s I sit here in my office writing this piece for our January issue, I am overcome by a multitude of emotions. Today is the one-year anniversary of my father’s passing and this makes me feel a great emptiness and sadness. It is hard to believe that someone who has been there for every day of your life is now somehow not available to talk with or share time with. Today is also the first snowy day here in Vancouver and our little angel has been having the time of her life building a snowman and frolicking with her friends. This makes me very happy and appreciative. Press time with the magazine is always a bit hectic, and when you throw in the pressures of the holiday season, these things make me feel stress and anxiety. As we prepare for the coming year and plan for the time ahead, we feel hopeful and optimistic. It is this wide range of feelings and the ability to grow from our experiences that make life so joyous, painful, precious and rewarding. It is remarkable how aging brings with it a greater understanding of the big picture and a calmness to clearly see the things that really matter in our lives. We have the ability to assess the paths our lives have previously taken and the good fortune to have the ability to change our actions at any time and alter the way things will be for us in the future. Our health is very much the same as our emotions. If we take actions to improve our situation, be it mental or physical, chances are we will affect change in our lives and the lives of those around us. If we use our time wisely and make an effort to better ourselves with every opportunity presented to us, we will grow as people and we will touch others with our efforts. In this issue, our content is as eclectic as ever. Our cover story is about Tommy Europe, an accomplished Canadian actor, author and former professional athlete who has dedicated his life to making us feel stronger and better. For those of you suffering from respiratory or bronchial issues, there are some newly approved natural products on the market that may provide you with some relief from your symptoms. We stress the importance of organic foods and products and we delve into numerology. Our regular sports nutrition expert, Cory Holly, introduces us to neuroplasticity, the science of living well. Living well is one science we all should become experts in. On behalf of all of us at VISTA, we wish you all the best in health and prosperity for the coming year!

Changing your mind The ancients pointed to higher awareness using many names – enlightenment, moksha, bodhi, kensho, satori, kevala jnana are but a few. In our modern world, we live so deeply in a limited mindset and it is the source of so many people not being happy, healthy and living a life of ease. In this limited mindset we are consumed with irritation, worry, aggression, and fear – these are habitual unhelpful patterns of conditioned reactivity. Stress is the name we use for the condition that envelops all the symptoms of the limited mindset. Stress is energy draining and takes us away from our true inspired selves. On some level we know that our natural state is one without stress, where we can endure the rapid pace of life without difficulty, where we
experience joy and where our mind is clear. But most of us have lost the understanding and appreciation of the true holistic way and we live detached from nature and this greater way of being. For thousands of years, mushrooms have been used to bring a change in perspective and a change in awareness, and have brought people closer to an understanding of their authentic selves. In this state, we know what is true and real, and happiness, wellness and ease become our norm. Changing the way your mind works is the first step to recovering your true personal power and ease. We call this Changing Your Mind. We invite you to take a small step in the direction of finding the greater you. GUEST EDITOR’S DESK So, the natural health industry is under attack again. This time, it comes through the Annals of Internal Medicine, an academic medical journal published by the American College of Physicians. In its most recent issue, the publication ran an editorial titled, “Enough is enough: Stop Wasting Money on Vitamin and Mineral Supplements.” The editorial was based on studies the publication ran in the same issue, which were the result of original research. One of the statements from the story said, “We believe that the case is closed – supplementing the diet of well-nourished adults with (most) mineral or vitamin supplements has no clear benefit and might even be harmful. These vitamins should not be used for chronic disease prevention. Enough is enough.” CBS News reported one of the editorial’s co-authors, Dr. Edgar Miller of John Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in Baltimore, Maryland, said that instead of expecting multivitamins to make you healthier, people should focus on eating a healthier diet and exercising. The doctor makes a good point. However, he misses the fact that multis – in fact all supplements – add some of the vitamins and minerals your food cannot deliver to your body. There are very few people who eat the right foods in the correct amounts to deliver the perfect levels of vitamins and minerals the body needs. Even working within the natural health industry as I do, I can count on one hand the number of people who live this ideal lifestyle, with the perfectly balanced diet. So, supplements help bring what the food doesn’t. Over the years, people have searched for the legendary “magic bullet:” the one pill that will make you healthy, full of energy and fit and trim without any effort from you. Imagine…eat fast food three meals each day, drink soft drinks and alcohol by the gallon, watch TV from the couch
24/7, smoke like a volcano and then…take the magic pill. That’s all you need. Sadly, the pill doesn’t exist, and never will. The three keys are still a good diet, exercise and supplementation. But you need all three. You have to ask yourself: do I feel better when I’m taking my supplements? If you miss a day or two, do you feel worse? More tired? Run down? Even guilty? According to the Canadian Health Food Association, seven in 10 Canadians take supplements on a regular basis. That means close to 24 million of your fellow citizens think taking vitamins is helping them maintain a higher quality of health. In the end, it comes down to what you think and feel. I know loading up on vitamin C, echinacea and zinc has warded off many a cold for me. Supplementation works for me. A few years ago, when I was still playing rec hockey, I turned up at the rink one Sunday morning fighting a cold. I went out and played, and sitting in the dressing room after, the boys started the comments: “Oh, Mr. Health Food has a cold,” and “I guess those health products don’t work after all.” I noticed the comments were coming from two guys who had missed the previous two weeks of hockey…because they were home in bed with colds. “The difference between you getting a cold and me getting a cold,” I said, “is that I still come out and play a strong game. Where were you two the past two weeks?” With their heads hung in shame, the comments stopped forever. The science supporting supplementation is there. The history is there: our products have been used by every culture and race around the world, some for thousands of years. The success stories are there. You have to decide for yourself if supplementation is for you. Bruce W. Cole, Guest Editor

he raw food movement in North America can be traced back to the publication of Viktoras Kulinskas’s book Survival Into the 21st Century in 1975. Viktoras had long lived the vegan lifestyle and his diet was primarily sourced from fresh, whole, raw foods. His credibility lay in the fact that he was the co-founder of a very successful healing centre, The Hippocrates Health Institute in Boston, established in 1961. The healing approach that he advocated was based on the consumption of raw, “life giving” foods. In writing this book, Mr. Kulinaska brought his vegan and raw lifestyle to the masses, promising vitality and endless health. Ultimately the raw food movement began. Enter the 21st century; the raw food movement is exploding. Mr. Kulinska’s recommendations resonate for many individuals because following this dietary way of life has provided the key to health and vitality. This does not appear to be just a fly-by-night fad as an increasing number of athletes are choosing the “80/10/10” diet, a regimen comprised predominantly of carbohydrates and nutrients obtained from fresh, uncooked fruits and vegetables, with smaller amounts of fat and protein. Raw foods are delicious and they are abundant in enzymes, vitamins, minerals and fibre. The food choices are plentiful as the diet is also rich in seeds, grains and beans that are often sprouted to render
them more digestible. Sprouting also significantly increases the nutrient value and can double and triple the levels of enzymes, protein, fibre and probiotics while eliminating the anti-nutrients found in these raw foods. Another trend that is gaining ground is choosing organically grown foods over conventionally produced foods. Global farming practices have changed drastically since 1975 and concerns have begun to focus more on the condition of our soil and the quality of our food. Giant agribusinesses are the norm. As they incorporate questionable farming practices such as aggressive planting schedules, chemical fertilization practices, the extreme use of pesticides and, of course, the introduction of genetically modified crops, the quality and nutrient levels have been compromised. Over the past ten years, the demand for organically grown food has risen exponentially. What was once an option available only to the elite is now readily available at your local grocer. Many independent retailers dedicate their entire store to the sale of organics. This has encouraged more farmers to “go organic” and, in doing so, has brought the cost down to an affordable level for almost everyone in the community. Certified Organic designations abide by stringent rules and regu-
lations determined in Canada by federal legislation - http://laws-lois. justice.gc.ca/eng/regulations/SOR-2009-176/index.html. The Canadian Organic Standard is the only certification system to receive the broad approval of both the EU and USA and is recognized as their equivalent. • Organic farming production does not allow the use of synthetic pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, genetically modified organisms, ionizing radiation or the use of growth hormones for animals that produce meat, poultry, eggs and dairy products. • Organic farming is sustainable farming. It is designed to protect the soil and land while allowing for the production of food that contains the highest nutrient levels. One of the repercussions of mainstream farming practices is the profound depletion of the soil’s vital nutrients due to the overuse of the land as well as the aggressive utilization of chemical pesticides and fertilizers. Innovative technologies are allowing food manufacturers the ability to use organic, whole food ingredients to create convenient, easyto-use packaged food products, while still maintaining the quality and the nutritional value. One example is the proliferation of whole food
concentrates in various forms. We have seen the popularity of whole food green supplement powders, and now the latest revolution is in the creation of raw, organic, whole food concentrates that are still enzymatically active and nutrient dense, in part due to low temperature processing. This next generation of nutritional food powders includes a variety of sprouted seeds (such as chia and flax) as well as superfood concentrates from a variety of dried, whole fruits and vegetables. Due to scientific advancements in food processing technology, methods such as cold-processing, fermentation, sprouting, DHA & EPA ingraining and freeze-drying are being employed to improve the nutritional value and sensory appeal of processed foods. The increased levels of naturally occurring vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and probiotics that raw, whole foods provide can be found in powdered formats that are easily added to many other dishes that can be prepared at home or in restaurants. As you sprinkle one of these nutritional powders over your next plate of indulgence, take pleasure in knowing that you can have your cake and nutrition too! Your local health food retailer has a growing selection of these potent whole food formulas.

