ike many Canadians, I vividly remember listening to Dr David Suzuki’s soothing narrative voice as a young person. His broadcasts reached a great many people across our country and made him a Canadian icon who taught us many lessons. He taught us to be aware of our surroundings. He made us accountable as citizens of the Earth, and taught us to respect our environment. Dr Suzuki has always been a pioneer in breaking the subject barrier and giving attention to issues that were considered taboo or hush-hush. He was willing to say what others considered controversial, and he said it with matter-of-fact simplicity and urgency. I now enjoy watching his show with our daughter and answering her questions about the world she will inherit and pass on to children of her own. In this way, Suzuki continues to inform and guide at least two more generations of Canadians. David Suzuki is truly one of the greatest ambassadors of Canada and a model citizen of the world. He leads us all by example, and his legacy and ideals will live on long after he has left us. I want to draw your attention to a relatively new therapy that has been shown to provide relief for a host of problems: hormone balancing. By fine-tuning the endocrine system with a gentle, naturopathic approach, many people report feeling better, looking better and experiencing better health. Have a look at the “Fountain of Youth” article in this issue of Vista to decide if hormone therapy might be right for you. Yet our focus in this issue is firmly on the environment. In our Organic Planet section, we’re tackling the Enbridge pipeline debate. Do the environmental risks and inevitable damage of this lucrative project outweigh the financial gain? A more difficult question to answer might be: are we naive in thinking our concerns about the environment are being heard? According to the David Suzuki Foundation, there is hope. We have the tools and the resources to make the changes we require. It’s a matter of putting them into action. From my family to yours, I want to wish all our valued readers a happy and healthy New Year and all the best in 2013.

Hair Grow Technology’s Bio-Fen® product line is continually moving forward! We are introducing our two latest versions; Bio-Fen® Plus for Men and Bio-Fen® Plus for Women. These products have been assigned Natural Product Numbers (NPN’s) by Health Canada. We recognize that both men and women experience androgenic alopecia (AGA, or male / female pattern baldness) and have made some improvements to the original formulation based on the latest science to address their specific needs. You will notice that we now have additional complementary (Health Canada Approved) health claims on each product.

How does Bio-Fen® PLUS work?

Bio-Fen® Plus for Women will also help to: • Reduce elevated blood lipid levels/hyperlipidemia • Prevent iron deficiency. • Metabolize carbohydrates, fats and proteins.

We are bringing you two new products with doublethe number of capsules and triple the number of health claims for men and four times the number of health claims for women.

How long must I use Bio-Fen® Plus?

As in the previous formulation, the fenugreek seed extract in both new formulas reduces excess blood lipid levels (hyperlipidemia). Fenugreek contains β-sitosterol, an active plant sterol, which has been shown to inhibit 5-alpha-reductase activity – the enzyme responsible for converting excess testosterone to DHT(which is the primary molecule that causes hair loss). The SDG (secoisolariciresinol diglucoside) from flax lignans in both formulas also decreases excess cholesterol - the building block of testosterone. Based on new research on the rate of metabolism of SDG in flax lignans (8-12 hours on average), the dosage in both products has been revised from once a day to twice a day for optimum results.

Bio-Fen® Plus for Men capsules are usually effective at stopping hair loss within the first two months. However, since healthy hair grows only about 1 cm each month, it may take up to three months before you notice that hair growth is increased or the rate of hair loss is decreased. Anyone experiencing new growth should see it within four months. In some people the original pigmentation may come back. Once you stop completely your hair growth pattern will slowly go back to the point where you started. However, some people may be able to go with a lower maintenance dose.

As before, the saw palmetto extract inhibits the enzyme 5-alpha reductase, and this action slows down the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (or DHT) – the overabundance of which causes the miniaturization of hair follicles. This activity of the saw palmetto also helps to relieve the urinary symptoms of mild to moderate BPH for men. The saw palmetto that originally was an extract standardized to 45% free fatty acids, esters, and sterols while the new formula is a 4:1 extract to support the BPH claim. The product still contains these molecules for hair loss, but they are now at proprietary amounts based on our research so that the competition cannot duplicate our formula.

Bio-Fen® Plus for Men will also help to: • Relieve the urologic symptoms associated with mild to moderate benign prostatic hyperplasia - BPH (e.g. weak urine flow, incomplete voiding, frequent daytime and night time urination).

• Reduce elevated blood lipid levels / hyperlipidemia.

Bio-Fen® Plus for Women The women’s formula is almost the same as the men’s formula. The mechanisms and results for the women formula is the same. The only difference is it contains silicon and iron instead of saw palmetto. Silicon has been shown to contribute to hair shaft strength and thus healthy hair growth. It also contains iron which helps prevent iron deficiency. A number of studies have related sub-clinical iron deficiency in women to diffuse hair loss/alopecia. The increased amount of SDG and other revisions to the regulations allow us to make some additional health claims for Bio-Fen® Plus for Women.

What is the quality of Bio-Fen® Plus for Men? Bio-Fen® Plus for Men is manufactured in Canada according to quality assurance specifications called Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP). This ensures that the ingredients are tested for their level of quality, potency & purity, prior to production and the finished product prior to sale. Hair Grow Technology (Bio-Fen® Plus) is a progressive company - we continually seek out the latest research on bioactive ingredients, and on regulatory updates in the natural health products industry. See our website to locate your nearest store that carries Bio-Fen® Plus.

nother new year, another set of New Year’s resolutions that are doomed to fail. Right? Well, maybe not this year. With a few key strategies, this could be the year that you beat the odds and meet your goals at last. Here’s how: Start with Tracy Holly’s “Aftermath Health Drink” to shake off the effects of all that holiday overeating and help start the new year right. Next, resolve not to “lose 30 pounds” or “exercise twice a day,” but to do something incremental that will result in real, life-long change. Lori Kennedy, RHN, has provided us with 12 tips we can implement month by month to make 2013 our healthiest year yet. Consider the oils you use in food preparation and think about switching out your refined sugar for alternative options, like coconut sugar. Read the advice in this issue of Vista about supplements you may want to try that just might prolong your life and keep you healthy. Our personal health is of the utmost importance, but our well being exists in harmony with the health of our planet. In this issue of Vista, we turn our focus to the David Suzuki Foundation: the visionary who made it all happen (no other than Dr David Suzuki), and the man who works to put these ideas into action, David Suzuki Foundation CEO Peter Robinson. In the wake of David Suzuki’s decision to step down from the Board of Directors of the foundation, their work continues, thankfully, without missing a beat. We at Vista wish a happy, healthy new year to all our readers.

Avoid New Year’s

Resolution Failures with These 12 Fat Loss Tips By Lori Kennedy RHN

H

ave you made a New Year’s resolution? Do you have a clearly defined plan for how to achieve it? If you have resolved to lose those extra pounds, give yourself a well-deserved pat on the back. Keep in mind that it’s important to be realistic about your goals and to implement changes that will be long-lasting and beneficial to your health. Don’t repeat last year’s resolutions failures by falling into the old New Year’s resolution weight loss trap. Following the newest quickfix, fad diet sets off a cascade of harmful metabolic effects, leaving you hungrier then when you started with intense cravings and an

extra 10 pounds of rebound weight gain that you weren’t expecting. Instead of making one large, grandiose New Year’s resolution that you will likely give up on before the end of January, work on implementing smaller, more achievable nutrition and fat loss goals over the next 12 months. Research tells us it takes 21 days to successfully implement a new habit. Resolve to master each monthly habit before moving onto the next one. This way, when you look back and reflect next year, you will be 10 to 20 pounds lighter and empowered by the 12 new healthy habits you have integrated into your life.

Your 2013 Fat Loss Calendar

March: Enjoy an afternoon snack. It’s vital to your fat loss success that you keep blood sugar levels stable. Plan to have your snack between 2pm and 5pm. If you eat a late dinner, have two smaller snacks. Research shows that blood sugar levels dip during these hours of the day. Include a fruit with a good quality fat or lean protein about the size of your fist. April: Stop eating two hours before you go to sleep to aid in good digestion. Sleep is for rejuvenation and cleansing, not digesting food eaten late at night. Plus, consuming calories later in the evening will not aid weight loss. May: Fibre up! Aim to get between 25 and 35 grams of fibre in your diet per day. Fibre helps you feel full, maintains stable blood sugar and pulls out the LDL (bad) cholesterol from your body. By adding half a cup of beans or lentils plus one cup of blackberries to your diet, you have just increased your fibre intake by 16 grams per day. June: Stick to two fruits per day. Eat the whole fruit instead of drinking the juice, even 100 percent juice made with real fruit. Dark coloured fruits are filled with vitamins and antioxidants. A portion of fruit is the size of your fist or a softball. July: Increase filtered water consumption to 8 to 10 cups per day. During the summer heat it’s important to stay properly hydrated. Thirst often masks as hunger and cravings signaling

August: Limit alcoholic beverages to one or two, and only on weekends. It’s easy to go overboard with all the summer fun, especially at barbecues. Bring a healthy appetizer or side dish. Limit alcoholic beverages to one to two drinks per week. September: Gain some lean muscle mass. Muscle burns an extra 50 calories per pound. If you gain an extra five pounds of lean mass, you will be burning an extra 250 calories per day doing nothing, because muscle is metabolically active. Change up your gym routine by implementing a moderate to intense resistance training program. October: Reduce the portion distortion. During the holidays, it’s important to stick to proper portion sizes. Swap out your big plates for smaller ones. Eat off the smaller plates for the entire holiday season. November: Make soups. As the weather changes, so do our cravings for heartier and heavier foods. Allocate one to two hours per week for cooking and preparing one-dish wonders and soups made with root vegetables and lean protein, including lean, grass-fed beef. Soups make for a great side dish or main meal. December: Never go to a party hungry. Plan your “cheats and treats.” This is the hardest time of year to stick to your weight loss goals. Consume about 100 to 200 calories of lean protein or good quality fats before going to any holiday party. The snack won’t ruin your appetite; instead, it will help you keep to your portions and avoid overeating.

