer Charity and through this interaction we learn of the wonderful care provided by The Beatson. 10

We are amazed that your care doesn’t stop at the patient, but is extended to their closest ones who are also affected. Through this work you bring a little bit of sunshine to everyone on those dark days - this is what we love most about you, the extra mile you go for people, when they need you the most.

4. What’s your favourite menu that you’ve put on so far and why? That is a tough one - I would say either Mad Hatter’s Tea Party or Circus. For certain however, I can tell you what my favourite course is: Cacio e Pepe Agnoloti with Pumpkin seed pesto which is part of the New York menu. When I tried this course for the first time it reminded me of my grandma, and I almost ran out of the restaurant to call her and tell her that. Pumpkin seeds are a big thing back home in Slovenia, as a nibble, used as a salad dressing or on vanilla ice-cream - yes, try it! I never shared this with my husband, however we served this course during our preview week and he said to me “this is your grandma” - a really heart-warming moment.”

Beat 6 and the wider Six by Nico community has so far raised an amazing £150,000 for us. We’d like to thank Nico Simeone for his incredible generosity and also thank every single customer who has dined in the restaurant and made a contribution to our charity. Book online beat-6.co.uk

new ways to support

Get your club involved in Beatson Bunker to raise vital funds Golf can be a great way to engage in social activity, bringing many health and wellbeing benefits, but it can also be a fantastic way to raise money for a worthy cause. Beatson Cancer Charity is encouraging golf clubs across the country to sign up to the Beatson Bunker initiative.

We’ve been delighted to see other clubs have gone one step further in supporting us – like the members of Lanark Golf Club. Former footballer Robert Douglas has helped raise over £364,000 in memory of his friend Gordon Cowan, who sadly passed away 25 years ago. Since then they have put on memorial balls, annual golf days and sponsored walks. Robert Douglas said: “I thought we’d maybe get to £30,000 and then after a couple of years it would peter out, but it’s actually been the opposite. For a small town like Lanark in 16 years it’s staggering.”

Clubs are being asked to choose the largest bunker on the course and anyone who lands in the bunker has the forfeit of making a donation of £1-£10 to our charity. Donation cans with QR codes can also be placed in the clubhouse, bar or pro-shop.

There are so many ways golf clubs can support us – from hole in one challenges to fundraising events, there’s something for everyone and we can help find the right initiative for your club.

The aim of the initiative is to help raise awareness of Beatson Cancer Charity through local clubs whilst raising vital funds for people living with cancer in the West of Scotland.

If you are interested in being part of the Beatson Bunker or wish to support us in another way, please email us on fundraising@beatsoncancercharity.org or call 0141 212 0505.

news Befriending Service hits 1000 calls We are delighted to announce that over 1000 befriending calls have been made by our wonderful Befriending volunteers since the start of the pandemic. 90 clients have benefitted from the service over the last two years from a team of 25 volunteers. Gillian from Glasgow has been a Befriending Service user since November 2021, after being diagnosed with cancer last year. Gillian said: “When I read about the Befriending Service I thought ‘that would be really good’ because there are often times that I would maybe benefit from talking to someone, but I wouldn’t want to upset family or friends. “It’s been useful for me because it has allowed me to process information with someone other than a family member or friend. If I get results, I might not want to just splurge out all the words in front of someone I might upset. Having this service has enabled me to share this information externally and as a result I’m able to work through it.”

Despite being set up during lockdown, due to its success the service will continue to run even when all our in-person support returns. Befriending volunteer Helen Kidd said: “There’s always that fear at the beginning of a call when somebody’s feeling down. You can always tell from the voice or their attitude on the phone. But if you persevere and listen, at the end of the call you realise that their mood has changed. You can always tell when someone’s smiling on the phone, so at the end of the call if you hear that smile you think ‘maybe that’s made a difference’.” Paul Sheerin, our Volunteer Co-ordinator, said: “I would like to thank our amazing volunteers for all their support in reaching this milestone and also our clients who have been an absolute joy to work with.”