CLEANSE & RECLEANSE HOW TO REDUCE YOUR TOXIC LOAD By Lucretia Schanfarber
T
oxins come in many forms and from many sources. They’re everywhere. It’s hard to avoid them. They’re in our food, water, soil and air. Toxins are in our pharmaceutical drugs, our bottled drinking water, our children’s school playgrounds and our shiny new cars. From the PVC-laden “rubber ducky” floating in the bathtub to the mercury-laced tuna noodle casserole on the dinner table, invisible toxins have infiltrated our homes and all aspects of our daily lives. Toxins have become such a common part of modern life that – most of the time – we aren’t even aware of being exposed to them. Fortunately, we can take steps to help reduce the toxic load we’re all undoubtedly carrying within our bodies.
VISTA MAGAZINE ISSUE 92
Toxic Overload Creates Serious Health Problems
12
Simply put, toxins are poisons. We would never think of drinking a cup of coffee laced with rat poison. Yet, every day we eat, drink, breathe and touch the cumulative toxic equivalent of some of the most poisonous chemicals. Scientific evidence indicates that this total load of toxic exposure reduces our body’s natural ability to detoxify and eliminate toxins. This leads to toxic overload – a steady build-up of accumulated toxins and complex chemical mixtures we are not adequately eliminating. A collaborative study conducted by researchers from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, The Environmental Working Group of Oakland, California and Commonweal Environmental Health and Research Institute in Marin County, California revealed shocking results. Each person was tested for 210 chemicals commonly found in consumer products and industrial pollution. On average, the test results showed each person tested positive for 50 or more chemicals linked to cancer in humans and lab animals, considered toxic to the brain and nervous system or known to interfere with our hormone and reproductive systems. The range of serious health problems linked by scientific research to toxic chemical compounds includes cancer, neurological disorders, hormone and endocrine disorders, birth defects and abnormal development, reproductive problems and immune system disorders. Other possible effects of toxic load on human health are poor memory and concentration, connective tissue and joint disorders, chronic fatigue, allergies, obesity, depression, skin disorders, metabolic disorders and liver malfunction.
Minimize Exposure to Everyday Toxins
To decrease the body’s burden of toxins, we must first reduce exposure. With more than 100,000 chemicals in common use in North America, it is a constant challenge to limit our exposure to these harmful substances in their many forms. The first step to minimizing exposure is to raise your toxin awareness level by learning to identify the hidden sources of toxins in food, common household products and our environment. Read labels closely before buying any consumer goods and, when in doubt, err on the side of caution. It is advisable to choose food sources that are locally and organically grown whenever possible. This will help to greatly reduce exposure to toxic pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides. Purchasing unsprayed, naturally fertilized fruits and vegetables supports sustainable and nontoxic agricultural practices. Don’t overlook the obvious. Sometimes eliminating common sources of toxins in and around the home can be as simple as taking off your street shoes when you enter your home: this is what is recommended by the world-renowned Suzuki Foundation, a Vancouverbased environmental health organization. According to the Foundation, pesticides and herbicides are commonly tracked into the house on the soles of our shoes.
Cleanse and ReCleanse
Most cultures and religions around the world have practised cleansing, fasting and detoxification rituals for centuries. In almost all cultures and traditions, common aspects of cleansing practices include the elimination or restriction of certain foods and drinks for a designated period of time; the overall reduction of caloric intake; the inclusion of cleansing, healing and sacred foods, plants, and herbs; regular seasons or times for cleansing; contemplative, religious or spiritual observance; and a desire and need to heal and restore body, mind and spirit. In today’s busy world, many people – especially first-time cleansers –benefit greatly from using a seven day herbal detox kit that is simple to use, gentle on the body and includes a healthy-eating meal plan designed to maximize the natural toxin-eliminating properties of unrefined, whole foods. The concept and practice of regular internal cleansing is not new, but it has become more essential than ever for reducing the body’s toxic load and for getting back to the basics of healthy living and eating. Lucretia Schanfarber is a health writer and editor living on Quadra Island, BC.

20 Daily Cleansing Tips
14
How you live every day makes the most difference to your accumulated toxic load. Here are 20 simple steps you can take to begin reducing your physical and mental toxic load today: 1. Eat less - eating too much food (even foods that are good for us) overloads our digestive system and places an unnecessary burden on all other systems of our body. 2. Eat high fibre foods – fibre from cooked, soaked or ground flax seeds and from fresh fruits and vegetables is best. 3. Shop only for foods that contribute to better health – choose low calorie foods that are packed with nutrients (“nutrient-dense”). 4. Practice a positive mental attitude – give yourself credit for every step you take along the road to better health. 5. Become more aware of all of the ingredients in everything you eat. 6. Reduce your intake of refined foods and begin to eat simpler, unpackaged, unrefined whole foods. Choose fresh fruits instead of processed and sugary foods when you crave sweets. 7. Drink 10 - 8oz / 250ml glasses of water. Run your tap water through a filter that removes the greatest number of toxins and heavy metals; boil filtered water for five minutes to destroy toxic bacteria. Water supports every aspect of the detoxification process and dilutes water-soluble toxins. Drinking a glass of water every waking hour helps to continuously transport toxins out of the body. It is ideal to filter and boil tap water for drinking on a daily basis. Cool to room temperature before drinking.
8. Eat more raw fruits and vegetables. 9. Steam, poach, bake or broil your cooked foods. 10. Use iron, glass, stainless steel or porcelain for cooking. 11. Chew food completely (minimum 25 times per bite). 12. Avoid all artificial colours, flavours, preservatives and sweeteners. 13. Eat low on the food chain; the closer a food is to its natural state, the less toxin risk. 14. Eat local, organically grown food whenever possible; select organic food products including produce, meat, dairy, nuts and seeds, whole grains and oils. 15. Select body care products wisely; avoid petroleum-based cosmetics; make your own body care products from natural ingredients – if you wouldn’t eat it, don’t put it on your skin or hair. 16. Stop using chemical-based household cleaners, laundry products and air fresheners; buy toxin-free, biodegradable products or make your own cleaners with baking soda, white vinegar, citrus oils and other natural ingredients. 17. Use unbleached (dioxin-free) paper products. 18. Use feminine hygiene products made from unbleached cotton. 19. Reduce the amount of time you spend in polluted environments and in traffic. 20. Fill your home and work environments with houseplants that absorb toxic gases from the air; spider plants, Boston ferns, English ivy and dracaena are easy to grow and provide natural air pollution control.

2014:
AN INTROSPECTIVE YEAR By Elizabeth Summers, Esoteric Numerologist
The number seven is a code for the intellect, inventiveness and research. Expect advances in technology to surge in 2014 as science, technology and research will become optimum. New appliances, medicines, gadgets and widgets will come to the fore, boggling the mind for sure. A need to uncover hidden answers will become a joy to many: cold-case answers will be discovered by detectives and fossil forms with hidden treasures will be unearthed by archaeologists and anthropologists. Secrets in relationships that have never before been revealed may become unmasked. A sense of the past becomes a curiosity to number seven energies. People will want to enjoy ‘the good ole days’ when there was not as much fear and all were ‘happy days.’ Businesses that focus on nostalgia - antiques, recipes from our childhood and retro fashion - may show themselves yet again over 2014. Discernment will be a key word in 2014, physically, financially and governmentally. More will be revealed as to the ethics (or lack thereof) of our elected officials, and a “push” to remove them will resound in the ethers. There will be a sense of retreat and re-evaluation in people’s lives throughout 2014. It will become blatantly obvious that the truth has not been provided by those who have been trusted, and the populace will begin to understand that they should no longer give their power away to others. The year of 2014 is about “personal regrouping.” As Shakespeare wrote, “To thine own self be true.” The introspective year of 2014 is about finding one’s own truth, not the other guy’s, in order to be happy, content, and in one’s own power in life. To move forward in one’s personal life in 2014, we must come from our hearts, not our heads and egos. Number seven is about trust and acceptance. Stay with heart-based approaches. Trust that heart-based choices will guide you where you are to go and be, doing what you need to do in any moment. Know that your soul will take as long as it needs in order to move you forward in blessings and that when you surrender (which is different than giving up), what comes into your life next will be better and for your highest good and your greatest joy. When we choose fear, whether in our career, relationships or finances, physical ailments may arise. When we choose faith and trust in a Universe that can keep the stars in the sky, surrender to the Divine and let go of control, all will be well, slowly but surely.
Esoteric Numerologist Elizabeth Summers is adept at combining Numerology, an ancient system of codes based on the Western Pythagorean System, with astrology and the Chaldean/Quabala interpretations of the Tarot to decode an individual’s temperament and personality, their attitude towards life, emotional reactions, best career choice, deepest desires, and the general issues they are meant to deal with in this life. S
everal prominent themes will move through the filaments of life in 2014. To find the predominant theme for 2014 year, we add 2+0+1+4=7. The number seven can be a bit difficult to grapple with, as it is like holding a cloud in one’s hands. Certain buzz words need to be kept in mind as we travel through this rather unusual energy of 2014. Choice, discernment, silence, spirituality and ethics will show themselves as guideposts to be aware of and put into practice. From a human perspective, the number seven influence branches out in many directions, ranging from a focus on mental health to the environment and spirituality. This energy ruled by Pisces can bring a strong interest in the occult and the metaphysical. However, it can also attract skeptics who doubt all that is not pragmatic and self-evident. Spiritual practices will become more mainstream. People will become more discerning in choosing between those preachers and teachers that are not for their highest good and greatest joy. Listening to and trusting one’s hunches will become more imperative in decision-making. The number seven is an inner vibration prompting one to silence, philosophical contemplation and analytical thinking, all in a space of reflection, rest, and solitude. The pressures of everyday life will bring forth a desire to get away from it all, and the best place for that will be nature. National parks will become even more popular as Mother Earth’s energy becomes a healing balm in people’s lives. The environmental protection of trees and water will become a more popular issue as people become reacquainted with the calming aspects of nature. This will lead to an increase in businesses like camping gear, mobile homes, nature tours, and river rafting that bring us back to a simpler lifestyle within a natural habitat. This contemplative and private vibration will cause many to withdraw and spend time in solitary activities often brought on by electronics, thus causing relationships to suffer. One might notice the divorce rate increasing in a number seven year as couples find they do not have much in common and withdraw emotionally and sexually, as a consequence. A desire to be alone, not necessarily lonely, can become intense, thus moving the couple apart. Writing of all kinds will increase, including personal journaling. Because people will not be verbalizing many of their thoughts, journaling will become a more popular form of self-expression. Expect further development in the understanding of mental health issues. Depression caused by economic fears may become more of a public issue to be dealt with. Movement away from chemicals to more holistic approaches for medical treatments may become more popular and written about. More emphasis will be given to organic foods, as the number seven has a strong instinct for purity of health through foods. This enthusiasm is similar to a Virgo health fetish.