However, it looks like the best medicine may have been with us for years, waiting for science to prove its efficacy. And now it has. Nutrition and Your Child’s Immune System By David Whalen

W

e are in the midst of cold and flu season. Our loved ones go off to school and face the potential of unhealthy bacteria, viruses and infection. As parents, we hope we have provided our children with great dietary options and proper meals at home. Often, this is a struggle because the foods we know to be most nutrient-dense don’t always appeal to our children. How often has your child come home from a day of school having not eaten their lunch? How difficult is it for you to encourage your child to eat their greens and finish their meals? What can we do to address this problem?

Nutrition and Immunity

An abstract from the American Journal of Nutrition states the following: “Nutrition is a critical determinant of immune responses and malnutrition the most common cause of immunodeficiency worldwide. Deficiency of single nutrients also results in altered immune responses: this is observed even when the deficiency state is relatively mild. Of the micronutrients, zinc; selenium; iron; copper; vitamins A, C, E, and B-6; and folic acid have important influences on immune responses. These findings have considerable practical and public health significance.” For a complete understanding of the effects of nutrition on immunity, we must rationalize that good nutrition will not prevent you from getting a pandemic flu. Good nutrition will not even prevent you from seeing the complications of the flu. However, good nutrition will provide you with a better opportunity to fight the flu. Good nutrition will ensure you have a fully functioning immune system that is strong enough to fight infections and the flu. Proper nutrition will also provide your body the necessary nutrients and reserves to help fight a flu, virus or infection, especially for instances in which you are too ill to eat. Lastly, good nutrition will help your body potentially identify a virus and improve your chances of limiting complications.

Healthy Choices for Brighter Futures

How can we promote healthy eating for our children in the midst of all the junk food advertising and social influences for poor diet choices? Showing leadership as parents and involving your entire family in fun, healthy choices is a great start. The addition of whole food, sugar-free vitamins and minerals for children is also a great way to help supplement missing nutrients. Look for quality, natural whole food supplements that are fun and enjoyable for your children. Find attractive packaging, character shaped vitamins and great-tasting products that are naturally flavoured. In our world of sugar-laden, poor quality, inexpensive, massmarketed foods, it is great to know that you have fun, high nutrient value supplement choices. Don’t be afraid to look for better options as a parent. You are the leader in your children’s lives and the nutrition you provide them today will help prepare them for a better future. These options can be affordable. You don’t have to fill your grocery basket with low value, poor-nutrition options. There are better choices available. The Animal Parade line by Nature’s Plus, for example, has some wonderful sugar-free and organic whole food options. The line carries great products to help your child enjoy a successful future, everything from DHA chewables to multivitamin liquids. Check your local natural health retailer for the latest options from Animal Parade.

The Fountain of Youth? By Michelle Agustin

T

he legends of Juan Ponce de Leon’s search for the “fountain of youth” are widely circulated; however, if Mr. Ponce de Leon had known about the healthy benefits of HGH, he could have saved himself a lot of time. Good health comes largely from hormone balance, and the traditional aging process can be mainly credited to one hormone: human growth hormone.

The Hormonal Fountain of Youth

Human growth hormone (HGH) is one piece of an entire endocrine system, which is controlled by the brain’s pituitary gland. To maintain that whole-body, glandular health, the health of the pituitary gland is critical. It must be functioning at an optimal level to provide adequate direction to the body’s hormonal processes. If the pituitary gland is out of whack, the fallout affects all the other glandular hormones. Like dominoes, they will also fall, including the thyroid and adrenal glands and the pancreas. The thyroid controls metabolism. The adrenal system controls inflammation, infection, and of course, adrenaline production. The pancreas produces insulin, which regulates blood sugar and digestive enzymes. Human growth hormone is another casualty of a faulty pituitary gland. The younger someone is, the higher that person’s HGH levels are, and the more efficiently they function. As we mature, however, our bodies begin recognizing that the growth process is over, and begin reducing production of the growth hormone that has maintained our youthful vigor. The HGH reduction process usually begins in the 30s and continues declining as we age. Growth Hormone Deficiency (GHD) is a condition in which a person’s anterior pituitary gland fails to produce an adequate amount of normal endogenous growth hormone. In children, it results in dwarfism; in adults, GHD causes deficiencies including loss of muscle and increase of fat, decreased healing ability, a greater risk of cardiovascular disease, loss of bone mass and lower life expectancy – in other words, the symptoms commonly associated with aging. Our hormonal levels aren’t the only thing working against us in the aging process: environmental factors and lifestyle choices have a part to play, as well. While chronologically, we may still be fairly young, biological age can be a whole other story. As any healthy person can attest, looking healthy is a pale substitute for actually feeling healthy, and a big part of feeling healthy is maintaining glandular health. A healthy, stable endocrine system will ensure that your body is “firing on all cylinders.” However, this way of living must be fought for; it is not a given. Because the endocrine system is under constant

16

VISTA MAGAZINE ISSUE 86

attack, it needs constant renewal. We need a real weapon in the healthy aging battle that offers more than a superficial patching of the problem.

Healthy Aging Solutions

Homeopathic HGH offers a safe and gentle way to renew the endocrine system and tap into the youthful potential of true health. Homeopathic preparations are generally regarded as safe by all authorities due to their extreme dilution, which renders their active ingredients nearly undetectable by the most sophisticated of measurements. If we consider our bodies’ natural balance, it only takes a slight shift of adrenaline, thyroxin, or serotonin production to alter our entire systems. Homeopathy works with this understanding, and is known as the “gentle giant.” It works with the body’s natural vibration cycle. Would you choose a sledge hammer to set in a thumb tack? Homeopathic formulas offer a way to enhance immune response, increase lean body mass, stimulate neuro-endocrine system balance, and achieve optimal physical and mental performance. Because of the homeopathic preparation, it achieves these benefits by encouraging the body to produce more of the hormone on its own, “reminding” it of its proper function at the sub-molecular level. At first glance, it may seem too good to be true that a single homeopathic preparation could have so many far-reaching effects. But as we look more closely at the scientific evidence from human studies, and at the physiological interactions between growth hormone and the body’s various symptoms that affect these areas, everything begins to fall into place. With a formulation supported by adrenalinum for the adrenal system, thyroidinum for the thyroid, pituitarum for the pituitary, and insulin for the pancreas, homeopathic HGH covers all the bases to support healthy endocrine function. Homeopathic HGH keeps the pituitary gland and all its subsequent glands in line so that the entire body is balanced and healthy. Homeopathic HGH holds tremendous potential to balance and restore our youthful health, and in turn, abate some of the signs of the aging process. It may be too late for Mr. Ponce de Leon to benefit from today’s scientific advances, but luckily, we can still change the face of healthy aging. What’s All This Talk About