If you would like to enquire about our Befriending Service please call Paul on 0141 212 0505 or email: befriending@beatsoncancercharity.org 13

The Malcolm Group Ball raises £190,000 for Beatson Cancer Charity Hundreds of people helped to raise £250,000 at the Donald Malcolm Memorial Ball in December for three Scottish charities - Beatson Cancer Charity, Accord Hospice and St Vincent’s Hospice. It was hosted by Nicola Malcolm, granddaughter of Donald Malcolm. Nicola started hosting the ball in 2014 in memory of her Grandpa after he passed away following his cancer diagnosis in 2003. £190,000 of the money fundraised has been donated to Beatson Cancer Charity.

Event Organiser, Nicola Malcolm said: “The support was absolutely incredible at the event. I never thought when I initially suggested to Dad the idea of a ball in memory of Grandpa back in December 2013 that it would turn into such a big event. Thank you so much to all who attended and helped to raise an amazing £250,000 for the chosen charities.”

Martin Cawley, CEO of Beatson Cancer Charity, said: “We are so grateful to the Malcolm family for donating an incredible £190,000 to our charity. This amount of money is nothing short of outstanding and will have a significant impact on the services we are able to develop and provide to cancer patients and their families. It will also allow us to contribute to specific research projects within the hospital which have life-changing benefits. We cannot thank the Malcolm family enough for their continued support.” Renowned Glasgow Artist Gerard Burns helped to raise a phenomenal £84,000 at the Malcolm Ball by auctioning two personal art commissions. He also donated a further painting to the silent auction which raised £1,500.

Congratulations to the Malcom Group on being shortlisted as a finalist for the Charity Event Awards. 15

service

feedback Our Digital Wellbeing Services help people like Jen stay connected, hopeful, and confident throughout their cancer journey.

meet jen

Jen was diagnosed with cancer amidst the Covid-19 pandemic which meant support services were limited due to restrictions, however Jen was put in touch with Beatson Cancer Charity who supported her throughout her diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. “I was one of the people going through diagnosis bang in the middle of the pandemic so initially there were no services at all, and I got referred through a scheme called navigating your cancer journey and they put me in touch with Beatson Cancer Charity.” Jen was delighted with the support she received from the team at the Wellbeing Centre who were on hand to offer a range of mindfulness-based therapies to relieve anxiety, as well as offer makeup lessons to help her rebuild her confidence. “From the start I got access to the lovely team who talked me through makeup tips to help you feel more like yourself when you lose your eyebrows and your hair. I also got help with what to do when your hair is falling out and then I got to go in and they helped me with wig fitting.” The relaxation and mindfulness-based therapies that Jen accessed via video call had a huge impact on reducing her anxiety. BCC Complimentary Therapist, Elaine, was on hand to offer the right treatments as well as listen to any worries Jen had. 16

“I had ongoing meditation with Elaine who is just brilliant. What I like about Elaine is that she helps with breathing and meditation, but she also just listens. She is really passionate about what she does and that really comes across. I love that the team have a sense of humour because sometimes things can be too intense. The work that you all do is just brilliant.” Thanks to the proven success, the digital services are here to stay. Our digital services have been invaluable to reduce stress and anxiety for those who faced a cancer diagnosis during Covid-19 restrictions, and we are delighted that we are able to continue to offer them. “What I really like about the charity is it’s for the family and friends too, so it’s not limited to people going through it, and I think that’s really important.” The wellbeing services mean the world to people facing cancer. With your help we can make them feel better, stronger and more relaxed. All our services exist to help people cope with their cancer diagnosis and treatment. “Knowing you have the Wellbeing Centre there to help break up your day, it’s wonderful. It gives you support and helps you focus on your wellbeing beyond just appointments – it gives you hope.” We could not provide any of our services without you. From all of us here at Beatson Cancer Charity, thank you.