Since then, I’ve been helping thousands of people become pain-free by teaching them how pain comes from tension—not a failing body. Almost every one of those people was told by their physicians that they needed immediate disc surgery, or steroid injections, or therapy, or rest, or this and that—but not one of them did. They all healed with new knowledge. But they had to accept the fact that their bodies were OK, and resume all normal physical activity, without fear. The truth set them free—and it began with understanding certain basic things Get a Physical Exam Make sure there is no pathological process occurring—take responsibility for your health. Take Your Physical Exam Results with a Grain of Salt If your exam shows only herniated discs, arthritis as seen on the x-ray, spurs, a crooked spine, spinal narrowing (stenosis), or any other normal change, be of great cheer! These things do not cause back pain. No matter how much doctors confuse people in this area, experience has shown that these things are simply there—most people have these anatomical changes, with or without pain. Pain comes from oxygen loss. Whether the pain is in the limbs or spine or any other area, it rarely ever comes from the body’s structure. It’s almost always the effect of tension, or TMS: Tension Myoneural Syndrome. Reject the Multi-Disciplinary Approach This approach basically says, “We don’t have a clue what to do for your pain, so let’s try everything, and hope one works.” This includes acupuncture, spinal manipulations, surgery, injections, core strengthening, losing weight, etc. These are almost always placebo-treatments, and can paradoxically keep you in pain. If they worked for a sufferer, it’s because that person believed it worked. But the relief never lasts and the approach normally must be continued in perpetuity because the pain is not coming from a “failing spine.” The multi-approach is a major reason for ongoing pain epidemics. Never manage pain—eliminate it! Beware of Faulty Diagnoses Herniated discs do not cause back pain. That myth was exposed decades ago with the seminal work of pioneering pain-physician John E. Sarno, MD, who coined the acronym TMS. Spinal surgeons are just now beginning to realize
that Sarno was correct. You cannot pinch a nerve or paralysis will quickly follow, and the pain will stop. A dead nerve cannot transmit pain signals. You cannot “throw your back out.” Spinal discs are firmly attached on both sides of the spine; they cannot slip in-and-out of place. You don’t have to strengthen your body’s core to heal, and scoliosis does not cause pain. The proof is in the fact that almost everyone heals if they can get past these archaic myths. The body’s structure can be injured, and that will indeed cause pain. But the body heals quickly afterward. Pain does not become chronic without an emotional and/or conditioned-response process driving it. 5. Understand the Reason for Your Pain Almost all pain is a diversion by the brain to rivet the sufferer’s attention to his body. It arises from a hidden emotional process, mainly anger, fear, sorrow, and frustration. When these powerful emotions hit a certain threshold, the brain will reduce oxygen flow to a body-area to create a diversion—as a favour—to avoid having to sense emotional pain. The pain is never imagined or faked; it is very real, and extremely painful. 6. Look at What’s Going on in Your Life Almost everyone I’ve helped to heal was able to trace their pain back to an event or a life-plateau. Is your marriage in trouble? Does your job stress you out? Did a loved one die or is someone sick? Did you recently retire? Do you have the Type-T “pain personality” of perfectionism; trying to please everyone? Do you show little emotion? Did you feel abandoned as a child? Are you hyper-responsible, or a worrier? Did you just hit a milestone age? Connect the dots to your pain, and heal.
The knowledge of what is occurring—at the unconscious level— has tremendous healing power because once the lid is blown off of the brain’s strategy, the pain has no more value as a diversion. 7. Try to Understand Why You Need to Believe You Have a Bad Back If I tell someone there is a method to heal their pain forever, they more often say, “No!... my pain is real!!” Well, the pain is always real. The more important question is, when someone is told they can heal, why isn’t their first question about how to do it? Why would someone fight to remain in pain? This is critical in understanding pain’s purpose. The most common reason for pain is to bury emotions that are too powerful, or too dangerous. The brain creates the horrible sensation of pain to firmly “convince the sufferer” that she has a structural problem in order to divert her attention from her anxiety. So, of course she wants to believe she has a structural problem. That’s her brain’s intent! Some sufferers react with extreme rage, and sometimes violence, at the notion that their pain is actually a mind/body effect. They often spit, throw things, or stomp out of the room knocking things over in rage. They only hear, “Your pain is all in your head.” But this is never true; no one is saying that. The pain is very real. But it comes from something called TMS, not from all the things that most doctors are currently telling their patients. The reason people react in a hostile manner is due to the very reason they have the pain in the first place, to avoid facing something. By rejecting the truth, that their symptoms are created by internal forces, they fall right into their brain’s ingenious strategy of deceit, and their suffering continues. Modern science, in its futile efforts to outsmart Mother Nature, is the leading cause of continuing pain epidemics, from fibromyalgia to chronic fatigue. The truth of healing is up against a multitrillion dollar juggernaut called the “medical industry” that is hellbent on continually treating pain, not healing it. The message of “how to heal” gets blocked at every turn by people inside the industry that profit from treating the body; and by publications that depend on advertisement dollars from the industry. Thus, pain epidemics are on the rise—despite possessing the most advanced medical techniques in the history of humankind. Anyone can heal, if they can put aside all the archaic notions of pain, and begin again, with a deeper understanding. But—do sufferers want to heal... or just treat their body? The two are almost always conflicting goals.

or more than three decades, a safe, low-cost compound has provided millions of people relief from the coughing, wheezing, and thick phlegm associated with cold and flu. Of course, pharmaceutical companies long ago co-opted it for profit by incorporating it into various patented drugs. The sad consequence is that most aging individuals have never heard of it. Even many doctors remain unaware of its potential role as a front-line defense against some of today’s most deadly public health threats, including: • Acetaminophen toxicity and acute liver failure: the number one cause of acute liver failure in the United States. • Influenza: whose victims are primarily aging individuals, three quarters of all flu-related deaths occur in the elderly. • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease: COPD, the fourthleading cause of death in the United States (includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis).
• Helicobacter pylori: the bacterial culprit behind stomach ulcers, and a lethal pathogen closely linked to malignant gastric cancer, the second most frequent cause of cancer death worldwide. In Canada, Health Canada has approved NAC-1000 for the following: • NAC-1000 helps to relieve symptoms of chronic bronchitis (COPD). • It is a supportive therapy in the treatment of inflammation of the respiratory system. • It reduces the severity and frequency of influenza-like symptoms. • NAC-1000 delivers antioxidants for the maintenance of good health in individuals under oxidative stress. NAC (N-Acetyl Cysteine) is an analogue of the dietary amino acid cysteine. It is known for its mucolytic (mucus breaking) and antiinflammatory effects. NAC acts as a potent antioxidant (free radical

quencher). NAC is a thiol compound, thereby providing sulfhydryl groups that act as direct free radical scavengers and also stimulate the production of the endogenous (internal) antioxidant glutathione NAC is a potent antioxidant that maintains vitamins C and E in their antioxidant state, and it also acts as a scavenging antioxidant that removes reactive oxygen species once they are formed. It is a critical Phase 2 detoxification factor. Essentially, it acts to conjugate fatsoluble toxins (i.e. heavy metals), thereby converting them to neutral water-soluble compounds that can easily be excreted out of the body. GSH supplementation, however, is not a viable option as it has negligent systemic availability in man (1). Oral administration of GSH alone does not adequately restore GSH levels. It is rapidly hydrolyzed by the liver and intestines (2) and penetration through the blood–brain barrier is poor. Similarly, oral administration of L-cysteine has also been shown to have little effect on brain GSH levels owing to first-pass metabolism (3, 4). Oral NAC administration results in increased plasma cysteine levels, ultimately leading to increases in plasma GSH.4.