Coconut? By Kathy Maraz RHN

E

verywhere you go now, there seems to a lot of talk about coconut. Many products on the shelves include coconut oil or coconut sugar. Along with the food products and beauty products come the confusing articles telling us that coconut is either good or bad. Being confused myself, I decided to make it simple and explain what all the talk is about. Coconut oil has had a bad rap for many years. Critics have claimed that it is fattening because it is a saturated fat. However, not all fats are created equal. Coconut oil is one of nature’s richest sources of medium chained fatty acids, or triglycerides (MCTs). MCTs are smaller molecules than long chain fatty acids, which is what most vegetable oils are. These smaller chains are more easily broken down by our bodies, meaning they are easily digestible and are burned immediately by the liver for energy. Coconut oil has actually been shown to improve body weight, which can radically reduce your risk of developing type-2 diabetes. Boosting your metabolic rate will improve your energy, speed up healing and improve overall immune function. Coconut oil is beneficial in many ways. It helps improve heart health, boost thyroid function, increase metabolism, promote weight loss and support the immune system. There are many misconceptions about coconut oil, one being that the oil is bad for the heart. In actual fact, it is beneficial for the heart. It contains about 50 percent lauric

acid, which helps in preventing various heart problems including high cholesterol levels and high blood pressure. The saturated fats present in coconut oil are not harmful, as in the case of other vegetable oils. Coconut oil does not lead to an increase in LDL levels. It also reduces the incidence of injury in the arteries and, therefore, helps prevent atherosclerosis. Coconut oil is also good for the skin. When applied topically, it has been found to have anti-aging and regenerative effects. Used to treat infection, it forms a chemical layer that protects the infected body part from external dust, air, fungi, bacteria and virus. The oil is most effective on bruises as it speeds up the healing process by repairing damaged tissues. When applied on skin, coconut oil keeps the skin smooth, due to the presence of saturated fats; coconut oil also retains the moisture content of the skin. When ingested (through regular consumption of coconut oil), these fats are deposited under the skin, thus keeping it healthy. Coconut oil also protects skin from microbial infections. Coconut oil is a great skin softener and helps you do away with dry, hard skin. Another coconut product we hear about is coconut palm sugar. Coconut sugar is a natural sugar derived from the flowers of the coconut trees. It is also not highly processed and has no additives, bleaching agents or chemicals. The only processing that takes place is heating the

coconut sap to evaporate its water content. Coconut sugar is considered healthier compared to other natural and artificial sugar substitutes. It has a low glycemic index (GI) and is more nutritious than typical granulated sugar. (The glycemic index provides a measure of how quickly blood sugar levels rise after eating a particular type of food.)The GI of coconut sugar is 35, whereas white sugar is 65. Although new to the western world, it has been used as a traditional sweetener for generations, particularly in Southeast Asian countries where the coconut tree grows in abundance. Getting to the Heart of Heart Health:

Your Choices Matter! By Jolie Root LPN, LNC

iven that heart disease is still the leading cause of death in North America, we need to put heart health at the top of our list of priorities when deciding which foods to eat and which supplements to take. The following suggestions are beneficial to your heart health and longevity. Eat Mediterranean Style If you want to live to a ripe old age, your best bet is to follow the Mediterranean diet. That diet, rich in fruit, vegetables, whole grains, fish and olive oil, has consistently been linked to longevity and reduced risk of diabetes, heart disease and cancer. The recently published Northern Manhattan Study found that higher consumption of a Mediterranean-style diet was associated with decreased risk of cardiovascular events including stroke, heart attack, and deadly blood clots in the legs. A large Italian study involving 30,000 women found that those who consumed more leafy green vegetables and olive oil were much less likely to suffer from coronary heart disease. One possible reason is the high folate content of the leafy greens. In a recent meta analysis of 14 studies assessing blood folate, those with the highest folate intake had a 31 percent reduced risk of coronary heart disease.

Go Nuts! Don’t be afraid to go nuts – for walnuts, that is! Walnuts are loaded with the highest amount of powerful antioxidants called polyphenols. These compounds are believed to reduce heart disease risk by lowering levels of blood cholesterol, improving blood flow, and cooling the inflammation that’s been linked to heart disease. Heart Smart Fish Oil The leader among heart smart supplements is fish oil omega-3. Scores of studies have looked at the association of intake of the omega-3 fats found in fish, EPA and DHA, and the risk of heart disease. This year began with another finding that supports taking fish oils. In a group of 48,627 women, low intake of EPA and DHA was linked to an increased risk of heart disease. In this group of women, those who never ate fish had triple the risk of cardiovascular disease compared with women who ate fish. Even eating fish once a week was protective. Another study found that in young healthy adults, omega-3 supplements reduced cardiovascular reactivity to stress. Participants took 1,400 mg of combined EPA/DHA for three weeks, and when tests were given to induce stress, blood vessel reactivity was significantly reduced. For best results, aim for

1,000 to 2,000 mg daily of combined EPA and DHA to protect your heart and to keep your blood vessels healthy. Supplementing at that level has the potential to reduce your risk of heart disease up to 90 percent! Love the Sunshine Vitamin The sunshine vitamin should be on your list, too, because vitamin D may reduce the risk of heart disease. In a new study, researchers evaluated data on 44,592 men who were initially heart disease and cancer-free from the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study. The researchers determined that men who consumed larger amounts of vitamin D had a decreased risk of heart disease. And, be sure to take your vitamin C. The Japan Collaborative Cohort Study determined that high vitamin C intake was linked to a reduced risk of dying from heart disease. Taking 1,000 to 3,000 mg daily should be the perfect amount to protect your ticker.

t least two, maybe three generations of Canadians can easily pinpoint the one person during their lifetimes who has changed the way they perceive science and nature. One man who possesses a unique power to make us inquisitive, awed, and full of respect for our natural world and the scientific mechanisms that allow it to thrive. That man, of course, is Dr David Suzuki, and there is simply no one else like him. Almost all of us came to collectively know and be inspired by this world-renowned geneticist and environmentalist through one of the most successful Canadian television shows ever produced, CBC’s The Nature of Things, which is currently, astonishingly, in its fifty-third season. From the minute to the colossal, the sheer wonder of natural phenomena depicted in the wildly varied episodes of the show has been nothing short of exquisite over the many years. For the increasing number of people living in urban areas and perhaps losing their connection with nature, this show has been a lifeline to the natural world – albeit through an electronic medium. Dr Suzuki’s list of awards and achievements is staggering, and includes the UNESCO Kalinga Prize for Science, the United Nations Environment Program Medal, and the Right Livelihood Award, which is considered an alternative Nobel Prize. In 2000, Dr Suzuki received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the University of British Columbia, where he is currently Professor Emeritus. He has been awarded a staggering 25 honorary doctorate degrees from universities across Canada, into the US and as far away as Australia. It’s no surprise that Suzuki is also an Officer of the Order of Canada.

is simple and direct. In his recent book, The Legacy, Suzuki writes: “Extinction of a species is natural in the evolutionary scheme of life on Earth – 99.9099% of all species that have ever existed are extinct. But we are an infant species, arriving very recently, perhaps 150,000 years ago in the plains of Africa, and yet now the once unthinkable, the coming extinction of our own species, is actually conceivable. Our trajectory to dominance of the planet has been spectacular, but we have not fully comprehended the price of that success.” At age 76, as he prepares to leave a legacy that is widespread and meaningful, Suzuki wants us to feel personally responsible for our actions and recognize the impact of brash indifference, wastefulness and greed. “It shouldn’t be surprising to realize that using finite resources in a wasteful manner and at a pace much faster than the Earth’s ability to replenish them is economic folly,” he writes in a recent article. “Nor

Canada’s Environmentalist

Over the past two decades, Dr Suzuki has received far more press for his environmental activities and forthright opinions than his prolific, award-winning broadcasting endeavours. Through numerous articles, public speaking engagements, a handful of books, plenty of multimedia channels and, above all, the David Suzuki Foundation, Suzuki has become the face of Canadian and global environmentalism. “It has been my lot to be a Cassandra or Chicken Little, warning about imminent disaster,” he writes in his most recent book, a late-life reflection on his life, career, and the state of the natural world. “But it gives me no satisfaction at all to think my concerns may be validated by my grandchildren’s generation.” Incorporated in 1990, the David Suzuki Foundation has come under plenty of fire over the years. Suzuki himself has been called a zealot, a crackpot and an extremist. His foundation’s lobbying against harmful industry practices and government policies has made him many enemies – and plenty of ardent supporters. Their work has benefited everything from clam and salmon habitats to logging practices near First Nations communities; has taught us about sustainable food choices and how we can lessen our impact on the Earth; and has made us collectively aware of greenhouse gasses and climate change. Suzuki’s work has shifted our thinking at the individual and government level, though there have been a great many setbacks along the way, including recent changes to government policy that crush plans to protect numerous Canadian lakes, rivers and oceans. Perhaps Suzuki’s greatest accomplishment is the big picture reckoning he provides. His message is often at its most powerful when it

should we be surprised to learn that polluting, damaging and destroying the natural systems that keep us alive and healthy will not be good for our long-term prosperity, economic or otherwise.” These are not radical or extreme notions; they are simply words of encouragement for us to open our eyes to our damaging personal and corporate behaviours. “We must learn to shift our ways of thinking,” he writes. “We need to conserve resources and energy and stop being so destructive.” Simple as that.