Glutathione has been suggested as an important anti-cancer and antiaging nutrient. However, to experience the significant benefits, the only proven way to increase intercellular glutathione is with NAC supplementation. The characteristic antioxidant properties of NAC help to stabilize the cellular redox status, thereby regulating cellular apoptosis, angiogenesis, cell growth and inflammatory response. Both in vivo and in vitro studies confirm the strong antioxidant properties of NAC. Interestingly, it reduces oxidative stress (free radicals in the body) at both high and low concentrations, and in both acute and chronic conditions. The unique antioxidant properties of NAC may explain its strong capacity to attenuate the adverse effects caused by toxic chemicals and drug reactions. The anti-inflammatory properties of this compound are experienced even at low dosages, with effects being dosedependent. Greater dosages appear to improve bioavailability to exert greater therapeutic potentials (6). NAC is recognized as an effective antidote for acetaminophen and carbon monoxide poisoning. Research demonstrates that NAC has other therapeutic potential: NAC was found to prevent ethanolinduced hypertension and adverse renal vascular changes in rats via its ability to bind blood acetaldehyde (7). NAC is also being considered as a treatment alternative to help with inflammatory conditions associated with cystic fibrosis. In a group of 18 cystic fibrosis (CF) patients with neutrophil airway inflammation (a pulmonary disorder), markers for CF pulmonary function were significantly improved as reflected by decreased sputum elastase activity, and decreased airway neutrophils. The authors stated that high dose oral NAC has the potential to correct antioxidant and inflammatory imbalances associated with CF thereby improving pulmonary health (8). NAC has also demonstrated hepatoprotective effects independent of its effects on elevating the antioxidant glutathione (9). Studies have shown both oral and intravenous administration of NAC significantly improves the management of unstable angina. A prior study conducted in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (1997) reported that NAC combined with transdermal nitroglycerin was associated with only 13 per cent of outcome events (i.e. death, myocardial infarction, and refractory angina) versus 39 per
cent and 31 per cent in placebo and nitroglycerin groups, respectively. The authors concluded that NAC potentiates the therapeutic effects of nitroglycerin (10). When the plasma glutathione concentration is low, such as in patients with HIV infection, alcoholics and patients with cirrhosis, increasing the availability of circulating glutathione by oral administration might be of therapeutic benefit. To assess the feasibility of supplementing oral glutathione, we have determined the systemic availability of glutathione in seven healthy volunteers. The basal concentrations of glutathione, cysteine and glutamate in plasma were 6.2, 8.3, and 54 mumol.l-1 respectively. During the 270 min after the administration of glutathione in a dose of 0.15 mmol.kg-1, the concentrations of glutathione, cysteine, and glutamate in plasma did not increase significantly, suggesting that the systemic availability of glutathione is negligible in man. Because of hydrolysis of glutathione by intestinal and hepatic gamma-glutamyltransferase, dietary glutathione is not a major determinant of circulating glutathione, and it is not possible to increase circulating glutathione to a clinically beneficial extent by the oral administration of a single dose of 3 g of glutathione. An open, randomized, controlled study published in Respiration (1999) using 169 patients, reported that six month standard therapy of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) with NAC (600mg/ day) showed a 41 per cent reduction of exacerbations. The number of sick days was substantially less (82) in the NAC group verses the standard therapy group alone (155). There were no reported adverse events with the supplemental intake of NAC. The authors concluded that NAC is well tolerated and improves the management of both moderate to severe COPD.11 NAC may also benefit many other health conditions including the following: bronchopulmonary disorders, bronchitis, epilepsy, hyperhomocysteinemia, end stage renal disease, influenza, cocaine addiction, obsessive–compulsive disorder, trichotillomania and grooming disorders, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
Effective Dosage Protocols:
The therapeutic dosage of NAC varies according to the condition being treated. For instance, for COPD, a supplemental dose of 600 mg daily while for reducing plasma homocysteine levels, 1.2 grams daily have been used. Unfortunately, many products in the commercial market typically contain very low levels of NAC. For this reason, Vitex Nutrition has developed a formula containing 1000 mg of pharmaceutical grade NAC per caplet for improved therapeutic potentials. Consult with your natural health practitioner to determine the most effective dose to manage your particular health condition. Otherwise a daily dose of 1-2 caplets (1000 – 2000 mg) is a general recommendation.
Adverse Reactions:
Generally, NAC is well tolerated with occasional mild gastrointestinal upset reported at very high dosages.
Drug Interactions:
Taking NAC with intravenous nitroglycerin may cause severe hypotension and intolerable headaches. Check with health a care professional prior to supplemental intake.

3 NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS THAT WILL ENRICH YOUR RETIREMENT By Andrew McNair
It’s a valid concern: One of every four people turning 65 today can expect to live past their 90th birthday, and one in 10 will live past 95, according to the Social Security Administration. For a married couple, there’s a 58 percent chance that one of them will live to 90. With 10,000 boomers turning 65 every day, it’s something on the minds of more than a fourth of Americans. “I went into this business because I hated seeing people who’d followed the rules – saved money in a 401k, put their kids through college, gave to charity – get to retirement and find they didn’t have enough to sustain them for more than a few years,” says Andrew McNair, founder and CEO of SWAN Capital, (SWAN-Capital.com), and author of “Don’t be Penny Wise & Dollar Foolish.” “It’s not enough to have a certain amount of money in your portfolio, you want to have a guaranteed check coming in in addition to your investments.” Whether you’re years from retirement or planning for it now, McNair says these three New Year’s resolutions will be the best you ever made: • Resolve to plan for expenses in retirement to equal or exceed your expenses today. Many people assume their expenses will decline once they retire – they forget that they’re going to have a lot more free time to do what they love, McNair says. “What are your dreams? Will you want to travel? Take up a new hobby? Meet friends for golf two or three times a week? Those likely are going to be expenses you don’t have now,” he says. Also, once you retire, things don’t magically last forever. The rug in the dining room, the fridge in the kitchen – eventually they’ll need to be replaced or repaired. Also, as you age, medical expenses either appear or increase. Sit down and think about what your ideal retirement looks like, and presume that it will be for at least 30 years. Make a list and take a guess at what those activities cost – even if your retirement is years away. How much money will you need coming in each month or year?
• Resolve to get most of your investments out of tax-deferred plans. If you’re working for a company that provides a match for 401k contributions, by all means, contribute up to the maximum match. “That’s free money – you’d be crazy not to take advantage,” McNair says. But anything beyond that should be invested in something that’s more tax efficient: Roth IRA, municipal bonds, life insurance or real estate. No one expects taxes will go down – they’ll be going up. Uncle Sam already has a lien on your IRA or 401(k); don’t let his lien, the taxes you’ll owe, continue to grow. Go ahead and pay now, and your future retired self will be glad you did. • Resolve to have a portfolio that generates a steady or guaranteed paycheck. The ideal financial security for retirement is having a guaranteed income that increases with inflation, McNair says. “You want to plan for an income that meets or exceeds your annual income now so, if you’ll be getting $1,000 a month from Social Security at age 62 and your current income is $4,000 a month, you need to have a plan to guarantee $3,000 a month to cover that gap.” Annuities and life insurance are the only investments that provide a guaranteed income you cannot outlive, so consider them for at least part of your portfolio. “You don’t want them to make up 100 percent of your portfolio, but they should provide the foundation,” McNair says. It’s important to start thinking now about where you want to be in retirement and what combination of investments will ensure you have the lifestyle you want for as long as you live, he says. “At 65, you don’t want to be making risky investments because you’re panicking about not having enough money.”
Andrew McNair is founder and CEO of SWAN Capital, specializing in Wealth Management and Retirement Income. After earning a degree in business administration/finance, and with two books on his financial strategies already published, McNair launched SWAN later that year. At 22, he was hosting a radio show, What Your Money Would Say, that provides financial guidance to retirees. McNair is also the founder and CEO of the Veteran Benefit Project, which works with veterans and their families at no charge to ensure they receive all of the benefits they deserve.