Stepping Down

In early 2012, Suzuki faced mounting speculation regarding the alleged political activities of his foundation – from sources that had the power to revoke the charitable status of the foundation. In April 2012, he announced his decision to step down from the board of directors of the David Suzuki Foundation, and to continue only in a volunteer capacity. “I have reached a point in my life where I would like to consider myself an elder,” he wrote in an open letter, published on the foundation’s website and widely distributed through the media. “I want to speak freely without fear that my words will be deemed too political, and harm the organization of which I am so proud. I am keenly aware that some governments, industries and special interest groups are working hard to silence us. They use threats to the Foundation’s charitable status in attempts to mute its powerful voice on issues that matter deeply to you and many other Canadians.” It seemed like a move that all sides might consider radical. Yet, according to David Suzuki Foundation CEO Peter Robinson, it was no such thing. “There’s been no change to the direction of the organization,” said Robinson in a recent discussion with Vista. “David was one of 12 directors on the board. The board continues to make decisions based on the goals of the organization and the values of the individuals around the table.” “There was a lot of scrutiny of environmental charities to see whether they were engaged in political activities,” continued Robinson. “David and the foundation made the decision that one of the ways they could help mitigate those crazy accusations – and they were nonsense accusations – was to remove the piece that was the controversy.”

Moving Forward

Robinson’s role in the David Suzuki Foundation is to champion the foundation’s cause while implementing strategy to reflect Suzuki’s unique ability to connect with Canadians on issues of the environment, nature and science. “My personal goal,” said Robinson, “is to take David’s vision and operationalize it Peter Robinson, CEO of the David Suzuki Foundation within the organization in such a way that we as an organization are successful in helping Canadians understand their links with the natural world, their dependence

on the natural environment, and that their health is completely intertwined with the health of natural systems.” The foundation’s projects align with these objectives. Taking the ideal to the specific, that means, as Robinson says, projects that focus on education, energy systems, urban green belts and food systems – “all things that we use to tell a bigger story but allow for action to be undertaken at a local level or at a policy level where change can occur.” In recent years, the foundation has begun to focus more on the individual. While policy change remains paramount to their success as an organization, a new focus on people-created challenges has led to a different way of approaching problems. And while the individual may feel insignificant up against the major industry polluters of the world and the powerful governments that allow them to continue, change at the personal level allows for an element of individual control. “If nothing else,” remarks Robinson, “the individual should feel that they can take control of their lives, minimize their impact, and trust that when others join them in that, it will make a difference.” Part of the challenge, then, is promoting a greater connection with the environment in younger populations. In our heyday of urban conveniences, video games and technology, are today’s youth drifting increasingly further from any understanding or appreciation of nature? “The way a young person develops a greater appreciation of their role in the natural world, and learns to respect it, is by actually experiencing it. So our efforts are not necessarily the provision of information; but the ability to promote meaningful experiences outside of their homes,” said Robinson. Big industry and government may be causing many of our most pressing environmental concerns but, in the end, it is individuals that control those interests. Perhaps, with today’s efforts, the future heads of future corporations will temper their lust for monetary gain with a modicum of respect for the planet. Perhaps we will come to consider practices that harm the planet simply unthinkable. Robinson assures us there is hope. “Hope comes from the fact we do have the ability, individually and collectively, to overcome the challenges we face. We have the ingenuity, we have the resources, we have all the tools necessary to solve our problems right now. It’s a matter of applying them.” The application of solutions is what the foundation does best. On the strength of Suzuki’s persona and firmly held beliefs, Robinson can move forward with strategy reflecting the David Suzuki Foundation’s ideals. “David says we must act on the understanding that we are interconnected and interdependent with nature. It’s a vision that I have come increasingly to believe is the foundation for what we do. That simple story is formative to my own belief in how to approach my work at the foundation and in my own life,” said Robinson. In the end, Peter Robinson sees a better future. “I’m an optimist!” he admits. “It is my belief that people will ultimately act in the best interests of the environment going forward, particularly as it relates to their children and grandchildren.” Suzuki reflects a similar sentiment at the end of his new book: “My grandchildren are my stake in the near future, and it is my most fervent hope that they might say one day, ‘Grandpa was part of a great movement that helped turn things around for us.’ I also hope that they might remember my most valuable lesson and be able to say, ‘Grandpa taught us how to catch and clean a fish. Let’s go catch one for dinner.’”

here is no civilized dialogue between the environment and politics. If there was, the conversation regarding the proposed Enbridge Northern Gateway Project – consisting of two 1,200 km pipelines that would dangerously carry some 700,000 barrels of oil and toxic condensate from the Alberta tar sands to Kitimat, BC per day – would no doubt have ceased before it began. Thankfully, though, opposition to the project is great; a combination of environmentally concerned citizens demonstrating, widely cycling petitions and nonprofit organizations are all aiming to provide a priceless voice for the voiceless and an inkling of foresight in the face of blatant environmental disregard. In a fact sheet regarding the “what ifs” of the pipeline construction, the Pembina Institute, a non-profit advocacy group for environmental sustainability, noted that: “the Enbridge oil sands pipelines would cross and in some places run parallel to major salmon rivers in British Columbia’s Upper Fraser, Skeena and Kitimat watersheds, which contain some of the highest quality habitat for wild salmon, steelhead trout and many other fish species in Canada. The aforementioned and a vast assortment of other fish species all use the rivers and lakes in these watersheds for spawning, rearing and migrating. Pipeline construction, ruptures and leaks all pose serious risks to salmon, making the Enbridge oil sands pipelines a toxic proposal for the communities that depend on them. And experience indicates that a spill of some sort will inevitably occur.” And it will. The National Energy Board estimated that large petroleum pipelines will experience a spill every 16 years for every 1,000 kilometers in length as per their Analysis of Ruptures and Trends on Major Canadian Pipeline Systems, which was published in 2004. When asked about what the impacts of a rupture near the Fraser and Skeena river fisheries would mean to the habitat and people who depend on them, Leslie Anthony, a zoologist and herpetologist who has studied developmental genetics in British Columbia, said, “If there is even a small spill in either of those rivers it would be a disaster for the fisheries, both short and long term, and devastating to aboriginal people’s way of life.” Anthony continued, “The salmon stocks that are currently in such a fragile state could be completely eliminated by only

a small spill at the wrong time in the wrong place, knocking numbers below critical levels for genetic health of the population and making it impossible to recover. We are 22 years out on the Exxon Valdez spill and none of the fish in that area – whether oceanic or river-running – have recovered or show signs that they ever will. And no amount of money can repair a destroyed ecosystem that requires hundreds of years to recover.” Nearly every year, oil pipelines in North America spill unprecedented amounts of oil into the environment. In July 2010, Enbridge’s own Lakehead pipeline ruptured near Battle Creek, Michigan, spilling an estimated four million litres of crude oil into the Kalamazoo River, making it the largest oil spill in Midwest U.S. history. Although Enbridge claims to have a rigorous pipeline safety program, there are serious questions being asked regarding both maintenance of its pipelines and its response to the oil spill. The old adage, “an ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure” is appropriate in this circumstance. On top of the obvious damage, “clean-up attempts can be more damaging than the oil itself, with impacts recurring as long as clean-up (including both chemical and physical methods) continues,” writes Cutler J. Cleveland, a Professor of Earth and Environment at Boston University. “Because of the pervasiveness of strong biological interactions in rocky intertidal and kelp forest communities, cascades of delayed, indirect impacts (especially of biogenic habitat loss) expand the scope of injury well beyond the initial direct losses and thereby also delay recoveries.” Will it happen? Will we see an Enbridge pipeline constructed? “No,” Anthony says. “It will never happen as proposed; public opposition is too high and it’s currently political suicide.” And thus the mute have managed to speak.

Are We Trading Away Our Rights and Environment? By David Suzuki with contributions from Ian Hanington

G

lobal trade has advantages. For starters, it allows those of us who live through winter to eat fresh produce year-round. And it provides economic benefits to farmers who grow that food. That could change as oil, the world’s main transport fuel, becomes increasingly scarce, hard to obtain and costly, but we’ll be trading with other nations for the foreseeable future. Because countries often have differing political and economic systems, agreements are needed to protect those invested in trade. Canada has signed numerous deals, from the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) to several Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreements (FIPA), and is subject to the rules of global trade bodies, such as the World Trade Organization (WTO). Treaties, agreements and organizations to help settle disputes may be necessary, but they often favour the interests of business over citizens. With Canada set to sign a 31-year trade deal with China, a repressive and undemocratic country with state-owned corporations, we need to be cautious. Should we sign agreements if they subject our workers to unfair competition from lower-paid employees from investor nations, hinder our ability to protect the environment or give foreign companies