TO BE OR NOT TO BE A GENUINE FRESH, RAW, UNPASTEURISED HONEY By Sebastien Martin
VISTA MAGAZINE ISSUE 92

here is one point that the Manuka honey industry agrees on: not all Manuka honeys are equal. While everybody has their own argument as to what is fair to advertise or market, it also seems that a lack of regulations plays a major role in the absence of information on the grocery label. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency established the Honey Program to protect consumers from fraudulent products sold on Canadian soil. Honey is considered “‘safe and wholesome, when properly packaged and labelled according to the regulatory requirements, and eligible to be traded inter-provincially, exported or bear the Canada grade mark.” But there seems to be a real disconnect between the term “wholesome” and what is really sold in the marketplace. As it stands today, companies importing honey, including Manuka honey, do not have to indicate on the label if the honey is pasteurized or not; nor do they have to conduct a pollen count analysis to determine if the honey is true to its label. This led Dr. Mercola, a New York Times bestselling author, to expose the subject in an article published in January of 2012. This story leads to question the honey sold onto Canadian soil with the following remark: “The food safety divisions of the World Health Organization, the European Commission and dozens of others have also ruled that without pollen, there is no way to determine whether the honey came from legitimate and safe sources.” In a nutshell, without a pollen count, there is no way to know if the honey is genuine, coming from a specific country or from a specific plant. In fact, it could be easily blended or mixed, so no one would know where this “base” comes from or if it has been manipulated in any way.
For the last decades, the Manuka honey industry has been plagued with confusing and elaborate marketing schemes that have simplified the complexity of Manuka honey and ignored crucial factors that contribute to the qualities and superiority of Manuka. Instead of relying on a synergetic reaction that makes up the DNA of Manuka, the attention of the consumer has been diverted towards one single component – methylgloxal. But research shows that a greater level of methylglyoxal associated with the uniqueness of Manuka honey actually can rapidly destroy some of the therapeutic components found in this honey, including its antioxidant properties. In addition, consumers also should be aware that the methylgloxal levels can be manually increased by the beekeepers with the addition of the chemical DHA either by adding it to the honey or feeding it to the bees. A recent document published by the Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI) in New Zealand discusses how the New Zealand government could potentially regulate Manuka honey. MPI indicates in its report that policing this manipulation would be extremely hard to do and the discussions seem to have halted after a clash between the Manuka honey lobbyists and MPI. To enjoy health benefits of honey, research shows that pure, fresh, raw, unpasteurized honey is key. As a consumer, if you do not see these terms on the label, one has to assume that the honey has been manipulated in some way. In addition, consumers should also pay attention to Non-GMO labelling. Whole Foods Market, the world’s largest retailer of natural and organic foods, mandates that products containing genetically modified organisms (GMOs) as ingredients will require special
labelling in all Whole Foods Market stores by 2018. While the majority of Manuka honeys claim to be Non-GMO, it only requires five per cent of GMO crops to contaminate an organic or Non-GMO crop, causing it to lose its capacity to advertise Non-GMO on a label. So, it is important to rely on what shows on the label and look for a genuine NonGMO logo associated with the brand. A list of participating companies for the Non-GMO Project can be seen on the following link for both the USA and Canada: http://www.nongmoproject.org/find-non-gmo/ search-participating-products/browse-products-by-brand The educated honey consumer should search for what truly makes up a quality honey, insuring they get a pure, fresh, raw, non-GMO honey, without chemical residues or manipulation. Originally from France and now a Canadian citizen, Sebastien Martin has over 17 years of business practice internationally and has become the “go-to” person in terms of honey regulations and specifically Manuka honey for the North American market. Working with Ecocert Canada and Bio Canada, Sebastien has been the leading force behind the change of some regulations regarding the import and presence of organic honey into Canada in the last few years. Thanks to him, many organic honeys have been imported into the Canadian market instead of being blocked because of some discrepancies in the newly drafted COR standards. Through his staple brands and businesses, Sebastien has been the first North American entrepreneur to push and get the North American approval for the Non-GMO Project verified logo for the Wedderspoon New Zealand honey line. He has not stopped working towards innovative products, such as the All-Natural and Award-winning Queen of the Hive Face Contour Cream & Mask, using bee venom and Manuka honey, being the first to manufacture this high-end cosmetic crème in North America. www.wedderspoon.ca

THE SCIENCE OF LIVING WELL:
NEUROPLASTICITY By Dr Cory Holly
D
uring the 20th century, most neuroscientists thought of the brain as a static structure, impossible to alter, modify or change after early childhood. But fortunately for all of us still alive today, recent research has shown this belief to be erroneous. The brain and its vast array of portable contents are as pliable as clay in the hands of a potter. Nature is the master potter, and nurture is the environment into which it is thrust. Both play complex and elusive roles in brain development, outcome and function. We now know that many functional aspects of the brain remain plastic even into adulthood. Changes in our external environment that alter our behavior and cognition can actually modify connections between existing neurons. This is great news for those of us formerly deceived by conventional education and outdated belief systems opposed to change. Through a process known as neurogenesis, new pathways and synapses in the hippocampus, olfactory bulb, cerebellum and other regions of the brain can be generated. Neuronal activation and cortical remapping evidence in response to experience and brain exercise is proof that the brain, like muscle itself in response to exercise, can and
does change throughout our entire life. Sarcopenia describes the apparently normal phenomenon of losing lean mass and functional tissue as we age. However, most of this loss – once assumed to be caused by aging itself – more accurately correlates in aging men and women with the willful act of physical inaction. If you don’t use voluntary muscle as designed and intended by nature, it will slowly fade away like a summer sun setting over the distant horizon. The good news is that if we do exercise correctly and train our bodies as advised by Socrates, Plato and Aristotle 2,300 years ago, we will never lose the functional potential of our health engine, namely skeletal muscle. The key is to contract it repeatedly under force through its natural full range of motion. Muscle shrinks and dies like any neglected plant, but thrives like a well-tended garden that is continuously manicured. Our genes permit continual function, adaptation and evolution throughout our lifespan, provided the environment is ideal. This of course includes the grey matter between our ears. Neuroplastic methods – including various computer programs and mind activation games – are currently utilized to treat traumatic brain

injury, learning difficulties, artificial limb replacement challenges and chronic pain. Research by neuroscientist Michael Merzenich demonstrates that certain brain exercises designed to stimulate neurogenesis are equal or superior to many outdated psychotropic drugs currently used to treat schizophrenia and mental illness. Psychotropic drugs for the most part and with rare exception are the bane of human existence. No biomarker, blood test or gene exists for accurately determining mental illness in any individual as defined by conventional psychiatry. Aberrant or strange behavior is all they go by. How primitive and how sad compared to what is known in functional preventive molecular medicine. Plasticity of the brain exists from cradle to the grave. Not only can we create thousands of new neural pathways that extend from each of our 100 billion brain neurons, but we can also create new neurons from scratch. Something out of nothing? Reminds me of theoretical physicist and cosmologist Lawrence Kraus and his latest publication, A Universe From Nothing. Different forms of physical exercise induce neuroplasticity in different regions of the brain. Cognitive function can be improved at any age. How we learn, think, perceive and remember are concepts no longer reserved only for children. So get at it, exercise your brain. Step barefooted across the stream of your mind but make sure your feet are planted on the methods of science and evidence-based medicine. Study online. Choose a topic or course that interests you. Challenge yourself. Learn how to sustain yourself and extend your life, both in terms of quantity and quality. Explore the world you inhabit.
Explore the prism that inhabits you. Study the history and life of the great thinkers. Just like the body and muscle itself, we must use the brain creatively or we will most certainly lose it! Our capacity to think, adapt and grow is truly remarkable. Most limits are set by us alone, but if you haven’t set any, you will most likely not experience any. When elephants are young they are tethered by a collar fastened around one of their hind legs. The collar is attached to a chain tied to a metal stake in the ground. When the baby elephant tries to break away, the collar cuts into the elephant’s skin causing severe pain. Eventually it learns not to tug on the chain. It becomes complacent and over time this learned behavior remains intact. A full-grown elephant seldom attempts to break free even though it could easily snap the chain with one simple tug. Why is that? Keep this analogy in mind regarding your own potential. The collar around your neck was put there by the society you were born into. As a child, you had no means of understanding reality, freedom or liberty. You were forced to eat a certain way, believe in things impossible to falsify, and even circumcised or vaccinated against your will. Are you someone’s property? Do you belong to the state? Will you remain complacent for the rest of your life, or will you break free of the chains that bind you and pursue a life dedicated to health and wellness? The choice is yours… The Cory Holly Institute is an online school of holistic sports nutrition, health and fitness. Our certification career courses teach students how to live well in the real world. COVER STORY
Consistency and Focus: An Interview with
TOMMY
EUROPE By Dan Tidsbury
Photographer: Aaron Aubrey – www.aaronaubrey.ca
“IT REALLY COMES DOWN TO THE MENTAL PART OF IT. IF YOU WANT SOMETHING BAD ENOUGH, YOU’LL DO WHAT IT TAKES TO GET THERE.”
www.vistamagonline.com
We started with the origin and growth of Tommy’s interest in health and fitness. “It began for me from an early age, primarily through sports – hockey, then football. As I started progressing and realized I wanted to play professional football, I realized I had to get bigger, stronger, faster. I started working out in the 11th grade and just loved it. It became part of my lifestyle, so it’s just something that I do, something that I don’t really have to work hard at. I just go to the gym, it’s an integral part of who I am.” Even for someone who has been actively involved in fitness for a long time, there are challenges that must be faced as an individual. For Tommy? “The challenge is always keeping it new and keeping it fresh. That’s what keeps people going, no matter what their goals are. They have to have fun along the way. The programming has to be interesting and it’s got to have some variety to it. It’s difficult, but that’s the part of it that I like: trying new things. “I’ll learn something or read up on something – I’ll try it out on myself first. Then I’ll try the programs out on other people, and eventually it becomes either a book or a DVD. I wrote the book The 10 Pound Shred: From Flab to Fit in 4 weeks.4 weeks to a New You is one of my video programs and I am just about to release a DVD, The TE 60 Shred. Yeah, it’s a lot of work, a lot of hours, but it is definitely worth it.” We have all observed that some people are more successful than others in achieving their fitness goals. Some of the factors that add to the chance of success? “Well, I have created my own training philosophy, the SHRED training philosophy (an acronym for strength, heart, resilience, efficient, and discipline) and I have found that everyone who is successful has every single one of those attributes. Really, when I talk to people, it’s that you have to be tough. You have to set your mind. It’s not going to be easy. You will have to work hard; you will have to push past your comfort zones. That’s why somebody could lose a hundred pounds and somebody else could have a tough
time losing 5. It really comes down to the mental part of it. If you want something bad enough, you’ll do what it takes to get there. People just have to put themselves out there and not be afraid of falling short and just give it everything they have. That’s the only way they will know for sure and reach their goals.” So when people are getting started, Tommy identifies two common problems that they often encounter. “I think the first thing is time. People don’t think they have enough time. I kind of combat that by saying, “You know, go for just 30 minutes a day.” If you have 30 minutes of exercise 5 days a week, that’s 130 hours in a year. You have to make time for it as if it is your most important meeting, which it is. Things will come up. Life happens. It is not always going to be a straight line. If you put yourself first, you will find the time. It will become part of your lifestyle. “Secondly, there is so much information out there. If somebody isn’t as motivated, sometimes it can lead to information overload. Keep it simple: start exercising! If you don’t have an exercise background, work with a trainer. Work with somebody who can monitor you so you are doing the right things, you are doing exercises that are appropriate for you, and you are having fun along the way. If you’re not going to have fun doing it, you are going to stop. So find some way to make it fun, whether that’s having a trainer, taking a class, or just doing things like taking a walk, hiking, or biking. There are so many different things that you can do, so find something that you like and you will be consistent in what you do and in making good choices along the way.” A big part of health and fitness is what goes into the body. What dietary and nutritional regimens does Tommy recommend? “Eating real food! There is no real secret to it. Portion size is key. The average female at the minimum level will need about 1,500 calories per day. If they are exercising, add another third per day. For the average guy, it is somewhere around 2,000. Now, it depends on what your ultimate goals are. Some people want to gain weight. They have to up their calorie count. “Try just having a little bit of everything on the plate. You need your fats; you need your carbs; you need your protein. Be cautious of any diet that restricts anything – diet – the first 3 letters are interesting: D I E. People say, “Don’t have any carbs.” You need your carbs, but have the right carbs, so lots of fruits and vegetables. You need your proteins - the leaner proteins are obviously better for you. And you need your fats, the Omega – 3’s and Omega 6’s. Eating every 2-3 hours is the key.”