28

VISTA MAGAZINE ISSUE 86

and governments excessive control over local policies and valuable resources? Under some agreements, basics like protecting the air, water and land we all need for survival can become difficult and expensive. One recent case could put Canada on the hook for $250 million. Quebec has put a hold on fracking pending a study into the environmental impacts of blasting massive amounts of water, sand and chemicals into the ground to fracture rock and release gas deposits. A U.S. resource company plans to sue Canada under Chapter 11 of NAFTA, claiming compensation for the moratorium’s damage to its drilling interests. Similar disputes have already cost Canada millions of dollars. Ontario also wants assurances that fracking is safe before it allows the practice. That province is facing costs and hurdles because of another conflict between trade and environment. Japan and the European Union filed a complaint with the WTO, claiming a requirement under the Ontario Green Energy Act that wind and solar projects must use a set percentage of local materials is unfair. Many of the problems arise because of an investor-state arbitration mechanism, which is included in NAFTA, as well as the proposed Canada-China FIPA, Canada-European Union Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement and Trans-Pacific Partnership. It allows foreign

investors to bring claims before outside arbitrators if they believe their economic interests are being harmed by a nation’s actions or policies. So economics trump national interests. This has caused many countries, including Australia, South Africa, India and several in Latin America, to avoid signing deals that include the investor-state arbitration mechanism. In Australia’s case, the country recognized the pitfalls when tobacco companies, including Philip Morris, attempted to claim damages under a bilateral investment treaty after the federal government introduced a science-based law requiring cigarettes to be sold in plain, unappealing packages. According to Australian National University law professor Thomas Faunce, Philip Morris then lobbied the U.S. government to include a similar mechanism in a new trade agreement it was negotiating with Australia. In an article for Troy Media, Faunce wrote that with such a mechanism, the International Centre for the Settlement of Investment Disputes “would, in effect, become the final arbitrators on major Australian public policy questions concerning mineral royalties, fossil fuel and renewable energy, water, telecommunications, banking, agriculture and power.” The 31-year trade agreement between Canada and China is wor-

risome, with its 15-year opt-out clause (compared to just six months for NAFTA), but the inclusion of the mechanism in other agreements is also cause for concern. At the very least, we could be on the hook for millions or billions of dollars if our environmental, health, labour or other policies were deemed to harm the interests of those investing in or trading with Canada. The government’s desire to expand global trade may be understandable, but we mustn’t give away too much. We must tell our elected representatives to at least delay the Canada-China FIPA until it has been examined more thoroughly, and to reconsider the inclusion of investor-state arbitration mechanisms in all trade deals.

Is Your Shampoo

Poisoning the Environment? By Michael Bloch

I

used to be a hair products sort of guy back in the day. Expensive shampoos, conditioners, gel, mousse – everything. Priorities and perceptions change, so most of the hair products went by the wayside until all I was left with was shampoo. Good for me: I was doing my bit for the environment and saving cash to boot. But I took a close look at the brand of shampoo I was using at the time and my hair stood on end. The front label stated “Vitamin E Moisture Rich Shampoo,” but what I read on the back made me wonder about the volume of potential environmental toxins I had been washing down the drain for more than three decades, simply through washing my hair. Having a blackwater system at the time for recycling household waste water also made me a little more conscious about this kind of thing. By sending chemicals down the drains that upset the good bacteria, they couldn’t do their job properly in chewing up all the nasties. Throw it out of balance, and restoring the balance can take a long while. Below are the ingredients of my shampoo – and what I discovered about them. The first group of ingredients are ones that are nonharmful for use in shampoos, depending on their extraction process: • Camellia sensis leaf extract • Fennel • Fruit extract • Epilobium angustifolium • Sunflower extract • Hazel leaf extract • Sweet almond fruit extract • Citric acid Other ingredients like tocopheryl acetate (vitamin E), panthenol (vitamin B5) and sodium chloride (common salt) are fine. But what about the following long list of known or potentially harmful ingredients? • Sodium laureth sulfate – Used in clinical testing as a primary skin irritant. Tests on lab animals indicate material may cause mutagenic effects. • Cocamidopropyl betaine – Potential irritant and potentially contaminated with or breaking down into chemicals linked to cancer. • Ammonium chloride – Harmful if swallowed. May be harmful by inhalation. Skin, eye and respiratory irritant. • Quaternium-22 – May contain harmful impurities or form toxic breakdown products. • Propylene glycol – Allows other chemicals to penetrate into the skin, suspected respiratory, skin or sense organ, immunotoxicity and neurotoxicity hazards. • Polyquaternium-10 – A mildly irritating toxic polymer. • Tetrasodium EDTA – Allows other chemicals to penetrate into the skin. • Hexylene glycol – A neurotoxin, sensitizer and irritant. • Triethanolomine – May contain residual levels of nitrosamines, a carcinogen.

30

VISTA MAGAZINE ISSUE 86

• Methylchloroisothiazolinone – An immune system toxin and lung sensitizer. • Limonene – Extracted from citrus rind, but can pose potential risks to wildlife and the environment through water contamination. Carcinogenic to some animals. • Fragrance (I hate to think) contains more than 30 ingredients! And we’re not done yet! The remaining ingredients have not been assessed for safety by the Cosmetics Ingredient Review Board, so we cannot be sure of their potential risks: • Butylene glycol • Geraniol • Butylphenyl methylpropional • Linalool • Hexyl cinnamal OK, so before I start sounding overly paranoid, I’m well aware that everything is made up of chemicals – even natural ingredients; and “natural” doesn’t necessarily mean non-toxic. Two potentially nasty chemicals can also combine to make something quite stable and useful – e.g.; sodium + chloride = salt. The type and level of chemical hazard also greatly depends on quantity and manufacturing – but the point is, they are being manufactured in bulk, and that in itself requires huge energy inputs and poses risks for the environment. Nature may produce similar chemicals, but it’s a natural process in harmony with the planet and environment. Like so many other products in our modern lives, many chemicals used in shampoos have their origins as derivatives of crude oil. I wound up making a switch to a very simple castile soap, which is a type of soap based on vegetable oil. I can’t comment on “body and bounce” as my hair is short these days, but it feels soft and looks clean. While castile soap won’t suit everyone’s hair; if you’re concerned about the amount of chemicals in the products you buy, perhaps it’s worth a try – there are also other more environmentally friendly shampoos now on the market. But don’t be fooled. Greenwashing is rampant when it comes to personal care products. A green-themed ad for shampoo on I saw recently on TV was extolling the virtue of the product containing 90 percent biodegradable ingredients. Only 90 percent? It might sound good, but think of how many litres or gallons of shampoo you might go through a year and consider how many people on this planet use shampoos – even a 10 percent non-biodegradable component is significant. What does your shampoo bottle say? Could you be unwittingly poisoning yourself and the environment? Research the ingredients listed on your shampoo bottle.

Taming Tummy Troubles By Lorna R. Vanderhaeghe, M.S.

T

he American College of Gastroenterology says that over 50 million North Americans are suffering with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), 20 million have stomach ulcers and 100 million suffer heartburn. More than one in three people are plagued with common digestive problems. The International Foundation for Bowel Dysfunction says that IBS is second only to the common cold as a cause of absenteeism from work. Greasy fried foods, a lack of fibre-rich foods, enzyme-depleted processed foods and just too much food overall are the mainstays of our diet. We are often in such a hurry when we eat that we barely chew our food before we swallow it. Treating our stomachs like a human garburator has negative consequences. Dietary inadequacies are directly linked to the development of gastrointestinal diseases. Irritable bowel syndrome, also called spastic colon, is a disturbance of the colon or large intestine, where alternating bouts of chronic diarrhea or constipation occur. Often, IBS is confused with a much more serious group of bowel diseases called inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), a general term used for Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis

where inflammation of the bowel causes anemia, fever and weight loss. We have all experienced the odd bout of heartburn, nausea, diarrhea, gas, bloating, burping, abdominal cramps and constipation. Ignoring these complaints may lead to more serious intestinal distress. Ninety percent of symptoms can be alleviated with simple dietary changes, the elimination of allergy-causing foods, stress reduction and immune enhancement.

Food and the Gut Reaction

While diet is the main factor in aggravating intestinal distress, food allergy is another. Common allergens include wheat, eggs and dairy products. Celiac disease is the most serious form of food allergy to gluten-containing grains. Food allergies can also be exacerbated by “leaky gut syndrome.” An overgrowth of unhealthy organisms that upset the delicate balance of good gut flora is thought to cause leaky gut syndrome. When the gut lining is damaged, bacteria, invaders and undigested food enter the bloodstream, causing the immune system to mount an assault on the invaders, which in turn causes an inflam-

matory and allergic response. To help you understand the relationship between the foods you eat and your digestive symptoms, write down everything you eat for a couple of weeks in a diet diary. Avoiding foods that aggravate your condition will allow your gut time to heal.

Intestinal Invaders Wreak Havoc

More than 60 percent of the immune system is actively working around the gut to keep parasites, bacteria and other organisms under control. By regulating the immune system to more effectively destroy invaders, we can protect the digestive tract. Parasites, bacteria and viruses have been implicated in many digestive disturbances. Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) are now an accepted cause of stomach ulcers. Crohn’s disease may be caused by bacterial infections. Viruses can cause stomach flu, and parasites have been known to keep many tropical vacationers locked in the bathroom.