but nothing crazy. There’s tons of different things that you can take out there, but keep it simple. One thing I avoid is getting people to take fat burners because they end up relying on them. At some point it will screw up your metabolism.” “Vitamin D is important. We are up in Canada and we have the cold, wet, no sun… so vitamin D is very important. Take B vitamins, like B12, for the energy and vitamin C. I think everyone should definitely take a multi-vitamin because it gives you a wide range and then you get your vitamins through your foods as well – leafy greens and your citrus type fruits as well, but everything in moderation.” With all of the hats that Tommy wears and the demands that each one places on his energy and time, maintaining balance and inner wellness and fighting stress could pose a real challenge. His approach? “Balance is tough sometimes. That work/life balance is difficult for everyone. During some periods, I am really good and make time for everything, but sometimes I get stuck into what I am doing, just kind of in my own little tunnel and that’s when I usually get the complaints from the family: “Are you working again?” So it is just trying to make time for the important things. “I have always got things that I am working towards, and I tell people that if you have something that you are working towards, you are going to stay consistent. My weight doesn’t fluctuate too much unless I’m training for something particular, like when I am doing stunts and I have to gain weight to double somebody or slim down. For me, I get in, on average, 3 to 4 days a week for workouts and my workouts are 35-45 minutes long with lots of cor. It’s just staying active. I like to say, “Just be ready.” “I work to keep things consistent. I’ll train 3 or 4 days per week, focusing on full body exercises and making time for myself. I put my training times in my schedule, just like any other important meeting. It takes me away from what I am doing because I am behind the computer a lot, so it’s always good to get up and to exercise. That’s how I find the balance and my body knows when I need a break and I know when I need to push it a little bit and challenge myself. I take classes because I’ll do things there that I wouldn’t do by myself. It’s important to remember that we all need help. “Stress fighting for me is exercise. It’s trying not to get too irritated. I’m a dad and I have two little girls, 2 and 3, and if you’re stressed, they realize it and jump on you even more, so I just try and keep things in moderation. Exercise for me is a great stress reliever. Sometimes, I’ll just take off and go train. I enjoy what I am doing and it refreshes me and clears my mind for all of the other things I need to do.”
On vitamins and supplements… “I am a supplement user, but they are to supplement your diet. They are not your whole diet, and some people just live on supplements. You still have to have a full range of foods. You’ll just enjoy food a lot more. “One supplement I use all the time is SierraSil, from playing professional football and going through injury – I’m a stunt performer as well. It’s awesome for the joints and will detoxify you as well. Get in the mode of drinking a lot of water. It’s important because it flushes the system and makes everything run a lot smoother. In addition to that I use a multivitamin, Vitamin D obviously, and protein powders,
We are just entering a new year, a time for setting goals and changing patterns. Tommy’s suggestions for getting and staying on track… “Set your goals! Set your quarterly goals and have something to work towards. If you do that, stay consistent and focused. Nobody can go 100%, so I like to follow an 80/20 rule where you’re making the right decisions 80% of the time and use the 20% for the activities that might not be the best for you – it could be drinking, it could be eating, or some other habit or activity that you enjoy. Go after your goals and always push the barrier. If you are not getting stronger, you are getting weaker!”

His advice to others to help manage their stress … “Give it 5 minutes. If you are feeling super-stressed, just walk away for 5 minutes. Yoga, meditation, deep breathing – deep inhale through the nose, deep exhale through the mouth. That tends to get it all out. It brings everything down and helps you… and get some exercise. It could be walking, or doing some stairs. Whatever it is, it gives you a spark and renews perspective.

very woman wants perfect skin that glows and appears totally flawless even when they aren’t wearing makeup. Because of this, the average woman will buy hundreds of dollars worth of skincare products to try to improve her natural complexion, while simultaneously slathering her face with tons of pore-clogging and chemicalridden makeup every morning. What most women don’t realize is that this only creates a vicious cycle: you use toxic synthetic makeup in the morning, and then all your skincare products do at night is undo the effects of these harsh chemicals, never really having time to truly treat your skin. This is why you should switch to natural cosmetics. Unlike traditional makeup, organic cosmetics use only natural ingredients, which means that your skin won’t constantly be fighting the effects of the harsh chemicals found in most cosmetics on the market. Instead, using natural cosmetics ensures that your skin won’t be affected by additional irritants from your cosmetics, allowing your nighttime skincare
products to really treat your skin concerns, without having to deal with the irritation and toxicity brought forth by the makeup you applied that morning. Some women may be concerned that organic cosmetics won’t give them the same beautiful finish as traditional cosmetics. Fortunately, this couldn’t be farther from the truth. Not only do natural cosmetics give the same results as those products full of harsh chemicals, but many women find that they look even better by using these natural products as they create the appearance of naturally beautiful skin instead of skin that is covered in a mask of makeup. Plus, organic makeup enthusiasts aren’t limited in their options when they switch to all-natural products. Organic cosmetics offer the same brilliant range of colors and products, making the option of going completely organic a perfect choice for even the most die-hard makeup enthusiasts. When it comes to makeup, the choice is clear: go all-natural, and your skin will thank you!

anada is blessed with some of the last vestiges of pristine nature on Earth — unbroken forests, coastlines and prairies, thousands of rivers, streams and lakes, open skies, abundant fresh air. Many of us live in urban areas, but our spectacular landscapes are embedded in our history and culture. They define and shape us as people We are also defined by our Constitution, which is far more than a set of legal prescriptions. It embodies our highest aspirations and values. As our nation’s top law, one would expect it to reflect our connection to the land, air, water and wildlife that keep us alive and healthy. Our Constitution’s Charter of Rights and Freedoms gives us freedom of expression, equal protection from discrimination and the right to life, liberty and security of the person. But it doesn’t mention the environment. How can we fully enjoy our freedoms without the right to live in a healthy environment? Some Canadians are further ahead than others. Quebec’s Environmental Quality Act and Charter of Human Rights and Freedoms both include environmental rights. Other provinces and territories — including Ontario, the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut — provide limited environmental rights. Worldwide, 110 countries enjoy constitutional rights to a healthy environment, and 181 of 193 UN
member countries support recognition of such a right. Canada and the U.S. are among the exceptions. The sad truth is that Canada fares poorly among wealthy nations on environmental performance. A recent ranking by the Washingtonbased Center for Global Development puts Canada last of 27 industrialized nations. The Conference Board of Canada rated our country 15th out of 17 industrialized nations for standards on air pollution, climate change, water and other environmental factors. And the World Health Organization reports that 36,800 premature deaths a year and 13 per cent of illnesses and injuries in Canada are related to exposure to environmental hazards — costing us tens of billions a year in health-care expenses and lost productivity. The benefits of constitutional protection of the environment are many and the drawbacks few. In places with such a right, people have legal avenues to protect them from activities that pollute the environment and put human health at risk. For example, Argentina’s constitutional environmental-rights protection was used in a case where industrial pollution was seriously affecting the health of people along the Matanza-Riachuelo River. After residents sued the national, provincial and municipal governments and 44 corporations, Argentina’s government established clean-up, resto-