Relief Provided by Mother Nature

Relief from digestive troubles is often sought in the form of antacids, anti-diarrhea medications, laxatives and much stronger prescription medications. The good news is that natural remedies provide safe, effective relief for gut complaints. Peppermint cools distress: Ross Pelton, R.Ph., pharmacist and clinical nutritionist and co-author of The Nutritional Cost of Prescription Drugs, evaluated the research data on peppermint. He states, “Peppermint tea has been used in treating children’s digestive problems such as colic, gas and upset stomach. The enteric coated oil of peppermint is used routinely in Europe to reduce cramping, to relieve gas and to increase bile, with its most prevalent use in irritable bowel syndrome.” Nutrients are essential: Nutrient deficiencies are commonplace among those with gastrointestinal disorders. A multi-vitamin with minerals, an antioxidant supplement and extra zinc should be taken to replenish nutrient stores. Iron deficiency anemia is often present in bowel disorders and you should have a blood test to determine your iron status. Damage to the surface cells of the digestive tract often impairs vitamin B12 absorption. B12 injections may be required to ensure optimal absorption. Probiotics enhance immunity: Poor nutritional choices and excessive use of antibiotics have weakened the body’s ability to attack and destroy potential disease-causing bacteria, parasites and viruses. Probiotics including bifidobacterium have been shown to increase gamma-interferon, an important immune-enhancing protein that prevents viruses from replicating. Also noted was a reduction in inflammatory responses of the gut. Another important immune protein called IgE is very effective at destroying parasites. Its action was significantly enhanced when a special probiotic called BB536 was added to the diet. BB536 is a powerful probiotic that has been extensively researched for curing colitis, irritable bowel syndrome and reducing the risk of gastric cancers. No other probiotic has the extensive research that BB536 has for gut diseases. Look for BB536 at your local health food store. Natural anti-inflammatories can help: New evidence has found that inflammatory factors secreted by the immune system are associated with damage to the intestinal wall and increased inflammation in bowel disease. Several studies have shown that when large doses of GLA fatty acids were taken, a reduction in inflammation occurred. Curcumin, the yellow pigment in tumeric, has also been found effective at lowering the inflammatory factors associated with inflammation in the body. By normalizing immune function and halting inflammatory cytokines, we can put an end to inflammatory bowel diseases. Most digestive problems are not serious, but if you have rectal bleeding, fever, sharp abdominal pain or intestinal obstruction, consult your physician immediately. If not, adopt these tips for repairing your digestive tract and enjoy freedom from intestinal distress.

10 Tummy Pleasing Tips 1. Halt heartburn

Heartburn is anything but harmless. It carries a 43 percent higher risk of developing esophagus cancer compared to those who do not suffer heartburn or indigestion. To reduce heartburn, let your belt out a couple of notches, raise the head of your bed a few inches from the foot, chew your food until it is mush, stop smoking, don’t drink with your meal and lose a few pounds.

2. Aid digestion

Take digestive plant enzymes with every meal and gas, bloating and bowel movements will improve. You may not produce enough stomach acid to break down your food properly, resulting in bloating and indigestion. Don’t dilute your stomach acid or enzymes by drinking during your meal.

3. Enhance immunity

Take immune supportive nutrients like Beta 1,3/1,6 glucans, which will build a strong immune system and control inflammation.

4. Reduce stress

Intestinal flare-ups, colitis, Crohn’s and excess acid production are often associated with increased stress. The connection between stress, the immune system and inflammation is now clear. Do whatever it takes to reduce your stress levels. Meditation, yoga, breathing exercises or a walk in the park can help reduce the intestinal affects of stress.

5. No NSAIDS

Using non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs increases your risk of upper gastrointestinal ulcer, bleeding and digestive difficulties. Use Celadrin, NEM eggshell membrane, and curcumin as safe alternatives to NSAIDS.

6. Diet is everything

Eat seven to 10 half-cup servings of organic fruits and vegetables every day. If you don’t eat raw vegetables regularly, start by steaming your vegetables. Eat one half cup of probiotic-rich yogurt every day unless you are lactose intolerant. Lactose intolerance is a common cause of tummy troubles. Stop all dairy products for six weeks and see if your gut distress is relieved. Drink almond or rice milk instead. Cut out the white pasta, white rice and white flour.

7. Tea and lemon

Get your digestive juices flowing by starting your day with a cup of herbal tea with a teaspoon of fresh-squeezed lemon juice fifteen minutes before your breakfast. Switch to herbal tea, as coffee aggravates gut problems. Drink peppermint, fennel or ginger tea to soothe a troubled tummy.

8. Eat small meals

Big meals are hard to digest. Eating small meals throughout the day will not only help heal stomach problems but keep your blood sugar in a healthy range. Sit, relax and enjoy your food – remember: digestion begins in your mouth.

9. Say no to fake sugars

Look for the herbal sweetener stevia at your health food store. Sorbitol and other artificial sweeteners can create gas, bloating and increased diarrhea. White sugar has been found to reduce the activity of certain immune cells that fight bacteria, viruses, parasites and cancer. As little as one teaspoon of white sugar inactivates these important immune cells for up to six hours.

10. Fabulous fibre Lorna Vanderhaeghe is the author of 11 books. With degrees in biochemistry and nutrition, she is a nutritional medicine expert. Her first two books were written on the immune system, including The Immune System Cure and Healthy Immunity. Visit her website at www.healthyimmunity.com for more information.

Combat constipation and control diarrhea by adding increased fibre from ground flax seeds, psyllium, guar gum or pectin to your daily regimen. Drink six to 10 glasses of purified water every day, especially if you are taking fibre supplements. VISTA MAGAZINE ISSUE 86

Aftermath Health Drink By Tracy Kaye Holly, CSNA Master

ave you gained unwanted body fat recently? Is your energy level low? Is your skin dull and dry? Are your bowel movements irregular or painful? Are you craving sweets or alcohol? Are you suffering from sleep deprivation? Many of these symptoms are common after the holiday celebrations have come and gone, and if any sound familiar, it’s likely you’re feeling the aftermath of a rich diet of fancy fare and late nights over the past month. The Aftermath Health Drink will increase your energy so you can get back on track to commence the New Year with a bang! This drink recipe is easy to prepare and the benefits are well worth the effort. Imagine a drink that will assist in building up your immune system, aid in holiday fat loss and act as a powerful tonic for a sore throat, or nasal or bronchial infection. Fresh ginger can be very helpful for managing symptoms of alcohol withdrawal. Ginger acts as a natural antacid by buffering and neutralizing excess acid. It is well known as an effective anti-inflammatory in sports nutrition and helps soothe the lining of the gastrointestinal tract. Fresh garlic has proven antibiotic properties. It functions as a febrifuge, which reduces and prevents fever; a vermifuge, which expels parasites; a sudorific, which promotes sweating; and a diuretic, which boosts the excretion of unwanted fluids. Garlic is good for what ails you! Chili peppers contain capsaicin, the potent substance that gives them their fiery character. Almost 80 percent of the capsaicin in a chili

resides in its seeds and membranes. Chilies can act as a beneficial digestive tonic; they also provide therapeutic benefits for the heart and arteries. Chilies are a great source of vitamin C and valuable antioxidants.

Ingredients:

2 litres of filtered water 2 bulbs grated garlic 1 cup chopped onions 4 tablespoons chopped fresh ginger ½ teaspoon cumin ½ teaspoon red chili peppers ¾ cup freshly squeezed lemon juice (add at the end of cooking)

Directions: • • • • •

Combine ingredients in a large pot. Simmer for one hour. Strain into a pitcher. Add fresh lemon juice. Refrigerate and drink throughout the day or night.

You can also drink the Aftermath Health Drink warmed to enjoy both the taste and the benefits. This is also a delicious broth to make any type of soup. Also try adding the strained ingredients to brown rice with chopped pineapple. Healthy and delicious!

Ninety-five Percent Deficiency Raises Eyebrows By Rose Macmillan

A

re you part of the five percent of the population that is getting enough magnesium? Chances are pretty darn good that you’re a member of the other ninety-five percent – those with magnesium deficiency. Just think: that means if you have ten friends in a room together, nine to ten of you likely have low magnesium. When essentially everyone in every room is battling the same problem, it’s time to ask some questions. The average North American diet today provides less than half of our daily recommended magnesium intake – though some believe it is drastically less. The signs and symptoms of magnesium deficiency may be so prevalent that we write them off as minor annoyances, or attribute them to other causes. Yet magnesium is one of the most important elements for the human body, as it aids in energy production, protein synthesis, bone formation, creation of new cells, contraction and relaxation of muscles and activation of B vitamins. Magnesium also helps with the proper functioning of the nerves, heart, kidneys, adrenals and brain.