Evidence suggests that stronger environmental regulation spurs innovation and competitiveness, so the right to a healthy environment can benefit the economy. In the aftermath of the Walkerton disaster, Ontario strengthened its drinking water legislation, which stimulated development and growth of the water-treatment technology sector. Countries with constitutional environmental protection, such as Norway, often enjoy high economic and environmental standards. It won’t be easy to get the right to a healthy environment enshrined in Canada’s Constitution. But with public support and small steps along the way — such as encouraging legal protection from municipal, regional and provincial governments — we can make it happen.

ration and regional environmental health plans. It has increased the number of environmental inspectors in the region from three to 250 and created 139 water, air and soil quality monitoring points. There’s still much to be done, but three new water-treatment plants and 11 new sewage-treatment plants mean millions of people now have access to clean water and sanitation. Many garbage dumps and polluting industries were shut down. And the local economy benefited. A legal right to a healthy environment is not about hamstringing corporations; it’s about ensuring they’re run responsibly and that people’s health and well-being come first. It’s also about ensuring laws are enforced and penalties imposed when they’re violated. The total amount of fines imposed under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act from 1988 through 2010 (about $2.4 million) amounted to less than what the Toronto Public Library collected in overdue-book fines in one year, 2009 (about $2.7 million)! And it’s not a right-versus-left political issue. Jacques Chirac, France’s conservative president from 1995 to 2007, made constitutional recognition of the right to a healthy environment one of his priorities. More than 70,000 French citizens attended public hearings on the issue and France’s Charter for the Environment was later enacted with broad support from all political parties.

• A bowl of baking soda in your fridge will help remove excess moisture and absorb odors. • Sprinkle some in your veggies crisper and cover with a cloth or paper towel for crisper veggies that last longer. • Sprinkle baking soda onto a damp sponge for cleaning out your refrigerator and counter tops without scratching. • Dissolve a couple of tablespoons of baking soda in water in a microwave safe bowl; then bring to the boil in your microwave. Allow to sit for a minute or two. Then, you should easily be able to wipe out any baked-on stains, plus your microwave will smell fresher too. • Sprinkling baking soda in the bottom of rubbish bags will help to control odors as you add trash. • To give your dishwasher a good cleaning, run it through a cycle and use baking soda instead of detergent. • Baking soda can be thrown on stove fires to extinguish the flames. The carbon dioxide generated when the powder burns starves the fire of oxygen. • Wash chemicals and pesticides off fruits and vegetables in a pot filled with water and 3 – 4 tablespoons of baking soda added. On a somewhat related note, here’s something interesting I came across. Baking soda is sometimes used when boiling vegetables to preserve their color. That practice is not recommended as it destroys the vitamin C content of vegetables.
GENERAL HOME
• Anywhere that moisture is a problem, such as cupboards under sinks, place a bowl of baking soda to help control humidity. You’ll need to occasionally stir the powder for maximum effective life.
• Crayon or texta marks on walls? Try applying baking soda/water paste on an old toothbrush and lightly brush the affected area. • Water stains on wooden floors can be removed with a sponge dampened in a solution of baking soda dissolved in water. • Sprinkle some baking soda into your vacuum bag to help reduce musty/pet smells being spread throughout your house when vacuuming. • Sprinkle baking soda on rugs and carpets before vacuuming as a deodorizing treatment. Most carpet powders you buy are baking soda based! Just a brief note on this – not recommended for areas that are very humid as the baking soda may stay in the carpet. • Mops can really stink out areas where they are stored. If your mop is getting on the nose, don’t throw it out, try soaking it in a mixture of 4 tablespoons baking soda and a gallon of water for a while. • Stains on porcelain sinks, toilets and plastics can be removed: apply a layer of baking soda and then use a damp sponge. I found this to work particularly well on a water stain in a sink that couldn’t be shifted otherwise without the use of heavy-duty chemicals and scratching the surface.
PLUMBING
As an alternative to caustic soda for clearing blocked drains, throw a cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by a couple of jugs of boiling water.
GARDEN
• Baking soda can deter ants – pour a solid line in areas of activity and they won’t cross it.

LAUNDRY
• Work a baking soda and water paste onto stains prior to washing to help remove them from the fabric. • Half a cup of baking soda added to a full load of washing will help brighten your wash and remove odors.
WORKSHOP/AUTO
• Mix a paste of baking soda and vinegar and apply with a pot scourer to remove light rusting • A baking-soda/water paste applied to chrome surfaces, allowed to dry and then buffed off will leave chrome shining! • Baking soda applied to fresh grease and oil spills on your garage floor will draw away the oil, which can then be scraped off.
PETS
• Baking soda lightly sprinkled and mixed into cat litter will help control odor. • Eliminate odor after you’ve cleaned up pet accidents by sprinkling over the dampened area with baking soda. Allow to dry and then vacuum.
provide relief. • A half teaspoon of baking soda mixed into a glass of water can act as mouthwash. • Sprinkle baking soda onto regular toothpaste to create whitening toothpaste
MISCELLANEOUS
• To clean jewelry, use a paste of 3 parts baking soda to 1 part water, apply the mixture to the piece, allow to sit for a couple of minutes, rinse off and then polish with a soft cloth. • Sprinkle your Christmas tree with baking soda to mimic snow – a much more environmentally friendly alternative to some of those chemical snow sprays! • With so many uses you’ll likely use a lot and buying baking soda in small boxes probably won’t be too economical. Have a chat to your local baker who may be able to supply you with larger quantities or try contacting a bakery supplies company as some sell direct to the public. • You can also save money on baking soda by re-using it. For example, once it has served its purpose as a fridge deodorizer, you can put it down your sink to help keep your drains clear. Phew, that’s quite a list of baking soda tips – it’s such a versatile substance and certainly a greener way to get many jobs around the house done.

• Whoofy shoes getting you down? Get a couple of old socks, fill up the toe sections with baking soda, place into the offending shoes and leave overnight to help remove odors. • A thick paste of baking soda and water applied to bug bites can

HEALTHY HERBS By Kathy Maraz RHN

rowing herbs in your garden, or inside, is so easy to do. Herbs are an essential tool to add taste and spice to food. Not only are they good for the kitchen, but herbs can also be for everyday use, such as natural first aid, to help with sore muscles, headaches, and can be also used for the skin. In fact herbal remedies have been used throughout the world for thousands of years. When used properly, they are safe and effective. Learning which herbs work helps us to learn more about the plants in our area, and what we can use for our own healing processes. Herbs are not suitable for everyone; if in doubt always consult a health care professional. Garlic has been used as a medicinal herb for over 5,000 years. It is known to lower cholesterol levels and treat colds and respiratory infections. It also adds flavour to foods. The bulb is the main part used. It can be crushed into stews, pastas and soups to add taste. It is also known for its vitamins, A, B, C and E, and the mineral selenium, and flavonoids. You can juice garlic, and take 1 teaspoon with honey to help with infections and arteriosclerosis. For prevention of colds and flu, eat 1-2 cloves per day. Grow in in deep fertile, well-drained soil in full sun. Plant the bulbs in autumn or winter; harvest the bulbs in late summer. Aloe Vera is native to tropical Africa. The sap has been used to treat burns, inflammation and skin ulcers. The main parts used are the leaves and gel; the sap is cooling and healing. The gel can be applied to burns, sunburns, dry skin, wounds, diaper rash, insect bite, rashes, eczema or any dry skin conditions. It is also sold in a tincture, where it is made from the whole pulped leaf. Take 1 teaspoon daily for relief of constipation, poor appetite or to stimulate bile flow in sluggish digestion. It can be easily grown in sandy soil with full sun, can be grown as a house plant, or grown outside during warmer months. Fennel has been used for centuries as an herb for an herbal drink after dinner for good digestion, and also used as a culinary herb. The whole plant is used including the seeds, roots, leaves and as an essential oil. It has anti- inflammatory properties, acts as a diuretic, improves circulation, and encourages milk flow. It can be made into a

tea by adding 1 teaspoon of seeds to boiling water as a helpful aid for digestion, gas and indigestion after meals. Use the above to gargle as a mouthwash for gum disorders, and sore throats. Fennel is very easy to grow. You can gather the leaves in the summer for culinary use, and seeds in autumn for use in teas and medicinal applications. Lemon balm is native to Europe, and has been used as a sleeping aid, and to relieve anxiety, depression, tension and digestive disorders. It is known as the “bee balm because it is regarded as being as healing as honey. You can drink lemon balm tea daily for depression, nausea, indigestion and exhaustion. It can be made into an ointment for use on insect bites and cold sores. Lemon balm can tolerate most soils and full sun or shade. Gather aerial parts in the summer and the leaves throughout the year for use in teas. Peppermint has more than 25 different varieties. Originally from Europe, it is now used worldwide mainly for flavourings and for perfumes. Peppermint is an excellent digestive aid, and helps with heartburn, morning sickness. It is also used to help with colds, inflammation, can be applied to skin for headaches and muscle pain and relieves toothaches. Peppermint oil seems to reduce spasms in the digestive tract, thereby helping many digestive conditions. It can be used as a tea by mixing 2-3 fresh leaves in a cup of boiling water and steeping for 5 minutes. Add a few drops of essential oil or fresh sprigs to a bowl of boiling water and use as an inhalant to help with nasal congestion. To use as a lotion, add a few drops of essential oil to body oil and rub onto the skin for aching joints and muscles. Very easy to grow, peppermint likes moist soil in partial shade. Use fresh leaves or they can be dried.