Symptoms of Low Levels of Magnesium

The following is a list of problems that can appear in people with low levels of magnesium: • Sleep disorders • Insomnia • Fatigue • High blood pressure • Tensions of the body • PMS • Kidney stones • Bone spurs • Osteoporosis • Muscle cramps • Irregular heartbeat • Backache • Headache • Irritability • CFS (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) • CVND (Cardiovascular Nutritional Deficiency) • Depression • Constipation

• • • • • •

Lack of mental acuity Accelerated aging Eye and facial tics Tourette’s syndrome Heavy metal poisoning Oxygen deprivation

It is not completely clear what long-term damage is being done to the body by having low levels of magnesium. Suffice it to say, maintaining proper levels of magnesium is crucial to good health.

Supplemental Magnesium

Part of the problem is that, even if you are already supplementing with magnesium, your body may still not be receiving the quantity it requires. That’s because most supplements travel through the digestive system and are difficult for your body to absorb. Ionic liquid magnesium is one of the most effective ways to increase your body’s magnesium levels – and improve your health.

Go Ionic today! You have nothing to lose and your health to gain!

Don’t Forget About Calcium

Calcium is also required for bone and joint health, but without magnesium it cannot be properly absorbed by the body and your body can actually retain too much calcium. Neither your calcium nor your magnesium can be properly absorbed and utilized by your body if it is not in ionic form. Ionic supplementation bypasses the digestive system altogether. Instead, the small, electrically charged ions are absorbed through the sublingual and mucous membranes of the mouth. This allows the supplement to be absorbed directly into your cells, ensuring maximum absorption. With balanced levels of magnesium and calcium, your cells can function properly and you will experience improved energy, more restful sleep, less joint and bone pain, a healthier heart and lower cholesterol levels.

Time to Compete:

Part III By Dr Cory Holly

I

n part two of this four-part series, I reviewed the concept of periodization as it relates to my preparation for Mr. Hawaii 2013. Periodize means to manipulate, modify or change multiple training variables over time – things like reps, sets, exercises, angles, intensity, frequency, and so on. Periodization provides a great psychological edge. Each and every workout is fresh and alive. Of enormous significance is the measureable reduction in injury risk, especially if you train hard. (My personal motto is, “Train hard or go home.”) When you periodize workouts, you know that what you’re doing one day in the gym will soon change for the better. It’s called constant progression. Each three month mesocycle is calculated in advance and is based on the primary objective of staying well and functional up to and including contest day. Biological bodybuilding, the original and only authentic form of natural bodybuilding, is all about creating symmetry and wellness. Step by step, hand by hand and chisel by chisel, I hone my physical frame down to what appears to be solid muscle. I

38

learn how to master my emotions. I am pursuing the objective of achieving physical excellence. The ultimate irony and beauty of natural bodybuilding is that muscle is the health engine of the body. The old timers were right. Train hard, eat more protein, rest and sleep. Serve to be served. I now invite you to examine my standard daily diet. It is by no means typical when compared to most people on the planet. How do I know that? Simple: I’ve travelled to six continents for the last 40 years and have visited over 5,000 gyms and health food stores. I have also worked, lived and eaten with dozens of native, local and culturally enhanced population groups. Unfortunately, refined, dead, sterile food is being eaten everywhere by huge numbers of people. It is eaten by the most refined and sophisticated, as well as the most ignorant and uneducated. Dead, refined food is today’s norm, not fresh, whole, organic food. The distribution of dead, toxic, harmful food to our species is perpetrated on the young, the innocent and the ignorant, and it has no boundary or moral code. It behaves like an infectious bacteria or virulent disease.

It has permeated every culture and every society in the world with roads, shipping ports or landing strips. Any isolated society with any means of communication including radio, TV or the internet is vulnerable to its infection. Wherever there are people today, whether local or transient, you’ll find chocolate bar wrappers, tin cans, plastic bottles and empty boxes scattered all over the ground and in highway ditches. The evidence of junk is what the junk is wrapped in. One of my life principles is not to compare myself to the lowest common denominator. Society is designed not to prevent the strong from winning, but to protect the weak from losing. In contrast, I compare what I eat to a standard of objective science and reason; a diet that coincides with evidence and what humans ate 3,000 years ago. In 1,000 BCE there was nothing to eat anywhere except whole, fresh, organic food: things like hunted wild game, fish, seafood, root vegetables, fruit and small amounts of nuts, seeds, sprouted whole grains and tubers, beans and legumes. It was after 1,000 BCE that the decline of our food supply began, and it has slowly Cont’d on page 40

developed over the centuries into a widespread disease of greed and corruption driven primarily through the device of agriculture, modern transport and high-tech food processing. Up until that time, there was no white flour or white sugar, because there was no technology or industry to produce it. There were no food factories, no feedlots, no monoculture, no pesticides, no fast food joints and none of the diseases so prevalent today, caused primarily by consuming chem-

ically enhanced sterile food and taking prescription medication to treat the symptoms of disease that arise as a consequence. The daily diet listed below is a quick overview of my standard diet year-round. This program is by far the best I have followed to date. It keeps me well, strong and ambitious. The goal is prevention of disease and prevention of unnecessary trouble. A fit, well-nourished body is best. That much I can do. My diet is a reflection of my inner life. It

is propelled mainly from the center my soul, which I keep in alliance with science, reason and positive emotion. The next and final part of this four-part series will include a threedimensional look at my 100-Days-Out contest diet. Until then, do what needs to be done.

LeafSource stops woman’s pain within days!

stops customer’s pain within days!

“It works! I’ll take another two bottles please! This coming from a customer who had tried every other natural remedy under the sun in the past few years to take away her pain. Ian, the owner of the health food store couldn’t believe his ears. He had finally found the perfect product to stop his customer’s miseries. This is what every owner of a health food store dreams about, a natural product that receives so many outstanding testimonials on such a wide variety of health issues. “I had recommended a new product called LeafSource, which we recently started carrying. We have had tremendous success with this product, and almost everyone we have recommended it to over the last few months has come back and thanked us over and over again” said Ian.

Before trying LeafSource, the woman had complained about her ongoing joint pain and was at her wit’s end. Although she had experienced some relief through the numerous natural remedies she had tried over the years, the pain would never fully go away.“She returned to my store, in tears, less than one week after buying LeafSource. I didn’t know what to make of this woman standing in front of me crying, until she told me that within a few days of taking LeafSource her pain started to disappear and within a week it was completely gone - as if it was never there.” Ian goes on, “This coming from a woman whose painful joints and ongoing sciatica were so bad just one week earlier, that the pain was unbearable but now has completely subsided.”

By now you are probably wondering what is LeafSource and why is it so effective? LeafSource is a 100% natural product derived from a proprietary organic mineral composite with over ten years of university research. LeafSource helps regulate the inflammatory process and the body’s ability to repair itself. The vast majority (70 - 80%) of the population over the age of 50 have joint problems — often called osteoarthritis. This is due to the natural (or unnatural) wear and tear on joint tissue that develops through the aging process. With joint infl ammation, movement is limited and pain can be constant. LeafSource seems to have the ability to help people get their mobility and zest for life back. Millions of people seek treatment for their joint and inflammation problems by resorting to expensive, toxic prescription drugs (i.e. NSAIDs) with multiple side effects. These range from nausea and vomiting to serious intestinal disorders (bleeding, gas, pain) and even kidney and liver failure. Isn’t that too large a price to pay for a little pain relief!? LeafSource is a safe alternative to these destructive anti-infl ammatory drugs that

Best Superfood with multiple health benefits 2010 Bes t in Canada Award

cause more problems than they solve. There are absolutely no side effects and it doesn’t interfere with any other medications. Controlled experiments and observations have revealed that LeafSource is a potent antiinflammatory that has been shown to bring a reduction to inflammation and pain within a few days. People notice great results in terms of more energy and less pain by taking anywhere from 2 to 6 capsules/day. Typical maintenance is usually 1 capsule twice daily. This product gets results! LeafSource is scientificallyvalidatedthroughmore than 10 years of research at 4 universities, including the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Mercer University. Aside from its incredible anti-infl ammatory and pain reducing ability, it has also been shown to improve the performance of your daily nutrition and vitamin programs. It helps increase the absorption of vital nutrients, which in turn helps these nutrients work better. Better absorption = better results! It’s almost as if they have become supercharged! LeafSource has also been shown to help enhance energy levels, improve intestinal health, strengthen hair, skin and nails and improve immune function. To see someone go from intense pain to a new lease on life within a week is truly incredible. Imagine being able to move freely without pain. Who wouldn’t want to get out of bed in the morning with more energy? It’s amazing how much of this stuff we take for granted, until it’s gone! Ian adds, “I often recommend

that LeafSource be taken with other natural joint products in order to help them work better and provide even faster relief. One of the things I hear most often from people who have tried LeafSource is they just plain feel better, have more energy and less pain. We’re so confi dent, we guarantee LeafSource 100%! That alone should be enough to try this incredible product.”

Simple Test

Shows How Long You Will Live By Murray McMahon

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// //////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// ////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

F

irst, there is your chronological age, and then there is your telomere age. The calendar may tell you how old you think you are, but a new, simple blood test tells you the real age of your cells – and how long you will live. In 2009, three US scientists won the Nobel Prize for Biology. They discovered a dormant enzyme in the cells which, when activated, regrows and lengthens telomeres. They called this enzyme telomerase. Telomeres are the protective ends of the DNA. There are two pairs at either end of your chromosomes and each time a cell divides, the telomeres shorten. Telomeres are the conduit for the DNA knowledge in your cells to be passed on to the new cells. However, every time the cells divide, the telomeres shorten, and less and less information is passed on to the new cells. The knowledge in the new cell is corrupted and cannot control the functions of the cell. This is aging, and those corrupted, aged cells are causing all age-related diseases: cancer, heart disease, high blood pressure, immunity problems, diabetes, failing eyesight, hormonal imbalance, plus wrinkles and grey, thinning hair.

The good news is that scientists have found a way to slow down, stop, and even reverse the shortening of telomeres. The good news is that since the discovery of the dormant enzyme telomerase, scientists have found a way to slow down, stop, and even reverse the shortening of telomeres. Not only that, telomerase can actually regrow shortened telomeres. In 2010, a Harvard researcher, Dr. Ronal De Pinho, and his team actually regressed the age of mice by giving them a telomerase activator (TA). Reported in the journal Nature, the mice went back in age from very old to young middle age. The mice not only looked and acted younger; their brains, muscles, bones and organs were larger and healthier than their brothers and sisters who received no telomerase. Dr. De Pinho concluded that it would be 10 to 15 years before a drug could be on the market.

There are many natural ways of slowing down the shortening of your telomeres. Exercise is one. Essential fatty acids are another. Free radical cleansing vitamins and herbs can also help. However, one substance stands out from the others: TA-65, a rare and purified extract of astragalus, when taken internally, lengthened short telomeres in test tube and human trials. After five years of double-blind testing for safety and efficacy, TA Sciences of NY began to distribute TA-65 through doctors, pharmacies, natural health stores and clinics. In 2011, TA Science licenced Core Natural Limited (www.corenatural.ca) as the exclusive Canadian distributor. In his newspaper column syndicated across Canada, Dr. GiffordJones mentions the 2011 study that showed TA-65 results in an increase of lymphocytes and natural killer cells which would help improve immunity in the elderly. In other studies, TA-65 improved eyesight, sexual function in aging males, blood cholesterol, bone density, fasting blood sugar, blood pressure, cognitive behaviour and verbal memory. Patients anecdotally reported improved energy and increased flexibility. Dr. Gifford-Jones does mention that TA-65 can be pricey – about $150 to $600 per month depending on age. TA 65 has been profiled on CBC, NBC, Fox, Global, and in the Globe and Mail, Elle Magazine and Popular Science. Thousands of physicians, movie stars, politicians, captains of industry and scores of regular people are daily users of TA-65. Most continue to take it because it works!

For more information on the science behind TA 65 and for purchasing information, go to www.corenatural.ca or call 289-217-3004. Murray McMahon is a veteran in the health food industry. In 1993 he founded Good Health Mart in Woodbridge Ontario, and with the help of his wife and staff has grown the chain to 15 successful stores in Ontario. Mr. McMahon’s commitment to the knowledge that vitamins, herbs, their extracts, essential food supplements and homeopathic medicines are necessary for everyday health led him to the discovery of telomere science and TA Sciences, the manufacturer of TA-65. His goal is to help eradicate illness naturally, and he is convinced that TA65 is the next progression in the natural health field.

Anti-Aging Breakthrough!

Read Dr. Gifford-Jones’ Toronto Sun enlightening article and Chapter 10 in Suzanne Somers’ new ground-breaking anti-aging book, Bombshell! at www.corenatural.ca

Nobel Prize-winning technology targets “telomeres” to help prevent DNA damage and rejuvenate aging immune systems! Despite its high cost of $7 to $20/day, Canadians are buying TA 65 from health food stores, clinics and doctors • Restore your aging immune system • Increase your bone density: new study shows 3.7% increase • Improve your various biomarkers that usually decline with age (especially after age 40), such as eyesight, lung capacity, skin elasticity, sleep disorders, sexual problems, depression, osteoporosis, etc. “...after 9 months of taking TA-65, I’m very pleased... Not one bad day and incredible feeling of well being. …Darker and thicker hair, smoother and younger looking skin. I just feel younger and more energetic. I’m passing for 55 or below.” Bob W. 69, Seattle Washington

Telomeres

How it Works Telomeres are DNA strands at the end of chromosomes that shorten with age. Once they are too short, the cell stops functioning or dies. Scientific studies show that short telomeres are associated with age-related decline and dysfunction. Now you can lengthen telomeres with an enzyme called “telomerase.” Telomerase is a dormant enzyme found in the somatic cells. TA 65 activates the telomerase enzyme, which in turn lengthens short telomeres.

TA-65: The world’s ONLY proven telomerase activator!

Other so-called Telomerase Activators only make promises! Ask for their studies and human trials that prove their claims. You’ll find a lot of hype, and double talk and even references to TA-65 studies without any proof for their product. Only TA-65 has double blind studies and human trials. Look them up on www.corenatural.ca. TA-65 is truly the GOLD STANDARD in anti-aging supplements.

Grow Young with HGH From the landmark book Grow Young with HGH comes the most powerful, over-thecounter health supplement in the history of man. Human growth hormone was first discovered in 1920 and has long been thought by the medical community to be necessary only to stimulate the body to full adult size and therefore unnecessary past the age of 20. Recent studies, however, have overturned this notion completely, discovering instead that the natural decline of Human Growth Hormone (HGH), from ages 21 to 61 (the average age at which there is only a trace left in the body) and is the reason why the body ages and fails to regenerate itself to its 25 year-old biological age.

in the blood at the same levels HGH existed in the blood when we were 25 years old.

There is a receptor site in almost every cell in the human body for HGH, so its regenerative and healing effects are very comprehensive. Growth Hormone first synthesized in 1985 under the Reagan Orphan drug act, to treat dwarfism, was quickly recognized to stop aging in its tracks and reverse it to a remarkable degree. Since then, only the lucky and the rich have had access to it at the cost of $10,000 US per year.

The next big breakthrough was to come in 1997 when a group of doctors and scientists, developed an all-natural source product which would cause your own natural HGH to be released again and do all the remarkable things it did for you in your 20’s. Now available to every adult for about the Modern medical science now regards aging as price of a coffee and donut a day. a disease that is treatable and preventable and that “aging”, the disease, is GHR is available now, just actually a compilation of various in time for the aging Baby diseases and pathologies, like a rise Boomers and everyone else in blood glucose and pressure to from age 30 to 90 who diabetes, skin wrinkling and so on. doesn’t want to age but All of these aging symptoms can be would rather stay young, stopped and rolled back by beautiful and healthy all of maintaining Growth Hormone levels the time. The new HGH releasers are winning converts from the synthetic HGH users as well, since GHR is just as effective (for anti-aging) is oral instead of self-injectable and is very affordable.

GHR is a natural releaser, has no known side effects, unlike the synthetic version and has no known drug interactions. Progressive doctors admit that this is the direction medicine is going, to get the body to heal itself instead of employing drugs. GHR is truly a revolutionary paradigm shift in medicine and, like any modern leapfrog advance, many others will be left in the dust holding their limited, or useless drugs and remedies. It is now thought that HGH is so comprehensive in its healing and regenerative powers that it is today, where the computer industry was twenty years ago, that it will displace so many prescription and non-prescription drugs and health remedies that it is staggering to think of. The president of BIE Health Products, stated in a recent interview,“I’ve been waiting for these products since the 70’s”. We knew they would come, if only we could stay healthy and live long enough to see them! If you want to stay on top of your game, physically and mentally as you age, this product is a boon, especially for the highly skilled professionals who have made large investments in their education, and experience. Also with the state of the health care system in Canada which appears to be going into serious decline, it’s more important than ever to take pro-active steps to safeguard your health. Continued use of GHR will make a radical difference in your health. HGH is particularly helpful to the elderly who, given a choice, would rather stay independent in their own home, strong, healthy and alert enough to manage their own affairs, exercise and stay involved in their communities. Frank, age 85, walks two miles a day, plays golf, belongs to a dance club for seniors, had a girl friend again and doesn’t need Viagara, passed his drivers test and is hardly ever home when we call - GHR delivers. HGH is known to relieve symptoms of Asthma, Angina, Chronic Fatigue, Constipation, Lower back pain and Sciatica, Cataracts and Macular Degeneration, Menopause, Fibromyalgia, Regular and Diabetic Neuropathy, Hepatitis, helps Kidney Dialysis and Heart and Stroke recovery.