Sardines are rich in the polyunsaturated omega-3 fatty acids eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). EPA and DHA are exclusively unique to animal fats including seafood and wild game, although a small amount of DHA has been identified in algae. These long chain fatty acids function to sustain a healthy brain and nervous system and play a critical role in managing inflammation associated with resistance training. Canned sardines, when eaten with the bones, are a concentrated source of calcium. Canned sardines are also a good source of selenium, a trace element that is part of an antioxidant enzyme. Selenium deficiency will exacerbate iodine deficiency and may cause infertility in males. Few foods provide vitamin D and canned sardines are one of them. Sardines are also an important source of niacin and B-12. Popeye would have loved this combination! In a large skillet add: 1 tbsp coconut oil or ghee or olive oil ½ onion sautéed 6 cups spinach – stir in spinach until wilted ½ cup goat feta cheese Place this mixture on a plate In a large skillet add: 4 whole eggs 1 tin sardines in water – drain and cut up in small pieces Add a pinch of chilies, a dash of hot sauce or grainy mustard on the side. Lightly stir eggs and sardines in pan until eggs are cooked but still wet. Place on top of spinach and enjoy!

ardines are a type of small oily fish. They are often sold canned and are rich sources of omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D, calcium and protein. Sardines are also used for bait and to prepare feed for fish farms. Canned sardines have their heads removed and are cooked by steaming or deep-frying. They are then dried and packed in vegetable oil, brine or sauce. A typical water-packed can of sardines contains around 140 calories, 20 g of protein and 7 g of fat. Sardines packed in oil contain more fat and calories.

mokers are often hammered with stories of the negative effects of smoking, usually by people who do not have any real understanding of what it is like to be addicted to nicotine. This bad news approach is generally rather ineffective as a motivator to get someone to quit smoking. In this article, I wish to take a more positive approach and look at the many benefits of quitting. It is believed that smoking establishes a neurological reward pathway in the brain. Initially, this pathway is fairly weak, but the longer you continue to smoke the stronger it gets. Every time you smoke, more and more positive associations are added to this reward cycle, gradually making it stronger and stronger. When you think about smoking you may be visualizing any one of a number of situations where you have enjoyed smoking. You may be thinking of a pack of cigarettes or a particular social occasion in which you are smoking, or, perhaps, smoking and drinking coffee. Each of these images gets added to your reward pathway. When you smoke, it is the direct pleasure that you get from smoking that helps to build this reward pathway. Even the withdrawal symptoms add a form of reinforcement to the pathway due to the relief you get when you light another cigarette. The pathway starts out as a narrow little track and ends up as what Anthony Robbins (well-known self-help author and motivational speaker) describes as a “neural super-highway.” Little wonder you cannot get off this “highway”, because all along the way there are hundreds of signs reminding you about smoking and the pleasure and relief it brings. You ignore the negative aspects that lurk on the side like vicious beasts waiting to devour you. They can wait, because as long as your attention remains on the road, they will get you in the end. When you quit smoking, this pathway falls into disuse, weakens, and over a fairly long time, gets pushed to the back of your mind. What you need to do is find ways of weakening this pathway more quickly. Reading the bad news about all the negative effects smoking is having on your health is one way in which you can do this. A second thing you can do is to start to build a new pathway that will cause you to want to refrain from smoking. Many quit smoking programmes suggest you tackle some exciting new project that either precludes or discourages smoking. Taking up sport, walking or some other fitness-orientated activity is an excellent way to do this. Learning to play a musical instrument or taking up pottery or some other form of art are other things you can consider. At the same time, instead of focusing on all the harmful effects of smoking,
start to focus on the benefits of quitting. Quitting will enable you to develop a new empowering lifestyle and accept new challenges. Within as little as 20 minutes after you put out your last cigarette, the health benefits start to accumulate. The health benefits of quitting relate to every aspect of your health. Your chances of contracting any illness are reduced, and your chances of a speedy recovery from any illness or disease are improved. These benefits can continue to accumulate for as much as 10 to 15 years. The following benefits, which are only some of those you stand to gain, are commonly quoted in much of the literature. • Within 20 minutes of quitting, your heart rate and pulse rate both start to drop and your blood pressure starts to decrease. • Within 8-12 hours, the carbon monoxide level in your blood drops to normal levels and the amount of oxygen in your blood increases. This has a positive influence on every organ and system in your body. • Within 2 days, your chance of having a heart attack has started to decrease. Your sense of smell and taste starts to improve. • Within weeks, the decline in your lung function due to smoking has been halted. You have a reduced risk of asthma and respiratory infections. • Soon after you have quit, the chances of smoking-related problems with pregnancy and the health of your unborn baby start to diminish. • By the time you have reached 3 months, your chance of heart attack continues to drop still further. By this time your lung function and circulation have also started to improve. • After approximately one month, your coughing and shortness of breath start to decrease. The tiny hair-like structures that move mucus out of the lungs start to function again. This increases your ability to get rid of mucus and clean your lungs. This in turn reduces your chances of contracting lung infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia. Your whole respiratory system will improve markedly over the next nine months or so. • It is estimated that approximately one year after quitting, your risk of coronary heart disease will be half what it was when you were still a smoker. • Ten years after quitting, your risk of lung cancer is about half of that of a smoker and your risk of other smoking-related can-
cers will also be significantly reduced. • Over the period from 5 to 15 years after you have quit, your risk of having a stroke can drop to the same level as a nonsmoker. Similarly, after 15 years your risk of coronary heart disease has dropped to the level of someone who has never smoked. • You will live a longer and healthier life than you would if you smoked. • Your energy levels will improve. • Increased energy levels mean an increased quality of life. • It is not just your physical health that will improve. You are able to do more things and feel good about them. You have a greater desire to achieve your goals. You have a more positive outlook on life. Your pride in who you are improves. Your family life will improve in many ways as you no longer feel guilty about all the things your smoking is robbing your family of. • You are able to engage in more open and warm relationships. Wow! That is a long list of truly great benefits. I want you to think long and hard about all these benefits. Make your own personal list as it applies to you. PERSONALIZED HEALTH CARE AND FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE Dr Dianna Giles ND

t’s not your age, you think to yourself. You should be in your prime! So what’s going on? You might be tired all the time or have low back pain. Your digestion is out of sorts with bloating and you get more headaches than you used to. Whatever it is, you’re certainly feeling off, way off. You often feel irritable, sad, lonely, anxious or, even worse, all of the above! The crazy thing is: you’ve been to your general practitioner and the blood work checks out. The functional medicine approach could give you the answers you need. Naturopathic Doctors treat the cause and many use the Functional Medicine approach. The term functional medicine means a system of medicine in which the patient is the center. This approach to health care is different from simply treating symptoms for a number of reasons. A variety of tools unravel the web of causes that underlie both disease and pre-disease states, while taking into account the factors that make you YOU. A comprehensive methodology that includes conventional and alternative testing is used to gauge patients’ mental, emotional, and physical health. The key isn’t only in the type of testing; equally important is the interpretation. In natural medicine, patterns of anomalies are looked for to determine the source of imbalance for the best place to start treatment. What is learned from testing is combined with what is known about a patient’s genetic, environmental and social history to create a natural based personalized treatment plan. Functional medicine doesn’t only look at a test for its numerical value. It looks at the numerical value in relation to other test results to pick up the subtleties of disease states before they become full blown illness. An example is the presentation of the subclinical thyroid picture. Many people go to their Medical Doctor with numerous symptoms of low thyroid function including fatigue, hair loss, weight
gain, depression, restless sleep, dry skin and brittle nails. They often get tested only for one of the values important in interpreting how a thyroid gland is functioning and when the result comes back, there is only one interpretation to be had. Either your value is high or it is low. The in-between is not usually addressed. In Canada, a diagnosis of hypothyroidism is only made after several TSH (thyroid stimulation hormone) tests read above 5.0. Practically speaking, in order to diagnose a subclinical hypothyroidism, where the gland is low functioning but the TSH appears normal, several other tests should be considered. Countless times over the last 12 years as a Naturopathic Doctor, I have seen patients with the subclinical thyroid picture. This is where many of the symptoms of thyroid dysfunction exist but the TSH levels on a conventional test are still at normal. Catching the imbalances while they are still in a pre-disease state depends on interpreting more subtle testing, and looking at the patient as a whole, and not as a carrier of isolated symptoms. The mind and body are an integrated system where each functions to affect the other. Functional medicine takes that into account and brings you effective preventative medicine, not only symptom management. Consider a naturopathic assessment as not only a natural approach to medicine, but also as an integral part of your healthcare.
